The best time to cruise the Mediterranean will vary depending on your particular interests and schedule. The main Mediterranean cruise season runs from April through November each year, with June to September the peak months. But with Celebrity you can cruise Europe year round.
July to September is the peak summer season in the Mediterranean, when most Europeans take their summer vacation. April, May, June, later in September, and October are all great months to visit, too. You can sail the Mediterranean with Celebrity right up to November, which is a wonderful time for sightseeing with fewer people around. The best time to head to the far south of the region is from February to April, when the climate is perfect for exploring Israel and Egypt.
What should I pack?
When you’re packing for a Mediterranean cruise, swimwear and beach outfits are essential. You’ll need comfortable shoes for sightseeing, whether this involves walking over uneven cobblestone roads or clambering over the rocky paths of the Acropolis in Athens.
A good sun hat is essential If you want to visit churches, synagogues, and cathedrals we recommend long pants or skirt and a scarf/shawl to cover your shoulders.
If you’re traveling at the beginning or the end of the season, the weather could be cool, so bring cover-ups and a light waterproof jacket.
Throughout the ship, casual resort wear, sundresses, shorts, polos, or button-downs are appropriate, paired with sandals, low heels, and loafers. In main and specialty dining, we ask guests to refrain from wearing swimsuits, see-through coverups or robes, bare feet, tank tops, T-shirts, and baseball caps.
Smart Casual attire is required for entry to main dining, specialty dining, and the Celebrity Theatre. Smart Casual means you look comfortable yet tasteful in a dress, skirt, long pants, or jeans with a stylish top or button-down. Shorts and flip flops are not considered Smart Casual.
Each itinerary features one to two “formal” nights that we call Evening Chic. Evening Chic means you dress to impress, glamorous and sophisticated in your own way, with a cocktail dress, skirt, slacks, or designer jeans, an elegant dress top, or blazer—some guests even pack a tuxedo or gown for onboard photos.
The daily program, delivered to your stateroom and available at the Guest Relations Desk, will be your guide to the correct attire each evening. If you do not wish to participate in Evening Chic, Smart Casual attire is acceptable for dining and attending the theater.
What can I see while I’m there?
From the history-lined canals of Venice to the sun-soaked playgrounds of the French Riviera to the iconic architecture of Spain, our array of award-winning Europe vacations offers something special for every discerning world traveler.
Get up close to historic sites like the ancient Colosseum in Rome, the Acropolis in Athens, and the charming Old City of Dubrovnik. Take stellar photos at the Piazza San Marco in Venice, the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, and the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. See Michelangelo’s remarkable Renaissance artwork on the Sistine Chapel ceiling as you tour Vatican City.
In Portugal, experience the spectacular medieval architecture in Lisbon and taste a variety of Port wines in Porto. Explore our port of call in Italy, Trieste, and its ancient architecture, lively cultural scene, and Venetian-inspired coffeehouses. We’re also returning to Kusadasi, and Istanbul in Turkey.
Some of the most beautiful natural sights you’ll ever see may be the view of the whitewashed buildings and turquoise waters in Santorini or the pastel-colored fishing villages in the Amalfi Coast in Italy.
Where are the best beaches?
The Mediterranean is fringed with dazzlingly beautiful beaches . Here, you’ll find some of the most beautiful stretches of sand in the world, wild dunes, craggy cliffs, rocky coves, and aquamarine shallows on others.
For long sweeps of sand, great watersports, and a lively scene, try Mykonos. If black or red sand intrigues you, head for Santorini. For old-fashioned glamor, visit the beaches around Italy’s Amalfi Coast or the chic beach towns along the French Riviera.
Sardinia arguably has the most beautiful turquoise water. Ibiza is fringed with pretty coves, some sleepy, some with cool beach bars and DJs spinning tunes all afternoon.
What is there for families to do on a Mediterranean cruise?
The Mediterranean is fantastic for families. It’s educational, it brings history to life, the shopping is great, the ice cream unsurpassed, and the beaches superb. Mediterranean cultures love kids, too, and children are welcomed everywhere.
Families can enjoy the Colosseum in Rome, gondola rides in Venice, the old walls of Dubrovnik, and cable cars for stunning city views or off-road buggy experiences. You can also experience Pompeii, the cave houses of Matera, and for soccer fans, Camp Nou stadium in Barcelona.
Should I book tours ahead of time?
If you are traveling in peak season, we recommend you book your Shore Excursions through My Celebrity Cruises as soon as you confirm your sailing as many attractions around the Mediterranean are extremely popular.
Booking a shore excursion with Celebrity also means you’ll be visiting attractions with a professional guide, and on a tour that guarantees to return you to the ship on time.
Whether you're looking for a private, customizable experience, a carefully curated guided tour with a small group, or an unforgettable trip to iconic local landmarks, we have the right option to discover any destination, granting in-depth knowledge, expertise, and a truly extraordinary experience.
