If you like to have a well-lit area to do your makeup, relying on a hotel vanity while you travel is a bit of a risk. Instead, we recommend bringing along a lightweight, packable lighted makeup mirror to ensure you have ample light to complete your makeup look to perfection.

A lighted makeup mirror can also help you see better if you have an extensive skin care routine. They may have a variety of features including warmer or colder light options, magnification settings, and more. Just make sure you pack a lighted makeup mirror that is durable for travel, meaning it folds into a sturdy shape that isn’t too heavy or bulky. Read on for our list of the best ones to shop right now.

Best Overall

Mocado led foldable travel makeup mirror.

It has six light settings and folds flat to the size of a photo frame.

It charges via USB, so make sure you bring a travel adapter for the outlet.

If you want a sturdy, easily packable lighted makeup mirror with all the bells and whistles, the Mocado LED Folded Travel Makeup Mirror has everything you could want. When opened, the 5 x 7-inch mirror sits upright on a tabletop so you can do your makeup without worrying about holding your mirror in one hand. When not in use, you can close the cover to protect the mirror glass, and stow it in the included travel case.

We love that there are 72 LED lights that function between six different settings, including three brightness levels and white, neutral, and warm light hues. If you like to get a closer look at your face when doing fine tasks such as tweezing your eyebrows or drawing a winged eyeliner, you can use the 10x magnifying attachment, which can be affixed to the top of the mirror or removed when not in use. It charges via USB port, so you can plug it into the same socket as your phone or you can give it a power boost through your computer.

The Details: 5.1 x 7.5 x 0.6 inches | 9.44 ounces | USB charged

Best Tabletop

Vanity planet handheld makeup mirror with lights.

It has multiple magnification options and dimmable bulbs.

It’s a bit heavier than the other options.

This tabletop mount folding makeup mirror uses 36 LED bulbs to give consistent and dimmable lighting while you apply your makeup or do your skincare routine. If you need to get a close-up look while you attend to tiny details, you can flip over the mirror and use either the 3x or 5x magnified mini mirrors included on the other side. It comes in pink or white colorways that fold up to protect the mirror glass in transport.

The Details: 11.4 x 7.7 x 1.2 inches | 24 ounces | USB charged

Best Rechargeable

Fenty beauty led vanity mirror.

Fenty Beauty

It contains a wireless charging pad that can recharge your phone.

It packs as two separate pieces.

When traveling, outlets can be sparse, so we love that this tabletop LED vanity mirror includes a wireless charging pad that you can use to recharge your phone while you do your makeup. The mirror sits on an adjustable base which has a 360-degree swivel and tilt, so you can get the best view from any angle. It uses a touch sensor to adjust the brightness level, giving you the option to dim the LED bulbs. Plus, there’s a detachable 5x magnifying mirror to allow you to take a closer look when desired.

The Details: 14.4 x 8 x 6.25 inches (with base) | USB charged

Best Battery Operated

Conair reflections 12x led spot mirror.

The battery-powered magnifying mirror can be used on a tabletop or suctioned to a smooth, flat surface.

There’s only one magnification setting.

If you don’t want to run the risk of forgetting to charge your lighted makeup mirror ahead of your trip, you may find peace of mind in this battery-powered option which runs on three AAA batteries (not included). Great for precision work such as tweezing or applying false eyelashes, this 12x magnifying mirror lets you get a super close look at the area. We love that this mirror can be used handheld, on a tabletop (with the use of a kickstand), or you can suction it to a smooth, flat surface such as a bathroom mirror or a shower wall.

The Details: 4.4 x 4.4 x 1.8 inches | 3.84 ounces | Battery operated

Best Magnification

Sejoy travel makeup mirror.

Various magnification settings allow you to complete precision tasks or get a wider field of view.

It’s bulky.

This tri-fold lighted mirror has options for 1x, 3x, and 7x magnification, allowing you to see every detail for precision tasks or zoom out to admire the bigger picture. Sixty-four LED bulbs operate on three light modes (natural, warm, and cold) and can be dimmed or brightened. A convenient memory setting allows you to lock in your favorite light options for easier access. We especially love the kickstand, which allows you to set the mirror on a tabletop and adjust it to various tilt settings — or, it doubles as a hanging loop, which you can use to secure the mirror to a hook (such as a towel hook) and use it upright.

The Details: 6.3 x 5.6 x 0.7 inches | 9.6 ounces | USB charged

Best Hanging

Alovely travel magnifying mirror with light.

It offers full-size magnification.

Make sure to protect the handle with cushioning when you pack it.

If you prefer to do your makeup in the bathroom or while you stand, a hanging lighted makeup mirror may be more up your alley than a tabletop one. Conveniently, this mirror does both: its handle can be folded so it stands upright on a flat surface, or it can be hung on a wall hook. The double-sided mirror has 1x or 10x magnification options, and 64 LED bulbs provide ample lighting with cold, neutral, or warm tone settings. A single charge lasts up to 10 hours, so you won’t need to recharge it frequently at all.

The Details: 9.8 x 7.68 inches | 18.72 ounces | USB charged

Best Folding

Beautifive travel makeup mirror.

It’s very compact for when luggage real estate is tight.

The mirror isn’t as wide as many of the other options.

This is the most petite item on our list besides the pocket-sized compact, so it’s well-suited for traveling light on weekend trips or if you’re trying to conserve space in a smaller carry-on bag. It can be used while folded as a handheld mirror or expanded as an adjustable tabletop mirror that swivels 180 degrees.

The dual-sided mirror offers 1x and 8x magnification, plus there are three light intensities to choose from. Don’t stress if you forget to shut off your mirror — a 30-minute timed auto-off will do it for you. And if you happen to be out of the required four AAA batteries, you can opt to plug it into the wall, your laptop, or a power bank instead.

The Details: 6.3 x 2 inches (folded) or 6.3 x 13.7 (extended) | 17.6 ounces | Battery operated or charge with wall outlet

Best with Storage

Solacol multi functional led makeup mirror.

Keep your eye pencils, palettes, and more tucked away along with your lighted mirror.

There is only one light setting.

This chic zip case, which includes a lighted makeup mirror and storage for makeup, skincare, or jewelry essentials, provides a most convenient way to tote your lighted mirror and your makeup all in one. There are three colors to choose from (green, gray, and pink) in the leather case, which contains one large compartment (perfect for makeup palettes), one long compartment (for eyeliner or lip pencils), and two small compartments (which can be used for hair ties or small jewelry).

The Details: 4.5 x 6.5 x 1.4 inches

Best Compact

Kintion rechargeable pocket mirror.

The pocket-sized mirror comes in nine fun colors.

There isn’t as much surface area to view full makeup looks.

Small enough to fit inside the pocket of your jeans, this rechargeable lighted mirror is the most packable on our list, perfect for stashing in a purse or clutch. At just 2.26 ounces, it adds virtually no weight to your packing limit.

The foldable item contains two mirrors with 1x and 3x magnifications. It includes LED lights, on which the brightness can be adjusted or turned off completely, and you have the ability to toggle between warm, neutral, and cold light settings. You can pick from nine colors, making it a great gift for a travel-loving friend.

The Details: 3.3 x 2.5 inches | 2.26 ounces | USB charged

Best with Case

Merifun compact mirror with light.

Compact yet versatile, this mirror has six light options plus a memory setting.

There are no hanging or wall-mount features.

A carrying case can give your lighted makeup mirror added protection during transport. This pocket-sized pick folds up to defend the two mirrors (in 1x and 10x magnifications) from accidental nicks and scratches, and the soft carrying case adds further security. The LED bulbs operate between three color modes — warm, neutral, and cold — and they are dimmable by the touch of a button.

The Details: 4 x 4 inches | 5 ounces | USB charged

Tips for Buying Lighted Makeup Mirrors

Think about power source and battery life.

If you’re traveling with a lighted makeup mirror, you’ll want something reliable and easy to charge when you’re on the go. Consider a USB-charged product, which can be plugged into a wall outlet, a power bank, or your laptop for easy recharging. For shorter trips, a battery-operated product may be sufficient — just remember to insert new batteries prior to your trip so you don’t run out of juice.

Prioritize portability

Something you can toss in your purse or toiletry case is best for travel. A mirror that folds up to protect the glass will give you security that it won’t crack or scratch in transit. If your mirror comes with a protective carrying case, that’s a great option as well.

Consider size and weight limitations. Though a larger mirror provides a more spacious viewing field, it may infringe on luggage real estate or suitcase weight limits. Take into consideration the other items you’re packing when deciding how much leeway you can give your lighted makeup mirror.

If you’re planning on doing a full face of makeup, you’ll want a mirror with 1x magnification so you can see the finished product in a standard view. For precision tasks such as applying liquid eyeliner, adding false lashes, or tweezing your eyebrows, use a mirror with a higher magnification such as 5x or 10x. Many mirrors include both a standard magnification plus a larger magnification, which is the most versatile solution for travel.

Yes. There are no restrictions on lighted makeup mirrors for travel except any size and weight limitations for your carry-on or checked luggage.

Whether you travel for work or for leisure, you’ve likely faced the frustration of getting ready using a poor-quality hotel, train, or airplane mirror.

That’s why travel mirrors can make a huge difference. These mirrors are essential tools for some people to make sure they look their best while on the go.

Picking a travel mirror isn’t always as simple as just finding the first option you see and buying it. There are a lot of details that differentiate different mirrors on the market. Here are a few details you should consider.

Size and Weight

Travel mirror size and weight

The first thing you need to consider is the size and weight of a mirror. Since travel mirrors are meant to be portable, you don’t want to purchase one that’s cumbersome to carry. However, if you get a mirror that’s too small for your needs, it’ll essentially be useless.

If you just want to be able to check your reflection, a small mirror you can fit in your pocket will likely be fine. If you want to apply makeup or get a close look at your skin, look for a larger option.

Travel mirror material

Since you’ll be traveling with your mirror, you’ll want to make sure you pick one made from the right material.

If you purchase a fragile mirror, it’ll likely break at some point during a trip. Many mirrors are made out of plastic that won’t shatter or break easily.

Hot Tip: You might want to consider a mirror that has a leather case. That type of material can usually act as a shock absorber so your mirror won’t break if it’s jostled around in your bag or dropped.

Storage Design

You should also consider how you’ll be storing your mirror while you travel. Many options are foldable, so they become more compact when not in use. This helps save room in your luggage. It also makes them easy to just toss in your bag.

There are also options that come with a carrying case for added protection and organization. Other mirrors, instead, must be packed as-is. These mirrors are usually small and thin, but they can add some stress to packing if you worry about scratches or are trying to save room.

Magnification

Travel mirror magnification

You’ll also want to determine the amount of magnification you want in a travel mirror and if you want any magnification at all.

A magnified mirror will mostly help if you’re applying makeup or doing a skincare routine. So, depending on how close of a look you want of your skin will narrow down your options.

If you don’t want a magnified mirror, make sure you look closely at the descriptions of the options you’re considering. You can purchase a standard mirror or a dual-sided model that has a regular reflection side.

Other Features

You should also consider whether or not you want any other features in your travel mirror. The most common extra feature people look for in mirrors is lighting. A lighted mirror can drastically help if you intend to use your mirror to get ready.

Some travel mirrors come equipped with LED lights for this purpose. As opposed to “stationary” lighted mirrors, these options are usually battery-powered and cordless.

Dual mirrors are another common feature people look for. This usually gives travelers different reflection options to suit different mirror needs throughout a trip.

Hot Tip: Make sure to drop your mirror into one of our picks for the best toiletry bag , best makeup bag , or best Dopp kit !

The 10 Best Travel Mirrors

There are thousands of portable mirrors out there, and any one of them could be the right option for you. However, hundreds of them might not be a good choice for your needs.

To help you figure out what mirror to get, we’ve looked at the best options available on the market and compiled this list.

