Katwijk plantation MTB tour

We leave at 8.00 uur from “Cycling in Suriname” on the mountainbike to “Leonberg.” We’ll get here a boat and depart to plantation Rust en Werk at the Commewijneriver. From Rust en Werk we cycle through about 14 farms (some still inhabited, others abandoned) to the old but still inhabited plantation Kronenburg. In this plantation we cross the river to return to plantation Katwijk.

Leonberg is an old coffee plantation that now unfortunately nothing to see more of them. Currently, it serves as a small harbor where boats crossing the Suriname river or the Commewijneriver go on. Is across the street from Leonberg “Fort Nieuw Amsterdam.” This point is also where the Suriname River and Commewijneriver come together and jointly flow into the Atlantic.

This plantation is now a fish and shrimp farm and there are still thousands of cows graze. Also, here to see the graves of the two daughters of the founder of plantation “Wigbold Crommelin.”

Katwijk is the last still working coffee plantation in Suriname. Here are two kinds of coffee planted and processed, the delicious Arabica coffee and Rebusta. Also citrus is grown there and it is done on a small scale farming. Arriving at this plantation we get a tour and see the coffee and citrus fields. We also see how the coffee is processed further. After the tour we will enjoy a delicious lunch and then take a refreshing dip in the pool! To finish, we drink a cup of course “KW” (Katwijk) coffee. When we have done all that we cycle on dirt roads as much as possible back to New Amsterdam where we turn the river with a boat crossing over, back to Paramaribo.

Important information:

This is a mountain bike tour which is to do for everyone in fairly good condition. The road we take is fairly flat, but some pieces may have some muddy, pulls you so (old) clothes may be that dirty! Bring sun protection because the sun can be very bright! Towel and swimsuit

The rest of the tour is fully catered with: a good mountain bike, professional guide, Lunch, Snack’s, non-alcoholic drinks, boat rides and tour the plantations.

Tour description

On this boat trip, you will visit the district of Commewijne, known for its many historic plantations. This district exudes a peaceful atmosphere and still has clear characteristics of the colonial past. The district is mainly inhabited by the Javanese community, and they live mainly from fishing and agriculture. There are also Hindus living around Meerzorg. Both population groups are descendants of the contract workers from India and Indonesia, who were put to work on the plantations. In several places, people still live in the way they were used to in their country of origin.

Op weg naar Leonsberg passeren we de bekende Anton Dragtenweg. Aan deze weg staan vele imposante en dure huizen, de buurt staat ook bekend als elite buurt. Vanaf Leonsberg vertrekt de traditionele tentboot, waarmee we de Surinamerivier oversteken. We stoppen bij de voormalige plantage Rust & Werk. Hier bevindt zich een pittoresk vissersdorpje en de oude koloniale koffie- & suikerplantages. Hierna vervolgen wij onze tour verder naar de oude koffieplantage Frederiksdorp. This Fort Nieuw Amsterdam was built in 1734 by Dutch colonists at a strategic location in order to protect the plantations behind it from English and French enemies. You will spend these days exploring the Commewijne district where halfway through the 18 e Century, approximately 500 plantations flourished. With a tent boat, you sail from Leonsberg on the Suriname River to New Amsterdam. This is an 18th century fort and, nowadays, an open-air museum about the colonial times. You sail further to the old plantation Rust en Werk, which now serves as a cattle farm and shrimp farm. Eventually you will reach the renovated coffee and cacao plantation Frederiksdorp for dinner and overnight stay. The guide will show you around the beautiful complex and tell you all about the former plantation life.

The landscape betrays the fertile clay soil that was reclaimed by the Zeelanders into agricultural land. Unfortunately, it is all past glory. You sail to Alkmaar, so you can see small farmers. The guide tells you about the history and the different cultures in the district. After lunch, you depart by boat towards Leonsberg and by bus to Paramaribo.

Dolphin Tour - 1 Day

Description, tour schedule, picking list.

The Surinamese dolphin called “Profosu” is a brackish water dolphin that travels between the coast, the Commewijne and the Suriname river. With a special dolphin boat we go out looking for this dolphin with a pink belly, d eparting from Leonsberg where we board the boat. Our guide will give information about the area and there are lot of birds to be spotted as well.

While enjoying a drink, we search the waters for the dolphins. Once they have been spotted, the spectacle begins. Sometimes they jump far above the water and if you are lucky you can take some nice pictures.

After enjoying this, the boat sets for either the plantation Johanna and Margaretha or to plantation Rust en Werk.

We make a little tour on the plantation and enjoy a snack and a drink.

Satisfied and relaxed we go back in the boat towards Leonsberg and have some last lovely views on our way back in the boat.

Day 1: Arrival in Paramaribo Your flight to Paramaribo departs from Schiphol. Upon arrival, a guide will be ready to escort you to Hotel Queens, your stay for the first two nights.

Day 2: Exploratory tour through Paramaribo Today we take a walking tour of Paramaribo, exploring highlights such as the Chinese market, the wooden basilica/cathedral and other sights. Our expert guide will tell you all about these places. The afternoon is free to spend, ideal for relaxing by the hotel pool or exploring the city further. Breakfast is included today.

Day 3: Adventure on Fungu Island At 7:00 am we leave by car for Witagron. Upon arrival we will have lunch and load the boats for the trip to the Raleigh Falls. After arrival we will meet the manager and you can settle in the accommodation. The afternoon is ideal to explore the island and perhaps take a refreshing dip in the river. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included today.

Day 4: To the top of the Voltzberg After breakfast we get ready for a fascinating tour through the forest to the top of the Voltzberg. Along the way we may encounter different animals such as monkeys and birds. The climb to the top (240 m) offers beautiful views over the tropical rainforest. For some refreshment we stop at the Ajoemara Falls before returning to our lodge for a nice get-together after dinner. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included today.

