You can surf the web on a PS5, but it's limited

The PS5 is almost four years old but it still doesn't offer the ability to fully browse the internet. Of course, that's not totally unreasonable considering it's a gaming machine first and foremost, but if you want to surf the net on your Sony console, we've got all the details you need on how to access the PS5's secret web browser.

It's important to note that the PS5's web browser is not fully functional. It’s clearly not a feature that Sony intended users to have access to, so it does have pretty heavy restrictions and a number of quirks and limitations. The browser is fine at loading sites that are primarily text, but it does struggle with videos and audio.

On a more positive note, accessing the browser previously required you to have an X (formerly Twitter) account, but since the PS5 no longer allows users to link their console with the social platform, that is no longer necessary. You can now access the PS5's hidden web browser without needing to sign into any social platform.

So with that in mind, here's our guide on how to access PS5’s secret web browser.

From your PS5 home screen, select the Settings menu . Just look for the small cog icon in the top right corner.

3. Select YouTube from Linked Services tab

Scroll down to Linked Services , and select YouTube . If you have already linked a YouTube account you must unlink it to access the PS5’s web browser.

4. Click Link

On the next screen, click the Link button .

5. Click Use Browser

Ignore the QR code on the following page, and instead select Use Browser .

6. Click Terms

Use the on-screen cursor to select Terms on the Google sign-in page.

7. Scroll down and click Google

Scroll down to the very bottom of the page, and select Google in the footer.

8. Search via Google

You now have access to Google Search.

9. Browse the internet

The playstation 5 has a hidden web browser; here’s how to find it, twitter login backdoor lets you hop around to any site with a convenient link..

Clicking on the search box brings up the usual on-screen keyboard interface.

Officially, the PlayStation 5 doesn't include a Web browser, marking an apparent software downgrade from the PlayStation 4. But Ars has discovered the PS5 does actually include a limited, hidden Web browsing interface that you can use to load up generic websites on your TV in a pinch.

The easiest way to get into the PS5 Web browser is to go to the system settings and load up the User's Guide. Unlike most other informational menus on the system, this one loads up inside a Web browser that points to the live URL at manuals.playstation.net .

If you visit that address from a standard PC or mobile Web browser, the site gives an error message. But if you access it from the PS5 menu, you see a picture explaining "how to navigate this user's guide" with the DualSense controller, as seen above.

While this user's guide is fun (and informative) to play around in, it doesn't offer any external links that could provide a hook to the wider Web. And without any option to just type in a generalized URL via the PS5 interface, the User's Guide is of limited use for surfing the information superhighway (as all the hippest '90s kids would say).

If you click this link in the corner, though, you can log in to Twitter.com through the main Web interface.

Yet another way to get your daily Ars fix.

To get that kind of wider access, you have to scroll down to the Users and Accounts menu on the PS5 and head to the "Link with Other Services" option. There, you can choose to link to a Twitter account, which brings up a webpage with a Twitter login prompt.

As designed, this page is meant to log you in to Twitter, link your account to the PS5, and spit you back to the system menu. However, if you click on the small Twitter icon in the top corner, you go instead to Twitter's standard Web interface, just as it would look on any other browser. Log in from there and you get full access to Twitter through the PS5's Web browser.

Though you still can't type into the URL bar in this interface, Twitter.com offers (slightly cumbersome) access to the wider Web through clickable links in tweets and profile descriptions. If the site you're interested in has a Twitter account (or is simply discussed on social media at all), finding those links is usually as simple as typing your intended target into the Twitter search bar.

You can even plug in a USB keyboard to make the searching simpler and/or hop through links with the arrow and Enter keys. USB mice don't seem to work with the PS5 browser, though—you still need to use the DualSense joysticks to scroll or move the on-screen pointer.

Testing the Web waters

After a bit of spot testing, we found that the PS5 Web browser seems to work just fine for pages that are primarily text and images. Multimedia and/or interactive pages were a bit more hit or miss, though.

Though there isn't an official Vimeo app on the PS5, you can still load Vimeo videos through the Web browser (if you can find them).
Fully Javascript-based emulators can run games (like this bit of homebrew) in the PS5 browser.
Games that require libraries like WebGL aren't supported on the PS5.
Loading up a Spotify playlist via the PS5 browser brings up this error message.

Why is there a Web browser settings menu if they didn't want people to use the browser?

Video sites like YouTube, Vimeo, and Twitch worked without much issue on the PS5, complete with sound, though trying to go "full screen" with a video failed on each one. Music streaming sites like Spotify, Soundcloud, and Bandcamp, on the other hand, could generally load the interface but couldn't actually play any music through the PS5 in our tests.

Web-based games were also pretty spotty in our PS5 browser tests. Games and/or emulators that are coded in pure HTML and Javascript seem to load, though controls were an issue unless they're designed to work with just a keyboard. Games that require WebGL, Flash, or other fancier Web-based libraries seemed to fail, though. That includes the Internet Archive's massive library of emulated software ; the site's Web-based implementations of DOSBox and MESS/MAME seemed to freeze immediately after loading assets on the PS5.

Why is it hidden?

It might seem odd for Sony to build a decently functional Web browser into the PS5 and then hide it away where most users will never really use it. It might seem especially odd since the PS4 featured a fully supported Web browser complete with URL bar and quick access to "frequently used pages." It seems odder still when you notice the PS5 system menu actually includes a "Web Browser" settings section where you can disable JavaScript, delete cookies, and "prevent cross-site tracking."

That said, for Sony to upgrade the PS5 browser from its current "ramshackle interface for the User's Guide and Web service logins" to "fully featured browser that works reliably across the Web" would probably take a decent amount of effort (and customer support). And Sony has recently suggested that putting in that effort just isn't a priority at the moment.

"Currently, we don't intend to include a Web browser in PS5," Sony Senior Vice President Hideaki Nishino said in a recent interview with Japanese site AV Watch (as translated by Twitter user Nibel ). "We have doubts about whether a Web browser is necessary for a game console as an app, so we'll have to wait and see."

(On the Xbox One and Series S/X, third-party browsers like Monument can serve your browsing needs nicely).

For now, if you're desperate to load up a webpage through your PS5 for some reason, the workaround discussed above will let you do so. But don't be surprised if that's the closest we get to official support for PS5 Web browsing in the near future.

If you're looking for the PS5 web browser but can’t seem to find it, that’s because Sony doesn't want you to. There's a way to access it, but whether it’s worth using is a different story. Here's what I found out after trying it.

If you want to access the PS5 web browser, you're going to need a workaround. This is possible by using the Google sign-in page that pops up when linking a YouTube account to your console. From there, you can maneuver your way to the Google Search page and visit some websites.

Before proceeding, make sure you've updated your PS5 . Then, head to Settings > Users and Accounts > Linked Services and select “YouTube” from the list of services. If you've already linked your YouTube account, unlink it before proceeding.

On the next screen, select “Link Account” at the bottom. Then, select “Use Browser” in the bottom right corner.

The Google sign-in page will appear, but the address bar at the top will be locked. So, using the left analog stick to move the cursor, select “Terms” in the bottom right of the sign-in form. Then, push the right analog stick down to scroll to the bottom of the page and select “Google” in the footer.

This will open a basic version of the Google Search page. Select the search bar, enter your query using the virtual keyboard, and then hit “Done” to close it. Then, click the “Search” button to start the search.

You will see some results appear in the browser. You can then click on the links to visit the respective pages. Congratulations, you're now surfing the web on a PS5.

Considering the browser is very basic, you won’t be able to do anything fancy with it. I could visit websites to read articles or visit streaming sites like YouTube and Twitch to watch videos.

I even managed to log into Facebook, but it looked so downgraded from the experience I am used to.

The takeaway is that you can use the browser to visit websites that contain text, images, and videos. It seems to have the core technologies it needs to load them, such as HTML5 and JavaScript. However, don’t expect everything to look and work like it would in a fully functional browser.

With that said, I encountered problems when running browser games. I sometimes like to unwind by playing browser games on itch.io. The PS5 web browser doesn't seem to support core technologies, like WebGL or input APIs, required to play many of these games. I suspect you'll run into similar problems when trying to run other multimedia applications and web apps.

The user experience isn’t great, considering the address bar is locked. For instance, if I want to visit another website, I have to press the circle button a few times to return to the Google Search page and search for it. This can get pretty tedious.

Not to mention, accessing the feature in the first place is not that straightforward. Using the DualSense controller and onscreen keyboard to navigate is clunky and unintuitive for web browsing.

For these reasons, I wouldn't recommend using the hidden browser on the PS5, especially if you have a computer or smartphone close by. I prefer the built-in browser on my smart TV over this one. It's also ideal since it prevents you from linking your YouTube account to the console in the future.

You might be wondering why the PS4 has a browser right in the open, but the one on the PS5 is hidden. One theory is that web browsers are often used to discover exploits that lead to custom firmware being installed on consoles. Another is that Sony saw that no one was using it and figured it didn't add anything significant to the user experience.

But Sony had to include a browser for linking services that require access to a sign-in page. Hence, the hidden one.

There are some great features you should be using on the PS5 , but the hidden browser isn't one of them. While I didn't find it useful, it doesn't mean you won't either. It's there for you to try, but keep the limitations in mind.

If you've ever lamented the lack of a dedicated browser on PS5, fear not. Sony 's flagship console does actually have an in-built browser that can be used to surf the web, albeit one that's fairly limited and can only be accessed in a certain way.

