Boats and a floating hut on Bulusan Lake, Bicol

Situated in the sheltered tropical lushness of Sorsogon, the small town of Bulusan serves as home to Mount Bulusan, the fourth most active volcano in the Philippines. The volcanic mountain rises at 5,135ft above sea level on the large expanse of Bulusan National Park in the southernmost portion of Luzon. You can explore the park through a tour of Sorsogon's top tourist spots .

Subic Beach is an idyllic beach spot in Calintaan and one of the pink sand islands in Matnog (others being Tikling and the Juan Lagoon Fish Sanctuary). Offering more than just its stunning waves and finely crushed red corals decorating its beds of sand, Subic Beach is also the gateway to a series of sea caves and rock formations that you can explore from a short sailing distance away.

Ready your trekking shoes for a scenic hiking activity in one of the off-beat destinations in the region: Binurong Point. Located in the meandering terrains along the coast of Baras municipality, this hiking trail is a popular tourist spot among adventure and nature enthusiasts alike.

Reaching the pastoral cliff offers endless views of the wide-open sea and lush, lyrical terrains enveloping the region that's worth a thousand pictures. 9. Daraga Church

Facade of Daraga Church in Albay, Bicol

Daraga Church sits on top of a hill overlooking Mount Mayon Volcano and is considered a religious landmark in Legazpi, Albay. A must-visit for first-time visitors in Bicol's regional center, walking down its halls feels like a short journey through history, religion, and design.

The church was originally named Nuestra Señora de la Porteria (Our Lady of the Gate) Parish Church and first established as a settlement by people relocating from Cagsawa after a major eruption of the Mayon Volcano. In 1772, the Spanish government granted permission to build the religious structure with the intention of fostering a new community in the south of Cagsawa.

The present church was built in Barangay Santa Maria under the orchestration of Franciscan priests in 1773 as a replacement for the old Cagsawa Church after it was devastated by a series of volcanic eruptions.

Today, this historic icon is a part of many Legazpi City tours for those who wish to get to know more about the Albay province capital during their visit.

Tourists float on rafts on Sumlang Lake near Mayon Volcano

If you're looking to witness 360-degree views of Mayon Volcano without the hassle of tourist crowds, Sumlang Lake is your safest bet. A calm and relaxing destination to travel around, this enchanting attraction boasts an unobstructed panorama of the world-renowned conically shaped volcano.

However, this atmospheric beauty wasn't always the stunning landmark tourists visit today. The lake was once pervaded by water lilies, volcanic debris, and filthy waters for years until the residents held a bayanihan (communal work) initiative to rehabilitate the 14-hectare body of water. The effort has paid off; it is now a famous rendezvous for couples and small group tours.

Hidden in the outskirts of Legazpi, the lake sits on the Albay Agri Ethno Eco Village in Camalig town and is accessible via jeep from the city center. Don’t forget to try riding on a traditional bamboo raft while enjoying the beautiful scenery Albay has to offer. It's also home to Socorro's Lakeside Restaurant and Grill, one of the best restaurants in Albay .

Towering at 156m with a 360-degree panoramic view of the Mayon Volcano, this scenic landscape also hosts many extreme sports activities like a 320m zip line, hiking, biking, and paintball that even the less adventurous would dare to try. What else does a nature park offer aside from its most sought out viewpoint? It also has a 10-minute hiking trail to the summit and a World War II-like experience at the historic Japanese Tunnel.

This prime destination is another sightseeing spectacle, especially during a relaxing sunrise viewing in the early morning. Witness the golden sun rays stretching towards Legazpi, Daraga, and the Albay Gulf; no filter needed.

Locals and tourists visit 'Ina' to pray and seek her intercession in the quest for living a better life. 'Ina' here is the miraculous image of the Virgin Mary kept inside the church for devotees and road travelers to pay homage to Our Lady of Peñafrancia, enshrined in the only minor basilica in the whole Bicol Region and Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Caceres.

Known for its intricate and elaborate glass mosaic windows depicting stories in the Holy Bible to demonstrate Christian beliefs to the people, this religious sanctuary is also named one of the largest Marian Pilgrimage Sites in Asia. Whether you’re a believer or not, this church is a work of art that's worth the time to explore and learn its intriguing history.

