Metro US: News!

Will there be a ‘Dark Tourist’ season 2? Here’s what David Farrier toldus

David Farrier in Dark Tourist

During our conversation I asked Farrier if there were any plans to take the show into a second season, and while he insisted that the answer is up to Netflix, he did tease that there are many more places for him to visit.

“In researching all of this season we have a full Google doc of places to go and stories to tell. We only had a certain number of episodes and we filled them all up. So there is certainly more to tell and more to do. So we’ll see how this season does and take it from there.”

David Farrier has already taken in numerous locations while shooting “The Dark Tourist,” as he visited Colombia, Mexico, Japan, Kazakhstan, England, Cyprus, Cambodia, Myanmar, South Africa, Benin, and the United States, which he actually visited twice, for the show.

It is hardly a surprise that Farrier is so eager to do a second season of The Dark Tourist, as he previously told me , “I’ve always on my own holidays gravitated away from normal destinations, and I have always liked to go somewhere a bit different.”

There are a number of places that Farrier could frequent in a second season, including the likes of the Catacombs Of Paris and Auschwitz. While death and funeral rites in Bali have already become a tourist trap, as some people allegedly selling tickets and arrange tours as soon as they learn that an individual is on their deathbed.

Dark Tourist Season 2

Dark Tourist Season 2: Netflix’s travel documentary, Dark Tourist, released back in 2018. It bagged mixed reviews. Some viewers found it too dark while some enjoyed it. It has been quite a lot of time since the first season released. The fans of the show want to know what is the fate of the show. Here is all we know-

Dark Tourist Season 2: Who Is In The Cast?

The show is presented by David Farrier, a journalist based on New Zealand. He has been a prominent face in the media of the country. Farrier does some exemplary works in his name that has made him an international face. He started his career on 3News and then started working as an entertainment reporter.

Since this is a travel show, the only fixed cast is its presenter. There are no partners for him as he travels to some of the world’s most dangerous places. Here is an introduction of the person to whom the show’s audience gives almost 7-8 hours of their life. Later on, he understood the profession and took a serious turn. He became a prominent face in mainstream journalism. He started covering all kinds of stories, no matter what acknowledgment he got for them.

Dark Tourist Season 2

Then he started making documentaries. His first words were ‘God Save New Zealand.’ The documentary was based on one of New Zealand’s national anthem. Later on, he moved to television and hosted a few shows. However, then he moved back to documentaries.

If Dark Tourist Season 2 happens, we do not have any doubts that David Farrier wouldn’t come back. It looks like it’s his show and he is the one to manage it.

What Is The Show About?

Whenever one thinks about a tourism place, all they think about the pretty places. However, this show takes a different route. In the show, presenter- David Farrier explores some dark and horrifying places around New Zeland. This is the show that indulges people who are fascinated by destruction and death. That does sound a bit creepy, but that is what the show ‘Dark Tourist’ is all about.

Farrier brings out the dark tourist hidden somewhere inside him out. He travels to places around the world that have some dark tragedies written all over them. He first visits Colombia, and he finds out about Pablo Escobar. After that Farrier travels to Medellin. One of Escobar’s henchmen helps him explore it around. Then he tries to mock run of getting into the USA illegally through Mexico.

Dark Tourist Season 2

After that, he visited Hiroshima and Nagasaki, then the US, where he explored Jeffery Dahmer and Charles Manson’s background. Then he went to New Orleans and explored the vampire and the assassination of JFK. After that, he went to Kazakhstan and explored the Soviet Union’s nuclear weaponry and space programs.

Then David visited Europe, where he participated in a mock war and visited museums dedicated to serial killers. He visited the most violent person in Britain. In many places, David had to face some problems. It looks like some places are not open to anyone. If the second season comes out, we might get to see more dark places and spots.

The first installment of the show released in 2018, and since that, Netflix has not announced anything about Dark Tourist Season 2. We will update you with any news about the show as it comes. So, you stay tuned.

Dark Tourist Season 2 Storyline:

David Ferrier’s first stop is in Medellin, where he looks into and learns about Pablo Escobar’s past. Later, he goes to La Catedral with Popeye, who used to work for Escobar. Then he goes to Mexican City to look around.

There, he needs to meet the supporters of Santa Muerte and sees an exorcism. Then he heads to Tomioka, in which he thinks there will be more radiation. So, he goes to Hiroshima Island, which is in Japan.

He meets Natalie, a dark tourist, in Milwaukee, and they take a tour of the city together. In Kazakhstan, David meets dark tourist Andy, and the two of them go to the city of Kurchatov. They also go to Semipalatinsk Test Site, which was the main place where the Soviet Union tested its nuclear weapons.

