In OCT, the General Foundation program is an intensive English Language and study skills course aligning students’ English proficiency with undergraduate program requirements. Dean, Oman Tourism College (OTC)

Dr. Abdulkarim Sultan Al Mughairi, currently the Dean of Oman Tourism College, is an educator with an illustrious career spanning over four decades. He has held various roles ranging from Director General of Occupational Standards and Curriculum Development, Acting Director General for Technological Education, Dean for the International Maritime College, and Head of Engineering Department at the Higher College of Technology. Al Mughairi holds a PhD in human resource development from Manchester University, UK, and an MSc in electronics and communication engineering from University of New Haven, US. Over the years, his expertise has grown through rigorous training programs in leadership, administration, and teaching methods.

OTC is currently the only college in Oman specializing in tourism. How does that position you in the Omani education market?

In 2001, the government decided to establish OTC. It was necessary to have a specialized college that would provide the labor market with qualified, well-trained, local professionals in tourism and hospitality. I want to emphasize that hospitality education and training was the main focus of the college between 2001 and 2013. OTC, as an education and training provider, plays its role very well according to its goals and objective. Its efforts were complemented with another institute specialized in providing training programs in hospitality professions. Currently, there are four or five institutes offering hospitality training programs and also a few colleges and universities offering degree programs in tourism management. The tourism sector is growing fast, and the college is moving in line with the growth of the sector.

Given that Oman has a relatively young population, what work needs to be done to attract youth to tourism?

The tourism industry is not that attractive to the Omani society at large; it is not seen as an appealing career path, partly because of the stereotypical image it has in the society. We have to educate society, and especially parents, to combat this perception. The tourism industry is large, and it does not only consist of hotels. There are eight sub-sectors within the tourism and travel sector. Attracting students revolves around awareness. Thanks to efforts of stakeholders in general in this regard, the number of students registered at the college and other such institutes has increased. In fact, I can say it is increasing exponentially.

Which segments of the tourism and hospitality industry are offered at OTC?

We have the capacity to offer any type of training programs that are directly related to tourism and hospitality. The tourism industry has eight sub-sectors as I mentioned. The tourism industry is growing in all areas, and we offer a good number of short courses related to tourism and hospitality. Also, we offer degrees and diplomas in three specializations—tourism and hospitality management, event management, and tourism marketing—via our affiliation with Dublin Institute of Technology. Tourism and hospitality management is attracting more students, and the new event management degree program is picking up traction, attracting good attention from students. OTC is the only college that offers a degree program in event management.

What are the biggest challenges for OTC right now?

The tourism industry in Oman is facing a major challenge in that the tourism season is barely five months out of the year. The question now is what companies and the government can do to promote tourism all-year round. Due to the seasonality of tourism, companies are reluctant to employ graduates full time. This is one of the reasons why companies do not wish to employ Omanis. They are looking at expatriates who can be employed on a temporary or part-time basis according to seasonal needs. I can understand their point of view, but this is not fair to young Omani graduates. The college is trying to attract more and more students to fill the labor market, which is projected to absorb more than 500,000 jobs by 2040 as per the Oman Tourism Strategy and about 21,000 by 2020 as per Tanfeedh program projection. But employment based on seasonality hinders these efforts. One of the things we do to mitigate this challenge is coordinate with tourism companies to offer educational programs that are more in line with specific market needs so that the graduates will be more suitable for the companies compared to expatriate workers. We make sure that students are well engaged with the industry through on-the-job training or internship training.

Oman Tourism College opens registration for International Summer Programme

Noble Oman Club, the volunteering and cultural exchange network of the Oman Tourism College, has announced the opening of its registration process for its 2020 International Summer Programme. The programme will see the club extend its travels to three different countries, namely, Tunisia, Azerbaijan and Bahrain and aims to provide participants with an enriching experience that combines the concepts of both, tourism and volunteering.

Dr Abdulkarim bin Sultan al Mughairi, Dean of OTC said, “Our keenness of organising an annual summer programme stems from our main objective of moulding the personality of our tourism students, enlightening them about the other cultures through exposure. Furthermore, we aim to instil in them the values of global volunteering and providing support as well as encourage teamwork and cooperation. The programme is also in line with our pillar of recognising the value of innovation in all aspects of our education process. All the activities in each respective trip will contribute towards the development of the personality and thinking of all participants, alongside enhancing their communication skills and knowledge.” This year’s summer programme comprises of educational tourism trips to Tunisia, Azerbaijan and Bahrain, with a range of activities offered in each country. Those who will be choosing to travel to Tunisia, will enjoy the experience of teaching English to students, learn about tourism photography and videography, build their tourism journalist/researcher skills as well as social media community management.