With the hand-painted ceiling, the beautiful shrine at the altar, even the rustic souvenir shop, the basilica offers a peaceful respite for everyone enjoying a quiet Sunday before visiting the hot springs. Otherwise known as 'The Concealed White Beach of Bohol', Calaguas is a small group of islands located in the municipality of Vinzons. This serene coastline is now a marvel filled with untouched natural wonders, cottages, and DIY tents that city dwellers seek as a temporary refuge.

Tinaga Island

Calaguas houses three main islands: Tinaga, Guintinua, and Maculabo, plus a few other islets nearby. People recount their Calaguas experience during their time in Mahabang Buhangin Beach – a long stretch of white sand beach in Tinaga Island.

A must-visit solely for its unspoiled beauty and immersive nature, visitors are greeted with the sunny weather and calming sound of the waves, all of which are enjoyable even when you’re just camping in your tent.

Guintinua Island and Maculabo Island

While there are no commercial offers of island hopping tours in Calaguas, you can always hire a private boat that will take you around the area for the day. But you can always negotiate with the locals depending on your budget.

Aside from Tinaga, the deserted islands of Guintinua and Maculabo are also worth the visit to truly experience the serenity of Calaguas. You can also do some fun activities like snorkeling, diving, or even hiking to kill time. Buy a coconut from the locals to take with you and keep you refreshed on your day out.

Whitesand coast of Caramoan Island

If you want to go off-the-grid and escape the crowds, Caramoan’s host of secret beaches remain unknown to most tourists, making this isolated group of small islands a distinct castaway paradise.

With its powdery white sand beaches, crystal clear waters, mystic lagoons, and stalactite-rich caves, this should be a top priority in your itinerary. In fact, you can go on a Caramoan Island hopping tour with a private transfer from Virac, Catanduanes, if you're already in Bicol.

Caramoan is considered the Philippines’ last frontier in terms of uncharted islands. This secluded area sets the new standard for ideal tropical destinations with its well-preserved marine life and incredible rock formations.

Caramoan Island offers plenty of opportunities for kayaking, diving, snorkeling, rock climbing, and exploring lagoons and caves. You can experience all of these via island hopping and visit a few or all attractions in the main islands: Bag-ing, Cagbanilad, Catanhawan, Cotivas, Lahos, Matukad, Minalahos, Pitogo, and Sabitang-Laya. So explore as much as you can!

A whale shark swimming near the surface

Experience swimming with whale sharks when you go on a Donsol whale shark  tour!

Situated in the province of Sorsogon, Donsol is now a popular hub of tourism that houses the Whale Shark Interaction Eco-Tourism Project initiative of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Like many other touristy locations in the Bicol Region, the municipality is leading the way for sustainable tourism by involving the general public to discover and meet the gentle giants of the Philippine Sea. It's one of the best places to swim with whale sharks when in the Philippines .

See our popular Donsol Tours

Fondly called butanding in Tagalog, whale sharks come to Donsol Bay for 6-7 months to feed on the small fishing villages around the Donsol River. Around this time, tourists flock to Donsol for a chance to interact with these adorable sea creatures while in the coastal town.

Donsol is one of the few places in the world that guarantees a fun (and responsible) whale shark sighting in the country. To compare this experience to the same wildlife activity in Oslob , Donsol whale sharks are in their natural environment where boats do not overcrowd nor force-feed them. They are also closely monitored by the local government and only allow seasonal sightings and interactions from November to July to ensure its long-term sustainability.

View of Mayon Volcano from the Cagsawa Ruins park

In 1814, Mayon Volcano recorded its most violent eruption, completely burying the entire town of Cagsawa by fast-flowing volcanic matter, except for the belfry. But unlike any other beautiful place in the Philippines, this once lively town had to go through such tragedy for it to be one of the most popular Albay tourist spots in Daraga..

Set against the magnificent backdrop of its creator, Cagsawa Ruins Park is declared a national cultural treasure that brings visitors closer to the volcano. The site is just a short drive away from Daraga proper, and once you’ve arrived, several exhilarating Mayon Volcano tours await you, including the Mayon ATV tour around the foothills of Mount Mayon as well as awe-inspiring landscapes in the area.

