Viking Octantis cruise ship makes port in Detroit ahead of first season in Great Lakes

‘can a cruise ship fit on the great lakes’.

Megan Woods , Reporter

DETROIT – It’s something you don’t see every day -- a cruise ship along the Detroit riverfront.

The ship is the largest and most modern expedition ship in the Great Lakes. For the first time, the Viking Octanist made port for the day in Detroit, allowing passengers a chance to check out the city.

In the meantime, locals stopped by to get a glimpse of the giant cruise ship.

Viking Octantis goes from Toronto to Milwaukee. People like Bryce Harden couldn’t wait for the inaugural voyage.

“I read about it a month and a half ago. I heard that there was supposed to be like big barges that can like go around the Michigan waterways and get to the cities now and to have something that can carry passengers, that means big money for Detroit. So I’m excited about it,” said Harden.

He wasn’t the only one, several people pulled over to take pictures in disbelief.

Matthew Boddy said, “We thought, ‘We’d love to do a cruise but can a cruise ship fit on the Great Lakes?’”

Gaby Boddy said, “I said it’s impossible. Where are they gonna park it and does it go under the Ambassador Bridge? So I said, ‘We need to go see.’”

Michael and Pamela Caldwell drove 60 miles to see it.

“It’s awesome. I’ve never seen nothing like this before. I don’t know if we ever will again except on TV,” Pamela Caldwell said.

The ship left for Alpena early in the afternoon and from there will go to Mackinac Island.

Viking plans to have several cruises in the coming months as well as add another ship for Great Lakes voyages.

The Viking will be joined by an identical sister ship, the Viking Polaris, in 2023.

Capturing Skylines: The Best Views of Detroit and Windsor Aboard Detroit Princess

Nestled along the shores of the Detroit River, the Detroit Princess Riverboat offers a relaxing and picturesque way to experience the beauty of the Motor City.

In operation through the spring, summer, and fall, this iconic riverboat invites locals and visitors alike to embark on daytime and evening cruises that promise stunning views, delectable dining, live entertainment, and a glimpse into Detroit's rich heritage. While you might have spotted this majestic vessel cruising gracefully along the river or moored at the Detroit International RiverWalk, you'll truly grasp its massive scale when you stand in its presence.

Top Sights Aboard the Detroit Princess Riverboat

As soon as you get on the water and begin your cruise past Belle Isle and further down the river towards Lake St. Clair, you'll see why the Detroit Princess is a must-do for anyone with an affinity for the Motor City! Here’s a sneak peek of the quintessential Detroit views that await you on your cruise:

1. Detroit City Skyline

As the boat pushes off the riverbank, a captivating panorama of the iconic Detroit skyline unfolds before your eyes. The towering skyscrapers, including the renowned Renaissance Center, create a striking contrast against the open sky and shimmering water. Be sure to return in different seasons to witness the high-rises framed by ever-changing greenery.

2. Stunning Sunsets

Evening cruises along the Detroit River are known for their breathtaking sunsets and there's no better vantage point to witness them than from high up on the decks of the Detroit Princess Riverboat. As the sun gracefully dips below the horizon, it bathes the city in warm, glowing hues of orange and pink, conjuring a truly enchanting atmosphere.

3. Detroit International RiverWalk

The Detroit International RiverWalk is a picturesque promenade that traces the riverbanks. From the riverboat's vantage point, you'll enjoy an unobstructed view of this scenic pathway, which is perfect for a leisurely stroll, invigorating run, or delightful bike ride. Along the RiverWalk, you'll find parks, plazas, and open green spaces that promise year-round enjoyment.

4. Ambassador Bridge

The Ambassador Bridge, connecting Detroit to Windsor, Canada, is an engineering marvel. As you cruise beneath this iconic suspension bridge, you'll gain a new appreciation for the international connections that Detroit fosters while getting the opportunity to see two countries simultaneously.

5. Detroit River

The river itself is a sight to behold. This bustling waterway is often filled with freighters, pleasure boats, and kayakers enjoying an aquatic escape. The captivating river activity adds an extra layer of excitement, and people-watching opportunities, to your cruise.

