Estadio Vicente Calderón

Estadio Vicente Calderon

Club: Club Atlético de Madrid | Opening: 1966 | Capacity: 54,960 seats

History and description

Estadio Vicente Calderón was built in the 1960s as the replacement for Atlético’s then-home Stadium Metropolitano .

Stadium Metropolitano had been the home of Atlético since 1923, but had significantly aged and rivals Real Madrid had just opened the new Estadio Santiago Bernabéu .

Land was bought on the southern edge of the city on the banks of the river Manzaneras, and while this land was technically closer to Madrid’s centre than the Metropolitano, many fans still objected to a site that was deemed outside of the city.

Estadio Vicente Calderón officially opened on the 2nd of October 1966 with a league match between Atlético and Valencia (1-1), though construction of the main stand had not been finished yet due to funding problems.

The stadium was finally completed in 1970, and then counted with a capacity of 62,000 seats and no standing areas, which made Estadio Vicente Calderón the first large all-seater stadium in Europe.

The stadium had initially been called Estadio de Manzaneras, but its name was changed in 1971 in honour of  club-president Vicente Calderón, who had overseen the construction of the stadium.

Estadio Vicente Calderón was selected as one of the playing venues of the 1982 World Cup, during which it hosted three second-round group matches.

The stadium has changed little over the years, and only received a few refurbishments that included the installation of the red-white-and-blue seats, which also reduced capacity somewhat.

In 2011, Atletico announced plans to replace Estadio Vicente Calderon with a new stadium, Wanda Metropolitano , at the site of Estadio de la Peineta in the east of the city. Atletico stated the ambition to move into their new home in 2015, but works progressed slowly and completion was pushed back to the start of the 2017-18 season.

The last match at Estadio Vicente Calderon was played on 27 May 2017 when Barcelona and Alaves squared off for the Copa del Rey final. Six days earlier, Atletico had played their last match at the stadium: a league match versus Athletic (3-1).

Following Atletico’s move to their new stadium, the Vicente Calderon will be demolished and replaced by a new development likely including apartment buildings and a park.

How to get to Estadio Vicente Calderon

Estadio Vicente Calderón is located on the south-western edge of Madrid’s city centre, on the banks of the river Manzaneras and along the M-30 motorway which runs underneath the main stand.

The stadium is an approximate 30 minutes walk from Plaza Mayor, and even less from Madrid’s Palacio Real, from where it is an almost straight walk south.

The closest metro station is Pirámides, from where it is a 10-minute walk to the stadium. Pirámides lies on metro line 5, which crosses right through Madrid’s centre (e.g. stops Ópera, Callao, and Gran Via). Metro station Marques de Vadillo, also on line 5, but on the other side of the river, lies a 15-minute walk away from the stadium.

Pirámides station is also served by Cercanía commuter trains. Line C-7 and C-10 connect the stadium with, among others, train stations Atocha and Chamartín.

Address: Paseo Virgen del Puerto 67, 28005 Madrid

Eat, drink, and sleep near Estadio Vicente Calderon

Estadio Vicente Calderón is located in a rather quiet urban neighbourhood, though not far away from the southern edge of Madrid’s city centre. There are a few bars and restaurants around, but it might be easier to eat or drink in the centre and then walk or take a metro to the stadium.

If you wish to stay as close as possible to Estadio Vicente Calderón, then Hotel NH Ribera de Manzanares will be your pick. It lies almost adjacent to the stadium, gets good reviews, and a room costs about €100.00 per night. The Holiday Inn Pirámides is only a little further away, but also more affordable.

Staying in the southern part of the city centre may be a better option if you want to include some sightseeing or head into the nightlife. Hotel Puerta de Toledo , Hotel Gavinet , and HRC Hotel get good reviews, are reasonably affordable, and no more than 15 minutes walking from either the stadium or the Plaza Mayor.

We had a wonderful visit in Early April for a night game. What an experience. Sad to hear they are moving away from the Cauldron it was wonderful.

