What are travel startups?

Travel startups today are largely companies that lean on innovation to get noticed in a saturated landscape. Because we’re more reliant than ever on our devices, many of the companies on this list have tech that will drive tourism across the globe.

Whether by reducing carbon emissions, offering health insurance by phone, or making it easier to split costs, travel startups are tackling the small and big issues that stop travelers from fully committing to a trip.

What does the future of the travel industry look like?

The future of the tourism industry will be controlled by everything from global emissions to public health. However, based on the most popular startups today, one of the major trends is based on how people book their travel and how the details are managed. Travel is likely to become more customizable, more affordable, and less damaging to the environment.

What are some travel startup ideas?

Travel startup ideas are often born from personal experiences that people have with their own bookings. So maybe you have a difficult time scheduling a trip on a regular weekend. This leads to an idea that helps vacationers travel without having to take vacation time from work.

Or maybe you take your inspiration from global headlines. If gas prices rise drastically in your area, you can start an app that helps people take a staycation they’ll never forget.

How do you start a travel startup?

Beginning a travel startup will mean sketching out a business model with details about how you’ll monetize your idea and how much capital you’ll need to get started. You’ll need to know what kind of staff you’ll need, how much you can pay them, and what kind of collaboration will be needed to hit your milestones. From there, you’ll likely need to approach investors and secure funding.

Traveling between worlds in the metaverse

5-MINUTE READ

travel tech in usa

  • The next wave of technology disruption driving the future is here, bringing new technologies and worlds of experiences.
  • Over the next decade, ambitious travel players will shape new physical and digital realities and transform their businesses.
  • Travel companies need to prepare now to understand how these emerging technologies are critical for future growth and competitiveness.
  • How can travel companies successfully navigate uncertainty about the future, with blurred boundaries between humans and machines?

Welcome to the “Metaverse Continuum”

The metaverse is evolving the next generation of the internet technologies and creating boundaryless opportunities. Think of it as a continuum, spanning the spectrum of digitally enhanced worlds, realities and business models.

Expect to see it touch all facets of every business, from consumer to worker and across the enterprise; from reality to virtual and back; from 2D to 3D; and from cloud and AI to extended reality, blockchain, digital twins, edge technologies and beyond. In 2022, this way of life seems surreal, but the Metaverse Continuum is on its way and companies need to prepare now.

Next-generation traveler experience

The Metaverse Continuum enables people to immerse themselves within a universal shared experience that connects our real world to a fully virtual one—and everything in between.

The Metaverse Continuum is already transforming travel companies in five ways, changing...

  • How travel companies interact with customers
  • How work is done
  • Which services travel companies offer
  • How they make and distribute them
  • How they operate their organizations

Travel Technology Vision 2022 trends

In the Travel Technology Vision 2022 report, we explore how today’s technology innovations are becoming the building blocks of our collective future. These four trends investigate the entire continuum, from the virtual to the physical, across humans and machines alike, identifying where ambitious travel companies can find rich opportunities by uprooting themselves from today and planting themselves firmly in the future.

WebMe: The internet is being reimagined as metaverse, and Web3 efforts transform the underpinning and operation of the virtual world.

The Programmable World: Control, customization and automation are being immersed into the world around us, making the physical as programmable as the digital.

The Unreal: As AI-generated data and synthetic content convincingly mimic what is “real,” authenticity is the new north star.

Computing the Impossible: A new generation of computers is solving some of the world’s most intractable problems leading to one of the biggest technological disruptions of our time.

RELATED: Why the metaverse (really) matters for travel.

Now is the time to shape the future of travel technology

We are at a crossroads. Not only because there are new technologies to master, but rather that competition in the next decade will require much more than technical skills and innovative strength. Travel companies will need a truly competitive vision. A clear vision of what the future worlds will be like and a vision of where the travel business needs to go to thrive. Technology is pointing us in the right direction. Everything else is in your hands.

The metaverse continuum is waiting for you.

Skift Travel Tech 250

Mapping the travel tech ecosystem: skift travel tech 250.

One of Skift’s stated aims is to demystify and dejargonify the travel industry.

As part of that aim we are launching our first ever travel industry mapping project, what we’re calling Skift Travel Tech 250 . These are the 250 travel tech companies that are shaping the modern day travel experience.

We have visualized them in a cluster map below for you, with the traveler at the center of it all, and companies categorized along where they fall in the full travel cycle.

