5 Nagaland Tourist Places to Visit Including Headhunters

The state of Nagaland, in remote Northeast India , is divided into eight districts -- Dimapur, Kohima, Mokokchung, Mon, Phek, Tuensang, Wokha, and Zunheboto. Whether you venture to the villages just a few hours from Kohima, or to the far-off districts of Mon (famous for its Konyak headhunter tribe) and Mokokchung, you're sure to be engaged by the fascinating tribal village life in Nagaland. Colorful and unusual, it's not something that travelers are used to seeing!

There are 16 major tribes in untamed Nagaland, which shares a border with Myanmar. Relatively new to tourism, the people are curious, warm, informal -- and open to attracting visitors. You'll never feel alone when visiting villages in Nagaland. But which villages to visit? There are many different options depending on how much time you have and how much of Nagaland you want to see. The five popular tourist districts of Nagaland listed in this guide will give you some ideas of where to go in Nagaland.

Just don't expect people to be donned in tribal clothes everywhere, because modern life is already catching on in Nagaland! Most towns have concrete buildings -- these days, the traditional Nagaland is only in the villages.

Dimapur: Nagaland's Commercial Center

Dimapur is the commercial center of Nagaland, and the main entry point into the state. Nagaland's only airport is located there, with flights to and from Kolkata, and Guwahati. Dimapur is also the only city in Nagaland to be connected by train. There are direct trains to and from Delhi , Kolkata, Bangalore , and Chennai .

Once the capital of the ancient Kachari tribe, Dimapur has some mysterious 13th century ruins from the Kachari civilization, which ruled there until the Nagas came down from the hills and took over. These ruins, dotted about Rajbari Park, are perhaps the most interesting attraction in Dimapur although they're sadly neglected. There's also a Wednesday market close to the ruins, which provides an insightful look at Nagaland life. Familiar products such as spices, wicker goods, and vegetables are on sale. However, you'd best avoid the meat section unless you're keen on unconventional offerings such as dog meat.

Most people are quick to leave Dimapur. From Dimapur it's a two to three hour drive to Kohima. Or, if you're in a hurry, a 30 minute helicopter ride.

Kohima: Nagaland's Capital

Kohima, the state's capital city, is the second largest city in the state. It's well developed, with a population of about 100,000 people. Those who're interested in history will find a visit to the Kohima War Cemetery worthwhile. This cemetery is a tribute to the soldiers who laid down their lives pushing back the Japanese army during World War II. The bodies of around 1,100 British and 330 Indian soldiers are buried there.

Othewise, Kohima is best known for the annual Hornbill Festival , held at Kisama Heritage Village during the first week of December every year. This open-air museum can be visited daily from morning until evening, and contains a collection of traditional style tribal Nagaland buildings. It's about 10 kilometers from Kohima.

Razhu Pru is a top heritage homestay in Kohima

There are a couple of tribal villages in the district that are of interest as well..

Picturesque Khonoma village, home to the Angami tribe, is located around 20 kilometers from Kohima. The journey is a bone rattling two hour one because of the terrible condition of the road, yet the village draws visitors with its soul soothing vistas. Village homes cascade down hilltops to the valleys below. Get an intimate taste of village life by staying one of the rustic homestays there. Meru Homestay is perhaps the best one. It's popular and recommended. (Hosts: Khrieni and Megongui Meru. Phone: 0370-234 0061). The inhabitants of Khonoma place a lot of emphasis on wildlife conservation, and have established The Khonoma Nature Conservation and Tragopan Sanctuary. 

Touphema is an appealing overnight option for those traveling on to further districts, such as Mokokchung. You won't have to sacrifice too many comforts to have a cultural experience here -- the bathrooms even have Western toilets. The attractive tourist complex is positioned on a hillock that overlooks the village, with the hills providing a dramatic 360 degree backdrop. There are guides to show visitors around the village, and excellent cultural programs in the evenings. The village women will even share their recipes!

Mokokchung: Land of the Ao Tribe

Mokokchung town is the third most important urban hub in Nagaland. It takes about six hours to get there from the Nagaland capital, Kohima. The district is home to the Ao tribe, which holds their celebratory Moatsu Festival during the first week of May each year.

