🚑 Should I buy Australian travel insurance?

100% YES!  — Australia has “free” healthcare but it’s only for citizens and permanent residents. Foreigners visiting need travel insurance in case anything happens on their visit. I like SafetyWing  – their Nomad Insurance starts at just $1.50 USD a day!

🚗 Should I rent a car in Australia?

Yes  —  Renting a car  is a necessity in most of Australia! If you want to go on road trips or adventures outside of the major cities, and even if you’re staying in a major city, you’ll want to rent a car. If you are visiting Margaret River, it will be even more important that you hire a car, you’ll need it to be able to get around and see all the great attractions and wineries!

🏨 What’s the best way to book my Australian accommodation?

My go-to for Australian hotels is  Booking.com . Pretty much all registered accommodation use Booking.com (but not necessarily any of the other major booking platforms), and even most of the holiday homes and caravan parks use Booking.com too!

If you’re planning a trip to Australia where you will stay at multiple locations, it’s super handy to have all your accommodation listed in one place, and accommodation owners like Booking.com because it’s easy to contact the guests using the messaging platform if the guest has an international phone number.

I sincerely hope you enjoy your visit to Margaret River!

Thrombolites in Yalgorup National Park – 1.5 Hours South of Perth CBD

Thrombolites (or living rocks) are easily seen from a short boardwalk and make for a great break in a from Perth to Margaret River road trip.

Also known as the Lake Clifton Thrombolites, these strange ‘out of this world’ structures are very curious. They are stunning in the early morning or sunset light!

Plus for little explorers, the science and history behind it can make a great lesson. The thrombolite-building micro-organisms are minuscule. They are impossible for the eye to see but they look like the earliest forms of life on earth. Scientists have used thrombolites to understand micro-organisms and understand the earliest forms of life on earth.

It is not known why the thrombolites form at Lake Clifton, but it is possibly because the lake is associated with small shoots of fresh groundwater that is high in calcium carbonate.

To get to Lake Clifton, you have to take the Old Coast Road by going through Mandurah (not the new Bypass).  Look for the turnoff 25km south of Mandurah.

If you feel like exploring a bit more there is a 5km, 2 hours return, easy to walk hiking trail around the edge of Lake Clifton.

Perth To Margaret River Places To Stop Bunbury

Bunbury – 2 Hours South of Perth CBD

One of Western Australia’s biggest regional centers, Bunbury, seems to be looked over in people’s rush to get to “Marg’s” (as Margaret River is affectionately known)! This is a mistake in our opinion as Bunbury has a lot to offer.

The Dolphin Center at Koombana Bay is a must-stop place on your way from Perth to Margaret River in the summer months. December to March has frequent visits from dolphins. Though, as they are wild dolphins the times, can’t be guaranteed. Check here for more information on the Dolphin Cruises in Bunbury .

If you love street art, Bunbury is filled with it. We had an enjoyable break in the drive going for a walk in this big, country town. Y Travel blog has covered their Top Things to do in Bunbury here.

Take note that when you are traveling south from Perth to Margaret River there is a bypass around Bunbury city. You have to follow the signs for the city center.

Day One – Best of Margaret River Itinerary

9 am Depart Perth

As you drive south you will be on a major freeway to Bunbury, about 2 hours’ drive.

We recommend a stop at the Koombana Bay Dolphin Discovery Centre in the warmer months of the year as there is a chance to see local dolphins who visit in the mornings between 8 am and 12 noon. Keep in mind these are wild animals and no time can be guaranteed!

road trip margaret river to perth

From Bunbury continue to the delicious 3 Oceans for lunch. We’ve chosen it because it’s on the main highway and is just less than 3 hours driving from Perth. There are great lawns for the kids to run on, and some great wines to taste.

If beers are more to your taste, another option is the Cowramup Brewing Company. This is a family-owned Microbrewery with a wholesome menu featuring local produce. If you like to know what goes into your beer, they also offer a behind the scenes tour.

Or, if you have packed your lunch and are looking for an ice-cream as a treat, why not stop at Millers Ice Cream . They have a great playground and the kids liked milking the cows there!

3 Day Perth To Margaret River Itinerary, Cowaramup

Heading south with a full stomach you will be glad to get out of the car for a walk and enjoy the cows at Cowramup. Our kids love to pose with them, you can take as little as 20 minutes or much longer. If the kids need a little sugar fix, then head to the Candy Cow.

