Scenic River Cruises FAQs

Your passport and visa.

Can scenic arrange my passport and visas?

No, Scenic and/or their employees and their agents are not responsible for passport, visa requirements, entry, health or other requirements of the countries visited or for any loss sustained by you for failing to comply with laws, regulations, orders and/or requirements of countries visited, and will not be liable for any costs or cancellation penalties or inconvenience where travelers do not have a travel authorization, and are not permitted to travel.

Can scenic organize my travel insurance?

No, this is the responsibility of the passenger; however your travel agent can do this on your behalf. We strongly advise you to take out travel insurance to cover any unforeseen circumstances, which may arise as defined in the respective proposal forms. It is a good idea to take your travel insurance documents with you.

Should I bring copies of my passport and visas?

Yes. As your passport will be kept on board the ship throughout the cruise portion for transit formality reasons, we recommend you bring a photocopy of your passport/visas with you to carry on you at all times when on shore.

What validity do I need on my passport?

All passengers are required to possess a passport valid for 6 months beyond the conclusion of their trip. Please note: If your nationality (passport) differs from the country in which you reside, please take the time to check carefully with your local consulates concerning visa and passport requirements for your travels. Holidays can be disrupted or have to be altered altogether if the correct documents cannot be supplied at airports or borders, so check very carefully that you have the required papers.

What visas do I require

Visa requirements can vary and it is the sole responsibility of each passenger to have the necessary visas and to comply with entry, health or other requirements of the countries visited. More advice can also be found at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s website.

Your Luggage

How much luggage can I bring on a scenic cruise?

The luggage allowance while on tour is one suitcase with a maximum size of 30 x 21 x 11 inches (76 x 53 x 28 cms) and weight of 44 lbs (20 kilograms). You may also carry a small backpack or the Scenic overnight bag on board the coach for the duration of the tour. Additional bags beyond the luggage allowance may incur additional charges and are to be settled directly to the hotel or as required. It is advised that you check airline luggage requirements directly with your most significant airline carrier.

How much luggage can I take on an aircraft?

It is advised that you check airline luggage requirements directly with your most significant airline carrier.

Is porterage included?

Handling and porterage of your luggage (as per the luggage allowance above) is included in your tour. Additional bags beyond the allowance may be charged or it may be the responsibility of the passenger to forward the baggage to another destination. Luggage handling is not included during any independent or non-escorted touring. In this situation, luggage handling and porterage will need to be organised directly with the hotel porters.

Should I attach the scenic luggage label provided prior to departure?

No, please wait until you have claimed your luggage at your destination airport. This will ensure airline companies will not tear off this tag, as it is required to easily identify your luggage for transfer services and hotels.

What clothing should I pack?

Casual sportswear for daytime that can be mixed/matched/layered A warm jacket/gloves/hat/scarf for cooler mornings and nights Swimwear Comfortable walking shoes with rubber soles for good grip Sunglasses and a sun hat Women require a minimum of one skirt or a dress

What else do I need to pack?

The following list may be useful when packing for your trip:

Airline tickets and passport (plus a photocopy and extra passport photos) Travel and travel insurance documentation, and itinerary (make a copy for your emergency contact) Travellers cheques/cash/debit or credit card and emergency contact numbers if lost or stolen, plus local currency for first day and a money belt Spare memory card for your digital camera or film in clear plastic containers Only those keys needed on return Personal medication and prescriptions, extra glasses/contacts and prescriptions Sunscreen, lip balm and insect repellent Pocket calculator, address book, journal and pens Tissues and anti-bacterial hand wipes or hand sanitiser Raincoat or umbrella Plastic bags for dirty laundry, washing powder and elastic clothesline Travel alarm clock, earplugs and sleep mask Adaptor plugs, mobile phone charger, battery charger Face cloth / flannel Small torch and batteries (there is minimal lighting at remote locations) Please note: All hotels on tour provide towels, irons, hair dryers, soap and shampoo within the room.

Asia tours:

First aid kit including anti-itch cream for insect bites, antibiotics and medication for motion sickness, diarrhea and vomiting Binoculars Multiple photocopies of your passport to assist with Hotel check in

What is the appropriate dress for visiting holy places?

When visiting churches and monasteries, modest dress is required i.e. no shorts, miniskirts, or sleeveless tops.

Will my Luggage be secure?

We strongly advise that you do not pack anything of value in your check-in luggage and that you check-in ONLY your own suitcases. Do not carry items packed by other people. Never accept packages or articles from anyone unknown to you to carry on board the aircraft.

Health and Fitness

Are there any health risks that I should be aware of?

Viral gastroenteritis is a very common virus that can be found almost anywhere, but its opportunity to spread is greater in contained environments. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. It may also include fever, stomach issues and headache. The symptoms usually start 12 to 48 hours after viral infection and can last from 1 to 10 days. Most people who become sick with viral gastroenteritis recover quickly with no further problems. However if the illness is more severe, further medical care may be required to treat dehydration. The most effective protection from personal contamination is ensuring strict attention to personal hygiene and in particular, frequent and thorough hand washing with soap and water and refraining from hand-to-mouth contact.

