The Farm at Walnut Creek

The Farm at Walnut Creek is a great place for kids to visit and hand feed over 500 exotic animals including giraffes, cattle, horses, elk, deer, camels, buffaloes, porcupines and more. Visitors have the option of exploring the 2+ mile scenic farm park with your own vehicle (remaining inside only) or for a small extra fee, combine your visit with a horse drawn wagon ride that includes your own bucket of animal feed.

Admission also includes access to all of the farmhouses, barns, produce stand, gift barn, and playground shaped like Noah’s Ark. Visitors recommend wearing comfortable shoes, bringing extra sunscreen, and a packed lunch to eat at one of the picnic benches available on the farm.

Amish Country Theater

With two “Rib-Ticklin’ Family Fun” variety shows, special events, and an Amish Homestyle Buffet on site, the Amish Country Theater feeds and entertains families with good food, clean comedy and wholesome entertainment.

The variety shows are on stage of the modern 600 seat auditorium 4 nights a week with additional special event shows including tribute bands, comedy acts, and holiday specials. Theater guests recommend both the Amish Country Buffet and the connected hotel for a package visit to the area.

Holmes County Flea Market

Holmes County Flea Market has more than 65 vendors offering a large variety of items in their 58,000 sq ft indoor building and an additional 5,000 sq ft outdoor section. Florals, crafts, decor, jewelry, Amish Antiques, and a whole lot more. Restaurant and other food items are also available.

Tour busses and RVs are welcome, but expect a small parking fee. The flea market is wheelchair accessible with a few wheelchairs available to guests at no charge. The market is pet friendly, but leashes are required. Open 9am to 5pm, Thursday-Saturday from March to December. Contact them for their additional Wednesday hours during September and October.

Sols in Berlin

Sols in Berlin promises an “arts and crafts extravaganza” for visitors to their three stores located in the Village of Berlin. They offer a large variety of Amish, American, and Country Crafts and decor as well as handmade food items and gifts, with something for everyone.

World’s Largest Cuckoo Clock

With the Cuckoo bird announcing the smiling four piece polka band, dancing couple and a water wheel, you won’t want to miss the adorable performance of the World’s Largest Cuckoo Clock. You can find it on the corner of Main and Broadstreet in Sugarcreek and dance along with the festive music at the top of each hour and on the half hour.

David Warther Carvings

Open April through October, stop into David Warther Carvings to visit the museum featuring the artistic work the 5th generation Swiss heritage carver. The large five room museum features nearly 90 carvings of the “History of the Ship” from the first Dynasty of Egypt to today created from antique ivory, ebony wood and abalone pearl.

Amish and Mennonite Heritage Center

If you’re interested in the history of the Amish and Mennonite people you won’t want to miss the opportunity to visit the museum, pre-Civil War one room schoolhouse and the amazing Behalt Cyclorama mural. The Cyclorama artwork is a 10 ft tall, 256 ft long mural timeline of Amish and Mennonite heritage beginning from 1525.

The museum and gift shop are free to visitors. Guided tours of the Behalt Cyclorama, one room Schoolhouse and Pioneer Barn are available both individually or with a combo ticket.

Tis the Season Christmas Shop

This the Season Christmas Shop is more than just a store, it’s year-round Christmas experience with something for everyone. The three level shop is designed and arranged as if you are walking through a Christmas Village with a log cabin, working fireplace and their Alleluia Chapel of stained glass windows. The lower level is reserved their forest of Christmas trees and nativity sets. 

Open Monday-Saturday, the shop’s website lists special events hosted by Tis the Season as well as dates opportunities to meet Santa during the months of November and December.

Amish Country Riding Stables

Enjoy the beauty of the Amish countryside by horseback on a guided horseback trail in Millersburg. The friendly horses are comfortable with both experienced and new riders, so no experience is required, but riders must be 8 years old or older with a weight limit of 225 lbs. 

Each ride lasts about 40-45 minutes with additional instruction time making the experience about one hour long. Reservations are required on Saturdays and recommended Tuesday-Friday. (The stables are closed on Sunday and Monday.) Rides are dependent on the weather and available April through October of each year. Cash is the only accepted payment, but guests staying at the Guiggisberg Swiss Inn receive a discount on rides. Age of Steam Roundhouse

As a full-size working roundhouse, the Age of Steam Roundhouse is a great place for locomotive enthusiasts to learn and experience the restoration of these great machines. The roundhouse itself is a fully-functional workshop complete with 18 stalls, 115-foot turntable and turntable pit for their 22 historic steam locomotives.

The museum and collection also include storage tracks, coal dock, a wood water tank, ash pit, and back shop, much of which can be seen during one of their three guided tours. Best suited for school age children and older, it is recommended that visitors reserve tickets online since there will be a limited number of tickets available on site. Strollers and wheelchairs are welcome on tours, children under 3 and active duty military visitors are free.

A few of the best places to shop in Berlin, Ohio

Known for its unique residents and beautiful country landscapes, Holmes County, Ohio is the heart of Amish Country.