Looking forward to our first trip in a couple of weeks time… We’ve bought tickets online directly from Atletico for the Spanish Super Cup match v Real. They email the tickets to you so you just need to print them off at home.

I visited the stadium in 2012. I was suprised how old and neglected it looked. However it is easily reached by public transport and supporters are very passionate.

I would like to remark that nowdays you can reach to the stadium by bike very easily by the lineal park that runs along the Manzanares river.

If you begin your trip towards the stadium at the Royal Palace side that faces the river, you can enjoy all the bridges (old and new) that have been designed throughout the years, and take a beer or refreshments on the stilish kiosks located each 500 m.

Vicente Calderón

A stadium of highest category; one of the top stadiums of europe.

The stadium was inaugurated in 1966 and bore the name “Estadio del Manzanares”. Thanks to its 54.800 seats, with a capacity of 62.000 spectators, it fulfills the UEFA norms for sport facilities.  In addition, the stadium was being accorded the honor to be advertised as a “five-star-stadium” which contains the opportunity to hold European Cup games such as the Champions League Final.

• Acquisition of property: 16th March 1961 • Start of construction: In the year 1961

The first game in the stadium was against the FC Valencia. The end result was 1:1 after goals of Luis Aragonés and Paquito.

On May 23rd in 1972, after modernization work and renaming, the stadium was inaugurated with an international match between Spain and Uruguay which the host could win through a 2:0.

• Contemporary name: Estadio Vicente Calderón • Actual capacity: 54.851 spectators, all of them seats • Size of the areal: 35.000 sqm • Squaremeter per seats: 27.460 sqm, this is more than two spectators per sqm

All of this means space and comfort and exceeds by far the determined norms for sports events. Out of the 54.851 seats, 18.850 are currently roofed. The main stand was inaugurated on the 6th of February 1972, at the game against Athletic Bilbao which ended 1:2. The main stand is completely roofed (5000 sqm) and was built of iron and aluminum.

The pitch’s size is 105×70 m. In addition, there is the possibility to divert water in case that it rained a lot or to water the pitch through sprinkler systems. Furthermore there is a seven meter broad warm-down zone which extends from the seats in the first row to the grass. It is completely cemented.

Does the stadium offer tours? I couldn't find anything about it on Atletico Madrid's website. I searched here but only found a link to the club's site that no longer works. I will be there in July, just after the World Cup, during the week.

Well, I don't know if you like to hear this but the self-guided tour of Estadio Bernabeu, the other team's stadium, is awesome. FYI, I am completely

Yes, I am going to both stadiums. I know RM is the bigger club and the Bernabeu is a legendary stadium, but being a soccer fan I just can't pass up Atletico's stadium especially when it's a short walk from my hotel.

Page down on this link and you will see photos of all parts of the tour. It's self-guided and cost 15E / adult and 10E for each child under 14. It's in Spanish....it says you can have the page translated... I don't know how to do this.

But here is the link.

http://www.santiagobernabeu.com/contentid-10.html

Here is the English translation. Didn't read the whole thing so I can't vouch for it, but you should find it mostly helpful. You can take bus or metro/subway to the stadium.

Estadio Bernabeu.

BTW, the tour is totally awesome if you are any kind of soccer fan...It's what the ideal soccer stadium of the richest soccer club in the world...or so I am told.

Thank you Holakjs. The info was extremely helpful.

Atletico Madrid Vicente Calderon

Estadio Vicente Calderon, Atletico-Real Madrid, Sat Nov 19

Home of Atletico Madrid, the Estadio Vicente Calderon is located in south Madrid, near a gas works and the Mahou brewery. The comparison with Real’s palatial Bernabeu on a central boulevard could not be more pronounced.

Atletico Madrid were founded as Athletic Club de Madrid in 1903 by local Basque students, a branch of the namesake team in Bilbao, and similarly first wore blue, then red-and-white stripes.

Ever since, the ‘Rojiblancos’ have also been known somewhat mockingly as the ‘Colchoneros’, the ‘Mattress-Makers’, a reference to the cheaper beds of the day. Certainly, the later Atletico were working-class, first based at Vallecas, then, after separating from Athletic Bilbao, at the Estadio Metropolitano.

