JOURNEY STUDIO ALBUMS
Released: April 1, 1975
Journey’s self-titled debut album was released in April 1975 and was the band’s first outing into the musical world. At the time, Journey was yet to adopt the arena rock sound that they would later become famous for. Instead, the album exhibited strong influences of jazz fusion and progressive rock, with extensive instrumental solos and complex musical arrangements.
Notable tracks include “Of a Lifetime” and “Mystery Mountain,” which offered a glimpse into the technical proficiency and artistic aspirations of the band. Though the album didn’t achieve significant commercial success, it laid the groundwork for what the band could accomplish. The album featured Neal Schon on guitars, Ross Valory on bass, Gregg Rolie on keyboards and vocals, Aynsley Dunbar on drums, and George Tickner on rhythm guitar. It was produced by Roy Halee and recorded at CBS Studios in San Francisco in late 1974. .

The band continued in a similar vein, leaning heavily towards progressive rock with intricate instrumental arrangements. The title track and “On a Saturday Nite” are often cited as highlights. However, the album failed to bring substantial commercial success, although it was a step forward in terms of songwriting and complexity. Neal Schon on guitars, Ross Valory on bass, and Gregg Rolie on keyboards and vocals returned for this album, with Aynsley Dunbar continuing to provide the drum work. The album was produced by Glen Kolotkin and was recorded at CBS Studios in San Francisco during late 1975.

While not commercially successful upon its release, it gained some retrospective recognition for marking a transitional phase for the band. As with the previous albums, the lineup featured Neal Schon on guitars, Gregg Rolie on keyboards and vocals, Ross Valory on bass, and Aynsley Dunbar on drums. When Steve Perry Performed His First Show With Journey
As the new frontman for Journey , Steve Perry had a suspicious audience to win over.
The date was Oct. 28, 1977, according to the liner notes for Journey's expansive Time3 box set, at the Old Waldorf in San Francisco. Journey co-founder Neal Schon says nobody was quite sure what to make of the recently installed singer, dressed in all white.
"I remember the first night that Steve Perry came onstage with us, and we played a couple of the songs that we had written. The audience was like, 'I don't know about that,'" Schon told Goldmine in 2013. "It was so different that it really kind of threw them off course."
Journey introduced him slowly, playing their full set without Perry, then bringing him on for an encore (which included the newly composed "Lights") at the intimate, 600-seat venue. In truth, this easing-in process worked to their benefit. After all, his bandmates were used to free-form prog-influenced instrumental work rather than the tighter-focused songs they had started constructing with Perry.
Put simply, they weren't so sure, either. "I had some problems when I first joined," Perry told Record Review in 1981. "There was the band, with three albums and a lot of road touring behind it, and all of the sudden there was this singer up there with the range of a soprano. They were going, 'What the hell is this?'"
Perry's circuitous path to that night at the Old Waldorf began when Journey still had their previous singer , Robert Fleischman. After a trio of under-performing jam band-type albums, Columbia Records demanded that they update their sound. That led to Fleischman, who clicked with Schon, co-composing three songs – "Anytime," "Winds of March" and "Wheel in the Sky," Journey's first charting single – that subsequently showed up on 1978's Infinity .
"I think Neal, who didn't want [Perry], wanted Robert," the band's original manager Herbie Herbert says in Don't Stop Believin': The Untold Story of Journey . "And then, when he realized how good he was, Neal was happy with the change. But it was a struggle; I had to shove him down Neal's throat."
They hit the road as an opening act for Emerson, Lake and Palmer , but Journey fans weren't connecting with Fleischman. That's when Herbert brought Perry in, first during an introductory band rehearsal and later – after Fleischman's inevitable ouster – as an offstage apprentice. A couple of shows in, they finally let Perry sing at the Old Waldorf, but only after Journey had finished their regular set.
"They didn’t want to make it with a lead singer," Perry told GQ in 2008. "They wanted to make it without one. They had [former Santana singer and keyboardist] Gregg Rolie , and that was enough. And he was a great vocalist for what they were looking for, but they didn’t want to have a singer out front. I can't speak for them, but I'm sure that if they could have been successful the way they originally set out to be, that would have been fine with them."
This was all a whirlwind for Perry, whose biggest exposure before joining Journey had been singing jingles on local commercials. He'd assembled a band called Alien Project that was reportedly in line for a contract with Columbia when their bass player was killed in an car crash. Their demo eventually landed on Herbert's desk, and he became the advocate that Perry needed.
"I wasn't completely sold on Perry," Rolie admits in the Time3 liner notes. "I don't think anybody was." Then, backstage at the Swing Auditorium in San Bernardino earlier that month, Perry grabbed Journey co-founder Ross Valory's bass and played a snippet of the still-unfinished "Lights." As they all began harmonizing, Rolie said, "It dawned on me right then that this could really be great."
