Whether you have a family trip coming up, need something for the occasional overnight visit, or are shopping for a baby registry, a good travel crib is essential. Sometimes called playards, these foldable contraptions offer a secure place for your child to sleep or play when you're on the go.

According to neonatologist Michael H. Goodstein, MD, FAAP, they're "a safe alternative to a crib, as long as the product is consistent with the mandatory guidelines established by the CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission)." But, beyond safety considerations, not all portable cribs are created equal.

Travel cribs vary by size, weight, features, and functionality. We tested 19 models to narrow it down to the most user-friendly, portable, durable, and easy-to-clean options. (See more about our in-depth testing process below.) Our number one pick is the Maxi-Cosi Swift Play Yard, a sturdy, stain-resistant travel crib that takes less than two minutes to pack up.

Best Overall

Maxi-cosi swift lightweight portable play yard.

  • Ease of Setup 4.8 /5
  • Durability 5 /5
  • Portability 4.5 /5
  • Quality 5 /5

With an adjustable mattress and easy folding mechanism, this sturdy crib grows with your child and can be taken on any excursion.

It's not the lightest option we tested.

Clocking nearly perfect scores in all our tests, our top choice is the Maxi-Cosi Swift Play Yard. Even after six months of use, we loved how lightweight this portable crib is, making it super easy to set up and take down. Though the leg-folding mechanism is a little different than most models, we assembled it in less than three minutes and packed it back up in under two. It also has all the comfort and safety features we'd want in this type of product. The mattress lays flat on its own, you don't need to hook Velcro straps to keep it down, which is great for saving set-up time. The supportive yet bouncy design barely budged when we dropped a 25-pound sandbag on top, and the frame held strong too.

We're also big fans of the bassinet feature. For newborns and infants, you can detach the mattress from the bottom and raise it up for easier access to your baby. Then, when your child grows, lower it back down to prevent them from climbing out.

At 18 pounds, this travel crib is on the heavier side. However, it seems durable and long-lasting. The high-quality materials appear stain-resistant. All things considered, we think the price is right on point.

Best Budget

Munchkin travel bassinet.

  • Ease of Setup 5 /5
  • Durability 4.5 /5
  • Quality 4.5 /5

This lightweight, compact sleeper is incredibly easy to set up and pack up, a perfect option for traveling with newborns.

It doesn't come with a carry bag, and the weight capacity is 15 pounds.

On a budget? Check out the Munchkin Brica Travel Pod. This on-the-go sleeper can be set up in one minute and packs back up in less than 30 seconds. At just three pounds, we were also impressed with the lightweight design. When it folds down, it's super small and doesn't take up a lot of space even though it doesn't come with a carry bag. The lightweight, compact design is undoubtedly convenient, but bear in mind the capacity is 15 pounds. In other words, you'll need something bigger once your child is about 6 months old.

The Details: 30 x 21 x 12 inches (overall) | 3 pounds | 15-pound weight limit

Best Splurge

Uppababy remi portable playard.

Buy Buy Baby

  • Portability 5 /5

This durable, splurge-worthy crib is super easy to assemble and packs into a conveniently compact bundle.

It's somewhat heavy (but super sturdy), and the carry bag is sold separately.

If you're open to splurging on a high-quality travel crib, UppaBaby won't disappoint. It's incredibly easy to set up, you just pull it out of the box and snap it into place. When folding it back up, the frame wraps into the mattress to create a conveniently compact bundle. After six months of use, we found it to be a great option to even leave up as an extra home crib.

We also appreciate the safety features, including padded edges, hidden zippers, and an elevated bassinet attachment. It's also pretty light and portable. So, while the price is steep (and you'll have to buy the carry bag separately), in the end, we think it's worth the investment for its durability and overall features.

The Details: 40.5 x 28.5 x 26 inches (overall) | 28.5 x 11 x 10 inches (packed) | 22.5 pounds | 20-pound weight limit

Best Compact

Kidco peapod plus.

  • Durability 4 /5

The ultra-lightweight, compact design is easy to take on the go and folds up into its carry bag in seconds.

It's not recommended for children under 6 months and the bottom of the crib is made of fabric that can be slippery.

For something more compact, consider the KidCo PeaPod Plus. We were able to set up this sleeper and fold it back down in almost no time. The ultra-lightweight design folds effortlessly into its included bag, and the carry straps make it easy to take on the go.

The tent-like design can be used indoors or for outdoor naps in your backyard, on the beach, or on family camping trips . While it's not the most structured, it holds its shape enough to provide a safe sleeping spot for a small child. Despite the compact size, bear in mind it's designed for kiddos between 6 months and 5 years.

