James May Speaks Out After High-Speed Crash During The Grand Tour Filming

James May has spoken out about a recent car crash he was in, insisting he is “perfectly OK” after the smash.

On Saturday, it was reported the Grand Tour host had been taken to hospital after a high-speed crash.

According to The Sun , James was filming a challenge for the Amazon Prime Video show with co-stars Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond that saw them driving along a tunnel towards a rock wall at a Norwegian naval base.

James was claimed to be driving at 75 miles per hour when he jackknifed into a wall after he allegedly put his brakes on later than required.

The paper reported he was given a brain scan and suffered a broken rib after being taken to hospital.

James has since addressed the incident on Twitter, revealing it happened a while ago and was “not that bad”.

Thank you for all your kind comments and funny jokes re my crash, but it was a while back, not that bad, and I’m perfectly OK. Apologies to Evo fans for binning the VIII. #Bellend — James May (@MrJamesMay) August 13, 2022

He tweeted: “Thank you for all your kind comments and funny jokes re my crash, but it was a while back, not that bad, and I’m perfectly OK.

“Apologies to Evo fans for binning the VIII. #Bellend.”

He also told one follower he’d “made a cock-up and destroyed” the car in the accident.

After leaving the BBC’s Top Gear in 2015, Clarkson, Hammond and May have hosted three regular series of The Grand Tour, as well as a host of feature-length specials.

A fifth special has reportedly already completed filming, with a sixth currently in the works.

The Grand Tour is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.

Richard Hammond Explains How He Crashed The Rimac Concept One

The Grand Tour host thought he was going to die when he crashed the Rimac Concept One.

By now, Richard Hammond's recent crash in the Rimac Concept One that left him hospitalized with a fractured knee has been well-documented. While filming for the second series of The Grand Tour, the presenter was tearing around a hill climb circuit in Switzerland when he lost control of the electric supercar and rolled down a hill. Sitting down with Rimac's CEO Mate Rimac, Hammond has provided his most detailed account of the accident yet in an extended interview posted on DriveTribe.

During their fifth day of filming a comparison between the Lamborghini Aventador S, Acura NSX and Rimac Concept One , Hammond attempted one final run up the hill climb course. The back end stepped out after just crossing the finish line, causing him to lose control and roll the Rimac down the hillside, miraculously missing three houses on the way down. As it rolled, the car dug huge craters into the ground before coming to a stop upside down after rolling 110 meters, as shown in photos shared by Rimac taken from the scene. Rimac offered a simple explanation why Hammond crashed: he approached the corner too fast, which caused the torque vectoring system to send the car into oversteer.

Hammond was baffled by this explanation however, as he claimed the car was understeering in the four previous runs prior to the accident. He was wearing a helmet, but no racing harness. Unlike his jet-powered drag car crash in 2006 while filming for Top Gear, he was conscious throughout the entire crash in the Rimac. "I was aware that I was up high, and that inevitably the car was going to come down," he recalled. "And yeah of course there was a moment of dread - 'Oh God, I'm going to die'. And also I was aware that the car was taking just such a beating. If you look at those craters, that's a big hole that's just impact and it looks like the thing has been dropped from space to leave a hole that big.

So yeah I was probably going 'well this is it'. In fact that is what was going through my mind. I thought 'I've had it'." Soon after telling the emergency team to drag him out of the car by his hands because he thought he had broken his leg, the car burst into flames. Rimac believed the Concept One held up well, but will be using data from the crash to investigate ways to prevent a fire from happening in the future. Only eight examples of the Rimac Concept One were built, but there are now only seven left so it's even more exclusive. Worse still, the car Hammond destroyed was a customer example.

One consolation is that you'll still get to see the Rimac Concept One appear in second series of The Grand Tour, as filming had already wrapped up before the crash. We'll be riding shotgun as it tackles the Goodwood hillclimb on Friday, so we'll let you know how that goes!

Watch the Evo Crash That Sent James May To the Hospital

The crash occurred in a Norwegian tunnel with the Grand Tour host driving a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VIII.

Clarkson, May, and Richard Hammond road-tripped through Norway, Sweden, and Finland in a trio of all-wheel drive sedans, with Clarkson in an Audi RS4 and Hammond in a Subaru Impreza WRX STI. Hammond and May make fun of Clarkson for not actually bringing a true rally-bred car, so he wants to prove his car is fastest. They come upon—or it's made to seem like they came upon—a narrow tunnel road in Norway where they decide to see who's fastest. The tunnel lights up green as they pass through, with red lights towards the end where there's a wall.

