The Best Guide to Following Fort Lauderdale Turtle Treks

Searching for a family-friendly activity that will provide lifelong memories? Get up close and personal with one of nature’s most loved animals : Sea turtles. Fort Lauderdale Turtle Treks provide a safe way to explore their fragile nests. Never heard of a turtle trek? Don’t fret. Our comprehensive guide provides everything you’ll need to know about our city’s most unique local activities. Before you head out, access our complimentary Travel Guide for all of Fort Lauderdale’s thrills!

Trek Over To Your Guide

What Is a Turtle Trek?

Each year , nearly 2,000 turtle nests can be found along Fort Lauderdale’s coastline. Attend one of the city’s nighttime Turtle Treks and you may see some for yourself! These adventures aren’t solely for entertainment—they’re vital to the turtles’ preservation! Ecologists accompany guests on each journey to ensure that every newly hatched turtle makes its way to the ocean!

What to Bring on Your Trek

  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Dark-colored clothing
  • Rain jacket
  • Light snack
  • Water bottle

What Can I Expect During the Trip ?

A trained guide will lead you to the shoreline (a 1- to 2-mile walk) and present interesting facts along the way. You’ll learn all about the turtles’ habitat and importance to marine ecosystems! Program Volunteers carefully monitor the beach and notify guests when a nest is about to hatch. It’s important to keep all light to a bare minimum . Artificial light can confuse baby turtles after they hatch. Once the newborn turtles hatch, the experts gently guide them toward their permanent home at sea.

Want a chance to see these babies (and their mamas) in the ocean? Plan a Fort Lauderdale boat tour for later in your stay!

Where Do I Get Turtle Trek Tickets?

Florida’s premier turtle conservation group, Sea Turtle Oversight Protection, is a non-profit dedicated to informing the public about the endangered species. Their Turtle Treks of Terramar program is one of the most popular in the area. Fort Lauderdale’s Museum of Discovery and Science offers another option for turtle walkers throughout the months of June and July. Whichever trip you choose, plan for a late evening. Most treks begin around 9 p.m.!

Trending articles, scuba diving - explore new depths in greater fort lauderdale.

Most people know and love Greater Fort Lauderdale for its colorful streets and beautiful beaches, but an equally fascinating world is just waiting to be discovered under the glistening waves. Follow the coast from Hillsboro Beach to Hollywood Beach and you will be amazed by the number of unique dive sites featuring everything from marine life to mermaids, just a stone's throw from the shore.

When it comes to exploring the region's waters, the ways to dive are endless and offer something for everyone under the sun : whether you prefer scuba diving or snorkeling, beach or boat dives, exploring wrecks or reefs, there are endless opportunities for you to explore..Greater Fort Lauderdale is a diver's paradise with the largest collection of warm-water wrecks in the Western world and perfect water temperatures year-round thanks to the Gulf Stream. Read on as we take a deeper dive into some of the most interesting local underwater attractions.

Wrecks, Reefs & More

Pompano beach , the ss copenhagen .

Just 3.3 miles south of the Hillsboro Inlet lies the wreck of the 325-foot SS Copenhagen steamship. After running aground in only 25 feet of water in 1900, it remained visible for years until WWII naval pilots used it for target practice. Her wreckage is scattered over an area of 300 feet, at a depth of 16 to 31 feet, where it serves as a nursery for juvenile reef fish and other marine life. Now a state underwater museum and archeological site, the wreck is a must visit for divers and snorkelers alike.

Mechan H2O and Lady Luck

There are plenty of hidden treasures waiting to be discovered  in Shipwreck Park, an artificial reef featuring 16 wrecks, located one-and-a-half miles offshore from Pompano Beach . The park's well-known centerpiece, a 324-foot tanker called Lady Luck, now has one more major draw: a seven-foot, 500-pound steel robot scuba sculpture named "Mechan H2O'' that was recently submerged to adorn the vessel's stern. After spending a year at the Fisher Family Pier as part of the City's public art program, the sculpture can now be enjoyed 100 feet below sea at one of the most accessible dive sites in the nation.

Mechan H2O

Fort Lauderdale Beach

Fort lauderdale wreck trek - fort lauderdale.

Maximize your dive on the Wreck Trek where, if currents cooperate, you can drift-dive three wrecks on a single tank. Located at a depth of 68-72 feet, the three vessels were sunk as artificial reefs and now host a world of colorful marine life. Start at the Jay Scutti tugboat and follow the rebar stakes north to the Tracy oil rig supply boat. From here, you can continue northeast to the Mercy Jesus and spot southern stingrays, barracuda and other underwater creatures that all call the Wreck Trek home.

