While some have chosen to block or hide customers right to refund, others are getting creative – giving passengers a reason to help keep the airlines cash flowing. Aer Lingus kicked it off with a 10% boost to your ticket value, and now Virgin Atlantic is adding a gamified element, with unique offers for each type of ticket, if you go for the voucher.

For European airlines, the rules are quite simple. If your flight is cancelled by the airline, you are entitled to a full refund. Obviously, in a time of crisis, the airlines would love for customers to take the voucher option, for future travel.

If you are comfortable enough financially to do so, it can be a nice way to support an airline through tough times, if you’re a fan.

a couple of men standing in front of a large airplane

The airline has quietly rolled out a series of incentives to keep customers from withdrawing cash, including upgrades, extra miles and even money to spend at the airport. Passengers are receiving offers based on their current booking class. One reader messaged this morning to note their booking in economy was offered…

  • an upgrade to economy delight
  • 4,000 bonus miles per person, per flight
  • £25 voucher to spend at the airport

a seat with a screen on it

To get passengers back into the skies later this year, rock bottom fares are expected, and having an upgrade, extra miles and other perks is valuable, particularly if you can find the same fare, or better yet, one even lower!

It’ll be really interesting to see what sort of offers are being dished out for Premium and Upper Class, so please leave a comment with the offers you receive! Passengers will always remember how they were treated during these times, and it’s nice to see another airline taking a positive approach to hard times.

Curious who’s been naughty, and who’s been nice with refunds? Here’s the master list .

This is amazing

Not buying Virgin Atlantic is one of the good guys……….they have refused to answer my request to cancel a mileage ticket on ANA and return the miles. It is ridiculous to keep saying only if my flight is within 72 hours………..no more miles transfers to Virgin for me!

It would be nice if they could simply be transparent upfront. Navigating the crap virgin Atlantic website is constantly infuriating. They just have some generic “we are here to help” rubbish on their site.

Unless Richard Branson puts a lot more than 250 million into the airline it’s looking like they will be in administration within 3 months. I am already thinking about cashing out my points stash to Eurostar.

Is Virgin Atlantic obliged to notify me when I become entitled to a voucher (i.e. have spent over £19k on a Virgin Atlantic + credit card? ) I passed this mark several months, ago, but heard nothing at the time or since. Also, does the entitlement to this voucher expire, and if so, when?

Sorry, that should read £10k on my previous post

Could I use the balance of my Virgin Atlantic coupon to book another flight?

I’d certainly think so.

Today I redeemed a travel voucher for an upper class return ticket that was meant to fly in January. Received my travel voucher and an extra £240 per ticket as a gift.

On Jan 16, 2020 I booked a flight with Virgin Atlantic for October, 2020. San Francisco to LHR non stop. Booking reference: DZ3PYT.

The flight was cancelled by Virgin Atlantic due to Covid. As the same event for which I had planned the trip has been rescheduled I have reserved new flight for 26 Aug. 2022. Booking reference CIIXLV . Can I still apply the $921, or can I have a refund for the cancelled flight?

I paid $941

travel voucher terms and conditions virgin atlantic

Are there terms and conditions attached to the credit?

It may seem obvious (and perhaps you have already done so) but have you asked Virgin Atlantic? I think they will be the best people to answer redemption questions.

If still struggling you could try posting over at http://www.v-flyer.com as there are VS staff and regular flyers on there.

terms and conditions of the voucher are on their website https://help.virginatlantic.com/gb/en/contact-forms/travel-voucher.html

' class=

The format to use an existing voucher is no longer on any Virgin websites

As already said, contact VS and get it on an Official basis - I would email them so you get the answer in writing.

Many Thanks for your reply. We contacted Virgin on several occasions but using the Upper class voucher, there was only an upper class out and economy back.

How to book companion reward seats with Virgin Atlantic

Image of a couple being served a drink in Premium Economy of a Virgin Atlantic Flight.

If you've booked your next flight, or you're looking to book one, and you want to take your favourite person with you, you can do just that by spending your Virgin Points.

With so many sublime destinations to travel to with Virgin Atlantic , why not experience them with someone else? Whether you want to shop ‘til you drop and explore ‘til your feet hurt in New York , or chase the sunshine to Barbados , Virgin Atlantic has it all.

