The Ohio Maple Madness Driving Tour:  Maple syrup is Ohio’s first harvest of the year and the sweetest. Sugarhouses across Ohio open their doors and invite visitors to see firsthand how pure maple syrup is made.  The March Maple Madness Driving Tour is a statewide event sponsored by the Ohio Maple Producers Association and Ohio’s syrup makers.

Experienced syrup makers are on hand to answer questions during the free, drive-it-yourself tour.  Some stops are small backyard ventures, while others are large commercial operations. SATURDAY ONLY – A few select Amish sugarhouses are welcoming guests. Maple syrup is made in only a small part of the entire world, and Ohio sits in the heart of that area.  Bring the entire family, dress for the weather with boots and coats, spend a day in Ohio’s beautiful countryside and see how clear, sweet sap from the maple tree becomes golden, delicious maple syrup.

My Ohio Fun

ENJOY OHIO’S MAPLE SEASON AND EVENTS

Each year in February the Ohio maple industry begins the process of tapping area maple trees for their sap. Tapping a tree consists of drilling a small hole in the trunk of a sugar maple and inserting a spout. Then attaching a bucket or plastic tubing to the spout where the sap is collected.

maple tour ohio

The weather plays a big part in the type of maple harvest there will be. Cold freezing nights and warm sunny days help the sap in the trees to thaw. As sap pressure builds up in the tree the sap finds its way out. By tapping the tree, the sap has an outlet. The sap is then boiled to remove the excess water. It takes approximately 40 to 50 gallons of sap to produce one gallon of syrup. Depending on the weather, the maple sugaring season lasts from mid-February through the first part of April.

Hale Farm & Village Maple Festival

This year why not experience Ohio’s maple season. Spend a day watching the smoke rise from the sugar houses, sample various products made from maple sugar, and eat pancakes smothered in 100% PURE OHIO MAPLE golden goodness.

Below is just a sampling of some of the maple syrup events happening around Ohio.

Before you go My Ohio Fun Maple Road Trip notes:

1. Wear appropriate footwear. Boots work great if you are going to be walking the early spring muddy paths. 2. Dress for the weather. 3. Parking may be limited at some of the farm locations. Carpooling is always a good idea when taking the tour. 4. Take cash. Many of the farms/events do no accept credit cards.

2024 Maple Season Summary

Thanks to Les for his take on the 2024 maple season.

If you are an Ohio Maple Syrup Producer, how would you describe your 2024 maple season in one word? Early, different, weird, disappointing, average, surprising, long, short, exhausting, and the list goes on – perhaps even some words that cannot be printed here.  Many local producers experienced the earliest start in the history of their sugarbush.  This was followed by the earliest shutdown in the history of their sugarbush.  Early tappers (NEW YEAR’S DAY!) were the fortunate ones, producing three quarters to a full season crop.  There were some hardcore traditional sugarmakers that like to go by the calendar; it was a one run and done for them.

From a metrological viewpoint, this was as close to a record winter as you can get, and we are not talking about cold.  The climatological Winter – December, January, and February – was the warmest since 1931.  By month, December was the third warmest on record.  January was close to average except for the lack of snowfall.  You need melting snow to keep moisture in the ground, and sap flowing from the trees.  February was one of the warmest on record.  This was all predicted in NOAA’s three month forecast back in December 2023.  If you are a maple producer, it was fairly clear.  You were warned.  Waiting until the first week of February to tap was not a good move, but it was better than waiting until President’s Day or when the Moon was right or because Grandpa always tapped that weekend.  The middle of January saw the only extended cold period, but after that, it was game on.  Those that tapped in early January were ready to harvest the big runs that came at the end of month and into February.  This gave the early birds a running start at an average to above average season.  The downside was low sugar content in the sap.  Despite getting record volumes of early sap, the sap to syrup ratios were dismal.  50-60 to 1 ratios were common and widespread.

This is a very lighthearted overview of a very challenging year.  On the positive side, producers made some very good syrup that did not have quality issues.  Officials at the Geauga County Maple Festival Contest reported, “The overall grade color was darker than last year.  Flavor was decent and was representative of the color.  In a year like this with an abundance of warm weather, you would expect some off-flavor syrup to show up in the contest, but that was not case.”  Thanks to adequate crop being produced in Northern New England, there will be no shortage of maple syrup for US markets.

When you have higher than average seasonal temperatures, it is far more likely that off flavors will appear.  I have noticed that it is not uncommon to make Amber and even Golden syrup with an off flavor at the very end of the season.  The off flavor is the product of sour sap, or possibly buddy sap.  Most off-flavor issues are the result of warm weather leading to a massive buildup of microbes in the sap.  An indication of this quality breakdown is rust colored niter in your filter press that is very hard to filter out. Ignored, conditions will go to slime and end up as ropy syrup.  This is caused by bacteria in the families Bacillus and Micrococcus .