As it’s already been a long day, we recommend heading south and enjoying your accommodation.

Day 2 – Explore the Best South of Margaret River

Today you will head south of Margaret River.

The first stop is Hamelin Bay, a gorgeous white sand beach with a picture-perfect remainder of a jetty for some Insta perfect photos. Most famous for the Hamelin Bay stingrays, these friendly locals visit nearly every day in summer – usually in the early morning. They don’t like rough or windy weather which is why you are less likely to see them in winter.

We also enjoyed a walk up onto the cliffs above the jetty to enjoy spectacular views of this amazing coastline.

Pinky Beach Rottnest Island Perth Western Australia

Perth to Margaret River: 1-week Western Australia road trip itinerary

Every year, millions and millions of travellers are drawn across the world to Australia, exploring immensely popular sites from the Great Barrier Reef and Gold Coast to bustling Sydney and Melbourne— but a small fraction of these visitors ever make it over to Western Australia and its capital Perth, a 41-hour drive from Sydney and a 4-6hr flight from most East Coast cities. Speak to anyone who’s visited WA, though, and they’ll practically shout it at you: this is the most spectacular part of Australia.

White sand beaches with impossibly clear water, charming convict-era towns and tree-lined cities, dramatic cliffs and canyons, abundant marine life from stingrays to whale sharks, one of the country’s top yielding wine regions, and a whole lot of jaw-dropping scenery awaits in WA, and best of all there are hardly any tourists to share it with.

Western Australia occupies more than one-third of the country’s total land mass, so suffice to say you’d need years to properly explore every inch of the place, but with just 1 week up your sleeve, you can still do justice to Perth and the South West. Use this itinerary to plan the ultimate visit to WA, taking in sights from Perth and Rottnest Island to Yallingup and Margaret River. Prepare to be amazed.

What's in this travel guide

Road trip logistics

When to visit south western australia.

Given their southerly position in WA, Perth, Yallingup, and Margaret River’s beaches are all best enjoyed in summer, early autumn, or late spring   (around October-March) , when the weather and water will be warmer.

If you’re not fussed about getting in the ocean (although you really should!), shoulder season can often be a good option, with months outside of December, January, and February offering cheaper prices and fewer visitors.

Getting to Perth

Most all visitors to Perth will arrive via plane into  Perth Airport , which has regular flights from all major Australian cities, as well as direct flights from London, South Africa, the Middle East, and heaps of cities in Asia.

Due to open in 2020,  the new Forrestfield-Airport Link train line will make it super easy to get between the city and Perth Airport (stay up to date on the progress  here ), but I’d definitely suggest hiring a car instead.

Getting around Western Australia

To get the most out of a trip to South West Australia,  I’d strongly recommend hiring a car and following this road trip itinerary.  As long as you’re over 25, car hire is surprisingly cheap in Australia!

There are 8  hire car companies at Perth Airport , including Hertz, Avis, and Enterprise, but there are also cheaper companies located just off site.  Ace Rental Cars  has a fleet of slightly older cars (around 5-10 years old, but still perfectly safe) and has far better prices as a result.

Road trip budget

  • Flights from Sydney/Melbourne to Perth: $350-650 (return) depending on time of year
  • Accommodation for 7 nights: about $600 for 2 people based on this itinerary
  • Car hire for 7 days: $180 with Ace Rental Cars (to get the best price, decline insurance if your credit card includes its own rental insurance)
  • Fuel: less than $100 following this itinerary
  • Wine tasting tour: $170 with Margaret River Tours
  • Food: it’s hard to give an estimate of total food costs, but nice lunch/dinner out in Perth or Margaret River is typically $35-70, whereas pub meals are more like $15-25

*Overview: recommended itinerary

  • Perth & Fremantle  (2-3 days)
  • Rottnest Island (1-2 days)
  • Yallingup & Busselton  (1-2 days)
  • Margaret River  (2-3 days)

Buildings Perth CBD Elizabeth Quay Western Australia

Elizabeth Quay in Perth

Perth & Fremantle

Perth may be the world’s most isolated city, but it’s still an awesome place to spend a few days, its abundant greenspaces and relaxed WA vibes making it feel more like a large town than a state capital with 1.9 million people. Sparkling Elizabeth Quay , a relatively new development on the foreshore between Perth CBD and the Swan River, is one of the best places to explore, as is enormous King’s Park, one of the world’s largest inner city parks , which overlooks the whole city. Read more about what to do in Perth in this post.

