Common Eating
A place to gather around food and conversation, 2023 manitoba fall suppers.
I know this always seems a little early, but I’m welcoming the return of fall and hoping that 2023 sees a return for many Manitoba Fall Suppers. Even though I’m no longer writing Dining with Donald , I still love promoting fall suppers.
Please feel free to include, in the comment section, any Manitoba Fall Supper you discover. Also, if you can’t make a Manitoba Fall Supper, please feel free to add free to add your favourite community dinner dish to the comment section.
There are several things I really like about fall suppers. They bring communities together. On some level they serve as social levellers. They help create and sustain traditions. Plus, every once in awhile they are a good excuse to go out and stuff yourself to the gills.
You will notice that I have a generous definiton of what constitutes a fall supper . Although it must include a meal. Just offering snacks doesn’t make the cut.
Covid really took a bite out of fall suppers, and it’s time we bite back. As always, this list will be a mix of typical fall suppers, along with some higher end suppers that serve as fundraisers for many great community organizations around Manitoba. These tend to dominate the early iterations of this post, as they have the resources and need to plan quite far ahead of the event.
So if you have a fall supper you would like added, let lme know. You can use this site or message me through the Common Eating Facebook page.

Manitoba communities working to keep fall supper tradition alive during the COVID-19 pandemic

WINNIPEG -- A crisp autumn wind is starting to blow in Manitoba, meaning the annual tradition of fall suppers will soon take place, but this year, they look a lot different.
A fall supper is often a necessity for small-town community centres and other small organizations, but the pandemic is forcing them to rethink the tradition.
Zhoda Community Hall, a small-town community centre, has been running a fall supper for 15 years.
With COVID-19 still prevalent in Manitoba, the tradition was almost cut short.
"We thought, how can we get people the dinner they rant and rave about all year without getting them close together," said Konrad Narth, a board member at Zhoda Community Hall.
The usually buffet-style dinner will now be for pickup only.
"You are going to come up pay for your meal and take a prepackaged meal," said Narth. "There's going to be a lot of people who enjoy getting out, even just for a drive to our fall supper."
For $15, those that make the trip out to Zhoda, Man. will get a plate of perogies, cabbage rolls, chicken, meatballs, corn, and ice cream.
According to Narth, the funds from the dinner play a vital role in keeping the hall open.
"Normally, the fall supper is one of the main fundraisers for the Zhoda Community Hall," he said.
"Like many other small-town community halls, they aren't jam-packed with rentals, so in order to keep the facility upkeep and running, people in the community need to host events like this."
The October 4 dinner will only be missing one aspect; the gathering of the community.
"People would come to fall supper to catch up with people they don't see all the time and now they won't have that," said Narth. "Just to do our part, we will be discouraging that."
CAN'T STOP KILLARNEY
Like Zhoda, back in July, Killarney United Church thought it was going to have to cancel its fall supper that's been running for almost two decades.
"We were thinking about cancelling earlier on, and then we got smart and thought how we can do this," said Merle Campbell, a co-organizer of the supper.
This year, the supper of turkey, dressing, potatoes, turnips, coleslaw, a dinner roll, and dessert will be for takeout only.
"We are taking pre-orders by October 1 and varying our times for pickup every 15 minutes," said Campbell.
The actual pickup date for the dinners, capped at 100 servings, is October 11.
UPCOMING EVENT Fall Dinner - There will be a pickup/takeout fall dinner . Sunday Oct 11th. Cost $15.00 ... Posted by Killarney United Church on Friday, August 14, 2020
Along with the cooks in the kitchen and three vegetable cookers in a separate trailer, the church is employing six additional people to pack and prepare the food for pickup.
At $15 a plate, the funds from cooking the home-style meal are very important to the church.
"Well, it's a very good fundraiser," noted Campbell, who said the money goes towards keeping the church running.
UKRAINIAN MUSEUM SUPPER
COVID-19 has put a damper on the Ukrainian Museum and Village out in the RM of Stuartburn.
The museum couldn't hold any of its regular outdoor festivals, concerts, or tours this summer.
Kelvin Chubaty, president of the Ukrainian Museum and Village Society, said the annual fall supper is even more critical this year.
"We are hoping to make some of the money back this way," said Chubaty.
Chubaty said the museum only decided to host a takeout version of its fall supper last month.
"Usually, we have a buffet-style table where everyone comes with a plate and they eat in the hall."
On September 6, the museum will be giving plates of fried chicken, perogies, cabbage rolls, carrots, and dessert out a takeout window.
The $15 charge will go towards keeping the Ukrainian Museum and Village running.
A CANCELLED DINNER
While some fall suppers are going ahead this year, not everyone can make it pandemic friendly.
Lisa Johnston, the head organizer for the La Salle Community Centre fall supper, said the community decided to cancel the supper this year.
"A lot of the food is prepared outside the community centre, so it just seems to not be a smart move to try and have it this year," she said.
Without the funds from the dinner, the community centre will feel the pinch.
"There will obviously be a financial impact for sure," said Johnston. "In that sense, it's definitely a disappointment."
Although sad, Johnston said cancelling is the right thing to do.
"It's been a long-standing tradition here in La Salle, so it's really disappointing when something like this can't go on," she said.
"The decision was made just to keep everyone safe. I just felt it was necessary because of the pandemic."
Johnston said she now worries people will forget about the supper, and they will lose volunteers when fall rolls around next year.

