Street closures Sunday as Five Boro Bike Tour returns

The Five Boro Bike Tour is returning Sunday, with tens of thousands of cyclists expected to attend the 40-mile charity ride to raise funds for free bike education programming.

The city will shut down major thoroughfares to facilitate the ride Sunday, including portions of the FDR Drive, the BQE, the Ed Koch-Queensboro Bridge, and the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge.

The programs supported by the tour reach 30,000 New Yorkers a year, according to Bike New York, the nonprofit that organizes the tour.

“The future of New York City is on two wheels,” Mayor Eric Adams said in a letter published by the organization. “Bike New York has been an important ally in our united mission to promote cycling, protect and empower bike riders in our city, and encourage forms of movement that reduce congestion and greenhouse gas emissions."

The city estimates 32,000 cyclists will take part in the ride, taking them from the Battery to the Bronx, back down the FDR Drive to the Queensboro Bridge and into Astoria before heading south through Brooklyn and ultimately over the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge.

A “Finish Festival” will be held at the 40-mile mark at the Empire Outlets shopping center in Brighton Heights, right around the corner from the Staten Island Ferry.

The MTA is encouraging cyclists to use the Metro-North and Long Island Rail Road to get into the city, temporarily suspending bike permit requirements Saturday and Sunday. Subway stations the agency prefers riders to use include Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall, Bowling Green, the three Chambers Street stops, World Trade Center, and Cortlandt Street.

The transit authority is also asking riders not use Fulton Street, either of the Wall Street stations, Park Place, Rector Street, or Whitehall Street "as they are not well-equipped to handle large volumes of bicycles."

Such a critical mass of bicycles requires an vast number of street closures and transit changes. After all, the tour promises riders an unparalleled view of New York City unencumbered by motor vehicles.

“For one day, the roads are yours, the bridges are yours, the City is yours—there’s no better way to experience NYC,” the event’s official website states.

More information about the race can be found on its official website .

Here’s what New Yorkers, whether pedaling or not, need to know.

Public Transit

A clear message to Bike Tour cyclists has come from MTA’s leadership: mass transit is the easiest and most sustainable way to the tour.

“Customers who want to take their bike onto the subway need to tap their OMNY-enabled device or swipe their MetroCard while the station agent watches, rotate the turnstile, then enter through the station service gates once they are activated by the agent,” an MTA release states. “For safety’s sake, customers should carry, not roll, bikes down stairs."

Riders who want to take their bikes to the tour’s start near Battery Park are encouraged to use these stations:

  • Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall, 4/5/6
  • Bowling Green (Bowling Green Park entrance only), 4/5
  • Chambers Street, 2/3
  • Chambers Street, J
  • Chambers Street, A/C
  • World Trade Center, E
  • Cortlandt Street, R

MTA officials ask cyclists not use the following stations, which are not well-equipped to handle large volumes of bicycles:

  • Fulton Street, 2/3/4/5/A/C
  • Wall Street, 2/3
  • Wall Street, 4/5
  • Park Place, 2/3
  • Rector Street, R
  • Whitehall Street, R

Passengers can click here and check “Current Service Status” for bus routes affected by street closures.

Metro-North and LIRR trains will suspend limits on bicycles and recommend that cyclists use a bungee cord to secure their bike while on the train.

Bridge Closures

The Verrazzano-Narrow Bridge’s lower level headed into Staten Island will be closed until 7 p.m., as will the BQE’s westbound approach to the bridge, MTA officials said.

Other Verrazzano lane closures are, as detailed by the MTA:

  • One lower level Brooklyn-bound lane from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • The Bay Street exit from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

  • The Lily Pond Avenue exit from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The Robert F. Kennedy Bridge’s southbound FDR Drive ramp will be closed from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., with all traffic headed south required to exit the bridge at East 125th Street, officials said.

  • Youths ages 3 to 9 must ride with an adult on a tandem bike, in a child’s seat, on a tag-along bike, or in a bike trailer.
  • Youths ages 10 to 17 may ride their own bikes, but must remain in close proximity to the adult with whom they were registered.

I plan on riding a tandem with my spouse/friend/child. Do we both need to register?