The Details: 46 x 34 x 22 inches (overall) | 19 x 19 x 3.5 inches (packed) | 3.5 pounds | 100-pound weight limit

Best Lightweight

Chicco lullago anywhere portable bassinet.

  • Value 4.5 /5

This remarkably lightweight-yet-sturdy bassinet is easy to set up, move from room to room, and bring on the go.

The maximum weight is 20 pounds, and it doesn't come with a carrying case.

We were able to assemble and fold up the Chicco LullaGo in under a minute. This travel bassinet is remarkably lightweight yet still sturdy. After six months of use, it's holding up well and is a great option with a minimalist design. Though we wish it came with a carrying case, it's easy to move from room to room or bring on the go. We also like that all the covers are conveniently machine-washable.

Dr. Goodstein warns against using this product past the newborn stage, as the elevated platform isn't designed for larger infants. "When the babies are too old, they can fall out of it," he says. "It's just not safe."

The Details: 30 x 28 x 18 inches (overall) | 28 x 18.5 x 5.5 inches (packed) | 12 pounds | 20-pound weight limit

Best Playard

Chicco alfa lite lightweight travel playard.

This playard boasts easy setup, a sturdy design, and various safety features to keep your kiddo secure during naps or playtime.

It doesn't fold down as small as other options we tested.

The Chicco Alfa Lite can be assembled in three minutes and folded back up in less than 60 seconds. Thanks to the helpful 'push' buttons and intuitive design, you don't even need to consult the instructions for set-up and take down. Though the legs fold out with ease, the frame also feels sturdy, like it'll hold up well over time.

Designed for on-the-go sleeping or safe, secure playing, this playard has lockable side zippers and a mattress that buckles to the base. You can also unzip the side to let your child climb in and out during playtime. The mattress is a little flimsy, but other than that, we have no complaints. After six months of use, we love that this is even a good option to set up during playdates.

The Details: 43 x 29 x 25 inches (overall) | 21 x 9.5 x 9.5 inches (packed) | 13 pounds | 30-pound weight limit

Best for Car Travel

Baby joy travel crib 2-in-1 playpen.

  • Portability 4 /5

This lightweight, ultra-portable crib is a breeze to set up and pack into its carrying case.

The handles are somewhat short, making it hard to avoid dragging it.

The Baby Joy Travel Crib takes a mere three minutes to set up and folds up in a flash. It folds and unfolds easily, kind of like a camp chair. Once you know where the lock button is, the frame is incredibly simple to put together. After six months of regular use, we love that this can be used inside for naps and even outside for contained playtime.

The entire thing seems high-quality, which is impressive, considering the very reasonable price tag. Weighing only 11 pounds, it's one of the lightest options we tried. While we appreciate the included case, the short handles make it hard to avoid dragging it on the ground when carrying it — for shorter folks, at least. This portable crib folds up pretty compactly but is still probably too tall for an overhead bin, which is why we recommend it for family road trips .

The Details: 45.5 x 31 x 27 inches (overall) | 23.5 x 20.5 x 7 inches (packed) | 11 pounds | 33-pound weight limit

Best Stability

4moms breeze go playard.

  • Value 3.5 /5
  • Quality 4 /5

Set-up is straight forward and quick.

It's on the heavier side.

With less than four minutes to set up and only two minutes to take down, this is one of the easiest travel cribs to use. Once unfolded, you simply drop in the mattress and attach it to the frame using velcro straps to keep it stable and secure. The first time we assembled this crib, we didn't even need to read the manual because it was such an intuitive process.

In addition to its ease of use, this is one of the most sturdy and high-quality of all the travel cribs we tested. The material doesn't shift around at all and the slight suspension and shocks improve safety for any kiddo. We also love that it comes with its own travel case that helps keep the crib compact and organized while on the go. For anyone looking for an entry level travel crib that's simple and sturdy, this is a high-quality and reliable option.

The Details: 43 x 30 x 29 inches (overall) | 23.2 pounds | 30-pound weight limit

Travel + Leisure / Leticia Almeida

Travel + Leisure editors selected 19 travel cribs to try firsthand. We started by timing how long it took to assemble them based on the brand's instructions, noting any hiccups they ran into along the way. After assessing the features and materials, we lifted them up and moved them around the room to see how light and portable they were once assembled.

