I am very positively surprised by the organization. The drivers were always super punctual. Good hotels in the best location (old town)! Competent guides. Thanks to Odil. ***** stars

Central Asia Combined Silk Road Tour Tour

Central Asia Combined Silk Road Tour

An amazing and fascinating experience - 6 stars out of five. Small group tour. Helpful and interesting guides who each knew their area well and were fascinating to talk to, across a wide range of natural beauty, spectacular monuments and interesting history. Organisation was spot on, hotels largely excellent, comfortable vehicles even on desert roads in Turkmenistan. Spectacularly good three weeks and cannot recommend highly enough.

Bishkek To Bishkek (16 Days)

Kyrgyzstan as a destination was absolutely incredible, stunning scenery, warm and welcoming people and a really wonderful place to enjoy hiking, horse riding and loads of outdoor activities, absolutely loved the place. As it is an emerging travel destination I'd encourage anyone to get there NOW before it becomes more crowded!! The tour itself was....fine. It ticked all the boxes on the itinerary, but I don't feel that Oasis Overland went above or beyond in anyway and overall the focus was on the overlanding side of things with virtually no local experiences or cultural knowledge provided. The crew we had were very very experienced in travelling overland style, so the meals provided and efficiency of setting up camp and getting out of tricky situations (like a bogged truck) was very good - but overall I found the tour lacking in cultural experiences. Any info about the country we were travelling in we had to dig out for ourselves, and as there are minimal homestays and interactions with locals we came away with no deeper understanding of the destination or the Kyrgyz people, which for me was very, very disappointing. If you love overlanding travel style and bush camping this trip is ideal - Oasis execute an overlanding trip well (though be prepared for long dusty drive days). The free camps we stayed at were beautiful, but unfortunately the infrastructure in Kyrgyzstan is not yet developed enough to handle the trash created by other travellers so camp sites can be a bit messy. Also most places you stay like Ala Archa, Lake Song Kol and the optional trip to Altyn Arashan it is REALLY COLD even in August, we had ski jackets and sleeping bags that handled -20 degrees and were still freezing so pack layers!!! Ultimately, I'm glad we got to experience Kyrgyzstan but will be returning on a seperate trip as I don't feel this tour really delved into the culture at all. We had an adventurous time overlanding but were left feeling that the tour lacked any insights to the country and at times was a bit too fast moving - we would drive for hours, only to spend 50 minutes at an historical site. So, definitely go to Kyrgyzstan but if you book this tour make sure you know what you are in for with the overlanding travel style!

Tailor-Made China Adventure to the Silk Road with Daily Departure Tour

Tailor-Made China Adventure to the Silk Road with Daily Departure

Overall arrangement is quite smooth and flexible to adjust if need be. Guide is very knowledgeable to share with us the history and makes the journey a lot more interesting. I am a pescatarian-there’s one dinner they specially make me special dumpling according to my diet. For internal flight , plane didn’t prepare my food (seafood/vegetarian) - not sure if the airline company don’t have such arrangement or travel company forgot to inform.

What people love about Silk Road Tours

Javlon and Shaxnoza were great english speaking guides. Enjoyed all the historic sites and had excellent accommodations while staying in Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva. A suggestion for future tours is to provide an option when visiting Samarkand and Bukhara- instead of 2 days in each places, each places can be viewed in a day. We had lot of free time and besides walking nearby the hotel there was not much more to explore in these cities. Thanks Odil for your team in providing a wonderful experience
With a guided tour, you can not control the weather or your travelling companions. I was lucky with both, so that helped! That aside, on my tour through the 5 Stans there were so many things that could have gone wrong. There were the 3 weeks in hotels, the three internal flights and the guides for each leg of the journey. It has to be said that all of this was well managed by Steppe Travels. The communication was great, the hotels were better than expected and all the guides were excellent. There were some long days of travelling, but the itinerary was well thought through and everything worked well. Overall, it was a great trip and Steppe Travel met all my requirements. I recommend them.

Silk Road Tours FAQs

Highlights along the Silk Road route are listed as below. Please inquire if you have any questions and our professtional travel consultant will reply within 1 working day.