After two further title wins under Helenio Herrera, Atletico were a major force, albeit one behind Real and Barca. As the giants waned, Atletico nipped in to win the league, and gain sundry silverware – including the Cup-Winners’ Cup of 1962. Soon after the championship win of 1966, long-term club president, Vicente Calderon opened a new stadium on the banks of the river it abutted: the Manzanares. After his death, it bore his name.

With a capacity of 62,000, Atletico’s stadium opened in October 1966, Spain’s first all-seated venue. Five years later, the man behind the project, then club president Vicente Calderon, was given the honour of having the stadium renamed after him.

Atletico3

Although capacity has gradually been reduced – it currently holds nearly 55,000 – the radical lay-out remains, one stand straddling a main road, making its upper tier vibrate with heavy traffic. A venue for the 1982 World Cup, it has been classified as a UEFA Elite stadium for international fixtures.

The stadium was a major factor in Atletico’s memorable title win of 1995-96. Controversial ex-Marbella mayor Jesús Gil y Gil had become long-term club president in 1987, seeing out 30 coaches. Only one, Raddy Antic, won Gil the title, in 1996, thanks to fellow Serbian playmaker Milinko Pantic and Argentine Diego Simeone. Gil then paid a fortune for top foreign stars, the club lost balance, momentum and eventually even their top-flight status. Gil ended up in jail.

Atletico Madrid Vicente Calderon

Simeone, of course, has returned as coach, leading the most successful Atletico side of all time. A Europa League trophy, two Champions League finals and, in the Messi/Ronaldo era, a Spanish League title, have all been achieved by the Colchoneros under Simeone.

Meanwhile, how long Atletico stay at the Vicente Calderon is in question, with serious plans to move to a new stadium, ‘La Peineta’ right across town. All will become clear after Atletico take ownership of their current home in 2016, 50 years after its unveiling.

On the ground

Atletico Madrid Vicente Calderon

The best seats at the Vicente Calderon in the tribuna main stand, and in the lateral. Home fans gather in the Fondo Sur, visitors a far section of the second tier in the facing Fondo Norte.

The stadium is a short walk from Piramides metro stop on green line 5. The Marques de Vadillo stop on the same line is also reasonably close.

Atletico9

The taquillas are set in the south-west and north-west corners of the stadium, at either end of the Tribuna main stand, on the Paseo Virgen del Puerto. They open 11am-2pm and 5-8pm on the day before games and from 11am until kick-off on match days.

An excellent view is to be had from anywhere in the second tier, either Fondo or Lateral, for which tickets are generally available.

Atletico2

The cheapest tickets are €30-€40, in the Fondos, Segundo and Primer Anfiteatros, €40-€50 in the Lateral, €40 in the lower tier Grada at the back and €60 for the same level along the Lateral Este. €70 gets you a seat in the Tribuna on the West Side.

You can also use any ATM in the Servicaixa network, or through the club website (Spanish-only for ticket sales), which in turn directs you to ticketmaster.es where English is available.

The club shop (Mon-Sat 10am-8pm, times vary for match days) by gate 10 does a roaring trade in Azerbaijan-sponsored club shirts (away ones now black-and-yellow) as well as the usual paraphernalia.

Atletico Madrid Vicente Calderon

Enter through the stadium restaurant 1903 Sport Arena by gate 23 for the museum (€6, Tue-Sun, 11am-7pm, until kick-off on match days) and tour (€10 combined, winter Tue-Fri 1pm-5.30pm, Sat-Sun noon, 1pm, 4pm, 5.30pm; summer Tue-Sun noon, 1pm, 4.30pm, 5.30pm). Beginning with the stadium itself – note the new stadium plans – visitors check out the Fondo Sur and its murals below, VIP areas, dressing room and tunnel. They are then left to enjoy the retro treasure of the museum, Ludo sets, rattles and the like.