Hillsboro Beach

Hillsboro ledges.

Head a mile-and-a-half north of the Hillsboro Inlet and discover a great shallow dive at Hillsboro Ledge. This beautiful reef system runs North-South and ranges in depth from 34 to 40 feet. Divers love its abundant tropical fish and sightings of nurse sharks.

Hallandale Beach

Tenneco towers.

In another lifetime, the Tenneco Towers were oil rig platforms operated by the Tenneco Oil Company in the Gulf of Mexico, but they have since been donated to Broward County and sunk off the shores of Hallandale Beach . As the largest of Greater Fort Lauderdale's 76 artificial reefs, the towers boast spectacular marine life including turtles, tunas and sharks. Advanced open water and deep diver specialists can explore all five of the rigs which range from 60-200 feet in depth.

Hollywood Beach

1000 mermaids artificial reef project .

Conceived by Ocean Rescue Alliance as a way to bring awareness to the problems that affect natural reefs, the 1000 Mermaids Artificial Reef Project is a giant underwater sculpture garden designed to enhance and expand marine habitats. Calling on mermaids as a symbol of human connection to the ocean, the artificial reef features larger than life sculptures that offer a captivating alternative to natural reefs. The eco-art project aims to restore Florida’s living coral reefs while offering ocean adventurers a memorable dive experience.

Dania Beach

Hammerhead reef.

Spanning over 2 miles south from near Port Everglades to Dania Beach Fishing Pier, Hammerhead Reef is an underwater universe of ledges and crannies that lie 60-90 feet below the ocean's surface. As one of the deepest natural coral reef sites in South Florida, some areas climb up to 24' off the sand creating a breathtaking backdrop to an incredible array of marine life.

Green Moray

With so many fantastic dive expeditions to choose from, Greater Fort Lauderdale offers unforgettable experiences both on land and below sea. It's just one of the things that makes the region so unique and the reason so many visitors can't wait to visit our unforgettable beaches time and again.

Reef scuba diving - the sea trek reef encounter.

By Lauren Tjaden

I’ve always wanted to share what SCUBA reef diving in Florida is like with, well, everyone. I want everyone to have the chance to wonder at the fish, in all their vivid glory and shapes and sizes. I want them to see odd plants that are actually animals swaying in their secret rhythms. I want them to be transported by the experience, as I am, to what is literally another world.

But learning to reef dive takes time. It isn’t cheap, either, even if you just do a "Discovery Dive."  Further, all kinds of restrictions exist.

Miami Seaquarium has solved all that with their  Sea Trek Reef Encounter . If you can walk and breathe, you can enjoy Sea Trek.

First, you’ll don a state-of-the-art dive helmet that allows you to breathe freely. Then you’ll descend 15 feet below the surface with your Sea Trek Guide for an underwater walking journey in their 300,000-gallon Coral Reef Tank. You’ll encounter schools of tropical fish, stingrays and more.  Your experience also includes a full day of shows and exhibits at Miami Seaquarium.

It's that easy.

TURTLE TREK Education Walks

sea trek fort lauderdale

What is a Turtle Trek?

Before the trek, during the trek, unpredictable turtles, age requirement, cancellation policy.

Following a presentation about sea turtles, their habitats, and threats they face, participants walk the beach with Sea Turtle Oversight Protection staff.  During the walk, staff will explain how & why nests are protected, about their incubation cycle and what commonly happens to the hatchlings on a densely urbanized beach like Fort Lauderdale.  We’ll discuss hatchling disorientation due to artificial lights, why this occurs and what S.T.O.P is doing to make a difference.

Please note, there is no promise or guarantee that you will see hatchings.  Based on our 2023 permit conditions, the group is not allowed to visit or sit near nests that may hatch.  Our goal is to educate and inspire you during your time with us and ensure a fulfilling experience. If you are fortunate enough to witness these amazing animals, it will be something that you will never forget.

100% of the Turtle Trek proceeds help us fund our rescue operations. Turtle Treks take place in the evenings in August & September.

Before your Turtle Trek, we’ll meet up for an educational presentation at our Headquarters, where you’ll learn about the coastal habitat, the species of turtles that nest on our beaches, their life cycle and the natural and human-caused dangers that affect them. Following this presentation, you will accompany your Trek guide on the beach habitat to begin the Educational Walk .

