Where to go shopping in Rome
1. Monti
If you’re going to start anywhere with your shopping, start here, in Monti. This is the place for strolling through cobbled streets, and dipping into vintage shops and little boutiques. One of the hippest neighborhoods in the city, Monti is filled with independent clothing brands, interior decor shops and quaint, Instagrammable eateries. Pulp Vintage, Humana, Pifebo and Blue Goose are all popular spots for one-of-a-kind vintage pieces. Stroll down Via del Boschetto to shop for sartorial styles at Kokoro, global furnishings at Estremi and leather handbags at Sufir. This is the best place to nab a few bits from up-and-coming fashion designers no one has heard of back home.
2. Spanish Steps
If you think that your trip to Rome simply won’t be complete without splurging on a real Fendi purse, a bauble from Gucci or a wallet from Prada, look no further than the swanky streets fanning out from Piazza di Spagna, or the Spanish Steps. A dizzying amount of credit card debt gets run up on Via Condotti, Via Borgognona, Via del Babuino and Via Frattina because the big players are all here. From Bulgari and Max Mara to Ferragmo and Zegna, the choices are limitless. You'll also find a few local brands squeezed in here, like Il Bisonte which sells leather goods, and plenty of eyeglass shops and perfume boutiques as well. Popular international stores like COS and & Other Stories are located nearby on Via Borgognona.
3. Via del Governo Vecchio
This pretty street weaves through the Centro Storico, right near Piazza Navona. There are some one-off boutiques and jewellery stores, but the real draws are the vintage finds: several of Rome’s best resale shops are a few doors down from one another. As you leave Piazza Navona, head into Piazza di Pasquino to begin your stroll down this street. Kolby and Wools Boutique sell contemporary menswear, while Silvia and Arlette focus on womenswear. A few of Rome's most popular eateries are located on this street as well for a perfect lunch pause: enjoy thin-crust Roman pizzas at Da Baffetto or classic pastas at Da Tonino.
4. Via dei Coronari
Once upon a time, it was the tradition in Rome – and most everywhere in Italy – for similar stores, studios, and vendors to be clustered on one street. The tradition still holds on Via dei Coronari, a street lined with antique dealers. It’s the place to go for vintage prints and maps, the odd antique Roman bust (or a still-quite-old reproduction), a little piece of estate jewellery or a Biedermeier bedroom set to ship home. A few favorite spots include Essenzialmente Laura for artisanal perfumes, Marta Ray for buttery soft leather ballet flats and handbags, and Lisa Corti for colourful textiles.
5. Via del Corso
The name-brand storefronts along Via del Corso include the usual global logos like H&M, Zara and Gap alongside well-known Italian brands like Benetton, Kiko and Intimissimi. This isn’t the best place for a made-in-Rome souvenir, but if you need a pair of jeans, new shoes or just want to shop familiar names, you’ll find them here. If you need assistance with your digital device, be sure to pop into the new Apple store which recently opened in a grand 19th century featuring vaulted ceilings, frescoes and marbled staircases.
6. La Rinascente
La Rinascente, Italy’s iconic department store, has sold luxury goods, fashion and accessories since 1865. It has two locations in Rome: one in Piazza Fiume (near Villa Borghese) and a more central location along Via del Tritone (a stone’s throw from the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps). You’ll find international designer brands, local artisans, cosmetics, home design, dining and more. La Rinascente isn’t just a shopping destination: it’s a cultural hub where modernity means Italian heritage. At the location on Via del Tritone, you should head below ground to floor -1 to see remnants of the ancient Aqua Virgo aqueduct that dates back to 19BC, and head upstairs to Maio Restaurant & Rooftop for mesmerizing views of the city skyline.
7. Via dell’Oca
A tiny bijoux street tucked away behind Piazza del Popolo, Via dell’Oca has some of Italy's most coveted contemporary artisans and upscale designer boutiques in Rome. You'll find Lucia Odescalchi's avant-garde jewellery atelier next to Patrizia Fabri's dreamy hat workshop which sells dozens of styles for every season and occasion. Hip clothing boutiques include Artisanal Cornucopia, Laura Urbinati and Atelier Bomba — all household names with in-the-know locals. Eau d'Italie, a fragrance brand launched by Le Sirenuse in Positano, also has a shopfront here.
8. Trastevere
The jumble of streets wedged between Via Garibaldi and Viale Trastevere holds a real treasure trove of one-of-a-kind stores selling gifts, shoes, clothes and oddities. And getting lost during the treasure hunt is half the fun. Don’t miss RomaStore Profumi for custom-made fragrances and Polvere di Tempo for antique watches, clocks, sundials, globes and maps. This area is best in the later afternoon when you can hit a cosy bar for an aperitivo after your shopping spree.
9. Via della Scrofa
One of the prettiest streets in Rome, Via della Scrofa has a great mix of dining options, furniture stores and chic boutiques. This is a top area to shop for your pals back home (or just yourself). Container16 Rome is the place to pick up funky kitchen tools, tableware and food books for the gastronomes in your life; Co.Ro. Jewels sells thoughtful jewellery designs inspired by the architecture of Rome; Sirni produces quality leather goods you'll use for decades to come, and Spazioespanso stocks original fashion and accessories for women.