Day 5: To the Mother Falls After breakfast we sail to the breathtaking Mother Falls. After lunch you will have free time to swim, fish, sunbathe, relax in a hammock or just enjoy. Around 6 p.m. we walk to the airport, where you can spot different bird species and experience the sunset. After dinner there will be a nice get-together and an optional cultural show with singing and dancing by the Raleigh boys. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included today.

Day 6: Back to Paramaribo Around 10:00 am we leave by boat for Witagron, from where we return to Paramaribo by car. Breakfast and lunch are included today.

Day 7: Free day in Paramaribo Today you have a free day in Paramaribo to spend at your leisure. Breakfast is included today.

Day 8: Commewijne tour We leave Leonsberg/Marine Trap at 9am. We visit Fort Nieuw Amsterdam, a 17th century fort with a rich history. After the tour we sail to the Rust en Werk plantation. Depending on the tide, we explore the Rust en Werk creek and visit this plantation. Breakfast and lunch are included today.

Day 9: Peperpot Plantation Peperpot Nature Park, on the Suriname River outside Paramaribo, was a coffee and cocoa plantation for centuries and is now a protected nature reserve. Managed by a foundation, the more than 820 hectare park preserves its biodiversity. With more than 270 bird species and six of Suriname's eight felines, this is an internationally renowned spot for birdwatching. It is also home to monkeys, special insects, giant anteaters and butterflies. Today breakfast and lunch are included.

Day 10: Brownsberg – Ston Island The journey from Paramaribo to Brownsberg is by bus. From the Mazaroni plateau on Brownsberg you have a beautiful view of the reservoir, followed by a walk to the Leo and/or Irene falls, surrounded by beautiful nature. In the afternoon you travel to Ston Island for an overnight stay. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included today.

Day 11: Ston Island - Jaw Jaw After a boat tour on the reservoir with stops at waterfalls, enjoy various activities such as fishing, kayaking, swimming and relaxing. The journey then continues to Jaw Jaw by canoe from Atjonie, where you can spend the afternoon as you wish. You can relax at the beautiful Jaw Jaw rapids near your accommodation. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included today.

Day 12: Jaw Jaw A morning walk through the rainforest and a village walk will introduce you to the Saramaccan culture with their traditional activities. After lunch you will visit Gunsi village and take a walk to New Aurora/Laduani, followed by a boat trip to the Ferulasi rapids. Back in Jaw Jaw you can enjoy an evening-long cultural show. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included today.

Day 13: Jaw Jaw - Paramaribo After enjoying the beautiful surroundings it is time to return to Paramaribo. Breakfast and lunch are included.

Day 14: Free day in Paramaribo Today you can spend as you wish, breakfast is included.

Day 15: Free and transfer to Zanderij Enjoy Paramaribo for a while, maybe buy some souvenirs, relax on the waterfront or by the pool before you leave. After noon the bus will take you to the airport for the overnight flight to the Netherlands. Breakfast included.

Day 16: Home Arrival at Schiphol, coming home!

Are you in for a relaxed day at the beach? Our Braamspunt daytrip will provide you just that. This beautiful area forms a sand dune on the coast of Surinam, and is famous for its special bird species and seaturtles. The perfect place to enjoy the sun, the sea, the beach and the amazing wildlife.

Braamspunt Xperience

Around 4 pm, we depart from Leonsberg. Our boatsman will welcome us there, and bring us to Braamspunt in a stunning boattrip. On our way over there, we will look for the many dolphins that live around here.

After our arrival at Braamspunt, you will have some time to enjoy our new built camp with a lovely lounge area, right on the beach of Braamspunt. At night, we will stroll down the beach, to see if we can observe some seaturtles, laying their eggs here. After a lovely time at the beach, we head back to Leonsberg, where we will arrive around midnight.

About this tour

Spotting dolphins in Commewijne is definitely a must for lovers of these beautiful animals. You travel by traditional fisherman’s boat and will sail along the mangrove trees to the confluence of the Suriname River and the Commewijne River. Here, we look for dolphins. With a bit of luck, it won’t be long before you are joined by the dolphins that playfully swim around the boat. The Surinamse dolphin is known for its curious character and is called the “Profusu.” An interesting fact is that the local boatmen often use upbeat music to catch the attention of the curious and playful dolphins. They come close to the boat and sometimes put on a spectacular show!

Brownsberg is the most popular destination of the Surinamese interior. On this website you will find all sorts of information about the activities that you can do and the reservoir (Ston Island). You can book your trip through this site and   enjoy  the interior of Suriname.

Brownsberg nature park is located in the district of Brokopondo 112 kilometres south of Paramaribo. Brownsberg protrudes approximately 500 metres above the surrounding jungle and is 12,200 hectares in size. Brownsberg is part of the Amazon basin, the largest rainforest on Earth. In this free nature t here is  a rich variety of animals. Of snakes to monkeys and frogs to boars. These animals  you  can  encounter just in the nature reserve Brownsberg. For the nature lovers Brownsnberg is a real attraction. In the Brownsberg area there are small creeks that lead to waterfalls. Here you can also take a refreshing dip in the water.

The reservoir

The reservoir is a lake that originated in the 1960s. There was a part of the forest, about as big as Utrecht, put under water. This is done to form a dam so that there could be excited by hydropower energy. With this energy  bauxite  could be processed .

In this reservoir you can still see the treetops protrude, these trees are not cut down due to money savings. In the reservoir there are piranhas and also there are growing plants. So threatened the water hyacinth in the years 60 ´ the functioning of the dam. It is therefore very impressive to sail between treetops and water plants.