During the Trek, we’ll continue sharing important facts about the coastal habitat, the importance of sea turtles to the ocean ecosystem and more about challenges these animals face the moment they emerge from their sandy nests.  You’ll see the beach through the eyes of a newborn sea turtle.

The Turtle Trek participant agrees to assume liability of injury from any and all perceivable and unperceivable risks of injury and as to which by using his or her own best judgment for personal safety.

Expect the Unexpected! As with all wild animals, sea turtle movements and behaviors are unpredictable.  They are on their own “turtle time”. Given this fact, there is no guarantee you will see sea turtles on our Treks.

Our goal is to educate and inspire you during your time with us and ensure a fulfilling experience. But if you are fortunate enough to witness these amazing animals, it will be something that you will never forget.

Due to the late hour and nature of the program, it is not recommended for children under 6 years of age.

Pricing is the same, regardless of the age of the participant.  Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Your registration fee is non-refundable, however should you be unable to attend due to unforeseen circumstances, you may use your receipt as a tax-deductible contribution to the organization.

Sea Turtle Oversight Protection is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. As such, your receipt may be used as a tax-deductible contribution to our organization. 100% of your registration fee will help to fund our rescue efforts.

Turtle Treks are held Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights beginning at 8:30 pm. Space is limited to 20 people, so book early!

7 Best Shipwrecks in Fort Lauderdale

' src=

76 Shipwrecks in Fort Lauderdale and counting. Is Fort Lauderdale the shipwreck diving capital of the US? We’ll let you decide.

man holding line on shipwreck

Shipwrecks in Fort Lauderdale

With 76 shipwrecks and counting, it’s hard to argue that Fort Lauderdale isn’t the best wreck diving location in the US. Sure, we often get overlooked by the Spiegel Grove, Vandenberg, and Duane Shipwrecks of the Florida Keys – those wrecks are epic. But that’s it. That’s all the Keys has to offer.

Fort Lauderdale, on the other hand, has shipwrecks similar in size, stature and challenge to the famous wrecks of the Keys – and then some .

Deep wrecks. Shallow wrecks. Penetrable wrecks. And massive wrecks. We have it all.

So come one, come all! There’s a shipwreck ready for every level of diver in South Florida’s premier diving destination !

dive boat fort lauderdale

Why are there so many shipwrecks in Fort Lauderdale?

Since the 80s, Broward County has dedicated resources to preserving the reefs of South Florida. Alas, it may be to save face for the reef destruction from Port Everglades expansion – but that’s neither here nor there.

NOTE : Visit Miami Water Keeper , a nonprofit fighting to save our coral reefs, to learn more about devastating expansion projects and how you can help.

coral reef and marine life in south florida

Either way, Broward County has dropped 150+ artificial reefs including 76 shipwrecks since the 1980s. It’s called the Broward County Artificial Reef Program and it’s provided divers and fishermen some pretty cool sites to visit.

The artificial reefs serve as an attachment site for coral; the coral grows and attracts marine life of all sorts. It’s a win for divers. A win for fishermen. And a win for the underwater world!

7 best shipwrecks in fort lauderdale

Best of the Bunch: Shipwrecks of Fort Lauderdale

Which brings us to the main event: the best shipwreck dives in Fort Lauderdale ! Drum roll please….

7. Ebenezer II

The Ebenezer II is a relatively new shipwreck to the area as it was sunk in 2002. Not very long ago, comparatively speaking to some of the others.

The 95′ freighter sits on its side 70′ below the surface. The top deck features a cargo bay ready for wreck penetration and a main cabin that even the best divers could get lost in. Only enter the wreck if you’ve been trained to do so!

With a cherry on top, the wreck itself backs up to a section of Fort Lauderdale’s third reef . So when you’ve thoroughly explored the wreck, head over to the reef and see what critters you might find ( we’ve hunted lobster and plenty of lionfish over here ).

Best for: Wreck Penetration for Beginners

Coordinates : 26° 00.398′ N 80° 05.589′ W

bow of ebenezer shipwreck in fort lauderdale

6. Robert Edmister

The Robert Edmister dive site isn’t just one wreck, but rather a combo of three. A mini wreck trek of sorts ( more on THE wreck trek of Fort Lauderdale later ).

Although, the main event at this dive site is the Robert Edmister, a former 85′ coast guard cutter. The wreck itself offers limited penetration opportunities but the fun part of this dive site is exploring the two other nearby shipwrecks.

To the north, connected by a line, is the Paul Sherman . To the south, again connected by a line, is the Wendy Rossheim . Three shipwrecks on one dive? Sign me up!