Now comes the real challenge!  How do we prevent the possibility of this poor-quality product from entering the market in a year when a large percentage of producers may be facing a shortage of syrup for their customers?  Do you bottle the syrup and hope no one notices?  After all it may have good color. The rationale of the past was that most customers would not pick up on the off flavor.  After all, they are used to high fructose corn syrup imitations.  The answer is clear – never compromise the quality of the syrup you sell.  Quality should always be the trademark of your maple operation.

In the end, what have we learn?  We added one more year to the string of abnormally warm maple seasons that we have experienced over the last 5 years.  Ohio producers need to be ready to tap earlier than they have in the past.  If you are an experienced maple producer, you know when the time is right.   This means that in 2025, when New Year’s Day rolls around, you may need to cut the party short and head to the woods.  In fact, it is not a bad idea to be ready before Christmas.  This is not a recommendation to tap in December, just an admonition to be ready.

There are no restrictions on the number of guests graduates are allowed to have inside Ohio Stadium. Tickets are not required for guests.

Will there be security?

Ohio State said "heightened security measures will be in effect throughout commencement ceremonies and events" to ensure guest and graduates' safety.

Guests are asked to enter through specific gates at Ohio Stadium to get into the ceremony. They are:

  • Gates 7, 9, 11, 13, 23 and 25 on the West side;
  • Gates 8, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20 and 22 on the East side.

Security measures are similar to attending an Ohio State football game. All items and persons entering the stadium are subject to security screening and inspection via a walk through metal detector and/or a hand wand metal detector.

Prohibited items include:

  • Bags of any type larger than 5-by-8-by-1 inches
  • Noisemaking devices
  • Mace, pepper spray, aerosol cans or similar substances
  • Banners or signs
  • Sticks or poles
  • Weapons or items that mimic weapons including, but not limited to: lighters, matches, firearms (including Concealed Carry Weapon permit holders), fireworks, pocket knives, knives, spiked bracelets, brass knuckles, martial arts weapons, stun guns, squirt guns, super soakers, rope and chains

Guests who need to bring a medical bag should enter through the Press Entrance on the west side of the stadium or the Band Entrance on the east side of the stadium.

Where should I park?

With an estimated 60,000 people attending commencement on Sunday, mixed with construction on Cannon Drive , folks should expect heavy traffic around Ohio Stadium and on campus.

Parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis in the Sisson Hall lots and any of the permit zones around Ag Campus, the Schottenstein Center, or the student residence halls. No permit is required. The Arps, Ohio Union, Neil Avenue and Lane Avenue garages will be available at no charge.

Disability parking  is located in the East Stadium lot on a first-come, first-served basis.

Parking garages are likely to fill up fast, so its encouraged that guests use the West Campus parking lots and take a complimentary shuttle bus to the stadium.

Shuttle buses  will run from West Campus parking lots to the Coffey Road fields beginning at 9:00 a.m. until one hour after the ceremony. The Coffey Road fields are approximately a half-mile or a 10-minute walk, from Ohio Stadium.

Planning to Uber? Guests arriving by a ride-share service  should be dropped off at the Schottenstein Center.  Pickup after the ceremony will be at Neil Avenue and 19th Avenue.

What will Ohio State do if it rains during graduation?

Weather is looking a bit spotty for commencement on Sunday.

The National Weather Service in Wilmington is forecasting a chance of showers and thunderstorms before 8 a.m., a chance of showers between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m., then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 11 a.m. with partly sunny skies a high near 79 degrees. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

Commencement will only be canceled if the ceremony cannot be held in Ohio Stadium due to inclement weather. That's because no indoor facility on campus can accommodate the graduating class and 60,000 guests.

If it is raining or rain is forecast on commencement day, graduates and guests should come prepared with appropriate rain gear. Ponchos, raincoats and something to cover wet bleachers are encouraged. Umbrellas are permitted in Ohio Stadium, but using them during the ceremony is discouraged.

Who is giving the commencement speech?

Chris Pan — a social entrepreneur, musician and inspirational speaker — will be the commencement speaker.

Pan, a 1999 Ohio State graduate, worked for PepsiCo and Facebook before starting his own company, MyIntent. "MyIntent makes bracelets with a customer-chosen word that helps the wearer remember to live intentionally," according to the university.

Pan’s umbrella organization SpiritLab promotes spiritual health and growth through experimentation.

“Chris Pan is an incredible example of taking everything you gain at Ohio State and applying it to find solutions that improve the world after graduation,” said Ohio State President Ted Carter. “As we celebrate commencement, I am confident Chris will inspire our graduates to make their own impact as they begin their journey as lifelong Buckeyes.”