15x Magnifying Handheld Mirror

Being able to get ready on the go is the main driver behind this magnifying mirror. It has 2 sides, 1 with a regular reflection and 1 that offers 15x magnification for an up-close look. While the mirror is marketed as being handheld, you aren’t restricted to just that use.

If you need both hands free, you can fold the mirror’s handle to create a convenient stand that you can adjust to suit your needs. It can even be hung up and used as a small wall mirror.

When the handle is fully folded, the mirror only measures 12 centimeters across, which is nearly doubled when the handle is extended. It’s also lightweight, so it’s easy to carry in any bag.

What We Like:

  • Multiple setup options

What We Don’t Like:

  • Easily scratched

Fancii 10X Magnifying Lighted Makeup Mirror

When you’re traveling, you aren’t guaranteed an optimal place to set up and get ready every day. That’s why Fancii created this mirror to make sure you always look your best. This small mirror manages to create a near-professional setup even in less than ideal conditions.

It’s only 6.5 inches wide, so it doesn’t take up much room. However, it also has full lighting and offers 10x magnification to give you a clear look at your reflection.

The lights even offer a natural daylight look for optimal use. You can even adjust its angle or swivel the mirror to suit your needs. It can also suction to most flat surfaces, so you don’t have to worry about it getting knocked over.

  • Cordless and lit
  • Doesn’t have 1x magnification

Deweisn Folding Travel Mirror

If you’re looking for the perfect mirror you can take with you on any trip, this option from Deweisn is worth considering.

Designed to be incredibly thin, you can fit it in most travel bags or duffles. In fact, when fully folded up for storage, it’s less than an inch thick. However, that thinness doesn’t come with other size trade-offs.

Measuring in at nearly 10 x 7.5 inches, it’s still large enough to give you a clear look at your reflection. The mirror is also fully-lit, so you can easily see your reflection under any conditions.

It offers crystal-clear 1x reflection without any distortions. That means you can cut down on headaches or dizziness and actually know what you look like.

  • 3 lighting options

YTZJ Direct Compact Mirror

If your main reason for getting a travel mirror is to be able to quickly check your reflection while out and about, this is the compact option for you.

Measuring 2.4 x 3.4 inches when folded, the mirror is about the size of a credit card and not much thicker, so you can easily fit it in your pocket or purse.

Though it’s small, you still get 2 mirrors. The first offers 1x magnification and the other 2x magnification for a slightly closer look. So, it’s perfect for making sure you’re looking your best.

Since it was designed to be tossed in a bag stress-free, it’s made of shatter-proof material. You don’t have to worry about finding mirror shards in your bag.

  • No lock closure

Fancii LED Lighted Travel Makeup Mirror

If you’re looking for a lighted mirror that’s still incredibly easy to carry, this option by Fancii is perfect. You can easily hold this mirror with one hand, making it more convenient on the go than many other models out there.

The entire mirror also weighs less than 7 ounces, so it’s easy to carry. However, it’s also larger than a standard compact mirror, so you can get a larger, clearer reflection.

It’s dual-sided and offers both 1x and 10x magnification. So whether you want to check you have nothing in your teeth or you are applying makeup, this is an optimal mirror for you. The 1x mirror is also fully-lit as well, making its clear reflection even clearer.

  • 24-month warranty
  • Unlit 10x magnification

Rechargeable Travel Makeup Vanity Mirror

If you like the idea of a lighted travel mirror, but you don’t want to deal with having to remember to check and change batteries, this is a great alternative. This vanity mirror is completely rechargeable, so you never have to worry about it dying on you halfway through your trip.

You can easily dim the lights with its touch screen feature to create the right lighting for your needs. You can also adjust the lighting of your lights between white, cool, and warm. You have full control to get ready in whatever conditions are optimal for you.

You can also easily prop up the mirror thanks to its built-in stand, giving you both hands-free to get ready.

  • USB charged
  • On the larger side

10×7 Inches Portable Folding Makeup Mirror

You can easily create a vanity no matter where you are with this foldable travel mirror. Measuring 10 x 7 inches, this mirror option gives you a nice clear reflection without any of the fuss smaller mirrors can make.

The mirror itself has an HD quality reflection without any distortions or warping. It’s also got an adjustable stand you can angle however you need. When not in use, just fold the stand back over to create a convenient protective cover.

The case and frame are also covered in imitation leather which doesn’t just make the mirror sleek and stylish — it also offers extra protection to keep your mirror safe from shattering if dropped or bumped around.

  • Extra case protection
  • Only 1 mirror

Feruaro Travel Mirror

This little travel mirror is perfect for people who want the control you get from adjustable mirrors but don’t want something big and bulky.

When folded up, this mirror measures 5 x 3.4 inches, so it’s definitely a compact option. However, it’s still the perfect size to see yourself, no matter if you need to get ready or just want to check your reflection.

The mirror comes with 8 LED lights that you can easily adjust in brightness. In addition, the lights are powered by long-lasting button batteries, which eliminates any cords that could get lost or tangled .

Unlike many other lighted travel mirrors, you also get both 1x and 2x magnification if you need a closer look.

  • Adjustable stand and 2 mirrors
  • Only subtle brightness differences

Deweisn Magnifying Mirror  10X/1X

If you want a mirror that will let you keep up your skincare even while traveling, this magnifying mirror is the option for you. The mirror measures 7 inches across, giving you a sizable reflection you and work with.

It’s also dual-sided. One side offers 1x normal magnification, and the other offers 10x magnification for precision work.

The mirror has a 360 folding capability, so you can hold it or set it up on a table, whichever suits your needs best. This small mirror also manages to have 3 lighting settings: cool, warm, and white. So you can choose the one that helps you see best.

This mirror was ultimately designed with beauty and skincare in mind, making it perfect for tweezing or makeup.

  • Adjustable angles
  • Feels heavy

NAYSAYE Travel Folding Portable Mirror

If you are in the market for a budget mirror that will still get the job done, NAYSAYE has the option for you. This mirror is just under 7 x 5 inches in size, so it’s large enough to clearly see yourself without being too oversized.

It’s lightweight, weighing around half a pound, so it won’t be too heavy in your luggage . You also don’t have to worry about it getting jostled or damaged. The cover is made of PU leather, so it will absorb the brunt of any bumps or shocks.

It might not come with all the fancy add-ons as some other travel mirrors, but it’s a no-fuss, stress-free option that will suit most types of travel use.

  • All-around convenience
  • Too big for purses or handbags

Ideally, a travel mirror will have a good ratio between size and power. That way, you can use it effectively without it taking up too much room in your bag.

However, there are a lot of details that can determine which mirror is the right option for you and your travels. We hope that this list has helped you narrow down your choices so that you’re closer to picking your perfect travel mirror.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do i need a travel mirror.

Travel mirrors can be a useful tool. However, they aren’t always necessary. A travel mirror can be a good investment if you use a lighted mirror or a compact often while at home. You can likely forgo getting one if a regular mirror suits you.

Are mirrors allowed on airplanes?

Travel mirrors are allowed on planes in both carry-on and checked luggage. However, you might have size and weight concerns for heavier mirrors. Most travel mirrors are compact, so you shouldn’t have any problems packing them. Larger mirrors might need to be removed from carry-on luggage if they cause imaging issues in the x-ray scanner.

Are travel mirrors magnifying?

Not all travel mirrors are magnifying. A single-sided mirror will likely just have a regular reflection. However, this isn’t universal. Double-sided mirrors, instead, typically have a regular and a magnified option. There aren’t any standard rules for mirror magnification, so check the details of any option you might be considering.

How big should a travel mirror be?

There are no standard rules for what qualifies as a travel mirror. However, you can follow some general guidelines to determine if an option is suitable for trips. A travel mirror will likely be thin, lightweight, and compact, so it can be easily packed in a bag easily.

How long do lighted travel makeup mirrors last.

A travel makeup mirror with lighted bulbs is easier to carry than it’s ever been and not what you remember growing up. Today, they feature LED lights, which don’t burn out within a year or two. In fact, in bathroom lighting, mirrors with LED lights have an efficacy of over 50,000 hours—that’s over 10 years of life!

You won’t use it nearly as much as you will your bathroom mirror, which means it will have as many years of life as you have adventures!

I have the Ferraro mirror. Love that it lights up and has 2x magnifying side. Packing it up right now for my trip to Austin Texas for my daughter’s bachelorette weekend.

This is a very valuable article. I travel a lot. Mirrors in hotels can be anything from very helpful to non-existent. I’m five feet tall and wear glasses. Putting on make-up or using tweezers can be quite a challenge at times.

Oh this was such a timely post, to replace a mirror I lost in transit and to do so with greater magnification. I’ve been thrilled with the Fancii, thank you!!

Thank you for this article. Unfortunately, the older I get I have to use a mirror with magnification and not all hotels have this kind of mirror.

Candy

Wow, the Feruaro Portable Makeup Mirror With Lights is exactly what I have been looking for. I love your articles and all the great travel info you provide us with. I have been following you since well before Covid. Thank you so much!!

Paula Peterson

I’ve been looking for a good, but compact travel mirror. These are great recommendations! A travel mirror is an important but often overlooked travel accessory. We can pack intelligently and down size all those cosmetics but without a good mirror it’s impossible to get a natural look in a dim hotel room. Thanks!

Sosi

Thank you for this list, just added one to my shopping list! Very helpful!

The Best Lighted Makeup Mirrors

Four different lighted makeup mirrors pictured together.

By Dorie Chevlen

Dorie Chevlen is a writer covering home design. Her subjects have included scented candles, makeup mirrors, and—her favorite—popcorn makers.

According to Greek myth, Narcissus died because he was obsessed with his own reflection. After 50 hours researching and testing vanity mirrors for this guide, I can relate.

Thankfully, the long hours I spent gazing at my own reflection had a more useful result. We found four great vanity mirrors that reveal you just as you are—plus, they have good lighting and magnification to help you with all your daily grooming tasks.

Everything we recommend

travel mirrors magnified lighted

Fancii Vera + Lara

An all-around great makeup mirror.

This mirror delivers a superb blend of functionality and looks, offering both a standard reflection and a magnifying attachment. But it’s not cheap, and it doesn’t come with a wall charger—just a cable.

Buying Options

Budget pick.

travel mirrors magnified lighted

Amztolife Lighted Makeup Mirror

A simple, no-frills mirror.

This mirror offers most of the same features of our other picks: multiple light settings, magnification, and a decent battery life. But its design lacks finesse, and its materials feel cheap.

Upgrade pick

travel mirrors magnified lighted

Simplehuman Sensor Mirror Trio

A deluxe mirror with a price tag to match.

This mirror lights up when it senses your face, a touch panel lets you easily control the brightness, and it has three different magnifications—it's a work of engineering beauty. But it costs a small fortune.

travel mirrors magnified lighted

Simplehuman Sensor Mirror Fold

Zoom in from anywhere.

With a compact frame that folds up easily, this close-up mirror is a great travel companion or a good fit in small spaces at home. But it offers only 10x magnification and one light setting.

The Fancii Vera + Lara lighted makeup mirror has a sleek design with elevated details that make it both a great utilitarian tool and an attractive object. The mirror is highly adjustable, offering three dimmable light temperatures and a choice of two views: The main oval-shaped Vera mirror provides a standard 1x reflection, and the small, magnetically attaching Lara has 10x magnification.

The charging port in the back glows to indicate the mirror’s power level but does so gently enough that you can keep it charging in a bedroom without its interrupting your sleep; it comes with only a cable for charging, but it’s compatible with most USB-A wall chargers. And its curvy metallic base, available in three color finishes, looks pretty on a dresser.

However, it requires some assembly and isn’t cheap. (We found that the magical trio of good looks, performance, and build quality was rare to nonexistent among mirrors under $100.)

The low-priced 8-inch Amztolife Lighted Makeup Mirror has all the essential features you could want in a budget makeup mirror, namely light, magnification, and adjustability. Its light (in three temperature tones) is bright and easy to use, with just one touch button for control.

