What is a Long-Term Social Visit Pass?

A LTSVP is a long-term pass that allows certain family members of a Employment Pass holder (known as a principal) to accompany them and reside in Malaysia for six months to five years .

How long will your LTSVP be valid for?

The validity period of a LTSVP corresponds to the validity period of the principal Employment Pass holder.

However, if the pasport validity of the LTSVP applicant is less than that of the principal Employment Pass, then the validity of their LTSVP will follow their passport instead. While the LTVSP can always be renewed, it would be a good idea to ensure the applicant’s passport is up to date.

Long Term Social Visit Pass vs Dependent Pass

As of September 2023, an application for a LTSVP and Dependent Pass both cost RM450 , not including other immigration and processing fees.

The purpose of this bulletin is to provide information regarding the recent announcement by the Prime Minister of Malaysia about the issuance of long-term Social Visit Pass (Graduate Pass) to international students from 23 countries.
The pass allows international students to stay in Malaysia for a year after graduation. This enables them to further their studies, travel, and work part-time in job sectors permitted by the country’s laws.
Effective 1st December 2023, applicants will be able to submit applications for the pass directly to Immigration Cyberjaya.

2. ELIGIBILITY

2.1. International Students

The application can be made at Student Pass Unit, Immigration Cyberjaya.
The pass will only be issued to students graduating from bachelor’s degree courses or higher levels.
Applicant’s student pass is still valid during the application process.
Applicant must have a passport validity of 18 months and above.
Applicant must provide a completion letter from their institute as prove that they have or will be completing studies.
Applicant must have an active health insurance policy that is covering the 12 months period.
Applicant needs to provide a personal bond with a Malaysian citizen as the sponsor. The sponsor needs to have a monthly salary of at least RM1,500.
Applicant from the following nationalities will be eligible to apply:

The Social Visit Pass (Dependent Graduate Pass) is applicable only to applicants with a valid Dependent Pass issued under the principal Student Pass.
The applicant must have a passport with a validity of at least 18 months.

Long Term Social Visit Pass – Jabatan Imigresen Malaysia

Foreign husbands/wives to Malaysians can be given Visit Pass (social) for a period of 5 years on condition they comply with all the requirements.
They are also allowed to be engaged in any form of paid employment or in any business or professional occupation without converting their social Visit Pass status to Employment Pass or Visit Pass (Temporary employment).

Terms and condition Employment of Citizen’s Spouse

The marriage is legally under the respective Malaysia Laws.
The applicant is eligible to be given a long term Social Visit Pass or has already been issued such a pass as a foreign husband and wife to Malaysia.
The respective employment or business or professional occupation does not contravene any law or regulation in Malaysia.
The permission to engage in paid employment or business or professional occupation must be endorsed on the applicant’s passport by the Director General Of Immigration, Malaysia or any authorized Immigration officer.
The applicant has fulfilled all requirements as specified by the Director General of Immigration, Malaysia for the Social Visit Pass to him/her as a husband or wife of a Malaysian and for the purpose of endorsing permission for him/her to be engaged in paid employment or business or professional occupation.

Application can be made at Visa, Pass and Permit Division, Immigration Department of Malaysia (Headquarters) or at any State Immigration Office.
Application can be submitted together with the application for a Social Visit Pass or after the Social Visit Pass has been issued.

Working permit for Spouse of Malaysian Citizen

Foreign husband/wife is permitted to work in Malaysia without having to change their Social Visit Pass to Employment Pass with condition of acquiring working approval from the Immigration Department.
The approval is in the form of endorsement and be given on the passport/travel document.
The endorsement is given without fee (free).
The endorsement entitled the holder to work in any legal profession.
The application for the endorsement can be made at the Visa, Pass and Permit Division Immigration Head Quarters or at the nearest states Immigration offices.
The permit can be applied at any time after or during the submission of the Social visit pass.
Application letter together with a copy of letter of appointment/company registration evidence, marriage certificate and valid long term social visit pass are required for the approval consideration.

A Malaysian Long Term Social Visit Pass allows foreign nationals to travel to Malaysia and stay in the country for six months to five years.