This region offers its guests a wide variety of activities, perfect for a weekend excursion. But for many visitors, it’s the unique shops that make Amish Country a favorite place to get away.

Recently, I traveled to Berlin, one of the most popular destinations in the county, and found several must-visit spots.

As a recent college graduate, I wanted to check out local businesses that offered great experiences but wouldn’t necessarily break the bank. My tastes also draw me toward unique items that can’t be found anywhere else. If this sounds like you, I’d encourage you to come and see the area’s many antique stores, gift shops and small-town boutiques.

A Day On The Town

The first place I visited was Studio 4 Designs , a bit of a hidden gem as it sits just off the main street in town. Here, you’ll find many one-of-a-kind and vintage items. Kathy, the owner, sews pillows and makes her own macrame, and her husband crafts their furniture.

Studio 4 Designs is the perfect spot if you're interested in cottagecore or retro vibes for your space, and I particularly love their many statement pieces. From antique typewriters and cameras to a cool old radio and vintage photographs, they have so many ways to enhance your decor.

Unique bottles and decorative art pieces create a whimsical feel, and their beautiful furniture would add character to any room!

My favorite accents were the plant hangers that Kathy made as well as a green locker side table. I'm excited to see new pieces that they'll bring in, and I encourage you to check out the one-of-a-kind items you can score for your own home.

Next, I made my way to Kaufman's Kountry Accents . The second I walked into the warm atmosphere of this store, I was met with the delightful aroma of butterscotch. This space is absolutely filled with rustic farmhouse decorations and greenery that would make a beautiful addition to any interior design.

Craving a snack while you shop? A super fun spot is MainStreet Fudge & Popcorn Co ! With ice cream, cream sodas, taffy, popcorn and fudge, you are sure to satisfy your sweet tooth. Grab something to enjoy during your trip or take a taste of Amish Country home to your family.

Just down the road, I found Ginger House Coffee . Their wild berry smoothies are my favorite, and I absolutely loved their cranberry pecan salad.

I continued to walk down to the Berlin Village Gift Barn where I was greeted with a Holmes County version of IKEA! A former dairy barn, this amazing space features beautiful home decor, accent furniture, kitchenware and more.

The Gardens at Country Gatherings is just across the parking lot, offering plants, decorations, pots, supplies, and even things to put together your own fairy garden. They have a variety of annuals, perennials and cacti, and I was thrilled to look through their selection of succulents.

To complete the trip, I headed to the Berlin Antique Mall and Berlin Craft Mall . Both malls are huge and filled with all sorts of fun finds. With furniture, decor, books, clothing, pottery and more, you'll never know what you’ll discover!

Berlin is home to so many great shopping experiences, it’s impossible to fit them into a single day. I’ve started a list for my next trip, which includes a candle shop, a Native American jewelry store, and a building with a sign that says "The Original Fairy Store"! They've all piqued my interest and I can’t wait to spend another day out-and-about in Berlin.

The city that was once known as "The Mistake on the Lake" is making a comeback. Like many former industrialized cities, Cleveland is now one of the cool places to visit – even producers of the ABC television reality show "The Bachelor" think so. An episode of the 24th season of the show highlighted some of the city's top attractions, including the home of the Cleveland Browns, FirstEnergy Stadium, The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and nearby Cedar Point Amusement Park. Rock & Roll Hall of Fame: Cleveland

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame opened Sept. 2, 1995, along with a benefit concert at Cleveland Municipal Stadium, featuring performances by musical icons like Aretha Franklin, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and James Brown. Today, the five-level glass pyramid-shaped building is one of Cleveland's top attractions. If you love rock 'n' roll, you'll appreciate priceless memorabilia like performance costumes, handwritten drafts of songs and other personal artifacts. There are also feature films, videos and interactive displays. You can even pick up a guitar or sit behind the keyboard or drums and make your own music in The Garage or watch recordings of memorable performances in the Connor Theater. And you won't want to miss the highlight of a visit on Level 3, the inductee Hall of Fame.

A Christmas Story House: Cleveland

Fans of Ralphie and "A Christmas Story" won't want to miss a visit to the original house from the movie. You can tour the home and visit A Christmas Story Museum across the street, where you can see behind-the-scenes photos , authentic costumes and props, such as Randy's snowsuit, the toys from the Higbee's window and the family car.

You can even book an overnight stay in the house and sleep in Ralphie's and Randy's beds. Use of the entire private third-floor loft is included in the price. And after the museum closes, you can pretend you're the Parker family and relive scenes from the movie as you'll have run of the house until 9 a.m. the following day.

Visitors familiar with the movie especially enjoy visiting the attraction. They also mention that you can touch the items throughout the house, which is unusual for most tours.