Schon also began to warm to Perry, co-composing their first song together after a show in Colorado. "Immediately when Steve and I got together, I knew that we had chemistry," Schon told Goldmine . "I sat down with an acoustic guitar, and we were in one room in a hotel and I had these chords for ‘Patiently,’ and he just started singing and writing lyrics. And you know, within, I’d say, 45 minutes we had that song. And then the next one we did together — like in about 40 minutes again — it was ‘Lights.’ And it was just pretty much listening to him sing and me humming a few things, and organizing the chords, the arrangement and adding a few sections. That was that.”
"Patiently" would ultimately be one of four tracks credited to the songwriting duo on Infinity . From there, Perry eventually won everyone over, first with hard work and then with undeniable charisma. Perry had co-writing credits on eight of the 10 songs on Infinity , which nearly cracked the Billboard Top 20 – landing 64 places higher than Journey's best-charting pre-Perry album, 1977's Next . Eventually, it would earn multi-platinum sales.
But that was months away at this point. In the meantime, everyone on the outside was still getting used to the seismic changes happening within the group. "There were some die-hard Journey fans – but not enough of them to be worried about," Perry told Record Review . "Still, there were enough of them to cause me pain. They'd look at me funny and throw things at me."
He got dinged in print too. A review of Journey's stand at the Old Waldorf, published in the student-run Stanford Daily in October 1977, derisively focused on his nose, accusing Perry of "crooning through his beak" and referring to him, at another point, as "nose hose."
Journey got past this rough patch by staying on the road after the Roy Thomas Baker-produced Infinity arrived in January 1978, playing 172 cities in the U.S., Canada and Europe. Within a year, they were playing arenas, having scored a long-awaited Top 20 hit with "Lovin', Touchin' Squeezin'" – and the Perry-led Journey only got bigger in the decade to come, despite such humble beginnings.
Not everybody got it wrong, by the way. Joel Selvin, writing for the San Francisco Chronicle , said Perry "appeared fully confident and poised, and sang with considerable power." Billboard , meanwhile, later enthused about Infinity , "Journey has long been one of the most exciting of San Francisco bands and one of the most English-influenced too. The Waldorf performances show it to have expanded and improved dramatically in both regards. The combination of Perry's voice and Baker's influence has resulted in a smoother and less ponderous sound."

Samsung Unveils New Three-Part Docu-Series Celebrating the Skateboarding, Breaking and Surfing Communities on the Road to Paris 2024
The short documentaries explore each sport's iconic subcultures and their shared belief in openness.
Samsung Electronics, a Worldwide Olympic and Paralympic Partner, today launched a new documentary series designed to spotlight skateboarding, breaking and surfing on the Road to Paris 2024. The series, produced in collaboration with the Street League Skateboarding (SLS), Pro Breaking Tour (PBT) and World Surf League (WSL), will feature three short docu-series: “Concrete Dreams,” “Breaking Boundaries” and “The Next Wave.”
The first in the series, “Concrete Dreams,” which spotlights the skateboarding community’s journey to the Olympics, is now live on Samsung’s YouTube Channel and will be screened for fans at the SLS San Diego championship tour event on April 20. The breaking and surfing series will be released on April 25 and May 21, respectively, and premiere at PBT’s Atlanta event and WSL’s event in Tahiti.
Starring sport legends Shaun Tomson, Eric Koston and David “Kid David” Shreibman alongside Olympic athletes Johanne Defay (Surfing, France), Sky Brown (Skateboarding, Great Britain), Grace “Sunny” Choi (Breaking, U.S.) and many more, the project celebrates the communities that lie at the heart of each sport as they get set to open themselves to the world this summer.
This new project is a key part of Samsung’s Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024 campaign, ‘Open always wins,’ which claims that with an open mind, anything is possible — a motto these communities live by every day. Produced in collaboration with the SLS, PBT and WSL, the docu-series explores the iconic subcultures of each sport, their shared belief in openness and the impact that being part of the Olympic Games has on their communities — past, present and future.
The synopsis of the skateboarding documentary unveiled today is as follows:
- Concrete Dreams: From the birth of street skateboarding in the 1980s to its consecration at the Olympic Games Paris 2024, this is the story of a community built on one unspoken rule — respect. It encourages you to see the world in a different way, to go create and always get back up, no matter how often you fall.
The synopses of the next documentaries in the series are as follows:
- Breaking Boundaries: As breakers get ready for their Olympic Games Paris 2024 debut, this is the story of a global community born from the streets and shooting for the stars. It is a celebration of breaking as an explosion of energy and soul that gives you a sense of expression and belonging and encourages you to do something we’ve never seen before.
