Insight Into Jharkhand’s Secret Hill Station, Netarhat!

Netarhat is an aesthetic space, surrounded by low hills, forests, and hilly springs, lest to be not known so far. Well, this space was initially the residing homeland for several tribes , until of course it was converted into a hill station by British colonizers. However, Netarhat is far from colonizing memories today and is also referred to as the ‘Queen of Chhota Nagpur’. This hill station is much acclaimed for its aesthetics, rejuvenating essence, and a public residential school that was established in 1954. Moreover, Netarhat is the perfect weekend getaway from Ranchi, the state capital, about 150km away by road.

How To Reach, Where To Stay!

Well, the process of reaching Netarhat from the plains is rather fun. The beautiful hills are showered with the gleaming presence of lush green sal, Palash, and manhwa trees. The steep hill road (‘ghat’ road) cuts through the forests, runs past some sharp bends, finally steeping into a plateau on which nestles Netarhat at a height of 1,250 meters, (surrounded by cypress and pine trees). A humongous gate welcomes you to the town.

The tourist lodge run by state tourism is indeed the best place to stay at Netarhat. The lodge is called ‘Prabhat Vihar’ for it rather maneuvers the best view of the sunrise across the hills. This place is the least crowded and therefore the best choice you can make at Netarhat.

Places To See

  • The Netarhat Vidyalaya (a residential school) is about 2km from the tourist lodge. You can also check out the old British building, the Chalet House which is less than a kilometer from the school. The Jharkhand Government is meaning to give away the building to the school authorities for restoration purposes.
  • About 2km from the Netarhat bus stand is a dam built during the British period. This place forms a stupendous picnic spot for tourists during winters.
  • Magnolia Point/ Suicide point is where you can catch the best sunset view. For early birds,  the Koel river holds some promising views and aesthetics. The river can be seen meandering through the verdant hills below. However, there are several restrictions here as of course, it’s a suicide point.
  • The hills surrounding Netarhat are blessed with hilly springs and waterfalls. The waterfall, Upper Ghagri  ls is about 6km from Netarhat. Lower Ghagri is another 4km away from here. The area has many orchards that are blooming with pear fruit. Also, both the waterfalls require you to walk and not drive.
  • You can always drive down to the Lodh waterfalls for a longer outing. The Lodh waterfalls are said to be the highest waterfall of Jharkhand, about 62km from Netarhat (via Mahuadanr town). It is also known as Burhan Ghagh (that is the local term for waterfalls). The waterfalls jump down over 140 meters into a pool that disappears in the forest. It is advisable to be cautious since the rocks can be slippery. Also, avoid going too near the base of the falls.

Things To Keep In Mind

  • Netarhat is about 156km west of Ranchi, the nearest airport and rail station.
  • Tourists often like to combine a visit to Netarhat with Betla National Park (about 115km away via Mahuadanr town).
  • Seemingly, since Netarhat is rather an off-beat tourist destination, it is advisable not to stand long in deserted areas even when you are traveling in a group.
  • Cell phone connectivity is poor to non-existent.
  • Ask for permission before taking photographs of tribal people.
  • Best time to visit: November to March.
  • Woolens required in winter.
  • Carry mosquito/insect repellents and essential medicines.

Well, there’s not one but a thousand reasons as to why you should visit this fabulous hill station. Netarhat is rather quiet and calming at dusk, once tourists recede back to their lodgings. Enjoy the serenity of this hill station in Jharkhand and try to visit it ASAP!!

6 Enchanting Places in Netarhat For All The Wanderlust Travelers (2024)

Jharkhand is one of the individual states in India. Apart from having some important industrial cities, the state is also filled with quite famous sites among tourists. Netarhat is one such place in Jharkhand that is extremely beautiful. Netarhat is commonly known as “Queen of Chotanagpur” as it is the most popular hill station in the region. This mesmerizingly gorgeous site is located at the height of 3700 feet and is surrounded by mountains, breathtakingly beautiful forests, and magnificent greenery.

Throughout the town, you will find many gardens or orchards that are landscaped quite expertly. During the time of British reign in India, Netarhat was an important place for a vacation for the British officers. They were the first people to convert this tribal village into a hill station. As the town is situated 150 km from Ranchi , it can mainly be reached by renting a car from there. Now, Netarhat is also famous for the residential school. This school is quite well-known, and students from all around India reside there.

There are some tourist lodges located in the town where travelers stay for a few days.