How to explore northern Oman’s most famous sites, from Muscat to the remote Musandam Peninsula

From natural to man-made, Oman has a host of spectacular sites including ancient forts, enormous mosques, and its very own Grand Canyon. This ten-day itinerary includes many of the country’s must-visit attractions.

The following itinerary focuses squarely on the north of the country, using Muscat as a jumping-off point for exploring the mighty Al Hajar Mountains then sailing north to the Musandam Peninsula, separated from the rest of Oman by the UAE. This is a swaggeringly beautiful part of Arabia, where age-old landscapes buckle across the map and savage coastlines rise out of the sea. A trip to Oman is about historical cities, delicate cultural customs and a deep sense of tradition — but it’s also about nature running wild. Pack your adventure gear.  

Days 1-2: arrival and Ar Rustaq  

From the unrushed coastal capital of Muscat, your likely entry-point into Oman, the Al Hajar Mountains lie directly to the south. They’re not easy to miss. The rusty-red mountain belt serves as a backdrop to the greater urban area, stretching right across the north of the country, even reaching the national border into the UAE. The highest peaks top out at almost 10,000ft (well over twice the height of the UK’s tallest) and loom over deep wadis, creating a fearsomely good setting for outdoor adventure. Ease into your explorations, however, by delving into the past. Stop first at Nakhal, an hour’s drive from Muscat, where a restored fort and some scenic hot springs give good reason to linger, before continuing to Ar Rustaq. The town was the Omani capital for around 150 years, and the fort here is one of the oldest in the country, with pre-Islamic foundations and a labyrinthine spread of towers and passages.  

Days 3-4: Jabal Shams and the Omani Grand Canyon

Onwards and upwards. A winding three-hour drive from Rustaq brings you to the deserted mountain village of Ghul, where abandoned houses dot the hillside. From here, the driving becomes a little trickier, so if you’re in your own vehicle a four-wheel-drive is advisable — although bear in mind that various tour companies offer Jabal Shams trips from Muscat. Continuing on past Ghul, you’ll head even deeper into the mountains, where the main attraction is the four-hour, out-and-back hike known as the Balcony Walk. Beginning from the village of Khateem, the hike skirts the rim of the so-called Omani Grand Canyon, serving up arguably the most extraordinary scenery in the entire country: vast chasms of craggy rock and silent valleys. If your luck is in, you might even spot eagles soaring on the thermals overhead. The country’s highest point — the 9,842ft bulk of Jabal Shams itself — looms close by, with superb options for abseiling, via ferrata and summit ascents.

Days 5-7: moving on to Musandam  

Drive back to the coast via the oasis city of Nizwa, known for its centuries-old fort and one of Oman’s oldest souks — expect everything from silver and saffron to live goat auctions. The drive back to Muscat via Nizwa takes around two and a half hours. Back in the capital, stay for a day to soak up must-see sights like the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque before catching the ferry along the coast to the Musandam Peninsula. You’ll be dropped at the port of Khasab, in the very far north, meaning the voyage treats you to some of the most dramatic coastal scenery in the Gulf before you’ve even disembarked. Musandam’s high-sided inlets, known as khors, draw regular comparisons with the fjords of Norway — unsurprising when you consider that some of the cliffs tower hundreds of metres above the Strait of Hormuz.    

Musandam has been dubbed the ‘Norway of Arabia’ for its khors (rocky inlets) and dramatic mountain roads.

Days 8-10: making the most of Musandam  

Parts of the peninsula are only around 90 miles from the razzle-dazzle of major cities, but the attraction here is all about getting active. From its kayaking, cliff-climbing and mountain safaris to its dolphin-watching, diving and fishing, the Musandam exclave has outdoor potential by the dhow -load. The classic choice is a cruise from Khasab into Khor Ash Sham, the longest and most imposing of the inlets, where mountains soar overhead and isolated hamlets stud the shoreline. Cruises tend to be either half-day or full-day, and on the latter you’re likely to make a lunch stop at Telegraph Island — once home to a British telegraph station — for swimming and snorkelling. The inlet also gives a strong chance of seeing dolphins. Back on land, take a tour in a four-wheel-drive vehicle to Khor Al Najd, one of the few spots along the coast reachable by motorised transport — the views are sensational. There are some upscale hotel options in Musandam, but try to spare at least one night for beach camping, which can be arranged either independently or through local operators. When your time here comes to a close, catch the ferry back down south to the capital city — ideally rounding things off with a slap-up Arabian meal overlooking Old Muscat’s port.  