While there's some minor hoops to jump through to make use of the PS5 web browser, we'll show you how to access this 'hidden' browser, and the roundabout way in which you can browse the internet while using it.

Navigate to the PS5 settings menu, accessed via the cog wheel icon at the top right of the PS5 dashboard.

Select Users and Accounts, followed by the 'Link with other services' option within the Users and Accounts submenu. You'll then be greeted by a selection of social media apps that the PS5 supports linking to. Select Twitter to continue.

The PS5 browser window will pop up, but we don't actually want to link our Twitter account here, as doing so will close the PS5 web browser upon successfully linking, taking us straight back to the Settings menu. Instead, we want to click the option to 'Sign up for Twitter' found at the top right of the window, followed by 'Log in' on the following page. Next, enter your sign-in credentials, and instead of being booted back to the PS5 settings menu, you'll have access to your Twitter feed.

Finally, click any external site link embedded in tweets on your feed to be taken to that website.

Final thoughts

Admittedly, accessing sites via the PS5 web browser is unavoidably unconventional, and most likely wasn't intended as a fully supported feature. That said, the nature of Twitter's account linking system makes it very easy to simply bypass that linking process and access your feed instead.

If you've missed the availability of a web browser on the PS4, then, you can still access it on PS5, albeit in a more obtuse fashion. The search bar in which to enter URLs is also locked and can't be interacted with directly, which is why surfing via your Twitter feed is the best option here.

It's worth mentioning that the PS5 web browser is fairly limited in what it can do. While it can display images just fine, it will sometimes return a broken image instead. On top of that, while you can watch YouTube videos in the PS5 web browser, you're not able to view them in full screen. The dedicated PS5 YouTube app is a better option for that.

Overall, though, this is an interesting curio brought about as a result of the nature of the Twitter account link screen. And it's a decent – if limited – fallback in case other web browsing sources like your PC or phone become otherwise inaccessible for a time.

Star Wars Outlaws PS5 players asked to start all new save to avoid progression blocking bugs

A number of Star Wars Outlaws players have been advised to restart their game with a new save file to avoid problems with progression.

Ubisoft last night emailed some PlayStation 5 players asking them to update their copy of Outlaws to the latest version, following a chunky bug-busting patch.

"To best experience the Outer Rim, we rolled out a maintenance to make sure everyone is playing the latest version of the game," Ubisoft's email reads. "As one of the players affected who had access to an older version of the game, we are aware you might be encountering some issues after this recent patch. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused."

Ubisoft asked those affected players to "start a new save to fully enjoy Star Wars Outlaws as our team intended". It noted that if players continue to play on an earlier save file, they will "unfortunately face issues and progression blockers".

Our friends over at Digital Foundry received the above email. Tom Morgan informed me when he captured footage for Star Wars Outlaws a few days ago, his PS5 was on version 1.000.002. On Xbox Series X/S, meanwhile, he was on version 1.0.0.3 (see below).

Please note, this email has not been sent out to all Star Wars Outlaws players - our Guides team and Eurogamer's deputy editor Chris did not recieve it.

This news from Ubisoft has caused some discontent among Star Wars Outlaws players who had paid more to gain early access via the Gold and Ultimate editions of the game.

"I just got this email this morning, wish I knew that [before] I played 5 hours last night. Honestly this game is testing my patience," complained one such player over on Reddit. "I'm disgusted. Paid $110 and played all night, 12 hour stretch," added another. "This is how Ubi thanks us??"

Eurogamer has asked Ubisoft for further comment.

After exploring your PS5, you might be surprised to find that the console doesn't have a web browser built-in. This seems like a downgrade, as the PlayStation 4 included a web browser from the start.

As it turns out, there's a hidden web browser in the PS5 you can access through a convoluted method. We'll show you how to browse the web on your PS5 if you really need to.

How to Access the PS5 Web Browser

To use the web browser on the PS5, first head to the Settings page from the main menu. Here, select the Users and Accounts section, followed by Linked Services .

At the time of writing, though the app formerly known as Twitter is now called X, the PS5 still uses the Twitter name and logo. Thus, choose Twitter > Link Account to open a login page for the service.

If you've connected your Twitter/X account to your PS5 in the past, you'll need to unlink it first to use this method.

Don't actually log in here. Instead, use the left stick to hover the cursor over the Twitter bird logo at the top of the page, then click it with the X button.

When you do this, you'll be faced with a login page like you would in any desktop browser. Since you can't search X without an account anymore, we'll need an alternative method to access the web at large. The trick lies in selecting Sign in with Google . Click this to open Google's login page.

Here, select Terms at the bottom of the login page. This will lead to a long page with all of Google's terms and conditions.

Use the right stick to scroll down to the very bottom (it will take a moment) and you'll see a link to Google at the bottom-left. Click this.

Selecting this link will bring you to a stripped-down version of the familiar Google homepage. From here, you have free reign to search for whatever you like and browse the web using your PS5.

Because there's no browser address bar, you'll need to search Google and click links to go anywhere. It's clunky, but functional.

Is the PS5 Web Browser Worth Using?

As you might expect given how Sony hid the browser away, the PS5 web browser isn't anything fantastic. Basic sites that only have text and images load fine, but anything that requires multimedia isn't reliable.

You can probably pull up a video site that doesn't have a dedicated PS5 app to enjoy watching its content, but don't expect to use complicated web apps or play games. Using the software keyboard is a pain (unless you connect a physical keyboard to your PS5 ). Plus, using the Google login workaround every time is inefficient and prevents you from linking your X account with your PSN account.

For most people, there are few reasons you'd actually want to use the browser on your PS5. Chances are that you have a smartphone nearby that's much easier to use and will work with almost all websites, unlike the clunky PS5 browser experience. The only scenario we can think of where this browser would come in handy is if you want to look something up while using PlayStation VR and don't want to take the headset off.

This is probably why Hideaki Nishino from Sony said that the company "ha[s] doubts about whether a web browser is necessary." There's a chance that the PS5 could get a better browser in the future, but it's likely not a priority when everyone has better ways to access the web.

Oddly, the PS5 does have an options page under Settings > System titled Web Browser that has settings for deleting cookies and similar. It's not clear why this exists when the browser isn't meant for general use.

Meanwhile, if the lackluster web browser left you wanting more, you should check out other hidden features of your PS5 .

Now you know how to reach the PS5's limited web browser. Hopefully you'll never need it, but it could be a fun trick for showing off to friends. Otherwise, it's not much more than a PS5 Easter egg.

Method 1. Send PS Messages so You Can Use the PS5 Web Browser

Here’s a neat trick: if you want to access a webpage, just send the URL to a friend through PS messages in the Game Base. Then, hop into the chat and click the link they sent. This clever method, discovered by a Reddit user , lets you visit any website, not just the ones shared on Twitter.

You can even “pin” it to the side, making the browser easily accessible from the quick menu, similar to a favorite page. This opens up a world of possibilities, like accessing Discord on PS5 .

Method 2. Use Twitter to Access the PS5 Web Browser

If you don’t find it easy to send and receive PS messages, you still can access the PS5 web browser by using Twitter.

The process is a bit more complex though. Here are the steps to follow:

Step 1. Create a Twitter account.

Skip the modal window asking for your Twitter login. Here’s the trick: have you heard of The Permatab web browser ? Check it out—you’ll be surprised!

Instead of logging in directly from the modal, click on the Twitter icon at the top left corner. This takes you to the regular Twitter website’s login page. Enter your username and password here to access your Twitter homepage, which will serve as your main source for websites.

Step 3. Look for the page to visit.

With Twitter access on PS5, you can reach any website linked there. Say you want to visit Coca-Cola’s site. Just head to their Twitter profile and click the website link. It’s not ideal—it’s slow and clunky—but hey, you wanted to explore web navigation on PS5, right?

No, you can’t install or download a browser for the PS5. The PS5 has no third-party app that will allow you to browse the Internet, therefore you can not install or download any app. If you want to use the PS5 to browse the Internet, you can follow any of the two ways detailed above.

And although you can basically access a web browser on your PS5 with the above hacks, take note that it doesn’t mean it’s a smooth ride. Since web browsers aren’t really a fit for your PS5, it can be laggy so don’t expect too much.

It’s also worth noting that the PS5 web browser trick doesn’t work on all websites. Sony has no plans of adding a browser functionality to the PS5 until they see the need to do so. Until then, we’ll have to stick with the PS5 browser hack.

Sony recently said the PS5 doesn't have a web browser . That's not entirely true. There is a web browser...but you can't access it whenever you want.

Unlike the PS4, the PS5 doesn't have a web browser app built into the system's UI. Gamers can't start up a web app and surf the internet like they can on the PS4. The reasons for this are two-fold: Sony doesn't really think people need a web browser, but more importantly, it reduces the opportunities for hacks and exploits. The PS4's web browser led to a kernel access exploit on v1.76. Sony doesn't want to repeat the same mistake.

On the other hand, the PS5 does technically have a web browser, but it's only available when you first set up the console. The browser is restricted though and you can't actually change the URL. The browser comes up when you click on the ratings and health and safety sections on console setup.

When setting up my PS5, I clicked on all the options and was met with various web pop-ups that directly connected to Sony's and the ESRB's websites. The console didn't let me take screenshots so I had to take a snap with my phone. After startup, I wasn't able to access the web pop-up portions again.