Most people from Eastern India prefer to spend their weekends in Netarhat. While exploring the city, you will notice Palash, Mahua, and Sal trees located at every corner. The lush greenery of the thick forests in Netarhat makes it so serene and enchanting. By staying for a few days over, you will genuinely feel rejuvenated. As the tourist site is located in a remote area, you might not find a good connection on your cell phone. That is why always be prepared with the basic first aid kits while exploring the town.

No matter how you visit Netarhat, you will have to travel from Ranchi. Both the nearest railway station and airport are located in the capital. Even though the town has a comfortable climate throughout the year, you will enjoy it the most during the winter. In case you are excited about going to Netarhat, read this blog. Here, we will provide you with the details of the best places to visit in Netarhat.

6 Enchanting Places in Netarhat For All The Wanderlust Travelers

The places included in the following list are wonderful and famous among travelers from all over the world. If you visit Netarhat, make it a point to see all of them.

1. Lower Ghaghri Falls

6 Enchanting Places in Netarhat For All The Wanderlust Travelers

The forest is so dense that you will find it pretty dark. Even if you visit there in the daytime, you will find little sunlight over there. Many people trek to reach Lower Ghaghri falls while others see there by cars. The waterfall is situated around 10 km from the main city center of Netarhat. You will easily find auto-rickshaws or rented cars to take you to the waterfall.

Address:  Jharkhand 829204.

2. Sunrise Point

If you are a lover of sunrises, then the Sunrise point in Netarhat will not disappoint you. This site is located quite close to the Netarhat bus stand and right in front of Hotel Parbhat Vihar. When you see the sunrise from this point for the first time, you will genuinely be in love with Netarhat. The transition of the atmosphere from dark to light to reddish will give you goosebumps. As the sunrise occurs amid the gorgeous hills, the entire scenery becomes even more spectacular.

Place To Visit in Netarhat-Sunrise Point

Many people do not know that much about Netarhat. But once they see the sunrise from the spot, they will realize it is one of India’s most beautiful hill stations.

Address:  Netarhat bus stand, Jharkhand 829204.

3. Upper Ghaghri Waterfall

You have already read about the Lower Ghaghri Waterfall, now get to know about its twin, the Upper Ghaghri fall. This waterfall is located 4 km from the heart of Netarhat and is another mesmerizingly beautiful place situated over there. You will be surprised to know that this waterfall is not natural. It is formed from the overflowing water of the nearby Netarhat Dam. But the region surrounding this fall is entirely delightful.

Best Place To Visit in Netarhat-Upper Ghaghri Waterfall

Unlike the lower Ghaghri fall, this waterfall is not surrounded by dark forests. Instead, it is located amid the green valley of Netarhat. From the foot of the fall, you will get to see the grand hills making the entire region gorgeous. Most people prefer this spot as a place to have a nice picnic. You will have a great time with your friends or family, surrounded by tranquility and bliss.

Address:  Netarhat, Jharkhand 822119.

4. Magnolia Sunset Point

After witnessing the mind-blowing sunrise from the Sunrise point of Netarhat, it is time to see the majestic sunset at Magnolia point. This site is located 10 km from the town of Netarhat. Usually, people go to this spot after completing their sight seeing tour. As the sunset happens by the Vindhya mountains’ lap, you will fall in love with this site. When the sun sets behind the hills, the precise time is something to withhold for the rest of your lives.

Top Place To Visit in Netarhat-Magnolia Sunset Point

You might be wondering why the place is named “Magnolia.” It is due to an incident that happened during the British era of India. A young woman named Magnolia jumped off from the cliff after being in love with a local shepherd boy. The point was named after her by the local government at that time. Keeping aside the site’s morbid history, Magnolia Sunset’s point is one of the best places to visit in Netarhat.

Timing:  4 am to 7.31 pm.

5. Sadni Waterfall

Located at a distance of 35 km from Netarhat, Sadni waterfall is situated near the Rajadera village of Jharkhand. The altitude of the falls is around 200 feet. After cascading from the said height, this waterfall flows along with the Sankh river. You will be surprised to know that there used to be a diamond mine in the location of the waterfall many years ago. Even though the mine existed in the seventeenth century, it is still pretty amazing to wonder that the spot was once one of Jharkhand’s essential places.

As gorgeous hills and beautiful forests surround the waterfall, you will be in awe of its beauty. You will have to rent a car to go there from your hotel in Netarhat.

Address:  Rajadera, Jharkhand 835218.

6. Koel View Point

You might have noticed that every hill station in India has a viewpoint that offers a panoramic view of the beautiful surroundings. Koel View Point is that place for Netarhat. This site is located only 2 km from the bus stand and is splendid. You will get to see the flowing river, gorgeous hill locks, tiny villages, and others quite vividly from the viewpoint. The hues you will see while getting the panoramic view will be in your mind for several years.