Colds and other viruses can spread quickly in an enclosed area such as a ship. Continue to practice common-sense hygiene and respiratory courtesy. Wash your hands often and cover your coughs and sneeze. It is recommended that passengers carry an anti-bacterial hand sanitizer, which does not require rinsing with water. Use a sanitiser frequently i.e. after shore excursions, prior to meals and throughout the day. If you have any questions regarding your health or safety while on tour, please do not hesitate to ask your Tour Director.

Motion sickness can be a problem for some people when cruising, flying or travelling on coaches and trains and it is a good idea to take precautionary measures. Drugs for treating motion sickness can be purchased at most pharmacies in Canada, however a side effect can by drowsiness. Alternatives such as ginger tablets and acupressure wristbands are also available and work well for some people.

Can I take prescription medication?

Yes and its advisable to pack an ample supply of any medicine you are taking, copies of prescriptions and the telephone/fax number of your doctor. Because of strict drug laws in some countries, drugs you take on doctor’s orders should be carried in their original container showing the prescription label. Always keep your medication in your hand luggage.

Can I travel in a wheelchair?

Due to the structure of old buildings, access to some establishments may not be convenient for wheelchair use, and facilities for the disabled in general may be limited. Many areas are pedestrian only. Marksburg Castle has a number of stairs which may impact guests with limited mobility access to all touring areas, but this will not impede participation of the medieval banquet.

Vietnam and Cambodia:

We regret that wheelchairs cannot be accommodated on these tours.

Should I provide scenic with my health and fitness details prior to travelling?

We will supply a Health and Fitness form in your travel wallet. These forms are designed to provide us with instant information if an emergency should arise. These forms will be returned unopened at the completion of the tour. It is not compulsory to fill out these forms but is strongly recommended.

  • We strongly recommend a visit to your doctor and dentist prior to your tour.
  • If you are aged 70 or over at the Tour Departure date you must provide us with a doctor’s letter confirming you are fit and healthy enough to take part in the specified tour including reference to the itinerary, destinations and tour departure date.
  • You must advise us of any pre-existing medical conditions that might reasonably be expected to increase your risk of requiring medical attention, affect the normal conduct of the tour and/or the enjoyment of other tour members.
  • You will be required to fill in our Health and Fitness form and hand it to your Tour Director on the tour departure date.

What sort of first aid medical items should I bring with me?

It may be useful to bring a supply of basic items with you. A first aid kit may include band-aids, antiseptic, aspirin, cough medicine, throat lozenges, cold and flu medication, diarrhoea medication, mild laxative, eye ointments/drops for minor infections, a general antibiotic and any special medications you may need personally. Please remember to bring a letter from your doctor or a copy of the prescription for any medication that you are carrying with you.

What sort of fitness level do I require to travel?

We welcome you if you have a disability or other special need, provided you are able to care for yourself or are accompanied by a companion capable of providing all the assistance you require. Please note that although we will use reasonable endeavours to provide you with all the activities on your Itinerary, depending on your disability, you may not be able to participate in every activity and the Tour Director will have the right to refuse your participation if the Tour Director believes your health and safety or the health and safety of other passengers may be impacted by your participation. You must advise us (or your travel agent) of any disability, medical condition or dietary requirement at the time of booking.

It is not possible for large coaches to be used for some city sightseeing therefore many towns and cities will be visited by way of walking tours and accordingly, a reasonable level of fitness is required.

  • Much of Europe is based on a myriad of old buildings and there are split-levels, steps and uneven surfaces everywhere. High-heeled shoes are not suitable for cobblestone streets and steep inclines in medieval towns and cities. It is essential to have comfortable, rubber-soled walking shoes.
  • Due to the amount of walking on your cruise shore excursions, which typically run for up to 3 hours, a reasonable level of fitness is required.

Please Note:  Scenic reserves the right, at its discretion to cancel your booking and refund the money paid by you, less any unrecoverable costs, if it is deemed you are not suitable for the trip booked. It is your responsibility to advise Scenic of any pre-existing medical conditions that might reasonably be expected to increase the risk of you requiring medical attention, or that might affect the normal conduct of a trip and the enjoyment of other trip participants.

  • The land touring program requires passengers to be able to walk for up to 0.6 – 1.2 miles (1 – 2 kilometres) over steps and uneven ground.
  • For your safety and enjoyment, you should be in good physical condition to participate in all tours.

What vaccinations do I require?

Recommended vaccinations and other health protection measures vary and are subject to change. You must consult your doctor on current vaccinations needed for your destination. Also please refer to the Canada Government’s Travel Voyage website for additional information.