Just 25min southwest of Perth CBD  (and still considered to be part of the Perth metro area), Fremantle is another incredible destination, this enchanting 19th century port town on the Indian Ocean a favourite among visitors. In addition to its old-world charm,  Freo  (as it’s affectionately referred to by the locals)  is an epicentre for arts and culture in Western Australia , attracting a variety of musical and visual talents to the popular  Fremantle Markets , as well as hip local boutiques, trendy cafes, and  craft breweries .  Take a few days to get to know Perth and Fremantle before hopping in the car and continuing the adventure down the coast.

Recommended time:  2-3 days

Highlights:  Check out the view from King’s Park and explore the Botanic Gardens ; go wine tasting in the Swan Valley ; go for lunch at  Island Brew House in Elizabeth Quay or enjoy cocktails from  The Reveley’s  rooftop bar; sail a catamaran on the Swan River; go for a dip at Cottesloe Beach ; explore the artsy Fremantle Markets

Getting there:  Drive 20min from Perth Airport to the CBD or 35min to Fremantle

Where to stay:  There are heaps of options for accomodation in Perth, ranging from  budget hostels like  Spinner’s Backpackers  to upscale hotels like  Quay Perth , but my personal recommendation is to stay in Fremantle, about 25min SW of Perth CBD.  Federal Hotel  is set right in the middle of town in a large colonial building  with a bustling on-site bar and restaurant, offering spacious, air-conditioned rooms for about $70/night.

Rottnest Island

Quokka Rottnest Island Western Australia

Quokka on Rottnest Island

Easily accessible via a quick, inexpensive ferry from either Perth or Fremantle , the next stop on your itinerary is Rottnest Island , or “Rotto” as the locals say. This little island off the coast perfectly showcases the rugged, untouched beauty of Australia’s South West, and is one of only a few places in the world where you can see quokkas , the adorable little marsupials that have gained internet fame for smiling in selfies alongside giddy tourists.

Rottnest Island is simply spectacular , so if time allows, stay overnight to discover every corner of this 11km island. Even as a day trip, though, Rotto will not disappoint, and is best explored on 2 wheels (there are no private vehicles on the island). Bike hire is just $30 for the entire day , allowing you to zip around to all the best swimming beaches, fantastic snorkelling bays, adorable quokkas, and vibrant pink lakes in your own time. For more ideas of exactly what to see and do on Rotto,  check out this post.

Recommended time:  1-2 days

Highlights:  Spot adorable, smiley quokkas around the island and pose for a selfie; go for a swim in perfectly clear water at Pinky Beach, the Basin, or Parker Point ; snorkel with colourful marine life at Little Salmon Bay or Parker Point; cycle past vibrant Pink Lake

Getting there:  From Perth or Fremantle, 3 different ferry companies sail over to Rotto— I’d recommend travelling  mid-week with either  SeaLink Rottnest or Rottnest Express  from B Shed in Fremantle , as these tickets are the cheapest ($30 return + $19 Government Admission Fee) and this trip is also the quickest (25min).

Where to stay:  There are a variety of places to stay on Rotto, from budget camping to upscale hotels (and you can read all about the different areas to stay and accomodation options in this post ). I’d recommend staying at Discovery Holiday Park for $274-489/night or the Premium Units  at Geordie Bay/Thomson Bay for $143-330/night.

Yallingup & Busselton

After spending a few days exploring Perth, Fremantle, and incredible Rottnest Island, head several hours down the coast to the Yallingup & Busselton region , home to some of South West Australia’s most jaw-dropping white sand beaches. There are heaps of beautiful spots to enjoy here, including a frothing swimming hole at Injidup Natural Spa , the 1.8km Busselton Jetty and its vibrant underwater reef , and impossibly picturesque Meelup Beach .

In addition to a stunning coastline, Busselton and surrounds are also home to a number of wineries and world-class restaurants well worth a visit — although named after Margaret River in the south, this wine region actually extends well up into Busselton and there are dozens of cellar doors to enjoy before heading down to Margs (or even along the drive).