We also recognize that the travel industry is in constant flux, with new brands and disruptors coming on line all of the time. The design we chose for this visualization is exactly that – a snapshot of what the industry looks like today.

You will also notice that the focus in this map is on consumer-facing travel tech companies and one level deep on the B2B side. That is where we cut it off for this map, and will tackle the full B2B part of the travel tech sector in a future project.

The size of the bubbles denoting companies in the sector is based on a proprietary algorithm developed by tech advisory firm Brand New Matter in association with Skift. The 250 companies were chosen from a much larger pool of companies in the travel tech space based on their market position as it stands today in 2016. For each of the company, we collected data in three areas: Traffic, Skift Editorial Recognition and Social Credibility. We weighted each area separately and combined all to find the TSR - Total Skift Ranking .

We do realize that this map is not perfect: we may have missed some companies, and many companies in the complex travel tech sector operate across multiple distinct categories.

In the map below, click to zoom into the sectors and companies.

Talent and Skills

/ report, dream destinations and mobility trends, decoding global talent 2024.

By  Jens Baier ,  Orsolya Kovács-Ondrejkovic ,  Tobias Zimmermann ,  Pierre Antebi ,  Susan Gritzka ,  Sacha Knorr ,  Vinciane Beauchene ,  Carmen Marquez Castro ,  Zoë McFarlane ,  Anja Bates ,  Julie Bedard , and  Ashish Garg

This is the first report in a series analyzing the work preferences of global talent in 2024 .

travel tech in usa

Ten years ago, we launched the Decoding Global Talent series of reports, excited to watch trends in the wide world of work. We never imagined how powerfully and rapidly various global forces—the pandemic, remote work, geopolitics, GenAI , and more—would disrupt work. Nevertheless, the turmoil of the past decade has had little impact on the enduring appeal of talent mobility.

Take Anne Granelli. We first interviewed her in 2014, when Anne, a biomedical researcher and native of Sweden, was living and working in New Delhi with her family, after a stint in Canada. “We really like the international atmosphere,” she shared then. “It’s a great opportunity to get different views and learn a lot.” We’ve continued to follow her story. Now 53, she is living and working in Dubai for a US-based medtech company. She recently observed, “Life is too short not to explore all the options.”

The options for working abroad are plentiful—as are the workers who are ready for new opportunities.

Employers and nations stand to benefit as well. But to reap the rewards, they must understand the preferences of mobile workers, which entails answering several key questions:

  • How have the top target destinations shifted?
  • Why do people aspire to move to specific countries?
  • What can future employers and the governments of destination countries do to court global talent?

About the Decoding Global Talent Series

  • The Decoding Global Talent series is the largest data source on the mobility preferences of workers globally. Our cumulative data set comprises almost 900,000 responses on where and how people want to work around the world.
  • It is a collaboration of BCG, The Network, and The Stepstone Group.
  • The current report explores trends in workforce mobility, including willingness to move abroad for work, and provides an updated ranking of top destination counties and cities.
  • In this year’s survey, we explored a new dimension of global mobility: the reasons why respondents favor particular destinations. We asked survey participants how they perceive certain countries and why they think they would be happy in those destinations.

Where Do People Want to Go?

In 2023, Australia, which has been steadily rising through the ranks since we initiated this series, finally topped the list of desirable country destinations .

travel tech in usa

Australia became more attractive to respondents from Asian countries, and it rose in popularity among respondents from North America, Africa, and several European countries, including the UK and Ireland. Amid an economic boom as the world emerged from the worst stages of the pandemic, Australia has been attractive to talent from abroad, offering job opportunities, visas, and great quality of life.

Overall, though, the upper echelon of the rankings hasn’t changed much. Canada and the US are still top-three talent destinations because of the attractive economic opportunities they offer and because they are, simultaneously, English-speaking countries and global melting pots.

The most dramatic change we found in the rankings was Spain’s reemergence among the top ten, after becoming less attractive during the pandemic (the country was hit hard early on).

Why Do People Choose a Specific Country?

We dug deeper to find out how people who are willing to move for work choose a destination, leaning on definitions and rankings from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development in its 2023 Indicators of Talent Attractiveness report.

We looked at extrinsic factors —characteristics of countries. We found that one consistent, primary consideration supersedes individual country brands: the quality of job opportunities. Nevertheless, a few countries benefited from another prominent consideration: quality of life .

