Click. Magazine writer

As we look towards 2023, global traveller sentiment appears to be overwhelmingly positive. In fact, 73% of global travellers are feeling more optimistic about travelling in 2023 compared to 2022.

Even against a backdrop of global instability, 72% of travellers say that travelling will always be worth it. And 43% plan to spend more lavishly to make up for missed travel opportunities.

To understand how travel will be reimagined in 2023, we spoke to over 24,000 travellers across 32 countries and territories. Here, we unpack what travellers will be looking for in the new year, along with ways you can prepare to meet their needs.

1. Travellers want to feel ‘off-grid’ (to an extent)

For their 2023 trips, most travellers (55%) are looking for off-grid style vacations to escape from reality. Almost half (44%) want their travel experiences to have a more back-to-basics feel, while 58% are interested in learning survival skills including how to source clean water (53%) and light a fire from scratch (42%).

This may lead to a rise in out-of-city breaks, with properties that can fuel travellers’ desire for a remote trip potentially proving the most popular.

But going back to basics doesn’t necessarily mean roughing it. Many travellers (48%) will only consider venturing off-grid if it doesn’t come at the expense of indulgence, and the majority (53%) say that having a phone and internet connection is non-negotiable.

How you can prepare:

As people look to move away from cities and get back to nature, we expect to see a rise in more eco-friendly stays that embrace natural surroundings and have strong sustainability credentials.

If you’ve already been investing in sustainability, make sure guests are aware so you can attract their interest. You can do this by indicating on the extranet which sustainability practices you’ve implemented. We’ll then display them on your property page as part of our Travel Sustainable programme .

2. Travellers want to push their boundaries

Local excursions are likely to become increasingly popular as guests search for authenticity in destinations that have a culture polar to their own. This comes as 73% of respondents are looking forward to experiencing ‘out of comfort zone’ travel that pushes them to the limit.

Half of respondents (50%) want to experience a complete culture shock in 2023, whether that’s completely different cultural experiences and languages (51%) or exploring lesser-known cities with hidden gems that aren’t already on the radar (30%).

As travellers seek new cultural experiences, now is the time to really lean into what makes your location – and your property – unique. Give travellers a glimpse into traditions, cuisine, immersive adventures or anything else that can make their stay a truly memorable one.

Travel

3. Travellers are embracing nostalgia and family time

We found that 88% of travellers want nostalgic getaways in 2023 – things like visits to retro film locations, or bus travel to evoke school trips. While almost a quarter (23%) want to disappear into the romanticism of a pre-digital era – even Millennials and Gen Z traveller who never lived it.

Of course, Millennials are now becoming parents themselves, and they’ll be the first to book emerging era-themed accommodations that will transport them back to a time they hold close to their hearts. This  means destinations previously popular in the 80s and 90s are likely to make a comeback – such as Budva in Montenegro and Bolzano in Italy, which both feature on our list of 2023 trending destinations.

Many hope to take family along too, with 54% planning for multi-generational ‘family reunion’ trips.

If you want to attract the demand for family bookings, one effective method is offering competitive Child Rates . The increased flexibility and transparency can really appeal to guests and can result in an increase of family bookings by up to 15% on average.

4. Travellers are using travel to support their health

Travel is often linked to wellness, and in 2023 travellers will be looking to take this to the next level.

Our survey showed that nearly half of travellers (44%) are hoping to book meditation and mindfulness getaways next year, and 42% are keen to go on a 'health hiatus' to focus on mental or transformative health, or to help with milestones such as pregnancy or the menopause. Two in five (40%) are even keen to book a silent retreat.

As well as highlighting any wellness facilities you currently offer – such as spas or gyms – you could consider partnering with local businesses that provide additional wellness experiences, which you can then offer to your guests.

5. Travellers are reconsidering their spending

While many are open to spending more lavishly to make up for the past few years, the current economic climate is still a strong driver towards value for money. As a result, travellers in 2023 will be more mindful over how to make the most of their travel budget and what takes priority.

For some travellers this will be about budgeting tightly to take advantage of deals, hacks and smartly-timed travel (63%), with 53% looking outside the usual peak-booking seasons to try and find deals. We also expect to see a decrease in the number of short city breaks as 55% of travellers believe that best use of their budget is taking one or two longer vacations.

The majority (61%) will plan their trips more in advance in the hope of securing a better deal, while 60% will prioritise taking advantage of discounts and loyalty schemes to drive even further savings.

Becoming a Genius partner can help you attract budget-savvy travellers. On average, partners who join Genius see 70% more search-result views, 45% more bookings and 40% more revenue even once the cost of the discount is accounted for.

To secure early and off-peak bookers, make sure your availability is up to date so that you’re visible in search results.