A Look into the History of the Detroit Princess Riverboat

For nearly a century, the Boblo Boats SS Ste. Claire and SS Columbia played host to Detroiters on the river. In 1991, they were sold, leaving behind a void that the beloved Detroit Princess Riverboat eventually filled. Built in 1993 in Louisiana, this majestic vessel boasts a fascinating past as a floating casino known as the "Players Riverboat Casino II." In 2004, the boat embarked on a remarkable voyage to its new home in Detroit. Due to its size, navigating the Mississippi River was impossible, requiring it to be towed around Florida, through the inter-coastal waterway, and across the St. Lawrence Seaway to reach the Great Lakes. After a transformative overhaul, the boat was rechristened as the Detroit Princess Riverboat, heralding a new era of elegance and entertainment on the Detroit River.

A Stunning Backdrop for Events

The Detroit Princess Riverboat isn't just about sightseeing; it's also a versatile venue for events of all sizes. Whether you're planning a wedding , anniversary dinner, corporate gathering , or birthday celebration, the space serves as an unforgettable backdrop for creating lasting memories. Imagine exchanging vows as the sun dips behind the skyline or hosting a corporate dinner framed by the majestic Ambassador Bridge – the possibilities are endless.

Frequently Asked Question

On June 28, 2011 we went live with our new version of the map, this has been in development since 2008 and incorporates many new features that were requested. We are still making a few updates that should be complete in late July.

We are updating this documentation to reflect the changes, please check back for updates.

If you would like to use the old map please visit http://ais.boatnerd.com/v1

The Automatic Identification System (AIS) is a radio-based system used by ships and vessel traffic services to track the location of ships. Its primary purpose is collision avoidance. AIS uses digital radio signals transmitted over VHF maritime channels 87B (161.975 MHz) and 88B (162.025 MHz) to broadcast information about a ship including its name, position, speed, course, dimensions, destination, and status. The use of AIS is mandated for international ships over 300 gross tons under the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). US and Canadian laws require its eventual use on the Great Lakes for ships over a certain tonnage. Some vessels, such as ferries operating on a constant route, are exempted.

Anyone with a marine radio that can monitor channels 87B or 88B can pick up AIS transmissions. However they are digital signals that must be decoded for a human to understand them. Inexpensive software packages are available to do this decoding, as well as more advanced navigation devices. While AIS can provide a simple text output, it is typically combined with some sort of electronic mapping or charting program. This page uses base maps provided by Google Maps with data pulled from a custom database. As radio signals, AIS transmissions have a limited range. This site extends the coverage range by linking multiple radio receivers through the Internet and combining all received AIS information onto one map.

The data shown on these maps is a few minutes up to an hour old depending on the station and delay in updates. AIS requires speed, position and course information to be broadcast every 2 to 10 seconds while underway and every 3 minutes while docked. Other information, such as ship size and destination, is to be broadcast every 6 minutes. This site itself refreshes every 10 minutes, so information could be perhaps 15 minutes or older at times.

Each ship is shown by an icon. The pointed end of the icon shows the rough direction of travel. There is a "tail" behind the ship showing its course over the past 10 minutes. The ships name is shown next to the icon.

By double clicking on the icon (not on the name box), a supplementary box shows up listing the: ship name, MMSI, ship type, latitude and longitude, speed, course, heading dimensions and status. Note that all this information is supplied by the vessel or personnel on board. We cannot correct spelling errors or incorrect data coming from a ship's transmitter.

  • MMSI is the ships Maritime Mobile Service Identity, a nine digit unique identifier.
  • Latitude and Longitude are shown in decimal degrees.
  • Speed is over ground speed in knots
  • Course is the actual direction being traveled at the last reporting time.
  • Heading is the intended direction of travel.

If you would like to host a receiver please e-mail , all that is needed is a location near the water with an always -on Internet connection (like cable or DSL) where we can place an antenna and small receiver box. There is no cost for the equipment that we will maintain, the box uses minimal bandwidth and does not open any security holes. If you are using an AIS plotting software you can upload directly to our database via TCP/IP or UDP/IP upload, please e-mail for instructions.

No. Vessels under a certain size do not have to have AIS transmitters. Not all ferries who travel a constant route, regardless of size carry a transmitter.

Vessels that are laid up or are inactive do not always transmit an AIS signal. In addition, AIS transmissions, like all radio signals, have a variable range depending on transmission power and atmospheric condition. Finally, the current coverage is limited due to the current number of active receivers. Great Lakes & Seaway Shipping Online's volunteer staff is working diligently to provide the best coverage possible within the constraints of its limited non-profit budget.

The Map Tiles used as a base map for this page do not show water depths, aids to navigation, or any of the other features that set navigation charts apart from maps. While it should be obvious, it must be stated: Do not use these maps for navigation purposes. Not only are they not charts, they are not always completely up to date maps or images and will show land where there is actual a channel. For the most accurate view change the map type to satellite. We are working on a version that will display nautical charts.

