Nike Mercurial Superfly 7 Elite CR7 Safari Review

Before we get into a detailed review of the boots, let’s talk a bit of history. The original version of the Nike CR7 Safari was released 10 years ago in 2010. 

The OG version of the Safari released 10 years ago was Cristiano Ronaldo's first signature boots, and it was on his son’s birthday.

Nike released the new Mercurial Superfly 7 Elite CR7 Safari to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the original release. The beautiful colorway and the history behind the shoe make for a special boot.

I never got the original Safari released 10 years ago, but the colorway of the new release looks the same. Technology has obviously evolved in the last 10 years and a lot of new technology has been implemented into the new Safari.

Look and Feel of the CR7 Safari

The upper of the cleat is beautiful, it's glorious. Just kidding. The upper of the shoe is pretty amazing. I love the colorway. I love the way it looks. It looks amazing. You have the black and white Safari print all around the boot. Even the lace has the Safari print on it just like the original.

The lace was one of the many reason people loved the OG version that was released 10 years ago. Players will take out the lace and put them on their sneakers because the lace design was kind of a new thing at the time.

You also have the orange Nike logo on both sides of the boot. You have the Mercurial call out on the back which is orange, and you have an orange line on the inside around the heal counter

The dynamic fit collar is white, and it has a “Superfly360” callout. The color of the outsole is a combination of opaque and orang material. That is all you get for the look and colorway of the cleats. I really love the colorway. It really brings out the cleats, and you don’t really get to experience that until you have it in your hands.

Upper/Technology of the CR7 Safari

The upper is a 360-degree Flyknit construction that uses high-tenacity yarn which helps give you that sock-like one piece upper fit. It also has a Dynamic Fit collar that wraps your ankle to help give you that secure feel. This is something that was not available on the OG Safari.

The combination of all these new technologies allow you to have a better grip and control on the ball. The cleat also feature Nike’s ACC which enable you to play and control the ball in all weather.

The Upper especially the forefront of the cleat feels very thin. Allowing you to really feel the touch of the ball. This is something I really like because it allows me to feel like I am in control.

Insole/Outsole

The insole of the cleat is removable and there is something pretty unique about it. On one side of the insole you have Cristiano Ronaldo doing his classic celebration, and then on the other you have the CR7 callout with his signature.

The insole dose features the Nike grip technology, which prevents your feet from moving a lot on the inside of the cleat. On the inside you have soft material around the heel area. It also has some holes for breathability.

The integration of Aerotrak zone with micro grooves in the cleat's forefoot and a stiff chassis helps provides supercharged traction. This new technology will help with better sprint and better grip on the field.

It helps provide better push when running with the ball. The cleat features Nike’s angular studs which provide superior traction on short-grass fields.

How It Feels

Let's talk about the way the shoes feel. I love the way the shoes feel on my feet. Just keep in mind that I normally wear size 10 and a half, but I went half a size up on this one, and I always do this for cleats with dynamic fit collars.

Reason being that, one, it is very difficult to put on a cleat with a dynamic fit collar. Two, it is very difficult to take off a cleat with dynamic fit collar, so every time I get a cleat with dynamic fit collar I generally tend to go half a size up.

That is also because cleats nowadays are built to be tight to give you that sock-like feel. So, going a half a size up for me tend to work magic, because it gives my feet a little bit of flexibility to move around.

The cleat is going to require some break in time, but I do not think the break in time is going to be extensive. It is most likely going to take you one or two games to break it in. It felt very comfortable when I tested it, and did not seem as if It will need a lot of time to break it in.

Final Thoughts

I love these cleats. I love the colorway. I love everything about them. The only thing I don't like is the price, but do keep in mind that it's a limited-edition cleat and it has a bit of a backstory to it. So, for the most part, people are going to buy it, keep it, and then resell it for a higher price later because it is a limited-edition cleat.