May brakes way too late, and tries to turn the Evo to avoid hitting the wall, but he's carrying far too much speed. (Video of his speedometer shows he hit 78 mph before hitting the brakes.) Almost the entire right side of the car hits the wall, and in the onboard camera, you see May getting thrown around in his seat, with various items flying around the cabin.

Fortunately, May gets out of the car on his own, and a medical team checks him out before bringing him to the hospital. After being released, May is shown in a workshop fixing the Evo, and though it suffered very extensive damage, the car is made roadworthy for the rest of the trip.

In hindsight, the whole thing seems astonishingly unsafe. Yes, there was a medical team present in case of an accident, but this was a high-speed run done with absolutely no margin for error. The cars were also equipped with studded tires, which really don't work well on dry pavement, but more critically there was no safety equipment in use. Had the car been fit with a cage, a racing seat, and five-point harnesses, and had May been wearing a helmet, and a HANS device, his risk of injury would've decreased significantly. The fact that there was unsecured cargo added danger to the situation; that anything could strike him at speed. That's the sort of thing that'll get you in trouble at a track day, and makes the video a good "what not to do" primer for anyone looking to do high-speed driving.

You just don't expect to see this sort of "safety third" attitude for a production of this scale and budget.

‘The Grand Tour’ Host Richard Hammond Injured in ‘Serious’ Car Accident While Filming

“It was the biggest crash I’ve ever seen and the most frightening,” co-star Jeremy Clarkson says

the grand tour car crash

Amazon’s “The Grand Tour” host Richard Hammond was involved in a “serious” car crash while filming in Switzerland, the series said on Saturday.

Fortunately, his injuries appear to be limited to a knee fracture. The car wasn’t so lucky.

“Richard Hammond was involved in a serious crash after completing the Hemburg Hill Climb in Switzerland in a Rimac Concept One, an electric super car built in Croatia, during filming for ‘The Grand Tour’ Season 2 on Amazon Prime Video, but very fortunately suffered no serious injury,” the series said in a statement. “Richard was conscious and talking, and climbed out of the car himself before the vehicle burst into flames. He was flown by Air Ambulance to hospital in St Gallen to be checked over revealing a fracture to his knee.”

“Nobody else was in the car or involved in the accident, and we’d like to thank the paramedics on site for their swift response,” the statement continued. “The cause of the crash is unknown and is being investigated.”

Here are a pair of photos showing what was left of the burned-out car:

And here is “Grand Tour” co-host Jeremy Clarkson’s own take on what must have been a scary scene:

It was the biggest crash I've ever seen and the most frightening but incredibly, and thankfully, Richard seems to be mostly OK. — Jeremy Clarkson (@JeremyClarkson) June 10, 2017

Hammond, Clarkson and James May were the original hosts of “Top Gear.” Following Clarkson’s firing for punching a producer, the trio took their schtick over to Amazon.

The Grand Tour's James May opens up about dramatic crash in new special

He was hospitalised after a stunt went wrong.

preview for The Grand Tour Presents: A Scandi Flick - Official Trailer (Prime Video)

During filming for The Grand Tour 's latest special, A Scandi Flick , James May was hospitalised after being involved in a car crash. Now, the presenter has said that, while the crash looked dramatic, he came away pretty well, considering.

"The car wasn't, the car was pretty bent actually," he added. "I didn't think it was gonna go again. But you know, with a bit of help from some ingenious local mechanics, obviously, I couldn't do very much of it because my rib hurt but yeah, they sort of squeezed it back into shape, shall we say?"

Fans of The Grand Tour , and previously Top Gear , are used to seeing May and his fellow presenters Richard Hammond and Jeremy Clarkson getting into tricky situations and having to find inventive solutions, and it sounds like this time was no different.

"But actually, because we managed to make the car work, we carried on," May said. "We lost about a day, because I had to mend the car, and I was in the hospital for the night. But apart from that, I don't really think it made any difference.

"We still did all the things we wanted to do – it didn't affect towing the caravan, it didn't affect doing the skewering thing, driving on the lake. No, it didn't really make any difference.

"It meant that the hero of the show became the yellow car for soldiering on which we wouldn't have had without the crash, I suppose. I did it deliberately, I knew it was going to be boring otherwise [so I] sort of drove it to the cliff!"

Luzhniki Stadium

Luzhniki

Club: none | Opening: 1956 | Capacity: 81,006 seats

History and description

Luzhniki Stadium, initially called Central Lenin Stadium, was built between 1955 and 1956. It was the result of the ambition of the Soviet leadership to upgrade the country’s sports facilities after the Soviet Union had tasted its first post-war successes at the 1952 Olympics.

Works on Luzhniki Olympic Complex started in 1954 and construction of its centrepiece stadium, also called the Grand Sports Arena, in 1955. The stadium got finished in just 450 days and officially opened on 31 July 1956.