When viewing the satellite or map view and a small scale (zoomed out), the icon or name label of one ship will often block the view of another icon or name label. Simply zoom in on that location using the zoom slider and position keys on the left side of the screen. At larger scales the labels won't overlap unless the ships are right next to each other. If that is the case, double click on the ship icons to get more detail, including the ships name.

Dimensions are entered by the vessel in meters, our system converts these to feet. If the dimensions were not entered correctly by the vessel it will not convert correctly.

Vessel type (freighter, tug, passenger, etc.) are enter by the vessel when they configure the AIS system, if they entered the wrong information it will dispaly incorrectly. We are updating the system so we can manually define the type for better sorting.

When using either the satellite or map view at a large scale (zoomed in), the ship icon will appear to be on land. The maps, the satellite photos have a certain range or degree of accuracy. The accuracy of a graphical AIS display can only be as good as the combined accuracy of its mapping and equipment components. So docked ships sometimes appear to be on dry land next to the dock instead of in the water. If a ship shows up miles from the nearest lake, it is likely a problem with its AIS transmitter or the electronic navigation system it might be linked to.

When using the satellite view, photos of actual ships appear in certain locations. These are ships that were there when the photo was taken, which may have been several years ago. Do not confuse these photographed ships with the AIS location icons.

Great Lakes & Seaway Shipping Online, the non-profit support organization for the Boatnerd website, has committed a substantial portion of its operating budget to develop this online system. The vast majority of the labor involved was provided by volunteers, but there are substantial equipment and operating costs. Please consider purchasing raffle tickets as a way to support this free service or hosting a receiver. http://www.boatnerd.com/trips/bn/

cruise ship on detroit river today

(WXYZ) — A brand-new cruise ship docked in Detroit on Tuesday morning as part of an inaugural Great Lakes cruise with Viking Cruises.

Chopper 7 caught the all-new Viking Octantis docked at the Nicholson Terminal on Tuesday morning.

The ship is a Polar Class 6 and is a brand-new expedition ship built to explore remote destinations.

Viking offers several Great Lakes cruises, with the longest lasting 15 days going from Toronto, Ontario to Duluth, Minn.

That cruise hits all five Great Lakes, going from Lake Ontario, through the Welland Canal into Lake Erie, up the Detroit River and through Lake St. Clair and Lake Huron, under the Mackinac Bridge into Lake Michigan, back through the Soo Locks and into Lake Superior.

The ship is 665 feet long and holds only 378 guests. It has five decks with state rooms, restaurants, a fitness center, spa, hair salon, cafe and more.

Detroit port sees cruise ship surge, but dock challenge looms

cruise ship on detroit river today

Detroit — The city is fast becoming a cruise line tourist attraction with what is expected to be its biggest year yet following the coronavirus pandemic, but there is a looming threat that operators of larger vessels may not stop downtown due to the dock's size.

The Viking Cruise line came through the Motor City earlier this month but skipped the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority dock near the Renaissance Center — likely, experts said, because the Octantis is 650-plus feet compared with over 240 feet for the downtown dock. Instead, the huge cruise ship settled into the Port of Detroit's privately run 3,400-foot cargo dock space that is operated by Nicholson Terminal & Dock Co., which is near the Ambassador Bridge about three miles from downtown.

Despite the loss of the large cruise ship from the Viking company, which hasn't explained to the port authority why it didn't stop at the Carl M. Levin Public Dock and Terminal, port officials said they will still see an uptick to more than 40 cruise-ship dockings this summer, up from 21 stops in 2019.

Port officials expect the growth of cruise visits to the $22 million public dock, which was built and opened in 2011 to attract cruise ships, to generate more consumer spending in Detroit. But if large ships dock elsewhere along the riverfront, it will pose a challenge because the downtown risks losing spending by those cruise tourists.

The Octantis likely didn't stop at the public dock because of the dock's size ,  said Aaron Bensinger, who works for Chicago-based Central Marine Logistics, an agency for ships that travel on the Great Lakes.

The publicly funded Detroit dock "was built with the smaller vessels in mind," Bensinger said. Discussions about a second public dock downtown stalled some years ago, he said.

"It isn't that the dock has gotten too small. It's that the vessels — Viking, prime example — have gotten too big," Bensinger said.

The newly minted Viking ship is the largest cruise ship to traverse the Great Lakes and access Detroit through the Detroit River, but port authority officials say they won't have a problem continuing to attract other cruise lines, which have smaller ships for which the downtown dock was constructed.