Treat yourself afterward to a delectable feast of Bicolano cuisine at Albay restaurants before cooling down with a pleasant stroll inside the Cagsawa National Museum.

Cagsawa Ruins Albay Bicol

Oh hello there.

Apart from the astounding beauty of Cagsawa Ruins, what makes it even more special is the story behind its fame. The legendary bell tower is actually the remains of Cagsawa Church, a Franciscan church that was rebuilt in the year 1636. It was destroyed and buried underground after Mayon Volcano’s most violent eruption in history in 1814 when more than 1,200 people died.

Binurong point

It is located in Baras, Catanduanes, and it actually has an interesting history about the origins of its name. Binurong Point was derived from the word “buro” which refers to the process of preserving food with the use of salt and vinegar. It is said that Binurong Point was traditionally the place where locals go to preserve the fishes that they caught. Now, it is a breathtaking paradise where tourists can go to simply relax and admire one of God’s greatest creations.

Bicol Travel Guide: Things to do in Bicol, Luzon, Philippines

Bicol Regional Guide: A Brief History Of Bicol, Philippines

This land, cradled by mountains and kissed by the sea, has witnessed centuries of stories, from ancient folklore to pivotal moments in Philippine history. Its past is a tapestry of resilience, culture, and the unbreakable spirit of the Bicolanos. Let’s journey through the corridors of time to uncover the layers that make Bicol a region where every stone, river, and volcano has a story to tell.

Pre-Colonial Richness

A land of ancient societies.

Long before the Spanish galleons arrived on its shores, Bicol was a thriving expanse of barangays (villages) governed by local chieftains known as “datus.” It was a society rich in trade, agriculture, and artisan crafts, with a culture deeply rooted in the harmonious relationship between its people and the environment. The Bicolanos’ reverence for nature is encapsulated in their legends, such as that of Daragang Magayon (Beautiful Maiden), a tale that poetically narrates the formation of the Mayon Volcano.

The Spanish Era

The cross and the sword.

The arrival of Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century marked the beginning of a new chapter in Bicol’s history. The region became a frontier of Christian missionary efforts, leading to the establishment of some of the Philippines’ oldest churches, such as the Naga Metropolitan Cathedral and the Daraga Church. This era was also marked by resistance, with local heroes like Francisco Dagohoy leading revolts against colonial rule, illustrating the Bicolanos’ enduring spirit of independence.

The American and Japanese Occupation

Times of turmoil and resilience.

The American colonization and subsequent Japanese occupation brought significant changes to Bicol’s social fabric and economy. The region’s strategic location made it a battleground for guerilla warfare during World War II, a testament to the courage of its people. Post-war recovery was marked by the rebuilding of towns and a renewed focus on agriculture, setting the stage for Bicol’s modern era.

The Bicol of Today

A mosaic of progress and tradition.

In contemporary times, Bicol has emerged as a vibrant region that balances progress with the preservation of its cultural heritage. Its history is alive in the festivals that fill the streets with color, in the enduring faith of the Peñafrancia devotees, and in the resilient smile of every Bicolano. The region’s past challenges have only strengthened its community, making Bicol a place where tradition fuels the drive towards a bright future.

Mayon volcano and the church ruins in Bicol, Philippines

Bicol Top Attractions and Best Places to Visit in Philippines

Encompassing the narrow, most southern portion of the island of Luzon, the region of Bicol often gets passed over for the north of the island, or the isles of the Visayas. However, those determined to explore off the beaten track will have their curiosity rewarded, as this part of the Philippines is home to fantastic churches, paradise islands, and one of its most prominent volcanoes.

Start your sightseeing in Bicol Province by making a stop at the Basilica of Our Lady of Penafrancia . You might be confused why you are taking time out of your busy schedule to this church, as it appears to be rather modern (it was completed in 1982).

It is a noteworthy stop due to its long-time association with being a Marian (a sect of Christianity) pilgrimage site. On the grounds of this church, you will find a shrine which attracts devotees from across the Philippines and Asia. They come to see a unique image of the Virgin Mary, which was crafted in 1710. Within you’ll also find oil paintings of the Station of the Cross, so take time to check them out before heading on your way.