Business travel

6. Travellers are open to work trips – but don’t want to work on their holidays

As much as remote working has allowed people to work from anywhere, many people are putting strong restrictions on when and where they’re willing to work, with two thirds of people (66%) wanting their trips to be strictly work free in 2023.

People will make exceptions, however, for dedicated work trips. Almost half (49%) are not interested in working while away but would consider clocking in for a company retreat or trip.

In fact, people are hoping for more corporate group travel, with 51% saying they would like to see their employer use the money saved from moving to remote/hybrid working models for more corporate travel or retreats, and 44% looking forward to ‘real life’ work trips to bring people together.

If you want to capture demand from businesses, shine a light on the kinds of features that cater to corporate travel. This could include facilities – such as meeting rooms, dedicated working spaces and strong wifi – as well as any helpful services you’re able to offer – such as invoicing and on-site printing.

7. Travellers are curious about the rise of virtual reality technology

Topics like the metaverse and virtual or augmented reality used to be niche, but they are becoming increasingly mainstream.

When it comes to virtual reality, 43% of global travellers report that they will be turning to the tech to inspire their 2023 holiday choices, with 46% saying they’re more likely to travel to destinations that they wouldn’t have previously considered after experiencing them virtually.

While the metaverse offers people a new way to experience travel in the year ahead, the majority of travellers (60%) don’t believe such experiences are fulfilling enough to check locations off their bucket list – so it’s unlikely to replace in-person travel any time soon.

While travellers expecting a complete virtual reality experience is likely some way off, investing in high-quality pictures and virtual property tours can help potential guests really imagine themselves in your property. It can also highlight all of the unique features that make your property stand out.

Booking.com reveals 2023 travel trend predictions

From polyamorous retreats to prepping for the apocolypse, booking.com shares its predictions for travel in the year ahead. rose dykins reports.

Insight from Booking.com reveals travellers are feeling much more optimistic about travelling in 2023 compared with 2022 – with almost three quarters (72 per cent) of customers saying that, despite uncertainty and possible chaos, travel will always be worth it.

The booking platform commissioned research that surveyed more than 24,000 travellers across 32 countries and territories, combining this with its own insights, to reveal seven emerging travel predictions for 2023.

The 2023 travel trends reflect the global sociopolitical and economic landscape customers are currently experiencing: living through a time of war, societal polarisation, rising inflation and urgent concerns about climate change.

Booking says these factors are causing people to negotiate an inner “tug-of-war” to reconcile what is important to them with the demands of everyday life. The company’s travel predictions for 2023 reflect this sentiment and reflect the needs of travellers who are moving in different directions as they adapt to big changes. These trends are:

Preppers in Paradise

Booking predicts that going off-grid will be more sought-after than every in 2023, with travellers seeking back-to-basics experiences. After a chaotic few years, customers want holidays that help escape from reality (55 per cent) and switch off, with only the bare necessities included (44 per cent).

In fact, 58 per cent said they would like to use travel in 2023 as a chance to learn survival skills – with 39 per cent saying they’d even like to learn to prepare for an apocalypse.

According to Booking, we can expect to see new accommodation for burnt-out city dwellers searching for simplicity – with camouflaged cabins, campfire cuisine and experiences that teach travellers to become more self-sufficient.

Virtual Voyages

Almost half of respondents (43 per cent) said they will be turning to virtual reality in 2023 to seek inspiration for their next holiday, while 35 per cent were interested in embarking on multi-day VR travel experiences.

Booking also predicts travel will enter the metaverse “in earnest” in 2023, with travellers able to “try before they buy” through accessing destinations replicated (and reimagined) in the metaverse.

Beyond 2023, thanks to advances in haptic feedback – the use of touch to communicate with users – virtual travel will become much more immersive, delivering a credible sense of 3D touch, such as the feel of soft sand and the warmth of the sun.

Delight in the Discomfort Zone

Half of the global travellers surveyed said they want to experience complete culture shock in 2023. This could be travelling somewhere that offers completely different cultural experiences and languages (51 per cent) or exploring lesser-known cities (30 per cent).

Almost three quarters of respondents (73 per cent) said the were looking forward to experiencing “out of comfort zone” travel that pushes them to the limit. Interestingly, 38 per cent of travellers said they would want to use their holiday for UFO or alien spotting tours.

Booking says the trend for “culture shook” travel will see people throw caution to the wind in 2023 – 28 per cent of respondents said they wanted to buy a one-way ticket and follow their instinct to wherever it took them.

Glamorising the Good ol’ Days

Booking’s research highlighted a desire amongst travellers to disappear into the pre-digital era, including amongst millennial and Gen Z respondents, many of whom have never experienced it. 88 per cent said that in 2023, they intend to carve out travel experiences that remind them of simpler times.