Malaysia Long-Term Social Visit Passes are mostly issued to spouses or family members of Malaysians or foreigners who are residents of Malaysia, which is why it’s also called a Malaysia spouse visa. However, families of Employment Pass holders and spouses of Malaysian citizens and foreign nationals in need of medical attention are eligible to receive this pass.

Eligibility for a Malaysia Long Term Social Visit Pass

As you can probably guess from the name of the pass, the Malaysia country Long Term Social Visit Pass or spouse visa is accessible to eligible people, such as

Malaysia Long Term Social Visit Pass for spouses and children

The spouse of a Malaysian citizen. The spouse must be a foreign national.
Common-law spouse
Children over 21. They must be single.
Parents or parents-in-law
Foreign nationals who travel to Malaysia to undergo medical treatment in Malaysia. They are allowed to bring 1 companion.

What are the Required Documents for a Malaysia Long Term Social Visit Pass?

Several documents are required for applying for a Malaysian Long Term Social Visit Pass. Each type of eligible applicant (mentioned above) must collect certain documents. Applicants must collect the following documents and submit them to the Immigration Department of Malaysia:

The visa applications form IMM.12, IMM.55, and IMM.38. Two copies of either of them are required.
Copies of all pages of the applicant’s passport. These copies must include personal information pages, previous visa pages, and the cover.

The following documents are required for the spouse of a Malaysian citizen:

A copy of their marriage certificate
The form of the Malaysian Sponsor Statement
Security Bond. This bond must be stamped with an RM10.00 income stamp.
Pictures. Each spouse must have two passport-size photos.
Statutory Declaration. This document proves the status of marriage and shows that it is still in effect.
If they have children, copies of their children’s birth certificates.
Photocopies of their birth certificates
Copies of their ID cards
Wedding pictures
Accommodation address of Malaysian citizen
If the Malaysian citizen is employed: A letter of support from the Malaysian citizen’s employer.

The following documents are required for the family members of Employment Pass holders:

A letter of support
A letter of authorization
Pictures of the applicant/s (These pictures must be passport-sized that are taken recently)
Their marriage certificate
If they have children, birth certificates of children, or adoption papers (in case of adoption)
Custody papers of their children
Photocopies of all the pages of the applicants’ passports
Approval letter of the Employment Pass holder
Personal Bond. This bond must be stamped with an RM10.00 income stamp.
A Statutory Declaration from the Malaysian citizen or permanent resident
The ID of the sponsor

The following document is required for medical treatment:

Written confirmation from the appropriate government department or specialist hospital.

Note: The documents listed above are not the complete required documents. Applicants and their sponsors must visit the Malaysia Immigration Department and ask about a full list of documents. Read our article to learn about the complete Malaysian visa requirements .

All copies have to be presented with the original at the time of submitting the documents. In addition, a specific Embassy or Consulate of the country has to certify the birth/marriage certificate as a true copy.

All the documents have to be translated into English. The relevant Embassy or Consulate or Institut Terjemahan Buku Malaysiamust translate them.

How Can I Apply for the Malaysia Long Term Social Visit Pass?

The Immigration Department of Malaysia has the obligation of issuing the Long Term Social Visit Pass or spouse visa.

Before the foreign national arrives in Malaysia, the Malaysian citizen or Malaysian Employment Pass holder must submit the application along with the required documents to the Immigration Department. In addition, the spouse of the Employment Pass holder or Malaysian citizen must obtain a Malaysia Visa with Reference.

Applicants who are the spouses of Malaysian citizens are required to be present with the Malaysian spouse when applying for a Long Term Social Visit Pass at the Immigration Department.

Malaysia Visa With Reference for a Long Term Social Visit Pass

Foreign nationals must obtain a Visa With Reference (VDR) from the nearest Malaysian embassy or consulate before traveling to Malaysia. Before applying for a Malaysian Visa With Reference, foreign nationals need a Visa Approval Letter from the Immigration Department.