Badshahi Mosque in Pakistan

You can book an Economy Classic, Premium or Upper Class companion seat for a loved one, so learn how to do it, and get globe-trotting with a special someone.

How to earn a companion reward seat

Virgin Atlantic offers three main types of Companion Rewards:

Standard Companion Seats – this permits a companion to travel with a Flying Club member at a preferential points rate plus taxes, fees and surcharges.

Gold Renewal Companion Reward – this allows a companion to travel points free, however taxes, fees and surcharges are payable.

Credit Card Companion Reward – as part of the Virgin Atlantic Reward and Reward + Credit Card, a companion can travel points free, but taxes, fees and surcharges are payable. You can earn a companion reward if you spend £20,000 in a year on the Virgin Atlantic Reward Credit Card, or £10,000 in a year on the Virgin Atlantic Reward+ Credit Card.

You, as the Flying Club member, need to travel on the same flight as your companion, whoever that may be. If you want to upgrade, you can with Virgin Points or money.

However, the person you’re travelling with can only be upgraded if you pay with money, not points – provided there is space in the cabin. You’ll get a discounted rate (plus taxes, fees and surcharges) for your travel buddy. If you upgrade with points, unfortunately they need to stay in the lower cabin.

What do you need to know before you book a companion seat?

Before booking a companion seat, here’s the lowdown:

You must book your companion reward seat by calling the Virgin Atlantic Customer Centre - they cannot currently be booked online.

When you earn a companion reward seat, taxes, fees and surcharges are still applicable for both you and your companion and booking is reliant on reward seat availability for both passengers.

As the Flying Club member, you must be travelling in one of the seats.

From the date the voucher is issued, you have 24 months to take the outbound flight. The Gold Companion vouchers are valid for 12 months.

They are also flexible like reward seats, so can be changed or cancelled for £30 per person and have no minimum or maximum stay.

Companion reward seats are based on return tickets.

You can take a child as a companion. However, a child cannot be fared so they will be fared as an adult and then a refund of overpayment of taxes must be requested.

Image of a lady and her child being served drinks in Economy Class of a Virgin Atlantic flight.

There are also some restrictions on booking companion reward seats for some Flying Club members.

Companion seats are subject to reward availability, so they are not necessarily available on every flight.

If you’re a Red tier member, you can only use the companion voucher earned through the Virgin Atlantic Reward, or Reward+ Credit Card in Economy or Premium Economy.

However, Silver and Gold tier Flying Club members can use it in Economy, Premium Economy or Upper Class.

If you’re a Red tier Flying Club member and you want to fly Upper Class, you can still redeem this way, but your companion will have to pay 50% of the points required for the reward seat.

Economy Light tickets are not eligible for the Companion Reward.

Companions in Economy are available in Economy Classic service only. A revenue ticket can be purchased in Economy Delight, but the companion will only be eligible for Economy Classic service.

Image of a man in upper class on a Virgin Atlantic flight.

Standard Companion Seats: How many points do I need to take someone with me?

If you’ve got Virgin Points to spend and fancy taking a friend on your next flight, it’ll cost you a different amount of points, depending on whether your travel in standard or peak season.

For example, if you and your friend want to fly to New York, it'll cost you from 10,000 points each if you fly during standard season, but from 20,000 points each during peak season – so you could nab a great deal if your travel dates are flexible.

Virgin Atlantic guarantees a minimum of 12 reward seats on every flight , helping you to book your dream trip. These seats will be allocated as reward seats when the flight is put on sale. Book fast to reserve your reward seat, so you don’t miss out. If there are not reward seats available when you’re looking to book, check back because often more do get released during the flight selling period. If these reward seats are sold out you can still use your points as part payment on a normal flight from 3,000 Virgin Points with Points Plus Money .

If you’re not sure you’ve got enough points, visit the Virgin Atlantic website and calculate what you need.

Please note: Taxes, fees and carrier imposed surcharges apply to all reward flights and vary according to choice of cabin, departure airport, destination and date(s) of travel and are subject to change. All points shown above are per roundtrip. For one way, the points are simply half of the round trip. All Reward Flights are subject to availability and can only be used on Virgin Atlantic flights.

So, get booking, sit back and enjoy your flight!

The Virgin Atlantic Flying Club program is one of the most popular frequent-flyer programs in the United Kingdom, where Virgin Atlantic is headquartered.