With many millennials now the parents of young kids, Booking predicts an increase in holidays to destinations that were popular in the 80s and 90s such as Budva (Montenegro) or Bolzano (Italy), where they can book into accommodation that transports them back to their own holidays.

More than half of respondents (54 per cent) also said that multi-generational “family reunion” trips were top of their travel agenda for 2023.

Peace and Pleasure Pilgrimages

According to Booking, wellness travel will reach new levels of popularity in 2023, with travellers taking a no-holds-barred approach to attaining peace and pleasure in less conventional ways.

Two in five research respondents said they aim to attend a silent retreat in 2023, while 42 per cent were keen to go on a health hiatus and focus on particular issues such as mental health or life milestones such as menopause or pregnancy.

What’s more, 36 per cent said they wanted to try a spiritual travel experience involving alternative substances such as cannabis or plant-based psychedelics, which are set to become more mainstream.

Meanwhile, 36 per cent of travellers were interested in taking a holiday centred around sexual wellbeing. Booking predicts experiences such as polyamorous retreats, bondage camps and resort dedicated to exploring specific fetishes and kinks in a safe space away from home could become more popular in 2023.

From Daily Grind to Great Company Escape

Refreshingly, 66 per cent of respondents said they want their trips in 2023 to be completely work-free. However, while 49 per cent said they were uninterested in working while away, they would consider clocking in for a company retreat or trip.

According to Booking, with hybrid working now so prevalent, people are seeking chances to bond with their colleagues away from the office via “real life” work trips (44 per cent), where they can combine business travel with productive play.

In 2023, this could see a rise in destination business retreats that focus on strengthening relationships rather than work – such as “survivor”-themed trips at luxury cabins, or crime-centric escapes with detective courses that double up as sight-seeing scavenger hunts in destinations.

Saving to Splurge

In 2023, travellers will continue to prioritise travel – with half saying that investing in travel is a top priority for them. However, they will be more mindful over maximising their budget, with 68 per cent seeking more “bang for their buck”.

With travellers planning their spending more tightly, 2023 will be a year of taking advantage of deals, hacks and smartly timed travel for 63 per cent of survey respondents. More than half will look to save money by choosing off-season destinations or taking a longer route on the journey, 63 per cent will prioritise travel with discounts and loyalty programmes and 61 per cent will plan travel further in advance to secure a better deal.

At the same time, travellers are prepared to spend their money well on travel, opting for the things that bring most value to them. Almost half (49 per cent) said they plan to be more indulgent in their spending habits while on vacation to make up for the lack of holidays possible during Covid.

Arjan Dijk, senior vice-president and chief marketing officer at Booking.com, says: “If the last few years have taught us anything it’s that travel should not be taken for granted. This year’s travel predictions research shows the undercurrent of intentional paradoxical behaviors that will put us all more comfortably in the driving seat amid relentless instability.”

He adds: “It also demonstrates a desire for travel to be a way to seek unapologetic moments of happiness and escapism to counteract the heavy realities of our news feeds. As such, at Booking.com our aim will continue to be to make it easier for everyone to seek their unique travel bliss in a more personalized and connected way in the year ahead and beyond.”

travel trends 2023 booking.com

There are few destinations where travellers can climb a mountain, head to the beach and visit a world-class art gallery all in one day, but Hobart is one such place. The world-renowned Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) placed Hobart on the global cultural map. But the nature here is equally astounding; the capital of Tasmania is the southernmost capital in Australia , is framed by Mount Wellington and sits on the River Derwent. Explore the city’s poetically beautiful surroundings via kayak, or try abseiling and surfing for added thrills. And if even that’s not enough, sign up for a Learn-to-fly Experience , gliding over the city in a plane under the guidance of a qualified instructor.

Where to stay: Maylands Lodge is an old landmark property and luxury hotel, just a short drive from the city centre and waterfront, with rooms that feature mountain or garden views.

**Destinations had to be in the top 1,000 most booked on Booking.com between 1 August 2021 and 31 July 2022. The resulting list was sorted by year-over-year increase and destinations with a large decrease in the share of domestic bookings were removed. This was to ensure that the list represents destinations that have managed to maintain domestic interest (as well as international), even in the face of loosening COVID-related travel restrictions.

Booking.com's travel predictions for 2023

Posted by Claudia De Brito on 19 October 2022

Holidays remain at the top of the agenda, according to the travel platform

The latest research by travel platform Booking.com has revealed that travellers will lean into experiential excursions next year amid global uncertainty.

Booking.com commissioned extensive research among more than 24,000 travellers across 32 countries and territories, combining it with its insights as a leading digital travel platform, to predict emerging travel trends.