To catch the festival head to Chuchuyimlang village, an hour and a half drive from Mokokchung town. The location of this village, high on a hill, is its best feature. Each house in the village looks out on to an unending lush chain of hills, which change color with the rising sun. The tourist lodge, while situated away from the village, is perfectly positioned to receive the evening sunlight.

Mopungchuket, positioned closer to Mokokchung town on good roads, is perhaps the best kept village in Nagaland. Often referred to as Ao heartland, you can absorb yourself in tribal culture here. Every house opens onto a well tended garden, and the people are accustomed to visitors and welcome a chat. Cultural programs are held in an amphitheater overlooking the lake. The tourism department has also overhauled the tourist accommodations in the village, and there are now a number of cottages built to resemble a morung (traditional communal house). The cottages are equipped with double beds, attached bathrooms, TV, running water, and even room service! Indigenous cuisine is offered, and interested visitors can even try cooking their own meals.

Mon: Land of Konyak Headhunters

The Mon district of Nagaland, land of the Konyaks (infamous for being former headhunters), offers the best opportunity for finding semi-traditional villages and tattooed warriors in loincloths. The main attraction in Mon is the remote geographical location, and the opportunity it affords to get a glimpse of a life far removed from ours.

The Mon landscape has the densest landscape in Nagaland, and the plains of Assam can be delightfully viewed from high up in the hills. The district's largest village, Longwa, is situated right on the Myanmar border. In fact, the chief's house is bisected longitudinally by the border. Visitors to the village, who must stop by his house, will have the strange experience of sitting near the hearth with half their body in Myanmar and the other half still in India. It's not the only unusual thing -- the chief also has dozens of wives! The chief's house, filled with dubious trophies of various animal skulls, is also quite a sight.

If you visit Mon during the beginning of April, you'll be able to witness Konyaks all over Mon celebrating the Aoleong Monyu festival . Undertaken to welcome spring and pray for bountiful harvests, this happy week-long festival has plenty of feasting and sacrifices to appease the divine forces that watch over the farms.

There are two ways of getting to Mon -- from Kohima along the eastern extreme of Nagaland, and via Jorhat in Assam. The latter route is longer, but it has excellent roads. However, those with a thirst for adventure should be sure to travel via Naginimora in Mon and Wakching in the Tuesang district of Nagaland. There road changes from monotonous concrete to a tyer-marked trail. However, due to its remoteness, the best way to see Mon is on a tour.

One of the best places to stay in the area is the boutique Konyak Tea Retreat, on a tea estate. The host is the great granddaughter of a tattooed headhunter, and she's actively involved in researching and documenting the various tattoo patterns of her tribe.

Wokha: Organic Fruit and the Lotha Tribe

The four hour drive from Kohima to neighboring Wokha is a picturesque one. Terraced fields, bright foliage, blazing flowers, and tiny towns shrouded in mist are all stunning sights that reveal themselves on the journey.

Wokha is the land of the Lotha tribe. The district is known for its healthy, fertilizer and pesticide free oranges and pineapples. One of the interesting features of Wokha are the ancient stone monoliths, erected by tribal elders, that dot the hillsides.

For a memorable laidback rural experience, venture an hour from Wokha town to the tourist village above Riphyim. There's an old colonial cottage, dating back to when horses were housed at Wokha during World War II, that's been transformed into an inspection bungalow and is worth a visit. But the real joy for nature lovers are the countless trails that thread through the surrounding forest. Some lead to seasonal farms, and others are woodcutter trails that don't lead to any particular destination at all. Those who enjoy a long walk should go up to the viewpoint up and away from the tourist lodge, which rewards with a spectacular view of a dam on the Doyan River.

The tourist lodge in Riphyim is also quite unforgettable. It's precariously positioned close to the precipice of a hill, which provides magnificent uncluttered views from the rooms. A wide variety of traditional and mainstream food is on offer, and there's a space for bonfires during the sunset.