Visit breweries and stamp your Cleveland Brewery Passport

Like most hip cities in the U.S., Cleveland has a burgeoning craft beer scene. Be sure to pick up a Cleveland Brewery Passport before heading out on the mission to visit 41 breweries within a 25-mile radius of downtown Cleveland. West Side Market: Cleveland

The West Side Market is a must for food enthusiasts. Located in the historic Ohio City neighborhood, the venue is Cleveland's oldest continuously operating market and boasts 100 vendors selling meats, seafood, produce, dairy goods, flowers, spices, prepared foods and more. Check out local favorites like the famous bratwurst served at Frank's II, the third-generation itineration of the 1970 original Frank's Bratwurst stall at the market. Another stop you'll want to make is for traditional Polish dishes like pierogies, potato latkes and sauerkraut balls at Pierogi Palace.

Reviewers love going to the market to see all the selections, including the baked goods. If you're looking for a deal, they suggest going before the vendors close at the end of the day.

Nestled along the shoreline of Sandusky Bay, this coastal destination is home to the famous Cedar Point Amusement Park. It's also regarded as Ohio's Water Park Capital, with popular indoor and outdoor water park resorts like Kalahari, Castaway Bay, Cedar Point Shores and Great Wolf Lodge.

In the warmer months, you can enjoy water sports activities like kayaking, sailing or paddleboarding on the bay and Lake Erie. You can also take sunset and scenic cruises, and explore Lake Erie's islands by island-hopping cruises. Another highlight in Sandusky is the self-guided Underground Railroad Historic Tour which stops at homes, buildings and sites that were critical to Sandusky's Underground Railroad efforts.

If you're up for a two-day road trip , you won't want to miss the eight beautiful lighthouses along Lake Erie in the Shores & Islands region, six of which you can view onshore. On day one, two of the structures will include the restored Port Clinton Lighthouse and the 200-year-old Marblehead Lighthouse.

Cedar Point Amusement Park: Sandusky

Billed as the "roller coaster capital of the world," Cedar Point has been welcoming guests to its location along Lake Erie since 1870. The park's first roller coaster, the Switchback Railway, opened in 1892. From the late 1970s on, Cedar Point continued to build mind-boggling coasters with each one outdoing the other. The park broke its own record in 2000 with the opening of Millennium Force. At the time, and at more than 300 feet high, it was the tallest, fastest and steepest roller coaster in the world.

Today, the park is home to more than 70 rides, including 17 roller coasters. Steel Vengeance is the longest hybrid coaster in the world and Millennium Force is still considered one of the world's best coasters.

For calmer pursuits, visitors can relax on a mile-long beach, take a riverboat ride on the Snake River Expedition, enjoy live entertainment and grab some grub at plenty of casual dining options. And in the summer, guests can cool off at the 18-acre Cedar Point Shores Waterpark, riding the waterslides and playing in the water features. Visitors rave about Cedar Point's attractions and rides and say it's a roller coaster-lover's dream. Some people say it's the best amusement park in the U.S.

National Museum of The United States Air Force: Dayton

Located at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, just 6 miles northeast of Dayton, The National Museum of the United States Air Force is the largest military aviation museum in the world. The complex boasts more than 19 acres of indoor exhibits and over 350 aerospace vehicles, missiles, artifacts and all things aviation. History, aeronautics and war buffs will enjoy browsing impressive displays, such as the World War II, Korean War, Cold War and Space galleries.

Before your visit, and to make the most of your experience, check out the calendar of upcoming events and the movie schedule that features films like "Fighter Pilot Operation Red Flag 3D" and "Astronaut Ocean to Orbit." The museum also has several exciting and interactive simulator rides.

Travelers say it's an incredible experience to visit and see all the history in one place, including the presidential planes. The museum is open seven days a week and admission and parking are free. There is a minimal cost ($10) for the movies and simulator rides.

Situated along the Ohio River, the Cincinnati region covers parts of three states – Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky. While in town, plan to explore the thriving riverfront in Northern Kentucky and downtown Cincinnati. Over-the-Rhine Neighborhood: Cincinnati

Originally settled by German immigrants, Over-the-Rhine was booming with artisans and three dozen local breweries more than 150 years ago. Prohibition shut down the brewing industry, but after many years, the neighborhood is undergoing a renaissance.

One highlight is the colorful Findlay Market, which opened in 1855. This venue is Ohio's oldest continuously operating public market and is a major draw for locals and tourists. The market is brimming with specialty and artisan foods, locally sourced fresh produce and meats, seafood and fresh flowers. Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden: Cincinnati

The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden opened its doors to the public in 1875 and is one of the oldest zoos in the U.S. The original property consisted of 65 acres in the city, but over the years, the zoo acquired additional surrounding blocks and land in the suburbs. The zoo is recognized as a National Historic Landmark for the architecture of the Elephant House, Passenger Pigeon Memorial and the Reptile House. And with more than 500 species of animals and 3,000 plant species, it also boasts one of the largest zoo collections in the country.

Before you go, check out the zoo's calendar of special events and activities, such as The African Sundowner, an adults-only sunset safari. This adventure begins with cocktails and light bites and includes an after-hours tour with a zoo educator. And don't miss visiting baby hippo Fiona and her mom Bibi at Hippo Cove. Fiona was born six weeks prematurely at the zoo and is the smallest hippo ever to survive.