A Malaysia Visa with Reference (VDR) is appropriate for all travel purposes except tourism. There is a list of required documents for a Malaysia Visa With Reference below:

Visa applications forms, such as forms IMM.12, IMM.55, and IMM.38.
Questionnaire form of Visa With Reference
Photographs of both spouses or applicants (There must be two pictures that are taken recently)
Passport or applicant copies of both spouses
Malaysian sponsor/spouse’s ID card
A photocopy of the marriage certificate
Statutory Declaration. This declaration is regarding the status of marriage to show whether it is active.
Children’s birth certificate
Evidence of the sponsor’s financial income

How Long is the Malaysia Spouse Visa Valid?

The Long Term Social Visit Pass or spouse visa is valid from a minimum of six months to a maximum of five years. This type of Malaysia pass can be renewed before it expires.

Malaysia Spouse Visa Fee

The Long Term Social Visit Pass can be used to enter Malaysia by foreign nationals of Malaysian citizens or expatriates.

Can I Work with a Malaysia Long Term Social Visit Pass?

When family members of Employment Pass holders come to Malaysia, they cannot start working with a Long Term Social Visit Pass. In order to get permission to work, they need to find an employer and apply for their own Employment Pass.

On the other hand, spouses of Malaysian citizens do not need to change their Long Term Social Visit Pass into an Employment Pass. Instead, they can start work in Malaysia by getting an endorsement to work in their passport from the Immigration Department of Malaysia. This endorsement is free.

Applying for the work endorsement for the spouse of a Malaysian citizen needs:

An application letter
A letter of appointment or company registration evidence
Their valid Long Term Social Visit Pass to the Visa
Pass and Permit Division of the Immigration Headquarters or the nearest state Immigration office.

If a work endorsement is acquired for a Malaysia Long Term Social Visit Pass holder, they can work in any profession without any problems.

The Bottom Line…

A Malaysian Long Term Social Visit Pass or spouse visa is designed for Employment pass holders and Malaysian citizens to bring their spouse to Malaysia. Besides spouses, Employment pass holders can bring their children (single, 21 years old or higher), parents, or parents-in-law. The process of obtaining a Long Term Social Visit Pass has two parts. Employment pass holders and Malaysian citizens must collect the required documents and submit the application; in addition, the foreign national must apply for a Visa with Reference. Both parts must be done before the foreign national arrives in Malaysia. If Visit Pass is approved, the foreign national will receive a Pass for 6 months to 5 years.

You are right, of course. In Malaysia, you will usually need to show a sponsorship letter from a Malaysian company in order to get your foreign spouse a Long Term Social Visit Pass (LTSVP). This letter of sponsorship is often needed to show that you can afford to support your spouse and have a good reason for them to stay in Malaysia.

Malaysia: Updates to the Social Visit Pass

November 2, 2022, Update: The government of Malaysia introduced additional information regarding the Social Visit Pass scheme. The government clarified that:

Once issued, the approval letter for the Social Visit Pass will remain valid for a 30-day period and can only be used for a single-entry visit to Malaysia.
Applicants can apply for a second Social Visit Pass after the first approval letter expires, as long as the holder has exited the country before submitting a new application.

The government of Malaysia expanded eligibility for applicants under the Social Visit Pass scheme

The government of Malaysia introduced new permissions for those applying under the Professional Visit Pass (PVP) Social Visit Pass scheme on October 3, 2022. Foreign nationals intending to perform short-term assignments in Malaysia for a period of 30 days or less in the following sectors will be permitted to apply:

Education, technology and communication, commodity, security and defense, finance and banking, agriculture and farming, tourism, factory and manufacturing, services, wholesale and retail sales, and petroleum and energy

Applications must be submitted while the applicant is located outside of Malaysia. Generally, the Social Visit Pass processing time will take approximately three working days. However, timelines can vary based on several factors, including the purpose of the application, the applicant’s nationality, and the country of application submission.

Submit Application

Bring all photocopy and original documents along for verification during application submission at the Immigration Department Office. For most states you can just walk in ( Comment Sep 2022 )

Application of Wife or Husband to Citizen LTSVP (Spouse Visa)

Permohonan pas lawatan sosial (pls) – isteri atau suami kepada warganegara, documents required.