1. Dzukou Valley

Longkhum is a village located 17 km southwest of Mokokchung, in Nagaland that is situated at an altitude of 1846 m above sea level.

It is like a canvas with vivid landscape photography. Here you can enjoy the sightseeing of the lush green forest of the Naga Hills, including the undulating hills around from this spot.

Located 14 km from Dimapur city,  Chumukedima is a village that lies on the foothills of the Naga Hills. Situated in the foothills of Naga Hills, Chumukedima served as the first district headquarters of the then Naga Hills district of Assam during the 19th century of British rule.

Several waterfalls adorn the beautiful hills of the Chumukedima village, an ancient village near Dimapur which is now being promoted as a must-visit tourist attraction.

Tuophema Tourist Village is located 41 km from Kohima has been modeled around the ethnic tourism model where you will be offered modern and hygienic accommodation in traditional huts in an ethnic setting and can experience the local culture and cuisine.

This village is the epitome of natural beauty and also renowned for the glorious celebrations of various tribal festivals. The famous Moastu Festival lasts for 3 full days and commences on 1st May. The roads to Chuchuyimlang are well connected and take you through some breathtaking views.

22. Chenloisho Village

Located near the international border of Indian and Myanmar,  Chenloisho Village  is one of the biggest villages in the Chen area whose primary tourist attraction of this village is a museum.

This museum houses different types of ornaments that are found across the region. There are all types of pieces of jewelry worn by the tribal people are displayed here and is quite interesting. There is also a place called Waloo where human skulls dating back to the headhunting days are displayed.

23. Kohima War Cemetery

Kohima War Cemetery  is a memorial dedicated to soldiers of the 2nd British Division of the Allied Forces who died in the Second World War at Kohima, the capital of Nagaland, India, in April 1944.

The soldiers died on the battleground of Garrison Hill in the tennis court area of the Deputy Commissioner’s residence.  This spot is a must-visit as it tells people more about our ancient history. To prevent the Burma attack, the Japanese army attacked the British army who was then stationed in North East India in March 1944. The cemetery is well kept with lush green, mowed lawns, and well-groomed flowers.

The epitaph on the cemetery wall reads? When you go home, tell them of us and say That for their tomorrow, we gave our today…..?

On the 18 plots of the cemetery, there are 1421 slabs erected in memory of soldiers who were killed in the battle of Kohima. The soldiers were from UK, Japan, East and West Africa, and Burma.

A visit to the cemetery leaves you absolutely fascinated by the courageous tales of the martyrs who rest here.

A hill station with good green cover, the state is rich in biodiversity with many flora and fauna, and the people take pride in its rich cultural heritage .

With an area of 16,579 sq.km and population of 1,980,602 (as per 2011 Census of India), the state is home to 17 major tribes and sub-tribes with distinct customs, language and attires. Though the Hornbill Festival, an annual event celebrated from December 1 to the 10 th , has become the biggest crowd puller and a tourist attraction over the years, each of the communities in the state have their own traditional festivals, thus the moniker “Land of festivals”.

While it is difficult to list tourist destinations, as the topography is similar across the state, some places have become hotspots for both local visitors and those from outside the state. But for the adventurous, it won’t be anything like spending time with the villagers and getting close to relatively undisturbed nature in the rural areas. Nagaland offers both – for the adventurous and non adventurous.

Here are top 10 tourist places / destinations (in no particular order) to visit in Nagaland:

• Dimapur: The town may be more of a transit point and a commercial hub for Nagaland state than a tourist destination but it has some cool places like the ‘Kachari Ruins’, which dates back to the 13th century. Other places one can visit include Diezephe Craft Village, Green Park, Rangapahar Reserve Forest, Nagaland Zoological Park, North East Zone Cultural Centre, Handloom and Handicrafts Emporium, and Agri Expo. It is the only place in the state with air and rail connectivity.

2. Kohima: Being the capital of the state, Kohima houses the Vidhan Sabha (Legislative Assembly), Secretariat and several other major government facilities. It has a beautiful landscape with a mix of modern and village look. Besides popular spots like World War II Cemetery and The Cathedral of Kohima, there are several tourist hotspots like Kisama Heritage Village, Khonoma Green Village, Japfu Peak, Tuophema Tourist Village etc. in the district.

