7 Best Smoky Mountain Moonshine Distillery Tasting & Tours In Tennessee
Getting a taste of Smoky Mountain moonshine for yourself is a fantastic way to celebrate a visit to the Smokies.
Tennessee is known for its moonshine history, particularly in the Great Smoky Mountains region. This history is somewhat shady and mysterious, which is why so many people are attracted to drinking this spirit.
Specifically, you can go to moonshine tasting Gatlinburg distilleries and others in the region. Keep reading to learn the history of moonshine in the Great Smoky Mountains, how this spirit is made, and the best places where you can taste moonshine and tour distilling facilities.
Best Moonshine Gatlinburg Tours & Tastings
A few great moonshine tasting Gatlinburg distilleries can teach you about the colorful lore and process behind their spirits. You can’t go wrong by stopping at one of them … or all of them!
Ole Smoky Moonshine Distillery
Possibly the most widely known of the Gatlinburg moonshine distilleries, Ole Smoky Moonshine Distillery was established in 2010.
As the first federally licensed distillery in East Tennessee, it showcases the art of distilling authentic moonshine. The Ole Smoky Mountain moonshine distillery’s recipes and processes are passed-down secrets and traditions.
Moonshine Distillery Tours Near Me
If you’re looking for a “moonshine distillery near me” to tour when visiting the Smoky Mountains, don’t miss The Holler.
The Holler in Gatlinburg is Ole Smoky’s main production and touring facility. You can get a behind-the-scenes look at everything on a guided tour and enjoy a 13-sample tasting of excellent moonshine and whiskey.
If you don’t have time for a tour, you can stop in for samples of up to seven flavors of this Gatlinburg moonshine — such as apple pie, lemon drop, peach, and strawberry.
Ole Smoky has a few other locations as well. The Ole Smoky Whiskey Barrelhouse is in Gatlinburg, the Ole Smoky Barn is in Pigeon Forge, and 6th & Peabody is in Nashville. All of them offer moonshine samples.
Sugarlands Distilling Company
Another popular moonshine tasting Gatlinburg distillery is Sugarlands Distilling Co. , which is proud to be locally owned and community-minded.
The distillery opened downtown in 2014 and offers free guided tours of its facility to give you a look at what happens behind the scenes of moonshine production. Other tour and workshop options include the Blended Cocktail Tour, Meet the Distiller Workshop, and Distiller for the Day Workshop.
The Sugarlands distillery is open nearly every day, and you get to sample the award-winning spirits before you leave.
Moonshine tastings are led by an expert, and you’ll receive tasting notes and cocktail ideas. With every $5 tasting, you get a $5 voucher to redeem with an in-store purchase.
The Tennessee moonshine company store sells Sugarlands spirits, apparel, and mountain merchandise. On the Back Porch pavilion, it hosts evening concerts from time to time.
Tennessee Shine Company
With a location in Gatlinburg, the Tennessee Shine Co. focuses on bottling the best moonshine rather than the most moonshine.
This small-batch distilling company uses family recipes that have been passed down for generations. It makes a variety of unique flavors — Big Orange Dreamsicle, Nanner Puddin’, Choco Moo Shine, Blue Houdini, Pina Colada, and many more.
While you’re getting a taste of these flavorful spirits, you can enjoy a friendly, down-home atmosphere.
On top of that, the TN Shine Co. makes whiskey and wine. The distillery has several other locations as well — Pigeon Forge, Wear Valley, and Sevierville.
At the Sevierville location, you can join a moonshine tour that covers the history of this spirit and its connection to NASCAR. You’ll learn how the spirits are made and sample them too.
Nearby Moonshine Tasting Gatlinburg Distilleries
The Great Smoky Mountains has more than just the three Gatlinburg moonshine distilleries. Many others are spread around the region, and we’ve highlighted a few that we think you should visit for tastings.
Old Forge Distillery
In Pigeon Forge, Old Forge Distillery makes award-winning craft spirits. The quality grains that it uses come from The Old Mill, one of the oldest continuously operating gristmills in the United States.
The moonshine Pigeon Forge distillery stone grinds the grains like the generations before. In addition to mason jars of moonshine, it makes bourbon whiskey, cream liqueurs, gin, rum, vodka, moonshine cherries, and more.
You can even go to the Pigeon Forge distillery cocktail bar for a taste of seasonal and signature cocktails crafted by mixologists.
Tennessee Legend Distillery
More than just a shop for moonshine, Tennessee Legend Distillery was established in 2015. It has two locations in Sevierville — one on Newport Hwy and another on Winfield Dunn Pkwy.
Both of them allow you to taste the award-winning White Lightning Moonshine and Salted Caramel whiskey. The distillery makes cream liqueur and other straight spirits too.