10. Via dei Giubbonari
Once upon a time, Campo de’ Fiori was lined with funky shops selling handmade shoes, handbags and clothes. Now, it’s all about wall-to-wall restaurants. Nearby, Via dei Giubbonari is still suitably weird, though most of its small storefronts sell clothes and shoes that are more made-in-China than made-in-Italy. Still, prices are low, and you can say you bought it in Italy…
11. Termini Station
A busy train station may not seem like the most obvious or appealing place to shop, but Termini Station is a much nicer place to visit than it used to be. Head to the lower level for Sephora and Desigual or the platform level for Victoria’s Secret, COIN and others. There’s a decent food court on the upper level, and the fabulous Mercato Centrale street food hall is found by the station’s south side.
12. Via del Corso
The personality of Corso changes as you head north from Piazza Venezia: cheap souvenir shops hawking €10 T-shirts give way to stores the likes of Gap and Lush, and then to higher-end storefronts as you get closer to the Spanish Steps. Don’t expect too many surprises here, but do get ready for crowds, especially on the weekends and during high tourist season.
13. Castel Romano Designer Outlet
If outlet shopping is your thing, then it might be worth it to haul out to the hinterlands, where more than 150 medium- to high-end designer outlet stores await. If you go during July and August or January and February, you will catch Italy’s famed seasonal sales, with deep discounts on what might otherwise be very expensive wares. The outlet runs a shuttle bus from Termini Station for €15 round-trip.
14. La Rinascente
Set behind the façade of a stately palazzo near the Trevi Fountain, this luxury department store is all sleek and modern. Shopaholics who want to spend a lot of money in one place need look no further, as La Rinascente offers five floors filled with high-end women’s and men’s fashions, housewares and cosmetics, plus a 6th-floor food court with swoony views of the Rome skyline. Type in Via del Tritone 61 on your GPS and get shopping.
15. Eataly
We think of Eataly as a bit of an 800-pound gorilla in Rome’s food shopping scene but, still, there’s no denying that this megastore for all things edible and made-in-Italy is simply dazzling. Set in the old Ostiense Railway Station, Eataly’s largest outlet offers multiple floors of high-quality, carefully-sourced Italian specialities (who knew there were that many kinds of parmigiano ?), plus multiple restaurants, cooking classes and tasting opportunities.

Claudio was a very excellent and kind host who paid attention to my unique needs. He took me to boutiques that I never would have found by myself, helped me find pieces that work for me and gave advice for my style. We paused for beverages and for beautiful vistas of Rome. The pace was very good for me and we took care of everything on my list: gifts for family, something for the home, and many lovely things for me. I am not a great shopper. Prior to my afternoon with Claudio, I was not finding the kinds of shops that suited me. He gave me advice for any further shopping if I need it.
Claudio was a wonderful host who took me to the exact types of boutiques that I wanted. We covered everything on my list in shops I never would have found on my own. We paused for history and beautiful vistas while keeping a pace that was good for me. Claudio gave me good clothing advice and helped find sizes for me.
Our family took a Christmas Day tour around Rome with Andrea and had a wonderful time. Andrea was wonderfully friendly and highlighted points of interest that we would have certainly missed exploring on our own. She also helped us understand the history and context to better appreciate the beautiful city of Rome and many historical sites.

Our guide Alessandra was very attentive to our preferences and came very well prepared to take us on a shopping tour that was exactly what we were looking for, and she also found us a lot of sales with good discounts on very nice things. Her personality was very friendly and engaging! I highly recommend Alassandra.

How to plan a family city break in Rome
Visiting the Italian capital brings history vividly to life, and you can sightsee simply by strolling, with regular reviving pizza, pasta and ice-cream stops.
Rome, a place of mythology, gladiators and ice-cream, has an unparalleled hold on the imagination. The city centre feels like an open air museum, the gloriously intact Colosseum rising up at its ancient heart, and with millennia-old ruins and dazzling baroque at every turn.
Central Rome is fairly walkable, so stay centrally or somewhere with easy access to the centre by metro or bus and it’s easy to explore, hopping on the occasional metro or bus for longer journeys. Rather than specifically family-friendly sights, in Rome a family trip could encompass epic Roman ruins, chances to tell a lie at the Mouth of Truth, or cycling around the bucolic Villa Borghese park. Another plus is that Italians love children, and babies, especially, will get a fuss made of them wherever they go.
What to do in Rome with kids
Toddlers: The Palatine encompasses the imperial ruins of ancient palaces, but more importantly, lovely gardens in which toddlers can run around and play; pack a picnic to take it easy and enjoy the greenery. What’s more, the Palatine is covered in the same ticket as the Roman Forum and Colosseum, with splendid ruins, and stories of emperors, gladiators and wild animals to inspire your small companions.
