Hospitality and Tourism Management - Travel and Tourism Major

People in a travel agency desk

Credit credentials

A credit credential includes courses with post-secondary credit applied.

These credits will be used towards your specific program and may be accepted towards a credential at SAIT or a different post-secondary institution.

The credit credentials include a bachelor's degree, applied degree, diploma, certificate and post-diploma certificate.

Bachelor Degree

SAIT has bachelor's degree programs in business, construction, and hospitality and tourism management.

Bachelor's degrees are generally four-year programs, but you have up to 10 academic years to complete your courses.

Applied Degree

SAIT's full-time applied degree programs involve one year of study through classes and lab work followed by one year of directed studies in a workplace setting. This builds on the completion of a recognized two-year diploma, which you must have to be admitted to an applied degree program.

You then have seven academic years to finish your applied degree, starting from the day you begin the first course in that program.

At SAIT, over 40 full-time diploma programs cover a broad range of areas, from aircraft maintenance to travel and tourism.

Most diploma programs are completed in two years, though you can take up to seven academic years to complete the requirements.

Certificate

SAIT has several certificate programs in the sciences, health and trades.

These programs provide the essential skills to start a career but are shorter in length than SAIT's diploma programs - usually a year or less. However, you have up to five years to complete your program.

Post-Diploma Certificate

These programs build on skills developed through a diploma or degree program and combine classroom instruction with a workplace practicum.

They are often completed in a year or less.

Journeyperson

A certified journeyperson is recognized as a qualified and skilled person in a trade and is entitled to the wages and benefits associated with that trade. You must complete all apprenticeship periods and pass the exams to earn a journeyperson designation.

Non-credit credentials

A non-credit credential comprises courses and programs designed for professional or personal development.

Because these do not have post-secondary credits attached, they cannot be used towards any of the credentials above. We also cannot guarantee an external institute will accept these courses or credentials for transfer credit.

SAIT's non-credit certificates of achievement and completion are offered through Continuing Education and Professional Studies .

Certificate of Achievement

Certificates of achievement recognize the completion of a program that includes a formal evaluation of performance and a minimum of 144 (required and elective) course hours.

Certificates of achievement typically develop broader, complex skill sets. As of July 1, 2022, you have up to three years to complete the certificate. If you began these programs before July 1, 2022, you still have five calendar years to complete the program from when you began the first course.

Certificate of Completion

Certificates of completion recognize the completion of a program that includes a formal evaluation of performance and a minimum of 30 to a maximum of 143 course hours.

These certificates are shorter in duration than certificates of achievement and offer a focused education program. As of July 1, 2022, you have up to three years to complete the certificate. If you began before July 1, 2022, you will have five calendar years to complete the program from when you began the first course.

Professional Certificate

Program certificates recognize completion of a program that includes the formal evaluation of performance, and that is a minimum of one year in length.

These certificates have program-specific admission requirements.

Micro-credential

A micro-credential recognizes the completion of a non-credit course that includes a formal performance evaluation and verifies you have demonstrated specific competencies.

Micro-credentials focus on the mastery of specific skills. You receive a digital, shareable badge upon completing a SAIT micro-credential (SAITMicro).

Program length

Estimated program length if you study full-time (nine or more credits per semester.) Actual program length will vary based on the number of courses you are registered in and successfully complete per semester.

You must complete your credential within the timeframes listed below:

  • Applied degree: up to seven academic years to complete all courses.
  • Diploma: up to seven academic years to complete all courses.
  • Certificates: up to five academic years to complete all courses.

What to expect from a career in the Travel and Tourism Industry

The travel and tourism industry is growing exponentially, which makes an education from travel and tourism programs at Ontario colleges a hot commodity. You can take your skills in a number of directions, from management and administration to outdoor adventure and more.

If you’re interested in a global career with plenty of exciting career opportunities, here’s what you need to know.

