An incredible 6-Day Customized Bird Tour Hosted by Luis Alcivar

Our family of 6 had an incredible 6-night private birding tour with Luis Alcivar that started in San Jorge Eco-Lodge in Quito, then Tandayapa, then Milpe and finally back to Quito. Having Luis with us really enhanced our trip. He is so passionate about birds and never seems to tire of sharing his wealth of knowledge. His patience with us meant so much -- we are new to birding, so we frequently had to ask for identification assistance, many times for the same bird. He was so invested in our family by the end that it was emotional for all of us to say good bye. Beyond his birding expertise, he is a very caring and attentive host. We had several hiccups on our trip -- from missing luggage from the airlines to a family member wandering away from our group. Luis never missed a beat in helping us resolve our issues which he was not obligated to do. With regard to the lodges, we had full run of all three lodges since we were the only guests at all lodges until the end. The Quito eco-lodge is frequently used by guests travelling to the Galapagos, so at the final segment, we did start to see a few more guests. The food and service at all three lodges were amazing. The staff is so helpful and attentive and we felt valued as guests. Our favorite lodge was the Milpe location and we would love to go back and spend a week there. The rooms are beautiful and have very quaint porches with hammocks. We can not say enough great things about the Magic Birding Circuit and the San Jorge Eco Lodges, but most especially about Luis. We will definitely be back.

We were the only ones on this tour. We were picked up early (5.30AM) from our rented appartment by Vicente, a hardworking driver and also a very knowledgeable and helpful birder. We met our local guide Natalie Escobar at Quito San Jose lodge who was also very knowledgeable and an excellent guide for the day. Great birding there, then we were taken to the humming bird feeders at Yanacocha. We were the only birders there and although it was cloudy, photography was excellent. Lunch at Tandayapa San Jose reserve - great viewing platform with feeders and beautiful birds. We did expect to go to a cock of the rock lek but only got a distant view across a valley instead. Natalie and Vicente were tireless at seeking out birds until after 6pm. The journey back to Quito was another couple of hours, a very long, but worthwhile day!

My wife and I took a day tour for photography at Tandayapa. They picked us up at our hotel on time and very early. We were supposed to be a small group of 6 but I guess the others cancelled so it ended being a private tour. Miguel was our guide for the day. He was extremely knowledgeable of the birds and their English names. We stopped a few times to photograph the popular birds: golden headed quetzal, cock of the rock, plated-billed mountain toucan, etc. I took a fall in the slippery rocks pursuing the torrent duck so control your enthusiasm! Fortunately, I did not hurt myself and the rest of the day was spent at Tandayapa taking pictures from their look out area where they have a few feeders. Lunch was very good. In the afternoon Miguel set up the multiflash arrangement and used my Canon Mark IV to shoot hummignbirds. It was a great experience and I learned a lot about birds and photography. I strongly recommend this tour.

I was booked on a group 12 day bird photo tour with the Magic Birding & Photo Circuit but in the end I was the only one in the group because others cancelled I was told. This then effectively turned into a private tour for which I am very lucky indeed. I ended up having George Cruz, the GM as my guide and he definitely is very passionate about the birds. The facilities are mostly fantastic as were the meals, with 4 courses for dinner & sometimes for lunch. Breakfasts were good and were timed specifically to coincide with various departure times each day, even those at 5 or 5:30 am, or later if we had an early start & came back for it! There was no lack of food ever. My favorite facility was at Tandayapa & Stalin (I think) & his wife were fantastic and always around to cater to whatever need arose. The feeders there were well done to attract amazing birds all day long. I spent all of my first afternoon completely happy there in the observation area taking photos. The Quito facility is interesting and quaint with a log fire being lit each night in the rooms that took the chill off until the morning. Milpe was nice but different in that it seemed the regular staff were on holidays so the service (I was the only one there) was nothing even close to that at Tandayapa or Quito, although adequate. The facility in SF de Borja was not owned by MBC and there were a couple of issues that I was unhappy about, although the birds in the area were equally fantastic. I saw all the birds I had on my "absolutely want to see" list plus many many more, and apparently we saw two birds that Dr. Cruz said he had never seen in Ecuador before. Being effectively on a private tour, I never had to jockey for position to get my pictures for which I am very privileged indeed! One past reviewer mentioned that Dr. Cruz was always busy on his phone attending to company business, which he was with me also. For the most part that was not a problem because I was busy taking photos, except on a couple of occasions where I was left waiting to move on to another site. He asked at the start if it was OK for him to bring along his camera equipment, to which I agreed although unfortunately he has a bad habit of looking at and removing photos he doesn't like before moving on, which in some cases wasted time and bothered me quite a bit. Although I was not happy with either aspect, which is why I am only giving 4 stars, I saw it as a trade-off against my "private" tour. I would definitely do this tour again but would rather go to 3 facilities only for 4 days at a time to avoid all the packing, moving and unpacking. I could actually spend a week at Tandayapa it is so amazing! I am already thinking about returning next year.

