Known to the world as the Jewel of Kathiawar, Jamnagar is an offbeat tourist holiday destination in Gujarat brimming with the ornate building, pristine coastal region and picturesque lakes. Located on the coast of Gulf of Kutch, Jamnagar is the largest city on the western region of India. In the heart of the city, there is a fort amidst the lake while the coastal area is covered with an oil refinery, which is largest in the world, beaches and spectacular Marine National Park. Jamnagar (former Nawanagar) came into limelight 444 years ago when it was established on the bank of Nagmatti and Rangmattiriver by the Shri Jam Raval, who is deemed as one of the heirs of Lord Krishna. The city witnessed a major makeover during the rule of KS Ranjit Sinhi, who was also a famous cricketer. Ranjit Sinhi, along with the famous architecture Edward Lutyens, reconstructed the city in European style and made many gardens, lakes and important landmarks like Willingdon Crescent, Pratap Vilas Palace, and Solarium were built under his patronage. After such major uplift, the city started getting the attention of people and was captioned "Jewel of Khathiyawad." Legends even say that Lord Krishna used to stay in this city when he moved out of Mathura.

There are multiple attractions and places to see in Jamnagar but one place that dominates the old city is the Lakhota Fort, the original seat of Jamnagar ruler and Ranmal Lake, which surrounds the fort. Respiratory in the fort showcases finest sculptures from the nearby evacuation sites, dating from 9th to 18th centuries. Within the walking distance from Ranmal lake is the Kotha Bastion, which was once the storehouse of rulers' weapons'.

In the heart of the old city is the circular Darbar Gadh, an area where the rulers of Jamshedpur received members of the general public and heard their grievances. The lanes leading off from Darbar Gadh are worth exploring as one can see people putting together different colours and making the finest Bandhani fabric. In this area, there are two Jain temples, the Shantinath and Adinath temple, entirely covered with mirror, gold leaf, murals and mosaics, one cannot ignore these temples. Close to the temples is the 19th century Ratan Bhai mosque, its doors inlaid with mother-of-pearl.

A place of eternal beauty, Jamnagar is also an ornithologist's paradise. Jamnagar has a start of the art ecosystem called Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary. This birding paradise houses many avian species like the black-winged kite, brahminy kite, great thick-knee, common greenshank, grey francolin, etc. A major part of Jamshedpur is hugging the Gulf of Kutch. The coastal area of Jamnagar is famed for Marine National Park. Evidently the first marine park in India, this is the only place in India where one can see coral reefs without diving in the water. Sights like pods of dolphin swimming in the water and migratory birds crossing the azure Gulf of Kutch are quite prominent. One can also visit the nearby beaches like Narara beach, Balachadi beach, and Madhi beach to bask in the sun or for long walks.

Making brass utensils, and tie-dye fabrics were the main occupations of Jamnagar people until there was emergence in the refinery sector. Refinery complex owned by Reliance in Jamnagar is the world's largest oil refinery in the world, which on an average 660,000 barrels of crude oil per day. Earlier, Jamnagar was also called 'pearl city' as many as it was a pearl fishing center with one of the biggest pearl fisheries in the world.

If you are in Jamnagar for work and wondering about the things to do in Jamnagar or if there are any tourist places in Jamnagar then I have got you covered. The city may surprise you with the options of places to visit in Jamnagar especially because there is something for everyone.

Like most people, my visit to Jamnagar was for work purpose. And while Ghughra sandwich was on my list of must eat in Jamnagar, I wanted to explore more in Jamnagar city.  

While Jamnagar always meant the gateway to Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary and a stopover before heading to Beyt Dwarka , there is a lot that the city has to offer.

Jamnagar is now on the world map thanks to Anant Ambani – Radhika Merchant wedding. But before Vantara Jamnagar was set up and before the Jamnagar became an International airport, the city has always been known as the ‘World’s Oil City’ thanks to the Jamnagar Refinery .

Reliance and Nayara have their oil refineries in Jamnagar and that is the reason, the city is also known as ‘World’s Oil City’. The Jamnagar manufacturing division is the world’s largest refining hub.

Formerly known as Nawanagar , the city of Jamnagar was established by an heir of Lord Krishna, Shri Ram Javal on the banks of River Nagmatti and Ragmatti. 

Apart from that Jamnagar is a lovely city which has plenty of places to visit such as beaches, lakes, temples, ancient structures and a huge option for shopping.

Popularly referred to as the Jewel of Kathiawar , the city of Jamnagar is also known as Choti Kashi due to the sheer number of temples present in and around.