The mirror swivels all the way around (360 degrees), so you can adjust it to most angles, with one side of the mirror at the standard 1x and the other at 10x magnification.

However, the mirror’s charging cable sticks awkwardly out from the side of the mirror surface, and the port doesn’t accept typical USB cables—if you lose the DC charging cable that accompanies the mirror, you may have a hard time finding a replacement. Some reviewers have also raised concerns about its longevity.

The Simplehuman Sensor Mirror Trio is the most luxurious mirror we tested, with a price tag to match.

On one side, the mirror has a 5x magnified view; on the reverse, it presents a standard view with a 10x insert along the bottom. The mirror automatically lights up when your face nears it, and then it dims when you move away—a cool feature that also helps the battery last for five weeks (maybe more) of regular use.

The light has two temperature options, bright daylight and warm candlelight, each with touch-adjustable brightness. The mirror’s metal body (which is available in three finishes) looks well made, and its five-year warranty is the most generous of all our picks.

The Simplehuman Sensor Mirror Fold offers the same five-year warranty and motion-activated light as our upgrade pick but in a tinier, more travel-friendly body.

It comes with a carrying case so you can protect the mirror surface and store your charging cord on the go, and it charges via the very common Micro-USB standard.

However, the reflective surface, which measures just 5 inches in diameter, may be too small for some people’s everyday use, and it provides only a zoomed-in 10x view and a fixed brightness and temperature setting for its light.

The research

How we picked and tested, our pick: fancii vera + lara, budget pick: amztolife lighted makeup mirror, upgrade pick: simplehuman sensor trio, also great: simplehuman sensor mirror fold, other good mirrors, the competition.

You can find scores of makeup and vanity mirrors, of all varieties, including magnified and non-magnified; 1x, 5x, 7x, and 10x magnifications; lit and unlit; and battery powered, corded, or rechargeable-battery powered. You get the point.

To get a better sense of what qualities to look for, I interviewed two professional makeup artists: Sheika Daley , a Lancôme Global International Artist based in Atlanta; and Grace Lee , a lead artist with Maybelline New York based in Toronto, Canada. They highlighted a few important considerations.

  • Adjustable brightness: Daley emphasized the importance of light control in a mirror. “The lights have to be pretty bright so I can see everything, but not too bright that I blind myself.” Having at least a few options helps ensure that you land on the perfect brightness for your needs.
  • Adjustable angles: Because some makeup is easier to apply at different angles, “being able to adjust the mirror up and down is helpful,” Lee said.
  • Portability: Depending on your needs, and whether you have the space to leave a mirror stationary, you may prefer a corded mirror over a rechargeable model. Our experts use both, so we tested both.
  • Light temperature: Daley said that being able to see your face in cool, warm, and neutral lights can help you predict what your makeup will look like in different settings (the office, sunlight). Lee added, “Sometimes people do their makeup with bad lighting and don’t realize they applied too much bronzer or their foundation color is wrong.” (The light settings may be less important, of course, for people using mirrors for non-makeup needs.)
  • Magnification: Daley noted that for people with vision limitations, magnification can be a necessary tool. Neither of our experts likes applying their makeup entirely in a magnified view; instead, both prefer to glance at it for detail work.

Using their insights, I narrowed the testing field by reading dozens of makeup mirror reviews. I also surveyed Wirecutter colleagues and makeup-loving friends about what they looked for in a mirror and what models they had already tried. I then selected 12 promising mirrors to test in person, focusing on a mix of magnifying and non-magnifying options, as well as both portable and stationary models. I kept an eye out for mirrors that were pretty to look at, too, since they tend to live on counters and dressers.

During testing, I paid attention to how the mirrors were packaged and whether they were damaged in transit. If the mirrors came with stickers or labels, I assessed how easy those labels were to remove, and whether they left a sticky residue. I took note if the mirrors required any assembly and how sturdily they were constructed. I compared how bright the lights were, cycled through the different temperature and dimming settings, and considered how user-friendly the touchscreens, dials, and switches were. On portable models, I measured how long the batteries lasted, and what they were like to charge. And, by necessity, I spent many, many hours staring at my own reflection.

A Fancii Vera + Lara lighted makeup mirror.

The Fancii Vera + Lara has all the features we could ask of a lighted makeup mirror, including long battery life, three light temperatures, adjustable brightness, and a close-up attachment that sticks on magnetically.

It’s versatile and adjustable. The Vera + Lara is actually two mirrors: the large oval lit-but-non-magnified Vera and a small 10x magnifying attachment, the Lara . The magnetic Lara sticks only to the upper half of the Vera, but because you can angle the whole thing within a 45-degree range, we found it easy to focus on the lips, brows, or chin there.

You can also use the Lara on its own, as a handheld mirror. (If you prefer just a simple, unmagnified reflection, you can buy just the Vera, but the bundle is usually about the same price.) The light temperature on the Vera toggles between cool, neutral, and warm—good for matching foundation to skin.

It’s user-friendly, and it remembers your settings. For people who hate reading instruction manuals, this mirror is refreshingly idiotproof. The two touch buttons are self-explanatory: Tapping the sun icon toggles through the three temperature settings, holding the power symbol dims or brightens the light, and tapping it turns the light off and on. (Like all our picks, the Vera + Lara comes with a microfiber cloth—good in this case for wiping away the inevitable fingerprints.)

The mirror remembers your latest setting between uses, which is handy if you prefer a particular temperature and brightness combo.

It has a long-lasting battery and automatic shutoff. In our testing, the Fancii Vera + Lara matched its advertised battery life, lasting around four and a half hours on the brightest setting and nine hours on the dimmest. After 30 minutes of use, it automatically shuts off to keep you from accidentally draining the battery.

The mirror charges via Micro-USB cable and can fully charge in about three and a half hours; an inconspicuous charging light at the back of the mirror flashes orange while charging and green when complete. The mirror comes with a two-year warranty .

The Micro-USB port on the Vera + Lara lighted makeup mirror.

It’s nice to look at. The pleasing and generously sized oval mirror sits atop a rounded, tubular metal frame, which comes in three finishes (black, chrome, and rose gold). A nonslip base underneath keeps it steady, whether it's sitting pretty on a bathroom counter or a crowded desktop.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

The Vera + Lara requires some assembly, namely affixing the base to the mirror with the included mini screwdriver and screws. The small parts may be difficult to handle for someone with dexterity limitations. (Our budget pick also requires assembly, but no tools.)

At around $125, this model is not cheap.

The automatic shutoff may be annoying if you like to take your time; after 30 minutes, you’ll have to press the light back on.

The mirror comes with only a cable for charging—no wall charger—but it is compatible with most standard USB-A chargers or outlets.

  • Dimensions: mirror, 9.5 by 5.5 inches (LW); overall, 13 by 6.5 inches (LW)
  • Power: rechargeable battery (includes Micro-USB cable only, no charger), around 4.5 hours on dim and 9 hours on bright
  • Magnification: 1x with 10x attachment
  • Lights: LED, three light-temperature settings, dimmable
  • Finishes: rose gold chrome, silver chrome, matte black
  • Weight: 2.56 pounds
  • Warranty: two years

An Amztolife Lighted Makeup Mirror.

You can find a slew of nearly identical mirrors on sites like Amazon, Target, and Walmart that sport convoluted online-branding names. Of all the budget mirrors we tested, the 8-inch Amztolife Lighted Makeup Mirror was our favorite. We can’t yet vouch for its longevity, but its price may be low enough for you to take that risk.

It’s simple to set up and use. Like the Fancii mirror, the Amztolife mirror requires some assembly, but it needs no tools—you just screw the mirror onto the base. And using it is equally straightforward. The light bulb symbol on the mirror is the only “button.” Tapping it moves the mirror’s light through the modes warm, neutral, cool, on, and off. Pressing and holding it brightens and dims the light. Like all our picks, this mirror comes with a microfiber cloth, which is useful for cleaning up the inevitable fingerprints around the touch button.

The charging port on the side of the Amztolife mirror.

It swivels 360 degrees, with light at every angle. Unlike our picks from Fancii or Simplehuman, the Amztolife 8-inch mirror swivels all the way around, 360 degrees, so you can adjust it to any angle, with one side of it at 1x and the other at 10x magnification. And its light—in those three temperature tones—is as bright as what you can get from the Fancii and Simplehuman mirrors.

The charging port does not accept typical USB cables, so if you lose the DC charging cable included with the mirror, it may not be easy to replace.

Like the Fancii mirror, this model doesn’t come with a wall charger, as it has a cable only. But it should be able to charge with most standard USB-A chargers .

If you plan on charging your mirror in your bedroom, note that this model’s charging light may be too bright to sleep with. And though you can use the light while the mirror charges, the cable connects noticeably to a port on the side of the mirror.

The metallic finish of the base looks cheap and readily attracts fingerprints.

The on/off touch button, which also controls brightness and temperature, is only on the 1x side, so when you’re using the magnified side, you have to flip the mirror to adjust the light.

Several Amazon reviews complain that the battery fizzled out after about six months to a year of use, or that the mirror’s light would start turning on at random times without being touched. We haven’t run into any of these issues, but we’ll be keeping a close eye. This mirror also has no warranty.

  • Dimensions: mirror, 7 inches (diameter); overall, 15 by 8 inches (LW)
  • Power: rechargeable battery (includes USB-to-DC charging cable, no charger), about 4 hours on the brightest setting
  • Magnification: 1x, 10x on reverse
  • Lights: LED, three temperature settings, dimmable
  • Finishes: chrome, nickel, matte black, gold, gold with rhinestones
  • Weight: 2.25 pounds
  • Warranty: none

A Simplehuman Sensor Trio lighted makeup mirror.

The Simplehuman Sensor Trio is an expensive piece of tech—perhaps more tech than most people need—but it’s like something out of Star Trek.

It looks great—and you’ll look great in its reflection. The Sensor Trio has a large reflective surface; at 8 inches in diameter, it’s the largest overall surface area among our picks. (The company also sells an even larger version,  the Trio Max .) One side is 1x with a mini 10x insert; the magnification on the reverse side is 5x. The Sensor Trio is available in three finishes: white, rose gold, or brushed silver.

The light automatically turns on when it senses your face. You can then control the brightness via a touch panel on the side of the mirror. You can also toggle between two light settings—a bright daylight or warm candlelight tone—by twisting a small knob on the side. The touch controls stay in the same spot no matter which side you’re looking at, unlike on the Amztolife mirror, which has buttons only on the 1x side. Like the Fancii mirror, this Simplehuman model remembers your latest setting between uses.

A cord plugged into the base of the Simplehuman Sensor Trio lighted makeup mirror.

It has an impressive battery and warranty. Because the Sensor Trio turns off automatically when you remove your face from its vicinity (five seconds after you move away, it dims, and then 10 seconds later it goes dark), we had difficulty testing the battery length in hours. The company estimates, and most reviewers confirm, that the mirror’s battery lasts for about five weeks with moderate daily use, and it takes about five hours to fully charge. Simplehuman’s five years of coverage is also by far the longest warranty on any of our picks.

The Sensor Trio was the most expensive mirror we tested.

Some people may not like that the device is motion activated rather than manual. On occasion it lit up when I walked past it, a quirk that several other reviewers also noted. If this bothers you, you can turn the mirror off using the button underneath the stand.

Some reviewers wished that it had a larger range of motion, as it can tilt up only about 25 degrees. Finally, the mirror has a ring around the base that pulses light while it charges; some people may find this disruptive in a bedroom.

  • Dimensions: mirror, 8 inches (diameter); overall, 15.6 by 9 inches (LW)
  • Power: rechargeable battery (includes Micro-USB cable and charger), around five weeks of estimated battery life with moderate daily use; the larger Trio Max is plug-in only
  • Magnification: 1x, 5x, and miniature 10x section
  • Lights: LED, two temperature settings, dimmable
  • Finishes: white, rose gold, brushed silver; the larger Trio Max comes only in brushed silver
  • Weight: 3.69 pounds
  • Warranty: five years

A Simplehuman Sensor Mirror Fold lighted makeup mirror.