Highlights:  Watch the sunset over the Indian Ocean at Sugarloaf Rock ; walk the 123km Cape to Cape Track from Cape Naturaliste to Cape Leeuwin; walk along the Southern Hemisphere’s longest jetty or go snorkelling under Busselton Jetty ; walk through Ngilgi Cave ; ride some of Australia’s best surf breaks at Smiths, Three Bears, Super Tubes, Injidup, or Rabbits Beach

Getting there:  Drive 3hrs from Perth to Busselton

Where to stay: The basic but clean and comfortable Busselton Motel offers free on-site parking and is centrally located in Busselton, about $120/night for a double room.

Stingrays at Hamelin Bay

Margaret River

Finally, make the short drive from Yallingup down to Margaret River, where more than 200 vineyards, hundreds of award-winning wines, and countless cellar doors  have made this otherwise tiny town one of the main destinations in WA.

But Margaret River isn’t just for wine lovers— among several hundred award-winning wine estates, Margaret River is also home to some of Australia’s most spectacular white sand beaches and best surf breaks , infinite secluded swimming holes, a thriving food and art scene, and a real abundance of stingrays, kangaroos, and even migrating humpback whales. Check out all the best things to do in Margaret River in this post.

I’d recommend doing a wine tasting tour on your first day in town and then spending the following days visiting a few cellar doors in the morning, indulging in a fabulous lunch, and then hitting the beach in the afternoon. It’ll feel all too soon when you do leave Margaret River, but the 3hr drive up to Perth Airport is easy and stops along the way at Bunbury Markets or Black Diamond Lake offer the perfect finale to an amazing week in Western Australia.

Highlights:  Go wine tasting at award-winning estates like   Leeuwin ,  McHenry Hohnen , and  Vasse Felix ; sample some of the region’s best food at Will’s Domain or Xanadu ; snorkel with stingrays and eagle rays at Hamelin Bay Beach

Getting there:  Drive 40min from Yallingup to Margaret River

Where to stay:  Grab an Airbnb in central Margaret River for an inexpensive, homey experience.

Everything’s close together in the Swan Valley, making it an ideal do-it-yourself, self-drive food and wine trail. Start yours with a visit to one of the region’s founding wine families, Talijancich Wines , then head next door to The House of Honey & Meadery .

After a sunny lunch at Feral Brewing Co. , stop in for a seated tasting at the region’s only certified organic winery, Harris Organic Wines , hosted by owner and winemaker Duncan Harris. Your final stop is Old Young’s Distillery , where traditional liquor-making techniques meet experimental curiosity.

Stay: Check in at The Colony at Mandoon Estate , situated just off the Swan River. The Colony is made up of 32 contemporary rooms overlooking the Mandoon vineyard, with direct access to the microbrewery, restaurant and cellar door. Dinner, sorted.

Unmissable experience

Weather permitting, one of the best ways to experience the magical slice of Cape Naturaliste coastline is aboard local skipper Luke Johnston’s yacht with Sailing Charters WA .

  • Drive time: Three hours to Dunsborough, 15 minutes to Bunker Bay.

Depart for Dunsborough in time for lunch at Aaron Carr’s much-lauded restaurant, Yarri . Full of delicious food, cruise out along Cape Naturaliste Road, stopping for a swim at Castle Rock Beach and Meelup Beach. Indulge in a post-lunch cocktail at the country-chic Meelup Farmhouse before continuing on to Sugarloaf Rock , the cape’s crowning jewel.

Stay : Toward the tip of Cape Naturaliste, you’ll find tonight’s accommodation: Pullman Bunker Bay . It’s everything loved about world-class resort luxury, barefoot style. For dinner, there’s Pullman’s ocean-view restaurant, or organise a private in-house dining experience in advance with chef George Cooper’s Tiller Dining for something unique.

Day 3: Bunker Bay to Margaret River via Yallingup

Many of the cellar doors, winery restaurants and breweries in Swan Valley and the Margaret River region are closed or ‘by appointment only’ on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Check opening hours in advance.

  • Drive time:  25 minutes to Yallingup, 35 minutes to Margaret River.