This rich and diverse past of the city has resulted in multiple attractions, which comprise ancient and natural sites which are perfect for visitors of all kinds.

PLACES TO VISIT IN JAMNAGAR | THINGS TO DO IN JAMNAGAR

If you are spending some time in Jamnagar, the following are some of the places worth considering as they are considered the best Jamnagar visiting places . 

Lakhota Lake, Lakhota Palace and Lakhota Museum

Unfortunately, when I visited, except for the lake, everything else was closed due to Covid -19 restrictions in early January 2021! Google said it was open and I was so disappointed to reach a closed gate! Nevertheless, I am sharing whatever I was able to see.

Upon giving an entry fee of Rs. 10 to enter the lake premises, the thing that came into my mind was Kankaria Lake, Ahmedabad . It looked so similar in structure, the pathways, the boards and activities. 

Lakhota Lake is a lovely lake to spend some leisure time in the evening or walk in the mornings.

Lakhota Lake was earlier known as Ranmal Lake, which has been given a splendid facelift.

In the middle of the lake lies the Lakhota Palace and Lakhota Museum. And the periphery of the lake is a manmade 1.8 km periphery with jharokha sit-outs overlooking the centrepiece!

The palace entry is separate and chargeable (which I couldn’t go to!). Nevertheless, the palace looked amazing from the periphery and I had a great time photographing the birds in the lakes and the surroundings. Lakhota palace was made in the mid-19th century and has an archaeology museum that has sculptures dating back to the 9th century and houses firearms and ancient pottery items in its exhibit areas.

I walked around the periphery and explored that there are small garden spaces, children’s play areas and food kiosks. There is also a small city museum, bird’s enclosure and aquarium (INR 10 separate entry fees). Boating is another option but it was also closed when I visited.

Note: The lake has 9 entry and exit gates. Some of the gates were closed for renovation. It is best to choose a gate closest to your accommodation or area of interest.

Bhujiyo Kotho

The five-storied monument located on the bank of the Lakhota Lake is believed to have been built to provide protection and act as a watchtower. Now the tower provides a panoramic view of the city overlooking Lakhota lake. It is one of the most famous tourist places in Jamnagar because it is said to have a secret pathway which leads to Bhuj . 

Bhujiyo Kotho is not in great condition due to which it is under restoration and hence closed for visitors.

Bala Hanuman Temple

Take a quick exit from gate no. 8 of Lakhota lake to pray at the Bala Hanuman temple. This temple has to be on your places to visit in Jamnagar list.

Talk about tourist attractions with religious faith and this is the place to be in Jamnagar. The humble-looking structure houses the idols of Lord Ram, Lord Lakshman, Goddess Sita and Lord Hanuman. The temple has set a record in the Guinness Book of Records for chanting ‘Shri Ram, Jai Ram, Jai Jai Ram’ uninterruptedly since August 1, 1964 . 

Visitors can pay their respects by praying to the idols or even join in the chanting process anytime between 6am to 9pm any day of the week.

Darbargadh Palace

I was quite excited to visit a palace in Jamnagar.

But it quickly turned into disappointment when I came to know that most of this palace was destroyed in the 2001 earthquake. What remains now is the outer periphery which has been turned into a market. Shops selling Bandhani fabrics are lined here in the maroon-coloured structure. Honestly, there was nothing to see here.

Jain temples of Jamnagar

In the Chandi Bazaar area of Jamnagar, two Jain temples are of utmost importance and one of the best places to visit in Jamnagar.

Shantinath temple and Adinath temple have existed since the 16th century and hold religious as well as historical value. Adinath temple is said to be the first Jain Tirthanker and there are 52 small temples which are built around the primary structure.

Both the temples look humble from the outside but have bold and vibrant colours inside. There is intricate work on the pillars, ceilings and walls of the temple. The recently renovated Shantinath temple is a sight to behold with its vibrant arches and gates.

Explore Jamnagar old city on foot

I walked from Lakhota lake to Chandi Bazaar to explore the labyrinth alleys of Jamnagar. I always seem to find ample street photography opportunities in these places. All hail Google maps for taking me through the tiny lanes.

PLACES TO VISIT NEAR JAMNAGAR

Jamnagar is happily settled in such a place that it is blessed with amazing ecosystems around it. Visitors have to leave the city to experience the lovely nature retreat that it offers. You need more than one day in Jamnagar to cover these places. It is ideal to spend a weekend in Jamnagar to cover these places to visit near Jamnagar.