According to Booking.com’s 2023 Travel Predictions report, travellers are finding themselves in a multi-directional tug-of-war, working to reconcile what is important to them with the demands of everyday life. Taking holidays remains top of their agendas, with 68% of travellers feeling more optimistic about their travel plans in 2023 than in 2022.

Here are the sort of holidays, the majority of respondents are looking for.

Culture Shock Holidays  In 2023, leisure travellers, while budget-conscious, will seek escapism through the pursuit of culture shock experiences. The research found that 58% of travellers are looking to experience ‘out of comfort zone’ travel and 40% want to experience radical culture shock in 2023, be it a completely different cultural experience and language (47%) or exploring lesser-known cities and their hidden gems (24%). With this in mind, industry operators should lean into immersive cultural offerings, from local traditions and cuisine to immersive adventures.

Out-of-city Breaks Out-of-city breaks are also likely to take off, as urban dwellers seek the simplicity that eludes them in busy city life. From rustic retreats to far-flung hideaways, properties that can satisfy a desire for escapism should focus on this when they market themselves, with 33% of travellers wanting a back-to-basics feel experience with only the bare necessities. In addition, 57% also said they were looking for ‘off-the-grid’ style holidays to escape from reality.

Budget Holidays With the cost of living and travel rising, 60% of travellers plan to budget more tightly and take advantage of deals, hacks and smartly timed travel. More than half (56%) will also take advantage of discounts and loyalty schemes. Holiday planning is therefore likely to take longer than in previous years. There is also likely to be a rise in off-peak bookings, as 49% will look outside the usual windows for good deals.

Speaking about the findings, Booking.com senior vice president and chief marketing officer Arjan Dijk said: “While they may be navigating chaos and embracing contradiction, it’s undoubtedly reassuring for the industry to learn that travel is very much back on the agenda in what’s possibly a more exciting and creative way than ever before.

“Despite the global uncertainties, the industry will be strengthened by travellers in search of an escape that takes them out of their own reality. This is the ideal backdrop for a boom in experiential travel. With micro and niche trends, hobbies and personal passions leading the way, we are likely to see tailored experiences taken to the next level, paving the way for operators to explore new territory and the ways their local surroundings can enhance unique adventures for tomorrow’s traveller.”

Booking.com’s Seven Predictions for the Creative Reimagination of Travel in 2023

The leading digital travel platform’s most extensive annual travel predictions research to date foresees people navigating contradiction and chaos in their travel choices.

Preppers in Paradise 30

SINGAPORE, 17 OCTOBER 20 22 –  If 2022 was about the triumphant return of travel, 2023 will be about creatively reimagining it amidst the chaos. People around the world are feeling overwhelmingly more optimistic about travelling in 2023 compared to 2022 and, despite some current instability felt globally, nearly three quarters (72%) report that travelling will always be worth it. The mood is shifting from  one of hopeful uncertainty to bold adaptability. Nothing will be off limits, and everything is on the menu as everyone seeks to find the right balance in a world of contradictions.

To understand how travel will be reimagined in 2023, Booking.com commissioned extensive research with more than 24,000 travellers across 32 countries and territories, 1   combining it with its insights as a leading digital travel platform to reveal seven emerging travel predictions.

At a time of general upheaval, where war, increased societal polarisation, rising inflation and urgent concerns about climate change are all continuing to radically change the world, people are finding themselves in a multi-directional tug-of-war, working to reconcile what is important to them with the demands of everyday life. The 2023 travel predictions reflect this sentiment, revealing that the needs of travellers are moving in a lot of different directions to adapt to changing times.

Glamorizing the Good ol’ Days 13

1.    Saving to Splurge

With the background of globa l economic uncertainty, travellers in Singapore will continue to prioritise travel in 2023, but will be more mindful over how to make the most of their travel budget and what takes precedence. People will still place carefree getaways at the top of their agenda, with half (50%) of travellers saying that investing in a vacation remains a top priority for them. But being budget conscious is key, with nearly seven in ten (70%) travellers continuing to spotlight travel while seekin g more bang for their buck.

2023 will see financially-savvy itinerary curation at its finest, with people planning travel budgets more tightly by taking advantage of deals, hacks and smartly-timed travel (63%) and prioritising value for money with discounts and loyalty programs (64%). Nearly two-thirds (58%) will look to save money by considering off-season destinations or longer routes on the journey, while the majority (66%) will be planning travel more in advance in the hope of securing a better deal. About two-thirds (64%) believe the best use of their budget is to opt for one or two longer vacations instead of several short breaks.

Within this context, many local travellers are also surprisingly prepared to dial up their spend – and even splurge – on the components of their trip that mean the most to them. More than half (53%) admit that they plan to be more indulgent in their spending habits while on vacation to make up for the lack of travel during the last couple of years, while 50% plan to spend lavishly to ensure they maximise their trip, and every experience is worth it.