Can I get around with English?
Many languages are spoken around the Mediterranean, from Maltese to French, Italian, Spanish, Greek, Turkish, and Hebrew. Most people working in the hospitality industry speak some English.
Do I need a visa?
You will need a passport to travel to the Mediterranean, but the vast majority of countries visited by European cruises do not require a visa. From 2024, Americans, Canadians, and British citizens will be required to register for the new European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) to enter 30 European countries.
This will be easy to apply for, inexpensive, and is simply a pre-authorization system similar to the ESTA that Europeans need to travel to the U.S. and Canada. Once you have the ETIAS, it will be valid for three years. You should make sure you have at least six months before your passport expires, too.

Explore the Mediterranean
Set sail across the Mediterranean for an exceptional luxury cruise holiday, taking in sensational destinations sure to excite and inspire. Each itinerary promises something different, with every region having its own unique characteristics, and all ports of call boasting unbelievable attractions and captivating scenery. You’ll also enjoy exceptional weather, with sunshine on tap wherever you stop. Western Mediterranean cruises allow you to explore a range of wondrous destinations in Spain, France, Italy and Portugal, discovering historic architecture, enriching cultures, phenomenal sights and culinary delicacies. Chart a course for Barcelona to take in the stunning La Sagrada Familia and stroll along La Rambla, or make a stop in Monaco for a taste of the high life. A cruise to Rome offers the chance to experience the iconic Colosseum and awe-inspiring Sistine Chapel, while Lisbon is a popular spot to discover historic castles and cathedrals. The western Mediterranean is also a superb spot for beaches, with the Spanish city of Valencia and the beautiful Balearic Islands offering glorious sandy shorelines and warm turquoise waters. Of course, captivating coastlines can be enjoyed right across the region and the picturesque seafronts of the Eastern Mediterranean are equally appealing. The beaches of Croatia, Malta and Greece are not to be missed, while the island of Santorini offers incredible sea views and world-famous sunsets. A cruise around the eastern Mediterranean also offers much in the way of history, with Athens, Dubrovnik in Croatia, and Istanbul in Turkey, perfect ports of call for discovering fascinating ancient treasures.
Food & Drink
The Mediterranean has a rich culinary tradition, and the European region is a heaven for foodies. Whichever port you sail into, you can be sure to find amazing cuisine that will tantalise your taste buds.
The freshest of seafood can be enjoyed in destinations right across the Mediterranean, with each country putting their own unique spin on the dishes created. Grilled octopus is sure to be on the menu in the restaurants and tavernas of the Greek islands, white paella, created using the fruits of the sea, can be enjoyed in the coastal resorts of Spain.
Meat is also a staple across the Mediterranean and is featured in dishes such as schnitzel in Croatia, tapas in Spain and moussaka in Greece. If pizza and pasta are your thing, then you should definitely include Italy in your ports of call, while any wine connoisseurs are encouraged to add a stop in the south of France to their cruise itinerary.
Best Time To Sail
The best time for a luxury cruise holiday in the Mediterranean depends on your particular travel needs and your preference of activities in the ports of call you wish to visit. The sailing season in the region runs from April to November when the weather is warm and restaurants, shops and attractions, which usually close in the winter, are all open. During this period there are a variety of things that might sway your decision on when to take to the seas. Those hoping to travel during the hottest months of the year, should book their cruise for July or August. This is ideal for families, fitting perfectly with school holidays and a great time to enjoy sun-drenched beach days. Couples seeking a romantic escape without the crowds, may prefer a Mediterranean voyage in June when the weather is still hot. The spring and autumn months are also options if school holidays are not an issue, and can be great times to land fantastic cruise deals for your Mediterranean voyage.
Things To See and Do
Spellbinding sights and unbelievable attractions can be enjoyed all around the Mediterranean, with a variety of world-famous landmarks and breath-taking scenery to discover during every luxury cruise holiday. If spectacular coastal views float your boat, you’re in luck. This incredible region serves up beauty by the bucket load, with Italy’s Amalfi Coast, Dubrovnik in Croatia, and the Greek islands of Mykonos and Santorini of particular note. You’ll also find an array of superb beaches along every stretch of shoreline. The ports of call of the Mediterranean are also home to an array of historic gems. Athens in Greece; Venice, Rome, Naples and Florence in Italy; Barcelona and Valencia in Spain, and Istanbul in Turkey are just a few of the places where you can discover some of the region’s most iconic monuments.
What is the best month to cruise the Mediterranean?
There isn’t necessarily a ‘best’ month to cruise the Mediterranean - it all depends on your preferences. For example, if you don’t mind some hustle and bustle, you might enjoy cruising the Med in the Summer months. However, if you’d prefer a less crowded ship then you might want to opt for April, May, September or October.