All participants must register in order to ride in the Tour. Youths (under age 18) must be registered by a parent or guardian, and must be on the same team as their registered parent or guardian.

Children under the age of 3 are not allowed on the Tour (please see FAQ above).

How can I ensure that I am assigned to the same start time as my friends and family?

For Standard riders, you must be on a team together. If you are unable to create or join a team with friends and family before the team formation deadline (usually in late March or early April), you may start with them in the later of your group’s assigned waves.

Note :  VIPs and Bike New York Members do not form teams; you’ll automatically be grouped together.

I'm a Bike New York Member; can my friends and family ride with me in the first wave?

If your friends and family are Bike New York Members , they will automatically be placed in Standard Wave 1 with you.

If you want to ride with friends or family who are not Bike New York Members, you may start with them in their assigned wave.

How can I make sure I'm in the first wave for the Tour?

The only way to guarantee a start in Wave 1 of the Tour is to register as a VIP, a Bike New York Member, or a Charity rider. All other Standard riders will be placed in Waves 2 through 6, with consideration given to your start time preference.

Can I register someone else?

Yes, you may register other people for the Tour.

Please note :  any person you register must sign the Tour waiver in order to complete their registration (with the exception of riders under age 18, who must have their waiver signed by the adult registering them).

Not to worry, though! We’ll email an unsigned waiver link to that person as soon as you sign them up.

I can't make it to the Tour - can I get a refund or transfer my entry?

Tour registration fees are non-refundable and non-deferrable.

However, you may transfer your entry to another person so they can ride in your place. Here’s how:

  • Log into  your EnMotive account .
  • On your account page, click on  Registrations  on the left side and find your  2024 TD Five Boro Bike Tour registration.
  • Click on the three dots.
  • Select  Transfer Registration .
  • Please enter the Enmotive account email address of the person to whom you would like to transfer your registration.
  • Click on  Transfer Registration ; this will send an email to that person notifying them of the transfer, with instructions on how to accept the transfer.
  • There is a $10 transfer fee to be paid by the transferee.
  • The transfer will only be valid for 48 hours , so be sure they accept quickly!

NOTE : If you purchased shipping for your rider ID kit, the deadline for transfers has passed, and you may no longer transfer your entry .

Can I bring a bag on the Tour? Can I check a bag?

Yes. However, the following are prohibited:

  • Bags with shoulder straps (including backpacks, hydration packs, drawstring bags, and messenger bags)
  • Panniers or bags that hang on the side of your bike
  • Covered baskets
  • Any bag over 420 cubic inches (6.9 liters)

Here’s more info on baggage restrictions .

If you think that one or more of the above criteria applies to your bag, do not bring that bag.

If you do, your bag and personal belongings may be confiscated, and will not be returned to you under any circumstances.

Bike New York is not responsible for confiscated property.

NOTE: These restrictions may be updated as Tour day gets closer; we’ll post any changes here.

There is no baggage check on the Tour; bring only what you can carry.

Where does the money from my Tour registration fee go? What portion of my registration fee is tax deductible?

Proceeds from the Tour fund our free bicycle education programs as well as our advocacy work to create safer and more inclusive bike infrastructure in New York City. In 2022, we taught bike riding and bike safety skills in person and in our virtual classroom to more than 20,000 kids and adults.

The early bird price for Standard registration is $134.00 (plus processing fees), $29.00 of which is a tax-deductible charitable donation. VIP registration is $400.00 (plus processing fees), $94 of which is a tax-deductible charitable donation.

All Tour registration fees are non-refundable and non-deferrable.

I deferred my past Tour entry but did not redeem it. What are my options now?

2023 was the final year for deferring riders to redeem their Tour entries. All unredeemed entries have been converted to charitable donations.

If you need a donation receipt for your past entry, please reach out to us at [email protected] .

Traffic to Be Diverted at Three MTA Crossings Sunday for 2022 MS Bike Tour

Henry Hudson Bridge. Image by mattlewisid from Pixabay

The 2022 MS Bike Tour, permitted by New York City, on Sunday, Oct. 23, will impact motorists who normally use the MTA’s Robert F. Kennedy Bridge, Henry Hudson Bridge and Hugh L. Carey Tunnel. Although the race will not result in the closure of any bridge or tunnel, approach roadways to the facilities, as well as several exit and entrance ramps, will be impacted.