  • If you are entering India from an infected area such as Africa, then you must be vaccinated against Yellow Fever.
  • Hepatitis (both A and B, depending on your individual circumstances), vaccination shots are also recommended, such as a booster shot for tetanus.

Will my special requirements be met throughout the tour?

Your special requirements have been passed onto all suppliers. Special requirements refer to airline seating, special dietary and medical needs. These requirements are on a request basis only and cannot be guaranteed by Scenic. We strongly advise that you reconfirm your meal requests with the Scenic Cruise Director upon joining your tour.

Weather and climate

How do I know if I am suffering from altitude sickness?

How altitude sickness affects you can range from mild to severe and occurs because less oxygen is reaching the muscles and the brain, requiring the heart and lungs to compensate by working harder. Symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) usually develop during the first 24 hours at altitude but may be delayed up to 3 weeks. Mild symptoms include headache, lethargy, dizziness, difficulty sleeping and loss of appetite. AMS may become severe without warning. Please consult your doctor before departure to ensure you have an adequate level of fitness and health.

What can I do to try to prevent symptoms of acute mountain sickness?

  • Drink extra fluids. The mountain air is dry and cold and moisture is lost as you breathe.
  • Evaporation of sweat may occur unnoticed and result in dehydration
  • Eat light, high carbohydrate meals for more energy
  • Avoid alcohol as it may increase the risk of dehydration
  • Avoid sedatives
  • Altitude Sickness tablets are available to help prevent/ reduce symptoms, consult your physician for advice on whether these are suitable for you.

We have always set a high standard as to how we run and operate our trips, from the facilities, equipment and gear to the amazing guides, photographers and office staff who make it happen. You will get the same great experience every time you sign up for a trip with us. Our passion for whitewater has not changed since our first season in 1977 and our excitement about rafting is still apparent today. As a company we look for that same passion in all of our staff. Our staff loves being on the water and sharing that experience with others, and we feel this is what makes every trip with SRT stand above the rest. We can’t wait to see you on the river.

  • Chevron down WHICH TRIP IS RIGHT FOR ME?

Consider a few things when choosing a rafting trip:

  • What level of excitement are you looking for?
  • What is appropriate for your group’s ages and adventure level?
  • How much time do you want to invest in your rafting trip?

Our helpful staff is happy to answer any questions and help you choose the best trip to make your rafting adventure the highlight of your Colorado vacation.

  • Chevron down IS RAFTING SAFE?

All of our guides are extensively trained in river rescue, first aid, and CPR. Many have advanced certifications such as Swift Water Rescue Technician, Wilderness First Responder, and EMT. Engaging in rafting and related activities involve inherent risks that cannot necessarily be predicted or controlled and can lead to injury and property damage. Please review our waiver for more information. We ask that you choose a trip within the ability levels of all participants in your group.

  • Chevron down DO I NEED A RESERVATION?

It is the best way to ensure you are not disappointed. We often have trips available tomorrow, so last minute reservations are worth a call. You cannot book online within 24 hours of trip time. We pride ourselves in keeping every group together and not splitting them up based on the number of overall rafters on a trip. This takes a little organization. Call 970.641.3131 or  click here  to book online!

  • Chevron down HOW DO I MAKE A RESERVATION?

We are happy to answer any questions and help you choose the perfect Colorado rafting adventure. Call us at 970.641.3131. You can also book most trips online, just be sure you are 24 hours ahead of trip time.

  • Chevron down DO YOU OFFER GROUP DISCOUNTS?

Yes, we offer group discounts to groups of 24 or more. To qualify for group rates we do ask for 1 person to be responsible for all payments. Group rates do not apply if everyone in your group is paying individually. * Discounts cannot be combined with any other offers.

  • Chevron down WHAT ARE THE CANCELLATION AND CHANGE POLICIES?

Scenic River Tours runs all trips rain or shine, regardless of the weather. Please be on time. If you arrive late for your trip we may not be able to accommodate you and your trip will be forfeited.  Within 48 hours of your trip you are responsible for full payment of each spot reserved and no refunds are available.  Cancellations and changes cannot be made online or by email. They must be confirmed by a Scenic River Tours representative. Scenic River Tours reserves the right to cancel or alter any trip.

  • Chevron down SHOULD WE TIP OUR GUIDE?

Gratuities are accepted and appreciated. If your trip was made better by your hardworking guide, a tip is a great way to say thanks. If you did not enjoy your experience for any reason, please bring it to the attention of our management.

  • Chevron down WHAT TYPE OF EQUIPMENT DO YOU NEED TO GO RAFTING?

We will provide everything you need for your rafting adventure! Each guest is fitted with the required Type V Coast Guard approved life vest. We offer wetsox, wetsuits, paddle jackets and helmets, but not all are necessary on every trip. We have footwear for you on all our Taylor River trips. Our raft fleet is purchased through Hyside Inflatables. Hyside uses the toughest and most durable Hypalon fabric to build boats. We are very proud of the way we maintain and upgrade our fleet on a regular basis.