Also, when I linked my Twitter account to the PS5, I got an email from Twitter saying I just signed in on a new Safari browser. So the PS5 runs on a webkit version of Safari just like the PS4.

Oddly enough the PS5's UI does have a section for the web browser. There's settings to tweak and adjust, like clearing cookies and website data.

Sony exec Hideaki Nishino recently said the PS5 could get a public and accessible web browser at some point:

"Currently, we do not intend to install a web browser on PS5," Sony VP Hideaki Nishino said in a recent interview with AV Watch .

"Of course, I use it as a component to use various network functions, but I have doubts about whether a web browser is required for game consoles as an application, so please let me know."

Granted, the game is a little rough around the edges and nowhere near as well-polished as its more established rival , but, when combined with the game's over-the-top action, the arcade-style experience that's on offer here makes it a more than worthy competitor. Asterix & Obelix XXXL: The Ram From Hibernia

Released in late 2022, Asterix & Obelix XXXL: The Ram From Hibernia is an action-adventure game that supports up to four-player local co-op. It's far from the best-looking game on the PS5 and the pulled-back camera angles can at times make it a little difficult to keep track of what's going on, but that doesn't stop the game from being a lot of fun most of the time; particularly when played with friends.

Younger players probably won't be all that familiar with the titular characters, with the comedy satire comic book series having first debuted all the way back in 1959. That shouldn't stand in their way of enjoying what's on offer though, as a lot of the game's charm is derived from the way that the characters behave on-screen rather than the events that led them to their latest adventure.

When Sonic the Hedgehog creator Yuji Naka announced that he was working on a new 3D platformer, a lot of people were excited. That Square Enix would be publishing and presumably helping out with the development of Balan Wonderworld only amplified this initial excitement. Naturally, the final game failed to live up to the hype, though that's not at all to say that it's not worth playing.

If nothing else, Balan Wonderworld is an incredibly weird video game with plenty of baffling design choices and a lot of confusing themes. Despite this, though, like an overturned car on the side of the freeway, it can be difficult to look away, with players constantly left guessing what kind of craziness will be coming their way next. As is often the case with games like this, this randomness is best shared with a friend.

Baldur's Gate 3

The Baldur's Gate series has always been popular, but the franchise's third mainline installment helped to bring it to a whole other level. Baldur's Gate 3 is one of the best role-playing games of all time and is made all the better by the inclusion of a split-screen local co-op mode.

Players can also experience the title via online multiplayer, though this is arguably not as fun as doing so with a friend or loved one by one's side. The game is full to the brim with content , so those looking for something to while away the days with should definitely consider checking it out.

Gearbox Software's Borderlands series hasn't changed all that much since making its debut back in late 2009. It looks great too, and while some may bemoan the lack of innovation, they can at least be thankful that loot drops remain free rather than being locked behind aggressive and predatory microtransactions.

The Borderlands games have always done an excellent job of incorporating split-screen and this is once again the case in Borderlands 3 . The game features both horizontal and vertical options and, exclusively on next-gen consoles, as many as four players can get involved at once. While playing online, it's also possible for additional players to drop into the session, although the maximum number of players at any given time is four.

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake

Strictly speaking, the original release of Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons can be played like a traditional co-op game if players choose to do so. However, the 2024 remake includes a dedicated local co-op mode, allowing two players to share the experience without having to cozy up and share a single controller.

There's perhaps an argument to be made that the story is more impactful when experienced solo, though there's still plenty of fun to be had by sharing it with a friend or loved one. Unfortunately, split-screen support in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is a little lackluster at launch , with players only able to play in certain game modes while utilizing the feature. Whether or not the developers will allow split-screeners to play in more game modes in the future remains to be seen, though what's on offer at present can still be enjoyable when approached with the right attitude.

In some ways, Pixel Maniacs' Can't Drive This is actually an anti-co-op game, despite players sharing a single split-screen. The way that it achieves this is incredibly innovative, with one player creating tracks and puzzles for the other using a series of modular components akin to those found in one of those old connect-the-pipes-style games.

The developer describes the game as a competitive co-op title, which seems somewhat fair given its core mechanics. Ultimately, however, the game is a lot of fun whatever one wishes to call it, and is well worth checking out. Granted, with four players involved things can quickly get a little hectic, but that's arguably a big part of what makes it so appealing to so many players.

Chicory: A Colorful Tale is one of the best indie games since Undertale and boasts a simple yet enjoyable gameplay loop that makes it perfect for multiplayer. Unlike many of the other great co-op multiplayer games on the PS5, in which a momentary lapse in focus can potentially have major and irreparable consequences, Chicory is refreshingly forgiving, with players easily able to make amends for their mistakes.

Together with its vibrant and charming visuals, the low-stakes nature of Chicory makes it a great game to play with young children who perhaps lack the dexterity for more complex games. Conversely, the ease with which it can be picked up makes it a great jumping-off point for those who are unfamiliar with video games. This unmatchable accessibility allows players to relax and focus on sharing this charming experience with the friend or loved one with whom they are playing.

Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time

Would the multiplayer experience on offer in Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time have been better if the developers had allowed players to play together simultaneously? Absolutely. Even so, the fact that a co-op multiplayer mode was implemented at all is still a nice bonus, particularly for a platformer of this quality.

The game implements a controller-swapping system, with players handing over the pad after reaching a checkpoint or dying. There's also a more head-to-head oriented mode that sees players racing to reach checkpoints or break as many boxes as possible, though this is again all handled with a single controller, meaning that players will have to sit and wait their turn.

Crash Bandicoot 4

The dark pictures anthology: the devil in me, opencritic rating: 72.

Much like Supermassive Games' other narrative-driven survival horror games, The Dark Pictures Anthology: The Devil In Me supports both local and co-op multiplayer. In a welcome change though, the experience ends up being a lot better for those playing locally, with support for up to five players as opposed to just two. Granted, four of those players will be sat doing nothing for most of the time, but it's nice to have the option of playing together nonetheless.

Each player can be assigned to a different character (or multiple characters if there aren't enough players) and will be handed the controller whenever the time comes to make a decision or act. One wrong move can lead to their own character's death, or, in some cases, the death of one of the other players' characters instead. It's this near-constant sense of jeopardy that makes the game so enjoyable and a must-play for any horror fan.

The Dark Pictures: The Devil in Me

Dc's justice league: cosmic chaos, opencritic rating: 76.

A lot of modern superhero games are geared more toward teenagers and young adults than they are young children, not just in terms of the way that they control, but also some of the themes that their narratives tackle. DC's Justice League: Cosmic Chaos bucks the trend in this regard, providing players with a family-friendly open-world adventure that can be enjoyed by people of all ages.

Better still, DC's Justice League: Cosmic Chaos offers up a local co-op experience, allowing two PS5 players to share the screen as they explore Happy Harbor together. It's not the longest game in the world, with the main story lasting just ten hours or so, but for those playing the game with younger children , this may actually be ideal, particularly if they happen to have a short attention span.

Demon slayer -kimetsu no yaiba- the hinokami chronicles, opencritic rating: 70.

Given the massive popularity of the Demon Slayer anime, a video game adaptation always seemed like something of a certainty. Likewise, that it ended up taking the form of an arena fighter probably didn't surprise too many people, given that the fighting game sub-genre so often goes hand in hand with anime adaptations.

Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles isn't the best fighting game to come out of 2021, but it's still a decent enough game. Fans of the anime should really enjoy what the game has to offer, more so if they experience it with a like-minded friend or family member as opposed to on their own.

Destroy All Humans! 2 - Reprobed

Opencritic rating: 68.

Though its single-player experience ultimately failed to live up to the high standards set by some of its predecessors, Destroy All Humans! 2 - Reprobed is far from a bad game. In fact, for better or worse, it's an incredibly faithful recreation of the 2006 original, bringing Crypto kicking and screaming into the modern era of gaming.

The game supports two-player local co-op with each player given their own part of the screen as well as a shared mini-map and objectives list. Though it's pretty normal for a game to be better when played with a friend, few benefit quite as much as Destroy All Humans! 2 - Reprobed , with its split-screen co-op mode helping to turn what would otherwise be a bang-average experience into a truly great one.

The game features many different screen options and, unlike many other split-screen titles, adjusts the field of view accordingly rather than simply maintaining the original aspect ratio and filling the excess space with black bars.

Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons

Few franchises did more for the beat 'em up genre than Double Dragon , with Billy and Jimmy kicking countless asses throughout the late eighties and early nineties. In the years that followed, however, the series followed the genre into a deep slumber, which, despite numerous attempts to revive it, would end up lasting several decades.

Fast forward to the year 2023 and the franchise returned with Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons ; a roguelite spin-off from developer Secret Base . Released across multiple platforms, the game proved to be a hit with both players and critics alike. Like so many of the games that came before it, it supports couch co-op and is a must-play title for fans of the long-forgotten genre.

EA Sports FC 24

Like many other long-running sports sims, EA's FIFA franchise is often criticized for its lack of innovation, and for good reason. For years it has felt like the franchise has been treading water, though that's not really the case with the series' last few entries. The HyperMotion technology used in FIFA 22 and FIFA 23 helped the games feel like true next-gen titles and made them some of the most realistic football games ever made, both in terms of their mechanics and their visuals. EA Sports FC 24 takes this one step further with HyperMotion V and offers great local multiplayer support to boot.