And we looked at intrinsic factors —practical considerations related to the individuals themselves. Overall, speaking the primary language or languages of the destination country matters a lot, especially among respondents who favor English-speaking countries. Personal recommendations from acquaintances who have experience with the destination country make a difference, too, as does having a diaspora of the same nationality in the target destination.

What Can Employers and Governments Do?

People’s interest in moving abroad for work is significant, as are the benefits for employers and national and local economies. We recommend that businesses and governments target several key strategic areas and offer mobile talent advice along each step of the journey that they will be taking.

" "

It’s no accident that we start with recommendations for employers...

But governments play a strong enabling role, so we have recommendations for them too...

" "

  • Forecast talent needs, and craft an international location strategy.
  • Refine the EVP to resonate with new audiences.
  • Boost international recruitment channels.
  • Offer extensive relocation support.
  • Onboard new arrivals—and their families.
  • Ensure an inclusive and international work environment.

" "

  • Take a strategic approach to managing immigration.
  • Boost the country brandwith a focus on jobs.
  • Build bilateral partnerships and programs.
  • Fast-track talent with critical skills.
  • Make immigration user-friendly.
  • Promote labor market inclusion.
  • Promote societal inclusion.

People who have moved abroad for work—or aspire to—do so for a variety of practical reasons. But there’s also a sort of joie de vivre that takes hold among mobile talent. Patrick Byrne, a US-born lawyer now in Spain, shared with us, “I love the idea of adventure. Just the idea of living somewhere else, trying something new, experiencing another culture. That alone is an amazing thing.”

Employers and nations that tap into such positive energy, from the millions of workers with mobile aspirations, will gain a major competitive advantage and source of growth.

7 hikers arrested for attempting dangerous Hawaii hike before its permanent removal

travel tech in usa

People are flocking to Hawaii’s arguably most infamous – and illegal – hike , the Stairway to Heaven, before it is removed for good. Arrests and dozens of citations have immediately ensued.

Just two weeks after the announcement of the infamously dangerous Oahu hike’s permanent removal, the Honolulu Police Department on Thursday reported that seven hikers had been arrested for trespassing and 56 had been cited. Over the weekend, around 60 warnings were issued.

Second-degree trespassing is considered a petty misdemeanor and requires a court appearance, HPD said.

The hike, also known as Haiku Stairs, has been illegal since 1987. Nevertheless, hopeful hikers have continuously trespassed – while causing disturbances – through residential neighborhoods and private property to ascend the nearly 4,000 World War II-era steel stairs for a panoramic view of Oahu. Due to the inclement weather and steepness of the hike, it’s not uncommon for people to have to be rescued, often by helicopter.

The City and County of Honolulu announced on April 10 that the aging stairs would be removed forever in a project Honolulu Major Rick Blangiardi called “long overdue.”

Residents who live by the hike said more people than ever before are trespassing onto their property to access the hike since the announcement, according to KHON2 .

“Be good people and understand it’s not about you and don’t be selfish,” said District Four Commander Maj. Randall Platt in a press conference on Monday, according to KHON2. “Think about what you’re doing to the work people, the environment, it’s all of thise, tracking invasive species in on top of putting the work people at risk on top of putting yourself at risk, it’s really not pono (righteousness) is really what I want to say, it’s not right.”

Ian Schuering, spokesperson for the City and County of Honolulu, told USA TODAY the entire stairway is considered an active work site and extremely hazardous for anyone attempting the hike.

HPD reminds the public that it is “illegal and unsafe to access Haiku Stairs.”

As crews are currently preparing the stairs for removal, the first set of stair modules will be flown off the mountain within the next couple of weeks, Schuering said.

How I’d Spend $1,000 at Home Depot

Portrait of Erin Schwartz

We initially published this story as an exclusive for our newsletter subscribers on April 22, 2024, but we liked it so much we’re putting it up on the site, too. If you’d like to sign up for the Strategist newsletter,  you can do so here .

Welcome to  How I Pick My Picks  — a kind-of-regular newsletter series where we check in with the Strategist staff on the stuff they’re using day to day, the products they’re testing for stories, and the things their friends and family won’t stop asking them about. Consider it a peek into the always whirring brain of a Strategist writer. Today, we talk to home-décor, gardening, and clothing-care writer  Erin Schwartz .