Those looking for older, aged Roman Catholic churches while travelling in Bicol will love what they find at Daraga Church . Completed by the Franciscans in 1772, this beauty shows the weathering one would expect for a structure which has withstood a tropical climate for centuries, yet its architectural touches remain easily identifiable and appreciated.

More Attractions

Built in the Churrigueresque style (a subset of Baroque architecture), its elaborate design will impress fans of European churches – suffice to say, if it was located there, it wouldn’t look out of place. Given its good looks and its superior views of the Mayon Volcano, try not to miss this attraction.

Not all churches in Bicol have survived the ages intact, as you will see during a tour of Cagsawa Ruins Park . Protecting what are the remains of a 16th-century Franciscan church, this park allows visitors to bear witness to the destructive power to the nearby Mayon Volcano.

An eruption by this feared mount in 1814 destroyed the town of Cagsawa and this place of worship for the 2nd and final time (Dutch pirates burned it to the ground in 1636), leaving behind a bell tower and several wrecked walls which are overgrown by jungle vines in the present day.

The gravity of this place and choice views of the Mayon Volcano make this place worth visiting despite an overabundance of souvenir shops and touts, so be brave and endure the onslaught on your way into the park.

Bicol Province is home to a number of fantastic islands, Caramoan included. Before catching a ferry to one of many islands off the coast, make time in your day to check out the Our Lady of Peace Grotto .

Defined by a gigantic statue of the Virgin Mary, it offers more than just an epic selfie opportunity – the views it offers of the oceans and isles offshore will make the sweaty climb to get the top worth the effort.

Other Cultural Attractions: Trip to Bicol, Philippines

Dominating the skyline through much of Bicol, the Mayon Volcano is easily this region’s most significant natural attraction. A destructive volcano which has laid waste to towns numerous times in its notorious past, climbing it can be a risky proposition at best (it last erupted in January 2018).

However, if threat levels are low enough, there are ATV tours which will take you as close as humanly possible to this smoking giant. Give it a go – you only live once!

Other Attractions

As mentioned earlier, there are a number of beautiful tropical islands one can visit while in Bicol. Make Matukad Island your first stop, as it boasts soft, white sand and an abundance of cliffs. Just offshore, there are a number of limestone karsts and sea stacks – while not as extensive as El Nido, it is a pleasant surprise for an island off the beaten track in the Philippines.

Lahos Island is another gem located off the coast of Bicol. Much smaller in stature than Matukad, it is known for a strip of sand which connects two husks of limestone overgrown by vegetation. Ideal as part of a day spent island hopping off this part of Bicol, its crystal clear water will make it tough for you leave this tranquil place.

Think you have to go to Dumaguete to go diving for whale sharks? Thankfully, the town of Donsol offers whale shark diving , negating the need to jump on a plane bound for the south of the Philippines.

As soon as you slip into the water off the coast of this town in Bicol, you’ll understand why so many travellers have this activity on their bucket list. Despite the fearsome name, whale sharks are gentle giants, making an encounter with them nothing short of magical.

Bicol Philippines: Ultimate Travel Guide 2024

Sharing is caring!

Bicol is the adventure capital of the Philippines, and is well known for its active volcanoes, tranquil whale sharks, secret beaches and spicy food. The destination is popular with Filipinos but fairly unknown to foreign tourists, so this travel guide acts as an introduction to the beautiful region of Bicol Philippines.

Where is Bicol located in the Philippines

The Bicol region is based in the southern part of Luzon, the largest island in the Philippine archipelago.

Bicol is a region made up of six provinces , Albay, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Sorsogon and the island provinces of Catanduanes and Masbate, and has its own language, Bikol , which is highly influenced by Spanish.

The largest city is  Legazpi , the capital of Albay and the Bicol Region is bounded by the Lamon Bay to the north, the Philippine Sea to the east, and the Sibuyan Sea and Ragay Gulf to the west.

The northernmost Bicol provinces of Camarines Norte and  Camarines Sur , are bordered to the west by the province of Quezon Philippines.

How to get to Bicol Philippines

Bicol can be reached by road or air. There are two main airports in Bicol, one in Naga, Naga Airport (WNP) and the other in Legazpi City, Legazpi Airport (LGP).