Released in July of 2022, Escape Academy is a puzzle game in which players are placed into the shoes of students who are training to become escape room masters. The game can be played by a single person, but becomes infinitely more enjoyable when tackled with a friend. Players can either do this over the internet or while sitting together on the couch, as this is one of the many split-screen games on the PS5.

There are numerous escape rooms found throughout the game, each of which is based on a different academic subject. This makes it great for local co-op encounters, as the strengths of one player can make up for the weaknesses of the other. Granted, some of the puzzles are a little too easy, while others are perhaps just a tiny bit too hard, but the complete package remains a fun one when all's said and done.

That said, it's arguably a far better solution than simply having black or empty space on the screen as many other developers opt for. While there can be no excusing the aggressive monetization found throughout Gran Turismo 7 , it's hard to argue that the gameplay itself isn't top-notch. Those looking for a realistic driving simulator really aren't likely to be disappointed, with all of the cars measuring up almost perfectly to their real-world counterparts.

It is worth noting, however, that for some strange reason, the team over at Polyphony Digital thought that it would be a good idea to lock the game's multiplayer mode behind single-player progress . As such, those looking for a multiplayer racing game that they can dive right into may be better served with WRC 9 or the excellent Dirt 5 .

Those who enjoy causing chaos will likely adore Goat Simulator 3 . It offers all of the same wacky antics as its predecessor does while also opening up the door to local co-op multiplayer, with support for up to four players and the ability to play with either horizontal or vertical split-screen depending on the number of players.

Playing with friends makes the classic Goat Simulator madness all the more enjoyable, particularly when there are four players involved. Though it might not be the best split-screen multiplayer game on the PlayStation 5, there is a strong argument to be made for it being one of the most enjoyable, albeit in short bursts .

There are a lot of great cooperative games out there that may appeal to couples. Playing a game together can be a fun, easy, and entertaining way to strengthen a relationship. Although most cooperative games feel great with friends, titles like Haven make the experience feel even more fulfilling for couples.

The story follows a pair of lovers who have ended up on a mysterious planet and must co-exist with the alien life found there. It's relaxing, engaging, and has moments of excitement sprinkled in via exploration and battles. The storyline is engaging and feels realistic. There's a lot to enjoy with Haven and it looks beautiful on the PS5.

Heavenly Bodies

Developed and published by Australian Studio 2pt Interactive, Heavenly Bodies is one of the more unique couch co-op multiplayer games on the PS5. It takes place out in the vast nothingness of outer space, wherein players must work together to perform various duties aboard a futuristic space station.

The game plays like a combination of Getting Over It and QWOP , with each of the analog sticks on the controller tied to one of the playable character's arms. The lack of gravity allows for some excellent physics-based puzzles, while the simple yet difficult-to-master control scheme provides plenty of challenge.

Hot Wheels Unleashed 2: Turbocharged

There were countless video games based on Mattel's popular Hot Wheels franchise around the turn of the century, but things eventually dried up after a decade or so. Since then, Hot Wheels games have come around every four or five years or so, which has helped to restore some of the sense of wonder that was lost as a result of the earlier over-saturation.

Much like its predecessor, Hot Wheels Unleashed 2 does a brilliant job of capturing the essence of the toys and is a little reminiscent of some of the fantastic Micro Machines games from back in the nineties as a result. Those looking for something a little less realistic than Gran Turismo yet not quite as wacky as a kart racer would therefore do well to check it out.

There were plenty of great lightgun games back in the nineties and early two-thousands, but few were quite as memorable as The House of the Dead . Despite its corny writing and voice acting (or perhaps because of it), the series went on to garner something of a cult following, leading to a remake being released across multiple platforms in early 2022 and a PS5 update arriving the following year.

Sadly, The House of the Dead: Remake is nowhere near as good as its predecessors, though that's not to say that it's a bad game. In fact, when played with a friend it can actually be a lot of fun even with the game's many shortcomings. The lack of a light gun definitely holds it back, but the ability to use PS Move controllers makes up for somewhat, as too does the game's use of the DualSense's touchpad.

Human: Fall Flat

Those looking for something a little more relaxing and a lot more comedic will definitely want to check out Human: Fall Flat . This hilarious ragdoll-physics-based game is pure fun, featuring a wide array of levels, outfits, and more.

The basic premise sees players trying to make it through hazard-filled levels, or simply trying to get from point A to point B using their less-than-reliable characters. With physics similar to titles like Gang Beasts and Party Animals , Human: Fall Flat is a great game for families. It never takes itself too seriously and can actually be quite challenging in later levels, requiring players to work together to make it to the goal.

Games designed specifically with co-op gameplay in mind can often be something of a mixed bag, but, for the most part, at least, It Takes Two manages to hit all the right notes. It looks great, requires a fair amount of critical thinking, and promotes teamwork and cooperation among its players. Perhaps most importantly though, it's a lot of fun.

Co-Op mechanics aren't very common in most RPGs. These titles incorporate them in interesting and unique ways.

Given that It Takes Two requires two players to complete, it should come as no surprise that it features a local split-screen mode, although, for a game centered around co-op gameplay, the lack of a horizontal option is perhaps a little disappointing. Thankfully, that's just about the only thing about the game that could be described as such. Just about everything seems to have been designed with a two-player experience in mind and the subsequent results really do speak for themselves .

Just Dance 2024 Edition

When it comes to dance and rhythm games , they really don't come much better than Ubisoft's Just Dance series. Granted, the formula may be fairly repetitive, but for those who enjoy bumping and grinding, that likely won't be too much of an issue. In fact, repetition probably won't matter at all for anyone who likes doing such things with their friends or family.

As one might expect from a series' most recent installment, Just Dance 2024 is the most action-packed Just Dance game yet. It features some of the most popular songs from recent years, with Just Dance Unlimited providing access to hundreds more . Players can enjoy these tracks alone or together locally with up to five other people, much like most of the franchise's other installments.

KeyWe flew under a lot of people's radars when it was first released back in the summer of 2021. However, this charming puzzle platformer has gone on to become a cult classic of sorts, with thousands of people checking it out in the years since its initial release.

The game has players controlling Jeff and Debra: two adorable kiwi birds who work in a whimsical post office. Together with a friend sitting next to them or an online stranger, they'll need to help the two little birdies to solve puzzles and get all of the messages delivered on time.

Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

For those who enjoy LEGO games, they really don't get much better than Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga . Brick for brick, it's one of the largest LEGO games ever made, and the skill and accuracy with which Traveller's Tales has arranged them all is just as impressive as the game's ambitious scope. It covers the stories of all nine mainline Star Wars movies and boasts a somewhat ridiculous 380 playable characters for players to choose from.

Granted, LEGO games can be something of an acquired taste, but there really is a lot to love here. Those put off by the art style would do well to watch a trailer or two before writing off the game entirely, as some of the visuals and environments that the developer has been able to create can actually be quite stunning in their own special way. Playing through the game solo can be a lot of fun, but doing so with a friend promises to be an absolute blast and is a must for Star Wars fans .

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

For pretty much everybody outside of the United States, FIFA is the ultimate football game. When it comes to American football, however, no franchise can compete with Madden , with more than 40 different editions being released in the three and a half decades or so since the series first made its debut back in 1988. Thanks to the power of the PlayStation 5 and its peers, this year's edition is one of the most visually impressive yet and features an improved co-op franchise mode.

Sadly, like all annual sports sim titles and an increasing amount of modern video games in general, the microtransactions in Madden NFL 24 are both excessive and intrusive. Granted, the game can still be enjoyed without spending any additional money and is a must-play for those who love American football, but the aggressive nature of its monetization does tarnish the overall experience quite a bit.

MLB The Show 24

Though most games tend to lean more toward online multiplayer these days, players can always rely on sports sims to keep things on the couch. To be clear, MLB The Show 24 does feature online co-op, but it also allows for up to four players to team up locally without the need for an internet connection, making this a must-play game for local multiplayer-loving baseball fans.

Thanks to the power of the console and the skill of the development team, couch co-op fans can enjoy one of the best local multiplayer experiences around right here with this game. It features a variety of different game modes too , though it's important to note that not all of these support local multiplayer.

Moving Out 2

Released in mid-2023, Moving Out 2 does everything that a good sequel should. It polishes and refines the things that made the original game so popular while also introducing new ideas and mechanics to help keep the experience feeling fresh. It succeeds in almost every area, offering players one of the best local co-op experiences that the PS5 has to offer; not to mention one of the most unique.

The premise of the game is quite simple: carry the objects across the level without hitting obstacles. Despite this simplicity, though, the game can actually be incredibly challenging if players are unable to coordinate their movements just right. The single-player experience can be a little frustrating for this reason, but when played with a few friends who are on the same wavelength, it can be an awful lot of fun.

For the most part, the first wave of annual sports games to hit the PS5 and Xbox Series consoles were a little underwhelming and struggled to justify their $70 price tags . Thankfully, however, the following years brought with them several great sports titles that gave players a much better idea of what exactly the next-gen consoles were truly capable of. One such title was NBA 2K24 .

To be clear, it's far from a reinvention of the wheel and the manipulative microtransactions are just as problematic as ever. However, the improved graphics and mechanics make this a must-play for any serious basketball fan. Even those with only a passing interest in the sport should be able to take enjoyment from the game's local multiplayer options, which allow for up to four players at any given time.