Getting there & around Oman Air flies direct from Heathrow to Muscat International Airport. For the mountain leg of the trip, it’s simple enough to hire a vehicle from Muscat, either from the airport, your hotel or a rental outlet. Alternatively, various operators offer trips similar to those outlined above.  

When to go October to March are the peak months, when much of Oman has a summer-in-the-Med climate.

70 Photos of Oman: from Sand Dunes to Canyons

A collection of my best photos of Oman that will inspire you to travel there someday.

Oman : a name so exotic and inviting, yet strangely unknown to many. At least I knew close to nothing about it before my recent trip there with my husband and our 2-year-old daughter.

We spent most of Christmas and New Year’s traversing the country’s northern region — from the sprawling capital of Muscat to the massive sand dunes of Wahiba Sands, continuing onto the picturesque fishing town of Sur before visiting the spectacular Wadis along the coast. What we found was a humble nation packed full of outstanding natural beauty that’s yet to be discovered by mass tourism.

Oman: A Spectacular Travel Destination

Poised on the southern end of the Arabian Peninsula, the country shares borders with the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Yemen — but it’s distinctively a world of its own.   The country has an embracing society that warmly welcomes visitors; the people are incredibly friendly. Its robust infrastructure also makes exploring its treasure trove of desert, lush green oases and long coastlines very easy and pleasant.

Oman’s economy has developed at lightning speed thanks to its oil wealth — but unlike neighboring UAE, it has successfully retained its rich heritage, Bedouin traditions, strong sense of identity and pride. Since taking to the throne in 1970, Sultan Qaboos has placed an emphasis on preserving their culture while moving forward with modern times.

As such, traveling Oman gave us a rare chance to experience the Arab kingdom without the distorting lens of excessive wealth and modernization. In the face of modernity, Oman’s sleepy fishing towns, spectacular mountains and wind-blown deserts remain at the heart of the Omani spirit.

Wahiba Sands

This is a vast desert sprawling across the northern part of Oman, just a two-hour drive from Muscat. Also known as  Sharqiya Sands, the desert covers a massive area of 12,500 square kilometers (4,800 sq miles). The desert has been of scientific interest since a 1986 expedition by the Royal Geographical Society for the diversity of the terrain, the flora and fauna.

Expect to find sand dunes as high as 100 meters and (overly) luxurious desert camps in the heart of the desert. There’s even a well-paved road that brings you right next to the massive dunes, which makes them very accessible even for those without a 4×4. All of the desert camps here offer 4 x 4 tours that bring you on a thrilling ride up and down the dunes.

Where to Stay:   Bidiya Desert Camp  is one of the best places to stay in Wahiba Sands. We’ve stayed in desert camps in Jordan and Egypt before and absolutely loved sleeping in deserts, but this place was different to other desert camps we’ve been. The rooms were actually made of concrete, with proper beds and air-conditioning — which we thought were too much for a desert camp.  Book here.

Wadi Bani Khalid

Oman is dotted with deeply entrenched valleys filled with fresh spearmint waters from the mountains, with the most famous one being Wadi Bani Khalid. It’s made up of several natural pools, a narrow ridge in which you can swim, and a cave. Because of the developed infrastructure in Oman, the wadi is easily reached by road and there are plenty of lounging spots all around the canyon. There’s even a restaurant and bar within the reserve.

Jebel Shams

Home to some of the highest peaks in Oman, Jebel Shams is a mountainous region just two hours from Muscat. Known as the ‘Grand Canyon of Oman’, Jebel Shams is an excellent spot for trekking. The drive up there is spectacular, but it’s quite a challenging drive and best to do on a 4×4.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site was our favourite spot in Oman; Built in pre-Islamic times, this ancient fort was only restored in 1987 but now boasts beautiful adobe walls and sandstone towers that rise up to 165 feet in height. Unless the Nizwa Fort, Bahla Fort is more authentic and less touristy. If you only have time to visit one fort in Oman, make it this one.

Bimmah Sinkhole

Nizwa Fort & Old Town

Built in the 1650s, this national monument has an impressive architecture and an informative museum. It’s located in the Nizwa’s old town, which itself is also worth a visit. We loved the souk and its maze of spice stalls, antique shops and Omani teahouses.

Fishing Town of Sur

Muscat, the Capital of Oman

The country’s capital is actually made up of several small towns merging together to form one city, with Muttrah being the old town. Muttrah Souk is a colorful mishmash of textile shops and spice stands, with lots of interesting traditional items on sale. The port is also a beautiful place to watch people watch and observe the maritime lifestyle of the city.