Both of these airports are serviced by major domestic carriers, including Philippines Airlines , Cebu Pacific and Cebgo airlines .

There are multiple flights a day between Bicol and other parts of the Philippines such as Cebu and Manila which is only a one hour flight away.

The distance by road from Bicol to Manila is 293 kilometres or 182 miles. The journey takes 8 to 10 hours by public transport from Manila, Cubao and Sampaloc.

Travel by private car takes about 6 to 7 hours from Manila to Legazpi City Philippines.

Best Time to Visit Bicol Region

As the provinces in Bicol Philippines are an underrated tourist destination there is no peak season (yet!) so it’s there’s no need to worry about avoiding the crowds.

Bicol Philippines has an all year round tropical climate , however the wet season is from July to January, when typhoons can be common.

April is the driest month of the year so a great time to visit, especially if you want to go island hopping in the Caramoan Islands .

If you would like to experience the festival culture that Bicol tourist spot is famous for, then check out the calendar here and plan your visit to fall during these times of the year.

Best Places to Visit in Bicol Philippines

Legazpi city in albay philippines.

The best tourist spot in Bicol is the majestic  Mount Mayon , which is found in Legazpi City , the capital of Albay.

Mt Mayon is 2,462 meters high and is the  world’s most perfectly formed volcano .

The active volcano can be seen from nearly anywhere in the city and most activities in Legazpi revolve around Mayon Volcano. Including hiking , ziplining and quad biking down the volcano !

Legazpi City is also home to Cagsawa Ruins , a 16th century church tower, and  Sumlang Lake , a water-sports haven with incredible views of Mount Mayon, both the ruins and the lake are popular Bicol tourist attractions.

Donsol in Bicol

Donsol is famous for being the whale shark capital of the world, and these huge fish can be seen all year round.

Boats leave daily from the Donsol Whale Shark Interaction Center, so if swimming with whale sharks is on your bucket list Donsol is the place to do it.

Other popular activities in Donsol include a firefly river tour , and scuba diving fun dives .

Naga City Camarines Sur Philippines

Whilst the rest of Bicol is famed for its nature and adventure, Naga City Philippines is the religious centre of Bicol.

Home to one of the most popular shrines in the Philippines, the Penafrancia Basilica Minore, is patterned after the Spanish shrine and is often visited by pilgrims and devotees.

Caramoan Island in Camarines Sur

The Caramoan Islands are the Philippines secret paradise.

This Asian hidden gem in Camarines Sur is often dubbed the next El Nido .

Spend your days, island hopping around the peninsula in search of white sand coves and limestone rocks and even look out for the filming location of the hit US TV show, Survivor .

Camarines Norte Philippines

The most popular spot in the Camarines Norte, is the  Catanduanes Islands , north of Luzon, which are a favourite amongst local surfers.

They are home to some of the most beautiful Bicol beaches, including Mamangal Beach , a completely untouched spot of paradise in the Catanduanes.

Another popular spot in the Camarines Norte is the city of Daet .

A cultural hotspot, home to numerous churches, monuments, and historical sites such as Parroquia de San Juan Bautista – one of the oldest churches in Bicol.

Where to Stay in Bicol Province

There are several good places to stay in Bicol, here are my recommendations for the different Bicol places to visit.

What is Bicol known for? Bicolano Food

The Bicol province is renowned for its spicy cuisine. Most Bicolano dishes contain, sili (hot chilli pepper) and gata (coconut milk) such as the most popular savoury dish, Bicol Express .

Locally, the Bicol Express is known as gulay na lada , and is made from ground pork, sili , baby shrimp, onion, garlic and other spices cooked in coconut milk.

Another popular Bicolano food dish is Pinangat , made from green  gabi  (taro) leaves wrapped around small pieces of fish, shrimp and/or pork.

Both dishes can be served with a vegetarian Bicol favourite, Laing, which is a chopped leafy green vegetable.

As for deserts, Legazpi is famous for its hot pink Chilli ice cream and Pili nut candies.

Festivals in Bicol City Philippines

Bicol is known for having some of the best festivals in the whole of the Philippines.