3. Dzukou Valley: This picturesque valley is located at an altitude of 2,438.4 metre in Nagaland-Manipur border and about 30 km south of Kohima. A trekker’s delight, the valley is home to endemic lily and several other flora and fauna. It attracts most visitors during the flowering season, from the month of June to September.

4. Doyang: Situated in Wokha district, Doyang is a major tourist attraction with a beautiful landscape. It is home to state’s well-known hydro electricity project and the Amur falcon adorns its skies between October and November every year in thousands. It’s an ideal place for people who love camping, boating and angling.

5. Khezhakeno village: It is a historical village in Phek district known for being the first settlement site of the foremost Naga ancestral forefather ‘Koza’. A flat stone called Tso Tawo (spirit stone), believed by the forefathers to generate double-fold if a basket of paddy is parched in the sun on the stone slab, also located in the village.

6. Mt. Saramati: With a height of 3,826 m, Mt. Saramati, located near Thanamir village in Kiphire district, is the highest peak in Nagaland. It is a prominent peak in Southeast Asia with a variety of flora and fauna.

7. International Trade Centre (ITC): The Meluri sub-division in Phek district is home to Shilloi lake (Lütsam village), which is associated with many legends. The sub-division also has international trade centres at Phokhungri and Avankhung, where many Nagas in Myanmar can be seen shopping.

8. Mokokchung: Home of the Ao Naga, the district has popular tourist spots like Mopungchuket, which was declared ‘rural tourism village’ by the government of Nagaland in 2007, for its historical, mythological and cultural assets; and Longkhum village, believed to be the resting place of a dead person’s spirit before their onward journey to paradise.

9. Mon: The district has several villages that have Second World War remains and rock inscriptions. Shangnyu is a prominent village where the Angh’s house believed to be more than 500 years old is located. Longwa is another interesting village, where the Angh’s house is located lies half in India half in Myanmar but the administration falls under the village chief. Besides beautiful landscape, visitors can check Shangphan Wildlife Sanctuary, Veda Peak and Chalsoise village where human skulls belonging to the head-hunting days are displayed in a place called Waloo.

10. Noklak: Formally inaugurated as a new district in January 2021, Noklak is blessed with mesmerizing landscape and rich cultural heritage. The Indo-Myanmar border pillar 146 is located in the International Trade Centre (ITC) Dan, the last village of the district. Other places of interest include Pangsha, a historic village that houses Village Guards Museum; Chipur village, which is known for its complex cave system and daunting cliff that adventurers can explore; and scenic landscape of Choklangan village which is located between the mountain of khulia king, kenking, and enshao king.

I hope you had organized your stay here, if not better book at Hotel Lake Shilloi as this hotel is good in providing modern lifestyle to which you can accommodate easily within your budget.This hotel is in Dimapur City, from here you have access to Taxi & Rail Route. Dimapur Market is good if you are looking for Clothes as its a good destination for a good Bargain.When it comes to sight seeing you would need to travel a Lot as from dimapur Taxi/bus station you will get a lot of yellow cabs sharing basis & hire to mokokchung & kohima. In two days time I would suggest you go to Kohima the Capital of Nagaland, whether is awesome & there you can visit a lot of places like war cemetery,handicrafts market,Old secretariat house etc.I would suggest if you have a local along with you it would be great if they can take you the max places in two days time. The weather places are very beautiful to which you need to time to explore,a visit to Kohima would be more fruitful as you can have a hint of local culture food & tribes.

We, i.e., myself and my 5-6 friends, not than 7 persons in total wish to visit Mon and surrounding tribal villages for photography purpose. We are ameature photographers who love to capture landscape, people and life. We want to spend maximum 5 nights in that area. We will go from Kolkata. Located at an altitude of 897.64 meters above sea level is the land of Konyak Nagas. They were one of the greatest warriors among Nagas and practised headhunting during the historic times. To kickstart your trip for the day, and get an insight into the history, drive to Longwa village which is on the border of India and Burma. Wander around the village and visit Morung where you can visit a Naga boy’s dormitory that served as an acculturation and learning place during the headhunting times. This will truly a surreal part of your offbeat itinerary to Nagaland.