"This is the first time they've brought this ship into the Great Lakes, and it's not a traditional Great Lakes cruise ship. They designed this ship to go to Antarctica," said Kyle Burleson, the port authority operations manager, of the Octantis. "Our facility isn't designed for a ship the size of Viking's. Now that we understand they'll be calling at the cargo port, we're going to work with them to ensure that we make the improvements we need if we can."

Initially, the Viking ship was supposed to stop in Detroit at least seven times this year, Burleson said. He's unsure why the captain chose not to dock downtown because he hasn't received a response. Viking officials didn't respond to repeated requests for comment from The Detroit News.

If the port authority decides it wants larger ships to dock downtown, Burleson said, "we'll need to expand our dock or establish a new one somewhere, and those are two very expensive things that will take some time to figure out."

Cruise line experts said it's up to the ship's captain to decide to use a dock or not. Expanding the Levin Terminal will be a challenge because it would affect property owners along the riverfront, including the public boardwalk.

Viking officials contacted the authority prior to their arrival asking about the depth of the water in the area of the dock, but didn't hear back after the information was relayed, said Mark Schrupp, the executive director of the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority. Schrupp said he knew of no other cruise ship that has stopped at the cargo dock.

"If more ships are coming and if bigger ships are coming, we want to make sure that Detroit's one of the destinations because it puts money into the economy," Schrupp said. "We have a lot of things that travelers from around the world want to see."

How cruise traffic has grown

The COVID-19 pandemic grounded cruise traffic to a halt for two straight years after a slow but steady uptick of cruise lines coming into Detroit.

From 2014-16, no cruise ships visited the downtown dock during the port authority's fiscal years that run from Oct. 1 through Sept. 30 as Detroit exited from the nation's largest municipal bankruptcy.

Then in 2017, there were 17 stops at the Detroit dock, which grew to 21 stops by 2019.

Five ships visited during fiscal year 2020 and none last year, according to port authority records, before the scheduled visits ramped up this year.

"People want to come visit Detroit. There's a lot of good things happening in the city, and we're one of the most popular destinations," said Schrupp, referring to both Michigan and the Great Lakes region. "And people are coming here to see the cultural exhibits, they're going downtown, they're spending money, so it's economic development."

Passengers spend an estimated $150 per person in the city when cruise ships dock in Detroit, he said. So a 200-passenger ship would result in $30,000 in spending in the city.

"We're working to increase that," Schrupp said. "We want more people to come in and have a great experience in the city."

Burleson said coastal cruise ships, luxury dinner cruises, tall ships and traditional cruise ships will use the Port Authority dock this year.

The publicly funded $22 million public dock and terminal building along the Detroit River were built more than a decade ago to attract cruise ships. There are options to expand the dock by seeking permission from other property owners to use their land, according to Schrupp and Burleson. Meanwhile, Port Authority officials expect ship traffic from smaller vessels to keep growing.

The view from one ship

This month, the Ocean Navigator, a 320-foot, 220-passenger vessel docked at the Levin terminal and allowed its passengers to take excursions in Detroit.

Among them were Jay and Barbara Lindsey, who said they always wanted to visit this city. So when it came time to take a ship cruise that started in Toronto and passed through Motown, the Fort Worth, Texas, couple were all in for the ride.

"We were UAW members for 40 years, and it's great to come to the Motor City," said Jay, 75, who sat on the ship's deck in the shadow of the Renaissance Center with his wife, also 75. "It's great to be able to cruise again."

About Detroit and their daylong tour, he said, "it's beautiful. I heard it was declining, but it looks like it's still beautiful to me."

There are eight cruise-ship lines in the Great Lakes this year, according to port authority officials.

"There's a lot of activity going on down here. It's incredible. It's record-setting, and we're going to be running around with our hair on fire making sure it works, but it's going to work," Burleson said. "Detroit is always a top three favorite destination for passengers. Mackinac Island's a favorite, too, so Michigan should be pretty proud of that."

Bensinger said cruising on the Great Lakes and into cities like Detroit was on the upswing until  the pandemic stalled it. But now it's roaring back, and Detroit should benefit from that growth and interest, he said.

"Detroit is an attractive city. It is a prime stop," Bensinger said. "That pier down there right in downtown has made it an attractive city."

Detroit could use more and larger docks for ships to port at, Bensinger said, and it's a problem for other cities such as Cleveland, Milwaukee and Chicago.