Some are religious, but others showcase the uniqueness of the Bicol Region.

  • In April, Masbate City holds the only rodeo in Asia, Rodeo Masbateño .
  • For the duration of May, Albay celebrates, Magayon Festival a month long festival which honours the beauty of Mount Mayon Volcano, which overlooks the city of Legazpi.
  • Also in May, is the 8 day long Sarung Banggi Festival , a colourful religious celebration dedicated to Potenciano V Gregorio’s love song ‘Sarung Banggi’.

Fancy some rock formations? You may then want to see Burobancaso Rock Formation located in a small island in Ticao. You can easily climb the rock formation to get a scenic 360-degree view of the island. It’s also nice to take a dip or stroll along the white sand beach.

Sorsogon: Bicol Region’s Freshest Tourist Destination

sorsogon

Sorsogon lies at the southernmost tip of Luzon in the province of Bicol. Dubbed as the gateway to the Southern Philippines , it’s the home of almost 800,000 hospitable Sorsogueños living with 14 municipalities and a city. Truly, a province surrounded by water. Ready yourself for a one-of-a-kind and rising eco-tourist destination in Bicol region.

Donsol Whale Shark

Sorsogon City is less than one and a half hour away from Legazpi. I don’t have any idea how exciting this Sorsogon trip could be. Fairly, when I hear the word Sorsogon the first thing that comes to my mind are the whale sharks of Donsol.

I had been part of many traveling groups and sadly, I hardly saw topics about this province. Evidently, Donsol is the most popular tourist destination in Sorsogon but I’m telling you, there are more reasons why your next destination should be Sorsogon

1. They Have a Hotel Which Isn’t Just a hotel, it’s a Destination!

Located in the heart of the city, Siama Hotel was our starting point in discovering the beauty of the province. Unlike any other hotels, Siama gave me a deeper connection with nature.

This boutique hotel is surrounded by tall coconut trees and lush garden. As soon as you enter their property you will instantly feel the detachment from the bustling part of the city.

The hotel is so quiet that you can hardly hear any noise. Truly, a perfect place for people who are looking for quality and relaxing vacation.

Check Rate and Availability

Hotel Lobby

The rustic, minimalist and contemporary design of Milo Naval; the owner of the hotel is one of the reasons why Siama is outstanding. It’s modern and yet you will feel that you are still connected with nature.

The receiving and dining area are cross-ventilated allowing air to flow easily. The walls are unpainted giving a more natural look. The objects are kept in the minimum making it so neat and the furniture are crafted from mahogany wood.

Siama Hotel Room

Did I mention that they have a big hammock over their swimming pool? The view is so instagrammable and absolutely the spot for your next profile picture.

Our room showcased how minimalist the owner is; the bed is comfortable and there’s no television to give you more time to unwind. Also, our room has easy access to their pool area. Wake up early and don’t miss the chance of hearing the birds humming while having your breakfast.

Siama Hotel

Siama Hotel is located at Sitio San Lorenzo, Bibincahan, Sorsogon City, Sorsogon, Philippines

2. be the first to discover the emerging surfing destination of gubat.

Surfers would really love to discover this raw, unspoiled, less crowded, uncommercialized surfing haven in Gubat, Sorsogon. From the moment we stepped out of our coaster, I could hear the rhythmic percussion of waves.

The beach is facing the Pacific Ocean and waves during this month (July) is ideal for beginners but I noticed that it’s bigger compared with the one in La Union. Locals said, for experienced surfers, the month of October – March is the best time to visit.

Gubat Sorsogon

It’s a long stretch of fine and gray-sand beach covered. There are no big resorts and party. If we will be given a chance to stay overnight, I can sense the chillax ambiance at night while having a drink.

Surfing - Gubat

How to Get There:

Coming from Sorsogon City, you can ride a jeep going to Gubat. From Gubat Town proper, catch a jeep going to Bulusan that passes by Rizal Beach or hire a tricycle that can bring you directly to Lola Sayong Surf Camp.

3. Their River Cruise with Firefly Watching is Enchanting

Your visit to Sorsogon will never be complete without trying Buhatan River Eco Adventure . It’s one of the newest attractions in the province founded and managed by the initiative of the people of Buhatan.