  • Chevron down WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?

You should plan on being wet! Swimsuits and nylon shorts generally work best; avoid cotton as it draws away warmth. For layering, stick to synthetic fabrics that insulate when wet, like fleece and polypropylene. Wool also works well. You must wear sturdy footwear such as river sandals with an ankle strap, or tennis shoes that can get wet (no flip-flops or crocs). Sunglasses with a strap and sunscreen are important for sunny days on the river. A FULL SET of Dry clothing and a towel for after the trip are critical.

  • Chevron down WHAT SHOULD I BRING?

A  FULL CHANGE  of dry clothes and towel for after your trip. Your sunglass strap retainer. We sell a ton of them, but we know you already have at least one somewhere! We provide action photographs for viewing/ purchase of your group rafting after the trip. You should also bring along any prescribed medication you may require such as epi-pens or asthma inhalers, and have a chat with your guide about your needs. Anything you bring on the raft will get wet and could be lost, so we recommend leaving all valuables such as jewelry, cell phones and other electronics at home or in your car. We will check your cars keys in the front desk once you are ready to head to the river with us.

Please do not bring pets. Our parking areas do not have adequate shade to keep your furry friends cool in the hot summer sun.

  • Chevron down ARE THERE RESTROOMS AVAILABLE DURING THE TRIP?

Yes! There are restrooms at the office, again at the put-in after we get to the river, halfway through the trip, and at the end of the trip before we head back to the office. We want you to be comfortable!

  • Chevron down DO I NEED TO KNOW HOW TO SWIM?

All guests are outfitted with and required to wear a Coast Guard approved Type V life jacket that is specifically designed for whitewater rafting. All rafters must be willing and able to participate in their own rescue and need to be able to get to the boat or shore by themselves. Participants who can swim are more comfortable in the water and it makes it much easier to get out of the river should you find yourself out of the boat.

  • Chevron down DO I NEED TO SIGN A WAIVER?

All participants (and a Parent or Legal Guardian, if the participant is a minor) are required to sign an Acknowledgement and Assumption of Risks and Release and Indemnity Agreement before participating, and understand that they assume responsibility and liability in the event of an injury or other loss.  Click here to download a copy of our waiver.

Any medical or mental condition or physical disability should be disclosed on the Acknowledgement and Assumption of Risks and Release and Indemnity Agreement. In addition please advise your guide/trip leader prior to your trip. Rafting is not recommended for persons with serious medical conditions or pregnant women.

  • Chevron down CAN I REQUEST A SPECIFIC GUIDE?

Yes! All of our guides are fun and professional, but if you have a specific guide in mind you are welcome to request him or her. We will do our best to make sure you get to raft with your requested guide, but it may not always be possible, based on scheduling and availability.

  • Chevron down HOW ARE RAPIDS RATED?

Fast moving water with riffles and small waves. Few obstructions, all obvious and easily missed with little training. The risk to swimmers is slight; self-rescue is easy.

Straightforward rapids with wide, clear channels which are evident without scouting. Occasional maneuvering may be required, but rocks and medium-sized waves are easily missed by trained paddlers. Swimmers are seldom injured and group assistance, while helpful, is seldom needed. Rapids that are at the upper end of this difficulty range are designated “Class II+”.

Rapids with moderate, irregular waves which may be difficult to avoid. Complex maneuvers in fast current and good boat control in tight passages or around ledges are often required; large waves or strainers may be present but are easily avoided. Strong eddies and powerful current effects can be found, particularly on large-volume rivers. Injuries while swimming are rare; self-rescue is usually easy but group assistance may be required to avoid long swims. Rapids that are at the lower or upper end of this difficulty range are designated “Class III-” or “Class III+” respectively.

Intense, powerful but predictable rapids requiring precise boat handling in turbulent water. Depending on the character of the river, it may feature large, unavoidable waves and holes or constricted passages demanding fast maneuvers under pressure. A fast, reliable eddy turn may be needed to initiate maneuvers, scout rapids, or rest. Rapids may require “must make” moves above dangerous hazards. Risk of injury to swimmers can be moderate to high, and water conditions may make self-rescue difficult. Group assistance for rescue is often essential and requires teamwork. Rapids that are at the lower or upper end of this difficulty range are designated “Class IV-” or “Class IV+” respectively.

Extremely long, obstructed, or very violent rapids which expose a paddler to added risk. Drops may contain large, unavoidable waves and holes or steep, congested chutes with complex, demanding routes. Rapids may continue for long distances between pools, demanding a high level of fitness. What eddies exist may be small, turbulent, or difficult to reach. At the high end of the scale, several of these factors may be combined. Scouting is recommended but may be difficult. Swims are dangerous, and rescue is often difficult even for experts. Proper equipment, extensive experience, and practiced rescue skills are essential.