Delight in the Discomfort Zone 12

2.    Glamourising the Good ol’ Days

Amid global instability and the desire for escapism, people   intend to carve out travel experiences that harken back to simpler times, with nostalgic getaways (90%) that provide the thrill of reliving the glory days top of the wishlist in 2023. There’s a desire   –   even for millennials and Gen-Zs who never lived it   –   to disappear into the romanticism of a pre-digital era, with   nearly a quarter (21%) of travellers chasing experiences that evoke (faux) emotive memories   of days gone past, such as visiting landmarks or attractions featured in iconic retro films or opting for a bus as a primary mode of transport to live the group spirit of school trips. Singapore travellers are no longer forfeiting play in favour of rest and relaxation, increasingly seeking the adrenaline rush of theme parks (60%) and drawing on the imagination with activities such as escape rooms, scavenger hunts and building fortresses with giant building blocks.

With millennials now the parents of young kids, there will be an increase in destinations previously popular in the 80s and 90s such as   Budva   in   Montenegro , a glam alternative to St Tropez for celebs in the 80s or   Bolzano   in   Italy , popular for its retro Christmas markets – both destinations which feature on the list of   2023 trending destinations . Millennial travellers will be first to book emerging era-themed accommodation that transport them back to a time they hold close to their hearts and will likely be doing so with family by their side (54%) with ‘family reunion’ multi-generational trips top of the travel agenda in 2023.

Preppers in Paradise 8

3.    Preppers in Paradise

Camouflaged cabins, campfire cuisine and compasses; going off-grid will never be more sought after than in 2023. A chaotic few years with natural disasters, political unrest and a global pandemic has seen some   lose confidence in the world and the frivolous must-have comforts of our modern lives. Well over a third (39%) of Singapore travellers want their travelling experiences to have a more back-to-basics feel, and are looking for ‘off-grid’ style vacations to escape from reality (58%), and switch off and experience life with only the bare necessities (39%). Travellers are also keen to use travel in 2023 as an opportunity to learn survival skills (60%) including how to source clean water (44%), light a fire from scratch (39%), forage for food in the wild (35%) and even prep for an apocalypse (40%).

Expect to see more eco-friendly, earthly stays springing up to accommodate burnt-out city dwellers searching for simplicity, as well as accommodations offering guidance for guests on how to be more self-sufficient, e.g., sourc ing and preparing their own meals during their stay. An increase in wilderness survival schools where travellers will learn essential skills needed to live through a cataclysmic event are also predicted to pop up around the world.

‘Off-grid’ in 2023 won’t necessarily mean roughing it though. There is a common perception that this means giving up luxuries (59%), however there is a strong desire to combine the two with 57% only considering travelling ‘off-grid’ if it can be at a more indulgent stay.

And how unplugged is off grid really for the traveller of 2023? Close to two-thirds (65%) will have a non-negotiable requirement: phone and internet connection at their destination is essential – so expect this cohort to be weathering the wilderness with 5G.

4.    Virtual Voyagers

It used to be space travel that was ambitious and ‘outer worldly’. But now that’s happened, wh at and where next? With half (50%) of Singapore travellers reporting that they will be turning to virtual reality next year to inspire their vacation choices, travel will enter the ever-evolving 3D virtual space of the Metaverse in earnest in 2023. With over a third (39%) of travellers keen to embark on a multi-day VR or AR travel experience, the Metaverse will be more than ‘try before you buy’; it will educate, entertain, and inspire people, opening the door for infinite adventure. Travellers will no longer be limited by physics and can experiment with different travel experiences in a year when Metaverse worlds will begin replicating and reimaging destinations. Moving beyond 2023, haptic feedback, the use of touch to communicate with us ers, will make virtual travel a truly immersive experience, delivering a credible sense of 3D touch, such as the feel of soft grains of sand and the warmth of the sun.

Travellers will become bolder in their real-life trip choices, after being able to visit them in the Metaverse first via their online avatars – especially handy for those who might feel anxious about trying somewhere new, with 57% more likely to travel to destinations that they wouldn’t have previously considered after virtually experiencing them.

While the Metaverse will offer a new way to experience travel in the year ahead, it still won’t stop people from booking a ticket to their next destination, as more than half (51%) believe that a virtual experience is   not   fulfilling enough to check it off the bucket list.

From Daily Grind to Great Company Escape 7

5.    Delight in the Discomfort Zone

Whether it’s bottled-up energy, pent- up frustration or a new lease  on  life, the world is ready to dive into othe r cultures and new experiences headfirst. Close to half (48%) of Singapore travellers want to experience complete culture shock in 2023 – be it travelling somewhere with completely different cultural experiences and languages (54%) or exploring lesser-known cities with hidden gems that aren’t already on the radar (25%) - including 2023 trending destination Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Sabah on the Malaysian island of Borneo where travellers will be able to immerse themselves in nature, wildlife and the local culture the city offers just a hop, skip and a jump away from Singapore.