Nobody Saves the World

Nobody Saves the World borrows a lot of its ideas from other dungeon crawlers, but manages to put them all together in a way that feels both fresh and unique. The gameplay is challenging but fair and the way that players are forced to constantly switch up their loadout ensures that they are a lot less likely to become complacent or bored during a run.

Although the game didn't feature local co-op at launch , the feature was eventually patched in after a couple of months to coincide with the game's PlayStation and Switch releases, allowing two friends to play together on a single console. The experience is every bit as enjoyable as online co-op, if not more so, with players now able to vent their frustrations a lot easier due to their partner sitting right beside them on the couch.

Nobody Saves The World

Outward: definitive edition, opencritic rating: 64.

Released in mid-2022, the definitive edition of Outward brought with it a wide range of improvements, helping to turn what was already an enjoyable co-op RPG experience into an even better one. From combat to difficulty, everything is now much more well-balanced, with the visuals also being noticeably improved.

While there are certainly better co-op RPGs out there, those looking for a great two-player PS5 game to share with a friend could definitely do a lot worse. It's not a game to be played with young children on account of its violent combat, but older players may well prefer some of its darker and more mature themes.

Overcooked 2

While Overcooked 2 may not be a traditional split-screen game, it's still one of the best local co-op titles available on the PS5. This release is an absolute blast and an ideal family game thanks to its wholesome yet hectic theme. The action all takes place on one screen, but each player is free to control their own character.

To succeed in Overcooked 2 , players will need to work together to overcome a hazardous kitchen while simultaneously balancing a variety of foods and recipes to cook a spectacular dish. It's a ton of fun in a group and can be pretty challenging to boot, particularly if not everybody is on the same page.

Quake Remastered

The Quake series is one that should need no introduction, at least not for gamers of a certain age. Together with other popular FPS series like Doom , Wolfenstein , and Unreal , id Software's multiplayer first-person shooter helped to shape and define the genre. Much to the delight of fans, a remastered version of the franchise's debut installment was released for the PlayStation 5 in late 2021 and is every bit as enjoyable as the original.

While it's undeniable that the fps genre has come a long way in the two-and-a-half decades since the game's original release , the remastered version of Quake still oozes class and will evoke fond memories of classic nineties multiplayer shooters in those old enough to remember them. Better still, players will be able to play the game locally with up to three of their friends, either in co-op or deathmatch modes.

As is the case with some of the other great titles from Supermassive Games, The Quarry features a somewhat unique couch co-op mode. Rather than players each having their own controller, they'll instead be assigned a different role, with players having to pass the gamepad among one another depending on whose character is in the hot seat.

When it comes to gameplay, The Quarry is incredibly similar to the studio's other interactive games, though stands apart from its Dark Pictures Anthology series. This arguably makes it much more accessible and a lot more in keeping with the developer's breakthrough title Until Dawn . It's a solid enough game with more than 100 endings, so can be a great way to pass the time with friends.

River City Girls 2

Side-scrolling beat-em-ups have seen something of a resurgence in recent years, thanks in large to the success of titles like River City Girls . The game's sequel, River City Girls 2 , was released in late 2022 and built upon everything that made the original game so great; from its fantastic sense of humor to its wonderful local co-op mode.

River City Girls 2 has support for up to 4-players , either online or locally via couch co-op. As with most other modern beat-em-ups, everyone shares the same screen, which helps to evoke memories of classic arcade brawlers like Double Dragon and Streets of Rage . This game is every bit as enjoyable, particularly when played with a friend or three.

There are plenty of great online multiplayer games for the PSVR 2, but very few that are able to offer players an enjoyable couch co-op experience. Runner is one of those games, with the eighties-inspired title allowing a second player to handle the driving with a DuelSense controller while the person wearing the headset takes care of weaponry. Alternatively, players can just take a Sense controller each, allowing them to choose who does what.

Local co-op support is just one of many things that help Runner to stand out though, with its stylish visuals and vibrant colors chief among them. Despite being a little repetitive in places, the core gameplay loop is a lot of fun too, and is about as close to a VR Road Rash experience as one could ever hope to find. Developer Truant Pixel deserves a lot of credit here, not just for the quality of the game itself, but for finding such an innovative way of incorporating local co-op .

Sackboy: A Big Adventure

Sumo Digital is a developer that's renowned for its ability to churn out fun and engaging games , and this is once again the case with Sackboy: A Big Adventure . Granted, it perhaps doesn't look quite as impressive as one might expect from a PS5 launch title, but it's far from ugly and makes up for its lack of visual fidelity with tight platforming and an all-around charming adventure.

The game's co-op mode is a little reminiscent of the one found in Portal 2 , with players working together to solve puzzles and progress through stages. In fact, certain stages can only be tackled with multiple players , meaning that players will need to work together to fully complete the game. This is obviously more fun with friends or family, though the game does now feature online multiplayer for those who prefer it.

Sea of Stars

Opencritic rating: 89.

Most turn-based RPGs make use of a party system, with players typically taking control of three or more different characters during battle. With this in mind, it's a little surprising how few of them offer local co-op support. Thankfully, Sea of Stars is among the small number that do, allowing up to three players to take control of their own character both in and out of combat.

Released in August of 2023, this critically acclaimed indie game should appeal to fans of nineties RPGs, with its charming art style and well-written story reminiscent of SNES classics like Terranigma , Chrono Trigger , and Suikoden 2 . With an average completion time of around 27 hours, it's not quite as long as some of its peers, although there's more than enough side content for those hoping to squeeze a few extra drops of fun out of their playthrough.

Sonic Origins Plus

Many feel that couch co-op is going the way of the dodo, and there's plenty of evidence to support that point of view. The number of new local co-op games being released every year is shrinking rapidly, but there is a reprieve of sorts. Many classic games that supported two players are being remade or remastered, with their co-op modes thankfully remaining intact.

One such example of this is Sonic Origins Plu s , which bundles together 16 classic Sonic games into one single collection. Not all of these games support two players, but most of them do. As a result, it's the perfect purchase for those looking to relive their childhoods and perhaps share some of these treasured memories with their own kids or other loved ones.

Sonic Superstars

Those looking for a more modern 2D Sonic experience may prefer 2017's Sonic Mania or the 2023 title, Sonic Superstars . The former is arguably the better of the two games, but was never actually treated to a proper PS5 port and limits the local co-op action to just two players rather than four. In addition to accommodating more players locally, Superstars just feels a lot more like a game that was designed with multiplayer in mind.

The fact that Sonic Superstars appears to have come at the expense of a true Sonic Mania sequel is a little disappointing, as the single-player experience on offer here struggles to compare to the one in Sonic Mania . However, for those looking for the best local co-op games to play with their friends and family, Sonic Superstars is well worth a look.

Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection

Although it would have been nice if Aspyr had applied just a bit more polish here and there, Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection does just about enough to justify its claim of being a definitive collection. It not only provides excellent value for money, but also brings two of the best multiplayer Star Wars games of all time to modern consoles.

Like many of the best local multiplayer PS5 games, both Star Wars Battlefront and Star Wars Battlefront II provide local co-op support, allowing two players to tear it up in many of the franchise's most iconic locations. The visuals are no longer as impressive as they once were, but like Obi-Wan in A New Hope , the core gameplay has aged surprisingly gracefully given its age.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge

The TMNT franchise led the way when it came to sidescrolling brawlers back in the day, with many considering Turtles in Time to be one of the best arcade games ever made . It's for this reason that fans of the genre were so excited for the release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge , and boy did it live up to the hype.

Shredder's Revenge is an expertly crafted love letter to a bygone era of gaming and a must-play for any fan of the genre. Sadly, the PlayStation version is limited to four local players rather than the six that some of the other platforms are able to accommodate, but this should still be more than enough for all but the most popular of players.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge

Gearbox Software's Borderlands games have always had fantastic local co-op support, and Tiny Tina's Wonderlands , which serves as a spin-off, of sorts, continues this rich tradition. Like the most recent Borderlands game, it supports four-player split-screen on next-gen consoles, which can be an absolute blast on a large enough screen. It also works well for those looking to play locally with just a single friend rather than three, as they'll now have the choice between either a vertical or horizontal split.

Though it still suffers from a lot of the same flaws that besiege the main series, Tiny Tina's Wonderlands can still be a lot of fun and offers near-endless replayability thanks to the wide array of weapons on offer and its newly refined class system . The Coiled Captors DLC is a bit of a letdown, mind, so players may want to save themselves a few bucks and spring for the standard edition of the game rather than the Chaotic Great Edition.

The Tony Hawk's Pro Skater games were incredibly popular around the turn of the century, not to mention some of the best sports sim games ever made . With this in mind, the decision to remake the series' first two installments for the modern age seemed like something of a no-brainer, particularly with so many lesser titles being successfully remade or remastered.

Though not quite as impactful as the original titles, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 was still incredibly well received, with Activision later confirming the game was the fastest-selling entry in the franchise to date. A highly-rated next-gen release followed a few years later, with the game then given away to PS Plus subscribers in August of 2022.

Trine 5: a clockwork conspiracy.

Frozenbyte's Trine franchise has grown in popularity with each new installment. Released in August of 2023, Trine 5: A Clockwork Conspiracy is the series' latest offering and one of the very best to date. Like in its predecessors, co-op once again plays an important role, with players having to work together to solve the game's many puzzles.