Motorists should be aware of the closures and use alternate routes if possible.

Henry Hudson Bridge

7 a.m. to Noon: There will be no access to the southbound Henry Hudson Bridge heading into Manhattan.

Hugh L. Carey Tunnel

6:45 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.: All traffic exiting the tunnel in Manhattan will be detoured northbound onto West Street or through the Trinity Place exit, which will remain open. NYPD will close southbound West Street and the Battery Park Underpass from West Street to the FDR Drive.

7 a.m. to 10 a.m.:  The northbound FDR Drive and Harlem River Drive will be closed, as will the northbound Harlem River Drive exit ramp from the RFK Bridge. All Manhattan-bound traffic crossing the RFK Bridge will exit onto the southbound FDR Drive or East 125th Street.

This independent charity ride will start and end on the West Side of Manhattan for a 30-mile route completely traffic free.

Motorists can sign up for MTA e-mail or text alerts at  www.mymtaalerts.com  and check the Bridges and Tunnels homepage for the latest information.

Thousands of cyclists will flood the streets of New York City as they participate in the annual TD Five Boro Bike Tour Sunday.

About 32,000 cyclists are expected to ride though the five boroughs with proceeds going to free bicycle education programs and advocacy for a bike-friendly city, according to Bike New York, a nonprofit organization that promotes and encourages bicycling and bicycle safety through education, advocacy, outreach and events.

The TD Five Boro Bike Tour, now in its 42nd year, is considered the biggest bike ride in the United States and one of the world’s largest charitable rides, Bike New York says.

  • Staten Island Expected to Get Borough-Wide Dockless Bike Share

This year’s bike tour will also hold a memorial for bicyclist Dave Schlichting, of Great Neck. Schlichting was involved in producing the Five Boro Bike Tour. He died when he was struck and killed by a minivan as he was riding his bike in March .

This year’s event kicks off at 7:30 a.m. Sunday from Church and Franklin streets in Lower Manhattan.

The route will then travel north through Midtown and Central Park, crosses part of the South Bronx, and skirts the East River on the FDR Drive. After crossing the Queensboro Bridge, the Tour will loop through Astoria, enter Brooklyn on the Pulaski Bridge and continue south. Near Downtown Brooklyn, riders will enter the Gowanus Expressway, which will lead them to the Verrazzano Bridge and Tour Finish Festival in Fort Wadsworth, Staten Island. STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Thousands of cyclists will take to the streets of New York City Sunday for the return of the 40-mile TD Five Boro Bike Tour, which was cancelled last year due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and rescheduled from Sunday, Aug. 22, due to Tropical Storm Henri.

Riders should see partly sunny skies Sunday, according to forecasters.

All proceeds from the event go toward Bike New York’s free bike education programs, which provide services to over 25,000 adults and children each year.

Here’s everything you need to know about the 2021 TD Five Boro Bike Tour, which kicks off at 7:30 a.m., beginning in Manhattan. Cyclists will then travel north into the Bronx, before heading to Queens, Brooklyn and, ultimately, crossing the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge and concluding in St. George near the Staten Island Ferry.

Click here to view a map of the route.

STREET CLOSURES

The NYPD has announced that various Staten Island streets will be closed on Sunday, from approximately 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. These include:

  • School Road, from Tompkins Avenue to Bay Street
  • Bay Street, from Fort Wadsworth to Hylan Boulevard
  • Hylan Boulevard, from Bay Street to Front Street
  • Edgewater Street, from Hylan Boulevard to Bay Street
  • Front Street, from Edgewater Street to Hannah Street
  • Hannah Street, from Front Street to Bay Street
  • Bay Street, from Hannah Street to Richmond Terrace
  • Richmond Terrace, from Bay Street to Westervelt Avenue

Additionally, the Staten Island-bound lower level of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge will be closed from 12:01 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The upper level of the bridge will remain open to any motorists looking to enter Staten Island.