The compact Simplehuman Sensor Mirror Fold is the smallest of our picks, but it’s a great option for travel or for small spaces.

It’s the most travel-friendly mirror we tested. The Sensor Mirror Fold flattens to just 4.5 by 5.7 inches, and it weighs only 1.25 pounds. Unlike the other two travel mirrors we tested, the Conair Halo Rechargeable Tablet Mirror and Deweisn Folding Travel Mirror, it comes with a carrying case so you can protect the mirror surface and store the charging cord. And because it charges via Micro-USB, you probably already have a drawer full of backups should you leave the included cable behind in a hotel room.

The Sensor Mirror Fold in a carrying case.

It’s height adjustable. It’s the only mirror we tested that allows you to adjust it to two different heights, by flipping the mirror over. This flexibility is especially useful when you’re traveling—and it may spare you from having to prop the mirror on a pile of books to place it level with your face.

It’s small but mighty. Like its sibling, the Simplehuman Sensor Trio, the Sensor Mirror Fold uses sensors to detect when your face is near, and it automatically shuts off when you move away. It has the same generous five-year warranty, as well. Aside from the on/off button on the back, it has no other controls, so it’s easy to use. Though it has a smaller mirror surface than our other picks, measuring only about 5 inches across, some of our staffers use it as their daily mirror at home.

The Sensor Mirror Fold is expensive for its size and minimal features. You can’t adjust the temperature or brightness of the light (though its one setting is bright and neutral). This model is also the only one of our picks equipped with just a single magnification option (10x).

As with the Sensor Trio, some reviewers have commented that the Sensor Mirror Fold would sometimes shut off while they were still in front of it, or turn on when they walked past it in the bathroom.

Like the Fancii and Amztolife mirrors, this Simplehuman model doesn’t come with a wall charger, as it’s packaged with only a Micro-USB cable. But it should work with most standard USB-A chargers .

  • Dimensions: mirror, 5 inches (diameter); overall, 9 to 12 by 5.75 inches (LW)
  • Power: rechargeable battery (includes Micro-USB cable, no charger), around five weeks of estimated battery life with moderate daily use
  • Magnification: 10x
  • Lights: LED, not adjustable
  • Finishes: rose gold, brushed silver
  • Weight: 1.25 pounds

If you want a stationary, large, lighted mirror with no magnification: Consider the Impressions Vanity Hollywood Tri-Tone XL Makeup Mirror , a corded model that’s larger and heavier than our picks. Measuring 19 by 14 inches and weighing nearly 6 pounds, it's meant to sit permanently on a vanity or dresser. It’s also not magnified; it’s just a regular lighted mirror. It proved so cumbersome, however, that no one at Wirecutter would even volunteer to take it. As Simplehuman does for its Sensor mirrors, Impressions Vanity covers its Hollywood Vanity mirror line with a five-year warranty .

If you want a sleek and modern design and don’t care about features: The Blomus Modo LED Vanity Mirror is an elegant piece of equipment that looks beautiful on a counter and is intuitive enough to use that you may not even need to read the manual. Its rechargeable battery lasts for roughly eight hours, longer than those of the Fancii and Amztolife models. However, it has only one magnification option (5x) with no additional mirror on the reverse side, it’s more expensive than the Fancii model and the Simplehuman travel mirror, and you can’t use the light while it’s charging.

Conair’s Double-Sided Lighted Makeup Mirror is nearly identical to the Amztolife model: Both offer three light colors, dimmability, a 360-degree swivel, and 1x and 10x sides. However, this Conair mirror is about three times as expensive and is corded, limiting where you can use it.

The folding Conair Halo Rechargeable Tablet Mirror is travel friendly, thanks to its thin, iPad-like shape and foldable cover, but I found the folding base/cover very tricky to use as a stand, even after reading the manual. When you unfold the base, it extends in front of and behind the mirror to allow it to stand, so using it requires a lot of surface area.

The 1X/7X Conair Oval Double-Sided Lighted Makeup Mirror has a shiny chrome finish and a thick cord, both of which make it look cheap. Also, the light wasn’t bright enough for truly detailed viewing and wasn’t adjustable.

The Deweisn Folding Travel Mirror does what it promises: It folds down to about the size of a small iPad, and it offers three light settings and dimmability. However, you can use it at only two fixed angles, and it wobbled in our tests. Like the Conair Halo folding mirror, it also requires several inches of space behind it since the cover forms the base.

Riki Loves Riki’s Riki Skinny has favorable mentions in many product reviews, but we didn’t see what the hype was all about. Its light was bright, but its rectangular body and plastic stand looked and felt cheap, despite this mirror’s being one of the most expensive models we tested. The Riki Skinny comes with a magnetic phone grip, which may appeal to those who want to record their faces to create makeup tutorials . The Bluetooth function was able to do only one task: Once the mirror connects to your phone, you can press the camera button on the phone to take a selfie.

The Vesaur Lighted Makeup Mirror is similar in performance and aesthetic to our pick from Amztolife, but the mirror isn’t rechargeable—it has to stay plugged in or take four AA batteries. It has no warranty, and it’s usually more expensive than the similar Amztolife mirror.

Whether you’re going for a natural daytime makeup look, applying fiddly false lashes , or attacking the tiniest stray hairs with your tweezers , a lighted makeup mirror can help make sure you step outside looking like the very best version of you. And because I live in an apartment with a dark, cramped bathroom, I’ve found a lighted makeup mirror to be especially indispensable for making sure my makeup is seamless, blended, and correctly calibrated for the occasion. The lighted-mirror market is a crowded one, with tons of options out there for laypeople and beauty influencers alike and a large range of price points, so I interviewed makeup enthusiasts and professionals about their favorites. Then I tested several of them myself as I went about my regular routine: plucking my eyebrows, applying highlighter, curling my hair, and even selling clothes on Depop. Below are the ten best.

What we’re looking for

Type of light.

The intensely heated incandescent lightbulbs surrounding backstage dressing-room mirrors are mostly a thing of the past. The majority of lighted makeup mirrors today — including all of the mirrors on this list — use LED bulbs , which are more energy-efficient and offer more versatility. Some mirrors have lights built in under the glass, emitting a calmer, softer light that’s ideal for natural daily makeup. They can also emit a range of light temperatures that serve different purposes: A warm light is best for applying makeup for a night out or candlelit dinner; a daylight setting is best for applying makeup for brunch or outdoor activities; and a cool light is best for a day spent in an office or classroom. Some makeup mirrors will allow you to toggle between light temperatures to suit a variety of looks and situations.

Energy source

Lighted mirrors can be battery-operated, rechargeable, or plug-in, which affects how portable the mirror is. If you plan for your mirror to take up permanent residence on your vanity, one that needs to be connected to an outlet might not bother you. But if you intend to move your mirror around or travel with it, battery-operated or rechargeable options are your best bet.

Shape and size

Makeup mirrors can either be wall-mounted or freestanding, and come in a variety of shapes and sizes, including circular, oblong, rectangular, and trifold. The best one for you really depends on personal preference, but you should also keep in mind your available space and how much room you want the mirror to take up — from a small corner of your desk to the full span of your vanity.

Magnification

Makeup mirrors come in different magnification levels, from 2x to more than 10x, to let you get up and close and personal and ensure that every aspect of your makeup is picture-perfect. Most mirrors provide a standard reflection with no magnification as well as an additional magnification between 2x and 5x, which is enough to offer a more precise and detailed view but not so much that your image becomes distorted. Mirrors with 10x magnification or above are best suited for extremely detailed work, such as intricate eyeliner art or brow tweezing.

Additional features

Makeup mirrors have gotten pretty high-tech. There are some that feature integrated speakers, phone chargers, and phone stands, dim and brighten when you touch them or automatically light up when you approach, even some that can analyze your skin. But as with any electronic device, your lighted mirror could potentially break or stop working, so you may also want to consider whether a warranty policy is in place.

Best lighted makeup mirror overall

Fancii Vera Lighted Vanity Makeup Mirror

Type of light: Natural daylight, soft white, neutral white | Energy source: Rechargeable | Shape and size: Oblong, 9.5” | Magnification: 1x only | Additional features: Touch-control, 2-year warranty

Fancii’s Vera mirror is sleek and attractive, highly functional, and fairly budget friendly as far as lighted makeup mirrors go, making it the best choice for the average person who just wants to see their face better and doesn’t need a whole lot of bells and whistles to do it. I found its elongated oval shape to be a distinct plus as it allowed me to check out my entire profile from the chest up; while circular mirrors were better for providing tight close-ups of my face, the Vera’s extended length reflected my entire head, neck, and shoulders so I could use it to dust some highlighter on my décolletage or curl and straighten my hair as well.

Though this mirror doesn’t offer any magnification, it does come with three dimmable light temperatures: a soft warm white, a cool neutral white, and a natural daylight setting. I use the soft white setting the most as it has a warmer cast to it that I find more flattering than the other two settings, which are cooler toned. The mirror tilts 45 degrees forward and backward, and there are two buttons on the front of the mirror — a button on the right that “wakes up” the mirror and adjusts the brightness, and a button on the left to switch between light temperatures. (There’s also a power button on the back, which you can press to turn off the mirror completely and conserve power; otherwise, pressing the front-right button again will send it to sleep.) Holding down the right button allows you to adjust the brightness of the light, but I generally keep it on the brightest setting, which is still fairly soft and not at all blinding. The buttons are conveniently placed and intuitive; the only drawback is that, because they are incorporated into the glass, the bottom of the mirror collects fingerprints quickly and I have to wipe it down pretty frequently.

Because the Vera is rechargeable, I can easily move it wherever I want in my apartment, and Fancii claims that the battery lasts approximately ten hours; however, I usually leave it on for 30 to 45 minutes at a time, and I’ve found that I typically charge it about once every nine-to-ten days. Though it doesn’t have any especially high-tech features like the motion sensor on my pick for a more high-end mirror below, it’s the mirror I recommend to anyone who wants to make sure they don’t have foundation streaks at their jawline without spending too much.

Best high-end lighted makeup mirror

Simplehuman Sensor Mirror Trio

Type of light: Natural daylight, candlelight | Energy source: Rechargeable | Shape and size: Circular, 8” | Magnifications: 1x, 5x, and 10x | Additional features: Automatic motion sensor, touch-control, 5-year warranty

This elegant (and expensive) Simplehuman mirror is the Tesla of lighted makeup mirrors. Where the Fancii Vera doesn’t offer any magnification, the Simplehuman’s double-sided design gives you three different magnification options: One side offers a true-size standard reflection as well as a small 10x-magnified window that I’ve found is perfect for detailed work like tweezing my brows. The other side offers 5x magnification that lets me to get up close and personal to ensure my cat-eye flick is drawn with utmost precision. The Simplehuman is also outfitted with a motion sensor, so there’s no need to fumble for a switch or button — the light automatically flickers awake when I approach it, then dims and shuts off after a period of inactivity. I found this to be especially convenient since it meant I didn’t have to clean it as often because I never smudged the glass surface with my fingerprints. I also don’t charge it as frequently as the Vera — about once or twice a month, though that may be because I reach for the Vera on a daily basis more often.

When it comes to the light itself, Simplehuman’s “Tru-Lux” technology simulates sunlight’s full color spectrum so closely that when it’s on, it’s “just like looking at yourself in the natural sunlight … And everyone knows, if you look good in the sunlight, you look good everywhere,” says Strategist senior editor Crystal Martin , who owns a single-sided model of this mirror. I’ve found that this claim bears out, as the Simplehuman’s natural-daylight setting has a more natural, balanced hue that does seem to mimic sunlight more accurately than the Vera. In addition to the daylight temperature, you can also switch to a softer, warmer candlelight temperature if you’re doing your makeup for a night out. Lightly running a finger along the rim of the light allows you to dim and brighten the light output, so you can ensure your makeup is color-correct and appropriate for any and all occasions. However, while it’s certainly luxurious, the mirror has such a high price point that I typically recommend it for more serious and experienced makeup enthusiasts who are willing to splurge.