Forget the usual favourites, in 2023 travellers will be seeking unique vacations that shock, surprise and delight. With nearly three quarters (79%) looking forward to experiencing ‘out of comfort zone’ travel that pushes them to the limits, there will be an  influx of niche experiences  encouraging  people to push their travel escapades to the extreme.  Nearly half ( 49%) are on the hunt for the world ’s most exotic delicacy such as the hottest chilli pepper, while 38% want to use their vacation for extra-terrestrial exploration on UFO or alien spotting tours.

Unsurprisingly, this   ‘ culture shook ’  traveller is also partial to throwing caution to the wind, with more than a quarter (27%) wanting to buy a one way ticket in 2023 and follow their instinct wherever it takes them .

Travel as Self-care 9

6.    From Daily Grind to Great Company Escape

A step change from the ‘work from anywhere’ policies that are now almost as commonplace as annual leave, employees are increasingly keen to preserve vacation time for complete escapism. A significant amount (70%) want their trips to be strictly work free in 2023, and while half of them (51%) are not interested in working while away, they   would   consider clocking in for a company retreat or trip.

As such, travelling  for business  will be back  on the agenda  in 2023 . But unlike the business trips BC (before COVID), employees are seeking more opportunities to build  team camaraderie in real life – and away from the office – reflecting a growing demand to incorporate work travel with productive play. In fact, 48% of the Singapore workforce is looking forward to their employer planning a ‘real life’ work trip to bring people together and just over half (55%) would like to see their employer use the money saved from the shift to remote/hybrid working models spent on corporate travel or retreats.

In response, 2023 will see a rise in destination business retreats  where the focus will be on strengthening relationships and corporate recreation rather than work.  Employers will gamify the retreat experience and immerse staff in a world where teamwork is the only option. Think ‘survivor’ themed trips at luxury cabins or country farmhouses complete with communal cooking and outdoor adventure activities, or crime-centric escapes where spy school, detective courses or CSI simulations double as a sight-seeing scavenger hunt.

Businesses stand to see benefits, too –   close to two-thirds (62%) of  workers in Singapore believe exploring new places will inspire them to be more productive  at  work.

Back to Travel 1

7.    Peaceful Pilgrimages

Travel is set to take ‘mind, body and soul’ wellness to the next level in 2023 – a fully immersive, no-holds-barred approach to attaining peace and pleasure including less conventional ways to feel bliss. Seeking to recentre the mind, meditation and mindfulness getaways are ever popular with Singapore travellers (45%), while more than two in five (42%) aim to find peace at a silent retreat and close to two-fifths (39%) are keen to go on a health hiatus that focuses on mental health, transformative health or that helps with life milestones such as menopause or pregnancy.

Laura Houldsworth, Managing Director for Asia Pacific at Booking.com comments:   “If the last few years have taught us anything it’s that travel should not be taken for granted. This year’s travel predictions research shows the undercurrent of intentional paradoxical behaviours that will put us all more comfortably in the driving seat amid relentless instability. It also demonstrates a desire for travel to be a way to seek unapologetic moments of happiness and escapism to counteract the heavy realities of our news feeds. As such, at Booking.com our aim will continue to be to make it easier for everyone to seek their unique travel bliss in a more personalised and connected way in the year ahead and beyond.”

These Are the Biggest Travel Trends of 2023, According to the President of American Express Travel

What are people really traveling for in 2023?

travel trends 2023 booking.com

If 2022 was the year of wading back into travel, then 2023 is the year of diving in head first. According to a recently released report by American Express Travel, a majority of respondents say they not only plan to take more trips this year than last, but they will also spend more money on travel in 2023 than in 2022.

“As people continue to be eager to take trips, we are seeing a huge emphasis on experiences, especially ones that are personalized and centered around travelers’ passions,” says Audrey Hendley, president of American Express Travel , in an interview with Travel + Leisure.

One common theme among travelers worldwide: The continued "rise of 'set-jetting,'" per the report, a.k.a. destination decisions that are heavily influenced by a binge-worthy show or Hollywood film. Entertainment-focused tourism has been on the rise, and the year ahead may see more than ever before. Seventy percent of Gen Z and millennial respondents agree that they have "been inspired to travel to a destination after seeing it featured in a TV show, news source, or movie."

