Kuoni India to exit the tour operating businesses

In its new setup, kuoni group will be structured into three divisions, global travel distribution, global travel services and vfs global.

Mumbai: Kuoni Travel India (Pvt) Ltd , part of Switzerland’s Kuoni Group , has decided to sell its tour operating business and focus on its core business of corporate travel, as part of a global restructuring.

The decision follows a strategic decision by the Kuoni board and its group executive board to focus the firm’s activities on its core business as a service provider to the global travel industry and governments. The group will now have three divisions: global travel distribution, global travel services and VFS Global.

It is not clear if Kuoni will maintain inbound travel business as it is closing tour operating business in many key international markets.

A leading travel consultant, requesting anonymity, said top travel and tour operating companies in India are expected to bid for the unit.

“Besides leading Indian tour operating companies, some companies from Japan also have sent out feelers to the company for buying out the tour operating business of Kuoni," he said. He did not name the interested companies.

Leading travel firms based in India include Cox and Kings Ltd , Thomas Cook (India) Ltd and Kesari Tours Pvt. Ltd .

When contacted, Kuoni India officials did not offer specific comments on the Indian business road map.

Kuoni Group said it ranks among the top five tour operators in Europe and has a well-established presence in Hong Kong and India. “In spite of this position, Kuoni’s outbound business faces increasing challenges from changing market conditions. In consideration of the fundamental changes in the industry and the unique position of Kuoni Group as a leading service provider to the global travel industry, the board of directors and group executive board have decided to focus the company’s resources on those core activities in which Kuoni already enjoys a leading market position with attractive prospects," the group said.

This exit from the tour operating business includes Kuoni Switzerland, UK, Benelux, Hong Kong/China and India as well as operations in Scandinavia/Finland, it said. A total of 3,800 staffers work for the unit across all countries. The firm did not give India-specific numbers. Kuoni said it will seek assurance from bidders about the continuati on of the existing business locations and the continued employment of staff.

Kuoni said the exit will not have any impact on customers or their current and future bookings, adding it intends to find new owners in the course of 2015. “These (three) core businesses benefit from leading global positions and exposure to high growth markets. They already represent around 60% of Kuoni’s current consolidated turnover. Kuoni’s position as a unique service provider with a strong focus on Asia offers attractive opportunities to further drive growth and profitability by leveraging the Group’s scale, exploiting cross-selling opportunities and developing more new business," Kuoni Group said in a statement.

“Kuoni is convinced that the outbound business can be better developed under new ownership, potentially leveraging scale and specific local strengths. This will only further benefit the business, its customers, employees and other stakeholders," it said.

“All outbound units for divesture business will continue to deliver expert services to customers at accustomed quality and reliability."