The Explora Museum has a central water mechanism where toddlers can get busy moving water from one place to another and getting the machine to work. They can also play at being grown ups, with small shopping trolleys, post office counters, and grocery shopping. There’s a good playground outside (a rarity in Rome), with a zipline.
Rome’s piazzas are ideal for young children, giving the freedom to run and roam. Piazza Navona has impressive fountains, street artists and performers such as living statues. There are also the elaborate displays of Al Sogno toyshop, and Città del Sole toy store nearby, the latter with lots of wholesome wooden toys.
Children under 10: The Colosseum looms large on the landscape of any trip to Rome, and younger kids will find the evocation of gladiatorial combat, imperial power and wild beasts irresistible. Opt for a family guided tour to bring the ancient auditorium to life. Afterwards, wander up nearby Aventino hill for a view through its mysterious peephole.
Rome’s historic centre includes the chance to gaze upwards at the Pantheon’s oculus and toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain. Try some hands-on Leonardo inventions at Museum Leonardo Da Vinci Experience . Have a marble sign engraved at Via Margutta’s Il Marmoraro, and get your hand (possibly) bitten off at the Mouth of Truth.
The ancient Roman road, the Via Appia, has a preserved stretch running southwards through emerald countryside and lined by Roman ruins. You can bike it, with bike hire at the Visitor Information Centre . Nearby, Rome Gladiator School runs gladiatorial training sessions, ideal for kids who love a bit of mortal combat.
Tweens and teenagers: Colosseum night tours are a thrillingly different way to explore the amphitheatre. Take a tour that visits the building’s underground sections where the wild beasts were kept, as well as the seeing the arena by moonlight, an atmospheric way to see where the deadly entertainment took place.
Villa Borghese , Rome’s most beautiful park, has Surrey (four-person), regular, or e-bikes, so you can explore the park with its boating lake. Check out viewpoints that offer a backdrop of Roman rooftops, such as at Pincio Hill, or a short walk away, photogenic anoramas from the top of the Spanish Steps, the city’s rococo outdoor staircase.
The Vatican & St Peter’s have days worth of riches to explore, and even the surliest teen will be (secretly) impressed by the glories of the Sistine Chapel. Take a teen-oriented tour of the highlights to avoid museum fatigue and queues. Climb the dome of St Peter’s for a soaring view down over its piazza and beyond.
Where to eat in Rome with kids
Toddlers: A wonder of Rome is that children are welcomed with benevolent smiles, while babies are treated like mini-celebrities. Mezza (half) portions are offered rather than children’s menus. If you don’t fancy a sit-down meal, pick up some of the world’s best takeaway pizza from Forno di Campo di Fiori. For a more leisurely meal, there are hundreds of options, such as lively Pizzeria alle Carrette , in Monti, convenient for the Colosseum, where there are plenty of pasta dishes available as well as pizza.
Children under 10: Local trattorias have appealing menus of pasta dishes and are lively and welcoming: look out for places such as Da Tonino , with big pasta portions on gingham tablecloths close to Piazza Navona. La Polpetta is likely to appeal as it has pasta and pizza, and serves up a cornucopia of different meatballs and other fried things (‘polpetta’ means ‘meatball’); there are several branches, most conveniently in Trastevere and Monti.
Tweens and teenagers: The best place in Rome for street food and Roman foodie culture is the covered food market in Testaccio, full of food and market stalls. Here you can get offal-rich Roman sandwiches at Mordi e Vai and pizza al taglio (by the slice) with unusual toppings (such as fennel, orange and olives) at Casa Manco. The lively streets of Trastevere are popular for an evening stroll, and there are lots of choices, including Trattoria Oste Nostro , on a cobbled backstreet, with enough insouciant cool and delicious pasta dishes to appeal to t(w)eens.
Where to stay in Rome with kids
Toddlers: With toddlers, make life easier for yourself and stay somewhere central, so you don’t have to travel far to explore. Albergo del Senato has baroquely decorated family rooms, a roof terrace, and overlooks the heart of the action of the Pantheon square. You can’t get much more central than Navona 49 , on Piazza Navona, which offers apartments with kitchen facilities - ideal when you’re travelling with little ones.
Children under 10: For a peaceful vibe, yet still not far from the centre, check into the Aventino neighbourhood. This is a hill neighbourhood of ivy-cloaked ochre villas and peaceful streets, plus the Orange Garden, with big views over the city, You can stay at the gracious Hotel Via San Pio , which has family rooms that sleep up to four. Nearby, and not far from the Colosseum, Apartment Nido all’Aventino offers several smart apartments, with a sun terrace.
Tweens and teenagers: This age range will relish being in the heart of the action. A good area is Tridente, close to Piazza del Popolo, the Spanish Steps, and designer and mid-market shopping. Stay at the swish Babuino 181 where there’s a rooftop with a view, or opt for an apartment, such as Margutta Terrace Apartment , which is tucked away on an historic and gallery-lined cobbled street, opening onto a courtyard.