The best time to travel is from May to October. Weather conditions are pleasant from late spring to early autumn, with an average temperature of 15 °C. Although summer weather can be scorching, the heat is dry and more comfortable than in the humid tropics. The scenery is ideal when the fruits ripen, the flowers are in full bloom, and green grass covers grassland areas.

Bring warm clothing even in the hot summer, as the temperature can change greatly between day and night in some places along the route.

Bring shoes suitable for walking.

Use sunscreen, sunglasses, and lip creams to protect your eyes and skin from the sun. Also consider bringing a moisturizer because the air is very dry in the desert areas.

Bring some medicine for diarrhea and heat stroke.

When visiting religious sites such as mosques, women should wear long–sleeve clothes. At certain times women are not allowed to enter mosques. Taking photos at some attractions is forbidden; please follow your tour guide's lead. When you shop at the market, bargaining is taboo if you do not intend to make the purchase.

What countries are on the Silk Road?

The Silk Road was originally an expansive region that covered Asia, Europe, the Middle East and parts of the Pacific. In modern times, the  World Tourism Organization  (UNWTO) classifies the Silk Road region as 34 countries.

While many of these countries retain remnants of the Silk Road era, we have highlighted several of the destinations that showcase this incredible history within our Silk Road tours. We are currently running Silk Road trips in Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. The following FAQ answers are related to these countries.

What is the weather like in the Silk Road region?

In the Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan sections of the Silk Road, the weather is categorised as typically between moderate to arid continental. This means summers are hot and sunny, with winters between cold and freezing. There can be extreme temperatures in these seasons, with highs getting to 50ºC, typically in the desert regions and winter lows of -20ºC. There's also snow in the mountain regions. This region can also get sudden cold spells, heatwaves and intense winds, causing sand and dust storms.

When is the best time to visit the Silk Road region?

The best time to visit the Silk Road for travel within Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan is from April to October, as the rainiest time of year typically falls from October to April. The shoulder months of March and November are also good times to visit as there shouldn't be as cold or get as much rain as in the winter months. It can get very hot from June to August, so if you'd prefer a more mild visit, visit in the spring and autumn seasons.

Do I need a visa to travel to the Silk Road region?

If you are travelling to countries in the Silk Road region, you should ensure you have checked the entry requirements for each destination you are visiting. Currently, in the countries we run trips in, a visa is required for entry into Turkmenistan.

Many nationalities are able to enter and travel within Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan for up to 30 days without a visa. This is extended to 60 days in Kyrgyzstan.

See visa travel advice for travellers from  Australia , the  United States , the  United Kingdom ,  Canada  and  New Zealand .

The page is for general information only and may be subject to change. It is your responsibility to obtain relevant visa and travel information required for entry, departure and travel to each country or region you visit on your trip. You should confirm these with the relevant embassies and/or consulates.

Is tipping customary in the Silk Road region?

Tipping isn't universally done across the Silk Road region, however, it is becoming more popular in certain areas. In Kazakhstan, a service charge of 10% is typically included in bills, whereas in Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, a tip of about 5-10% is welcome. Tippnig is not customary in Turkemenistan.

What is the internet access like in the Silk Road region?

Internet in countries throughout the Silk Road is typically accessible in cities and large towns. You can generally find internet in hotels and restaurants as well as in internet cafes. When outside of these major hubs, internet can range from reduced to non-existent.

In Turkmenistan, many sites, including social media, are blocked by the authorities.

Can I use my mobile phone while in the Silk Road region?

Similar to internet use, mobile phone access in the Silk Road region is typically good in cities and main towns. There can be limitations on using your device and home carrier, depending on the country you are travelling in and your provider. You may be able to purchase a local SIM card while abroad in this area. However, if you are planning on using global roaming, ensure it is turned on prior to leaving your home country.

What are the toilets like in the Silk Road region?

Toilets throughout the Silk Road area can vary from modern flushable toilets to outside drop toilets. Some areas in this region may not sanitise toilet facilities to the same standards as in Western countries and there may not always be hot water available.