Enclose relevant supporting documents (Original and photocopy), namely:

Form Imm.12 (Visit Pass Application Form) – Passport Photo of applicant is required (blue background)

Borang Permohonan Pas Lawatan. You can fill this form by handwriting in capital letters

Form Imm.38 (Permohonan Untuk Visa – Visa Application) – 2 copies

Proof of Marriage

Marriage certificate (Overseas Marriage certificate must be endorsed by the Embassy of that country)
Extract of Marriage Register – Payment: RM50. Application is made using Form JPNKC09 at JPN office ( Carian/ Cabutan Daftar Perkahwinan ). You can get it from the JPN branch where your marriage registration took place. If the marriage was registered abroad, you have to get it from JPN Putrajaya.

*Some Immigration offices don’t require this, so check with them if a certified marriage certificate is sufficient.

Extract of Marriage Register

Copy of child’s birth certificate (if any) – confirmation letter from the court if stepchild
Latest Affidavit – the marriage exists and is still valid (Surat Akuan Sumpah Terkini – perkahwinan wujud dan masih sah) – two passport photos (blue background) . The declaration and form need to be certified and stamped by the Commissioner of Oaths.

To confess that your marriage still exists and both of you still remain as husband and wife and have never been apart for five (5) years in a row – How to fill the form: Surat Akuan

Proof of Income

Malaysian Sponsor Declaration Letter – Sponsor’s Income RM2,000 and above (Surat Akuan Penaja Tempatan – Pendapatan Penaja RM2,000 ke atas) – stamped by Commissioner of Oaths.

Sponsor’s Proof of income (last 3 months salary slip (CTC by company)/ bank book/ bank statement (CTC by Bank), EPF Statement, form J)

Latest 3 months pay slip, Certified True Copy by the company

Bank Statement CTC by the bank

Confirmation letter from the employer with letter head (If working) – Certified True copy (CTC) by the company
Business license/ company ROC/ Form J (If self -employed)

Borang J (for self-employed)

If the Malaysian spouse/ sponsor is unemployed or has no source of income, some JIM accepts bank statement but others require the applicant to get another sponsor with income. You need a declaration letter to explain your financial situation.
Sponsor statement form – Husband/ wife Interview (Borang kenyataan penaja – temuduga suami/ isteri)
Declaration Letter to support husband/ wife’s social visit pass (Surat Akuan Suami/ Isteri bagi Menyokong Pas Lawatan Sosial – PLS)
‘Security Bond’ form (stamped RM10.00 at LHDN Office) – Payment for Security Bond can be made at the Immigration office or online.

How to fill Security Bond Form and Rates for Different Countries

Sponsor and spouse’s identity card (certified true copy, CTC by JPN) and Birth certificate. If the sponsor is not the spouse, you will need both of their IC’s.
Passport (all pages like the info page, visas, stamped pages) – Applicant and Sponsor. CTC not required for passports.
Current Pass (Social/ Special) of the Applicant must be valid during time of application. If the pass is expired, you can apply for a Special Pass at the JIM – free of charge the first time, extension costs RM100.
Wedding photo (Size: 4R) of the couple only, bride wearing wedding gown – Paste the photo on a white A4 paper.
Proof of residential address (utility bill)
Rental agreement (with copy of landlord’s IC certified by JPN) or Sales and Purchase Agreement (SNP) document
Why certain documents cannot be produced
Parents allow you to stay at their house (if you are living with them)
LTSVP Immigration Fee: RM90 to be by credit/ debit card
Security Bond Fee to be paid online ( imi.gov.my/EBayaran )
You may be informed to attend an interview before the approval can be made.
After the application, you will receive an acknowledgment slip and you can call the number on the slip after 30 working days to find out the approval outcome ( Source )
Some of the applicants had to wait around 2-3 months for the pass to be approved.
While waiting for the outcome, the foreign applicant is not allowed to leave Malaysia.
You will usually get a 6 months visa and can apply for extension after 6 months and you may get an extension of 3 – 5 years every renewal, depending on your case, example whether or not you have kids.
You will get a Visa sticker to be placed on the passport

Six Months Cooling Period

Some applicants mentioned that they were able to submit their LTSVP applications without the 6 months cooling period. It might be case by case basis, kindly clarify with the officer.