As one might expect from a Trine game, the writing is strong and the puzzles are challenging; yet not to the extent that they take away from players' enjoyment. The art style may not be to everybody's taste and there are a few bugs here and there, but most players should be able to overlook these thanks to the strength of the game's core mechanics.

Warhammer 40,000: Shootas, Blood & Teef

Warhammer 40,000: Shootas, Blood & Teef is a 2D sidescroller that was released in October of 2022. Fans of classic run-and-gun games should find a lot to like here, even if they have little to no knowledge of the Warhammer 40,000 universe. It's one of the most underrated local multiplayer PS5 games of the past few years, offering a healthy spattering of fun and hand-drawn violence for a very reasonable price.

There are four different classes in Warhammer 40,000: Shootas, Blood & Teef , each of which has its own strengths and weaknesses. This bodes well, as the game supports up to four players either locally or online, providing them with an impressive arsenal of weapons with which to cause absolute chaos. It's a bit like Contra , only with orcs, and a lot more going on.

Warhammer: Chaosbane – Slayer Edition

Anyone who's already played Warhammer: Chaosbane will probably want to skip the Slayer Edition of the game . This is because it's effectively just an enhanced version of the original and not a particularly good one at that. To be clear, it does offer some subtle improvements here and there as well as a 4k facelift, but these extra bells and whistles don't really come close to justifying purchasing the game again.

However, those who enjoy Warhammer games and are yet to experience the base version of Chaosbane should give the Slayer Edition some serious thought, particularly if they're able to pick it up on the cheap. It boasts some excellent boss fights, an endless supply of loot, and a decent amount of customization through classes. There are one or two rough edges and the voice acting is laughable in places, but these minor niggles are very easy to overlook when playing the game with friends.

Warhammer: Chaosbane

We love katamari reroll + royal reverie, opencritic rating: 83.

Many of the best PS5 co-op games allow players to split up so that they can work through their objectives faster, but this isn't really the case when it comes to We Love Katamari REROLL + Royal Reverie . Well, technically, it is during the snowman level, but for every other stage, players will need to work together in perfect harmony, with both having control over a single Katamari.

With this in mind, We Love Katamari REROLL + Royal Reverie is a great game for fostering teamwork, as the only way to find success is by pulling in the same direction. Those who grew up playing Katamari games will find nostalgia at every twist and turn, but new players should enjoy it too thanks to its bright and cheery visuals and its simple yet highly addictive mechanics .

The World Rally Championship series has never quite reached the same heights as some of the more established racing game franchises, although WRC Generations arguably comes pretty close. The game looks great and, much like many of its predecessors, supports both online and local multiplayer.

Despite split-screen functionality being included, however, the inability to alter the orientation of the split in the screen may frustrate some players, as too might the two-player limit. Those only wishing to play with a single friend or family member should be fairly satisfied with the experience that's on offer though, particularly if they prefer a more rugged driving experience.

Following a one-year absence, the WWE 2K series made a triumphant return in early 2022. Granted, WWE 2K22 is far from the best wrestling game ever made , but it's considerably better than anything else that the WWE 2K series had been able to muster up in almost a full decade. The next few installments continued this upward trend, improving on their predecessor in just about every measurable way.

Though the majority of game modes are tailored towards the single-player experience, exhibition matches in WWE 2K24 allow for all manner of multiplayer mayhem. There are a ridiculous number of match types available, with players also able to tweak and change the rules and settings to their liking. For wrestling fans, this really is a must-play title.

Alan Wake 2

It’s a bold move, on the part of Remedy Entertainment , to actually make a decade-late sequel to a game that defined the studio, but whose ambitions it has arguably outgrown in the years since — particularly in its stunning, architectural action game Control . Might a trip back to Alan Wake ’s spooky woods, so obviously haunted by the ghosts of Stephen King and David Lynch, not feel like a step back?

Hardly. What Remedy created by bringing all its experience to bear on its most beloved creation is nothing short of a survival horror masterpiece , as well as a meta mystery about its own creation. Horror author Alan is joined by a co-protagonist, FBI agent Saga Anderson, who’s investigating a case linked to Alan’s disappearance over a decade earlier. Using this dual setup — impressively, you can fluidly switch between Alan’s and Saga’s stories essentially at your discretion — Remedy works outward from the original game’s premise, twisting it into a methodical detective thriller one moment and a reality-bending cosmic horror the next. Alan Wake 2 announces the start of a new generation of blockbuster horror gaming. —Oli Welsh

This strange, spooky puzzle adventure is being compared to the 2012 indie classic Fez — and honestly, there can be no higher praise than that. It’s tough to describe without spoiling it, for this is a game in which the mystery of discovery is paramount , and which disguises many important facets of its true nature until you’re deep into it. It’s one of those games that is best played with notebook to hand, and that could easily turn you into an obsessive conspiracy theorist if you get sucked in.

For now, it’s enough to know that you play as an egg-blob-thing living in a spectral forest inhabited by exquisitely animated, ghostly animals. The game unfolds like a Metroidvania, as you build out its 2D platforming map in non-linear fashion by collecting gear — but it’s even more inscrutable and mysterious than that might suggest , and really operates like a giant puzzle written in a language you have to learn as you go. It’s also gorgeous, drawn in translucent, glowing pixel art that’s at once ephemeral and materially tactile. A seven-year labor of love by developer Billy Basso, it was well worth the wait. —OW

Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon

If you’d asked us 10 years ago if a new Armored Core game would make our list of the best PlayStation 5 games, we’d have said we didn’t think a new Armored Core game would even exist by then. But happily, FromSoftware decided to cash in some of the huge cultural and financial status it earned from the phenomenal successes of Dark Souls, Bloodborne , and Elden Ring to revive its old-school mech combat franchise . It’s fitting that it pops up on this list, too, because Armored Core was historically a PlayStation series (the first game was even published by Sony).

What you get in Fires of Rubicon is a ferociously enjoyable, hugely customizable mission-based vehicular combat game with a surprisingly engaging storyline that creeps up on you. It doesn’t really have much in common with the Soulslikes that made FromSoftware’s name — unless you count the fantastically detailed art, finely crafted combat mechanics, and epic boss encounters that will test you to the limit. OK, maybe it does have a few things in common with them after all. —OW

Armored Core 6

Astro’s playroom.

Astro’s Playroom is themed around the idea that you’re running around inside your working PlayStation 5. The first area, Cooling Springs, is filled with waterslides and glaciers, implying that it’s keeping the heat down to a manageable level. This cute theming runs throughout the game, showing off different chunks of the hardware.

As in any great platformer, it’s a treat to just run around the environment in Astro’s Playroom . Astro doesn’t have as wide a range of talents as, say, Mario in Super Mario Odyssey , but he does have a handy jetpack, a fierce spin attack, and the ability to tug on ropes real hard. Each of these activates the new haptics in the DualSense controller, showing off the nuances of the enhanced vibration technology. As just a simple example, if you walk across a glass surface as Astro, you’ll feel the small tippy-taps of each step within the controller. Tugging on a rope to launch an underground enemy into the sky yields a far different experience, with a more intense vibration within the whole of the controller, followed by the ka-thunk of Astro falling back on his robutt.

Without playing it, it’s easy to write off Astro’s Playroom as a silly, ignorable pack-in game, something to fill up your system storage while you wait for the actual games to download. But it turns out that this is one of the best platformers Sony has ever made, matching the charm and fluidity of a Nintendo platformer while also demonstrating the power of this new console. —Russ Frushtick

Baldur’s Gate 3

Even after a very impressive three-year early-access period on PC, it’s still a shock how big a critical and commercial hit Larian Studios’ hardcore Dungeons & Dragons-based role-playing game turned out to be. It’s also surprising how well the Belgian studio has adapted this very computer-centric genre to console; Baldur’s Gate 3 feels perfectly at home on PS5.

Perhaps thanks to the popularization of D&D via actual-play series , the whole world seems primed and ready for a game like this — and Larian overdelivers in spectacular fashion. Baldur’s Gate 3 is as close to tabletop role-playing as you can get in video games, delivering strong storytelling, indelible characters , incredible flexibility and player agency , and the requisite side order of messiness , happy chaos , and barely disguised horniness . All this, and the PS5 version offers split-screen co-op, too. It’s simply one of the best role-playing games of all time. — OW

Cyberpunk 2077

Making this list is quite the turnaround for a game that started out with an ignominious delisting from the PlayStation Store due to the poor performance of the PS4 version. But a Herculean effort from developer CD Projekt Red turned Cyberpunk 2077 into a definitive modern first-person shooter-RPG. First, the native PS5 version radically improved with tech and visual upgrades; then, 2023’s Phantom Liberty expansion ushered in sweeping gameplay updates as well as a compelling new storyline.

All this sealed what should have been the cast-iron appeal of the original game: a 1980s-inflected cyberpunk fantasia that mixes the best of Deus Ex and Grand Theft Auto, Blade Runner and The Matrix . Cyberpunk 2077 is maybe not quite as cool as it thinks it is, but that can be part of its charm, and the makers of The Witcher games haven’t lost their talent for deft characterization, engrossing side-stories, and a kind of cynical romanticism. Plus, you get to be Keanu Reeves’ best friend — who could resist? —OW

By the time I went through my final run of Deathloop , I thought I would’ve walked away from the game feeling like a superpowered, time-bending assassin. Instead, the game made me feel like a masterful speedrunner.