Best travel-friendly lighted makeup mirror

Riki Loves Riki Skinny Mirror

Type of light: HD daylight | Energy source: Rechargeable | Shape and size: Rectangular, 9.5” x 13” | Magnifications: 1x and 5x or 10x | Additional features: Adjustable stand, magnetic phone clip, Bluetooth functionality, 1-year warranty

When I first opened the Riki Loves Riki Skinny Mirror, I was immediately struck by how thin it is. The mirror’s lightweight, rectangular silhouette makes it perfect for jet-setters who are frequently doing their makeup away from home, or really for anyone who is short on vanity space and wants a mirror that’s easy to tuck away when it’s not in use. The separate, foldable stand is a cinch to adjust so that you can angle the mirror however you need, and it comes with a magnification attachment that snaps on and off magnetically, so you can pop it on only when you need it for extra detail. And because it also comes with a magnetic phone holder and has built-in Bluetooth connectivity for streaming and selfie-taking, it’s especially appealing to content creators and anyone else who regularly appears on camera: As Drag Race ’s Michelle Visage told us, “Every drag queen that I know, you can’t travel without a Riki.”

Unlike the Fancii Vera and the Simplehuman Sensor mirrors above, the Riki Loves Riki Skinny mirror offers just one light temperature: the slick, high-octane lighting often seen in vlogs and makeup tutorials, which the brand bills as “HD daylight.” The brightness can be adjusted between five different settings, and Visage says it’s “bright as a football-stadium light.” I’ve rarely gone above the first two settings, as they are plenty bright for me, and the fifth is far too blinding for my purposes.

In fact, because I’m mostly doing my makeup at home for everyday situations, and not with the aim of appearing on-camera, I ultimately prefer the Fancii Vera and the Simplehuman Sensor for their more naturalistic lighting. However, I can see why the easily portable, ultra-bright Riki mirror is a favorite of folks like Stefanie Fritz , a makeup artist and content creator who wanted a mirror that was “more modern and streamlined.” Once it’s charged she can put it on the counter for a client or to film and doesn’t have to carry any cords around. Monique Jayme , a prestige beauty adviser at Ulta, told me that when she takes photos or films videos, she even uses the mirror as a de facto ring light, and she likes that its sleek, iPad-esque profile slides into a laptop case to keep the mirror safe when she’s on the go.

The phone holder and Bluetooth capabilities are also pretty handy. Pairing my phone was fuss-free, and the holder magnetically attaches to the center of the mirror so that rather than awkwardly maneuvering to press buttons on the phone itself, you can hold the mirror in front of your face for the most flattering angle, then press the “camera” button in the lower-right-hand corner of the mirror. I’m not planning to start a YouTube channel anytime soon, but I did use the mirror to take photos of my clothes for Depop, and they came out bright and clear, almost as if they were taken in an actual studio. I think the Riki is a great choice for those who travel often or who have influencer aspirations. Although the price is steep, it’s still cheaper than the Simplehuman, and according to Visage, “it’s worth every penny.”

Best handheld lighted makeup mirror

PMD Beauty Reflect Pro LED Makeup Mirror

Type of light: Soft white, neutral, natural daylight | Energy source: Rechargeable | Shape and size: Circular, 9” | Magnification: 1x and 5x | Additional features: Handheld capability, 360-degree rotation, 90-degree tilt

While a stationary mirror frees up both hands for makeup application or hair curling, sometimes you just want to get really up close and personal. A handheld mirror allows you to get inches away from your face at all angles and directions, whether you’re checking to see if your contour is sufficiently blended or monitoring that weird mole on your neck — which is exactly what I’ve been using PMD Beauty’s makeup mirror for.

The mirror comes in three parts: a sturdy base, a detachable handle, and the mirror itself, all of which easily snapped together. When I picked up each piece, I immediately noticed how lightweight they were, making this mirror another ideal travel companion. The power button and a toggle button are located on the front of the mirror, allowing you to switch between three light modes: soft white, neutral, and natural daylight. There’s also a section in the corner with 5x magnification, and the mirror itself can be rotated 360 degrees and tilted 90 degrees, which I’ve used to view myself from all sorts of odd angles, like the top of my head and underneath my chin. The handle is ergonomic and easy to hold for a long period of time. However, the mirror is fairly short, less than a foot tall. If you plan to use it as a free-standing mirror, you may need to stoop a bit in order to see yourself in it, so I suggest either placing it on a surface that’s around eye level or on a desk or vanity where you can sit down.

Best lighted compact mirror

Fancii Mila Rechargeable Compact Mirror

Type of light: Natural daylight | Energy source: Rechargeable | Shape and size: Compact, 4” | Magnifications: 1x and 10x | Additional features: Automatic shutoff, 2-year warranty

Maybe you don’t need a full-blown makeup mirror, but you still want a lightweight and portable mirror that will help with touch-ups here and there. I tested the Fancii Mila, a lighted compact mirror, by bringing it along on a night out, and it was perfect for fixing my smudged eyeliner in a dark club bathroom. It has bounced around in my bag on multiple outings now and emerged unscathed, though because I only use it on occasion, I usually have to make a note to charge it an hour or two before I head out. The Mila has the same sleek, attractive look as the Fancii Vera, though it only has one temperature setting. The clamshell shape is outfitted with two mirrors: one with standard magnification and one with 10x magnification. The light, which outlines the standard mirror, automatically turns on when you open the compact and off when you snap it shut. The mirror also comes with a velvet pouch to protect it from scratches. Because it’s so small — about the size of an ashtray — it can be tucked into “literally anything,” according to makeup artist and content creator Roxanne Latulippe . “It fits in my makeup bag, it fits in my smaller purses. I carry it everywhere with me.” Latulippe says she’s been using the mirror for over two years, and it still works great: “If you really take care of it, it’s going to last you a really long time.”

Best ring-light makeup mirror

Ilios Lighting Beauty Ring Light

Type of light: Cool, warm, blend | Energy source: Plug-in | Shape and size: Circular, 9” | Magnifications: 1x and 5x | Additional features: Phone holder, 1-year warranty

This makeup mirror from Ilios Lighting is equipped with a thick, ring-light-esque band that’s ideal for those struggling with their eyesight. Sharon Brown, a director at an assisted-living facility, bought it after resorting to doing her makeup in the car in order to see better. “I don’t mind saying it — I’m 51, I’m getting older and having eyesight issues,” Brown says. “So having that extra light with the bigger surface area really helps to be able to see what you’re doing.” In conjunction with the 5x-magnified mirror, she’s able to get so up close and personal that she’ll notice “when my skin starts peeling” as a result of her anti-aging cream. But it’s not just an older demographic that benefits from this mirror: Brown bought a second one for her 17-year-old daughter, who likes to pop out the mirror and replace it with the phone holder to take pictures and videos.

Although Brown does mention that the mirror is hefty, that hasn’t posed a problem for Stephanie Antillon , a makeup artist and content creator who is disabled. Depending on whether she’s on a video call or working with a client, she’ll often transition the mirror between a desk stand and a floor stand , so she had asked the brand how much it weighs (about 6.5 pounds) before buying it “since my capacity to carry things isn’t the best,” Antillon says. Compared to other setups she’s had, she finds the Ilios mirror to be a breeze. “It’s so easy to detach and attach,” she reports. “It means a lot that even someone who has limited mobility is able to use this product.”

Best trifold lighted makeup mirror

Easehold LED Vanity Make Up Tri-Fold Makeup Mirror

Type of light: Natural white, warm white, cool white | Energy source: Battery-operated or plug-in | Shape and size: Trifold, 7.7’” x 3.2” | Magnifications: 1x, 2x, 3x, and 10x | Additional features: 90-degree and 180-degree rotation

A trifold mirror, while typically bulkier than regular mirrors, lets you view your face from various side angles in addition to head-on. This Easehold mirror comes with four magnification levels (regular, 2x, 3x, and 10x) and holds the distinction of being the top-rated makeup mirror among Amazon reviewers, with over 8,500 five-star ratings and multiple reviews praising its rotational abilities and light settings. “The vanity design is very efficient; I can see all sides of my face so I won’t miss a spot!” one reviewer enthuses. “[It’s] a perfect size and it doesn’t take up much space.” Another agrees that viewing multiple angles of your face at once is very helpful: “The side mirrors work great for me in managing my piercings,” they say. “I [also] wax my eyebrows with it. Tweeze the stray hairs. Apply makeup. The wings fold in so it’s thin and easy to store.” It comes with three dimmable light temperatures (daytime, office, and evening) that are “bright but not glaring, and they don’t distort or filter skin tone or makeup coloration,” according to a third reviewer.

Best Hollywood-style lighted makeup mirror

Impressions Vanity Hollywood Tri Tone Plus Makeup Mirror

Type of light: Natural daylight, warm white, cool white | Energy source: Plug-in | Shape and size: Rectangular, 29” x 19” | Magnifications: 1x and 5x | Additional features: Touch control, 1-year warranty

If you want to feel like a glamorous old-Hollywood movie star, this mirror from Impressions Vanity mimics the look of lighted dressing-room mirrors — with some contemporary touches. While the mirrors of yore were studded with incandescent bulbs, this one uses LED bulbs, saving energy and allowing you to switch between natural, cool, and warm lighting. The company also offers a multitude of sizes and designs, from $100 tabletop mirrors to over-$1,000 full-size vanity mirrors, so you can choose one that best fits your space and budget.

Makeup artist and content creator Liv Reese initially bought a smaller model that could fit in her makeup case, but loved it so much that she upgraded to this larger Tri-Tone Plus version. “It has feet, so it can sit on your vanity, or you can anchor it to your wall. There’s also a button in the middle to dim the brightness,” Reese explains. “Because I shoot content all day, every day, and at different times of the day, depending on what natural light I’m getting, I’ll adjust it.”

Some larger vanity mirrors from this brand also come with features such as a digital thermostat, so that you can apply an extra blast of setting spray if it’s a hot day out, and Bluetooth connectivity and speakers, so that you can listen to your favorite playlist or podcast while getting ready. Content creator Trinity Nicole sprang for her “dream vanity,” Impression Vanity’s nearly 45-inch-long Hollywood Premiere Pro Vanity Mirror , and “is absolutely in love” with it. She reports that the speakers “are loud and clear” when she’s listening to music while doing her hair and makeup and that the mirror is so big that she can see nearly her entire outfit in it. “It gives off a very luxurious vibe to my bedroom,” she adds. “I feel like a princess.”

Best wall-mounted lighted makeup mirror

Simplehuman Sensor Wall Mounted Lighted Makeup Vanity Mirror

Type of light: Natural daylight | Energy source: Hardwired | Shape and size: Circular, 9” | Magnification: 5x | Additional features: Automatic motion sensor, telescopic swing arm, 5-year warranty

Although Havenly design director Heather Goerzen acknowledges that a hardwired, wall-mounted makeup mirror “can be a costly investment,” she thinks this sleek, stylish Simplehuman mirror “brilliantly blends form and function.” It’s a bit more simplified than the freestanding one recommended above — it offers just one light setting, “natural daylight,” and it’s only equipped with 5x magnification. However, it comes outfitted with the same automatic motion sensor as well as a telescopic swing arm, which allows it to be easily adjusted and tucked away neatly when not in use.