Having visited the west side of the Andes 4 yrs. ago, we decided to try the east side and the Amazon Basin. Led by Dr. Cruz for 4 days, we saw an interesting array of birds in different habitats. We visited 2 of his newly purchased properties that have great potential and will be prime spots when developed with trails. Lodging in Quito, Baeza, Loretto and Mandi lodge down the Napo River was excellent. Food was exceptional especially when Dr. Cruz's wife was cooking. He was very accommodating. When my camera zoom lens failed to work midway into the first day, he lent me his expensive setup to use for one day. He also helped with digiscoping when the camera was not available. He is a wealth of knowledge on the area, birds, plants, history, etc. When we complained that the Quito accommodations were cold on our arrival, he made sure that the fireplace was roaring when we returned for the last night. He is also sponsoring a clothing drive for the poor in the area and we were privileged to help him deliver some of the clothes that we had transported from our home in the states. The final 3 days in the Amazon basin were led by Julio and Pablo. These two guides complement each other and work very well together. Pablo lived in the area and knew all the hotspots. Don't miss a boat ride at the lagoon (lake) at Limoncocha. Saw so many birds closeup. We thought that the ride down the Napo River was to look for birds, but it was mainly to get to Mandi Lodge and then to the Parrot Leks. These leks are also not to be missed. Wonderful experience! Over 250 birds observed and about 115 lifers!

Just back from a 5 day birding experience. If you are lucky enough to have Geaorge as your guide you are in for a treat. Great knowledge and energy to ensure you see all possible birds. The Eco lodges are good, 2-3 star accomadation. The tour is not for the faint hearted. Lots of early starts, stairs and hills. Well worth the effort.

Day 1 - Otavalo Market

The Otavalo market has a lively poncho square and stands out as one of the most important indigenous markets for its popularity in Ecuador and South America. Otavalo also has a large indigenous population known as Otavalos, who speak Kichwa. On the walk through the Otavalo market, you will discover stalls offering typical food and several places where the Otavaleños sell their handicrafts. For example, hand woven textiles, ponchos, blouses, shirts and alpaca fabrics.

Dia 2 - Quito City Tour

The city of Quito, Ecuador's main capital, is the second highest city with an altitude of 9,350 ft. and the best Historic Center in Latin America, as it is surrounded by hills and volcanoes. Discovering its beautiful architecture and traditions, the city has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1978.

Dia 3 - Cotopaxi National Park

The province of Cotopaxi is located in the Sierra or inter-Andean region, which owes its name to the active volcano and the second highest in the country, with an altitude of 19,347 ft. Temperatures in this region range between 15°C and 4°C. Located about 60 km from the city of Quito, the Cotopaxi National Park is perfect for hiking or enjoying nature on a leisurely stroll. On our trip we will arrive at the José Rivas Refuge, located at 15,958 ft above sea level, and as we descend from the Cotopaxi volcano, we will enjoy a pleasant walk through the Limpiopungo Lagoon. A perfect place to observe the endemic fauna.

Dia 4 - Quilotoa Lagoon

The Quilotoa Lagoon is located in the province of Cotopaxi, just 2 hours and 30 minutes from the Cotopaxi National Park, which makes it unique, is the Caldera inside the Quiltoa Inactive Volcano, with a altitud of 3,914 m ( 13,000 ft) has a diameter of 3.6 km and a depth of 2.5 m. The color of the water is emerald green, as if it were a mirror and is a special attraction for spectacular photos.

Dia 5 - Baños de Agua Santa

Banos de Agua Santa, also known as "Entrance to the Amazon", is a city located on the slopes of the Tungurahua volcano, at an altitude of 1,500 meters above sea level. ( 5.000 ft.) In Banos you can enjoy incredible natural and cultural charms, making it a city that offers a day full of adventures. Being one of the main cities of Ecuador among lovers of adventure sports, the most impressive place is undoubtedly the Devil's Cauldron Waterfall, a true jewel of nature.