Buhatan River Cruise

I was expecting it to be like the river cruise that I had in Loboc, Bohol but it turned out to be different. This is more slow, calm, and relaxing. There was no buffet during the cruise, no band playing in the background, but I find it quite alright as it made the cruise more peaceful. The cruise can only take a maximum of 10pax.

Our rectangular, floating, bamboo cottage has a white cloth which serves as its roof. The chairs have white and soft cushions to sitting comfortable. During the cruise, we enjoyed different kinds of Pili Products and a juice made of ginger.

As we moved to our destination, which is a floating restaurant, I felt delighted to hear the story of Bayanihan (a spirit of communal unity and cooperation) to make Buhatan River Eco Adventure a success.

Buhatan River

People from the community help each other to plant mangroves, now its shoreline has lush vegetation. They clean and protect the river regularly and it created more jobs for the local.

After our delectable dinner, we tried to catch some shrimp using a square fish net that we throw on the river while waiting for the sun to set and started our cruise back to the starting point.

Buhatan River Cruise

The air became cool and the evening eats away all the colors and lights. Suddenly, there was a quick flicker and crackle of light, one at a time, too fast for the naked eye. Fireflies started to show up; warm glows that illuminated the night.

I can’t explain the feeling exactly; I just think it’s magical, bizarre, and enchanting. I badly tried to catch a good photo but it’s too dark and they are too small that my camera failed to capture their beauty. I would be forever thankful that I experienced this kind of adventure.

4. They Just Don’t Have a White Sand Beach – They Have a Pinkish White Beach!

While everyone goes crazy with fine white beach, people in Matnog, Sorsogon enjoy a pinkish white-sand beach. Matnog is the home of amazing aquatic species and incredible pinkish sand.

Sorsogon

We first visited Tikling Island , which reminds me of Islands in Britania, Surigao. It’s peaceful and there was only one nipa hut built on the island. The sand was mixed with small coral stones, the water was crystal clear and we were lucky to spot some wild boars roaming around. I hope they could keep the raw beauty of this island.

Tikling Island

Our next stop was my favorite; Juag Lagoon Marine Sanctuary . When I heard our guide said that it’s a good spot for diving and snorkeling, I immediately felt so ecstatic and would love to jump instantly. I never missed the opportunity to swim with fishes and they are incredibly big. At first, I was alarmed that they might bite me but sooner I enjoyed feeding them.

Juag Marine Sanctuary

The last part of our tour was beach bumming at Subic Beach , Matnog’s very own pinkish-white beach. Absolutely, one of the best beaches I visited.

It’s low season during July, I believe we are the only visitors during that time. Water was incredibly clear and has different shades of blue and green. Sand is powdery and sparkling. This is my definition of Paradise – isolated, beautiful, and tranquil.

Subic Beach

  • Coming from Manila by land you can take a bus bound to Matnog from Alabang, Cubao or Pasay. Look for bus companies like DLTB, Philtranco, or Penafrancia. Travel time is 14 hours. An alternate option is to take a bus bound to Samar, it will stop at Matnog Pier before boarding the ferry.
  • If you will fly from Manila to Legazpi, from the airport ride a tricycle and tell the driver to bring you at Daraga – Matnog bus terminal.
  • Alternatively, take a bus bound to Sorsogon City, then ride a jeep that can bring you to Matnog.

5. You Don’t Need to Fly out of the Country to Experience Switzerland

I felt like entering a different dimension when we entered the gate of Bulusan Lake National Park . No wonder because it’s nestled at the foot of an active Volcano.  The 1 km road from the gate up to the lake, which was surrounded by tall trees and plants was ravishing.

Bulusan Lake

The sun was about to set when we reached the lake. The beauty of Bulusan Lake, dubbed as the Switzerland of the orient made my jaw drop. Absolutely, the most beautiful lake I’ve ever seen in the Philippines. The lake was surrounded by lush green trees, the water was clean and green too.

There are different activities available in the park. we tried the canopy walk and kayaking. But the best part of our stay was our short snack break on the floating villa at the heart of Lake Bulusan, where locals served us delicious Pili delicacies while listening to local songs. Some had a relaxing massage too.