However, this program is also largely popular among U.S.-based points-and-miles enthusiasts because it’s a transfer partner of many programs, including American Express Membership Rewards, Bilt Rewards, Capital One Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards and Citi ThankYou Rewards, making it easy to rack up Virgin points if you have a credit card from any of these major issuers.

Virgin Atlantic is also a member of SkyTeam alliance, meaning that Flying Club members have many options for redeeming their points for partner flights, some of which offer outstanding value.

One of the most overlooked ways to get incredible value through the Virgin Atlantic Flying Club program is to use your points to book Companion Seats. With this feature, members who are already booked on a Virgin Atlantic flight can purchase a ticket on the same flight for a companion with points at a 50% (and sometimes even larger) discount.

Essentially, by purchasing a Virgin Atlantic Companion Seat ticket with points, you’d instantly be doubling the amount of value you’d get if you purchased the award ticket for yourself. Of course, there are some rules that you need to be aware of when booking a Virgin Atlantic Companion Seat. But, for the most part, this offer is exactly as it seems—book a Companion Seat with points at a 50% discounted rate.

Virgin Atlantic

What Is a Virgin Atlantic Companion Seat Voucher?

Broadly, a Virgin Atlantic Companion Seat voucher is a voucher that allows a Virgin Atlantic Flying Club member to bring a companion with them on the same flight. However, there are actually three different kinds of Companion Seat vouchers that are earned in three different ways:

  • Standard Companion Seats: You can purchase these vouchers with Virgin points (at a 50% discounted rate) when a Flying Club member is already booked on that flight and there is award availability on that flight. Taxes, fees and surcharges apply.
  • Gold Renewal Companion Reward: You earn these vouchers each year that you renew your Gold elite status in the Flying Club program. You don’t have to spend any Virgin points to use these vouchers. Taxes, fees and surcharges apply.
  • Credit Card Companion Reward: You earn these vouchers when you spend either 20,000 British pounds sterling (about $25,336) in a cardmember year on the Virgin Atlantic Rewards Credit Card or 10,000 British pounds sterling (about $12,668) in a cardmember year on the Virgin Atlantic Rewards+ Credit Card. You don’t have to spend any Virgin points to use these vouchers. Taxes, fees and surcharges apply.

Once you’ve earned them, all three of these Companion Seat vouchers work in similar ways. However, for the sake of this article, we’re going to focus on Standard Companion Seats and how you can get a ton of value out of your Virgin points by redeeming for them.

As a quick note on Gold Renewal Companion Rewards and Credit Card Companion Rewards, although these Companion Seat vouchers come as a byproduct of your elite status or credit card spending, we still recommend maximizing their value redeeming them for the ticket with the highest cash price available.

Virgin Atlantic Companion Seats

How to Book a Virgin Atlantic Companion Seat

To book a Virgin Atlantic Companion Seat, you need to be a Virgin Atlantic Flying Club member and you need to be booked on a Virgin Atlantic-operated flight. To book a Companion Seat award, the primary member can purchase their ticket with cash or points.

Additionally, there must be award availability on the flight that you’ve booked. So, if you plan on booking a Companion Seat, we recommend doing so immediately after you book your own ticket so that award availability doesn’t fill up.

To search for award availability on Virgin Atlantic flights, we recommend using the Virgin Atlantic Reward Checker tool if you plan on flying to or from the United Kingdom. With this tool, you can select a Virgin Airlines route and view the exact amount of award space in each cabin class for each day of the month.

If your origin or destination isn’t in the United Kingdom, then the best way to search for award space is simply to go to the flight search tool on the home page of the Virgin Atlantic website, click the Advanced search drop-down menu and select Show Price In Points.

Virgin Atlantic

From there, you can search for Virgin Atlantic flights that have award availability. When you find an award flight that you want to book a Companion Seat on, you’ll need to call the Virgin Atlantic U.S. customer service line at 1-800-862-8621. It’s not possible to book Companion Seat awards online. Be sure to tell the customer service agent that you’re trying to book a Standard Companion Seat, as the different versions of companion fares may cause some confusion if you don’t specify what you’re trying to book.