To evaluate the sturdiness, we shook the frames and dropped a sandbag into the center to see how well they could support a small child standing up or jumping around. Finally, we timed how long it took to fold down the cribs and put them in their carrying cases, noting how heavy they were when packed up. Each model was scored for ease of setup, portability, durability, ease of cleaning, quality, and value, and those with the highest average ratings were selected for this roundup.

Other Travel Cribs We Liked

KidCo Peapod Portable Travel Bed : This tent-style sleeper quickly pops open, and the padded base is a cinch to snap on. While the fabric is somewhat thin, it's super lightweight and easy to carry, too. However, in the end, we just liked the other KidCo model better.

Baby Delight Snuggle Nest Harmony Portable Infant Lounger : We liked the small, lightweight design of this product. But since it's technically a lounger rather than a crib, it's really designed to be a safe place to set your infant down — not necessarily a place to sleep. When in doubt, check with your pediatrician before using it.

Pamo Babe Deluxe Portable Nursery Center : While this crib was incredibly easy to set up, we thought it lacked durability as it had a tendency to collapse as it grew closer to the weight limit.

Tips for Buying a Travel Crib

Put safety first.

Whether for travel or nightly sleep, safety should be a top priority when buying a crib. Per the CPSC's current guidelines , the mattress should be relatively firm to prevent rolling. And you shouldn't add extra padding or bedding until your child is at least 12 months old, as the materials can pose a suffocation risk.

"Get a travel crib that is current from a major brand," says Dr. Goodstein, "and use the mattress that's included." He adds that, aside from a sleep sack, you really don't need anything other than a mattress and a tight-fitting crib sheet.

Know the important features

Travel cribs come with various features — some for safety and others for comfort or convenience. This may include user-friendly foldability, a carrying case, a firm mattress, padded edges, concealed zippers, or breathable mesh sides.

"Some have a bassinet feature, which is convenient for new mothers (not bending over) and small/younger newborns," says Dr. Goodstein. "With or without, they should be used properly, following the weight, age, and developmental limitations set within the product instructions and warnings."

Consider the type of trip you're taking

When browsing options, consider the type of trip you're taking and where you plan on using the crib. If you're traveling by plane , some (but not all) airlines allow you to check portable cribs for free (along with travel strollers and car seats). But if you're not checking baggage, make sure it's small enough to pass as a carry-on.

Some small travel cribs can be folded up super compactly and even tucked inside a suitcase. But larger options that come with their own carry bags will usually need to be toted around separately. If you just need something for the occasional overnight, you have more flexibility in terms of size.

The main difference between a travel crib and a regular crib is that the former is typically foldable and relatively lightweight. But as long as it has a proper mattress and sides that prevent rolling off, you can use a travel crib as a regular crib.

"The newer ones, for the most part, should be fine," says Dr. Goodstein. "If you're going to use a sheet in there, make sure it's a fitted sheet for that specific type of crib."

Travel crib mattresses are roughly 38 x 24 inches, which is the size of a mini crib mattress. Getting a fitted sheet in the proper size is crucial, as loose fabric can be dangerous for sleeping babies. "These little ones don't have good head [or hand] control — they can't brush something off of their face," explains Dr. Goodstein. "Something as light as a sheet can cause suffocation."

Some travel cribs fit into overhead compartments, but it varies by model. While it's different for each airline, the maximum dimensions for carry-ons is usually 22 x 14 x 9 inches, so be sure to measure the packed-up size before your trip.

While most airlines will check strollers and carseats for free, travel cribs are considered luggage and will be charged as such. Be sure to check with your specific airline in advance to determine what baby gear is complimentary.

Travel Crib Tips for Safe Sleep Away From Home

Dr. Harvey Karp

On This Page

What is a travel crib, are travel cribs safe, what should i look for when buying a travel crib, is it okay to buy a used travel crib, how can i help my baby sleep in a travel crib, can you travel with snoo.

Whether you’re heading to a long-awaited vacation, visiting family, or you simply need an extra sleep space in your home, travel cribs are a must-have item for many parents. But before you buy the trendiest travel crib—or borrow a nearly-ancient play yard—you’ll want to make sure it’s as safe and functional as it can be. Here’s what parents should look for when buying a travel crib.

A travel crib is another name for a portable crib. Travel cribs are compact, lightweight, and especially designed for easy transport. Sometimes “play yard” and “travel crib” are used interchangeably, but they’re not always the same. For example, play yards tend to feature mesh sides or another non-rigid construction. While travel cribs can mimic that, some portable cribs are wood and foldable. Generally, travel cribs and play yards can be used from birth to age 3.