Best full-size wall-mounted lighted makeup mirror

IB Mirror Dimmable Backlit Mirror Original Oval

Type of light: Warm white, cool white | Energy source: Variable (outlet or hard-wiring) | Shape and size: Oval, 24” x 36” | Magnification: 1x | Additional features: RGB color option, dimmable switch, 5-year warranty

For those who want to skip squinting into a small circle, there’s also the option to splash out for a full-size, wall-mounted bathroom mirror equipped with a luminous perimeter. L.A.-based interior designer Jaqui Seerman loves installing illuminated mirrors in her clients’ bathrooms because they are both aesthetically pleasing and functional, casting “a warm and even glow that’s flattering and precise.” Seerman recommends the brand IBMirror, which offers bathroom mirrors in a cornucopia of sizes with both front and back illumination options — and since it has a plug-in version, installation is effortless, with no electrician required. The classic oval shape is an especially popular choice among Seerman’s clients, but rectangular, oblong, and round shapes are also available, so you’re guaranteed to find one that’s the perfect fit for your bathroom.

Table of Contents

Factors To Consider When Buying A Travel Lighted Makeup Mirror

Before we get started with our list, you’ll know that there’s an overwhelming number of travel-lighted makeup mirrors out there. So to help you cut through the overwhelm, you’ll want to consider some fairly important factors, such as size, portability, cost, battery life, and more.

Find A Travel Buddy!

The size of your mirror will play an important role in your decision, too small a mirror and you won’t be able to see much to do your makeup, too large and you’ll struggle to fit it into your bag and you’ll start to notice the weight of it too.

Style of traveling

Another important factor when choosing a travel lighted-makeup mirror is the type of traveling you do. If you’re camping and backpacking the size of your mirror will be important as obviously the smaller the mirror the better. If you’re planning on staying in swanky upmarket hotels, then you’ll probably already know that most of the lighting is dim so you’ll want one that lights up well and offers even lighting for the best makeup looks.

Portability and Ruggedness

When looking for a travel mirror, portability is a big factor. You’ll want the smallest and lightest mirror possible that meets all your needs. In which case the smallest you’ll really want to go is around four inches in diameter and around one pound in weight. Travel mirrors also have a pretty rough life so they’ll need to withstand everything traveling can throw at them. Opting for a clamshell design or one with a case will help protect the mirror itself.

As with everything we buy, the cost of it plays a role in whether we buy something. If you’re a makeup lover then you may want to go for quality in which case the price will be higher, if you aren’t that fussed then go for a cheaper one and if it doesn’t last it’s not the end of the world.

Power Source and Battery Life

You’ll want to consider the power source and battery life of your travel lighted mirror. If you’re a big traveler then the last thing you want is to have to carry about a big brick adapter or hundreds of charging cables. So try and opt for USB. With the battery life, you’ll want to make sure it lasts a while, as you don’t want to be constantly finding somewhere to charge it.

Best Travel Lighted Makeup Mirrors

Once you’ve considered all the factors above you’ll be ready to start mirror hunting. Here’s our pick of the seven best travel lighted makeup mirrors on the market today.

1. SimpleHuman Travel Mirror

travel mirrors magnified lighted

If you’re looking for a luxury travel mirror then this option by Simplehuman is perfect. Their magnification-lighted makeup mirror offers no compromises. It folds flat, includes a padded case, and the battery lasts up to  5 weeks on a single charge, making it potentially the best travel lighted makeup mirror out there.

With some mirrors the lighting can still be a little off giving you an inaccurate view, however, this one mimics natural daylight, so you’ll see what everyone else does. The reflective surface is around five inches in diameter and it weighs around 1.2lbs. It features a 10x magnification so it’s perfect for detailed work on eyebrows, eyelids, tweezering, and even helping you put in contact lenses.

Its unique swivel design allows it to be positioned exactly where you need it. Its robust design and padded case mean it lasts longer and can be packed in just about any bag when you’ve off galavanting around the world.

2. Fancii Portable Folding Mirror

travel mirrors magnified lighted

For a budget-friendly option, the Fancii Portable Folding Makeup Mirror is a great choice. This super-compact mirror is a close rival of the more expensive simplehuman mirror. For those worried about storage and portability then this will win hands down. Its clam-shell design mimics a traditional compact mirror, the only difference is this one contains an LED light ring around one mirror.

One mirror offers 10x magnification that’s perfect for detailed makeup and the other is slightly smaller with the ring lighting. No matter which mirror you look at though it’s easy to position so your face is always lit up. The only downside to this mirror is that the batteries are not rechargeable so you’ll have to replace them when they run out, although this is likely to be several weeks after you buy it.

Fancii are very proud and confident in their products, which is why they offer a 24-month warranty, so you know that if you have any issues you can contact them to fix it. At only 6.7 oz you’ll forget this mirror is even in your bag and would make the perfect gift for anyone, whether they are a makeup lover or not.

3. Riki Skinny Travel Lighted Makeup Mirror

Whether you want to perfect that cat-eye eyeliner, shape your brows, or even squish a few blackheads (there’s no shame, we’ve all been there), you’ll want some magnification. The Riki Skinny Lighted Mirror comes in two options; a five times magnification and a ten times magnification. Its super slim design is comparable to an iPad Pro and weighs only 1.5 pounds making it the ideal vanity mirror to take with you no matter where you go.

Another great feature of this travel lighted mirror is the fact that the lights are dimmable. So you don’t need to have them on full if you don’t want to and it will make the battery last longer. Unlike some of the others mentioned in this list, the Riki mirror is rechargeable and comes with a cord and power cube.

It’s the perfect mirror for influencers and selfie lovers as the included phone mount and Bluetooth selfie function will allow you to snap a selfie or video in no time.

4. Riki Cutie Rechargable Mirror

The Riki Cutie travel lighted makeup mirror has been continuously voted as the best on-the-go mirror by many users. Boasting a super compact design allowing it to fit into the palm of your hand, three different levels of brightness, and a kick-stand for hands-free use. However, for those that would prefer to have the mirror closer, the retractable tab lets you hold the mirror on your fingers so you still have two hands free to apply your makeup.

Weighing only 117 ounces this will easily slot into any bag or purse and you’ll barely even notice it’s there. It’s rechargeable too via USB so you won’t need to carry extra batteries around with you, power bricks, or a mass of cables. The mirror contains scratch-proof and shatter-resistant glass and comes with a handy carry case for added protection.

5. HiMirror Slide Smart Makeup Mirror

With advancements made in technology over the years, it was only a matter of time before mirrors became the next thing to be hit. So if you’re a tech fanatic and love creating great makeup styles on the go, the HiMirror Slide Smart Mirror may just be what you’re looking for.

It will completely transform your beauty regimen. While this mirror may seem simple, it can actually assess your skin condition every morning, pointing out wrinkles, fine lines, clarity, dark circles, dark spots, and more so you can effectively target problem areas. It can also track how your skin changes over time and whether you are getting closer to your beauty goals.

The LED lights have different settings depending on your environment, so you can easily tailor your makeup for the day you’re going to have. Plus the augmented reality technology allows you to try new makeup looks to give you even more inspiration. You can even link the mirror up to YouTube so you can watch and copy tutorials side by side.

6. Wobsion LED Magnifying Travel Mirror

Similar to the Fancii Portable mirror mentioned earlier, the Wobsion LED Magnifying mirror is a fraction of the cost and a great budget-friendly travel mirror. Offering one time and ten times magnification it’s ideal for applying makeup and for more detail-oriented tasks like tweezing, creating the perfect cat-eye eyeliner, and eyebrows.

It’s super lightweight making it easy to transport so you’ll have it to hand any time, anywhere. At just over 3 ounces you won’t even remember you’ve got it as it’s so lightweight. The only downside to this mirror is that you’ll need to replace the batteries when you run out of charge and they aren’t your standard AA batteries, they’re CR2032.

7. Beautifive Travel Lighted Makeup Mirror

travel mirrors magnified lighted

The last one on our list of the best travel lighted makeup mirrors is the Beautifive travel mirror . It can be used via a USB connection to a laptop or power supply or contains four AAA batteries for portable usage. Unlike other mirrors, this one only offers a seven-time magnification however there are still two mirrors.

Its pedestal design means you have two convenient storage areas for small makeup and jewelry items. The mirror is height adjustable and has a 180-degree rotation and when folded down is only 1.6 inches thick. Weighing 1.6 pounds it is a little heavier than some others but it can still be stored in any carry-on or checked baggage for travel purposes. It comes with a lovely cleaning cloth and storage bag.

It offers a more traditional vanity mirror style that’s robust and reliable for your adventures and the advanced light system gives you control and even illumination so your makeup will look good no matter where you are.

In our search, the GH Institute Beauty Lab vetted a total of 17 vanity mirrors with a range of features and price points. We first evaluated their construction quality and durability in the Lab, and 12 mirrors moved on to be tested by consumer testers at the Institute. Each tester applied makeup in the mirrors while paying special attention to their lighting features. Testers then responded to a survey, rating their satisfaction with different aspects of the mirrors on a five-point scale. After tallying up the data points, we narrowed it down to our top recommendations.

Find out more about the top lighted cosmetic mirrors, and hear from makeup artists about what to look for in a vanity mirror at the end of this guide. Want to peruse more of our top-tested beauty tools? Check out our roundups of the best hairdryer brushes , the best makeup sponges and the best red light therapy devices .

Rising to the top of the list, this mirror earned high marks for its elegant appearance, perfect size and easy-to-use lighting controls . The Vera’s polished metal construction impressed testers who complimented its sleek, chic design as "something I wouldn’t mind having displayed in my home.” Its rechargeable power source means it can be moved across your vanity cord-free.

Our testers appreciated this mirror’s long oval shape, noting that it’s “great for seeing your whole face when applying makeup.” For trying out your makeup in different lighting, the mirror features LED lighting in three color temperatures — a cool daylight, a neutral white and a warmer soft white — which are switched by touch controls on the mirror’s surface.

Best of all, the Vera’s lighting boasts a CRI (color rendering index) of 95 out of 100. Translation: It allows you to see the colors of your makeup accurately. No more mismatched foundation!

At an excellent value of under $60, the Conair Unbound Rechargeable mirror features a cordless and clean design, sturdy construction and great lighting options.

One tester raved that it’s “ the perfect size to keep on my dresser at home — it’s not too large or too small, and I’m able to see all parts of my face clearly .” This mirror’s lights had testers in awe with its three color temperatures: cool, neutral and warm, plus three brightness settings each. "I love the light surrounding the mirror! It’s vibrant, and the controls are so easy to use,” praised one tester.

Not to mention, this Conair model also comes with a 10x magnifying mini mirror that clicks magnetically to the center to help you with close-up tasks like tweezing eyebrows.

No more hunching over to do your makeup. Heavy and sturdy, the Ilios ring light mirror is much bigger and taller (21 inches, to be precise!) than other makeup mirrors on this list, a fact our GH beauty experts appreciate.

We found that the mirror swivels around easily from 1x to 5x magnifying, and the soft, diffused light doesn’t feel harsh on the eyes. One added bonus: Its built-in phone holder works great in combination with the ring light for filming videos or video conferencing. The only con worth noting is that the mirror and phone holder can't be used at the same time. That means removing the mirror first — one GH tester found that putting the mirror back in could be a tad tricky.

Dressing rooms where stars put on their show-worthy makeup looks are known for having large mirrors bordered with bright, round lightbulbs. This Hollywood-esque mirror from Conair lets you bring home some of that showbiz glamour.

Our testers admired its simple but chic design reminiscent of a classic vanity mirror . This generously sized mirror offers a longer view of yourself, so you can comfortably see your makeup, hair and top at the same time. It also has a small storage tray at the base for keeping bobby pins and other small items nearby. The LED lights can be switched between three brightness settings and warm, neutral and cool tones. Some testers noted that the plastic construction of this mirror felt a bit light.

In one sleek design, this mid-sized mirror features edge-to-edge glass with bordering built-in LED lights. "I love that it’s a daylight bulb and a white light, so the color is super accurate for color matching ," says professional makeup artist Emily Dimant .

The 5x magnifying mirror and the included phone holder use magnets for quick attachment and removal. Want to capture yourself basked in the mirror's lights? It comes with a wireless remote to both adjust lighting and snap photos on your phone via Bluetooth. Thanks to its slim yet durable design, Dimant appreciates it for both home and travel and the brand's customer service.