I’m  a home-décor writer  at the Strategist, so I’m always tweaking things in my apartment. I don’t like to spend a ton of money on these projects — in part because  I’m a renter  and want to be able to pack everything up and move it someday and because the cost of living in New York has gotten insane. If I want cool  furniture , I need to get creative with what I already have or can find for cheap.

My current  home-DIY  project is a  mirror . Months ago, I found a Craigslist post for “PORTHOLE with many uses, wooden, sturdy, beautiful,” listed for $7 with a few grainy photos of a roughly four-foot square of honey-colored plywood with a large circle cut out of the center. I had to buy it. (The seller, it turns out, was moving to Florida; his husband had decorated their Hell’s Kitchen apartment in a nautical theme years ago, lots of blues and grays and two custom-cut wooden portholes.)

I’m using four metal brackets to sandwich a piece of mirror between the porthole and the wall — the porthole becomes a way to fake a circular mirror, a similar theory to  a popular Gustaf Westman mirror  that nests a rectangular mirror inside a custom-cut wiggly wooden frame. Plus, doing things with my hands — both home DIYs and tending to my two-dozen-ish  houseplants  — is a good break from working with text on screens all day. It’s like crop rotation of the mind; if something I do often depletes one resource, I look for a hobby with different requirements to balance it out. (And the Craigslist adventures are worth it alone.)

What’s the product that friends and family always ask for your advice on?

A lot of people ask me for advice on altering and repairing clothing, which I love to talk about. When in doubt,  add a patch , and check out the book  Creative Mending,  by Hikaru Noguchi , for knit-mending ideas. If you’re in New York City, I’d also recommend  Eva Joan Repair .

The one thing I recommend to everyone is getting a soft tailor’s tape measure. They’re  $3 on Amazon , but you can also find them at any craft store or dollar store. It will unlock a world of great-fitting clothing to buy online and dramatically reduce the number of things you have to return because they fit weird. Most vintage sellers list measurements, but, if not, it’s normal etiquette to send the seller a message asking for specific dimensions. (As a short king, I often ask for the sleeve length, shoulder width, and total length.)

GDMINLO Soft Tape Measure

Do you have any strongly held opinions that changed after testing?

I’ve become sort of obsessed with what I call “solved products,” categories in which there’s already an item on the market that’s affordable, reliable, and would only get worse with tweaks or upgrades. (The  Lodge   cast-iron pan  is a classic solved product; ditto  Felco   garden pruners .) I used to think every category had its solution, even if it hadn’t been invented yet. But when working on  our article on bar carts , I realized that it’s more fun when that’s  not  the case. I talked to a ton of drinks and design people about bar carts, and each of them had a different answer, some of which weren’t even furniture; gin distiller Morgan McLachlan uses the top of her piano. I think we will never solve bar carts, and that’s okay — beautiful even.

F-2 068780 Classic Manual Hand Pruner,

What’s the least amount of money you should spend on, for example, a dining chair?

If you’re buying new, I’d say you can get a pretty solid dining chair for $60 — that’s the price of the  Article Svelti , my  best-in-class pick — if you’re buying vintage or secondhand, $20, or free! You can find great free furniture on the street or on Craigslist. Just look for something sturdy and trust your intuition.

Article Svelti Chair

What are you currently testing and researching?

I’ve been deep in a quilt hole for the past week — I love all the different things a quilt can be made of and used for. While trying to ID some patchwork-quilt patterns, I found this great resource from Michigan State University called  the Quilt Index , which has been online since 2003.

What’s the last thing you purchased?

I bought a few things at the Baserange archive sale, which had some incredible deals;  I mentioned it to deals editor Sam Daly  because I’ll never gate-keep a good sale. I got a  knit polo  and one of the  brand’s lettuce-edged long-sleeve tees  with a yawning hole just south of your right nipple. The shirt wants to ride up, which is why, I imagine, it was on sale. But since I got top surgery six months ago, I am going through the canon event of wearing a ton of artsy nipple-baring tops, so it’s perfect for me.

Baserange Puma Yumco Long Sleeve

What’s the most expensive product you own?

My  sofa  and  coffee table . They’re secondhand  Gae Aulenti for Knoll  that I got from Aran Simi, a.k.a.  The Fetish Priest , a vintage seller who is incredible at historicizing his stock and is just a really nice person. I got a good deal in exchange for being able to pick it up ASAP — it was about $2,100 for both the three-seater sofa and the coffee table. It was worth it; both the couch and table are well made and durable, with a heavy metal frame. I’m still kind of mystified that I found it at a price I could afford. Thinking about anything happening to my couch and table is the only reason I have renter’s insurance.