Because there is so much variation, especially between the cities and remote areas, it is generally advised that you bring your own toilet paper, sanitiser and soap while travelling.

Can I drink the water in the Silk Road region?

Travellers are advised not to drink tap water in Central Asia and while in the Silk Road regions. It is also a good idea to be careful when eating salads and other uncooked foods that may have been washed in water. Similarly, avoid ice, peel fruit before eating and ask for filtered water to be used for tea.

Are credit cards and ATMs widely accepted in the Silk Road region?

Credit cards are usually accepted in business in the major cities and hubs of this region of the Silk Road. Outside of cities, credit cards aren't typically used and you will need small local currency. You may find that foreign cards aren't as accepted, especially in Uzbekistan, so it's advised that you have enough cash to cover your daily expenses.

Similarly, ATMs are usually commonly found in cities and large towns and not so much in rural regions.

Is the Silk Road safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

Discretion is advised for LGBTQI+ travellers in this region of the Silk Road. In Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, same-sex relations are illegal and can incur prison sentences of up to two years. While in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, homosexuality is legal, however, attitudes are not accepting, especially outside of major cities. In this area of Asia, displays of affection between heterosexual couples are generally frowned upon and can even offend, so it is advised for all travellers to take care not to engage in any public displays of affection.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.

If you are travelling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at the time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travellers who do not wish to share a room.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before travelling?

Absolutely. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

For more information on insurance, please go to: Travel Insurance

How do I stay safe and healthy while travelling?

Intrepid takes the health and safety of its travellers seriously and takes every measure to ensure that trips are safe, fun and enjoyable for everyone. We recommend that all travellers check with their government or national travel advisory organisation for the latest information before departure:

The Silk Road Tours & Travel

The Silk Road Attractions & Landmarks Guide

The silk road in china.

The three main fabled Silk Road routes first gained importance during the early Han Dynasty (206 BC-220 AD), as traders began the westward journey from the ancient Chinese capital of  Chang'an (present day Xi'an).

The Silk Road then lasted as a major trading thoroughfare for some 1,600 years, until the collapse of the Yuan Dynasty that had been established by Kublai Khan in the 14th century.

While the name was derived from the lucrative trade in Chinese silk which was highly prized by people in the west, many other goods flowed in both directions.  From China came tea, porcelain, lacquer ware, jade, bronze objects and iron.  The camel caravans returning from the West carried fruit and seeds, glass bottles, gold, ivory, and carpets and other woven items.

Culturally, the Silk Road spread Buddhism to western China and centuries later helped spread Islam throughout central  Asia .

Today’s Travelers

Travelers who follow the legendary route through China today are introduced to parts of the country that are far different from the attractions of major cities like Beijing and Shanghai, and from people who for the most part share the same ethnic background.

While about 93 percent of Chinese belong to the Han ethnic group, most of the rest are members of 56 separate minorities. The western region of China through which the Silk Road passes (Xinjiang Province) is home to 13 of them, and introductions to their lifestyles can be a high point of a visit there.

The path of the Silk Road leads to and through small oasis towns and villages and crosses rolling grasslands and sparsely inhabited sun-baked deserts punctuated by high mountains.  Today’s travelers find themselves in a world of onion-domed mosques, bazaars, embroidered caps and languages far different from Mandarin or Cantonese.

The Uyghur (pronounced wee-grr) minority group is the largest in western China.  It consists of mostly Sunni Muslim Turkic-speaking people.

Xi’an (formerly Chang’an) was the capital of China for nearly 1,200 years, and is the burial place of Emperor Qin Shi Huang (259-210 BC).  His mausoleum, which took 38 years to complete, is home to a virtual army of more than 7,000 terra cotta warriors, along with horses, chariots and weapons, which were buried to accompany the emperor and guard him in the next life.

Arranged in battle formations much as the imperial guard would be during the ruler's lifetime, this vast underground army represents one of the most significant archeological finds of modern times.

In 2014, the Chang’an-Tianshan corridor of the Silk Road was designated as a World Heritage Site.