Jerdon 8.5" LED Lighted Tabletop Mirror

If you’re looking for a classic, round makeup mirror for your bathroom counter, consider this timeless pick from Jerdon. Our panelists rated this mirror the sturdiest among those we tested.

It conveniently swivels between a 1x view and a magnified 8x view, which one tester noted is " ideal for switching from applying makeup to plucking eyebrows ." Three lighting modes can be chosen by turning the knob at the base, though our testers felt it could be difficult to turn for those with limited dexterity. This corded mirror is available in nickel, chrome, bronze and black finishes to suit any décor.

Built to fold in half, this compact makeup mirror is primed to fit in your carry-on, purse or tote bag when traveling. "The DeWeisn Folding Lighted Makeup Mirror checks all the boxes for me," says LA-based celebrity makeup artist Elizabeth Seropian . "This mirror can be used for glam, your skincare routine and to glam your hair! "

Simply tap the touch sensor to switch between dim to bright LEDs. With a rechargeable USB, the mirror can be charged on-the-go if you have a laptop or portable charger handy. Keep in mind that the vanity mirror has no magnification if that's a key item on your list.

Simplehuman 8" Round Sensor Makeup Mirror

With its sleek, minimal design and high-tech lighting features, the Round Sensor Mirror from SimpleHuman will fit in in any modern home. Testers were impressed by the very detailed view this 8x magnifying mirror offered, saying, “ I could really see everything, it truly allowed for precise application of makeup on my face .”

This rechargeable mirror’s LED lights claim a high CRI of 95 to help you see colors accurately and offer one cool and one warm hue. It also has a telescoping stand to adjust the mirror's height. A motion sensor at the top of the mirror automatically turns on the light as you approach. While testers liked that the lights could be set to “super bright,” they found the touch control along the edge of the mirror to be finicky.

When traveling, this Amazon makeup mirror ensures you don't have to sacrifice your makeup quality for convenience. The portable lighted vanity comes nestled in a makeup case with organizing compartments.

Plus, the mirror is detachable but can also be protected by its divider to prevent it from getting scratched when jostled. Celebrity makeup artist Sebastien Tardif and co-founder of Veil Cosmetics loves it for traveling and enjoys its " convenience of makeup portability and the practical aspect of being able to apply makeup within the same mirror/case ." He adds that it comes in three different essential color settings: cool, natural and warm.

“For the ultimate precision in creating your makeup look, grab a magnified mirror!” Kaye advises. Our testers thought this 5x mirror from Jerdon felt perfectly zoomed in, saying, “the magnification of the mirror is just right so I can see my whole face, which is typically not the case with other magnifying mirrors.”

Our testers also loved that this mirror allowed them to apply makeup without glasses , saying it’s “especially helpful when applying brow and eye makeup.” This mirror’s lighting can be cycled gradually from cool to warm tones but features only one brightness. The mirror's base features an extra AC outlet for plugging in another device. Our testers also noted that this mirror was just big enough to see one's face and some wish it had a wider view.

Riki Loves Riki Skinny Smart Vanity Mirror

Skinny Smart Vanity Mirror

Complete with powerful lighting, a sturdy phone holder and a Bluetooth selfie function, the Riki Skinny is the ultimate mirror for content creators. Our testers noted that the highest of the mirror’s five brightness levels was incredibly bright — strong enough to take the place of a ring light for filming (though some testers found it to be harsh on the eyes).

A sturdy phone holder clicks on magnetically for applying makeup in the mirror while watching or recording a makeup tutorial. The mirror can also connect to your phone via Bluetooth, allowing you to take a picture or start recording by pressing the camera button on the mirror. This model’s generously sized 5x magnifying mirror can also click onto the center of the mirror. One tester raved, “I love being able to stack the magnification mirror on separately when I need it!”

Fancii Cami Mirror

Cami Mirror

The Cami mirror from Fancii packs the great lighting and magnification features of larger mirrors into a cute and petite design. Our testers loved that this model can either rest in its charging base as a cordless vanity mirror or pop out to become a lighted hand mirror.

The two-piece design is great for packing flat into a suitcase. It has a 1x side and a 5x magnifying side, with dimmable lights in three color temperatures with a high CRI of 90 on both sides. Testers also raved about the mirror’s “pretty,” “chic” and “streamlined” appearance, and it comes in four adorable pastel shades of pink, white, green and blue. Note that this mirror can tilt back 30 degrees in its base, which is a smaller range than other mirrors.

Ilios Lighting Wall Mounted Lighted Makeup Mirror

Wall Mounted Lighted Makeup Mirror

Keep a lighted makeup mirror within arm's length without it taking up counter space; the Ilios wall mounted makeup mirror features an extension arm that gets the ring light vanity exactly where you need it.

One GH editor found its softened LED light and 5x magnification effective at seeing details close-up. "A few hours into my work day, I turned it on and loved how I could notice things I can't get a great look at usually like mascara smudging and concealer creasing." Another great feature is that the cordless mirror can be turned into a handheld . "It feels super lightweight and isn't tasking to hold when I want a closer look at my face," she added. Plus, the optional suction cup takes the wall mount makeup vanity mirror on-the-go for easy attachment to bathroom mirrors.

Simplehuman Sensor Mirror Trio

Sensor Mirror Trio

The Sensor Mirror Trio from Simplehuman packs three different magnifications, thoughtfully designed features and high-quality lighting into one sleek yet sturdy mirror. One side is a 1x mirror with a small 10x mirror inset, perfect for plucking eyebrows up close and checking your overall look as you go.

The small knob lets you effortlessly swivel the mirror around to its 5x magnifying side for close-up makeup application. Said one tester, “I like how easy it is to flip it around for a different magnification." The knob can also be twisted to change the hue of the mirror’s lighting. One of our testers raved, “It’s a great size and the lighting is great for applying makeup precisely — I can clearly see my pores and where the product sits on my face.” Like the Round Sensor Mirror, this mirror has a motion-activated light that turns on as you approach and a CRI of 95 out of 100.

DeWeisn Tri-Fold Lighted Vanity Makeup Mirror

Tri-Fold Lighted Vanity Makeup Mirror

If you’re looking for a mirror with a few different magnification options for a low price, consider this DeWeisn tri-fold mirror from Amazon. It has a 1x central mirror with dimmable LED lights flanked by a 1x mirror on the left panel and 2x and 3x mirrors on the right panel.

"I like the dimmer because sometimes these can get too bright for me to actually use," a tester said. Other testers appreciated that the panels fold in, making the mirror slim and compact for storage. The mirror can swivel back 180 degrees for a range of viewing angles , though our testers felt that the mirror’s stand was a bit short and the base could be sturdier.

How we test lighted makeup mirrors

dog

For this test, we gathered 17 lighted mirrors in the Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab, including both high-end and affordable picks. We first evaluated their sturdiness by subjecting them to a tip-over test. Any mirror that broke was eliminated. We also eliminated mirrors that showed signs of lower quality such as having stick-on mirrors that fell off easily.

We then had testers apply makeup in the mirrors and respond to a survey. Testers used a five-point Likert scale to rate their satisfaction with multiple aspects of the mirrors, including their sturdiness, the quality of their lighting, the ease-of-use of their lighting controls and their appearance. Our Lab analysts then tabulated the survey data to determine our top picks.

What to look for when shopping for a makeup mirror

"

✔️ Lighting: If you want the most color-accurate lighting, consider a mirror with a high CRI, or color rendering index . CRI is a rating commonly applied to LED lights that measures how accurately they can render the colors of the objects they illuminate. A lighted mirror with a high CRI will help you see subtle color differences even when you don’t have the benefit of natural light.

Many of the mirrors on our list also offer multiple color temperatures to suit the different ways you’ll use the mirror. Cool and neutral light will sharpen your view for detailed tasks like makeup application and plucking eyebrows, while warm light is suited for nighttime uses like removing makeup or using a jade roller .

✔️ Magnification: “Magnified mirrors can help if it’s hard for you to see up close, or if you want to be very precise with something, like eyeliner, for example,” Kaye says. Our testers preferred a gentle 5x magnification for applying makeup without glasses and generally getting a closer look at their makeup. Consider a more powerful 8x magnification to see every detail for delicate tasks like shaving facial hair or applying false lashes . Finally, 10x mirrors, which tend to be small, are perfect for plucking eyebrows.

✔️ Corded or Cordless: If you want to display your vanity mirror without the clutter of cords, or even take your mirror on-the-go, opt for a cordless rechargeable mirror. If your mirror will have a more permanent spot on your bathroom counter with an outlet nearby, a corded mirror will always be ready when you need it.

Are lighted makeup mirrors worth it?

line break

Yes, says celebrity makeup artist Allison Kaye : “A lighted mirror is essential for applying makeup! It is not guaranteed you will always have impeccable daylight to create your makeup look.” Lighted mirrors can give you a clearer view of yourself even in low light conditions. Celebrity makeup artist Judi Gabbay agrees, saying, “A lighted mirror can be a big help in makeup application depending on how warm or cool the lighting is, but neutral LED lighting is your best bet.”

Just keep in mind: "When you use them, especially those that offer magnification, you can see everything, which is both good and bad," says board-certified dermatologist Joshua Zeichner, M.D. "Everyone has pores. Everyone has imperfections. When using these mirrors, remember that [the] only way to achieve perfect skin is by using a social media filter."

Beauty mirror by Riki

Best Makeup Mirror Overall: Riki Loves Riki Skinny Mirror (5x Magnification)

Don’t worry: The skinny in this mirror’s name refers to how thin it is, not to some misguided ability to make you look slimmer. It’s also an influencer’s dream —it comes with customized HD daylight lighting, five stages of dimming LED lights, a magnetic magnifying mirror, and a magnetic phone clip for the custom Bluetooth selfie function. “I’ve used this mirror daily for makeup application, especially in my dim work office, and find it to be a really useful tool in accurate foundation matching ,” says Glamour digital director Perrie Samotin .

The mirror is a favorite of professional makeup artists Ashleigh Ciucci and Douglas Otero because of its low profile, collapsible body, and white- and yellow-light options that are ideal for all skin tones. “It holds a six-hour charge at full power, so you can easily take it on vacation or to the office for afternoon touch-ups,” says Ciucci. The Riki is a bit of a splurge, but if you’re looking for a mirror that’ll make you look better on Instagram or YouTube, this is it.

  • Light type: LED

Simplehuman mirror

Best Investment Makeup Mirror: Simplehuman Sensor Mirror Trio

This top-rated, TikTok-loved vanity makeup mirror is basically the Cadillac of lighted makeup mirrors—and it comes with the price tag to confirm it. But what it sets you back financially, it more than makes up for with its high-tech capabilities and five-year warranty. First, let’s talk about its magnification. It comes with three different views: 1x, 5x, and a mini 10x half-moon that’s particularly great for seeing every single lash as you put on mascara. Its lighting capabilities are also unreal. You can run your finger along the rim of the mirror to make the lighting dimmer or brighter. And it automatically lights up whenever you look into it. “My favorite part, though, is that it’s cordless,” says Glamour contributor Lindsay Schallon . Charge it with its USB cord, and it holds its juice for up to five weeks. “My colleagues can confirm I use it an obscene amount at my desk. I don’t know what I’d do without it,” she says.

  • Light temperature: 2 light modes (full sunlight and true-to-life candlelight)
  • Magnification: 1x, 5x, 10x
  • Dimensions: 5.3 x 9.1 x 15.6 inches
  • Power source: USB-rechargeable
  • Pros: Three levels of magnification; cordless; multiple dimming settings; lights up automatically

I’m a Beauty Editor & These Are the Rare Beauty Products I Swear By

Best Cordless Makeup Mirror: Fancii Vera Vanity Mirror

“I recently upgraded from my classic Conair mirror to this one, and I’m not disappointed,” says Glamour contributor Bella Cacciatore . “It has a large surface area so I can really see what I’m doing, yet the slim design takes up less space on my vanity than more traditional mirrors (and means more room for my ever-growing lipstick stash).” It has three different lighting settings to mirror office, daytime, and nighttime lighting, so your makeup looks correct no matter what time you’re getting ready. The best part, though, is that it’s cordless—it charges via USB—so you don’t need a plug-in. “I’ve used this mirror for over two months and never needed to charge it,” says Glamour commerce editor Malia Griggs . “It’s also just really pretty.”