You’ll find bars along Paseo de los Melancolicos , most notably the Cerverceria Alegre (No.49), with images of the Calderon being built and classic Atleti line-ups amid a festive pre-match atmosphere. Nearby, the Cafeteria Piramides (Glorieta Pirámides 6) is another Rojiblanco haunt, with more Calderon imagery on display.

The Cafeteria Dumas (c/San Epifanio 1), close by but tucked away, offers tables outside and bottled Alhambra beer.

At the stadium, VIP guests reserve tables at the 1903 Sport Arena restaurant at gate 23.

The story of Atletico Madrid's new Wanda Metropolitano Stadium

By James Walker-Roberts

Tuesday 12 September 2017 19:40, UK

MADRID, SPAIN - FEBRUARY 26: Head coach Diego Simeone of Club Atletico de Madrid reacts during the La Liga match between Club Atletico de Madrid and FC Ba

Atletico Madrid will play their first game at their new Wanda Metropolitano Stadium on Saturday, live on Sky Sports Football.

After bidding farewell to the Vicente Calderon at the end of the 2016/17 season, Atletico have started the 2017/18 campaign with three away matches as the final touches have been made to the 68,000-seater stadium.

Ahead of the curtain-raiser against Malaga on Saturday, here's everything you need to know about Atletico's new stadium...

Live La Liga Football

Sky Sports

A long time coming

Atletico first talked about moving to the former athletics stadium nearly 30 years ago, but saw their efforts hampered by various setbacks, such as financial and legal problems. Plans were also hit by the economic crisis in Spain, which significantly reduced the value of the planned buildings on the site of the Vicente Calderon.

The stadium itself was built in 1994 with a 20,000 capacity but has largely been vacant after several failed bids for the Olympics. Atletico eventually managed to secure funding for the stadium thanks to help from Chinese conglomerate Dalian Wanda Group, who bought a 20 per cent share in the club in 2015.

The name for the new stadium comes from the investors - 'Wanda' - and also Atletico's first permanent stadium, the Stadium Metropolitano de Madrid, which they played in from 1923-66.

"My grandfather has told me about the Metropolitano, I know what it means for the Atleticos," says Atletico legend Fernando Torres.

"In these modern times, it is lucky to have a partner like Wanda. For those who have Atleti blood the surname makes us emotional too, it is beautiful. All my memories are at the Calderon, but maybe someday I can tell my grandfather I played at the Metropolitano."

Atletico de Madrid's President, Enrique Cerezo announces the name of their new stadium, Wanda Metropolitano, during a presentation at the Vicente Calderon

Work on the stadium has not gone completely smoothly. There have been concerns that the construction will not be completed in time and also that the transport links will not be ready.

While the Vicente Calderon was a short walk from Plaza Mayor, one of the capital's main squares, the Wanda is around a 30-minute drive, near to the airport. In late August there were reports that official permission had not yet been given for access links connecting the stadium to the motorway.

There were fears that Atletico would need to sell several of their star players to raise money for the stadium, and also questions asked after a video showed rainwater leaking through the roof.

Club president Enrique Cerezo labelled the footage "stupid" while the club tweeted to say: "It rains in Madrid and drops water on the stairs. It's normal. We are still heat-sealing the roof. Stay calm, it will be perfect on 16/9!"

There have been also been protests from Atletico fan group Senales de Humo, saying they wanted to "test the legality" of everything that has been done, while suggesting a redevelopment of the Calderon would be better for the club.

At the start of the year, club chief executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin said the new stadium is "an exciting challenge", but acknowledged it is also "a big risk as it will cause a big short-term debt for the club".

However, despite the concerns, the stadium has finally been completed.

What's been said?

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo: "It will be one of the best, if not the best, stadiums in Europe."

Atletico head coach Diego Simeone: "The club has been growing a lot since we started in 2011 and I have always seen the possibility of enormous improvement. The fans will never lose their love for the Metropolitano, then the Calderon, and they will fall in love with the Metropolitano Wanda, because what really entices the fans is the shirt. And as long as I do not change the shirt, everything else can be improved. The stadium is going to be a pressure cooker."