Bootleggers Distillery
There’s a myth that bootleggers created a secret society that tracked down the best moonshine, distillation methods, and recipes. Over the generations, these components were refined, and Bootleggers Distillery in Hartford brings these secrets to the masses.
You can go for a moonshine tour and tasting any day of the week. If you want to make your own whiskey, the Build a Barrel program lets you do that with assistance from the distilling team.
Adventure Distilling Co.
Offering a unique moonshine experience, Adventure Distilling Co. in Cosby has a one-of-a-kind way of making quality liquor.
The still house is located in a small green building on family-owned land. JB’s 103 is its signature spirit, which is 103 proof clear corn liquor.
During tours and tastings, you could meet JB Rader, the legendary namesake of the signature moonshine.
The History of Great Smoky Mountains Tennessee Moonshine
Did you know that moonshine has been around for centuries? It originated in Ireland and Scotland, where distilling and drinking whiskey were traditions. When immigrants from those Celtic countries arrived in the Appalachian Mountains, they used corn to make whiskey.
Decades later, the federal government passed a whiskey tax of $2 per gallon, which was a 20-cent increase that many people in the mountains simply couldn’t afford. As a result, they stopped paying the tax and continued to distill the whiskey.
They became known as “moonshiners,” a word that’s derived from the fact that they secretly made illegal whiskey in the mountains at night. That’s when this particular type of whiskey earned the name moonshine.
In the Great Smoky Mountains, moonshine distillation became a vital source of extra revenue for many farmers. Transforming the surplus corn into whiskey made it more viable and easier to move, trade, and sell. The money that they made helped them pay bills, start new businesses, and provide for their families.
A favorite distilling spot on the Tennessee side of the Smokies was the Forbidden Caverns because it was a remote location with a reliable water supply. You can see an old moonshine still while touring the caverns, which are in Sevierville less than one hour from Gatlinburg.
Famous Moonshiners
One infamous moonshiner was Lewis Redmond, a North Carolina native who became a legend after killing a deputy while trying to avoid arrest in 1876.
He evaded the law and shared his moonshine profits with area residents until he was arrested in 1881. Eventually, he was pardoned and worked in a South Carolina government-operated distillery.
However, the most famous moonshiner of recent history was Marvin Sutton, nicknamed Popcorn. His popularity grew after he appeared in various documentaries and released an autobiography — “Me and My Likker.”
In 2007, the federal government busted him, but he passed away before serving the sentence.
Rumor: In the 1920s, mob boss Al Capone is believed to have hidden his illicit spirits in the Great Smoky Mountains before moving them to Chicago.
Modern Moonshine Distilleries
It wasn’t until 2009 that Tennessee passed a state law that allowed moonshine distilleries to open in Gatlinburg and across the state, making it legal to make moonshine in Tennessee.
Ole Smoky Moonshine Distillery was the first in Gatlinburg. Since then, many wonderful moonshine Tennessee distilleries have popped up in the greater area, and tours have become popular.
The Process of Making Gatlinburg Moonshine
Traditionally, the term “moonshining” refers to making or smuggling illegal spirits under moonlight or at night. Now that it’s legal to make moonshine, Gatlinburg distilleries don’t have to operate in secret. Every distillery might use its own ingredients and processes, but the basics are nearly the same.
Essentially, moonshine consists of cornmeal, sugar, water, and yeast, and these ingredients go through two critically timed processes.
Fermentation is the first process, which involves using yeast to convert sugar into acids, alcohol, and gases. The resulting mixture is called the mash.
The second part of the moonshine making process is distillation, the fundamental steps for which include:
- Heat the mash to about 172 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Evaporate the alcohol, and collect the steam in a worm box (water-filled barrel or crate) through a pipe before it returns to its liquid form.
- Cool the alcohol vapor in the worm box, allowing it to condense back into a liquid.
- Filter the liquid from the worm box into a barrel or other container.
Initially, moonshine comes out of these processes as a clear liquid, which is when the flavor and alcohol are most potent.
The color changes after it ages for several months or years in charred oak barrels. In a lot of cases, distilleries add fruits — apples, cherries, peaches, strawberries — and other ingredients to produce a range of flavors of moonshine, which also change the color.

MOONSHINE BANDITS Announce 'Pour Decisions' Headlining Summer Tour
Tickets will go on sale Thursday, May 25 at 10:00 A.M. PT.
MOONSHINE BANDITS will bring their genre-defying signature sound which melds backwoods bravado, country soul, keg-thumping beats, and hip-hop fusion to audiences across the U.S. this summer on a headlining tour following the July 14 release of their anticipated album POUR DECISIONS via ONErpm.