This classification is generally reserved for rapids that are considered un-runnable.

Scenic River Cruises FAQs

scenic river cruises faq

Can Scenic accommodate special dietary requirements?

When you book, let us know your dietary needs and our gourmet chefs will do their best to accommodate them. Please inform the Cruise Director when you board. The cuisine is freshly prepared on board the ship every day, and every restaurant has vegan and vegetarian dishes.

What is included when I book a cruise with Scenic?

Scenic prides themselves on being all-inclusive, and we really mean it! So, that’s free dining, complementary beverages, all tours and excursions, flights, transfers, Wi-Fi, porterage, port charges, and taxes. There really are no hidden extras.

scenic river cruises faq

Could changing water levels affect my Scenic cruise?

River levels naturally vary depending on the time of year and to reflect weather conditions like drought or excessive rainfall. Sometimes, itineraries can change based on the level of the river, but Scenic always provides alternatives of similar interest and enjoyment, and guests are kept fully informed of any changes.

What is the language on Scenic Space-Ships?

The language on board is English, and all Scenic staff, crew, and tour guides speak English. All announcements on the ship are in English.

Why does the Sun Deck on Scenic vessels have opening times?

There are times when the Sun Deck is not open, and there is no access to the Vitality Pool for safety reasons because of low bridges on some European waterways. Your ship’s Captain will keep guests informed of when these times are on your cruise.

Are guests allowed to take prescription medicine on board Scenic cruise ships?

Prescription medicines are permitted on board Scenic vessels, and guests should ensure they have enough to cover the duration of their holiday. Due to drug laws in some countries, the medication needs to be in its original packaging with the prescription label clearly visible. Keep the medicines in your hand luggage when travelling through airports or border crossings, as this makes it easier for officials to inspect.

Consider the Weather and Climate of the Destination

As you embark on your scenic river cruise, take a moment to consider the weather and climate of your destination – it’s like stepping into a picturesque postcard with each passing mile.

When it comes to packing essentials, one of the most important things to keep in mind is the appropriate footwear. Since you’ll be spending a lot of time exploring the various stops along the river, having comfortable shoes is essential. Opt for sturdy walking shoes or sneakers that’ll provide support and cushioning for long days of exploration.

Additionally, consider the weather conditions of your destination. If you’re cruising in a colder climate, pack waterproof boots or shoes with good traction to navigate any rain or snow. On the other hand, if you’re cruising in a warmer climate, lightweight and breathable shoes’ll be more suitable.

Dress comfortably for long days of exploration by packing the right footwear and get ready for an unforgettable adventure.

Dress Comfortably for Long Days of Exploration

Get ready to experience unforgettable adventures along the waterways while feeling relaxed and at ease throughout your journey.

When it comes to dressing comfortably for long days of exploration on a scenic river cruise, there are a few key things to keep in mind.

First and foremost, comfortable footwear is a must. You’ll be doing a lot of walking and exploring, so make sure to pack a pair of sturdy, supportive shoes.

Secondly, it’s important to dress for different climates. Depending on the destination, the weather can vary from hot and sunny to cool and breezy. Be prepared for all types of weather by packing lightweight layers that can easily be added or removed as needed.

Lastly, don’t forget to pack a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun’s rays.

As you embark on your adventure, make sure to dress appropriately for onboard activities and excursions to ensure a seamless and enjoyable experience.

Dress Appropriately for Onboard Activities

Don your dapper duds for delightful diversions during your time on the ship. Dressing appropriately for onboard activities is essential to ensure comfort and enjoyment. Consider the weather when selecting your attire, as river cruises can take you through various climates. Layering is key, allowing you to adjust to changing temperatures throughout the day. Additionally, proper footwear is crucial for both comfort and safety. Opt for comfortable shoes that provide good support, as you may be walking or standing for extended periods during shore excursions. To give you a visual representation of these ideas, here is a table showcasing weather considerations and appropriate footwear:

As you navigate through the wonders of your river cruise, be mindful of cultural etiquette and dress codes, ensuring an immersive and respectful experience.

Be Mindful of Cultural Etiquette and Dress Codes

Make sure you respect cultural etiquette and dress codes to fully immerse yourself in the diverse experiences awaiting you on your voyage.

When visiting different countries and cultures on a scenic river cruise, it’s important to be mindful of their cultural sensitivities and dress appropriately. Many religious sites have strict dress codes, so it’s crucial to dress modestly and respectfully. This means avoiding clothing that’s too revealing or offensive.

It’s always a good idea to carry a scarf or shawl to cover your shoulders or head, if necessary. By respecting these cultural norms, you not only show your appreciation for the local customs but also create a more meaningful and authentic travel experience.

So, don’t forget the essentials and accessories that’ll allow you to navigate these cultural expectations seamlessly.