Pirotan Island

There are over 40 small and big islands around Jamnagar. One of the most important and popular ones is Pirotan Island as it comes under the Marine National Park .

The island occupies 3 square kilometres and is one of the two islands in the National Park that can be visited. Visitors who wish to visit here need prior permission from the Department of Forest Department, Customs Department, and the Ports Department.

After the permission, one needs to hire a boat from the port and it takes around two hours to reach the island. There is no place to stay on the island. Also, there are no arrangements for food and water arrangements here so prepare accordingly.

The park offers amazing varieties of mangroves and coral reefs. There are many aquatic creators such as herring gull, seagull, jellyfish, starfish, octopus, sea snakes, hermit crabs, sea horse, green sea turtles and dolphins which can be spotted here.

Narara National Park

The easier option than Pirotan Island is Narara. Also known as Marine National Park , it is spread over an area of 458 square kilometres and is blessed with a great diversity of ecosystems. These ecosystems support species of birds, fishes and reptiles.

It also has coral reefs and mangroves, which have great conservational value. It is considered to be one of the most popular tourist attractions in Jamnagar and one of the must-visit places in Jamnagar.

Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary

Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary is spread over an area of 6 square kilometres and includes a rich diversity of species. Apart from having rich varieties of marine and freshwater habitats, the place also includes diverse ecosystems such as marshy lands, salt pans, mangroves, mudflats, creeks, sandy beaches, and forest scrub making it a must to visit place for nature lovers. 

The sanctuary includes around 220 different species of both native and migratory birds.

SHOPPING IN JAMNAGAR

Just like the crafts of Kutch are famous, Jamnagar is the hub for tie and dye fabrics in Gujarat.

Locally known as Bandhani or Bandhej , the fabric is painstakingly prepared wherein a plain cloth is tied with threads and dyed to bring out various patterns. various types of fabrics are used such as cotton, polyester, silk which are turned into bedsheets, sarees, stoles, kurta sets, curtains, etc. in order to make sarees even richer, they are sewn with embroidered borders or mirror embellishments making Jamnagar Bandhani sarees, a speciality in itself.

There are many shops in Chandi Bazaar which sell authentic and beautiful Bandhani fabrics. Out of the entire lot, Mahavir Bandhani Store is the most promising store as it is a pioneer in the business with 100+ years of experience. They have a huge collection and it is impossible to go empty-handed from here.

MUST TRY FOOD IN JAMNAGAR

Jamnagar has a different kind of food scene in spite of it being in Gujarat. 

Dry kachoris are something my colleague used to get for us and I have been a fan of it ever since. My favourite is the dry fruit kachori . There are 25 different fillings available. They can be packed and carried as souvenirs of Jamnagar as they can easily last for 2-3 weeks!

Spicy ghughras of Jamnagar are extremely famous and one cannot leave the city without trying this street food. It is served with raw onions and tangy chutney.

Chaas soda and ghorvu is also a street food worth trying. Apart from this visitors must try Kathiyawadi thali to get the best flavour of Kathiyawad.

• Respect the temples and their rules. Skirt and pants till knee level are good. Avoid spaghetti and tank tops. Cover your shoulders with a scarf if necessary.
• Do not harm the structures by carving or writing on it.
• Do not litter any of the tourist areas.
• Wear camouflage colours when visiting sanctuary areas which will easily blend with the surrounding – green and brown shades work the best around wetlands.

Skamania Lodge offers first look at its fancy new glamping tents

This May, visitors to the Columbia River Gorge will have a new, luxurious glamping experience to try.

Skamania Lodge , the 175-acre Washington resort near Stevenson, offered a sneak peak this week into its new glamping tents, which will open to the public May 1 and are available to book now through the end of the season.

The wood-framed safari-style tents, which come with king beds and private bathrooms, are built on a hillside surrounded by trees, giving visitors the chance to sleep, relax and even bathe in the comfort of nature. While perhaps a step down from the lodge’s luxury treehouses or cabins, the glamping tents are certainly a step up from your basic hotel room, while barely resembling camping at all.

Jack Hansen, director of sales and marketing for Skamania Lodge, said the glamping tents are expected to be available from May through October, though the full extent of the season won’t be clear until after this first year.

“I do think that it’s a bit of an experiment,” Hansen said. “We’re going to see what the appetite for them is.”

Glamping at Skamania Lodge starts at $519 per night on offseason weekdays, rising through the summer and peaking at $1,069 per night over the Fourth of July weekend. Visitors can find slightly discounted prices in October, when the nightly rate dips down to $499 for a stay in what could be colder and wetter conditions.