He also goes from Kazakhstan to Baikonur, which is where the Soviet space programmed is based. He then goes to Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan. He also goes to the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in 2017.

He also takes part in the biggest World War II reenactment in the world. After that, he goes to England and visits a contentious museum with a display about Fred and Rose West and a Nazi-era lampshade that is said to be made of human skin.

He then flies to Indonesia, where he meets a Toraja man who has been “resting” for two years and also takes part in the Ma’nene funeral rite. He tries to learn more about Voodoo in Ouidah, Benin, and does a ritual for the god Thorn.

Later, he goes to Johannesburg and checks out Alexandra township to see how dangerous places like that are. In South Africa, he meets a small group of Afrikaner nationalists before going even farther north to Randfontein and meeting the Suidlander survivalists.

After seeing these places, he goes back to the United States and ends up in Los Angeles. Where he learns about the murders by the Manson family and meets one of Manson’s friends.

He takes a plane to Kentucky to see a full-size copy of Noah’s Ark. His last stop is a scary house in Tennessee called McCamey Manor. This is the end of his journey, and also the end of the first season.

It was a pretty interesting trip. It was fun to see the places, but it was even more interesting to see how he lived and what the culture was like in each place.

We’ll gain knowledge a great deal about the individuals and ways of life in each place he went. Well, a second season of Dark Tourist would be great if the people who made it come back with it.

5 best shows like 'The Tourist' to watch after season 2

I magine waking up in a hospital room, in Australia, without any identity about who you are and why you are there. That's the premise behind the trending series on Netflix, "The Tourist."

Jamie Dorman stars as the main character, who has no memory of who he is and how he landed in the hospital. A variety of strange, helpful and quirky characters help him along the way. The fantastic blend of mystery, action, and a sprinkling of dark humor has made the show a top choice on Netflix.

Season 1 just became available in the U.S. on the streaming network earlier this year and season 2 just dropped on Feb. 29. When you're done binge-watching, here are some shows like "The Tourist" that offer up the same or similar vibes to fill the void.

Listed as one of the top-rated TV shows by IMDb, this show has endured for five seasons and has received numerous awards and nominations, including six Primetime Emmy wins. The anthology series changes the time period and location for each season, although there is some slight overlap of characters. Each installment focuses on a crime that somehow manages to connect to the city in North Dakota, which the show is named after.

Fans of the movie will recognize it's a spinoff of the famous film. In addition, if you are familiar with Coen brothers movies , you are sure to spot references to their catalog of work through the show.  This is the perfect follow-up to "The Tourist," considering the mystery woven throughout every season and the dark humor throughout. However, there is plenty of violence in the show, so make sure you are prepared for that.

Watch on Hulu

'The Missing'

This show is a no-brainer follow-up to "The Tourist" since it was also written and produced by brothers Harry and Jack Williams. However, "The Missing" has less of a humorous touch than its Australia-set counterpart. Season 1 of the show focuses on a little boy who goes missing and his father's motivation to find him. Season 2 shifts to the mystery of a teen who wanders off campus and gets kidnapped, only to come back with a story of another missing girl.

Much like you see with "Fargo," each season is an anthology where there is very little overlap, and you can easily watch them independently of each other. The main connection is the French investigator, Tchéky Karyo as Julien Baptiste, who investigates both cases.

Watch on Starz

'Three Pines'

If the mystery behind "The Tourist" is what drew you in, you'll love "Three Pines." Based on the novel by Louise Penny, the single-season show centers on Alfred Molina's Chief Inspector Armand Gamache, who is solving perplexing murders in the small Quebec village of Three Pines. The residents aren't exactly happy to see him, but despite that cold reception, he is drawn into the villagers' lives and spots numerous possible suspects, giving the show an intriguing Agatha Christie vibe.

Sadly, despite its positive reviews, it was canceled after the first season because there was disagreement between the production companies. However, it still stands on its own as a miniseries. You'll be pleased to know there is an ongoing request for signatures to renew the show on Change.org if you find yourself enthralled by season one.

Watch on Prime Video

'Mr. Inbetween'

For those enticed by "The Tourist's" Australian setting, you don't want to miss Mr. Inbetween. Scott Ryan's Ray Shoesmith is a charming but violent hitman in Sydney. The mockumentary "The Magician," released in 2005, was about the same character. The show tells Ray's story more seriously and the title points to the ongoing struggle that he faces while balancing his criminal activities with his obligations to friends and family. No surprise, his work takes a toll on his relationships.