Jul 2022: In the comments here, some said that they submitted their LTSVP application right after marriage registration but others mentioned cooling period is still applicable.

Sep 2022: Some said cooling period is only applicable to foreign husband. Others mentioned it’s not required.

Thank you for all the information in this group. My British husband succeeded in applying for the Long Term Social Visit Pass (LTSVP) also known as the Malaysian Spouse Visa, in the first attempt itself. We would like to share our experience and the steps which we took in obtaining the LTSVP and hopefully, this serves as some sort of a guide to those who are applying. We have to admit that this is not an easy process. They will be lots of hurdles, challenges, delays, frustrations, countless of trips to the Immigration departments (we went there at least once every fortnight to get updates and were in and out of different government offices every week or so!) and etc. However, keep calm and know that with determination, persistence and LOTS of PATIENCE, the approval will come!

WHICH IMMIGRATION BRANCH OFFICE TO APPLY

The first/new LTSVP application must be made in the Immigration state branch office in accordance with the address stated in the Malaysian Spouse NRIC. In our case, the address in my NRIC is in Klang and hence, the Immigration Branch Office that we went to for the LTSVP application is the Jabatan Imigresen Negeri Selangor in Bangunan PKNS, Shah Alam.

WHAT HAPPENED IF THE SOCIAL PASS/SPECIAL PASS OF THE FOREIGN SPOUSE EXPIRED BEFORE OR DURING THE LTSVP APPLICATION

The social pass/special pass must be valid at the time of the submission of the LTSVP application. We had to renew and extend my husband’s social pass and later on special pass several times during the process. We obtained the first extension from the Immigration Putrajaya Immigration Department on the grounds of “referring to state Immigration for LTSVP process”. The second extension was also obtained from the Putrajaya Immigration Department on the grounds of “pending LTSVP application”. The third extension was done in the Shah Alam immigration on the grounds of “pending LTSVP decision”. The third renewals and onwards required an appeal letter or “Surat Rayuan”. In our case, the immigration officer in the Shah Alam Immigration prepared the said Surat Rayuan for us and we just had to sign it accordingly. With that, we obtained the third extension without any difficulty. His third extension expired once again when the LTSVP was still pending approval. We checked with the immigration officer in the Shah Alam office to see if we require the fourth extension. According to the officer, if the pass expires when a LTSVP has been accepted for processing and is pending decision, no further extension is required. However, if the application comes back to the applicant requiring further information/documents to support the application, then an extension of pass must be made.

HOW LONG WAS THE LTSVP APPLICATION PROCESS?

We applied on 16 November 2021 and obtained approval on 11 February 2022. Our documents for submission were complete and in order and hence we were not called up in between to submit further information / documents in support of our application. If the immigration calls up for submission of further or additional information/document, the process might be delayed and could not take longer.

HOW SOON CAN YOU APPLY FOR LTSVP?

In our case, we applied immediately right after our Registration of Marriage. Note that the 6 months waiting period is no longer applicable. We went to the Immigration Office in Shah Alam on the very same day with our ROM, right after the signing ceremony to get the list of documents required and then went back a week later with the complete documents for submissions.

FEES INVOLVED

Every extension of social visit pass/special pass : RM100 LTSVP application fees : RM90 Security Bond : differs according to the country of the foreign spouse. For British foreign spouses, the security bond is RM1,500.00.

🗂DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR THE LTSVP APPLICATION

🗂 The list of documents required is different in every immigration branches and the list gets updated very frequently so make sure you get the latest list from the relevant immigration branch right before your application. The following documents, in both originals and photocopies, must be brought along during submission.

📌Sijil Daftar Perkahwinan / Marriage Certificate

📌Cabutan Daftar Perkahwinan. This is different from Marriage Certificate. This can be obtained by applying for it at the JPN Putrajaya office. The fee is RM50 per copy. The original copy must be submitted to the Immigration Department.