The Bay Street and Lily Pond Road exits from the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge will also be closed from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Other associated closures include one Brooklyn-bound lane on the lower level of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and the Staten Island-bound Gowanus/BQE approach to the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

STATEN ISLAND FERRY

The Staten Island Ferry will provide half-hourly service in both directions on Sunday, meaning boats will depart from both the St. George and Whitehall terminals at 5 p.m., 5:30 p.m., 6 p.m., and so on.

All cyclists are required to board the boat on the lower level at both the Whitehall Terminal in Manhattan and the St. George Terminal, located at 1 Bay St. on Staten Island.

Riders must dismount and walk their bicycle while in the waiting area and when boarding and departing the boat.

All bicycles must be stored in the designated bicycle storage area on the lower level of each vessel and riders may be subject to security screenings at the terminal.

DO RIDERS NEED TO BE VACCINATED?

All registered riders will be able to participate in the event, regardless of vaccination status, but those who are not vaccinated will not be able to enter any indoor spaces associated with the event, including the VIP/Charity area at the end of the tour.

DO RIDERS NEED A MASK?

Participants will not be required to wear a mask while riding, but face coverings will be required at the event’s start and finish areas.

Brooklyn-Queens Expressway closures this weekend; see the detour maps

By Katie Houlis

Updated on: April 13, 2024 / 10:32 AM EDT / CBS New York

NEW YORK -- Parts of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway are shut down this weekend, April 13-15, as crews conduct essential deck repair work that will include new concrete and steel bars.

The New York City Department of Transportation said the repairs are critical and will extend the lifespan of the BQE.

Traffic agents will be in place to help drivers navigate.

BQE closures

All Queens-bound lanes of the BQE are closed between Atlantic Avenue and Sands Street from 2 a.m. Saturday to 4 a.m. Monday.

Drivers will not be able to make eastbound left turns from Atlantic Avenue onto Hicks Street or Clinton Street, except for buses.

The following ramps will be closed:

  • Third Avenue at 65th Street entrance
  • Sixth Avenue at 65th Street entrance
  • Prospect Expressway entrance
  • Hamilton Avenue entrance
  • Atlantic Avenue entrance
  • Cadman Plaza exit
  • Brooklyn Bridge exit
  • Manhattan Bridge exit

The DOT posted several detours to help drivers navigate the closures.

Atlantic Avenue detour

Drivers will exit at Atlantic Avenue, make a left onto Boerum Place, followed by a right onto Tillary Street, then take the ramp onto the BQE.

The closures are due to ongoing repairs and follow a previous round of construction back in October . The DOT says similar closures for repairs are expected the weekend of June 1-3.

NYC DOT Reminds New Yorkers of Closures on Brooklyn-Queens Expressway This Weekend – April 13-15 for Necessary Deck Repair Work; Motorists Should Avoid the BQE in Brooklyn

Motorists will be detoured in the Queens bound direction during weekend travel; NYC DOT launched media campaign targeted to local communities to keep them notified of closures and detours

NEW YORK — New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez today reminded New Yorkers of expected closures this weekend for necessary repair and replacement work in mid-April to the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway in Brooklyn, including full closures between the Atlantic Avenue entrance ramp and the Manhattan Bridge exit ramp in the Queens-bound direction. Closures will begin Saturday, April 13 at 2 a.m. through Monday, April 15 at 4 a.m. NYC DOT also continued a public notification campaign geared to local neighborhoods and communities ahead of the closures and detours. The repairs, which build on successful repair work conducted in October 2023, focus on new concrete and reinforcing steel bars being added at spans on the BQE near Clark Street and Grace Court as part of near-term work critical to extending the structure’s lifespan. These weekend repairs will be followed by a final, similar round of repairs expected to occur on June 1 to 3.

“Just as we did successfully last fall, we continue to deliver critical repairs to the BQE to preserve its lifespan while minimizing the impact on the local community,” said NYC DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez . “I encourage all New Yorkers to avoid the BQE in Brooklyn this weekend and to take mass transit.”

Details of BQE Closures and Detours from April 13 to April 15