The Wendy Rossheim may be the most famous boat in all of South Florida and most people don’t even know it. For all you James Bond fans out there, the Wendy Rossheim made several appearances as the  Disco Volante , a fictional yacht in the 1965 movie,  Thunderball , starring Sean Connery!

5. The Houseboat

One of two ACTUAL shipwrecks in Fort Lauderdale. Meaning, this bad boy sunk on its own with no help from the Broward County Artificial Reef Program in 1974.

Reef saving venture? Nope. Just some salty sailor who had a bad day.

But hey, who’s complaining today? This wreck is awesome ( although extremely small ). But that’s okay, because you won’t spend much time on the wreck itself anyway.

The surrounding area is gorgeous. High relief patch reefs are waiting to be discovered with fields of a failed environmental project from the 1970s ( a tale of how good intentions are ruined by bad ideas ).

Best for: Wreck and reef combo.

Coordinates : 26° 06.677′ N 80° 03.716′ W

Can you name the other “real” shipwreck in Broward County? Hint, hint : it was sunk off the shore of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea in 1906. Leave your answer in a comment below!

4. Fort Lauderdale Wreck Trek

Three massive shipwrecks, one dive. Impossible, right? Not quite!

The Fort Lauderdale Wreck Trek is a series of three large wrecks: the Jay Scutti , Tracey (Ken Vitale) , and Merci Jesus . Each are unique in their own way except one commonality:

All three were seized by US Customs for smuggling drugs into the country. South Florida isn’t known for the Cocaine Cowboys of the 80s for no reason!

When drifting this site, dive charters will drop you on one wreck ( either the Merci Jesus or Jay Scutti as they’re the northernmost and southernmost, respectively ) depending on current.

From there, you’ll bounce to the Tracey (Ken Vitale) in the middle before drifting over the final shipwreck! Each wreck is separated by merely 200 feet so bouncing from wreck to wreck is much easier than you think!

Good for : epic drift diving!

Coordinates :

Jay Scutti: 26° 09.520′ N 80° 04.760′ W Tracey: 26° 09.559′ N 80° 04.763′ W Merci Jesus: 26 09.635′ N 80 04.747′ W

3. Hog Heaven

A beacon of successful artificial reefs in Fort Lauderdale. Hog Heaven is a dumping ground of recycled steel and twisted metal. And I mean that in the best way possible.

This dive site is booming with life after a series of successful artificial reef deployments. Two barges, airplane wings, an old lighthouse, pontoons, pipes and mine carts to name a few.

However, the main event is the 180′ barge known as Hog Heaven. The massive shipwreck flipped over as it fluttered to the ocean floor back in 1986. Today, walls are torn off exposing swim throughs, penetration sites, and enough square foot for divers to spend every day here without getting bored.

Nearby you can find the two next largest structures: the Pacific Reef Lighthouse ( now known as the Jungle Gym ) and another barge named the Wayne. All of which provide a seemingly endless supply of marine life for you to enjoy!

Best for : New and advanced divers, big groups, and endless exploration!

Coordinates : 26 08.102′ N 80 04.786′ W

hog heaven shipwreck in Fort Lauderdale

2. Mercedes

The Mercedes was close to being a true shipwreck. But instead of the sandy bottom of South Florida, it washed ashore on the sandy shores of Palm Beach. Yikes!

Abandoned during a storm back in 1984, the 190′ German freighter just so happened to wash ashore behind famous socialite, Mollie Wilmot’s Palm Beach home. The story became national news.

The ship was set to sink after Broward County purchased the boat following its removal from Palm Beach. On March 30, 1985, the boat was loaded with explosives and sent to Davy Jones’ Locker just off the shore of Fort Lauderdale in a very public event.

Since then, Hurricane Andrew and others have done no favors to the wreck. It’s been battered, bruised, split into two, and shifted entirely to a different location 90′ below the surface. It rests today in the middle of third reef in a graveyard of twisted metal but remains one of the most popular dive sites in Fort Lauderdale!

Best for : Deep diving, lionfish hunting and a reef/wreck combo!

Coordinates : 26 09.370′ N 80 04.513′ W

1. Tenneco Towers

The granddaddy of them all. Tenneco Towers is the most searched dive site in South Florida ( according to my own research ) and it’s not even close. And for good reason. This dive site is THAT epic.

South Florida’s largest artificial reef, Tenneco Towers is actually a series of five different oil rig platforms donated by the Tenneco Oil Company in 1985. Once in the Gulf of Mexico pumping oil from the ground, this structure now serves as the best shipwreck ( of sorts ) in all of South Florida.