📌 Surat Penaja Required : Latest 3 months payslips of sponsor, latest 3 months bank statements of sponsor, NRIC copy of sponsor, latest 3 months EPF statements of sponsor

📌Surat Akuan Isteri Menurut Undang-undang Required : This needs to be affirmed by a Commissioner for Oaths / Notary Public

📌Surat Akuan Required : Passport sized photos of both husband and wife, and this form needs to be affirmed by a Commissioner for Oaths / Notary Public

📌Akuan Suami/Isteri Bagi Menyokong Permohonan Lawatan Sosial Oleh Suami/Isteri kepada Warganegara

📌Security Bond Required : A witness and this must be endorsed by Setem Hasil LHDN RM 10. Buy a RM10 setem hasil from any post office and then bring it to the LHDN office for endorsement.

#2. Documents important for the spouse of a Malaysian citizen

Photocopy of Marriage Certificate.
The Malaysian Sponsor Statement form.
Two passport-size pictures
Statutory Declaration of your marriage. Also, you must prove that it is still in effect.
If you have children, you must include photocopies of their birth certificates.

Wedding pictures.
Address of your spouse in Malaysia.
If your spouse in Malaysia is employed, you must provide a letter of support from the employer.

To apply for the Malaysia social visit pass (Long Term) as an elderly who needs support and care from a resident or citizen of Malaysia, you must provide the following documents.

Personal Bond stamped with an RM10.00 revenue stamp
A Statutory Declaration from the citizen or permanent resident in Malaysia.
The ID of the sponsor.
Security Bond stamped with an RM10.00 revenue stamp.

Malaysia Launches New Social Visit Pass

Malaysia has recently launched a new social visit pass named PLS@XPATS, which allows social visit pass holders to work in the country for up to 30 days. The nature of the work must be considered critical or urgent and is only allowed in selected sectors, such as education, construction, and manufacturing, among others.

On October 3, 2022, Malaysia launched a new social visit pass named PLS@XPATS, which will allow holders of social visit passes to work in Malaysia for up to 30 days. The type of work allowed must be in a specific sector and considered urgent or critical.

The government hopes the program can transform Malaysia into a hub for digital nomads in the region while boosting digital adoption across the country.

What are the permitted sectors that PLS@XPATS holders can work under?

Applicants of the PLS@XPATS pass can only work under these selected sectors:

Government sector;
Government link companies (companies in which the Malaysian government has a controlling stake); or
The private sector but under the following categories:

Oil, gas, and energy;
Healthcare;
Finance and banking;
Construction;
Information, technology, and infrastructure;

Critical work criteria

An essential condition for obtaining the PLS@XPATS pass is the definition of the work that is to be conducted. Foreign companies must prove that the foreign nationals they hire under this pass are conducting critical work, which is defined as emergency work, repair work, maintenance, installations, or recovery/reinstallation.

This must be accompanied by a job description and a work schedule.

Processing time

The Immigration Department will process new applications within three business days of submission. This is much faster than the process to obtain a Professional Visit Pass, which can take up to 75-135 business days.

The applicant will receive an approval letter that they must present to Malaysian immigration upon arrival, at the point of entry. Foreigners who require a visit before entering Malaysia must obtain a Visa Without Reference (VWR) at the Malaysian Embassy/High Commission/Consulate.

A Malaysian Long Term Social Visit Pass is issued to foreign nationals who want to stay in Malaysia for a period longer than six months.

It is issued to the family members of Employment Pass holders or spouses of Malaysian citizens as well as to foreigners who need to undergo medical treatment in Malaysia.

However, the Malaysia Long Term Social Visit Pass is most commonly issued to the spouses/family members of Malaysians or Malaysian foreign residents, which is why it’s known as a Malaysia spouse visa.

Who is Eligible for a Malaysia Long Term Social Visit Pass?