Dia 6 - Chimborazo Volcano

We are going to do some trekking on Chimborazo. The ascent will be up to the first refuge, "Hermanos Carrel".

Afterwards, we will take a break and continue to the "Refugio Edward Whymper".

• Altitude: Around 5,000 meters (16,404 feet).

from here we will observe the majestic Chimborazo Volcano. If we still have energy left, we will walk a little more to the Cóndor Cocha lagoon,

These tours lead to much more remote areas of the Cuyabeno Nature Reserve. The tours are more physically demanding with fewer amenities. Paddling time may last up to 6 hours daily. Accommodation varies from campsites along the river to rustic huts to the Magic River Ecolodge. Travelers will be rewarded with a deeper experience of the jungle. Wildlife observations are expected to be more spectacular in these remote areas.

This tour is only available during regular park hours at Disneyland Park.

Cancellations

There is a 24-hour cancellation policy. Full price will be charged and forfeited if Guest cancels within one day or is a no-show for the reservation.

Our main focus is for you take and absurd amount of dreamlike shots of hummingbirds, and other spectacular bird species like tanagers, toucans, and, barbets. through the most popular and modern bird photography techniques. Hummingbirds in-flight photography via multi-flash setup  has become one of the most highly anticipated features of bird photography in Ecuador, which, for good reason, we make sure to include it in all our bird photo tours . We provide full multi-flash equipment and your guide will make sure to set it up for you in the most productive locations. Every hummingbird location that we visit has an specialized area for multi-flash  and another for photography with natural light.

We guarantee to take you to the most relevant and photography-qualified  birds hides and bird feeding stations . In these locations, your guide will assure that your shots come as aesthetically beautiful as possible by setting-up captivating perches for birds to land on.

All our bird photography guides are also professional birders with more than 15 years in the field and they will come equipped with a playback, to conveniently draw birds to easy-to-walk locations and  observation decks .  Every day, there will be optional moderate trail photography  to look-out for harder species.

DIFFICULTY LEVEL & PACE

Our  Bird Photo Tours   are relaxed with an easy level of difficulty. Small amount of  daily walking to the hummingbird feeders, bird feeding stations, and, special hides , where subjects will mostly be between 6 and 12 feet away. Optional moderate trail photography.

Celtics Coach Joe Mazzulla Has Wild Take on Revolving Doors

Mazzulla discussed revolving doors during 'Pardon My Take' interview.

Joe Mazzulla's second year as the head coach of the Boston Celtics has gone well, you might say. Boston led the league with 64 wins and Mazzulla did an excellent job of quickly and effectively incorporating offseason additions Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday into the gameplan. The sophomore head coach is a deserving candidate for NBA Coach of the Year. He also continues to issue endlessly fascinating takes on the world.

Mazzulla is prone to occasionally causing a stir with what he says to the media. During last year's postseason that saw the Celtics bow out in the Eastern Conference finals, the sports world became obsessed with Mazzulla's love of the movie The Town . This year, the object of fascination might end up Mazzulla's view on revolving doors.

Appearing on the Barstool Sports podcast "Pardon My Take," Mazzulla revealed he never uses revolving doors because there is a risk he'll get trapped as part of a wider-ranging discussion about how he goes about his everyday life.

Well, he's not wrong. There is inherently a larger risk factor in using a revolving door rather than a standard door. Nobody wants to get stuck in such a cartoonish situation. I am personally happy to live my life without ever worrying about that, but to each his own.

It is a bit of a silly soundbite, but provides perspective into Mazzulla's coaching. If he's so consistently aware of potential threats that he won't use a revolving door or sit with his back to an entrance, then he is certainly not going to skim the scouting report of the opposing team's 11th man. Constantly considering what might happen is an important part of being a leader. Because if he doesn't do it, who will?

The fact Mazzulla lives like this all the time, not just when he's on the Celtics' sideline, shouldn't come as a surprise. He told everybody in fewer words last season, when he was asked how he balances the risk of getting too intense while still getting his message across to the players in the postseason. Mazzulla's answer ? "It's the playoffs. There's no such thing as too intense."

For Joe Mazzulla, you can eliminate the "playoff" qualifier. It's clear there's never such thing as too intense in his world. Not even when it comes to revolving doors.