Floating Cabana

If you want to explore more, beyond the lake are several springs, hiking trails, and falls. You can coordinate with the management to do these activities.

You can take a tricycle from Irosin public market or wait for a Bulusan jeepney and alight at the Park entrance. From here, it’s a one-kilometer walk to the lake.

Sarung Banggi is a popular Bicolano song written by Potenciano B. Gregorio Sr. Sarung Banggi means one night or one evening ❤️

My 2 days tour to Sorsogon was truly not enough to experience and see everything that Sorsogon could offer. If I would summarize Sorsogon in a few words, it would be, “It has everything to satisfy your dream vacation.” Not to forget their delicious food, warm people, enthusiastic LGU, and community. ' src=

Wow! I mostly see reviews about Bora, Vigan, and those common places and it is my first time indeed to read an experience about sorsogon. Now this is indeed a travel destination, a must visit place! I am eyeing to visit Vigan but now, I am thinking twice about the former and Sorsogon.

' src=

That looks like so much fun! I have always wanted to go to a pink beach. And the tropical fish are amazing! I don’t surf myself but it would be fun to watch the expert surfers!

Your post made me want to go to Sorsogon soon! I love the boutique hotel you went to. I love that they don’t have tv. I believe that communing with nature and reading books or having conversations with family and friends are better ways to recreate and spend one’s vacation.

' src=

It’s nice to know that they have done so much already to enable more tourists to visit Sorsogon… In particular Gubat, Irosin and other nearby towns. I used to go there every other week but it was for business. Back then, tourists? What tourists? Even on the road we were always wary because of NPA.

' src=

The photos of the lagoon and the Siama Bote are enough to get me booking a visit there right away, haha! I think it’s best we go when the weather is more agreeable though. Thanks so much for shaken the different options for first-timers!

' src=

A Backpacker’s Guide to the Bicol Region: Albay, Catanduanes, CamSur & Sorsogon

diy backpacking guide to bicol region

Located in the southernmost part of Luzon island, the Bicol Region is famous for its whale sharks, pristine islands, breathtaking waterfalls , mouthwatering foods, friendly residents, and active volcanoes. With its breathtaking landscapes, underrated tourist attractions, cultural sites, and amazing historical discoveries, I must say that Bicol must be part of your bucket list when traveling around the Philippines.

As I wandered around the region for 6 days and 5 nights, I truly fell in love with its beauty. It has its own charm that differs from other regions or places that I have visited across the country. I have been dreaming of exploring and going backpacking around the Bicol Region for a long time, and I am so grateful that it has finally come true! Truthfully, it made me quite emotional as I was exploring the region. Going backpacking is one of my favorite parts of traveling across the region, which I haven’t done since the pandemic.

camarines sur island hopping tour

In this blog, find out why Bicol is a must-visit region in the Philippines as I walk you through some of the best places that it offers. Apart from the popular Mayon Volcano in Albay, there is so much more to see in the Bicol Region. Here’s an ultimate backpacking guide to the Bicol Region with a bonus of a sample itinerary and expenses.

Table of Contents

Where is the Bicol Region located?

The Bicol Region is designated as Region V and is located at the southernmost end of Luzon (the largest island in the Philippines). Albay, Sorsogon, Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte, Catanduanes, and Masbate are the six provinces that make up the region.

Legazpi is the largest city in the Bicol Region, which is the capital of Albay. Meanwhile, Camarines Sur is the largest province in the area, while Catanduanes Island is the smallest island province in the region. Locals from the Bicol region are called Bicolanos, whose mother tongue is the Bikol language, which falls under four major groups of language.

How to get to the Bicol Region?

There are two ways to get to Bicol: by air or by road. Legazpi, Naga, and Virac have their own airports. If you travel by plane, travel time is approximately one hour and fifteen minutes. Either way, you can reach the province by bus, which takes you around 10 hours or so.

By Air

From Manila to Legazpi, Sorsogon, and Virac, you can book a flight via Cebu Pacific, Philippine Airlines, or Cebgo Airlines.

From Manila, there are buses from Cubao or Pasay that travel to Bicol daily. Buses are bound for Legazpi, Naga, and Sorsogon.
