Grand Canyon Tours from Phoenix & Scottsdale

The majority of Grand Canyon visitors who are not from the Southwest fly into Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix, AZ. The most direct route from Phoenix to the Grand Canyon South Rim is about 230 miles. There are several Grand Canyon tour companies that leave from Phoenix or Scottsdale, though there are fewer options for this service directly from the Metro Phoenix are than if you were leaving from northern Arizona. If you are wanting to head north towards the Grand Canyon directly from the Phoenix airport, Arizona Shuttle offers transportation service to Sedona and Flagstaff every couple of hours. But most visitors post up in the Scottsdale and Phoenix area for a few days and enjoy what this resort city has to offer before heading towards the wilds of the Great Southwest. Visiting the Grand Canyon for a day trip is definitely doable, but it makes for a long day. With the drive taking just under four hours each way, your trip will be no less breath-taking, but likely abbreviated. Going on an air or helicopter tour once you get to the canyon is another great way to make the most of your time at this Natural Wonder of the World. If spending time at the Grand Canyon is important to you, consider staying a night in Sedona , Flagstaff , or Williams .

Nothing can prepare you for that initial Grand Canyon experience, where the earth opens up beyond the forest, giving way to a vast, craggy abyss. Elk and deer roam the rims, and a network of roads winds between different viewpoints, each one offering a fresh perspective on a natural wonder. The South Rim is accessible throughout the year and can be accessed most readily on a tour from Phoenix, or its adjoining city of Scottsdale, in Arizona, which are roughly 230 miles (370km) away. These five tours take care of the details, letting you make the most of your Grand Canyon trip.

Continue on the scenic drive, through Oak Creek Canyon. At the Grand Canyon there is time to visit two of the best viewpoints on the South Rim. About this Guide to Grand Canyon Tours from Phoenix

Inside this local guide to taking a Grand Canyon tour from Phoenix, you’ll find expert advice about:

  • The easiest way to get to the Grand Canyon from Phoenix
  • Is it worth it to drive to the Grand Canyon from Phoenix?
  • Why you should take a tour of the Grand Canyon
  • The best Grand Canyon tours from Phoenix
  • Additional resources for exploring the Grand Canyon

How to Get to the Grand Canyon From Phoenix

The Grand Canyon is directly north of Phoenix, but it’s a pretty long drive. The quickest way heads through Flagstaff and takes 3.5 hours without any traffic.

You could also detour through Sedona via Highway 89 for an extra road trip stop on the way to Flagstaff, which will add about half an hour to the drive.

Pro Tip: If you’re going to swing through Sedona, you might as well spend some time there, as a quick drive won’t be nearly enough to take it all in!

Is It Worth Driving to the Grand Canyon from Phoenix?

I’m not going to lie to you, it’s a long drive from Phoenix to the Grand Canyon. It should be just under a 4-hour drive to the South Rim, but if you hit typical weekend traffic, it will definitely take longer.

I’ve flown into Phoenix to get to the Grand Canyon several times, but I always spend at least several days at the Grand Canyon to make the trek worthwhile.

If you want to visit the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, it is an even longer drive of around 7 hours from Phoenix.

Although it is quite the schlep, it can be worth it if you’re seeking seclusion and stunning views, both of which you can find at Toroweap Overlook, which is one of the most underrated attractions at the Grand Canyon, in my opinion.

Local Tip : Be aware that the Grand Canyon sits at a higher elevation than Phoenix, so expect it to be much cooler when you arrive there, and be prepared with layers, especially if you’re visiting the Grand Canyon in winter .

Why It’s Worth Taking a Tour of the Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon is truly one of the most amazing places in the US. Seeing the stunning, sprawling vistas will be a memory you’ll never forget, and it is worth taking a tour to explore the best Grand Canyon views in this awesome landscape.

Sunset tours of the Grand Canyon are an extra special experience, with the sky catching fire over the red rock formations of the canyon.

Pro Tip: Tours are best for folks who want to learn about the history and geology of this place. It’s also a great idea for those who don’t want to drive and would instead want to enjoy the scenery.

Of course, if you’re a photographer, a tour is a great idea because you’ll get access to some unique views that you may not catch if you go on your own. But, you can definitely go it alone and enjoy spots like Hermit Road or try the Rim to Rim hike .

My pick for the #1 🏆 tour of the Grand Canyon from Phoenix is this Grand Canyon South Rim tour . Not only do you get to fly ✈️ over the widest part of the canyon, but you’ll get to do a cool Hummer tour too.