- The Next Wave: Surf legends and icons in the making share their story as they embark on their journey to Paris 2024. It is the ultimate love story between them and the ocean as they prepare to take that leap and a celebration of surf as a way of life, passed down to generations, and a culture that has not only survived but gotten stronger.
“Samsung is excited to support the skateboarding, breaking and surfing communities on their incredible journey to Paris 2024,” said Stephanie Choi, EVP & Head of Marketing of Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics. “We’re honored to tell their stories and help shine light on these communities to wider audiences through this docu-series. We hope they inspire many to push boundaries, support each other and always stay open.”
“We were really excited to partner with Samsung on this docu-series and share our story and our culture with the whole world,” said Tim Greenberg, WSL EVP, Content Strategy and Production. “Surfing is unlike any other sport on the planet. This is such an amazing opportunity to open up our community and celebrate what brings us all together.”
“This is a big year for us and our sport. The future of women surfers is really bright, and the Olympic Games give us that long-term vision,” said Johanne Defay (Surfing, France). “They are a chance for us to really show the world what surfing is all about. Not only our skill on the waves but what we stand for as a community — committed to giving back to our sport and our planet — and ‘The Next Wave’ truly honors that.”
“Everyone looks out for each other, that’s the special thing about having this small community,” said John John Florence (Surfing, U.S.). “It’s exciting to be able to open our community to the world with this documentary.”
“Finding skateboarding was like falling in love for the first time,” said Rayssa Leal (Skateboarding, Brazil). “I’m so excited to share our story with this documentary and show young girls what skateboarding is all about.”
“Skateboarding is a chance for people to show 100% of themselves and really push their own limits,” said Jagger Eaton (Skateboarding, U.S.). “What if you’re one morning away from making all your dreams come true? You never know how close you are to success. Hope you guys love the documentary as much as I did! I’m stoked to share our journey with you.”
“Skateboarding is all about freedom, you can just pick up your board and go anywhere. It’s like becoming a kid again,” said Aurelien Giraud (Skateboarding, France). “I hope our story inspires you to pick up that skateboard and enjoy the ride.”
“Breaking is special. When I’m dancing, it’s like nothing matters in the world except for me just being me,” said Grace “Sunny” Choi (Breaking, U.S.). “There’s going to be a lot of great opportunities coming out of the Olympic Games from the added awareness and hopefully also more parents wanting to put their kids into breaking. I hope this documentary makes you as excited as we are to share this culture with the world.”
“This was such an exciting project to be a part of,” said American skateboarding icon and entrepreneur, Eric Koston, who lent his perspective to “Concrete Dreams.” “Our sport has such a deep connection to film. To see these voices come together to celebrate our sport, our journey and our heritage is huge.”
In addition to the screenings at SLS, PBT and WSL events, the docu-series will go live on Samsung’s YouTube channel. Visit here to watch “Concrete Dreams” and check out the trailers for upcoming documentaries.

Crafting ‘Stereophonic’: How ‘Terrifying’ Rehearsals, Creative Clashes and a Soundproof Studio Led to Broadway’s Buzziest Show

A little over 10 years ago, David Adjmi was on an airplane, listening to Led Zeppelin’s “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You,” and picturing Robert Plant recording the vocals.
“It’s communicating desire and pain and anguish and torture and lust,” Adjmi says of the song. “I was thinking about all of these conflicting emotions and imagining him singing the raw vocal in a studio — the state he must have gotten into to sing it.”
Popular on Variety
Set entirely in a studio, “Stereophonic” examines the evolving relationships between musicians in a battle of egos and creative control. There are standout performances and Tony-worthy songs, but the show’s most intriguing aspect is how it plays with sound, conducting audio through a permeable glass barrier separating the control room and the live room.
“The idea felt pregnant with theatrical possibility,” says director Daniel Aukin , who was approached by Adjmi in 2014 and signed on even before there was a script.
For much of the three-hour show, the band members are sequestered with their instruments in the soundproof, fishbowl-like live room upstage. On the other side of the glass, the studio engineers man a mixing console that controls the flow of audio. Sometimes the engineers sever the sound from the live room so the musicians can’t hear their gossipy banter. Other times the audience is shut out of the band’s conversations behind the glass.
“What’s terrifying about this play is that until we got into Playwrights, we didn’t know if it would work,” Rumery adds. “The rehearsal process didn’t remotely reflect what the performance process would be.”