As the name suggests, the Malaysian Long Term Social Visit Pass (spouse visa) is available to:

The foreign national spouse of a Malaysian citizen
Common-law spouse
Children over 21 (they must not be married)
Parents or parents-in-law
Foreign nationals seeking medical treatment in Malaysia and 1 companion

Requirements for a Malaysia Long Term Social Visit Pass

When applying for a Malaysian Long Term Social Visit Pass, applicants must submit the following documents to the Immigration Department of Malaysia:

Two copies of the visa applications forms IMM.12, IMM.55, and IMM.38
Complete copies of the applicant’s passport, including personal information pages, previous visas, and the cover.

Documents required for the family members of Employment Pass holders:

A supporting letter from the EP holder’s employer
An authorization letter from the EP holder’s employer
2 recent passport-size pictures of the applicant/s
Marriage certificate (if applicable)
Birth certificates of children, or adoption papers (as applicable)
Custody papers, if applicable
Complete photocopies of all the applicants’ passports
EP holder’s Letter of Approval
Personal Bond stamped with a RM10.00 revenue stamp
A Statutory Declaration from the Malaysian citizen or permanent resident
The ID of the sponsor

Documents required for medical treatment:

An official letter from the relevant Government or Specialist Hospital

Keep in mind, that this is not a complete list of required documents. Applicants/sponsors must enquire with the Malaysia Immigration Department about a full list of documents.

When submitting documents, all the photocopies have to be accompanied by the original.

Additionally, the birth/marriage certificates have to be Certified True Copy (CTC) by an Embassy/Consulate of the specific country.

All the documents have to be in English. If they are not, they must be translated by either the relevant Embassy/Consulate or Institut Terjemahan Buku Malaysia.

How to apply the Malaysia spouse visa?

It is the Immigration Department of Malaysia who issues the Long Term Social Visit Pass.

The Malaysian citizen/EP holder has to submit the application along with the required documents (see below) to the Immigration Department or an Immigration Office in Malaysia prior to the arrival of the foreign national.

If the applicant is the spouse of a Malaysian citizen , he/she must be present along with the Malaysian when applying for the Long Term Social Visit Pass at the Immigration Department.

Malaysia Visa With Reference for a Long Term Social Visit Pass

Before the foreign national can travel to Malaysia, he/she must get a Visa With Reference (VDR) from the nearest Malaysian embassy/consulate.

To apply for a Malaysian Visa With Reference, they’ll need a Visa Approval Letter from the Immigration Department (ie. the reference) beforehand.

All foreign nationals who travel to Malaysia for purposes other than tourism must apply for a VDR.

Documents required for a Malaysia Visa With Reference are:

Visa applications forms IMM.12, IMM.55, and IMM.38
Visa With Reference questionnaire form
Two recent photographs of both spouses/applicants
Copies of both spouses passports/applicants
ID card of the Malaysian sponsor/spouse
Copy of marriage certificate
Statutory Declaration regarding the status of marriage
Security Bond stamped with an RM10.00 revenue stamp
Birth certificate of children, if applicable
Proof of the sponsor’s financial income

Keep in mind that this is not a complete list of requirements. Please check the website of the relevant Malaysian embassy/consulate or contact them to learn of the complete requirements and their opening hours.

Duration of the Malaysia Spouse Visa

The Long Term Social Visit Pass is issued for a minimum of six months and a maximum of five years. It can be renewed before it expires.

Working with a Malaysia Long Term Social Visit Pass

Family members of Employment Pass holders, cannot work with simply a Long Term Social Visit Pass. If they find an employer, they must apply for their own Employment Pass.

Working permit for Spouse of Malaysian Citizen

Spouses of Malaysian citizens can work in Malaysia without having to change their Long Term Social Visit Pass into an Employment Pass.

Instead, they have to get an endorsement to work in their passport by the Immigration Department of Malaysia, which is free of charge.

To apply for the work endorsement, the spouse has to submit a letter of application along with the letter of appointment or company registration evidence, their marriage certificate and their valid Long Term Social Visit Pass to the Visa, Pass and Permit Division of the Immigration Headquarters or the nearest state Immigration office.

If the Malaysia Long Term Social Visit Pass holder gets a work endorsement, they are allowed to work in any profession.