That’s because there’s only one way to succeed in this time-looping game: To win, I must memorize the routines of all my assassination targets throughout four unique times of the day. Not only that, I have to set up specific scenarios so I can put them all at the right place at the right time to get eliminated. Mastering everything I needed to know took around 20 hours of living the same day over and over again. The payoff for all that hard work had me at the edge of my seat.

The endgame scenario for Deathloop requires me to take out each of my targets in a single run. It felt like setting up dominos that would then smoothly fall down in the most stylish way possible. The excitement of executing a well-made plan armed with knowledge — and a powerful arsenal of weapons and superpowers — made the hours of investigation and prep work feel worthwhile.

Deathloop still has a handful of mysteries left for me to unravel, and I can’t wait to uncover all of Blackreef’s secrets. — Jeff Ramos

Death Stranding: Director’s Cut is the definitive way to play one of the strangest games of the past few years. Where 2019’s Death Stranding welcomed a dedicated audience — and a good chunk of players that quickly bounced off — Director’s Cut makes Hideo Kojima’s independent debut more accessible without sacrificing its unique identity.

Death Stranding: Director’s Cut still asks Sam Porter Bridges to walk across a condensed version of the United States, precariously stacking packages on his back. But this time, Sam has more tools in the initial leg of his cross-country journey. Instead of spending the first 15 hours walking around with a rope as your only weapon, you can quickly get a gun that stuns enemies with lightning. And instead of winging it in your first combat scenario with a new piece of gear, the re-release of Death Stranding offers a substantial firing range for you to test your loadout.

But for all of its fancy new toys, Death Stranding is still a game about doing the grunt work necessary to connect with others. Its script can be metaphorically clumsy, but it never stumbles in expressing those metaphors through the gameplay itself.

Nobody has ever accused Hideo Kojima of subtlety, but it’s Death Stranding: Director’s Cut ’s smallest changes that make it so much easier to recommend. — Ryan Gilliam

Disco Elysium: The Final Cut

A grungy detective story about politics, alcoholism, and failure seems like fodder for a visual novel, walking simulator, or maybe horror game. But in fact, Disco Elysium , by Estonian art collective ZA/UM, is a role-playing game. And a very, very good one. On this list, only Baldur’s Gate 3 can compete with it in terms of the dizzying freedom it offers the player in how they make choices, define their character, and respond to situations.

Although Disco Elysium was deeply influenced by tabletop RPGs, don’t expect much turn-based combat. Do expect a deep and fascinating system for skills and leveling — in this game, ideas like feminism are stat buffs — and do expect to build and explore your detective character’s psychology and worldview through tortured, sometimes amusingly overwritten internal dialogues with different aspects of his own psyche. The backdrop is a noir-ish murder-mystery in a dilapidated town that’s part 1970s, part steampunk. Disco Elysium is utterly idiosyncratic; there’s nothing else like it, and probably never will be. —OW

Dragon’s Dogma 2

There are a lot of epic fantasy RPGs on this list already — including deep, dense masterpieces such as Baldur’s Gate 3 and Elden Ring — so why would we need another? To be honest, you really need to play Capcom’s unique take on the ubiquitous genre to answer that question for yourself.

This is a game that’s slow to reveal itself, and initially a little confusing and even janky. But eventually you realize it’s not a technical game like those others I mentioned, but a constantly surprising fantasy adventure simulator that unfolds in real time. With its genuinely wild world, unpredictable monsters, and even more unpredictable Pawn NPCs that fight alongside you, Dragon’s Dogma 2 is guaranteed to generate gaming stories you’ll never forget. —OW

The intricate, demanding action-RPG format FromSoftware started with Demon’s Souls gets blown out into an epic open-world adventure in Elden Ring , and miraculously loses nothing in the transition. What it gains is sheer scale, breadth to go with the traditional Soulslike depth, as well as a sense of freedom and discovery that the warrens of the Dark Souls games could never provide. But it’s still as mysterious and sorrowful as fans of From’s string of dark fantasy masterpieces have come to expect.

You have to be up for a challenge: Elden Ring is still not an easy game, although like its predecessors its difficulty has been overstated. This is, as ever, a game in which patience, restraint, and planning will take you just as far if not further than razor-sharp reactions, even in some of the most testing boss encounters in gaming history. But the openness of Elden Ring ’s world, and the sheer flexibility of its class designs, make it From’s most inviting game to date, without sacrificing any of its imposing stature. Final Fantasy 14

Final Fantasy 14 is the only massively multiplayer role-playing game to truly emerge from World of Warcraft ’s shadow, and to rival Blizzard’s game for popularity, in 20 years. It almost never happened. On its original launch in 2010, it was a disastrous failure, but Square Enix doubled down and enlisted producer Naoki Yoshida to relaunch it in a completely revamped version in 2013. Moving from PlayStation 3 to PS4 and now PS5 over that time, it has steadily built in reputation and popularity, and it can now be considered one of the all-time titans of the genre. Gaming has rarely seen a comeback story like it.

The reasons for its success aren’t complicated, but they must have been near-impossible to pull off. It’s a beautiful world, with strong storylines and appealing characters, deeply grounded in Final Fantasy lore and fan service. It’s a solid MMORPG with great flexibility and individuality in the character classes, and fun PvE dungeons and raids. It puts players first, even implementing a “story mode” that allows players to solo climactic multiplayer content. And — the trickiest feat of all — it plays beautifully on console, something no other MMORPG (save perhaps its predecessor, Final Fantasy 11 ) has managed. —OW

God of War Ragnarök

Santa Monica Studio’s grandstanding cinematic beat-’em-up is the latest perfection of a certain kind of high-gloss, low-brain-cell entertainment Sony has always done so well. That’s not to say it’s not clever — there’s a very good, well-balanced action game in here, which interlocks neatly with some understated but satisfying RPG-lite character advancement. There’s also a smart script that assembles a lovable family of weirdos around our gruff, god-killing hero, Kratos, as it explores the soapier side of Norse mythology. And it’s topped off with the absolutely inspired casting of Richard Schiff ( The West Wing ’s Toby) as an irritable, grousing Odin.

It’s just that it all goes down so easy — intentionally so. This isn’t Baldur’s Gate 3 or Elden Ring ; it’s a largely on-rails spectacle full of delightfully brainless button-mashing, surprisingly touching acting, and a steady drumbeat of Big Moments to keep you alert. It also looks incredible, considering it was a cross-generational release with PlayStation 4. Just an extremely solid blockbuster. — OW

Gran Turismo 7

Somehow, over 25 years in, a PlayStation console just doesn’t feel complete until it has its Gran Turismo game. That happened for PS5 in 2022 when it got GT7 , which, despite some initial missteps around the grindiness of the economy and some overpriced microtransactions, is actually one of the most roundly satisfying, accessible, and just plain fun games in the series’ history.

Joyfully, instead of chasing trends, Polyphony Digital leans into Gran Turismo’s unique and slightly stuffy character to make a game that’s endearing in the way that it overflows with a nerdy love of cars and racing. The driving simulation is excellent and the photorealistic visuals are peerless, of course — but what reels you in is the charming single-player Café mode that takes you on a guided tour of the game’s thoughtfully selected garage, complete with sweetly enthusiastic talking heads.

In a genre that often focuses on customization and box-ticking features, Gran Turismo 7 feels wonderfully authored and personal in all its myriad activities, from licence tests to mission challenges or the Scapes photo mode. It also has, in GT Sport, a superb online racing suite that’s both accessible and fair. Gran Turismo is still the thinking person’s racing series. —OW

If you only get one indie game for your PS5, make it Supergiant Games’ definitive dungeon crawl set in the world of Greek myth. Hades swept every game of the year award in 2020 — a rare feat for a small independent production — before it had even landed on PlayStation and Xbox platforms. It’s not hard to understand why. It’s a game of immense depth but also huge charm, that’s as sophisticated in its funny, gossipy storytelling as it is in its razor-sharp combat and roguelike-inspired structure.

Hades casts the player as Zagreus, the rebellious son of Hades, lord of the Underworld, who’s making repeated attempts to escape his father’s realm. Every run takes you a little further through a randomized labyrinth of deadly rooms, using random boons and weapons bestowed upon Zagreus by the indulgent gods of Olympus. Hades is never the same, but you’re always mastering it, and discovering more about its sharply written gallery of gods; also, the mythical setting, where death is a trifle and immortality is a bore, is a perfect fit for the Groundhog Day action of a roguelike. Simply put, a masterpiece. —OW

Helldivers 2

What if Starship Troopers was a co-operative, third-person shooter instead of a satirical sci-fi movie? It would be awesome, that’s what. Arrowhead Game Studios’ sleeper hit is a very simple formula, and that’s why it works so well. Most of its best ideas were already worked out in its 2015 predecessor; what this sequel does is to transplant those ideas from a top-down, isometric blaster into a full-fledged, fully 3D bug-battling warzone.

The response from players to this instantly appealing concept was so immediate that Arrowhead’s servers were completely overwhelmed at launch. Once the dust has settled, what’s revealed is just a perfect, no-frills online game for enjoying with a squad of pals: tactical, lethal, surprising, often tense or funny, and garnished with some juicily unsubtle satire. There’s even a massively multiplayer element whereby the whole player-base works together to unlock new challenges. This is what live-service games should be like. —OW

Hitman: World of Assassination

There’s never been anything else quite like IO’s Hitman games, whose genre could be described as “stealth murder comedy by way of improv theater.” Though they have all the trappings of cool video game ultraviolence, they’re up to something much more sly and subversive, with each level a giant, fascinating social machine to poke around before you throw a murderous spanner into it.