Proceed to a gun-making place where the Konyak Nagas traditionally manufactured guns and also pay a visit to the craftsmen’s house to see the beautiful wood carvings and appreciate the artistic skills of the Nagas. You can return to Mon and have lunch. The next leg of your journey will be to Hang Phoi village to meet the Headhunters with tattooed faces. You will get a more realistic insight into the Naga culture. After this offbeat experience in Nagaland, you can stay the night at Mon.

Day 4: Mon to Tuensang

After breakfast, drive to the district of Tuensang which is about 6 hours away, bordering Myanmar. It is the state ‘s easternmost district, and the largest. The District is home to tribal groups like Chang, Sangtam, Khiamniungan, Yimchunger, Phom Naga and others. Each tribe has a different culture, different traditions and different festivals and witnessing them will be a winner in your offbeat Nagaland itinerary.

Day 5: Explore Tuensang

Spend the day exploring Tuesang ‘s various villages. You may find several Mithun in this area (a semi-domesticated animal) that is a cross between water buffalo and a cow. Explore villages such as Noklak which is inhabited by the Khiamniungan tribe. The village is popular for its cane work, handicrafts and artefacts.

Another village, Longtrok, finds the ancient ruins of the civilisations of Tsongliyangti and Chungliyangti, which is marked by six legendary stones. Admire the history of this place before heading back to your hotel and staying the night.

Day 6: Tuensang to Touphema

Proceed to Touphema Tourist Village which is a long drive (8-9 hrs drive) away. On the way, stop to see the culture of the Lotha Tribe at Longsa village in Wokha district. Lothas are known for their vibrant dances and folk songs. Unlike other Nagas, in the olden days, the Lothas practised headhunting. You can then check into your hotel at Touphema.

Day 7: Explore Touphema

Visit the village of Touphema in the morning. Touphema offers exquisite traditional Naga life in nature’s lap. This village is set up to preserve and showcase the traditional Naga lifestyle.  There is another village called Khonoma which is populated by the Angami tribe. After you finish exploring these villages, you can head back to your hotel for a checkout. The next leg of your journey would be to Khonoma for another offbeat experience in your Nagaland itinerary.

Day 8: Khonoma to Kohima

Trek to Dzukou Valley in the morning and witness Flowers Valley. The valley stands above sea level at an altitude of 2500 metres. The entire valley is full of flowers during the months of March and April. After witnessing the breathtaking beauty, trek back to Khonoma in the afternoon, catch a quick refreshment and drive to Kohima.

Day 9: Kohima, Dimapur to Kolkata

Once the capital of the ancient Kachari tribe, Dimapur has some mysterious ruins of the Kachari civilization from the 13th century. These ruins which are scattered around Rajbari Park, are perhaps the most interesting attraction in Dimapur.

There is also a market near the ruins on Wednesday that offers an informative insight into the life of Nagas. There are common items on sale, such as spices, wicker goods and vegetables. However, you can avoid the meat section as they sell bizarre types of meat like dog meat which you might not be very comfortable with. From Dimapur, it’s a two to three-hour drive to Kohima or even a 30-minute helicopter ride can be taken. You can spend the night at leisure in Kohima.

Your final day in Nagaland will end with a drive to Dimapur Airport to board the flight to Kolkata and take your flight back home. Don’t you want to visit these offbeat places in Nagaland already? This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Karen Edwards , who blogs about her family's travels around the world. The following has been edited for length and clarity.

Since 2000, I've visited 93 countries and 57 of them have been with my four children who are all under the age of 10.

I am a nurse by background, but I have been blogging about traveling with my husband and kids since 2014. I cover a lot of off-the-beaten-track destinations and write itineraries for places I've been to, explaining how they work for families with children.