Don’t Forget the Essentials and Accessories

When it comes to essentials for a scenic river cruise, there are a few key items that I never leave home without.

First and foremost, I always bring a hat or cap for sun protection. The sun can be quite strong on the water, and having a hat to shield my face and neck is essential.

Additionally, I always pack a lightweight scarf or shawl for versatile styling. Not only does it add a touch of elegance to my outfits, but it also comes in handy on cooler evenings or when I want to cover up a bit more.

Finally, I never forget to bring a small daypack for excursions and sightseeing. It’s the perfect size to carry all my essentials like sunscreen, a water bottle, and my camera, while still being comfortable to wear throughout the day.

Bring a Hat or Cap for Sun Protection

Wearing a hat or cap during a scenic river cruise is essential for sun protection, as it helps to shield your face and head from harmful UV rays. In fact, studies have shown that wearing a hat can reduce the risk of sunburn by up to 30%.

To ensure maximum protection, it’s important to choose a hat with a wide brim that covers your face, neck, and ears. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen to any exposed skin for added defense. Pair your hat or cap with a stylish pair of sunglasses to protect your eyes from the bright sun and glare off the water.

Now, let’s talk about another versatile accessory you should pack – a lightweight scarf or shawl that can be used for both style and warmth.

Pack a Lightweight Scarf or Shawl for Versatile Styling

As I mentioned before, it’s important to protect yourself from the sun while on a scenic river cruise. But aside from the practical aspects, it’s also important to look stylish and put together. That’s where a lightweight scarf or shawl comes in handy.

Not only does it add a touch of elegance to any outfit, but it also serves as a versatile accessory that can be worn in multiple ways. Whether you choose to drape it over your shoulders for a classic look, tie it around your neck for a chic touch, or even use it as a headscarf for a bohemian vibe, the options are endless.

And with so many lightweight shawl options available, you can easily pack a few different styles to suit your mood and outfit choices.

Speaking of packing, another essential item to bring on your river cruise is a small daypack for excursions and sightseeing. This will come in handy for carrying essentials like sunscreen, a water bottle, and your camera, allowing you to explore comfortably and capture all the beautiful moments along the way.

So, before we move on to the next section on small daypacks, make sure you have your versatile scarf or shawl packed and ready to go!

Bring a Small Daypack for Excursions and Sightseeing

Make sure to pack a small daypack for your excursions and sightseeing adventures, as it’ll be essential for carrying all your necessary items and ensuring you have a comfortable and convenient experience.

A daypack is a versatile accessory that allows for easy organization of your belongings. You can pack your camera, sunscreen, water bottle, and any other essentials you may need throughout the day. Look for a daypack with multiple compartments and pockets to keep everything easily accessible.

It’s also important to choose a lightweight and compact daypack to avoid adding unnecessary weight to your shoulders. With a well-packed daypack, you’ll be prepared for any adventure that comes your way.

Now, let’s talk about how to dress up for special occasions or theme nights.

Dress Up for Special Occasions or Theme Nights

I always make sure to check if the river cruise I’m going on has any themed events. It’s a great way to add some excitement and variety to the trip.

I love packing fun and festive outfits for theme nights, like a Hawaiian shirt for a tropical party or a fancy cocktail dress for a formal evening. And of course, I never forget to bring some accessories or props for those amazing photo opportunities that are bound to happen during the cruise.

It’s all about creating unforgettable memories!

Check if the Cruise Has Any Themed Events

Don’t miss out on the excitement of themed events during your scenic river cruise! These events are a great opportunity to immerse yourself in the culture and have some fun. Before you go, check if the cruise has any themed events planned, as this will help you decide what to pack. Whether it’s a masquerade ball, a 1920s jazz night, or a Hawaiian luau, there’s sure to be something for everyone. To give you an idea of what to expect, here’s a table showcasing a few examples of themed events and the corresponding cultural etiquette:

Now that you know what to expect, pack fun and festive outfits for theme nights. Let’s dive into the next section about packing for these exciting events.

Pack Fun and Festive Outfits for Theme Nights

After checking if the scenic river cruise has any themed events, it’s time to start packing fun and festive outfits for those special nights onboard. Theme nights can add an extra element of excitement and camaraderie to your cruise experience, so it’s important to dress the part.

Whether it’s a tropical beach party, a 1920s Gatsby soirée, or a disco night, there are endless possibilities for creative outfit ideas. Consider donning a Hawaiian shirt and a straw hat for the beach party, or channel your inner flapper with a fringed dress and a feathered headband for the Gatsby night. Don’t forget to accessorize! Statement jewelry, colorful scarves, and themed props can elevate your outfit and make it truly memorable.

So, get ready to shine and have a blast with your fun and festive ensembles! And speaking of accessories and props, consider bringing some along for those perfect photo opportunities during your cruise.