And there’s never been a better Hitman release than the wonderful World of Assassination , a kind of best-of compilation of the most recent trilogy of Hitman games. Along with all those dazzling levels, you get a broad and highly entertaining suite of game modes, including player-created contracts, time-limited elusive targets, and the challenging escalations. The infinite murder simulator of the roguelike-inspired Freelancer mode is the cherry on top. In a very real sense, it’s the only Hitman game you will ever need. —OW

Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth

The Yakuza games, now known by the translation of their original Japanese title Like a Dragon, are an acquired taste, but a taste that has now been acquired by millions. There’s perhaps never been a better time to get involved: Infinite Wealth is the most ambitious, surreal, emotional, hilarious, and just plain huge game in the series yet — once it gets going.

You’ll need to get through hours of backstory and exposition first, filling you in on the events of (at least) 7 games in this soapy series. Once you do, though, an astonishing playground opens up for Ichiban, Kiryu, and friends in Hawaii (the series’ first detour from Japan), with deep, silly turn-based combat, hours of drama, and dozens of diversions and minigames, including surprisingly full-fledged knock-offs of Pokémon, Animal Crossing , and Crazy Taxi. An endearingly barmy hymn to excess that keeps on giving. —OW

Pacific Drive

Here’s a real oddity: a strange, sometimes exasperating, often completely enthralling mix of driving simulator, roguelike, and scavenge-and-craft survival game. In Pacific Drive , you explore an irradiated wilderness in the Pacific Northwest, where some gigantic science experiment went wrong decades previously. In the Zone, reality and the laws of physics are coming apart. Fortunately you have the ultimate vehicle for exploring this landscape: an old station wagon.

This rickety old car makes for an unlikely, but brilliant, video game protagonist: Although you often get out and explore on foot, the station wagon is the heart of Pacific Drive , a sort of mobile base or suit of armor on wheels that you will constantly need to patch up, fix, and upgrade. It’s a real character, and by the end you’ll be more attached to it than any other car in video games. —OW

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is that next-gen title that awes you the entire way through. It looks stunning, the controller plays a big role in the gameplay, and the amount of bolts and particles on screen at any given time can be jaw-dropping.

But as expensive as Rift Apart looks, it’s also just a great Ratchet & Clank game. Rift Apart takes classic Ratchet & Clank ideas and modernizes them. The series’ famous wacky weapons have unique alternate fire modes, activated by how hard you pull down the trigger. And the typical collect-a-thon aspects get a refresh thanks to the exciting Rift system and a detailed map.

But the latest Ratchet also tells a story that changes its world forever, adding Rivet and Kit as another powerful duo in its ever-expanding cast of characters. If you’ve spent years playing Ratchet games, Rift Apart likely won’t surprise you outside of its visuals. But if you’ve missed the series, or haven’t played them in years, Rift Apart is a great reminder of why the Lombax and his robot pal have stuck around for 19 years. — Ryan Gilliam

Capcom’s 2005 classic Resident Evil 4 is pretty much unimpeachable. It’s one of the all-time great horror games, with perfect pacing that breaks up full-bore action with creeping dread, controls and camera that induce tension whilst keeping the game fluid and instinctive to play, and a classically Resident Evil tone that’s pitched somewhere between dead serious and mildly camp.

There’s also no arguing with its 2023 remake , which lavishly overhauls the gory, gritty visuals whilst updating the game just enough to feel contemporary and slick, but not so much that it loses its essential character. Back in 2005, this game was a high-stakes reinvention for the Resident Evil series. Now, it’s the standard by which these games are judged — and still a hard-charging joy to play. —OW

Returnal was the first PS5 game, outside of the free Astro’s Playroom , that really took advantage of what the new DualSense controller could do. To test the limits of the controller’s feedback, Housemarque took its refined arcade shooter craft and planted it in a third-person roguelite. The result is a game that demands precision — precision that your fancy new controller helps afford with its haptic triggers and immersive rumble.

Returnal ’s controller feedback is, outside of some stunning visuals, its most iconic feature. And because of some of the game’s downfalls, like its uneven repetition and imbalanced Parasite system, it’s perhaps doomed to be remembered mainly as a great showcase game for the PlayStation 5. But Returnal is still a game every PlayStation 5 owner should pick up and play, if only to feel every bit of that $500 rumble in your fingers. — Ryan Gilliam

The word for Spider-Man 2 is confidence: This is an astonishingly slick, enjoyable, and just very together superhero adventure that even has the ambition to take some big storytelling risks as it puts its own spin on Spider-Man lore. It pays off in perhaps the most accessible and glossily entertaining PS5 game to date.

At its core, this is an iteration on — and combination of — what worked in the first Spider-Man and Miles Morales , getting great mileage from bringing the two heroes together. You have the same peerless web-swinging traversal system and fluid combat combined with a more bustling city and a much more upbeat and socially conscious ( and less cop-centric ) attitude. As it’s a PS5 exclusive this time, there are impressive new tech flourishes too, like the lightning-quick fast travel and the ray-traced reflections on all those glass skyscrapers.

But what really makes Spider-Man 2 come out swinging is Insomniac’s greater confidence as a storyteller, taking on perhaps the ultimate Spider-Man storyline — the advent of the symbiotes and Venom — and twisting it into an even more potent form, staging some unforgettable set-pieces along the way. — OW

Street Fighter 6

There’s so much to love about Capcom’s textbook revival of its fighting game champion: the deep, rewarding combat system, the plethora of ways to play, the series-best lineup of old and new characters, and the gloriously extravagant, pugnacious, and characterful design and animation that brings it all to vivid life. It’s absolutely a new high water mark in fighting games — but the best part of it is that it’s also a revolution in accessibility for the genre.

Street Fighter 6 introduces a number of important innovations aimed at opening up this sometimes intimidating competitive gaming space. There’s the World Tour campaign that patiently teaches you the fundamentals as you level up a custom fighter. And there are also new control schemes — the streamlined Modern setup and the assisted button-mashing Dynamic mode — designed to welcome players of every skill and experience level into the fray. As much of a blast as a casual party game as it is in ranked online play, Street Fighter 6 is the first fighting game in a very, very long time that can claim to be for everyone. —Oli Welsh

Tetris Effect is the greatest puzzle game of all time — perhaps the greatest game of all time, period — as reimagined by Sega’s former trance-master-in-chief Tetsuya Mizuguchi, the author of such minimalist trips as Rez and Lumines . On paper, Tetris Effect is very close to the latter, a puzzle game that yokes the block-matching action to a metronomic techno beat. In spirit, though, it’s more like the former: an almost spiritual, transcendental audiovisual experience that sweeps the player into a higher state of mind.

It’s daring to make such a dazzling, enveloping experience out of such a visually simple game. But then again, if Mizuguchi’s aim is to induce a flow state in the player, he could scarcely choose a better vehicle than Tetris . Alexey Pajitnov’s design is so simple and satisfying that it operates on an almost subconscious level, and almost 40 years on, its global familiarity has become a virtue that dovetails nicely with Mizguchi’s themes of universality and hope. Star Wars: Outlaws PS5 Players Asked to Delete Save to Avoid Bugs

Ubisoft has politely asked some Star Wars: Outlaws PS5 players to delete their existing save file if they don’t have update 1.000.002 applied because they’ll run into game-breaking bugs. We have verified the authenticity of the email, which first circulated on Reddit, and can confirm that it was sent to select players.

Star Wars: Outlaws PS5 update 1.000.002 squashes bugs, but it’s also bad news

Update 1.000.002 comes with scant patch notes but is a chunky 8.59 GB patch that addresses numerous bugs. Patch notes state that the update adds support for 40 fps, fixes performance issues, and addresses numerous bugs.

Here’s the problem: a number of players were already well into their campaigns when the patch dropped, and now they’re being asked by Ubisoft to delete their saves and start over or they’re out of luck. The patch can’t retroactively fix the progression blockers, which has especially irked folks who paid for early access.

“Once you’ve confirmed you have the latest version, please start a new save to fully enjoy Star Wars: Outlaws as our team intended,” the email reads . “If you continue on a prior save you will unfortunately face issues and progression blockers.”

This doesn’t bode well for Ubisoft’s future “early access” schemes.

Do you have PlayStation 5 games you want to share with friends? You can easily do so with PS5's "Console Sharing and Offline Play" feature. You can game share with one other PSN account at a time; if you have other friends you want to share with, you'll need to repeat the process for each. Keep in mind you should only game share with friends you trust, as this involves sharing your PlayStation Network account information. Things You Should Know

Go to "Settings" → "Users and Accounts" → "Other" → enable "Console Sharing and Offline Play" for your PSN account and your friend's account.
Sign into the game share PlayStation Network account on your console or a friend's console.
Restore game licenses in "Settings" → "Users and Accounts" → "Restore Licenses" → "Restore".

Navigate to Settings .
Select Users and Accounts .
Select Other .
If it is already enabled, select Don't disable .
As this method involves sharing your PlayStation Network account with another PS5, be sure to game share only with people you trust. You should never give your account information to strangers.

Step 2 Log into your PlayStation Network account on the other PS5.

On the home screen, press and hold the PS button on your controller to open the Control Center.
Select Switch User .
Select Add User .
Enter the login details of the other PSN account.