“We’ll probably test them a bit this fall and see how it is to stay in there in October,” Hansen said of the new tents. “You don’t know until you know.”

Unlike traditional camping, the glamping tents all come with running water and electricity. Each comes with a small space heater and fan, though that is the extent of the climate control. The front flaps zip up and down, allowing guests to seal themselves in or be open to the fresh air. There is furniture inside, as well as an outdoor couch and chairs by a gas fire feature.

Guests can still enjoy the many amenities at the main lodge nearby, including yoga classes, a golf course and putting course, disc golf, an adventure park, ziplining and axe throwing, as well as meals at one of two dining rooms – a necessary amenity for glamping guests, who will only find a microwave and mini fridge in their tents.

Hansen said the new glamping experience will be part of “Treehouse Village,” where the new tents join the luxury treehouses, cabins and a villa. More of each type of accommodation may be built there in the future, depending on popularity, he said.

The new glamping tents have already been booked up through most of May, but a lot of availability remains through the summer . Hansen said the lodge has been excited about the new offerings, and is looking forward to seeing how popular they become.

“There’s a lot of buzz about them,” he said. “Glamping over the last decade has really come into more peoples’ vocabularies, everybody knows what it is, so it’s really nice to see our owners put their spin on it – you know, glamping Skamania style.”

That sinking feeling: why long-suffering Venice is quite right to make tourists pay

The overcrowded city is leading the way with a tax on day trippers. Surely other great European destinations should follow suit

V enice has had enough. It is sinking beneath the twin assaults of tourism and the sea and believes the answer lies in fending off visitors by charging them to enter . It is not alone. Tourism is under attack. Seville is charging for entry to the central Plaza de España. In Paris, the Mona Lisa is so besieged by flashing phones she is about to be banished to a basement . Barcelona graffiti shout , “Tourists go home, refugees welcome.” Amsterdam wants no more coach parties, nor does Rome .

The Venice payment will be complicated . It will apply at specific entry points only to day trippers to the city centre, not hotel guests. It will be a mere five euros and confined to peak times of day over the summer. This will hardly cover the cost of running it. It is a political gesture that is unlikely to stem the tourist flow round the Rialto and St Mark’s Square, let alone leave more room for Venetians to enjoy their city undisturbed by mobs.

As any visitor to Venice knows, large areas of it are empty of Venetians – the main island has lost more than 120,000 residents since the early 1950s. Streets and canals are boarded up. If the Grand Canal is lit up at night it is largely thanks to Airbnb. The tourist district is small and jammed with 40,000 visitors a day . Those who have taken the trouble to reach Venice will not be deterred by five euros.

Venice survived intact largely because its economy collapsed and the city realised its future prosperity depended on its antiquity. As it began to sink in the 1960s, writers such as Jan Morris and James Cameron reflected on their sad delight at being the last generation to see Venice before it disappeared. Now the lagoon has been dammed , but the sea is rising and the iron rods beneath the foundations are rusting and rotting. At vast expense they must be repaired, and it is only tourists who will pay the bills.

In Britain, tourism is the growth industry that gets very little attention and still less praise. Millions of visitors, overseas and domestic, come to London each year, a number that is steadily rising. But its assets have to be defended constantly from planners and developers set on demolition. In addition, there is little tourist destinations can do to expand their “offer”. Their appeal is a mostly a wasting asset. However, at least London has more space for all those tourists than poor Venice, which has just a mile or so of central streets to satisfy 30 million visitors a year .

What is for sure is that Europe’s tourism will last as long as it can guard its heritage. Europe is still a treasure trove of humanity’s past, embalmed in historic buildings, cultural quarters and old cities. Its appeal to the outside world has barely begun.

Americans have been the leading tourists in Europe for over half a century, with at least 43% of them having passports. Such documents are held by only 10% of Chinese people and only 7% of Indians . If the numbers of visitors from even just these two countries increase, as they were doing before the Covid-19 pandemic, many of the tourist sites in Europe would have to find new ways to accommodate them.

The task now is not so much to promote the wonders of Europe’s heritage as to conserve and work out how to manage it. Venice is the first such challenge. Some 49,000 remaining Venetian residents cannot possibly pay for the salvation of their city. Thirty million visitors to Venice can. The entry charge is merely a first step.