The tour will start on Saturday, June 3 and stretch throughout the summer including three performances at the famed Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in Sturgis, SD. During the run, MOONSHINE BANDITS will be supported by Good Ol' Boyz, Dusty Leigh, Brandon Hart, and Who TF Is Justin Time? on various dates. Tickets will go on sale Thursday, May 25 at 10:00 A.M. PT at https://moonshinebandits.com/ . See below for the full tour dates.
“There's a reason why we selected Dusty, Good Ol' Boyz, and Justin to be a part of this tour,” says MOONSHINE BANDITS front men Dusty ‘Big Tex’ Dahlgren and Brett “Bird” Brooks. “We wanted this run to be wild and crazy. We wanted it to be a big party so everyone that attends can leave their job and not worry about any day-to-day stress. There's definitely going to be some ‘Pour Decisions’ made and we can't wait to make them over and over again each night with you all!”
MOONSHINE BANDITS have paved the way for the budding country/rap genre amassing a dedicated legion of fans who call themselves the “Shiner Nation” with their grassroots touring and rebellious, outlaw values.
The California-based duo recently shared the second single from POUR DECISIONS: “I’m A Problem” which features Juno Award-winning Canadian rapper MADCHILD. Watch the music video HERE . The album’s anthemic, chant-inducing debut single “I’m A Rebel” was released on March 15; stream it HERE .
POUR DECISIONS features 15-tracks that continue to show MOONSHINE BANDITS paving their own lane. The album takes its inspiration from the struggles and successes of America’s extraordinary era when dreams were being made while hunting for that elusive precious gem.
Just like the rumrunners, bootleggers, smugglers, and outlaws of old, the MOONSHINE BANDITS provide a supply of goods for the demand, defying the mandates and trends of mainstream pop-culture. Playing off its title, the duo have also partnered with California Cowboy Whiskey to release Bucked Up Whiskey.

Moonshine Made Legal White lightnin’ ain’t illegal anymore! Moonshine is legit and ready to sample in the Great Smoky Mountains of Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg, and Sevierville, Tennessee. Moonshine has been around for centuries and is deeply rooted in Smoky Mountain culture.
Long story short, taxes were too high on alcohol for most farmers a few hundred years ago, so they started distilling and selling whiskey in secret. During the 1920s Prohibition, moonshiners made illegal spirits and bootleggers smuggled jars and jugs across county and state lines. Since 2009, ‘shiners in Tennessee can distill and sell moonshine without hiding, running, or fearing the law.
Today, our Smoky Mountain moonshine tradition continues, and moonshine has become a popular whiskey beverage to enjoy on vacation in the Smokies. Once hidden in caves, the backwoods, and even homesteads, distilleries now offer tastings and tours. You can even check out visible remnants of a secret distillery in the Forbidden Caverns of Sevierville.
Fun Facts About Moonshine
- Remember the classic “XXX” on jugs in old photos or cartoons? Each X told how many times that batch of moonshine was run through the still. With 3 Xs, it meant high quality alcohol back in the day.
- The name “moonshine” came about because illegal whiskey had to be distilled in secret. And the best time to work in secret was at night, under the moonlight in the mountains.
- Mountain Dew was actually developed as a chaser for moonshine in 1932. In fact, the name “Mountain Dew” comes from old Southern or Scots/Irish slang for moonshine.

Find out more about Gatlinburg moonshine and its Smoky Mountain roots. Soon you’ll “get your corn from a jar” just like they do on Rocky Top.
What Is Moonshine?
Once upon a time, moonshine was a homemade (which means illegally made) liquor made from a corn base. It is an unaged whiskey and is often clear in color. Moonshine can be powerful stuff, sometimes measuring more than 190 proof. It was made in a secret still and bottled in mason jars. You might know moonshine by another name. Slang terms for the homemade liquor include: white liquor, white lightning, mountain dew, choop, hooch, homebrew, shiney, white whiskey, and mash liquor .
Today moonshine is a little different. You’ll find quite a few Gatlinburg distilleries that make legal moonshine, and the stuff can be sweet to sip. To truly appreciate Gatlinburg’s moonshine, you need to know it’s rich backstory. Keep reading to learn how the moon shines in Gatlinburg.
Gatlinburg Moonshine: Illicit History
Moonshine in the Smoky Mountains dates all the way back to the 18th century. The Southern Appalachian area was originally settled by many Scottish and Irish immigrants, and they brought recipes for homemade corn liquor with them. In 1791, Alexander Hamilton imposed a tax on whiskey production. This is when illegal moonshine production became a cultural mainstay in Appalachia and the South
Did you know how moonshine got its name ? Moonshine was made and enjoyed at night time so those partaking in the illegal liquor would avoid being caught.
An Appalachian Lifestyle
Over the years, moonshine became an important stream of extra revenue for farmers in the Smoky Mountains. Corn was one of the few crops that would grow in the rocky mountain soil. When their extra corn was transformed into whiskey, it became easier to store, move and sell, which gave farmers extra money. Gatlinburg was a hot spot for moonshine production. Other key areas for making moonshine included the Forbidden Cabins near Sevierville, Wears Valley, Pittman Center and Cosby.