While Amex’s report doesn’t mention specific programs, Hendley tells T+L that “people are booking trips to destinations like Yellowstone, Paris, or Sicily after being inspired by their favorite TV shows.” It isn’t difficult to surmise that travelers are seeking out the cities, hotels, and experiences that were featured in shows such as The White Lotus, Yellowstone, and Emily in Paris, among others.

The Amex-commissioned study also explored overall travel behaviors and trip planning, with participants from a diverse array of seven countries (Australia, Canada, Mexico, Japan, India, the United Kingdom, and the United States).

In addition to “set-jetting,” there’s a renewed emphasis on food-focused travel, wellness and self-care on vacation, and traveling off the beaten path. Surveyed travelers say they want to shop at small businesses and spend more during a vacation if they know it supports the local community.

Tying all of that together are younger travelers at the heart of these trends. According to the report, 84 percent of Gen Z-ers and millennials surveyed would rather take a dream vacation than purchase a new luxury item, and 79 percent agree that travel is an important budget priority. “Younger generations are showing the strongest numbers across our trends. We are paying close attention to (Gen Z and millennials) since their habits and interests will continue to shape the face of travel,” Hendley notes.

While travel during the past several years may have been difficult to predict, especially with changing COVID-19 travel rules, the world is much easier to roam in 2023. Even one of the strictest borders, China, fully reopened to tourists in mid-March and is issuing tourist visas once again. This increased travel flexibility means longer-term bookings are also making a comeback.

Nik West/Getty Images

“We’re seeing growth in long-term bookings across all generations, with almost 7-in-10 of survey respondents stating they like to plan trips three to six months in advance,” Hendley shares. “We are also seeing an increase in people booking big trips, which people typically book further in advance.”

Booking.com 2023 Sustainable Travel Report

Cost vs conscience: booking.com delves into the dilemma dividing sustainable travel in 2023.

76% of travellers express a desire to travel more sustainably Environmentally-conscious habits are growing in popularity 67% turn off air conditioning when not in use, driven in part by cost reduction needs 60% reuse towels for similar reasons 500,000+ accommodations globally are being recognized for their sustainability efforts with a Travel Sustainable badge on Booking.com

travel trends 2023 booking.com

  • Nearly half (49%) of travelers believe more sustainable travel options are too expensive, in contrast to 43% willing to pay extra for travel options with a sustainable certification.
  • Taking conscious habits from home when traveling, 67% now turn off the air conditioning in accommodations when they aren’t there (up 29% from 2022), while 60% re-use the same towel multiple times (up 25% from 2022)

At a time of general global uncertainty, traveling more sustainably continues to be front of mind for travelers, with three-quarters (74%) believing people need to act now and make more sustainable choices to save the planet for future generations. The news continues to be a key influence driver for 53%, who say the recent climate change news agenda has encouraged them to be more sustainable, and yet it also speaks to a quandary facing people when it comes to being more mindful about when, where and how they travel. While nearly half (49%) think the environment will get worse in the next six months, 64% believe the cost of living crisis will also get worse, leaving people unsure of what to prioritize as they work to reconcile what is important to them with the demands of everyday life.

The economic weather has changed drastically since last year, and the big topics at the front of people’s minds today are the cost of living crisis and the climate crisis. Over three quarters (76%) of travelers say they want to travel more sustainably over the coming 12 months, while the same amount think the global energy crisis and rising cost of living is impacting their spending plans. For some travelers the two are mutually exclusive.

With rising inflation, nearly half of travelers are stuck in the notion that they must make a choice between sustainability and spending, with 49% believing more sustainable travel options are too expensive (up 11% from Booking.com’s 2022 data). For these respondents, sustainability and travel combined can seem non-urgent when they are worried about affording bills and the energy crisis.

On the flip side, with travel well and truly back for others and a more urgent focus on conscious choices, 43% of today’s travelers would be willing to pay more for travel options with a sustainable certification , dialing up their spend to feel reassured they are driving impact. As an increasing number of travelers feel the pinch, they are seeking more sustainable travel options rich in rewards, highlighting the perceived trade-off between making conscious choices and saving money and the need for incentivization. Nearly half (49%) want discounts and economic incentives in order to opt for eco-friendly options (up 12% from 2022) while 42% would be encouraged to travel more sustainably with reward points for making more sustainable choices that they could use for free extra perks or discounts through online travel booking sites.

More sustainable travel for everyone

As part of Booking.com’s mission to make it easier for everyone to experience the world, the company believes they have an important responsibility to make sustainable choices easier, both for accommodation providers and travelers. The company’s Travel Sustainable badge provides travelers with an easy-to-understand way to identify a wider range of more sustainable stays. The initiative launched in 2021 and is available to any kind of property from apartments to hotels and even treehouses that have implemented a combination of sustainable practices that meet the requisite impact threshold for their destination. With more than 500,000 properties globally now being highlighted for their sustainability efforts with a Travel Sustainable badge on Booking.com, the company has also further expanded the number of third-party certifications and labels that automatically qualify accommodations to receive it. [ this includes accommodations certified by GSTC-Accredited Certification Bodies and accommodations that are verified to a GSTC-Recognized Standard].