Do you need a passport to go on a Mediterranean cruise?
Yes, as with any international travel, a passport is typically required for a Mediterranean cruise.
Is it cold at night on a Mediterranean cruise?
It can be cold at night on a Mediterranean cruise, particularly outside of the summer months. We’d recommend to pack warmer clothing if you’re sailing in the colder months of the year.
How much money should I bring on a Mediterranean cruise?
There isn’t a rule for how much money you should bring on a Mediterranean cruise as it depends on your plans and spending habits. For example, if you’d like to spend money on shore excursions or extras during your Med cruise, you might want to bring some extra money. It’s also worth noting that many elements will be covered as part of your package.
What is the best amount of days for a cruise?
The best amount of days for Mediterranean cruises will depend on you and your preferences. Perhaps you’re only interested in Greek cruises and exploring part of the Aegean, or an Italian cruise that takes you to iconic ports such as Rome. In those cases, you might need less than 7 days. However, if you have more destinations in mind, a 7-10 day cruise may suit you better.
Where do Mediterranean cruises go?
Mediterranean cruise routes can vary depending on your provider, but you’ll typically visit a selection of ports. Popular destinations include Barcelona and Valencia in Spain; Rome, Florence, and Venice in Italy; Athens and Santorini in Greece; Istanbul in Turkey; Dubrovnik in Croatia, and many more. Each Mediterranean cruise itinerary varies so you may well see a combination of the ports we’ve mentioned as well as others.
What is the number 1 cruise port in the Mediterranean?
Whilst there isn’t an official number 1 cruise port in the Mediterranean, there are a number of ports that are considered major embarkation and disembarkation points. Ports that would fall into this category include Athens and Barcelona, amongst others. Venice is also often cited as the ‘cruise capital of the Mediterranean’ for a similar reason as well as the maritime history of the port.
What countries are on an Eastern Mediterranean Cruise?
Eastern Mediterranean cruise destinations can include countries such as Greece, Turkey and Cyprus.
Which cities do you visit on a Mediterranean cruise?
There are a number of cities (as well as beautiful beaches) that you might visit as part of a Mediterranean cruise. Popular cities include Barcelona, Rome, Athens, Istanbul, Venice, Dubrovnik, Naples, Florence, Cannes, Palma de Mallorca, and Santorini.
What ports do you stop in on a Mediterranean cruise?
The ports that ships stop at during a Mediterranean cruise depend on the specific itinerary chosen. However, popular ports often included in Mediterranean cruises are Barcelona, Rome (Civitavecchia), Athens (Piraeus), Istanbul, Venice, Dubrovnik, Naples, Florence (Livorno), Cannes, Palma de Mallorca, Santorini, Mykonos, and Kotor. These ports offer a mix of vibrant cities, picturesque coastal towns, and stunning island destinations to explore during your cruise.

For the first time, we’re spotlighting new cruise ships on Travel + Leisure ’s It List, as these exceptional vessels become more and more like floating resorts — celebrity chefs, crystal chandeliers, and Rolex boutiques included.
Explora Journeys’ Explora I
Paul Brady/Travel + Leisure
It’s not every day a new cruise line arrives. The debut of the remarkable Explora I was a moment years in the making for Explora Journeys , the upstart luxury operator that aims to bring a European sensibility to the world of vacations at sea. So far, the project is a smashing success, thanks to the ship’s low-key vibe, standout food and beverage, and intriguing itineraries that visit in-demand ports in Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Caribbean. My own August 2023 trip on Explora I , from Copenhagen to Hamburg, Germany, included fulfilling visits to places such as Oslo and the town of Stavanger, Norway, a gateway to adventurous hiking with a postcard-perfect Old Town. The ship itself was also a destination, with its abundance of outdoor space — including an alfresco fitness center — and pools at seemingly every turn. The 461 suites, all of them with balconies, are filled with luxurious touches such as Frette linens and robes, heated marble floors, and Dyson hair dryers. But Explora I truly shines when it comes to food: During the week I was aboard, it was impossible to find a bad meal — and I was often astonished at the quality of, in particular, the pasta served in the Emporium Marketplace and the sushi on offer at Sakura, two of the nine restaurants aboard. The most ambitious of them all is Anthology, a rotating-chef concept that has seen a residency from seafood whiz Mario Ulaissi, known for his Michelin three-starred restaurant on Italy's Adriatic coast, and that recently welcomed Emma Bengtsson, from Aquavit , in New York City. Much has been made of Explora I ’s Rolex boutique — the first on any cruise ship — but for my money, the other shops on board were more interesting: The company has tapped family-owned businesses around the world to create capsule collections of resort wear, handbags, fragrances, sunglasses, and beautiful gifts that can’t be found elsewhere. From $2,050 per person for a six-day sailing. Accessible ship. — Paul Brady
Oceania Cruises’ Vista
Nick Tortajada/Courtesy of Oceania Cruises