There is plenty of crime, romance, and comedy to be found within this series created by our Aussie friends. The series lasted for three seasons, coming to an end simply because Ryan was done playing the character. Considering he played the role in an independent film and a major series, it's no surprise he was done.

'Underbelly'

Another Australian show to add to your streamlining list is "Underbelly." As the title implies, it takes place in the underbelly of the Australian world, focusing on both sides of the law. What really will pull you into this show is each series is based on true-life events.

The first three seasons are based on the book "Leadbelly: Inside Australia's Underworld," while the fourth season is based on the book "Razor" by Larry Writer and the fifth season is on real-life convicted murderer Anthony "Rooster" Perish. The sixth season, set between 1915 and 1927, is about Melbourne gangster Squizzy Taylor. Then, the final season tells the story of gangster Mark Read, otherwise known as Chopper. For crime fans who love a show based on true stories, this one is certain to draw you in and not let you go.

Dark matter episode 2 subtly teases a grim alternate universe from the book.

Every Apple Sci-Fi TV Show, Ranked Worst To Best

17 biggest changes dark matter makes to blake crouch's book, why sauron looks different in the rings of power season 2.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Dark Matter episodes 1 & 2, as well as details from the source material that may spoil elements of the adaptation.

  • Apple TV+ stays true to the multiversal despair of Blake Crouch's Dark Matter in its adaptation.
  • Jason Dessen's tragic exploration through alternate realities sets the tone for Dark Matter .
  • Dark Matter's pivotal virus universe must remain in the show for Jason's story to unfold.

Dark Matter is a multiversal tale that rarely focuses on the positives of the protagonist's situation, as proven by a brief shot from episode 2 that foreshadows Jason Dessen's future adventures through alternate realities. Although Apple TV+ has made some additions and changes to Blake Crouch's original Dark Matter book , the main story in the first two episodes remains the same. However, one of these alterations teases a specific universe from the 2016 sci-fi novel in a way that the source material does not.

As the leader of the Dark Matter cast , Joel Edgerton's Jason Dessen has been torn from his reality by an alternate version of himself. In the book, Jason needs to find his way home, but the process of doing so isn't easy. As a result of his inadvertent exploration, he finds himself in various universes that aren't quite right, and one of them is downright nightmarish. Although Jason has only been in one universe other than his own by the time of Dark Matter episode 2, "Trip of a Lifetime," the show is unlikely to omit the others.

Apple TV+ is known for its incredible original shows, especially in the sci-fi genre. Here is the ranking of every Apple TV+ sci-fi original series.

Amanda's Art Installation In Dark Matter Teases The Deadly Virus Universe From The Book

Dark matter's virus universe is very macabre.

Daniela's art show in Dark Matter exists in the book and the Apple TV+ version of the story . Although the event spans the two mediums, they aren't identical. The installation in the show is much more in keeping with Dark Matter 's multiversal themes but in an unknowingly fitting way. One of the biggest changes is that the trippy labyrinth put together by Jennifer Connelly's Danila Vargas features an image of a crowd of people in hazmat suits, shifting what look like body bags. The piece of art is representative of a parallel world from the source material.

"The front passenger door of the Humvee opens, and a figure in a black biohazard suit and gas mask steps out and sights me down with an assault rifle."

In the Dark Matter book, there is an alternate universe later in the story that looks very much like this image. An unnamed virus has swept through Chicago, with seemingly every case becoming fatal after enough time has passed. Jason is stopped in the street by figures in hazmat suits , and he can do nothing but watch as that universe's Daniela succumbs to the aggressive illness. For those who haven't read the book, the reference in the art exhibition won't mean much, and even for existing fans, it's still easy to miss.

Dark Matter's Virus Universe Is Too Important To Leave Out Of The Show

Jason's time in the virus universe is pivotal to his understanding of the box.

Jason's journey takes him to different realities, many of which are vastly different from his own, whereas others are similar. The Dark Matter TV show may not include all of these different universes , but the one with the fatal virus needs to remain as part of the adaptation. Jason's arrival in the virus universe is a key milestone in his discovery of how to pilot the box that takes him between realities, and witnessing Daniela's death for a second time is one of the story's darkest moments - which is always a key hallmark in a multiverse saga like Dark Matter .

Dark Matter (2024)

Based on his novel of the same name, Dark Matter is a sci-fi drama-thriller television series created for Apple TV+ by Blake Crouch. The series follows a physicist who is kidnapped and thrown into an alternate reality where he witnesses one potential path his life could have taken. However, he learns that the lives of his family are in jeopardy by an alternate version of himself.