The Nike Mercurial Vapor CR7 Superfly III offers a lower toe box and slightly softer upper out of the box, making the break-in time significantly shorter. If you were to put a brand new Superfly II on one foot and a brand new Superfly III on the other, you would notice that the upper of the shoe is not as stiff. And that’s not to say that these shoes are not stiff. These, apart from its predecessor, are the stiffest shoes that you can buy and do require a pretty good amount of break-in time. This is not a shoe that you can wear in a game right out of the box because you will get blisters. I had to wear these around the house for around 5 hours before feeling comfortable enough to wear these shoes out on a field. The material will soften up, but not a lot, as the shoe will remain quite stiff. Once they have been broken in though, they are comfortable shoes. The Flywire allows for the tightest, close to your foot feeling that you can’t get from any other synthetic soccer shoes. The carbon fiber sole-plate is also the best base for any shoe, in my opinion, and eliminated all stud pressure, allowing for a good amount of comfort. These shoes are not super narrow and fit more at a normal width, so as long as your foot is not overly wide, you should have no problem wearing these boots. I wore my normal size 9US in these shoes. They fit true to size, so for a tight fit order your normal size.

These shoes are definitely light, but thanks to the Adizero line of shoes, they do not feel as light as you might like them to be. If you wear the Superfly III on one foot and an Adizero Prime on the other, there is no doubt that the Adizeros are significantly lighter. That’s not to say that they are not light shoes. At 7.8oz, these shoes are light, just not to the same level that the Adizeros are.

One of the reasons to go for the Superfly over the lower priced vapor is due to the special Nike sense studs that come on the Superfly. What seemed like a gimmicky thing on paper actually impressed me. I had gone out in softer field conditions, where I would usually slip while wearing firm ground shoes, and found myself having an incredible amount of traction coming from these two studs. I was able to go full pace and change direction without any slippage whatsoever, giving you a great amount of confidence to cut in while sprinting down the sideline. I even tried to slip and just couldn’t do it. If you want the most versatile firm ground stud pattern available, this is it. The only reason that you don’t see many pros using this stud pattern is because they play on soft ground and do require a soft ground stud pattern.

This is an area that felt a little strange for me. The shoe is not very thin. It’s in the middle of super thin and thick where you would want a leather shoe. It’s hard to explain, but I felt like the shoe was an awkward thickness. The upper is also not very soft, so you touch just feels as if you don’t feel the ball as well as you might think you would. All this is not to say that the touch on the shoe is bad, it’s just different compared to other shoe. It took me some getting used to, but in the end was not for me. On the plus side, the Flywire allows for the shoe to fit very close to your foot, so every touch on the boot is going to be clean and exactly where you want it to be. The upper does feel great while dribbling as the ball just seems to touch off of your foot perfectly while dribbling at speed.

This is pretty good in terms of shooting. There is a decent amount of padding that you don’t get from most boots in the “speed” category. You get the feeling that you can place the ball in the corners at will from free kicks, and it does seem easier to perform a dipping shot. I also feel, as with all vapors, that I can bend the ball slightly further than with other shoes. Although this is probably more mental than anything, it is what I experienced. The only thing that I did struggle with was the finish on the shoe in wet conditions. The upper doesn’t provide much grip when striking the ball in the wet, and I found the ball sliding of my foot in my follow through, making for a shot that would go off target.

The build quality of this shoe is very high, as these are the only vapors still made in Italy. Everything is well constructed and just feels really solidly built. The moving Sense stud is the concern of many, but I found it extremely solid and unlikely to break. The only concern for me would be the carbon fiber sole plate, but Nike seems to have improved it dramatically from when it first came out several years ago. These are shoes that you can safely buy to last you an entire season.

This is another plus to the thicker upper of the Superfly III. Because the upper is quite stiff and a little thicker, you will not be in as much pain as in a normal “speed” boot. That’s not to say that these are protective shoes, but for a “speed” boot, this is the safest one out there.

The Verdict

So are these better than the Superfly II? The answer is yes, a little bit. Nike provided an extra lace hole at the top of the boot, which is the reason for the extra Flywire in the heel, a lower toe box and a shorter break-in period. So would I call this a whole new boot? No, this is more a Superfly 2.5 than a Superfly III. If you liked the Superfly II and are looking for some minor improvements, than it is worth the upgrade. You will get a supportive, tight fitting shoe as well as phenomenal traction. It definitely is better than the Vapors and if you have the extra money, it is worth going for the Superfly.

Nike Launch The Mercurial Safari

First!!! They look a lot nicer in the Superfly II than in Vapor’s, but I’ll await giving a complete verdict until I see them on Ronaldo’s feet this weekend.

ive already commented on the vapor vi so i’ll make this short:

the only other thing i like is the laces, imagine them on a different boot, kinda like the nike red laces, it would give so many boots that kick of flare.