Once again, to book a Virgin Atlantic Companion Seat successfully, you must already be booked on that flight and there must be award availability on that flight. If your request meets these conditions and you have enough Virgin points in your account to purchase the Companion Seat voucher, the customer service agent will confirm your purchase.

How Much Does a Virgin Atlantic Companion Seat Cost?

As previously mentioned, award rates for Companion Seats are at a 50% discount (and sometimes slightly more) compared to regular award rates. Just like with regular award tickets, there are two separate award charts for Standard season pricing and Peak season pricing.

Below are the Virgin Atlantic seasonality charts:

travel voucher terms and conditions virgin atlantic

And here’s the Virgin Atlantic Companion Seat Standard season award chart. The rates displayed in the award charts below are for round-trip flights.

Here is the Virgin Atlantic Companion Seat Peak season award chart:

If you compare the Companion Seat award rates in the charts above with the award charts for regular Virgin Atlantic awards, you’ll see that these Companion Seat awards are discounted by 50%, which is an amazing deal.

You can get excellent value out of your Virgin points by redeeming for Companion Seats. For instance, booking a round-trip flight from the U.K. to the U.S. West in Premium class during Standard season for just 27,400 points is an incredible deal.

For instance, using the Virgin Atlantic Reward Checker tool, we found availability in Premium class of round-trip flights between London (LHR) and Las Vegas (LAS) on Jan. 9 and 14.

Virgin Atlantic LHR to LAS

If you booked these flights as Companion Seats with Virgin points, it would cost you a total of 27,400 points (since these dates are during Standard season). Unfortunately, when purchasing a Companion Seat award with Virgin Atlantic, you’ll still have to pay any applicable taxes and fee, which are often quite high.

For instance, on this round-trip itinerary from London to Las Vegas in Premium class, the taxes and fees would be 533 British pounds sterling (about $678).

Companion seats with virgin points london to las vegas

When we searched for Premium flights on these same dates between London and Las Vegas, the best cash rate that we could find was 3,634 British pounds sterling (about $4,590 at the current conversion rate).

booking flight companion seats with virgin points

Thus, by booking this flight as a Companion Seat with Virgin points instead of with cash, you’d be getting a whopping value of nearly 14 cents per point (which factors in the taxes and fees that you have to pay). This is amazing value for the Virgin Atlantic Flying Club program and the entire frequent-flyer miles landscape.

With some searching using the methods that we showed you above, you can find many Companion Seat redemptions that offer just as much (if not more) value than the example above.

Can You Upgrade Companion Seat Tickets?

When you book a Companion Seat, you need to travel on the same flight as your companion. If you, as the primary member, wish to upgrade to the next cabin class, you can do so with either cash or points. However, the companion that you’re traveling with can be upgraded using cash only (and not points) and only if there is an empty seat in that cabin.

If you choose to upgrade your companion with cash, you’ll get a discounted rate. If you choose to upgrade yourself, as the primary member, with points, then your companion will need to stay in the lower cabin.

Companion Seat Terms and Conditions

There are a few other rules and restrictions to be aware of when trying to book a Companion Seat award. We’ve listed these below:

  • From the date when the Companion Seat voucher is issued, you have 24 months to take the outbound flight.
  • Companion Seat awards can be changed or canceled for 30 British pounds (about $38) per person.
  • Economy Light tickets are not eligible for Companion Seat awards.
  • Economy Companion Seat awards are available only in Economy Classic. The primary member may purchase an Economy Delight seat, but the companion will be in Economy Classic.
  • You are allowed to bring a child as your companion. However, that companion will be ticketed as an adult, after which a refund of overpayment of taxes must be requested.
  • If you’re a Flying Club Red elite member, you can use a Credit Card Companion Reward only in Economy or Premium classes. Silver and Gold status members can use these vouchers for Economy, Premium and Upper Class.

The Bottom Line

If you’re already a Virgin Atlantic Flying Club program member and you frequently book flights for others, then you should definitely start looking into using the program’s Companion Seat feature. By booking a Companion Seat, you can book a ticket for a friend or family member on the same flight as you for 50% of the regular sum of Virgin points.

Virgin Atlantic is a transfer partner of many transferrable credit card rewards programs, so if you have credit card points with one of these programs, then you may even want to consider transferring some points into the Virgin Atlantic Flying Club program just to use this Companion Seat feature. It’s one of the easiest ways to get outstanding value out of your points.