Travel and Tourism Courses

While overview programs are plentiful, there are also a number of specialty options in Ontario college travel and tourism programs, including (but not limited to):

  • Business / Management.   Risk management, finance and   business skills , along with an overview of the industry and the latest tourism software, prepare students for management roles in all areas of hospitality.
  • Services.   Specializing in one area of the industry – such as flight services or guest relations – or acting as travel counsellor in all areas. Students receive an overview of the travel industry along with targeted knowledge in their chosen area.
  • Specialties.   Examining how one specific feature of a destination can influences tourism – for example, event planning or   culinary   culture. Again, students learn overall tourism industry skills along with their particular area.
  • Ecotourism.   Giving travel and tourism a back-to-nature spin. Students practice the various activities in nature tourism while learning leadership, rescue training, camping skills and nature identification.

General Travel and Tourism Program Requirements

Most travel and tourism programs require an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, including a grade 12 English credit. However, because of the diverse program spectrum, be sure to check individual requirements for each.

Most programs include field study so students can practice hands-on training in their area of choice. One of the highlights of travel and tourism programs is that global travel opportunities exist as part of the curriculum or as optional experiences.

Travel and Tourism Jobs and Salaries

Travel and tourism graduates can expect to find careers in the   hotel , resort, entertainment and travel industry, holding management, service tour guide and travel planning positions.

Graduates typically see lower starting salaries, between $23,000 and $28,000 per year, but salaries will likely increase with experience. Because of the diversity in the field, salaries for those with experience can be anywhere from $30,000 to $100,000 or more per year.

This program meets the highest Canadian standards for industry education. It is fast-paced and hands-on: you will work in a computer lab with access to industry software and a live reservation system. Combine this with a one-month practicum at program’s end, and you are highly employable immediately upon graduation.

You’ll take an in-depth look at the world’s most important tourist destinations and learn what motivates travelers to visit them. You’ll also develop an understanding of the evolving travel market and the technology used to document and sell North American and international travel. In just 13 months, you’ll learn the skills Canada’s travel industry demands most: communications, sales techniques, customer service, and automation.

To succeed in this career, you should welcome challenges and deadlines. Typically mature students fare better in this program than younger students. Communication skills, people skills, and a passion for sales are essential, as are superior organizational skills and a curiosity about the world. Your personal travel experiences are a definite asset.

Career Potential

Educated travel professionals are in high demand. Opportunities abound in everything from adventure tours and special interests to selling leisure packages and incentive travel. Graduates work as travel consultants, reservations agents, customer service representatives, sales representatives, and marketing managers. Throughout Canada and around the globe, MacEwan University grads can be found in a range of pursuits: booking scuba diving tours, escorting European coach tours, and arranging honeymoons in Hawaii or safari groups to Africa.

Co-op information

  • Co-op programs add value to your education. Earn money while you apply what you've learned in a real workplace environment. Visit Co-operative education for more information.
  • The College cannot guarantee co-op employment. All co-op students are required to conduct an independent co-op job search in addition to the supports and services provided by the Department of Co-op Education.
  • Students are responsible for their own transportation and associated costs in order to complete work term requirements. Work locations may not always be readily accessible by public transportation.
  • In order for a student to participate in a WIL experience/Co-op work term, students must be legally eligible to work in Canada.

Applying to the co-op stream

  • All applicants apply to the non co-op program. Students will be informed of the application deadline and process to apply for the Co-op Stream. Labour market conditions determine the number of co-op seats in optional co-op programs. Not every student who meets academic eligibility requirements will be admitted to the co-op stream.
  • To be considered for admission to the co-op stream, students are required to achieve a minimum 70% session weighted average, with no dropped or failed courses during the term that occurs two terms prior to the co-op work term.
  • International students will require work permits to utilize the co-op job board for job search and to accept employment. Students are currently experiencing longer than usual wait times for work permits. Please be advised that there will be no co-op program service fee refunds after the program withdrawal for refund date. Students that have not received their work permit and choose to remain in co-op after the program withdrawal for refund date do so at their own risk and will not be refunded. If you are concerned about receiving your work permit in time to achieve co-op employment, please discuss your situation with your co-op advisor as early as possible.