  • Light temperature: 3 dimmable light modes (day, evening, home)

This throwback makeup vanity mirror is like the one your mom probably still has tucked away in her bathroom cabinet. Light hits you differently in different environments—so get ready with this mirror and you’ll be prepared for all of them. “In my opinion, no other mirror compares to this. The ones with incandescent bulbs give off far too much heat and the light tends to be very yellow, which often has me skipping the bronzing powder and leaving the house looking like Casper. The light from this mirror’s bulbs are in the ‘Goldilocks zone’: not too cool, not too warm, just right,” says one Amazon reviewer .

  • Light temperature: 4 light settings (day, evening, office, home that slide from cool to warm)
  • Magnification: 1x and 5x
  • Dimensions: 9.55 x 2.5 inches
  • Power source: Wall outlet
  • Pros: Trifold design; four light options; mirror includes built-in outlet that you can plug tools into.
  • Cons: A bit flimsy; requires outlet

There’s no shortage of options if you’re looking to find the best makeup mirror. There are mirrors with built-in phone chargers and even ones that’ll tell you the weather (yes, really). To make the right choice for your skin care routine , consider these features:

Mirror size

In an ideal world, you’d have unlimited counter space to work with—but for many of us, that’s just not the case. Compact mirrors take up virtually no space and can slip into your bag for on-the-go makeup reapplication, while some countertop options are foldable to take up less space when not in use. If you’re really stretched for room, wall-mounted options might be your best bet.

Light temperature

Plenty of lighted vanity mirrors feature LED lights—something experts say is worth it, because they best mimic natural light. Many are dimmable and can cast multiple temperatures, including daylight, warm light, and cool light.

Fun features

You don’t need to be an influencer to want to record your beauty routine. Thanks to a new generation of LED makeup mirrors with built-in phone holders and chargers, it’s never been easier to film yourself in action or to follow along with a makeup TikTok tutorial. Smart mirrors can analyze skin and point out red or dry spots, and the most advanced even connect to the internet and have Bluetooth speakers in case you want to play music or listen to a podcast as you go along.

Virtually every mirror includes 1x magnification so you can see yourself normally, and the most common zoom-in is anywhere between 3x and 5x magnification, which is perfect for tasks like applying your favorite foundation or lipstick. If you’re taking on more precise challenges like tweezing your eyebrows or removing peach fuzz with a dermaplaning tool , 10x magnification or even 20x magnification comes in handy.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

travel itinerary for one week in Moscow

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

You Will Also Like: 3-Day London Itinerary

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

City Street Guides by f.d. walker: A Street Photography Guide to Moscow, Russia

moscow-guide-cover

*A series of guides on shooting Street Photography in cities around the world. Find the best spots to shoot, things to capture, street walks, street tips, safety concerns, and more for cities around the world. I have personally researched, explored and shot Street Photography in every city that I create a guide for. So you can be ready to capture the streets as soon as you step outside with your camera!

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the largest city in Russia and second largest in Europe by population ( Istanbul is #1). An urban, cosmopolitan metropolis with more than enough glitz and glam to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of Soviet era roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of West meets Russia atmosphere and beauty that provides plenty of unique interest. The Red Square is as famous as it gets, but there’s so much more to this city, including the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen. It would take years to capture all of Moscow, but that means you have an endless amount of areas to discover.

travel mirrors magnified lighted

So here’s a Street Photography guide so you can be ready to capture all that Moscow has to offer before you even arrive!

  • Patriarch’s Pond
  • Old Arbat Street
  • Maroseyka Street
  • Tverskoy Boulevard

Top 5 Street Spots:

1. red square.

The Red Square is the most famous square in not just Russia, but all of Eastern Europe. The name actually doesn’t come from the color of the bricks or communism, but from the name in Russian, Krásnaya, once meaning “beautiful” before its meaning changed to “red.” This large plaza is what you see on the cover of guide books and magazines for Moscow, with St. Basil’s Cathedral being the center piece next to Lenin’s Mausoleum surrounded by the Kremlin Wall. Of course, the Red Square attracts hordes of tourist due to the main attractions, but all that activity around an interesting atmosphere does provide street photo opportunities. It’s also the central square connecting to the city’s major streets, providing a good starting point to explore outward.

travel mirrors magnified lighted

You’ll also find the popular pedestrian only Nikolskaya Street connecting the Red Square to Lubyanka Square. This line of expensive shops includes plenty of activity, while also leading you to another popular square. Filled with history rivaling any city, the Red Square and surrounding areas are the heart and soul of Russia.

2. Patriarch’s Ponds

Patriarch’s Ponds is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Moscow. Despite the name being plural, there’s only one large pond, but it’s worth a visit with your camera. It’s a popular spot for locals and expats to come relax or take a stroll around the pond. You get an interesting mix of young and old too, from young love to “babushkas” feeding pigeons. It’s a very peaceful park atmosphere in one of the nicer areas within the city center, while bringing enough activity for street photography.

The pond is shallow and in the winter becomes a popular spot for ice-skating too. The area is also well-known for the location in the famous Russian novel, The Master and Margarita.

3. Old Arbat (Stary Arbat)

Old Arbat is the most famous pedestrian street in Moscow, and dating back to the 15th century, also one of its oldest. Originally, it was an area of trade, but soon became the most prestigious residential area in Moscow. During the 18th century, Arbat started attracting the city’s scholars and artists, including Alexander Pushkin. Cafes lined the streets and impressive homes filled the neighborhood. Since then, New Arbat street was created as a highway in the area, while Old Arbat was paved for a 1km pedestrian only walkway.

travel mirrors magnified lighted

Due to the historic buildings, famous artists that lived here, and the bohemian atmosphere, Old Arbat has become a big attraction for tourists today. Now, there’s a mix of cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, street performers, street merchants and other attractions for visitors, and some locals, to come enjoy. It can get really busy here and there’s usually something interesting going on so it’s a good street to come walk with your camera for guaranteed life.

4. Gorky Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

travel mirrors magnified lighted

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Maroseyka Street

Maroseyka Street is a popular area not too far from the Red Square. The long, winding street turns into Pokrovka and is lined with restaurants, cafes, bars and places to stay. It’s actually where I like to stay when I’m in Moscow due to its location and solid street photography opportunities itself. You have Kitay-gorod station near and if you keep walking southwest, you’ll get to the Red Square. But if you walk northwest, as it changes to Pokrovka, you can find a long street of activity for photography with its own interesting atmosphere.

6. Tverskoy Boulevard

Tverskoy Boulevard is the oldest and longest boulevard in Moscow, beginning at the end of Nikitsky Boulevard, and finishing at Pushkin Square, a spot to come for activity itself. The boulevard is made up of two avenues, with pedestrian walkways in-between. You’ll find grass, shrubbery, trees, benches and more walking it’s almost kilometer length. Many people come here to enjoy some relaxation, walk their dog, or just to use it to walk wherever they’re going. Its center location also provides a nice place to walk with your camera near plenty of other spots you’ll want to check out anyway.

Sample Street Walk:

For a full day of Street Photography, covering some of the best spots, you can follow this sample street walk for Moscow:

  • Start your morning walking around the Red Square (1), while exploring the surrounding area, including Nikolskaya Street
  • Then walk northwest to Patriarch’s Ponds (2) and slowly walk the pond and surrounding area with your camera
  • Next, walk east to the Pushkin Monument and stroll down Tverskoy Boulevard (6)
  • Once Tverskoy Boulevard (6) ends, it will turn into Nikitsky Boulevard. Follow this down until you get to the start of Old Arbat Street (3), across from Arbatskaya station
  • After you’re done walking down Old Arbat Street (3) for more street photography, spend some time checking out Moscow’s beautiful metro stations
  • To finish off the day with more street photography, get off the metro near Red Square (1) again, Maroseyka Street (5) or wherever you’re staying for the night.

3 Things I’ll Remember about Shooting in Moscow:

1. museum metro.

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

travel mirrors magnified lighted

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

travel mirrors magnified lighted

Since there are so many stations, here are some of my favorites to check out:

  • Novoslobodskaya
  • Mayakovskaya
  • Elektrozavodskaya
  • Komsomolskaya
  • Ploschad Revolyutsii
  • Dostoyevskaya
  • Prospekt Mira

2. Moscow is Big

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

travel mirrors magnified lighted

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

3. Cosmopolitan Mix of East meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more western cosmopolitan package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while also pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline, that continues to grow, and endless modernities, but with soviet nostalgia and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

travel mirrors magnified lighted

Mixed in with this grand western cosmopolitan atmosphere, is a strong national pride in Russia. This includes their famous leader, Vladimir Putin. Maybe no other place will you see a country’s leader more often. All over, from the pricey tourist shops to the underground walkway stalls, you’ll find goods with Putin’s likeness covering them. From t-shirts to magnets to Matryoshka dolls. There’s a strong national pride that can be seen around the city, which also extends to their leader. Moscow is many things. It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet era, and a whole lot more.

What To Do For a Street Photography Break?:

Eat at a stolovaya.

Stolovayas are Russian cafeterias that became popular in the Soviet days. You grab a tray and walk down the line of freshly prepared local dishes, and select whatever you want from the chefs. They’re usually inexpensive and a much better value than restaurants, while giving you the opportunity to try from a wide selection of everyday Russian food. They’re also very tasty. I always include some borsch on my tray and go from there. The places themselves are all over Moscow and usually come with Soviet-era aesthetics to complete the experience.

Street Safety Score: 7

*As always, no place is completely safe! So when I talk about safety, I’m speaking in general comparison to other places. Always take precaution, be smart, observe your surroundings and trust your instincts anywhere you go!

Being the 2nd largest city in Europe with over 12 million people, you’re going to have your dangerous areas, but for the most part, it feels safe walking around. Russia is statistically higher in crime compared to most of Europe, but this generally doesn’t apply to tourists and visitors. Around the Red Square and surrounding city center, you should feel completely safe walking around. Pick pocketing can happen, but no more than other touristic places. I always explore Moscow freely without coming across too much to worry about. It’s a spread out city, though, so of course it matters where you are. Just use basic street smarts, know where you are and Moscow shouldn’t give you a problem.

travel mirrors magnified lighted

People’s Reaction Score: 7

Moscow is fast paced, big city life, which usually means people aren’t too concerned with you, or your camera. I don’t find people notice or pay much attention to me when I’m out taking photos in Moscow. For the most part, people just go about their day. You shouldn’t get too many looks or concern. But it can depend on the area you are in. The more you stick out, the more you might get noticed with suspicions. I’ve never had any problems in Moscow, or Russia, but just be careful who you’re taking a photo of if you get out of the city center. Other than that, it’s about average for reactions.

travel mirrors magnified lighted

Street Tips:

Learn the alphabet .

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

travel mirrors magnified lighted

Use the metro

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have plenty of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

travel mirrors magnified lighted

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

Explore other areas if you have time

Moscow is really big. While most people stay around the Red Square within the Boulevard Ring, there’s so much more to the city. I covered some other spots outside of this circle, but if you really want to see the city, you’ll need time. If you do have time, some other areas I’d check out first are Zamoskvarechye, along some of the south and western Moscow.

Inspiration:

For some more inspiration, you can look through the Street Photography of Moscow photographer Artem Zhitenev  and check out 33 of my photos taken in Moscow .

Conclusion:

Moscow’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it might bring a different atmosphere than you expect. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. It can feel like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

travel mirrors magnified lighted

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.

I hope this guide can help you start to experience some of what Moscow contains. So grab your camera and capture all that Moscow has to offer for Street Photography!