After breakfast at Bunkers Beach House , drive back to Dunsborough and take the winding, tree-lined Caves Road to Yallingup . Just before reaching town, stop in at Ngilgi Cave for a quick semi-guided tour of its ancient caverns. In Yallingup, take a swim in the bay and watch surfers catch one of the region’s most historic waves. You can also stock up on woodfired sourdough before commencing the day’s cellar door trail in the famed Margaret River.

First, visit two family-run spots: Wild Hop Brewing for a beer, and organic winery Blind Corner to taste and stock up on wines for the week. Loop back to Caves Road and, at the end of a nondescript gravel road, you’ll find Arimia for lunch. Here, owner Ann Spencer and chef Evan Hayter run an off-grid kitchen, serving seasonal food grown on the property. Be sure to try the trout.

From here, Caves Road offers a roaming lesson in Margaret River wine history, with visits to Pierro (chardonnay heroes), Cullen (biodynamic champions), and Vasse Felix , where the region’s first vines were planted in 1967.

Catch an ocean sunset with a 20-minute drive to Surfer’s Point in Prevelly, before dinner at  Miki’s Open Kitchen in Margaret River town. Book yourself in for the late sitting, and bring a bottle of the day’s best wine – it’s BYO. Chef Mikihito Nagai’s multi-course degustation menu combines Japanese cooking techniques with Margaret River ingredients to delicious effect.

Stay: Look no further than Moonrise Farm , situated just east of Margaret River town. Rustic, cosy cottages – complete with rainwater, wood fires and barbecues – dot five hectares of towering gum trees and orchard. Seriously, this place is straight out of Country Style .

If it’s a Saturday, slip out early to the Margaret River Farmer’s Market , then head home for a breakfast of fresh eggs, organic sourdough, artisan jams and local cheese.

Grab a coffee in town at Sidekick Cafe before hitting Gracetown (a 20-minute drive) for a swim and a walk along the Cape to Cape Track to South Point and beyond. Make your way back to Moonrise, visiting Olio Bello , Margaret River Chocolate Company and Margaret River Dairy Company on the way.

Spend your afternoon long lunching at Voyager Estate with chef Santiago Fernandez. If it’s on offer, marron is a must-try here.

By night, join a walking food tour with ex-journalist Kellie Tannock’s Walk Talk Taste . You’ll fill up on food, wine, cocktails and stories about the town’s history.

Day 5: Margaret River to Augusta

Whale watching near Augusta, Western Australia © Tourism Western Australia

Did you know?

Augusta sits at the most southwestern tip of Western Australia, where the turquoise Indian Ocean starts to clash with Southern Ocean swells. Visit from late May until the end of August for whale watching.

  • Drive time : 45 minutes.

After check-out, enjoy breakfast in town at Riversmith , then jump on Caves Road heading south. Visit McHenry Hohnen for an en-route wine tasting, before arriving at the breathtaking Boranup Karri Forest and Lake Cave on foot.

Lunch today is just over halfway on your route, and is a paddock-to-plate affair at family farm Glenarty Road – think woodfired seasonal vegetables, warm sourdough, fresh lamb, gnocchi and pickled goods. It’s worth doing a vineyard tour here, too: there are pop-up tasting bars throughout the property so you can taste wines among the vines from which they’re made.

Make a late-afternoon visit to Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse for one of the region’s most iconic ocean views, followed by dinner at The Colourpatch Seafood Cafe in Augusta overlooking the soothing Seine Bay. Continue your regional food education by ordering some Augusta whiting and ocean-grown abalone.

Stay: Get yourself a chalet at the Turner Caravan Park right by the water in town, or a bell tent at Boogaloo Retreat .

Day 6: Augusta to Busselton

Cosy Corner, Augusta, WA © Tourism Western Australia

  • Drive time : about one hour.

Cruise north along the Busselton Highway to the sleepy town of Witchcliffe (25 minutes) for a light breakfast and coffee at Yardbyrd . Continue to Cowaramup (15 minutes), visiting Colonial Brewing on the way. In Cowaramup, stock up on take-home goods at Gourmet Food Merchant and enjoy a delicious fish burger for lunch at Black Sheep Deli . Make another brewery stop on the other side of town at Beerfarm , where you will find a range of limited-edition collaboration brews to try, before heading onto Busselton for the night.

Stay: Stylish, contemporary and warm, Busselton’s Amelia Park Lodge is the ideal base. Enjoy dinner at the on-site restaurant or tavern, and head into town for drinks at The Goose or The Fire Station .