Other Attractions in Xi’an

The collections at the Provincial History Museum are as beautiful as they are intriguing.  Fragments of silk from the Han Dynasty serve as reminders of how the trade route got its name.  Gold, silver and bronze artifacts represent items that were carried back to China from the west.

Of special interest are black-faced figures that demonstrate early contact with the African continent.

More Sights along China’s Silk Road

The Mogao Caves near Dunhuang, which were dug into limestone cliffs over a period of 1,000 years beginning in 366 AD, contain one of the most outstanding collections of Buddhist art in the world.

Despite its location in a stretch of barren terrain, Turpan (also known as Turfan) is known for an underground irrigation system built 20 centuries ago that provided water for growing grain, cotton, grapes and Hami melons, which still are prized for their fragrance and flavor.

In Kashgar, tucked into the extreme western end of China, colorful bazaars serve as reminders of its past as a transportation and trading center.  As they have for many centuries, weekly markets still teem with people selling and buying everything from sheep and donkeys to barbequed meat and steamed dumplings.

Beyond China

The Silk Road actually developed into many routes, including northern routes that passed through several of the “Stans” – most notably Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan -- and some southern routes that passed through Pakistan, Afghanistan,  India , the Caucuses, and Arabia.

The major northern route includes the legendary Uzbek cities of Samarkand, Bukhara and Tashkent. Deserts, caves replete with Buddhist art, ancient villages and streets, mosques and madrasahs mark the route.

Adventurous travelers may continue through Iran into  Turkey , which leads to  Europe  and the western end of the route.

Silk Road Tours

Silk Road Tours

Follow in the footsteps of merchants on the Great Silk Road as they travelled from China to Europe across mountain passes and vast steppes. Experience the highlights of China (Xinjiang), Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Armenia as you travel from east to west as you explore ancient trades that are still practiced today. Just as they did centuries ago, master-craftsmen still produce feather-light silk, bazaars still smell of spices, and chefs still cook the tastiest of foods.

Some of our Silk Road tours start in the Chinese cities of Urumqi or Kashgar, where caravans would stop as they crossed the Taklamakan Desert. Then they cross into Kyrgyzstan over the Torugart Pass, to arrive in Osh, a city built around its 2,000-year-old bazaar. Alternatively, start from the steppes of Kazakhstan, and then stop by the mountains of Kyrgyzstan on the way to Uzbekistan’s grand cities. Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva have long been the stuff of legend, but even today these cities live up to all expectations. Though many merchants just passed through them while travelling along the Silk Road, these cities (plus Merv and Kunya-Urgench in Turkmenistan) were centres of education and scholarly work, which can still be seen at the elaborate and intricate madrassahs and mosques. On the other side of the Caspian Sea is the Caucasus, the gateway to Europe. Visit the ancient cities of Baku and Ganja in Azerbaijan, before continuing to Georgia and Armenia, the two oldest Christian countries in the world. The Silk Road crossed Svaneti in Georgia and led to the Caspian Sea via ancient cities like Poti, which was once a bustling market town and port. See the rough stone caravanserais in Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan, monumental architecture in Uzbekistan’s ancient Silk Road cities, sandswept ruins in Turkmenistan, and the sunny vineyards of Georgia.

Based on our many years of experience in the region, working with local tour operators, restaurants, and, of course, our favourite places, we’ve developed a range of fascinating, well-organised Silk Road tours and holiday packages. Our small group tours are the best way to make the most of a short amount of time, share costs, and meet travellers who are just as excited as you are. Our private tours and tailor-made travel packages allow you to do exactly what you want, when. Join us on the journey of a lifetime along the Great Silk Road!

Ancient Silk Road Routes

The route of the land silk road takes Chang'an (now called Xi’an ) in the Western Han Dynasty as the starting point of the whole route, passes through the Hexi Corridor , and then reaches the famous Dunhuang . However, from Dunhuang , it is divided into two routes: the two routes start from Dunhuang, bypassing the Taklamakan Desert and Lop Nur northward and southward, finally rejoin at the terminal Rome .