Pan released a draft of his commencement speech to his social media accounts Sunday and asked for feedback.

A draft of the speech shows that he plans to invite everyone to sing parts of “What’s Up?” by 4 Non Blondes and “This Little Light of Mine," and he plans to take his shirt off at one point.

After the musical numbers, Pan transitions to talking about the Hamas-Israel war in Gaza and how to address conflict resolution.

"What I learned is that there is so much pain and trauma in both communities. Pain causes hate and violence. Hurt people hurt people. Healed people help people," according to his draft speech. "When we heal ourselves, we heal the world. World peace starts with inner peace."

Former Ohio State Buckeyes and current Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud is currently in Japan as part of Gridiron Imports' 2024 Asia Tour.

On Saturday, Stroud and Dallas Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons appeared at a Tokyo Giants game to throw out the first pitch.

Jan 20, 2024; Baltimore, MD, USA; Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud (7) runs the ball against

Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

Former MLB pitcher Dallas Braden posted the video on X, with the quote, "This is why baseball is different than ANY other sport. Both Micah Parsons & CJ Stroud are FREAK athletes. Watching them throw a baseball would never tell you that."

Stroud threw first and just missed to the left side of home plate. Parsons went next and bounced the pitch about a foot in front of home plate with an even less impressive throw.

The former Buckeyes quarterback is impressive on the football field when throwing a football, but he seemed uncomfortable with a baseball in his hand.

Parsons is a two-time Pro Bowler and one of the more athletic linebackers and pass rushers in the game, but that elite athleticism didn't translate to the pitcher's mound. Stroud's throwing motion looked anything but natural.

Over three seasons in Columbus , Stroud completed 575 passes for 8,123 yards and 85 touchdowns to just 12 interceptions.

Last season, as a rookie with the Texans, the 22-year-old won the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and was named to the Pro Bowl while completing 319 passes for 4,108 yards and 23 touchdowns to just five interceptions.

Stroud led Houston to an unlikely playoff appearance and the team's first postseason win since 2019.

Local News | Mentor-based Maple Health DPC offers employers affordable healthcare options

Dr. Richard Berry, founder of Maple Health DPC. (Courtesy of The Marshfield Group)

Long waits and costly services form a barrier, even for those supposedly covered.

Mentor-based Maple Health Direct Primary Care has been offering DPC plans for individuals for nearly two years, and now has added plans specifically for employers seeking a DPC option for employees.

“Every year, companies pour massive amounts of money into health and wellness benefits, yet we’re seeing no slowdown in diabetes, obesity or mental health issues,” Maple Health DPC founder Richard Berry said. “It’s time to change the narrative.”

Berry noted that that companies using DPC report enhanced productivity and morale.

According to a news release, many employers are wedged between offering traditional health insurance and the desire to switch to a high-deductible health plan. The absence of employer-sponsored insurance can place companies at a disadvantage in today’s ultra-competitive job market.

The Maple Health DPC model is a membership-based healthcare option that starts at $70 per month. It offers a remedy to the frequent emergency room visits for minor injuries and provides direct communication with a clinician as well as discounted rates on pharmacy and laboratory services that often cost less than insurance co-pays.

“Seventy dollars per month might not get you an insurance policy, but it does secure round-the-clock access to primary care, covering most employee healthcare needs,” Berry said.

Maple DPC’s flat-fee membership opens doors to a full-service primary care facility, with flexible scheduling, longer appointments, reduced waiting times and a deep connection with a healthcare provider.

“Offering unlimited primary care, including on evenings and weekends, can minimize employee absenteeism or paid time off and become a strategic asset,” Berry said.

According to the release, for companies with existing health plans, DPC complements insurance by filling in critical gaps. It guarantees immediate access to primary care, home visits for newborns and extensive appointments — all contributing factors to a healthier, more engaged workforce.

In sectors where health insurance isn’t typically offered like hospitality, agriculture, childcare and personal care, DPC can be a game-changer when it comes to attracting and maintaining high-level staff.

“Increasing wages isn’t the only strategy to attract employees. Access to primary care and affordable prescriptions can be equally, if not more, alluring,” Berry said.

Maple Health DPC’s business membership includes direct contact with clinicians via text, email or phone via HIPAA-approved gateway, prompt appointment scheduling, often same or next day, on-site treatment for injuries and minor conditions, preventing costly ER trips, comprehensive care, including free home visits for newborns, applicability for small groups, starting from two individuals, and monthly on-site visits for organizations with 60 or more employees.

“Maple Health DPC fosters a collaborative environment promoting a healthy workforce and it’s not uncommon for organizations to combine their health insurance policy with DPC services for less than the cost of insurance alone,” Berry explains. “The savings impact the bottom line and expand choices for employees.”