Many popular family destinations tend to be overcrowded. They're usually the ones that get a lot of media exposure or are shown in viral videos on social media. In America, it'd be places like Disneyland in California or Disney World in Florida, while for Europeans, it might be some of the Spanish resort areas.

Although my family and I have visited these places, we have always come away disappointed. They often lack educational experiences, feeling like pointless affairs.

I think traveling to underrated spots makes trips feel more exclusive and you can learn more about the cultures of the countries you visit — it also keeps you away from tourist traps.

We went on a safari tour in Tanzania

Our family visited Tanzania in 2019 in collaboration with a tourism brand. We were there for 12 days.

Our flights to the country were kind of expensive; we paid about $9,000 for our then-family of four, including a stop in Zanzibar at the end of the trip for a few days. However, overall, the entire trip didn't end up costing us that much.

We had some really unique experiences in Tanzania. We went to Mto Wa Mbu village , which is beneath a banana plantation, and we went on a safari tour in its Lake Manyara National Park .

Interestingly, Tanzania is one of the few places in the world where lions are known to climb trees. I remember seeing them sit in tall trees; it was quite unusual, but my kids really enjoyed how close they were to the animals.

Throughout our trip, we actually felt like we were experiencing life in Tanzania. Our campsite was on a river's edge in the depths of nature. It was nice not to feel surrounded by tourists.

My kids fell in love with Abu Dhabi's culture

Many people mistakenly believe that Dubai is a country, but in reality, it's a city in the United Arab Emirates, with Abu Dhabi being its capital.

My family and I moved to Abu Dhabi in 2021 and lived there for 18 months. The city does have a lot of similarities to glitzy and glam Dubai , but you get a more down-to-earth experience.

There are amazing festivals in Abu Dhabi where they display their culture in different formats, whether that be through local food or crafts. It does feel authentic because it's usually mainly locals participating and organizing them.

The city is also 1.5 hours away from Al Ain, which sits at the foot of  Jebel Hafeet , one of the tallest mountains in the region. Along the way up, you'll find many ancient artifacts, such as beehive huts, which have been there for thousands of years. At the top, you can watch incredible sunsets.

The city also has the Al Ain Oasis , which uses an ancient irrigation system. It has these beautiful paved pathways that look like cobbled streets.

My kids loved Abu Dhabi and are constantly asking me to go back — they really liked all the cultural celebrations.

We love Sri Lanka so much, we're building a villa there

In 2022, my family and I moved to Sri Lanka from Abu Dhabi. We thought we'd have more family time here, and it was going to be an affordable place to live.

We're building a family-friendly villa here that should be completed by August. The area where we are building has a lot of nice cafes, bars, and restaurants nearby.

Overall, Sri Lanka is an amazing country that has so many diverse experiences. There are tea plantations, mountains, and beaches. As for wildlife, their national parks have loads of elephants and leopards.

On one occasion, we went on a safari boat tour to an isolated national park where we watched elephants swim across a lake and onto a tiny island. It was amazing.

The beaches in Sri Lanka are pristine. They have beautiful scenery with swaying coconut palm trees, clear water, and perfect waves. Our favorite is Kabalana Beach .

Because we're always on the beach, my children have learned how to surf. I think it's the most fun thing that we do on the weekends as a family.

The ski resorts and spas are amazing in Andorra

We visited Andorra in 2018 for about six days. It's a tiny country nestled in the Pyrenees between Spain. It's a two-hour drive from Barcelona and three hours from Toulouse, France.

The city has a unique fusion of cultures, though I think Catalonian is the strongest influence. During our trip, my family and I toured many ancient churches.

We also went to some amazing spas and resorts in Andorra. The hotel and ski system there is really family-friendly.

During our visit to the Grandvalira ski resort , my daughter learned how to ski and my husband got to snowboard — the resort has a kindergarten at the foot of its mountain, where kids can play or ski.

Andorra also has amazing spa facilities that are suitable for families and are sectioned off for different age groups.

Our trip was in collaboration with Andorra's tourism board, but I feel like it wasn't overly expensive in comparison to some other places around the world.