Consider Bringing Accessories or Props for Photo Opportunities

For those perfect photo opportunities on your themed nights, bring along some accessories or props to add an extra touch of fun and excitement to your cruise experience. Here are three items you should consider bringing for creative photo ideas:

Props for group photos: Gather a collection of fun props like hats, sunglasses, feather boas, or even inflatable toys. These props can be passed around among friends or fellow passengers, creating a lively and festive atmosphere in your pictures.

Creative photo ideas: Think outside the box and come up with unique photo concepts. Try using props in unexpected ways or creating fun poses. For example, you could use a parasol as a prop and pose with it against a stunning backdrop, or create a human pyramid with your travel companions.

Personalized accessories: Bring along personalized accessories like matching t-shirts, hats, or even temporary tattoos. This’ll not only add a sense of unity and camaraderie among your group but also make for memorable and Instagram-worthy photos.

With these accessories and props in hand, you’ll be ready to capture the most unforgettable moments of your scenic river cruise.

T he more than 2,300-mile Mississippi River invites travelers to discover its multifaceted heritage, with a vast range of deeply rooted culture, music and history. A cruise is a fantastic way to discover many of the riverfront cities on a single trip, from the comfort of your modern riverboat or traditional paddle-wheeler.

The following Mississippi River cruise itineraries can help you choose from cruises of various lengths and options for the Lower and Upper Mississippi. Note that all fares are listed as double occupancy (based on two people per cabin), and that they might not reflect taxes, port fees or gratuities. This inaugural 60-day voyage spans four major rivers and 20 states, making it the longest U.S. river cruise in history.

Viking River Cruises

Viking is no stranger to sailing Europe's rivers; the brand is synonymous with river cruising worldwide aboard its dozens of ships. However, Viking River Cruises is a newcomer to U.S. rivers, with its purpose-built ship: the 386-passenger Viking Mississippi. Looking to carve out its own niche in the American river cruising category, Viking claims it has the region's "first truly modern cruise ship" with its distinct Scandinavian design and expansive top sun deck with an infinity plunge pool.

Viking's mostly all-inclusive fares include a complimentary excursion in each port, destination lectures and performances, beer and wine at meals, free Wi-Fi, specialty coffees and teas, and more. The line offers five itineraries ranging in length from eight to 22 days along the Mighty Mississippi. Pre- and post-cruise extensions can be added to all voyages for an additional expense.

New Orleans & Southern Charms: Round-trip from New Orleans

Price: Starts at $3,999 per person

If you don't know which Viking Mississippi itinerary to choose, start here. A round-trip voyage from New Orleans is convenient for booking flights and offers an excellent opportunity to extend your stay in NOLA. Six guided tours are included across eight days, from the historic estates of Natchez to Vicksburg National Military Park. A stop in St. Francisville gives you the chance to marvel at some of the 140-plus buildings it has on the National Register of Historic Places.

If you extend your stay in New Orleans, plan to sample the local Creole cuisine and take in some of the city's nightly jazz entertainment. In the morning, grab a beignet and a steaming cup of chicory coffee au lait at the original Café du Monde in the French Market.

2024 dates: This itinerary is available on select dates in February, November and December.

Heart of the Delta: New Orleans to Memphis

Length: Nine days

Price: Starts at $4,299 per person

Similar to its round-trip New Orleans Southern Charms itinerary, the Heart of the Delta cruise begins in New Orleans and calls on the same five ports, before sailing through the Lower Mississippi and disembarking in Memphis. Enjoy scenic views of the serpentine river route – perhaps with expert commentary or a local cooking demonstration – and then take time to explore the birthplace of the Memphis blues, which is also a center of civil rights history.

2024 dates: In 2024, this cruise is available in February, March, April, May, June and November.

America's Great River: St. Paul to New Orleans

Price: Starts at $12,999 per person

This Viking voyage sails from St. Paul to New Orleans on a two-week trip that calls on 13 ports with one day of scenic sailing. This itinerary combines the best of Viking's other Mississippi sailings for an all-encompassing Midwestern and Southern experience with 12 guided tours.

Included in the fare is a tour of Graceland; a stroll through small-town Burlington, Iowa, to see Snake Alley, deemed the most crooked street in the world; and a visit to the National Eagle Center of Red Wing, among others. For an additional fee, hop on an airboat ride through the Atchafalaya Swamp in Baton Rouge or tour the Anheuser-Busch Brewery of St. Louis.

2024 dates: Viking has availability for this itinerary in July, September and October.

We cannot guarantee availability, even if you have made an on board reservation. Some activities require a minimum and maximum number of participants to operate.

When are Scenic Freechoice excursions available to book?

Will tenders be used at my port of call.

A mix of docking in port and tenders will be used for most voyages. Further information will be provided in your documentation.

Do I need a medical certificate to take a cruise?

In order for us to ensure your comfort and safety, all guests need to complete an online medical form, which will be available 90 days prior to sailing.

What are the medical services on board?