The changes to the Vapor/Superfly range have been minimal over the last few years, its a shame that the best they can do is speckle black paint on a white background and open up “A New Range” of equipment.

This is cool. I want these shoes. The tech has been marvelous compared to other shoes in the market. Carbon fiber itself is already amazing to be implemented in such shoes. I have never heard other shoes using carbon fiber in their shoes. Not too hurt other brands but take a look into the efforts they have done and researched to build a cleat with those kinds of out sole. This is only the out sole. Still those patterns. Booommmmmm….

interesting that nike put the adaptive studs on these. while let’s face it: ronaldo isn’t the best adaptive studs supporter out there. ronaldinho and ronaldo (R9) got their specific boots exactly the same as the retail version.

i’ll just wait and see, if ronaldo wears different soleplate at the match. then we all know that nike put the adaptive studs on these so they could sell it for more money (it’s the most delicate type of studs IMHO -ie: most expensive)

Gorky Park (The Central Park of Culture and Leisure) – The main one of the Moscow Parks

In my opinion this park could be called the main park of the city. Why? Because of its huge territory, the central location and the amount of people visiting the park daily.  It was founded in 1928 and in 2011 it was totally reconstructed. Now it pleases visitors with modern objects and soft green lawns.

The Gorky park is a the right choice for everyone! The youth will like a free WiFi, bicycles, skateboards and other rentals; the couples will enjoy spending time near the river, watching a sunset; parents will appreciate colorful playgrounds and a room for mother and child. In recent years, “Museon” has become an important cultural site of the city. The park regularly hold many different concerts, festivals, educational projects in the field of art and design. There is a Central House of the Artist, a comfortable summer cinema and other attractions on territory. Be sure to stroll pedestrian Crimean embankment, which looks like a modern park.

Neskuchny Garden – True Russian Nature is Here

Neskuchny garden is located on the right bank of the Moscow River. Today it is also seen as a part of the Gorky Park. This landscape park is one of the oldest in the city and is protected by the state. Its name was received from the Neskuchnoye Estate of  Prince Trubetskoi which is still located in the park.

This park is famous mostly for its location close to the Gorky park. It is a quite place with true nature, lots of trees and squirrels and also ancient architecture. As in every park, there are sports and playgrounds, cafes and even a football field.

Zaryadye Park – 5 Steps Away From The Red Square

The area of this brand new park was opened only in September 2017 and located in the very heart of Moscow – right near the Red Square.

The park has 4 zones, each of them represent different parts of Russian landscapes. Above the river there is a floating bridge from where you get to see one of the best panoramic views on Moscow. Other attractions of the park are 5D cinema where you can take a flight above Moscow, few cafes and restaurants, pretty lakes with fishes and old preserved churches. In addition there is still being built a  philharmonic hall, covered with a huge dome and an Ice cage where the temperature will always stay below zero degrees.

All-Russia Exhibition Center (VDNKh) – The Soviet Style Moscow Park

Park VDNKh – one of the most famous parks in Moscow. This park is one of the sights of the city as it hasn’t changed much since the Soviet era.

The symbol of VDNKh is a fountain with 16 women symbolizing the friendship of the nations of the USSR. Around this fountain there are all the pavilions representing 16 republics. Now inside the pavilions you find various shops, cafes and exhibitions. If you go deep inside the park you will find a rocket Vostok and and an aircraft. What is funny the inside of the aircraft there is actually a photo exhibition. Near the northern entrance you there is a famous sculpture “Worker and Kolkhoz Woman”. It is extremely famous among Russians as all the movies by Mosfilm corporation used to start with the picture of this statue. But if you go further inside the park you will reach a very calm area. A lake is there, forest and birds singing. Since the park occupies a large area I suggest you to rent a bicycle.

Sokolniki Park – A Place For A Hunt Or For Leisure?

The park got its name because of the royal falconry, which took place there in the past when there was a dense forest. (Sokol means a falcon.) In 2011 it was significantly transformed: updated lawns, landscaped ponds and picnic areas, restored summer cinema and theater, a large rose garden, sports grounds, bicycle paths and other things.