Starring Sarah Pidgeon, Chris Stack, Tom Pecinka, Juliana Canfield, Will Brill, Andrew R. Butler and Eli Gelb, the play demands more than just chemistry between its featured players. The actors had to develop the musical chops and roots-rock harmony to sell Will Butler ’s songs — which accelerate the story and heighten the emotion throughout — as well as execute carefully choreographed mess-ups and do-overs to be convincing as sparring, coke-snorting bandmates.
Butler, a Grammy-winning artist and former member of Arcade Fire, helped the actors become a band by persuading them to open for him in Brooklyn last fall. “They’ve seen shows, but they’ve never stood onstage and felt the power that comes from you,” he says. “We got to layer in some of that history for them.”
And while the play will inevitably draw comparison to Fleetwood Mac and the tumultuous creation of “Rumours,” Adjmi is bemused by the urge to find the “real” story in a fictional play.
“I keep getting the question, ‘Is this Fleetwood Mac? Is it this and that?’ Why do people want to know that?” he asks. “There is no real story. The whole thing is invented.”
With its classic rock soundtrack and California chill, “Stereophonic” has an immersive hangout vibe accentuated by hyper-naturalistic dialogue. Characters are constantly talking over each other in a way that feels spontaneous, but the script — filled with interruptive double-slashes and written in two columns demarcating the separate rooms — is anything but. “Timing is everything,” Adjmi writes in an introductory note. “Nothing is arbitrary.”
“My writing is extremely exacting to a degree that is sort of unnatural in American theater,” Adjmi says. “And I’m a little embarrassed by it because I don’t know why I demand so much from everybody.”
Yet Aukin offsets the writer’s tight grip on the words with a sense of freedom and flexibility. “The push-pull between us really served the play and created a combustible, interesting energy,” says Adjmi.
At a tech rehearsal just days before the show opened previews, Aukin is still completely reshaping scenes and tweaking dialogue, as Adjmi watches nervously from the orchestra. “Let’s do it badly a few times,” Aukin tells the actors while toying with Act II. “We’re gonna find it.”
Five rows back, Adjmi whispers, “This is all new. … It’s terrifying.”
Even after the show opens previews on Broadway, Aukin is still tinkering. “Sometimes you have things that felt absolutely necessary, and then you go, ‘Maybe that was just scaffolding,’” he says.
“Because of the savagery of parts of this play, we talked very openly about having very clear lines of communication among everyone,” Aukin says.
Adjmi is more candid.
“Sometimes people feel like I am pushing them to a degree that is not quite human, and I think they’re right,” he says. “I know that I have to let go, and I will let go. But my job as an artist is to try to get it as close as I can to what I want and then let go, because it’s never going to be exactly the way I want.”
Having reached Broadway more than a decade after his airborne flash of inspiration, could Adjmi finally be satisfied?
“I definitely appreciate what’s happening right now, and I feel awestruck by the whole thing,” he says. “But I am not somebody who is ever going to be happy with anything I do. I am relentless with myself, and I have to be that way.”
He takes a breath. “At the same time, I know I will never achieve perfection. It doesn’t exist.”
Five Touchstones for ‘Stereophonic’
Metallica: Adjmi watched thousands of hours of documentary footage while writing “Stereophonic” and was fascinated by 2004’s “Metallica: Some Kind of Monster,” which follows the band as the musicians work out their issues with a group therapist. So much so that he even borrowed a couple lines of dialogue for “Stereophonic.”
The Beatles: Butler cites the Beatles as foundational for both his own music and his “Stereophonic” soundtrack, while Adjmi pored over diary entries and studio notes from producer George Martin to get into the nitty-gritty of recording an album. Though the play’s setting and conversational patter evoke “The Beatles: Get Back,” Adjmi says he avoided watching Peter Jackson’s 2021 documentary: “People kept saying, ‘It’s just like your play!’ and I was like, ‘I don’t want to watch it because I’m going to have an anxiety attack because my play is probably never going to happen because of this pandemic!’”
Robert Altman and Maurice Pialat : Two filmmakers inspired Aukin’s approach to “Stereophonic.” “It’s like if you took a Robert Altman movie and transcribed the text, including where and how people overlap speaking,” he says, referring to Altman’s 1975 musical dramedy “Nashville.” Of French director Pialat, Aukin says, “There is something so bracingly present and raw about a number of his films. He works a lot with actors and nonactors, often in the same scene, and achieves a really rare and unusual quality.”
“Sound City”: David Zinn didn’t know squat about sound when he was tasked with building a set designed around a mixing console. So he turned to Dave Grohl’s 2013 film “Sound City,” a history of the famed recording studio in Van Nuys. “Dave Grohl made this great documentary about the Neve board he bought,” Zinn says. “And I just studied that.” Next he had to convince someone to loan the production a “$500,000 piece of equipment to sit onstage.”