What our Guests say about Colors & Canyons

We had an awesome experience on this helicopter tour. I am actually writing because I have to commend our pilot, Jared Young. He was totally incredible, polite, very sweet and just was so much fun ! He was the best! and I don’t think we would have had as much fun if not for Jared. When we come back to do this tour again, we will definitely request this pilot. Definitely worth it!

Michael Miller , Las Vegas

Thanks very much and please pass on my compliments to the team at Maverick.

Rosemary M. , Canada

The tour was amazing! Beyond imagination! Thank you Maverick

Naveen Agrawal , Bainbridge Island, WA

"You guys have your act together. It was like a dream come true for a first timer traveling alone. Nothing went wrong, it all went right. You can't go wrong with Caravan. It's an adventure without the risk. Pure fun, and the new friends you will make are priceless." Ms. K.P., Boynton Beach, Florida
"This tour was the most amazing trip on which we've ever been. This was our first trip out West and we could not have asked for a better, more enjoyable and more valued tour! The hotels were great, the sights were breathtaking, and the meals were excellent. I enjoyed the food and the friendly staff. I would recommend this tour along with our same tour director and driver. We never felt rushed and we can't wait to go on another Caravan tour. Thank you for a truly memorable and extremely valued tour. Keep up the good work." Mr. & Mrs. S.P., Harrisonburg, Virginia
"This is a 'five star' trip that everyone should take the time to do. Enjoyed the leisurely pace, delicious meals, and outstanding side trips. Not only was there breathtaking scenery in the Grand Canyon, but everyday promised more and better things to see. Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Zion National Park, Lake Powell, Monument Valley, I can't say enough good things. Thanks to our tour director, we learned SO MUCH about our country's history in the West. This was our first Caravan tour. Caravan is a very organized, efficient tour group that we will take again. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!" Mr. & Mrs. J.G., Venice, Florida
"I have always been a cruise person, but you have converted me! The whole trip was one wonderful sightseeing adventure. I am so glad we took a guided tour as opposed to driving so both of us could see the sights rather than one driving and missing it all. The tour director and driver were excellent in alerting us in advance of upcoming views. I had no idea how beautiful the area was and how unique each park would be. Being able to see the diverse areas on the tour made it even more spectacular than I could have imagined. This trip was way beyond my expectations. I have only done day tours so I was not sure what to expect. By the end, I felt like everyone was family. I have never been so sorry to see a trip end. If all the tours are as good as this was and the tour directors are as knowledgeable as ours, we will be on more Caravan tours. I have read about all the canyons, but I never imagined the beauty of each of them and the other areas we visited." Mr. & Mrs. J.R. Yorktown, Virginia
"Caravan is so value packed and has attended to the most minute detail to get the most value for our money. The hotels were terrific! Loved not having to deal with luggage. Once on the tour, they treated us like royalty! The meals were all EXCELLENT! I was so impressed that Caravan provided such wonderful meals in our tour cost. We absolutely had the 'dream team' with our tour director and driver! I enjoyed the sightseeing activities and I also enjoyed the 'free time' in each National Park. The tram system allowed each of us to do as much as we wanted. It was our first guided tour, but it won't be the last. I wouldn't choose another company if Caravan has a package of where we want to go. Some friends drove from Oklahoma and made the same trip. They spent twice the money and didn't see half of what we did. This was my first Caravan tour and it will not be my last. It was exactly what was described in the brochure. It was smoothly run and enjoyable. Thank you for making it so great for so many for so long! It was a great trip and we would choose Caravan in the future!" Mr. & Mrs. J.W., Downers Grove, Illinois
"The entire tour lived up to and exceeded our expectations. We enjoyed the fact that I didn't have to drive. The hotels and meals were taken care of as well as luggage handled professionally and in a very timely manner. We really enjoyed this tour and are of the opinion that we would struggle to duplicate it entirely on our own. Very enjoyable, a good mix of people from different parts of our country who became our friends on the road. In terms of bang for the buck, it is a deal hard to beat in today's world of high gasoline prices. We look forward to another trip with Caravan, next year to Yellowstone, hoping to see our same tour guide again." Mr. & Mrs. B.W., Monroe, North Carolina
"Overall, a wonderful eight days, during which I was exposed to sights I never thought existed. The tour was well conducted, the accommodations were excellent and the food was great. Don't know how you do it for what you charge. Will strongly consider other Caravan offerings, and recommend this tour to others." Mr. & Mrs. D.B., Pinellas Park, Florida