For your peace of mind, Scenic Eclipse is equipped with a medical centre offering primary care, staffed at all times by an on call doctor. You must advise us prior to finalising your booking of any pre-existing medical conditions that might increase your risk of requiring medical attention, affecting the normal conduct of the cruise and / or the enjoyment of other cruise guests. It is important to note, however, that there are no hospitals or doctors available in polar and remote regions, and emergency evacuation is extremely difficult and expensive. Cruising conditions can be unpredictable and rough waters may be encountered anytime. If you suffer from seasickness, please consult your Medical Practitioner before your cruise and always carry the recommended preventative medications. Our resident medical team can assist you with additional medication and services if required, with any relevant payments charged to your on board account.

Are children welcome on board?

Luxury expedition style cruising is not recommended for children under 12. Guests under the age of 18 years must be accompanied by an adult and must share their accommodation with an adult. No children programs or babysitting services are available on board.

What is the smoking policy?

Scenic Eclipse and Scenic Eclipse II are non-smoking vessels in all public areas. There is a designated outside smoking area on Deck 6 for guests. All suites, including suite verandah’s and terraces are non-smoking.

What is the Scenic Eclipse visitor policy?

In selected ports on request, visitors may be allowed on board. Visitation is not permitted on embarkation and disembarkation day. A visitor form is to be completed prior to the cruise. The guests will be informed once approved. Visitors will receive a visitor pass at ship’s gangway after they provide photo identification. Visitors will need to be accompanied at all times.

Currency & travel

We want to make sure your cruise runs smoothly on and off the ship, so our travel FAQs provide useful information on things such as local currencies, tipping, and charges.

Are credit cards accepted?

Many locations accept major credit cards, including Eurocard, MasterCard, Visa and American Express, and these can be used in some shops, hotels and restaurants. Please note that some establishments may charge a small fee for credit card transactions, or else enforce a minimum purchase amount. Before you travel, make sure your credit card and pin will work in the country you’re visiting; your bank will be able to help with this matter. Please note that on board Scenic Eclipse & Scenic Eclipse II, unfortunately, Debit Cards or Traveller’s cheques are not accepted.

Guests speaking to Cruise Director on board Scenic Diamond in the reception area.

Does Scenic cover tipping and gratuities?

Yes, tipping and gratuities for drivers, local guides, porters, and waiting staff are included in the total price of your holiday. Please note, tipping is not included for meals, drinks, taxis and transfers outside your itinerary and only applies to on board services. We’d recommend tipping 10-15% in restaurants (unless a service charge has already been applied) and 10-15% on taxi meters. As a rule, always pre-negotiate taxi fares before agreeing to travel.

Is it easy to exchange cash?

Cash or traveller’s cheques can be exchanged easily at hotels, banks or designated exchange bureaus. It’s also possible to buy small amounts of local currency on board your ship for a fee. For the best exchange rate, we’d recommend exchanging money before you travel.

Is porterage included?

Handling and porterage of your luggage (as per the luggage allowance) is included in your cruise or tour. Should you wish to carry bags beyond this allowance, porterage of these items may be charged or you may be responsible for handling the baggage yourself.

What currency do I need to take?

Most countries visited during a Scenic river cruise use the Euro, but some nations have retained their own currency; these include Scandinavian nations, Switzerland and the Eastern European States. For small purchases made on land or in small towns, we’d recommend carrying some local currency as ATMs or credit card facilities may not be available. When booking an ocean voyage or land journey, our experienced Reservations Team will be able to advise on the local currency for the destination you're travelling to.

Do the ships provide mobility-wheelchair access?

We welcome passengers with medical conditions or disabilities and can provide mobility provisions when notified in writing of a person's needs before boarding. However, please be aware that there may be limitations on board and during excursions. Some of our ships do not have elevators, and where there is an elevator on board it may not access all decks. While collapsible wheelchairs are permitted on board under appropriate circumstances, you must be able to climb up and down stairs on coaches, and some excursions may require you to negotiate cobblestones or climb steps. In addition, standard suites and bathrooms have significant thresholds and cabin doors which limit access, meaning they may not be wide enough to allow access to many wheelchairs. Please speak to a member of our team about your requirements prior to booking so that we can offer information on mobility and access.

Is it safe to travel to/in each of the countries?

If you have concerns about the safety of any destination on your cruise itinerary, we’d recommend making your own enquiries before you travel. The government’s foreign travel advice can be accessed here . This page offers up-to-date safety information on all the destinations listed on the Scenic website.

Is there an emergency contact for the ship?

Full email and telephone contact details for the ship can be found in your final documents.

What are the safety regulations on board Scenic ships?

After boarding your Scenic ship, our crew will run through a brief safety demonstration, highlighting the relevant safety information, as well the emergency procedure. Our ships are built to the highest specification to ensure complete guest safety, and feature a range of life-saving equipment, including sprinkler systems.