It is an important commercial and trade channel connecting the hinterland of China and, Asian and European countries. It is the formation of this channel that made an important contribution to the earliest international trades. Now the silk road has become a world heritage site.

World Silk Road Route

Stretching about 4,000 miles (6,437 kilometers), the Silk Road started from the ancient great China capital city Chang’an(today’s Xi’an), and later from Luoyang during the East Han Dynasty. It moved westwards, via the Hexi Corridor(Wuwei, Zhangye , Dunhuang, Jiuquan...), and divided into northern, middle, and southern routes. The southern and middle route rejoined at Kashgar, then passed through Pamir Plateau and north of Aral Sea, reached Baghdad and Damascus, moved northwestwards, finally ended at Constantinople. While the northern route moved through Turpan, Talgar, and Almaty, turned northwest past the Aral Sea and north of the Caspian Sea, then and on to the Black Sea and got to Constantinople.

It has two concepts. Generally speaking, the silk road includes two, one is the Land Silk Road and the other is the Maritime Silk Road . In a narrow sense, the silk road often refers to the land silk road.

The route of the maritime silk road is centered on the South China Sea . The maritime silk road was formed as early as the Qin and Han Dynasties, developed in the Three Kingdoms and Sui dynasties, and became more and more prosperous in the Tang and Song dynasties.

Silk Road Map

Northern Route

It started from the ancient capital of China - Chang'an (Xi'an) , and later it was moved further east to Luoyang. Then, the route stretches through the Chinese province of Gansu along the Hexi corridor and split into three further routes, two of them split at Dunhuang bypassing the Taklamakan Desert to rejoin at Kashgar , and the other going north of the Tianshan mountains through Anxi, Turpan , Yining and met the Dunhuang-Kashagar routes at Koland.

In Kashgar, the route split again. The southern branch connects Balch to Merv, while the northern branch is from Kashgar to Koland, Samarkand, and reaches Merv. In Merv, the two branches rejoined and headed westward to Qumis, Seleucia, and finally Dura-Europos. The routes split again west of Kashgar, with a southern branch heading down the Alai Valley towards Termez (in modern Uzbekistan) and Balkh (Afghanistan), while the other traveled through Kokand in the Fergana Valley (in present-day eastern Uzbekistan) and then west across the Karakum Desert. Both routes joined the main southern route before reaching ancient Merv, Turkmenistan. Another branch of the northern route turned northwest past the Aral Sea and north of the Caspian Sea, then and on to the Black Sea.

Southern Route

The southern route was mainly a single route from China through the Karakoram mountains, a road connecting Pakistan and China. It then set off westwards, but with southward branches so travelers could complete the journey from various points. Crossing the high mountains, it passed through northern Pakistan, over the Hindu Kush mountains, and into Afghanistan, rejoining the northern route near Merv, Turkmenistan. From Merv, it stretches mountainous northern Iran, Mesopotamia, and the northern tip of the Syrian Desert to the Levant. Another branch road traveled from Herat through Susa to Charax Spasinu at the head of the Persian Gulf and across to Petra and on to Alexandria and other eastern Mediterranean ports from where ships carried the cargoes to Rome.

Maritime Route

The Maritime Silk Road or Maritime Silk Route often refers to the maritime section of Silk Road that connects China to Southeast Asia, the Indonesian archipelago, the Indian subcontinent, the Arabian peninsula, etc. There are mainly 3 routes. ① The eastern ocean route runs from China along the harbor to North Korea and Japan. ② The southern maritime route runs from China along the seaport to Southeast Asian countries. ③ The western route runs from China along the seaport to the coastal countries of South Asia, Arabia, and East Africa.

Silk Road Route in China

China has a long history with splendid culture with abundant resources, the "Silk Road" is definitely a world-famous route for international economic trades, connecting Asia, Africa, and Europe . It is the earliest commercial trade route in ancient times. The Silk Road extended more than 7,000 kilometers. While more than half of the whole length was located in China . In China, the Silk Road routes consisted of two sections: Eastern Silk Road and Western Silk Road.

