Based on a true story, The Journey of Karma is about a mother who struggles to bring up her young and pretty daughter Karma (Poonam Pandey) who aspires to go abroad to pursue her higher studies. Life takes a different turn when Karma’s stepfather (Shakti Kapoor) makes lecherous advances towards her and expresses his feelings for her. Karma decides to pay a price to achieve her ambitions and gives in to him.

Artist Who Recorded JoJo Siwa’s ‘Karma’ A Decade Ago Goes Viral—And Outcharts Siwa On iTunes

Days after former “Dance Moms” and Nickelodeon star JoJo Siwa released her single “Karma” in an attempt to pivot to a more mature image, a recording of the same track from 2012 by the largely unknown artist Brit Smith went viral on TikTok, prompting Smith to release her version—and earning Smith a higher rank on the iTunes chart than Siwa.

JoJo Siwa released her single “Karma” on April 5 to a generally negative critical reception after teasing for weeks that her image, formerly curated for young audiences, would shift to a more mature focus.

Within days of Siwa’s single release, clips of the unreleased music video from former singer Brit Smith’s 2012 recording of the song went viral on TikTok, with some garnering millions of likes and many commenters praising Smith’s take on the track.

The song was written by Rock Mafia, a songwriting and production duo, and Smith’s version of the track was produced by Timbaland, who also co-starred in her unreleased video.

Smith told Page Six she wanted “Karma” to be her debut single, but her label Interscope Records wanted to release her song “Provocative” instead—which dropped in 2013, complete with a will.i.am feature and a music video starring Betty White, though the song failed to chart.

As of Monday afternoon, Smith’s recording of the song (released under the title “Karma’s a Bitch”) ranks No. 8 on the U.S. iTunes pop charts, while Siwa’s “Karma” is No. 89.

Siwa told TMZ she does not know who Smith is and denied allegations made by social media users that she “stole” Smith’s song, stating it is not uncommon for songs to get passed around to other artists before being released.

Surprising Fact

Smith told Page Six that Rock Mafia had originally written “Karma” with Miley Cyrus in mind, but she passed on it. Some social media users had also speculated “Karma” was intended for Cyrus based an exchange between Cyrus and Rock Mafia on X in 2012, in which the latter used the hashtag #karmasabitch.

Siwa also stirred controversy during her “Karma” rollout for stating in an interview with Billboard she wants to “start a new genre of music” called “gay pop,” citing Miley Cyrus and Lady Gaga as influences for her new musical direction. Musical duo Tegan and Sara—twin sisters who are both openly gay and have been releasing music since 1999— stitched a TikTok of Siwa’s Billboard interview, in which they silently stared into the camera before smirking. “These gay popstars love Jojo,” they captioned the video. Out Magazine posted a list, “as part of our love for Siwa,” ranking 25 of the best “gay pop” songs from the 1970s to the present. Siwa clarified to TMZ that she did not mean to imply she created the genre, stating: "I definitely am not the inventor of gay pop, for sure not. But I do want to be a piece in making it bigger than it already is.”

Siwa released “Karma” earlier this month, admitting the single was an attempt to shed her previous image as a child star. She rose to fame as a dancer on the Lifetime reality show “Dance Moms,” and signed a deal with Nickelodeon in 2017 that allowed Siwa to star in multiple Nickelodeon projects and for the network to use her for live programming. Siwa previously forayed into music with her single “ Boomerang ” in 2016, which has nearly one billion views on YouTube. Her rebrand with “Karma” has been largely panned by critics and social media users. Vulture slammed the single’s “faux-edgy lyrics, performed with all the conviction of the elementary-age students who used to be her fans.” Rolling Stone criticized Siwa as “trying too hard to shock us,” rejecting her self-professed comparisons to Cyrus. “Karma” has gone viral on TikTok, in part because Siwa has consistently promoted the song to her 45 million TikTok followers—but many of the top comments on Siwa’s videos are critical of the song.

Ciara is tracking her weight loss journey as she looks to drop 70 pounds after welcoming her fourth child last December.

Earlier this week, the singer hopped on Instagram to reveal her weight, while adding that she plans to lose 70 pounds of post-baby weight.