Luzhniki Stadium served as the centrepiece stadium of the 1980 Olympics, hosting the opening and closing ceremonies, athletics events, football finals, and equestrian programme.

In 1982, a stadium disaster took place at the stadium during a second round UEFA Cup match between FC Spartak and Dutch side HFC Haarlem. In the dying seconds of the match, people started rushing for the exits to make it to the metro before the rest of the crowd. When someone fell on the icy staircases, chaos ensued, and the resulting crush and domino effect killed 66 people.

Until the 1990s, the roofless stadium could hold just over 100,000 spectators. In 1996, the stadium got extensively renovated, which included the construction of a roof over the stands and the refurbishment of the seating areas, which resulted in a decrease of capacity.

In 1999, Luzhniki Stadium hosted the UEFA Cup final between Parma and Marseille (3-0), and in 2008 the Champions League final between Manchester United and Chelsea (1-1).

The stadium was regularly used by Spartak Moscow, lacking a home of their own, until they moved to the newly built  Otkritie Arena  in 2014.

When Russia got awarded the 2018 World Cup , it was soon clear that Luzhniki Stadium would host the final and as a result had to undergo a large redevelopment. It hosted its last football match in May 2013 and closed following the IAAF Athletics World Championships in August 2013.

Redevelopment works entailed the complete reconstruction of the stands, adding a second tier, the removal of the running tracks, and an expanded roof structure. The characteristic exterior of the stadium was left intact. Works were completed in the summer of 2017, and the first football match at the reopened stadium, a friendly between Russia and Argentina (0-1), was played on 11 November 2017.

During the 2018 World Cup, Luzhniki hosted the opening match, three more first round group matches, a round of 16 match, the semi-final between Croatia and England (2-1), and the final between France and Croatia (4-2).

How to get to Luzhniki Stadium

Luzhniki Stadium is located on the Luzhniki Sports Complex, an area of sports facilities and park land in a bend of the Moskva River about 6 kilometres south-west of Moscow’s city centre.

The stadium can be reached with the red metro line 1. Station Sportivnaya, or alternatively Vorob’yovy Gory, both lie within short walking distance of the stadium. Line 1 directly connects with Moscow’s city centre, and the ride from either Okhotny Ryad or Biblioteka takes no more than 10 minutes.

Luzhniki Stadium lies practically adjacent to Moscow’s Third Ring Road. If arriving by car, orientate yourself with regards to the Moscow River and take the first exit after crossing the Moscow River at the bend where the stadium is located.

Address: Luzhnetskaya naberezhnaya 24, Moscow

Eat, drink, and sleep near Luzhniki Stadium

Luzhniki forms part of the Luzhniki Sports Complex and is surrounded by other sports facilities and parks. Its location right on the river Moskva is pleasant on a summer’s day, but there is little around in terms of eating and drinking, which can therefore better be done in central Moscow.

If you’re into a bit of culture though, the nearby Novodevichy Convent is well worth a visit, while the Moscow State University building on the opposite side of the Moskva river is one of Moscow’s best-known landmarks.

There are a few hotels to choose from if you want to stay close to Luzhniki Stadium, most near Sportivnaya metro station, e.g.  Yunost Hotel , Business Hotel Spektr , Olimp Hotel and Blues Hotel .

Richard Hammond Crashes Once Again During Season 3 Hill Climb In China

Once again, Richard Hammond was involved in an accident during a Hill Climb. Thankfully, he wasn’t in a high powered all-electric car, but instead, a small Chinese, three-wheeled shoebox.

the grand tour car crash

At the end of the sixth episode of The Grand Tour Season 3 , the trio aim to race up a tight and winding road. The car that does it in the shortest amount of time and suffering the least amount of damage wins. The road isn’t tarmacked however, so Clarkson pops a tyre. He did however complete what they’ve named the ‘hill climb’ faster than James, who took it very slowly but with no damage.

the grand tour car crash

After Clarkson and May have completed the climb, Hammond begins. He’s however not driving the Cadillac he was driving for the majority of the episode because it broke down earlier in the show. What he’s left with is an unsightly three-wheeler. And as we all know from playing games like Forza and Top Gear’s segment on the Reliant Robin , three-wheelers aren’t overly stable.

the grand tour car crash

The race quickly ends with Hammond flipping his vehicle. They make it out as if his vehicle actually fell off the side of the steep road, but we have a feeling that may have been a bit of camera trickery. The flip however, was not, as it can clearly be seen from the camera inside the car.

We’re sure his wife Mindy wasn’t so please about this after Hammond’s history of accidents, but it does look as if this was written into the script and therefore, a controlled situation. Let’s hope so, anyway.