Lounge Sofa by Gae Aulenti for Knoll International, 1976

If you had to spend $1,000 at Home Depot, what would you buy?

I’d get a  Makita drill  and a  jigsaw , a  shop vac , some  limewash paint , a  36-inch square panel of mirror  for the porthole thing, and some  oriented strand board (OSB)  for a shoe rack I’m working on.

Makita 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless Compact 2-Piece Combo Kit (Driver-Drill/Impact Driver)

What are some open tabs on your computer right now? What’s on your list but you can’t bring yourself to buy it just yet?

I keep my shopping list on Airtable to avoid tab clutter (here’s a  link ). Some things I wish I could justify buying right now: a  latex polo shirt  from British company Libidex in the “translucent natural” color (I picked up its button-down shirt last year, but it didn’t fit right, so I resold it on Depop; I’m hoping the polo will fit better), an  undyed wool rug  from Hook & Loom, and a  photo-printed-fire pillowcase  from the brand Serapis.

The Strategist is designed to surface the most useful, expert recommendations for things to buy across the vast e-commerce landscape. Some of our latest conquests include the best acne treatments , rolling luggage , pillows for side sleepers , natural anxiety remedies , and bath towels . We update links when possible, but note that deals can expire and all prices are subject to change.

In this first ever announcement of MICHELIN Keys in the United States, hotels in Atlanta, California, Chicago, Colorado, Florida, New York, and Washington DC were eligible for the distinction. This announcement of the most outstanding hotels in the country comes four years into a comprehensive refresh of our hotel selection. The MICHELIN Guide now includes over 5,000 hotels across the world, and not a single one is simply a room for the night. These are places that significantly add to your experience as a traveler, each vetted and judged excellent in five categories: architecture and interior design, quality and consistency of service, overall personality and character, value for the price, and a significant contribution to the guest experience in a particular setting. Which brings us back to the Keys. The culmination of countless hours of evaluation by our team of experts, the Key hotels below represent the highlights of our broader selection. Like the MICHELIN Stars for restaurants, the MICHELIN Keys are our most outstanding hotels. Expect: The highest luxury and impeccable design in Soho, Midtown, and the Financial District. Within the small club of Three Key hotels in the United States, four make their home in New York City. The Aman New York (Midtown) and Casa Cipriani (the Financial District) both make use of glamorous Beaux Arts buildings, the former a gold-crowned skyscraper in Midtown, the latter a glamorously restored ferry terminal at the very southern tip of Manhattan. Each is a refuge: an elegant, painstakingly designed escape from bustling city life. Meanwhile, two Firmdale hotels round out the list of Three Key hotels in New York City. Each is a quintessential example of the style and execution of the group’s co-owner and interior designer, Kit Kemp. Click the links here to explore the whirl of colors and collage of art that define the Crosby Street (Soho) and the Whitby Hotel (Midtown). Also read: Every Three Key Hotel in Paris

Jewels on the Coast: Up and Down California

Its sheer breadth of size and variety means it’s no surprise to announce California as the state with the most Key hotels in America. Here, we’ll point you towards coastal gems like the sublime architectural achievements in Big Sur ( Post Ranch Inn and Ventana ), beachside luxuries in Santa Monica (in particular: the newly opened Georgian ), and wine country favorites like SingleThread and the Madrona . What we love: how each one of these hotels opens the door to the very best of their locations — and gives us a look at each setting through fresh eyes.

The Chicago Athletic Association — Chicago, Illinois

Across America: The Golden Age of Celebrity

Our French Keys bask in the tradition of ancient vineyards, stone chateaus, and historic palaces. In the United States, we see a different tradition. In Los Angeles, places like Chateau Marmont , the Paramour Estate , Sunset Tower , and the Charlie date back to guests and residents as illustrious as Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe. These are spaces that play ingeniously with their history, even as they forge ahead with cutting-edge amenities and experiences. But it’s not just California. New York’s historic artist hotspot, the Hotel Chelsea , once hosted Bob Dylan and Andy Warhol. Today, it decorates every space with art donated by former residents. Look too to the Chicago Athletic Association , a former member’s club for 20th century business magnates and athletes — now among the city’s most impressive and vibrant hotels.