"Trying to lose 70lbs post baby, prepare for a show and tour while breastfeeding, and running my businesses," she wrote alongside a photo of herself. "Shout out to all my mammas out there gettin in, I see you! ToughSh$t."

Ciara subsequently added a series of photos in which she revealed her current weight alongside a slideshow of images of what's happening in her life these days.

Back in December, Ciara and  Russell Wilson welcomed their third child together, a baby girl. Amora Princess Wilson, born at nine pounds, one ounce, shares a middle name with her older sister, six-year-old Sienna Princess. Ciara and Wilson also have a three-year-old son Win Harrison, and the singer is  mother to nine-year-old son Future Zahir with her ex, Future .

'Karma' catches up to Brit Smith as singer's 2012 cut overtakes JoJo Siwa's on charts

Internet drama might not end your career, but it can certainly knock you off the U.S. iTunes pop charts. 

JoJo Siwa has experienced all of this and more in the last couple weeks, following the release of her single “Karma” , in an attempt to shed her whimsical and child-like persona. Think: Miley Cyrus. 

The 20-year-old teased snippets of the unreleased song to fans for weeks, telling Billboard April 5 that she was “so excited to bring this version of pop music back … I want to start a new genre of music … Well, it's called gay pop.” 

It didn’t take long for people to start piling on, openly making fun of the former Nickelodeon and “Dance Moms” star in the comments of that video and a number of other videos since with remarks about her outfits, exaggerated dance moves and some of the statements Siwa made while promoting the single. 

Then TikTok users began to pull up receipts, proof that Siwa’s single was actually recorded in 2012 by Brit Smith, then a newcomer on the scene.  Many users said they felt deceived by Siwa, and immediately began siding with Smith. 

“Brooo the fact that Britt Smith sang this in 2012 and it was never released so Jojo taught she could trick us all,” one user wrote. Others chimed in to say they liked Smith’s version “100% better.” 

Smith’s version of “Karma” became viral in the days following the discovery, gaining traction quickly.

It is now No. 8 on the iTunes charts, knocking Siwa's version from the list altogether.

Here’s what we know.

Britt Smith addresses ‘Karma’ in interview, calling the attention a ‘shock’ 

Smith sat down with Page Six last week, confirming that she recorded the song more than a decade ago. 

“Yeah, back in 2012 so it's a shock to me that it's got a new life, which is amazing. But yeah, with Rock Mafia back in the day. It was supposed to be my first single. And … things changed. And I went with ‘Provocative,’ instead. And shouldn’t have done that really. We should have gone with 'Karma.' That was my first choice,” she said. 

Smith says that she left the music industry after releasing "Provocative," telling the publication that “it [Karma] hasn’t seen the light of day until now.”  

Renowned producer Timbaland not only produced the unreleased single, but also starred in the music video alongside Smith.  “Karma” was never released because Smith's record label at the time thought “Provocative” was the better single, causing “Karma” to take the backseat at the time. And the rest was history. 

Smith said she was beyond flattered to receive compliments about her version of "Karma" so many years later, telling Page Six “That’s very nice of them to say. I just feel like it's a testament to how strong the song is itself that it stood the test of time … 12 years later.”

“I’m just happy people are hearing it and liking it,” she concludes.

Smith also said she felt like Siwa did the song justice, saying “It’s nice to hear different interpretations of it.  I was attached to my version, but its nice to hear.” 

While Smith doesn’t have any immediate plans to release more music, she said the positive response is making her “question” whether she should “jump back in a little bit.” 

Smith has moved to capitalize off all the new-found attention in recent days, posting her official music video on YouTube, interacting with fans and keeping an eye on the charts , of course. 

JoJo Siwa won’t back down, ‘happy’ to release ‘Karma’ despite criticism

Its business as usual for Siwa, who continues to post about “Karma” on social media. She has yet to address the online controversy publicly. 

But she did clarify her comments about “gay pop,” telling TMZ on April 10 “I definitely am not the inventor of gay pop, for sure not. But I do want to be a piece in making it bigger than it already is. I want to bring more attention to it."

Siwa says she is “happy” with “Karma” despite all the online hate she has received. 

“The internet has taken me through the freaking ringer. But at the end of the day, I made the art that I wanted to, and I’m so happy, so proud, so excited to bring this version of pop music back,” she told Billboard.