Many people also visit the Koel Viewpoint at night. Especially during the night with the full moon, you will notice that the view is even more enchanting. The river will also be otherworldly if you visit there at night. If you love to capture photographs, do not forget to bring your camera while going to Koel Viewpoint.

All the spots included in this blog are popular in Netarhat. Without these sites, the hill station will not be the same. Even though Netarhat is still not immensely popular among travelers, that is a positive point. While exploring this site, you will not bump into random people or eat in crowded restaurants. As the town is quite secluded, you will get to spend a few days in solitude with your loved ones.

The best part about the trip is that all the blog spots can be explored in a day. Usually, by booking a sightseeing package, you will get to see all of them in a day. For the rest of the days, you can spend your time leisurely soaking in the enthralling beauty of the surroundings.

Two of our relatives came to visit us for a few days recently and we planned a quick getaway to Netarhat. Reaching Netarhat from the plains is part of the fun. It’s a smooth road through the paddy fields up to Lohardaga.

Driving to Netarhat

netarhat tourist spot images

The four-hour drive was nice and we stocked beer cans from Ranchi before we started the journey and then again replenished our stocks at Lohardaga.

netarhat tourist spot images

Then slowly the road climbs up after we crossed Ghaghra.

netarhat tourist spot images

The rolling hills are covered with Sal, Palash and Mahuwa trees. The steep hill road (ghati) cuts through the forests, runs past some sharp bends, finally flattening into a pat on which perches Netarhat, amidst cypress and pine trees.

The Destination Netarhat

As we reached up, a gate welcomed us at Netarhat. Located in the Pat region of the Chotanagpur Plateau, which covers much of Jharkhand state as well as adjacent parts of Bihar, Odisha, West Bengal, and Chhattisgarh. Chotanagpur is the collective name for the Ranchi, Hazaribagh, and Kodarma plateaus. Pat are hills which are characterized by a flat and regular top surface but by very steep slopes from all sides.

As we were making quick plans, I booked two tents for us at the Naturehat Camp Resorts in Netarhat. We drove into the resort.

netarhat tourist spot images

After the four-hour long journey, we were hungry. The resort could immediately serve us noodles and we opted for that. It’s cloudy day with occasional rain and drizzle. We had to rush to the Magnolia Sunset point although we knew that witnessing sunset was just impossible. We asked the resort guys to cook desi (country) chicken for us in dinner in Champaran style—stewed for quite a long time over charcoal in fixed earthen pots (Ahuna). We left for Magnolia Sunset Point.

Magnolia Sunset Point

netarhat tourist spot images

There’s hardly any British era hill station in India that is without a scandal or a suicide point. Netarhat is no exception. According to local tales, during the colonial period, an English resident named Magnolia fell in love with a local peasant. But literally driven to the edge by society, she committed suicide by jumping off the cliff. Since then the place became known as Magnolia Point.

netarhat tourist spot images

The local administration has spruced up Magnolia Sunset Point from where you can catch the best sunset view. Unfortunately, that day was cloudy and it was drizzling when we reached there and we were deprived of the view of the sunset.

netarhat tourist spot images

We spent some time there and returned to our resort after having a cup of tea with pakoras. It was dark by then.

netarhat tourist spot images

The Evening

As darkness settles over the hills, Netarhat draws into a shell. Soon after sunset, the roads turn empty. A veil of quietness drops over the surrounding hills as nature takes rest to rise with the sun on the next day. As the evening progressed the rain stopped. We sat outside enjoying whiskey until the dinner was served. It was a nice experience enjoying the elixir of life in the lap of the nature.

netarhat tourist spot images

Then came the dinner: rice, chapati, and Ahuna Chicken, a mark dish of old Champaran, Bihar – stewed for quite a long time over low flame in handis (earthen pots). It was cooked so nicely and tastes awesome.

netarhat tourist spot images

After the lovely dinner, we retired on our bed. We were tired and had to get up early to attempt viewing the sun rise. We got up by 4:30 AM and got ready to go out to the sunrise point.

The Sunrise

netarhat tourist spot images

It was nearby unlike the sunset point, which was a 9 km drive from the resort through the famous Netarhat Residential School. It was a partly cloudy morning so we had to wait for the Sun to come out of the cloud in the morning from the other side of Koel river valley.

netarhat tourist spot images

Koel River originates from the Palamau Tiger Reserve near Netarhat and is segregated into two rivers, the South Koel River and the North Koel River. The river is believed to be fed by three streams of Jharkhand, namely South Karo, North Karo and Koina. After enjoying the Koel river flowing down the valley and the Sun rising behind the cloud, we returned to the resort for having breakfast there.