Gary Kerr, the captain of the Ocean Navigator, said he loves coming to the Levin dock, calling it "a nice port" and that the passengers "really love" going into the city to explore.

"Detroit sells itself. They know what they're getting when they come here," Kerr said.

Kerr said he's had no issues navigating his ships into the Detroit dock but didn't want to answer for "other ships" like Viking Octantis.

Meanwhile, Barbara Lindsey and her husband said the tours of Detroit were great and the sights of downtown from the ship's deck were outstanding.

"We always wanted to come to Detroit, and we figured on the cruise would be the best way to come," she said. "And we enjoyed it."

Norovirus: Nearly 200 sick in outbreaks on Princess, Royal Caribbean ships, CDC says

Nearly 200 passengers on U.S. cruise ships suffered from diarrhea and vomiting in norovirus outbreaks in April, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The CDC reported that 94 of the 2,532 (3.71%) passengers on Princess Cruises’ Sapphire Princess ship reported getting sick during its current voyage. The 32-day, roundtrip cruise began on April 5 and ends on May 7, according to the cruise tracking and information site CruiseMapper .

Another 20 of the 1,066 crew members on board also reported getting sick, the CDC said.

Cruise ship rescued 14 stranded at sea for over a week

This was the scene from the lunch buffet during the first full day of cruising for the Icon of the Seas. The crew rescued all 14 from the distressed boat which was dwarfed by the largest cruise ship in the world.

On Royal Caribbean’s Radiance of the Seas ship, 67 of the 1,993 (3.36%) total passengers on board became ill during a voyage that began on April 8 and ended on April 22, according to the agency. Two crew members aboard also got sick.

In both of the norovirus outbreaks, the main symptoms were diarrhea and vomiting, the CDC said.

Princess Cruises told FOX Television Stations that "at the first sign" of an increase in passengers reporting gastrointestinal illnesses, "we immediately initiated additional enhanced sanitization procedures to interrupt the person-to-person spread of this virus."

"Our sanitization program, includes disinfection measures, isolation of ill passengers and communication to passengers about steps they can take to stay well while onboard," the company told FOX Television Stations.

Royal Caribbean International did not immediately return a request for comment, but the CDC said in its notice that the company also took several steps in response to the outbreak – including isolating the sick passengers and crew members and "increased cleaning and disinfection procedures."

Cruise ships expose passengers to high volumes of people and new environments, which can "create the risk for illness from contaminated food, or water or, more commonly, through person-to-person contact," the CDC says.

The agency recommends that anyone feeling sick should report their illness. If it happens before the voyage, travelers can ask their cruise line about any possible alternative cruising options.

Those on board should wash their hands often to prevent illness, as well as get plenty of rest and stay hydrated.

An ultra-luxury cruise line wants to attract wealthy Americans with its all-inclusive 'yachts' — see what the new 128-guest ship will be like

Ultra-luxury cruise line  Emerald Cruises says its third ocean ship will debut in 2026.

The all-inclusive vessel, which Emerald calls a "yacht," would accommodate up to 128 people.

Emerald, known for river cruises, has been investing more in its ocean-based business.

Over the last few years, the mass-market cruise industry's larger-than-life mega-ships — outfitted with loud waterparks and more dining options than you could eat in a week — have dominated the spotlight.

But in the ultra-luxury cruise market, it's been the opposite. The smaller and more exclusive the vessel, the better. So much so that Emerald Cruises' next ocean-based ship, launching in 2026, plans to accommodate no more than 128 travelers.

It's a far cry from Royal Caribbean's new 7,600-guest cruise liner . And the price difference is just as steep: almost $250 per night on Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas versus more than $720 per night on the upcoming ultra-luxury Emerald Kaia.

"When people think of cruising now, they automatically think of these large ships ," Robert Castro, the vice president of marketing for Scenic Group, Emerald's parent company, told Business Insider. "There's a market for that, but we're in a unique position."

If you’re familiar with river cruises, Emerald might ring a bell.

The cruise line, owned by Scenic Group, only offered river cruises for its first nine years.

But lately, its biggest growth and investments have been in oceans, not rivers.

In 2022 and 2023, the Switzerland-based company launched its first two ocean cruise ships, which it calls "yachts." Each accommodates a maximum of 100 guests . And so far, they've been hits, with the cruise line experiencing record-high bookings in 2023.

Yes, the ships look like yachts. And yes, they're marketed as such.

But because Emerald's vessels operate group itineraries, they still technically count as cruise ships, albeit really nice ones.