I was treated like family in Macedonia

Macedonia is a Balkan country just north of Greece. I haven't been there with children, but I wouldn't have any issues taking my kids there.

It has many beautiful small villages and it's great for skiing too.

The country is also home to one of the oldest and deepest lakes in Europe named Lake Orchid, which borders Albania. There's this beautiful, small village on the lake that has charming restaurant and a lovely atmosphere for relaxing and enjoying good food.

I visited the country in 2008, and then again in 2012 with my then-boyfriend and now-husband.

The first time I visited, I went with two girlfriends, and we were backpackers. We arrived in the middle of the night by bus and had no idea what we were doing. The bus driver just made a call, and a stranger came and picked us up in his car — I thought I was going to die.

The opposite happened. He took us back to his home with his family, and we stayed there with them for a few days. We ended up extending the trip because he and his family were so amazing.

They didn't speak a word of English, and we couldn't speak a word of their language either. We'd just gesture at each other, and they'd give us food and red wine.

I just totally fell in love with them and their country.

CINCINNATI —  The  football  and basketball recruiting front got some news over the weekend as  UC football  landed in the top 10 for three-star 2025 wide receiver Tristan Norman out of Carver (Alabama).

According to 247Sports , Norman is the 605th-ranked player nationally and the 94th-ranked wide receiver.

The 6-0, 167-pound talent is down to Cincinnati, Kentucky, Auburn, Georgia, Arkansas, Tulane, Georgia Tech, Troy, Vanderbilt, and Texas A&M.

On the basketball front, Cincinnati offered five-star 2027 shooting guard Ryan Hampton out of Rockwall-Heath (Texas).

The 6-5, 175-pound dynamo is ESPN's fifth-ranked prospect and top shooting guard in the country.

He holds offers from Arizona State and Auburn.

Cincinnati also offered four-star 2025 Duncanville (Texas) forward BJ Davis-Ray.

According to 247Sports , Davis-Ray is the 76th-ranked player nationally and the 18th-best small forward.

The 6-6, 187-pound talent holds 13 other offers from schools like Houston and Kansas.

You’ve played some of the best golf courses in the United States . Now, you’re looking to pack your clubs, rally some friends, and hit the links on an international golf trip. But which parts of the world boast the best collection of golf courses?

From Latin America to the South Pacific — and, of course, Scotland — here’s a list of seven international destinations perfect for a golf trip.

1. Scotland: The Birthplace of Golf

[+] famous golfers have traditionally posed for photographs on this bridge at the end of their tournament rounds, thanking the crowds for their support. The Royal & Ancient clubhouse can be seen towards the left of the background.

The Scottish seaside town of St. Andrews is known around the world as the birthplace of golf, and the iconic Old Course headlines most golfers’ bucket lists. Book a stay at the golf-inspired Rusacks St Andrews, where rooms come with views of the hallowed turf.

Even if you can’t score a tee time at the Old Course, there’s plenty more courses beckoning. In fact, Scotland has more golf courses per person than anywhere else in the world. From the links of Fife to courses along the dunes of Aberdeenshire’s coast, the country has more than 550 courses.

Scotland’s weather is known to fluctuate, but the golf season is typically April to September.

2. Ireland: A Links Paradise

Ireland is nicknamed the “green of dreams” and the island is home to more than 400 golf clubs. A third of the world’s natural links courses are here, and more than 240,000 golfers make the pilgrimage to Ireland each year to play on the unforgiving fairways.

In County Limerick, Adare Manor is a coveted stay for golfers. The championship golf course designed by golf architect Tom Fazio will host the 2027 Ryder cup.

While most courses are open all year round, the best time for Ireland golf trips is from April to October. In peak summer, it stays light out until 10 p.m., which means you can play a couple of rounds and make the most of your golf vacation.

3. Fiji: Luxury Private Island Greens

Fiji is a draw for all types of vacationers, from honeymooners to scuba divers. But it’s also a golfer’s paradise in the South Pacific, with more than a dozen courses scattered across the islands and stunning fairways lined with palm trees.