How soon other cities imitate Venice remains to be seen. In 2018, the Italian town of Bagnoregio, in the Lazio region, parts of which are crumbling downhill, imposed a charge on visitors to raise money for its rescue. It worked. One of the only British towns with the confidence to charge for entry is charming Portmeirion in north Wales. Despite being built by a modern architect in the 20th century, it has become Wales’s most popular attraction .

If I were Venice , I would be shameless. Visiting ancient places is a glorious indulgence. Those who enjoy it should pay accordingly. Good for Venice for showing the way.

Deep Beneath London, Onetime Bomb Shelters Will Become a Tourist Attraction

Used for spying, a phone exchange and more over the years, a semi-secret web of tunnels in central London could open to the public in 2027.

There’s a locked door on the eastbound platform of the Chancery Lane station of the London Underground. The door is unassuming, sturdy and white.

Behind it is a wide set of stairs leading to a roughly mile-long maze of tunnels built in the 1940s that were first intended to serve as a World War II shelter and later used for espionage, the storage of 400 tons of government documents and telecom services.

Welcome to the Kingsway Exchange tunnels, set roughly 100 feet below street level in the center of London, sprawling beneath the Underground’s Central Line. Soon they could enter a new chapter: Angus Murray, the owner of the complex, who bought the tunnels last summer, has applied for planning permission to the local authorities together with the architecture firm WilkinsonEyre to turn the tunnels into a tourist destination that could handle millions of people a year.

Mr. Murray’s London Tunnels is planning to invest a total of 220 million pounds (about $275 million) on restoring and preserving the tunnels, as well as adding technology for art installations and other attractions. Mr. Murray hopes to open the complex in 2027, and said that it would be able to host temporary art exhibitions, fashion shows and more.

At the moment, entering the tunnels requires riding a small elevator tucked behind a side door in an alleyway off a wide street in central London. (Visitors to the attraction would use a different, bigger entrance, Mr. Murray said.)

When the elevator doors open, you step into a World War II-era tunnel — one of 10 civilian shelters proposed by the British government after the beginning of the Blitz, the eight-month bombing of London by the Germans that started in September 1940. The tunnels were never used as shelters. By the time they were completed in 1942, the Blitz was over.

During the Cold War, the British government instructed its telephone department, which later became British Telecom, to set up a secret communications system in the tunnels that could survive a nuclear attack. The famous hotline between the Kremlin and the White House ran through the complex, according to the project’s website. Some of the phone exchange’s equipment in the tunnels still survives today, even though it hasn’t been used since at least the 1980s.

“The idea was that it would provide a degree of protection,” said Martin Dixon, a trustee for Subterranea Britannica , a charity that documents and tries to preserve underground spaces.

“If the Cold War had turned into something more serious, it would have allowed communications on some level to continue,” Mr. Dixon, who joined Subterranea Britannica about 40 years ago, said.

The tunnels under the Chancery Lane station of the tube are more than a mile long and in some places have a diameter of almost 25 feet. Those dimensions make them among the largest sets of tunnels built for people in a metropolitan city, Mr. Murray said.

“They have a fascinating history,” he said.

For a group of Post Office and telecoms workers in the decades after World War II, the tunnel complex became a workplace, some aspects of which have survived. In one room, the stuffy smell of an old carpet is inescapable. Another still holds the remnants of a canteen. Yet another has fake windows framing images of nature as decorations. There are still offices, as well as rooms where workers could spend the night.

Some parts of the tunnels are lined with fake walls, and doors with nothing behind them. The effect is not unlike watching a scene from the dystopian Apple TV+ show “Severance .”

A bar where postal workers could drink is also still there, and Mr. Murray said he hoped to revive it and make it London’s deepest underground bar.

The tunnels’ communication operation became obsolete in the 1980s, and in 2008 British Telecom put the tunnels up for sale . BT employees used to go down into the complex up until the 1990s to inspect for fire safety and other conditions. The tunnels were otherwise vacant.

Many details of the new attraction still need to be ironed out, but Mr. Murray said the cost of the experience would probably be in the same price range as that of other major tourist sites in London. (The Tower of London’s entry fee is about $40, and Westminster Abbey’s is about $36.)

Mr. Dixon, of Subterranea Britannica, said he was excited about the prospect of the Kingsway Exchange turning into an attraction — provided it’s safe and the history is preserved.

“I’ve seen thousands of underground spaces, from the mundane to the spectacular,” he said. The Kingsway Exchange is particularly interesting, he added, because of all the different functions it had. “It played its part in World War II, and was ready to play its part in the Cold War.”