Pansy kicks off fall supper season
Advertise with us
Hey there, time traveller! This article was published 06/09/2023 (212 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.
It’s a tradition as old as homesteading on the prairies. As harvest nears the end, and people begin to prepare for another long cold winter, they gather to enjoy a fall supper, featuring traditional dishes and the yield from the land around them.
Today it’s become an essential fundraiser for innumerable community halls that simply couldn’t exist without the funds that come from hungry people, eager to share in the annual tradition.
In southeast Manitoba, close to a dozen of these suppers take place, beginning in early September and going until the end of October.
For years the Pansy Fall Supper has signaled the start to a series of suppers that take place in communities such as Gardenton, Woodridge, Middlebro, Dominion City, Friedensfeld, Emerson, Sundown, Ridgeville and Rosa.
Leanne Germain is the organizer of the Pansy event and she said it’s crucial to maintain the Pansy Hall.
“This is our major fundraiser of the year,” she said, explaining funds are used to pay for heating costs, taxes and infrastructure improvements.
Billed as a “Ukrainian smorgasbord”, the Pansy Fall Supper kicks off the season on Sunday, Sept. 10. More than 20 dishes are on the menu including the popular chicken, rice and bacon cabbage rolls, perogies and cream sauce, perishky, nalysnyky (cottage cheese crepes baked with cream and cinnamon), beetneks (bread bun wrapped with dill, onions and a beet leaf), pompushky (fluffy donut with prune filling, served warm with icing sugar) and pumpkin slice.
“Everything’s homemade on the menu. Everything’s made from scratch,” Germain said. “There are lots of volunteer hours that happen way before the actual date.”
The Pansy supper is also known for wild mushrooms, gathered by their volunteers.
“I don’t even know how many five-gallon pails I’ve picked, but I try to do at least 15 to 20 just to feed the capacity that comes here,” she said.
While close to 200 people live in the immediate Pansy area, their fall supper sees their population swell considerably.
“We are planning to prepare for 1,200 this year,” she said, adding in years gone by they’ve had as many as 1,600 guests.
Germain said fall suppers are something that brings people together.
“People want to be together,” she said. “I think families want to come and sit and enjoy a meal together and they appreciate all the hard work that we’ve put into the meal so they can just come and celebrate a time with their families.”
Pansy’s fall supper, like many others appeals to people from far outside the area, attracting buses and groups from Winnipeg and guests from across Canada.
Prices do vary between fall suppers with Pansy charging $22 per adult, $10 for children ages 7-13 and six and under free. Like most, only cash is accepted.
The Pansy Fall Supper will be served from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 10 at the Pansy Hall.
A list of fall suppers in the Southeast can be found in The Carillon. To view fall supper listings from across the province search for Manitoba Fall Suppers on Facebook.

It's that wonderful time of the year when the sweaters come out, the boots come on and the air is crisp and cool. That's right, it's fall, the trendiest and most pumpkin-spiced fueled season of the year. It's also the time for corn mazes, fall suppers, hot chocolate and quiet road trips from Winnipeg. We love fall day trips and thought one through some of Manitoba's cute and quaint Francophone towns would be the perfect way to celebrate the season.
First is a stop in Winnipeg's French neighbourhood, St. Boniface, to fuel up for the day. Head to La Belle Baguette for brunch of croque monsieur and a slice of quiche. Of course, finish up with a maple, lemon or chocolate ganache tart or a chocolate eclair. Wash it down with a latte, cappuccino or hot chocolate. If it's sunny, be sure to enjoy their patio surrounded by leafy trees and the historic homes of the area. Once you're full, pack up with an assortment of rustic baking for the road. Save time for a short stroll through the neighbourhood - the nearby Université de Saint Boniface campus and tree-lined Taché Avenue (with it's views of the Red River) is particularly lovely this time of year.
La Belle Baguette, St. Boniface
Amaze in Corn, St. Adolphe
St. Adolphe
Next head south of Winnipeg to the town of St. Adolphe and to everyone's favourite fall destination, A Maze in Corn . This family-friendly attraction boasts a winding corn maze, pumpkin barn, pony rides, hay rides, petting zoo, a hay bale climbing structure, and for the very adventurous, a zip line. Rubber boots for the corn maze are highly recommended. They also offer a haunted forest close to Halloween that will scare the boots right off you. Pro tip: the pumpkin barn, which opens early October, is the perfect spot to get some truly Insta-worthy fall photos of your little ones.
In the winter, this innovative attraction is also home to the world's largest snow maze so there is reason to return in every season!
St. Joseph, Manitoba
About 75 kilometers from St. Adolphe is the cute town of St. Joseph. Our first stop should be at Museé St. Joseph Museum for a step into the past. Spanning 19 acres with 24 buildings to visit, the museum is a reconstruction of a pioneer village including a school from the late 19th century, a blacksmith shop, post office, a general store and much more to explore. The collection features antique tractors and houses one of the largest collections of stationary engines in western Canada. Be sure to check out the Laurent Fillion camera collection to see how this ubiquitous tool has transformed from its earliest forms to what it is today in little over a century.
If you've timed your visit on the right day, after working up an appetite sightseeing all afternoon, stop in at the St. Joseph's Fall Supper. Fall suppers are a long standing Manitoba tradition where communities, churches and various organizations come together to serve hearty, home-cooked food in a convivial atmosphere. Attending a fall supper in a French community offers up some classic dishes like tourtière served along side roast beef, pickled beets, hominy corn (hint: it's not really corn), and all kinds of sides. The dessert tables servies no less than eight different kinds of pie from pumpkin to rhubarb, cheesecakes, puddings, jello, turtle pie and even bacon toffee, proving that even a fall supper isn't immune to food trends. The food is amazing and the atmosphere is always friendly and welcoming. St. Joseph's fall supper is both a social event and way of life.

I follow Manitoba Fall Suppers on Facebook. Dining with Donald keeps track of some of them. Orest Cogitarium has the most comprehensive list, but I'm not sure if he's still tracking them (he has a map usually, but I don't see one, but I'm on my phone) In my experience, Pansy has the best, but get there early because the line ups are long.