Eastern Silk Road in China

Silk Road started from two capital cities of the Han Dynasty – Chang’an and Luoyang, moved westwards and split into northern, middle, and southern routes. The northern route started from Chang’an (from Luoyang in later Han), moved along the Wei River, reached Baoji and Longxian, climbed over Liupanshan Mountains, crossed Yellow River at Jingyuan, last got to Wuwei. This route was the earliest road which was short and lack of supply.

The middle route went from Chang’an(from Luoyang in later Han), separated from the northern route in Shanggui (today in Tianshui), passed by Liupanshan Mountains, arrived at Lanzhou, across the Yellow River, moved northwards to Wuwei. This route later became the major trade route because of its short length and better supply.

The southern route left Chang’an(from Luoyang in later Han), went via Tianshui, Lintao, and Linxia, crossed Yellow River in Yongjing, then passed Xining to Zhangye. This route had a good supply but was not chosen by most traders because of its long-distance.

The northern and middle Silk Road route rejoined the southern route at Zhangye, moved westwards via Jiuquan and Guazhou to one of the most famous cities on the Silk Road – Dunhuang which was the end of the eastern Silk Road in China.

Western Silk Road in China

Yangguang and Yumenguan Pass are two gates to the West Regions. The Silk Road left Dunhuang, then divided into two routes. The northern route started from Yumenguan Pass, traveled northward to Hami, then turned west to Gaochang(today in Turpan) from which the northern route became the later middle route because a new northern route was created in more northern West during East Han Dynasty. While the southern route chose Yangguan Pass as the starting point, passed by the southern edge of Taklimakan Desert, and got to Kashgar. The middle route left Gaochang, went along the northern edge of Taklimakan Desert, and then met the southern route at Kashgar.

Due to the tough road condition and barren environment of Taklimakan Desert and Lop Nur on the southern and middle route, East Han Dynasty created another route northwestward from Dunhuang, via Hami, Barkol Lake, Jimsar, Banquan, Huocheng, to Suiye which is the final stations of the northern route in China.

Orlando will pay $6 million to bring Travel + Leisure downtown

O rlando city commissioners signed off on an incentive package of more than $6 million this week to bring Travel + Leisure up the road to a planned headquarters downtown.

The company, formally Wyndham Destinations, plans to move its more than 900 current employees into 501 W. Church Street, near the Kia Center, from its current office in Williamsburg near SeaWorld Orlando. Travel + Leisure also plans to hire 102 more people in the coming years.

The agreements mark a culmination of talks Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer first revealed publicly in his State of Downtown speech last September.

Over the years, the city has used a variety of incentives to convince marquee companies ranging from Electronic Arts to Sonesta to bring their corporate offices to Orlando, in hopes that high-paying jobs will bolster the local economy. In the city’s 2019 deal with EA, the company, which moved from nearby Maitland, will recoup up to $9 million in property taxes if it maintains a workforce of at least 600 people at its new studio in Creative Village.

The city and its Community Redevelopment Agency offered separate incentives to facilitate the Travel + Leisure move, and both were approved by unanimous votes.

The city’s deal calls for paying out up to $2,250 per job over 8 years, with a maximum subsidy of $2,272,500, according to a city council agenda item. The positions will pay a median wage of $109,136, according to the agreement.

The company, which manages a portfolio of more than 20 timeshare resorts and travel brands, could receive up to another $4,000 per job through the CRA, or $4,040,000 over 10 years.

The agreement with the CRA states that Travel + Leisure will receive $2,000 per “high wage high value” job created, as well as another $2,000 per job under a program crafted to lure companies to set up offices with at least 750 employees in Parramore, a neighborhood city officials have worked develop economically.

Its 102 new positions are expected to pay 200% of the average annual wage in Orange County – or $120,934 – as part of the agreement with the CRA.

“Our move to Downtown Orlando will help us attract and retain outstanding talent in a competitive marketplace, while providing a modern office environment in the heart of our growing city,” said Kimberly Marshall, Travel + Leisure Co.’s chief human resources officer in a statement.

The company plans to spend $29.5 million building out its new office space at the corner of Church Street and Division Avenue.

It will move downtown after its current lease expires next year.