Moonshine grew in popularity during Prohibition. The U.S. government banned all alcohol from 1920-1933, so those who liked to imbibe found illegal methods to getting their spirits. Many turned to Smoky Mountain moonshine. It has been rumored, but not confirmed, that notorious gangster Al Capone stored his liquor supplies in the Smoky Mountains near Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge.
Tennessee Moonshine Legalized
Prohibition was repealed on Dec. 5, 1933. Even though alcohol became legal again in Tennessee and across the country, illegal moonshine remained part of the East Tennessee experience. Moonshine was illegal until 2009, when Tennessee laws started allowing special commercial distilleries for moonshine. Gatlinburg distilleries started popping up and many people have been introduced to moonshine in the decade since.
Since moonshine became legal in Tennessee in 2009, many Gatlinburg distilleries have become part of the Smoky Mountain experience. Sevier is one of the handfuls of Tennessee counties that allow commercial moonshine distilleries. The first legal jar of moonshine was sold in Gatlinburg on July 3, 2010.
Distilleries Today
Today Gatlinburg distilleries dot the Parkway and head into the hills, giving you a chance to experience moonshine like never before. Adult vacationers can taste a bit of Appalachian heritage. While some venues are family friendly, many Gatlinburg distilleries offer adults-only fun. Enjoy some time away from the kids and make sweet memories sipping ’shine in the Smokies.
Many of the Gatlinburg distilleries are located in downtown, making this bustling area a fun stop for those seeking to taste something different. Gatlinburg moonshine tours can take you to each stop, allowing you to taste and compare while truly savoring the Appalachian flavor. If you want to get a true taste of the Smoky Mountains, consider making a Gatlinburg moonshine tour part of your next vacation. Some moonshine tours are free, other distilleries charge a small fee for a tour.
Moonshine Tours & Tastings
One of the best parts of visiting a ‘shine shop is Gatlinburg moonshine tasting. One local distillery boasts more than 40 flavors of moonshine, ranging from apple pie to big orange. Moonshine pickles and moonshine cherries are on the table, too. Gatlinburg moonshine tastings are often limited to a few free samples -- from there you’ll have to buy a bottle of your favorite to enjoy at home.
The Smoky Mountains are steeped in history, and this includes the illicit backstory of Gatlinburg moonshine. Make the most of your next Smoky Mountain vacation and partake in this adults-only beverage right here in the hills. Learn more about things to do and see in the Smoky Mountains. Ticket prices for the Trans-Siberian Railway also depend on the current ruble exchange rate.
Is the Trans-Siberian Railway expensive?
Before starting on your Trans-Siberian Railway adventure you naturally want to know what the entire trip will cost. Although this sounds like a simple question, it is pretty difficult to answer. The Trans-Siberian Railway price of travel depends on the following factors:
- Which travel class do I want to use? The price for a first class ticket is about three times the price of a 3rd class ticket
- Am I willing to buy the tickets myself and assume responsibility for the organisation of the trip?
- How many stopovers do I want to make? The more breaks, the higher the total price.
- What sort of accommodation do I want? Will it be a luxury hotel or will a hostel dormitory be sufficient?
- What tours and excursions would I like to go on?
- What is the current exchange rate for rubles?
Basically, everything from a luxury to a budget holiday is available. If you buy yourself a 3rd Class nonstop ticket at the counter, a few hundred Euros will cover the price. All you will experience is a week on the Trans-Siberian train and will see nothing of the cities on the way. There is, however, any amount of room for upward expansion. Everyone makes different choices about which aspects they are willing to spend money on. I personally prefer to save money on accommodation and railcar class, visit as many cities and do as many trips as possible. To enable better classification of your travel expenses I have contrasted two typical traveler types. In the third column you can calculate the total cost of your own journey on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that these are only rough estimations and not exact prices.
The all-in costs seem fairly high at first. However, they cover everything and it is quite a long journey taking four weeks. Many people forget to consider that when looking at the list. We should also deduct the running costs for food and leisure at home. I think most visitors to this page will classify themselves somewhere between the two categories, that is around the € 2,000 – € 2,500 range. When comparing these prices with other travel packages, you get the impression that it is hardly worthwhile travelling individually on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that most packages last no more than 14 days and you are herded like cattle through the most beautiful locations.
If you spend less time on the Trans-Siberian Railway you will, of course, pay less. I chose this particular travel length because I prefer not to do things by halves. If you fulfill your dream of travelling on the Trans-Siberian Railway, enjoy it and don’t rush things. But it’s up to you, of course. Try playing around with the form a bit to find the appropriate price for your trip.