“While travel may be back, rising living costs and climate anxiety has led to greater demand for more budget and planet-friendly options,” said Glenn Fogel, CEO of Booking.com. “Travel can be a force for good and travelers themselves are proving to be today’s changemakers, adopting more sustainable travel habits and seeking responsible experiences. We are listening and together with our partners across the industry, we are leading positive change and examining every part of the trip to support travelers and benefit local communities and environments. More sustainable travel is an investment for the world, and we are committed to making it easier for everyone to experience travel in a more mindful and responsible way, no matter where they are on their sustainability journey.”

Travel could be a good deal this summer. Here's when plane ticket prices will peak.

travel trends 2023 booking.com

Spring is springing and according to Hopper, it’s time to start thinking about your summer vacation plans.

New data from the online booking site shows some favorable trends for travelers in the next few months, including slightly lower airfares compared to 2023, and hotel and car rental prices that are more or less flat year-over-year.

Here’s what you need to know as you prepare to book, whether you’re looking to take a domestic getaway or go on an overseas adventure. It’s also not too late to take advantage of deals on some last-minute trips.

How much are spring and summer plane tickets?

According to Hopper, the best deals right now are on domestic airline tickets. Round-trip flights within the U.S. are averaging $290 in April, but prices are expected to rise in the months ahead.

Hopper’s data shows prices for domestic flights will peak between May and June at $315 on average, and then will gradually fall through the summer, reaching a low of $264 on average in September.

On a call with investors discussing first-quarter earnings Wednesday, Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian said summer travel demand has been pushed forward in recent years due in part to schools, especially in the South, finishing their summer breaks earlier in the year.

Is airport Wi-Fi safe to use? How to keep your information safe while traveling.

Short vs. long cruises: Which one is right for you? Here's how they compare.

This summer will also be a good time to travel internationally, with Hopper data showing fares to most destinations abroad down compared to last year.

“Airfare to international destinations continues to improve following two years of bloated prices due to quickly recovering demand, high fuel prices and supply constraints. Airfare to most major regions of the world has dropped compared to last year with the exception of trips to Canada,” Hayley Berg, Hopper’s chief economist, said in the report. “International fares remain higher than pre-pandemic levels to most regions, as higher fuel prices persist and airlines continue to rebuild capacity to many regions.”

How much will a hotel room for the spring and summer cost?

Hotel prices remain more or less flat compared to the same time last year. Rooms in the U.S. are averaging $206 per night currently, with even better deals available in some trending international destinations like Osaka, Japan and Istanbul, Turkey.

According to Hopper, Las Vegas, New York and Chicago remain popular destinations in the U.S.

Will car rental prices go up this summer?

Car rental prices also haven’t gone up much since last year, averaging $42 per day currently, according to Hopper.

The report shows that most travelers rent a car for about four days and warm weather destinations like Orlando and Los Angeles remain popular pickup points.

Google unveils top 20 summer vacation destinations for 2024 | See full list HERE

G oogle has revealed its top 20 summer 2024 travel destinations. The ranking is based on the most popular vacation locations that Americans look up on Google Flights when planning a trip between June 1 and August 31. With "Good Morning America," the internet behemoth revealed findings derived from historical travel ticket data and search trends.

There are many hip and unusual places on the list. Google claims that the largest shift from 2023 is that Tokyo jumped from number eight to number three, while Cancun fell from the second to the sixth position. London is the most preferred location for summer 2024, followed in second place by Paris, which will host the Summer Olympics in 2024.

Here's the full list of top summer 2024 destinations on Google flights:

  • Los Angeles
  • Fort Lauderdale

According to ABC News, the internet behemoth surveys US customers from mid-January to mid-March to see what questions they have about travel before the summer. According to the outlet, the terms "travel itinerary" and "solo travel" saw an all-time high in January search volume.

Two of the top trending "weekend getaway" destinations are Palm Springs and Florida Keys. The top trending "romantic getaway" destinations were Napa in California and Key West in Florida. La Romana and Saint John were the top trending destinations searched with all-inclusive resorts.

Meanwhile, Google Flights unveiled a new tool last year to assist travelers in finding less expensive flights. This tool provides advice from Google on when to book flights to save the most money. For instance, the new information may inform you that you are now in the sweet spot—two months prior to travel is often the least expensive period to book such vacations. Alternatively, you may discover that costs typically decrease closer to takeoff and choose to postpone booking. In any case, you'll be more confident when you make that choice.