Day 7: Busselton to Perth

  • Drive time : about 2.5 hours.

Enjoy a final breakfast in Busselton at Bistro Breton and a dip in Geographe Bay. You can’t leave town without taking a walk out to the end of the 1.8 kilometre-long (1.1-mile)  Busselton Jetty – don’t worry, you can jump on the jetty train back. Pile into the car for one last drive back to Perth, or, if you want more, explore a neighbouring region. Southern Forests jaunt, anyone?

I really want to visit Bungle bungles in September.

I cannot figure out whether I can get a tour that takes us there for 2 nights and actually incorporates all the things we want to do/isn’t super slow and we have freedom to explore ourselves. Or whether we should hire a 4WD and self drive.

Where Cn you hire a 4WD near the bungle bungles? HALLS CREEK? Kununurra? Does anyone have advice on which to do?

Thanks in advance.

You can hire a 4WD in Kununurra. However, are you experienced with four wheel off road driving? The track into Purululu from the highway is not for beginners. There are five or six water crossings for a start, plus lots of steep grades, sharp bends, loose sharp rocks and potholes. It's only 53 kilometres, but the advisory time to do the trip is three hours. That should give you some idea of the degree of difficulty.

For tours- contact the Kunurrura tourist centre or google them. I cant recommend a tour as we have our own vehicle.

There used to be a daybtrip from the Bungle Bungle caravan park at the head of the road into Purnululu.

Kun is the closest to depart from if you are hiring or tour. Halls creek should be avoided.

If you do hire you need to ensure that you have specific permission to take the vehicle there. If you sont and need recovery it will be eye wateringly expensive.

I would say though that you would be ok by September as the water will recede. None of the crossings at that point will be troublesome. Sensible speed and drive to conditions and its a good drive in.

There is only camping and an APT camp. Its pretty nice but expensive.

You would have to get a 4wd camper high clearance is a must.

Why do you say to avoid Halls Creek? Rip off?

Why do you say to avoid Halls creek?

Halls Creek has had a less than salubrious reputation. Pricing in the Outback is always going to be high.

Halls Creek has , like Fitzroy Crossing, some social order issues. Its not an interesting quaint place at all. None of these towns are. There used to be a fair amount of mining stayers and motel prices were astronomical. Now camp grounds have compounds.

However the drive from Kun to Darwin is quite scenic, with some great walking in Keep River NP and around Katherine.

The one way hire would be very expensive as you are going over a state/ territory border.

What is the rest of your itin for perspective?

Our itinerary which is just roughly drawn out at this point so if we are missing anything or you feel like something doesn’t make sense or isn’t worth it please let me know as I’m really struggling to plan this trip.

We are doing a road trip Perth to Esperance over 16 days. Spending time in Perth , Margaret River , Walpole, Denmark, Albany , Esperance.

We’ve decided to add on two extra weeks to see some of the north and to get a bit of heat in our bones.

If possible we would love to find a resort somewhere in the north that we can chill on the beach and pool (sun loungers/resort type thing welcome) for a few days as part of our north trip.

We want to take in Bungles Bungles for sure, unsure if Broome is worth it but we don’t want to miss the red beaches if they’re spectacular as advertised. Possibly Emma gorge, or if horizontal falls or a mini tour of gibs river road were worth it we would consider that too. Finally we want to see Ningaloo reef. Unsure if it makes sense after Kimberly to get all the way over to Exmouth . After this portion of the trip we will visit the south west.

Perth - Kununurra. Trek out to bungle bungles and spend two nights.

Bungles - Emma gorge (? 1 night)

Back to kununurra - fly to Broome.

Broome ? 2/3 nights.

Broome - exmouth spend ?3/4 nights.

Get to Perth.

We’re happy to fly Kun - Broome, Broome - exmouth, exmouth - Perth.

Can anyone suggest a better schedule?

You would need to fly back to Perth then on to Exmouth.

Maybe check flight prices to see if they fit in your budget then work an itinerary.

For your extra 2 weeks you could go Perth to Exmouth for beach time and hire a car for a few days at Karijini. That makes for a great trip as well.

As an aside for the south loop lots of great hiking. And add Fitzgerald River NP ( Hopetoun end). Your 16 days should work for that loop.