Dive operators make frequent trips here to explore the shallow platforms which plunge down to nearly 110′ and extend upward to 70′. Just keep an eye out for the bull sharks and lemon sharks who keep a safe distance not too far away!

Best for: deep diving and astonishment!

Coordinates : N 25 58.901 W 80 04.799

ENVIRONMENTAL NOTE

Old oil rig platforms are commonly deployed as artificial reefs in the USA. It’s a part of the federal government’s “Rigs-to-Reefs Program” which enable decommissioned rigs to be donated. This gives the oil companies a massive tax write off while sending some environmental groups into fits.

What do you think? Should oil companies be incentivized to create artificial reefs as a tax write off? Leave a comment below!

Turtle Treks Return to Fort Lauderdale Beach

The natural phenomenon of marine turtle nesting has once again arrived on Greater Fort Lauderdale's 23 miles of moonlit Blue Wave beaches. Each year almost 2,000 turtle nests are deposited along the beach, resulting in as many as 150,000 hatchlings making their way to the ocean.

Sea turtle season, which began in March and ends in October, is also ripe with opportunity to witness the brave little hatchlings making their late-night trek to the Atlantic. And for those who want to participate in the magical moment, there are several programs designed to educate participants about sea turtles and help them witness turtle nesting firsthand. Spaces fill quickly, so make reservations as soon as possible.

sea trek fort lauderdale

Turtle Treks of Terramar , hosted by Sea Turtle Oversight Protection, meet at 3104 NE Ninth St., near Sunrise Boulevard and A1A in Fort Lauderdale on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights June 16 through Aug. 27.

The adventure begins when you hit the sand with Sea Turtle Oversight Protection staff after a brief presentation. You will have a rare opportunity to possibly witness newborn sea turtles emerging from a nest, while seeing the threats they face and observing our trained staff rescuing turtles that mistakenly scurry to the bright city lights. After all are safely recovered, celebrate their release at the ocean’s edge as these ancient mariners get another chance to continue their epic journey of survival.

Turtle Treks take place in evenings during peak sea turtle nesting season (June- September). 100% of the Turtle Trek proceeds help fund rescue operations. http://seaturtleop.com/index.php/turtle-walk . Contact Siouxzen Whitecloud (954) 404-0025 or [email protected] for more info.

FACT: Terramar means “from land to sea,” which is the direction sea turtle hatchlings should go once they emerge from their sandy nests.

The Museum of Discovery and Science invites families to participate in an exciting evening of sea turtle discovery and wonder! The annual evening Turtle Walks occur in June and July 2018. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about sea turtle nesting and nature permitting, observe a loggerhead sea turtle lay her eggs and then head out to sea.

At 9:00 p.m., the Turtle Walk adventure begins at the Museum of Discovery and Science with an informative presentation by Museum staff about the plight of sea turtles. Guest will then meet at the beach where Museum expert guides will scout the beach looking for nesting sea turtles. Once a turtle is found and has begun the egg-laying process, guests will be led down the beach to witness this unforgettable experience. Please note: nesting is not dependent upon weather, tides, or moon phases, and we cannot guarantee a nesting event each time.

The journey continues to Fort Lauderdale beach where Museum expert guides lead guests to the sea turtle’s nesting grounds to look for amazing sea turtles. While we cannot guarantee a sea turtle will be spotted on every walk, when it does happen, it is a natural wonder that no one will ever forget.

The loggerhead (scientific name Caretta caretta) is the most abundant sea turtle nesting in Florida. The loggerhead sea turtle, whose name refers to its large head, can weigh up to 400 pounds and has a life span of approximately 30-60 years. Loggerheads are a protected species and can be found in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans as well as the Mediterranean Sea. They spend most of their life in saltwater and estuarine habitats, with females briefly coming ashore to lay eggs. The loggerhead sea turtle has a low reproductive rate; females lay an average of four egg clutches and then become quiescent, producing no eggs for two to three years. A female loggerhead sea turtle may travel thousands of miles to return to the area where she hatched as a baby to lay her own eggs as an adult.

Guests should be prepared to walk approximately one to two miles, and provide their own transportation and snacks. Participants must be 9 years of age or older. White lights and flashes are not permitted on the beach. Advance reservations are required as space is limited. Please call 954.713.0930 to make reservations or purchase online at: https://turtlewalks2018.brownpapertickets.com Prices are $19 for members and $21 for non-members.