Our guests had to reach Asansol on that evening so we hurriedly left for the Lower Ghaghri as we finished our breakfast. We asked for Kadi-Chawal for lunch at the resort and left for Lower Ghaghri, a tributary of Auranga River.

Lower Ghaghri Falls

Lower Ghaghri Falls is located 10 kilometres from Netarhat. It is the 33rd highest waterfall in India. Here, Local rivulets, originating from the hillocks add on to the volume of water from Upper Ghagri, tumbling down from a height of about 100 feet.

We left our car mesmerised by the beauty of the nature and started trekking in the forest.

It is through the dense forests where large branches of trees serve as bridges over the short brisk rivulets.

netarhat tourist spot images

The tall trees of the forests are endowed with thick luxuriant growth making me reminiscent of the American poet, Robert Frost’s description of lovely, dark, and deep woods; the gushing sound of the water seems to shatter the prevailing tranquility.

Due to absence of visitors on account of the COVID-19 pandemic, rainy season, the path to the bottom of the waterfalls is covered with vegetation, mud, and slippery rocks. We could not make it to the bottom to have a full view of the fall. Next time, perhaps.

Netarhat is not a much-commercialized place, so you can enjoy its tranquility and simplicity. There are a few hotels and resorts that offer comfortable accommodation and basic amenities. You can also find some local restaurants that serve delicious food. The people of Netarhat are friendly and hospitable and will make you feel at home.

Netarhat is a hidden gem of Jharkhand that deserves more attention and appreciation. It is a place where you can reconnect with nature and yourself and experience the beauty and charm of a hill station that is untouched by modernization. If you are looking for a peaceful and refreshing holiday, Netarhat is the place to be.

Bombo quarry tourist drowns after being washed off rocks during photo shoot with friends near Kiama

An atmospheric photo of a quarry with hexagonal columns of rock.

Tourists are being warned of the dangers of seeking out photos in potentially dangerous locations following the drowning of an overseas man washed off rocks on the NSW south coast.

The man, believed to be from Bangladesh, was with two friends when they fell into the water at Bombo Headland Quarry, about three kilometres north of Kiama, on Sunday afternoon.

Surf Life Saving South Coast Branch president Stephen Jones said the group was taking photos on the popular rock ledge when a large wave pulled them into the ocean.

Two of the men managed to climb to safety.

Surf life saving volunteers retrieved the 41-year-old's body from the water about 50 metres off Bombo Beach. He could not be revived.

He is the 43rd person to drown along the NSW coastline since July last year.

Mr Jones said the three men from overseas were visiting friends in Australia.

Instafamous and 'hazardous'

Bombo Headland Quarry is a tourist drawcard known for its large and picturesque rock formations.

The heritage-listed former quarry and now geological site is listed on dozens of websites highlighting locations ideal for an Instagram photo shoot.

An aerial view of Bombo Headland, jutting out with a flat rock shelf below it and green countryside in the background.

Kiama Mayor Neil Reilly said he understood why people flocked to the area to take great photos.

"It's wild and beautiful but can also be dangerous and lethal," he said.

The mayor urged visitors to the area to keep a safe distance from the rocks and away from unpredictable surf.

"Behind a fence won't spoil a photograph," he said.

Kiama Council said there were warning signs about the dangers located at Bombo Headland Quarry.

Popular photo spots can pose 'inherent danger'

Surf Life Saving NSW chief executive Steven Pearce said there was no doubt that social media often promotes "once in a lifetime picture" destinations which are generally isolated and dangerous.

"Over the last few years we've seen a lot of incidents where people have come into trouble taking selfies off rock platforms and, unfortunately, falling off cliffs," Mr Pearce said.

He said there was an "inherent danger" to people who head to beautiful remote locations, with often no help around if you do get into trouble.

"The safest place is always going to be a patrolled location where there are life guards and life savers on duty," he said.

A study by the University of New South Wales in 2023 found  selfie-related deaths were a legitimate public health concern .

The UNSW paper scraped news reports  of selfie-related deaths as well as a cross-sectional study of 379 fatalities since 2008.

It found tourists were most at risk, with the most common cause of death being falling from cliffs or waterfalls .

Mr Pearce said tourists should ensure they have reception and connectivity in coastal areas to make an emergency call, and keep a flotation device handy if trouble arises .

The surf lifesaving flags will remain up on NSW beaches until the close of the season on April 28.