For those coming for golf, Viti Levu, the main island, is home to three championship courses: Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course, which is located at the InterContinental Resort and comes with Pacific Ocean views, Denarau Golf & Racquet Club, and The Pearl South Pacific Golf Course.

Fun fact: The country has even produced one of the world’s top golfers, Vijay Singh, who fell in love with the game at the Nadi Airport Golf Course.

4. New Zealand: Dramatic Scenery

In New Zealand, golf is the sport with the highest participation among both men and women. The country has more than 400 golf courses, and the dramatic landscapes — from craggy, isolated coastlines tracing the greens to soaring mountains in the alpine areas — make it one of the most idyllic destinations for golfers.

Renowned architect Tom Doak has said “no country has seen its golf courses improve more over the past 20 years than New Zealand.” One of his famous New Zealand courses is Cape Kidnappers, which is perched above the ocean on clifftops, and built on ridge-and-valley landscape.

A 90 minute drive from Auckland (or 25 minutes via helicopter), Te Arai Links , which has two links golf courses along the coastline is also a sought-after destination. One course was designed by Doak, and the other is from Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw. In between tee times, the area is known for its surf breaks and lively nearby market towns, Mangawhai and Matakana, as well as its vineyards and olive groves.

October through April is considered high season, and golfers will pay less the other times of year.

5. Mexico: Mountain, Desert And Ocean Landscapes

Los Cabos and the Baja Peninsula have long dominated as one of the best golf destinations in not just Latin America, but the world, thanks to its mountain-desert-ocean landscape, gentle sea breezes, and a collection of cacti-studded courses designed by some of the world’s greatest golf architects, like Jack Nicklaus, Tom Fazio, Greg Norman and Robert Trent Jones, Jr.

In Loreto, which is on the Eastern coast of Baja California Peninsula, golfers can tee off in a UNESCO World Heritage site when they play a round at Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto by Danzante Bay, which overlooks the turquoise waters of the Sea of Cortez. Travelers can book packages Unlimited Golf or Spa that comes with unlimited rounds for three days.

Golf continues to grow and get better throughout Mexico, with more than 200 courses to play. Beyond the Baja Peninsula, some other top golf spots in Mexico include the courses dotting the Pacific Coastline and in the Riviera Maya, like El Camaleón, an 18-hole, Greg Norman-designed course that moves through tropical jungle, mangroves, and past freshwater canals. It’s also the first PGA Tour Course in Latin America.

6. Vietnam: A Fast-Growing Golf Destination

For golfers looking for the next ‘it’ destination, turn your attention to Vietnam, where some of the world’s best golf architects are designing courses in the mountains, jungles, and along its coastline. Before 2020, there were about 80 golf courses in Vietnam, many attached to luxury resorts. By 2025, more than 200 courses will be built out.

Golfers can find year-round golf in Vietnam, heading into the highlands like Dalat for a cool mist and mountain breezes and hitting and booking tee times in Ho Chi Minh City and Southern Vietnam throughout the year. November to April is dry and cool in Northern Vietnam, and the same goes for Central Vietnam from February to May.

Hoina Shores Golf Club , designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., is a must-play for any golf enthusiast visiting Vietnam. It’s located within the $4 billion Hoiana Casino and Resort development on the Vietnamese coast south of Danang.

7. Mauritius: Bucket List Golf Destination

Mauritius is known for its stunning beaches and lush rainforests and unofficial world wonders like the Chamarel Seven Colored Earth Geopark, a sand dune bursting with colors. But this island in the Indian Ocean also has a history of golf. The tourism office claims that in 1844, when it was under British rule, Mauritius was the third country in the world to be introduced to the sport and Gymkhana Golf Club was the fourth country club in the world where golf was played

Today, Mauritius has 10 18-hole courses and three 9-hole golf courses, including the bucket-list worthy Iles aux Cerfs Golf Club at Shangri-La Le Touessrok, Mauritius . Golfers take a complimentary boat shuttle to the golf course where 18 holes come with scenic ocean views. The resort’s second course is Anahita Golf Club, which is set on a former sugar plantation and backed by mountains and fringed by a lagoon.
