Cleaner mopping floor

TfL cleaners, caterers and security staff to get free transport in London

Sadiq Khan taking ‘unprecedented’ action to ease financial pressure for lowest-paid transport workers

Workers who clean the underground and other public transport in London are to be given free travel, Sadiq Khan has announced.

The mayor of London has asked Transport for London to extend free travel on the capital’s public transport for the lowest-paid contract workers, as well as for catering and security staff. The move will benefit about 5,000 workers who were not previously eligible for free travel.

Khan said he was taking the “unprecedented” action to ease the financial pressure faced by the lowest-paid transport workers. He has also asked TfL to look into whether sick pay standards for low-earning workers could be improved, and to conduct work early next year to assess TfL’s ability to bring cleaning services in house.

Khan said: “London’s transport workers, who did so much for us during the pandemic, continue to play an essential and much valued role in keeping our city’s transport network safe and operating.

“I’m deeply concerned about the fact the spiralling cost of living is hitting those on lower incomes the hardest. That’s why I’m taking unprecedented action to support London’s lowest-paid transport workers by removing the cost of using public transport.

“I will continue to do everything I can to help Londoners with spiralling costs, including providing targeted support directly to those on lower incomes, and to prevent financial inequalities widening further so we can continue to build a better, fairer and more prosperous city for all Londoners.”

Mick Lynch, general secretary of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union, said: “We warmly welcome this news, which is a victory for our campaigning and a big step forward in our campaign to win justice for London’s tube cleaners.”

TfL allows non-emergency ambulance, police and fire vehicles in London bus lanes but say it won't disrupt journeys

Officials say bus and black cab journeys won't be affected and more patients will be able to make it to appointments

Travel bosses have reassured London bus and cab users that allowing more than 8,000 non-emergency ambulances, police and fire vehicles across the city to use bus lanes on London’s main arterial roads will not result in higher journey times for commuters. This follows a successful trial with Guy’s and St Thomas’ Foundation Trust that officials say resulted in 20 per cent fewer missed appointments , and no effect on buses nor black cabs.

From today (Friday, May 19), the vehicles are able to use bus routes to get around after a successful trial saw more than 150 non-blue light patient transport vehicles given access to over 25km of bus lanes in Lambeth, Southwark , Wandsworth and Lewisham on the TfL road network (TLRN). It also included bus lanes managed by Lambeth Council, taking place over 12 months from February 2022.

NHS bosses say the number of missed NHS appointments fell and saved money as well as benefited patients who are unable to use public transport to attend appointments.

A Tfl spokesperson said: the Metropolitan Police Service, the London Fire Brigade and the London Ambulance Service will benefit from less congestion and faster journey times, helping to provide a better service to all Londoners. Outpatients who rely on patient transport at all the capital’s hospitals will now be less likely to miss appointments with knock-on savings for the trusts themselves, and improved health outcomes for many patients.

TfL has continued to ensure the bus network is reliable and brought in measures to reduce journey times, previously confirming that 85km of bus lanes on the capital’s busiest roads would be in operation 24 hours a day. As part of its Bus Action Plan TfL has committed an additional 25km of bus lanes, contributing to the wider goal of increasing bus speeds by 10 per cent.

Christina Calderato, director of transport strategy & policy at TfL, said: “Bus lanes have a proven track record of speeding up journeys, and we’re delighted to see further benefits in this trial for Guy’s and St Thomas’ and thousands of its patients. We look forward now to more patients across the capital being able to get to their appointments on time and supporting the vital work of the other emergency services, be it a forensics van needing to get to a crime scene or London Fire Brigade equipment needing to be in the right place at the right time.”

Seb Dance, Deputy Mayor for Transport, said: “Making journeys in the capital quicker and more efficient is a key priority of the Mayor’s. The trial of this initiative resulted in quicker journey times for vulnerable patients, without any negative impact on bus journey times.

“I'm pleased we’ve been able to support our colleagues in the emergency services and help improve patients' experience too. We look forward to working with London boroughs to implement it even more widely.”

Ian Abbs, Chief Executive of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Missing appointments is hugely frustrating for our patients and staff, so we are really pleased that this trial with TfL has reduced journey times by up to 16 per cent. It is brilliant that this initiative is being rolled out more widely, meaning even more patients will benefit.”