The new Oceania Vista is in a class of its own; no really, it’s the first in Oceania Cruises ’ new Allura class. Of its 11 bars and restaurants, three are entirely new to the Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings–owned brand — including a high-end cocktail spot called Founders’ Bar, serving 26 intricate drinks that use house-made syrups and top-shelf booze like Whistle Pig and parsley-infused Grey Goose. As Oceania levels up, the cruise line has produced a ship that feels more like a floating resort than the vessels that came before. There’s pickleball; a health-conscious restaurant, Aquamar, serving made-to-order salads and pressed juices; and a coffee shop that looks like one in walking distance of my home in L.A. (marble counters, gold accents, leather bar stools) and pulls an espresso shot of similar quality. Vista has more suites than others in the Oceania fleet, too: There are 14 Oceania Suites (up to 1,200 square feet); eight Vista Suites (up to 1,850 square feet); and three Owner’s Suites with Ralph Lauren Home decor and two massive terraces (2,400 square feet). But the most hotel-like touch? A celebrity chef–driven restaurant, Toscana, where Giada De Laurentiis — the ship’s godmother — supplied two recipes for the menu. As someone who watched a lot of Everyday Italian in the early aughts, I was particularly excited to try her signature, Capri-inspired lemon spaghetti, and lemon-cream sauce with grilled shrimp and capers didn’t disappoint. From $2,499 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — Maya Kachroo-Levine
Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Seven Seas Grandeur
Courtesy of Regent Seven Seas Cruises
Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ sixth ship, the Seven Seas Grandeur , sailed its inaugural season in December, joining sibling ships Seven Seas Explorer and Seven Seas Splendor as the newest member of the luxury fleet. The cruise line is a favorite among T+L readers for its gorgeous ships and all-inclusive pricing that covers unlimited shore excursions, dining at specialty restaurants, and even round-trip airfare. Grandeur lives up to its name thanks to stunning, art-filled spaces designed by cruise ship interior experts Studio Dado: signature restaurant Compass Rose is enchanting with interiors inspired by a fairy-tale forest; the Observation Lounge sparkles with an undulating chandelier and swanky bar; and the $11,000-per-night Regent Suite has a private en suite spa and custom Treesse mini pool. As I boarded Grandeur for the ship’s inaugural sailing, I was mesmerized by the grand staircase and glittering chandelier. And with a maximum capacity of 744 guests, I found it easy to take time to myself in the myriad of quiet spots tucked throughout the ship, whether in the Serene Spa and Wellness area, in the Library, or on the Sports Deck overlooking the ocean. Seven restaurants include specialty steakhouse Prime 7, pan-Asian restaurant Pacific Rim, and breakfast and lunch buffet La Veranda, which refines the cruise buffet experience with daily specials like paella and sushi. Several bars and lounges, a pool and hot tubs, a casino, Broadway-style productions, and cooking classes at the Culinary Arts Kitchen make the ship a destination in itself, though guests will want to take advantage of those included excursions on Caribbean, Central American, North American, and European itineraries, ranging from seven to 16 nights, during the ship’s 2024 season. From $4,669 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — Elizabeth Rhodes
Silversea’s Silver Nova
Courtesy of Silversea Cruises
Carrying 728 passengers, Silver Nova is big for the luxury sector, but boasts a hugely important metric: a capacious passenger space ratio — that is, the number of guests relative to the size of the ship. Simply put, this ship offers more elbow room per passenger than almost any other cruise vessel. Silver Nova is wrapped in glass, with an asymmetrical layout; the funnel is positioned off-center, so is the pool, offering an expansive, uncluttered pool deck. Many features of the brand-new ship recall previous Silversea successes, my favorite of which is the S.A.L.T. (Sea And Land Taste) program, expanded for Silver Nova . S.A.L.T. perks include a gorgeous, sea-facing lab for hands-on culinary lessons (at no additional cost), plus a new concept, the Chef’s Table, where an 11-course menu is prepared for just 24 diners. All facets of the S.A.L.T. ecosystem, including ingredients, a bar, lectures, and shore excursions, are keyed to the region Nova is sailing. While food is a drawing card for Silver Nova , accommodations also received a revamp. Tied to the theme of bringing the outside in, there are brilliant new suites found in the aft starboard corner of the ship, with wraparound balconies revealing a 270-degree view. This is where you can tuck me in when I win the lottery and head off on a world cruise. But until then, Silver Nova will summer in Alaska and spend northern hemisphere winters in Australia and New Zealand, places where top-deck views should prove ceaselessly rewarding. From $3,250 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — David Swanson

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported
B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.
Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.
Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.
Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.
Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.
The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.
Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."
More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.
Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.
The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."
The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.
Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.
On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.
The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.
There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.