From the main entrance along the alley you can walk to the Sokolniki circle, where 8 alleys form 9 sectors, in each of them you will find trees of the same breed.  The park is famous for its rosary, as well as flower decoration. On the territory of the park there are concert halls, a library, amusement zone, dances zone and many many other attractions. In winter the park has a skating rink (a free of charge one) and ski runs. During the warm season you can rent a bicycle.

Tsaritsino Park – A Different World Inside Moscow

Here you can walk for hours, admiring the most beautiful nature and magnificent architecture.

The most amazing part of the park is the lake with a light and musical fountain. Every evening the fountain starts the show. Lights and music combined make you feel like you are not in Moscow but in a fairy tale. The park is also well equipped for sports lovers and healthy lifestyle. There are volleyball and basketball courts, a tennis court, sports facilities for acrobatics, bodybuilding equipment.

What I personally like about this park is the atmosphere. This place is actually far from the city center but I love going there anyway. Whenever I go there I feel like I left Moscow with all its hectic lifestyle. It is the place where I relax, enjoy myself or a company of my friends and feel kind of different. By the way totally suggested for a date!

Kolomenskoye Park – Combination Of Reserve and Architecture

The Kolomenskoye park is actually a Museum-Reserve. It is a former residence of Russian tsars and one of the most scenic places in Moscow.

 Alike with Tsaritsino park Kolomenskoye park has its own special atmosphere with all the architecture, trees, ponds and even a river bank. The park regularly hosts various folk festivals and different fairs. In summer time you can play with kites or rent a bicycle and ride around the huge area of the park.

I love the view that you get on the city from one of the hills near the river. I love the apple trees alleys and the beautiful churches. It is also a bit far from the city center but yet worth going there. One of my best friends even celebrated her wedding there.

Aptekarsky Garden or Botanical garden of the Moscow State University – The Best Botanical Garden in The World

Aptekar in Russian language means a pharmacist so basically it is a pharmacist’s garden. It was founded in 1706 by Peter The Great for growing medicinal plants for the royal family. But later they moved it from under the walls of the Kremlin to the current location.

In the botanical garden there are no attractions and noisy crowds of tourists. The area of the garden is not as big as any other park in Moscow. And the entrance is not free. But this exactly what makes this park one of the most comfortable in the city. In the Aptekarsky garden they grow thousands of different plants, flowers and trees. Some of the trees are more than 300 years old. They held different festivals there: flowers festivals, sand and ice sculptures expositions.

For me it is one of the most beautiful parks not only in Moscow but in the world. I have never seen so many different flowers and plants anywhere else. And trust me I am a real park lover. And what is more the staff really takes care about every single tree or plant there, some of the trees have names and stories. I love it there and I think the price is really worth what you get.

Victory Park – A Park That Makes Us Remember The War

The park is located on the Poklonnaya Hill and it has one of the world’s largest memorial complexes dedicated to the World War II. The park was opened for the 50th anniversary of the Victory on May 9, 1995. It is also one of the main venues in the city for holding a variety of mass events.

On the main avenue of the park there are with 1418 fountains – exactly as long as the war lasted. Fountains make five water terraces, symbolizing five years of military operations. And in the center of the park there is the Museum of the Great Patriotic War. If you are interested in the history of the war do not miss it. The Poklonnaya Hill is a part of the park and from the hill you get one of the best views on the city of Moscow. And I could say this is the best place for watching the fireworks during the mass celebrations. But be aware it gets too crowded then. As in most of the other big parks you can rent a bicycle or rollers there.

Izmailovsky Park – A Mix of a Big Forest and Attractions

Izmaylovsky Park occupies a huge green territory, making up a large part of the Izmailovo district. The park consists of two parts: Izmaylovsky Park of Culture and Rest and the forest park of Izmailovo. First part is full of attractions and restaurants while the second one is like a real forest with pine trees, birch groves, beautiful clearings and ponds.

It is easy to spend there a whole day. A large landscaped area and a lot of various entertainments for children and adults will help you not to get bored. An observation wheel, a boat station, children’s playgrounds, a dance floor, sports grounds, a skate park – all this is only a small part of the possible leisure activities. In the park there are bike paths and a rental services.

I don’t go there often to be honest. But the park is very very close whenever to a souvenir market on Partizanskaya metro station. And whenever the weather is nice and I have enough of free time I stroll through the alleys of the park and enjoy the nature. So if you are going to the souvenir market too and you have enough free time then do go to the park too.