So instead of paying hundreds of thousands of dollars a week to charter a yacht, as is traditional with these high-end vessels , travelers can spend less than $800 a day for a traditional cruise on said yacht-like ship.

While it's not nearly as exclusive, it sure is a hell of a lot cheaper, "bringing the charter yacht experience to reach for people who would never even imagine," Castro said.

Emerald’s upcoming 393-foot-long, 128-guest Kaia would be perfect for fans of small, high-end ships.

The 64-cabin Emerald Kaia would have a larger guest capacity than its two predecessors but would still be tiny compared to most cruise ships, including some of the most luxurious ones.

Regent Seven Seas' new Grandeur can accommodate 746 guests, while Ritz-Carlton says its next ship will sail up to 448 travelers.

Even Four Season's upcoming vessel — with fares up to $350,000 a week — would have a larger guest capacity of up to 222 people. However, it would be almost 290 feet longer than Emerald Kaia.

Like traditional cruise ships, Kaia would have amenities like a spa, two lounges, and three dining options.

The top deck would also have a cabana and bar-lined pool, one of three swimming holes on the ship.

But unlike its mass-market competitors, Kaia would have an open-air marina that would give travelers direct access to the water.

Water platforms are typically only common on yacht-marketed ships, such as Emerald's, Ritz-Carlton's, and, someday, Four Seasons'.

This means guests on the upcoming Kaia could dip in the Mediterranean, Adriatic, and Aegean seas — as is included in its 2026 and 2027 itineraries — without disembarking the ship.

According to the cruise line, Emerald Kaia's future itineraries include an 11-day sailing from Cyprus to Greece and a 20-day one from Seychelles to Kenya.

Its cheapest itinerary is currently an eight-day roundtrip Seychelles vacation in 2027, starting at $5,055 per person.

As an all-inclusive cruise line, amenities like alcohol, WiFi, and excursions would be included in the base fare. However, unlike all-inclusive competitor Regent Seven Seas , guests must pay for their flights to and from the ship.

To compare, itineraries of the same length on Regent's Seven Seas Grandeur and Ritz-Carlton's Ilma would be $36 cheaper and $120 more expensive, respectively, per day.

But the fares aren't stopping travelers from gravitating toward Emerald. Before it unveiled Kaia, its parent company announced a record number of bookings in January — up 67% compared to its previous record in January 2020.

Castro said about 20% to 35% of its guests are American, typically well-acquainted with luxury travel.

The company's goal has been to increase its number of American customers. So far, it's working and is now "on track to be Emerald's No. 1 market," Castro told BI.

The new vessel is being built at a great time for the cruise line.

Strong demand, compounded by a small fleet of small ships, has led to fewer available cabins for its upcoming summer Mediterranean cruises.

Several of these sailings are now fully reserved. The cheapest remaining fares start at $4,570 per person for an eight-day November sailing from Athens, Greece, to Dubrovnik, Croatia.

It's great news for Emerald as it considers a future with more ocean "yachts." "The sooner we fill the ships, the sooner we start building new ones," Castro said.

Cruise line worker arrested at Port Everglades for child sexual abuse material, feds say

Chris Gothner , Digital Journalist

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A Celebrity Cruises crew member appeared in Fort Lauderdale federal court Tuesday after federal agents said they found child sexual abuse material on his phone after he disembarked at Port Everglades the day prior.

According to court documents released Wednesday, agents searched the phone of Dennis Ofrancia De Leon, 44, a Filipino national, after he got off the Celebrity Reflection Monday.

Recommended Videos

Homeland Security Investigations Special Agent Katherine Leonard wrote in a criminal complaint that a “cursory search” of the device revealed “multiple videos/photographs” depicting child sexual abuse material.

Authorities described videos showing boys and girls being raped or otherwise sexually abused by men or women.

Leonard wrote that De Leon admitted to viewing child sexual abuse material, saying he began receiving it about four years ago through Facebook Messenger and looked at it about “once per month.”

He admitted to viewing content showing victims under the age of 10, the complaint states.

De Leon said he “generally deletes the child pornography he downloads onto his cellphone prior to traveling internationally, but failed to do so on this occasion,” Leonard wrote.

He was taken into custody on federal charges of transportation and possession of child pornography and was being held in the Broward Main Jail on behalf of the U.S. Marshals Service as of Wednesday, according to jail records.

Those records state he’s also being held on an immigration hold.

A spokesperson for Celebrity Cruises told Local 10 News that De Leon was fired following his arrest.