Atletico chief executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin: "Our new home will be a model stadium in the world. Having the experience of managing the Calderon for the last 25 years and meeting our fans, I am convinced that the Metropolitano Wanda will be the best stadium for Atletico Madrid."

Five-star stadium

With an increase of around 12,000 seats from the Vicente Calderon, Atletico have sold more season tickets than ever before, and there will be plenty of facilities for the fans to enjoy. The new stadium meets all of UEFA's five-star criteria and is in the running to host the Champions League final in 2019.

All seats - including the 7,500 corporate seats - will be covered by a roof while there will be 79 "Neptuno" VIP suites of various sizes and a "Walk of Legends", with plaques for every player that has played over 100 games for the club.

That has sparked some debate among fans, with some less-well-thought-of players included on the walk and other "legends" who did not reach the 100-game mark not getting a plaque.

"I think all Atletico players deserve a plaque, but we would not have space, we would need five walks," said club president Cerezo.

Like Bayern Munich's Allianz Arena, the roof of the stadium has lighting that will change colour, while the home changing rooms feature a club badge on the ceiling amid plush-looking upholstery.

The history behind the Estadio Cívitas Metropolitano

The stadium was inaugurated in 1994 and completely renovated in 2017, as a replacement of the Estadio Vicente Calderón . It has a capacity of 67,700 people.

On 2007, Atlético Madrid and Ayuntamiento de Madrid signed an agreement for which Atlético would move within 3 years to the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano (also known as Estadio Olímpico de Madrid, and more commonly by its knickname Estadio de La Peineta). After the 2016-17 season, The Vicente Calderón stadium was demolished, a park was built in its place, and Atlético moved to the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano to play there from the 2017-18 season onward.

At the beginning of the 2022-23 season the stadium was renamed Estadio Civitas Metropolitano.

The Club Atlético de Madrid, popularly known as Atlético, was founded in 1903. It is, along with the Real Madrid Fútbol Club, one of Madrid football clubs. The rivalry between both is quite fierce and the city is divided in half between Real Madrid and Atlético fans.

Probably one of the best in Europe, ‘Atlético’ are the most intensive and loyal supporters of the Spanish League. Fans generally dance and sing theme songs and chants during the whole match, and they do so whether the team is winning or losing, whether it’s raining or under an unbearable heat. It is absolutely impressive.

Few fans are noisier, more numerous, more loyal or funnier than Atlético’s. They always enjoy themselves. Even if they lose. Join them!

How to buy Atlético de Madrid tickets

The easiest way to get your Atlético de Madrid tickets is buying them online .

The purchasing process is very easy, but here’s a complete guide on how to buy Atlético de Madrid tickets in case you need it.

Here are the steps you should follow:

1. Start by checking the official calendar of matches and look for the dates when Atlético de Madrid plays home. Note that the final date and time of the match are confirmed only a few days before.

One more thing, the match usually takes place on a Saturday or Sunday, although La Liga also takes place on Fridays and Mondays. If the calendar obliges, matches may take place on other days of the week.

2. Next, pick the area of the Cívitas Metropolitano where you would like to seat. A seating chart will help you choose the one that will suit you best.

3. Final step: complete the purchasing process. Double check your personal details, particularly your email address to get your purchase confirmation email.

Purchase your tickets! No more waiting lines.

How to get to the Cívitas Metropolitano stadium

Being far away from the city center (around 10 km or 6.2 mi from the Puerta del Sol), it is not advisable to go there by foot.

Actually, the best way to get there is to catch the subway (line 7 stopping at Estadio Metropolitano or Las Musas stations) and walk from there.

You can also catch a bus (lines 38, 48, 140, 153, E2, N5 and N6).

Finally, you can catch a taxi. But before doing so, make sure you check the itinerary from your accommodation to the Cívitas Metropolitano stadium and you have printed some basic directions. Doing so you can avoid potential scams from the driver, the main one being a ride following a longer route.

However, plan your transport ahead of time. Atlético matches are extremely popular and it can be very difficult to reach the stadium as the match time approaches. It’s better waiting a bit longer at your seat for the match to begin than missing part of the action!