Yes. Fortunately, the safety standards for travel cribs were upgraded over 10 years ago, so models currently sold in America have passed rigorous stability, entrapment, and structural integrity tests. (The same is true for play yards .) But for even more peace of mind, I recommend looking for travel cribs or play yards with a JPMA (Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association) certification, which means they are checked annually to prove they meet or exceed all safety standards for infant products. Of course, it’s imperative to use travel cribs safely , which means always…

Place your baby on the back. All babies under a year old should be put on their back for all naps and night sleep.

Make sure the travel crib is empty. Keep the travel crib free of all loose bedding , pillows, loungers, and stuffed toys.

Use the proper mattress. Only use the play yard mattress provided by the manufacturer—and never double up or add a soft topper. Remember, your baby’s mattress needs to be firm, whether they’re snoozing in a full-size crib, a bassinet, or a travel crib!

Only use a well-fitted sheet. Portable crib fitted sheets need to be tucked under the mattress, so the sheet can’t snap up and become a suffocation risk.

Keep the sides up: Never leave a baby in a mesh play yard with the side lowered or your little one could get trapped between the side and the floorboard.

Remove the changing table. If your play yard features a raised changing table, remove it when your child is in the play yard so they don’t risk entrapment .

Know when to retire your travel crib. Discontinue using the play yard or travel crib when your little one can easily climb out.

While safety, of course, is number one, there are other points to consider when buying a travel crib, such as:

Sturdiness: If you’re able, test out the travel crib before buying. You’ll want to feel first-hand how sturdy it is. Does it feel a bit wobbly when you press on the top? If so, choose another.

Functionality: Buying a play yard for an infant? Look for one with a bassinet feature where you detach the mattress from the bottom and safely raise it up so you can more easily lift your baby in and out of the crib. At the same time, you’ll want to make sure your portable crib has enough space for a toddler to rest and play comfortably when it’s time to lower the mattress.

Size and weight: For many, the point of a portable crib is to be able to travel with it, so be sure it’s easy to fold and carry. If you’re a frequent flier, you also want a travel crib that’s small enough to meet airline size requirements— and light enough to lug through the airport!

Weight limit: While travel cribs with mattresses at floor-level might not have a weight limit, most other travel cribs/play yards have a recommended weight max of around 25 to 30 pounds. Either way, it’s always smart to double check.

Ease of use: The last thing you want to do when you arrive at your destination with a cranky baby is take 10 minutes to assemble the travel crib! For example, look for play yards that unfold at the push of a button…and lock into place easily.

Maintenance: Many portable cribs feature removable, machine-washable fabric that can be a gamechanger when dealing with diaper blowouts and other unexpected oopsies.

While it may be tempting to borrow a travel crib or a play yard—or buy one used—proceed with caution. Nearly two million play yards have been recalled before new federal safety standards were put into place in 2013, so anything older could be dangerous. Plus, it wasn’t until 2022 that replacement mattresses used in play yards and portable cribs were required to meet the same safety requirements as the original mattress! Before then, babies were at risk for getting trapped and suffocating in a gap between the mattress and the side of the play yard.

As a pediatrician, I lean toward buying new so you know for-sure your travel yard isn’t missing any parts and meets the most recent safety standards. But I also know that buying new can be hard for some families. So, if you are buying a secondhand travel crib or are borrowing one, keep the following in mind:

Look for important numbers. If the travel crib is missing a label that includes the manufacturing date (or lot code) and manufacturer’s contact info, don’t buy it .

Check for recalls. Found the label with all the travel crib’s manufacturing info? Great. Now check to see if it’s been recalled .

Inspect for damage. Make sure the mesh of the play yard and the top rails are free of tears, holes, or loose threads . Check for missing or loose parts and ensure the travel crib is fitted with the manufacturer’s original mattress.

If you know ahead of time that your baby will be snoozing in a play yard or travel crib during a trip, arrange to have them sleep in one at home first. The more familiarity the better! Speaking of familiarity, recreating your baby’s sleep surroundings is key, too. That means, dim the lights about 30 minutes before night-night, play the same white noise your little one loves, and wrap your baby in the same sleep sack or swaddle they’re used to. If your baby has been sleeping in SNOO and swaddled in a SNOO Sack , use SNOObie or SNOObear to recreate SNOO’s white noise—and use the Sleepea 5-Second Swaddle in the travel crib. Sleepea is the exact same expert design as the award-winning SNOO Sack, minus the “wings” that secure SNOO sleepers into the bassinet.

If your baby has been blissfully sleeping in SNOO , you may be wondering if SNOO is portable. While SNOO is not a travel crib, many SNOO users do travel with their beloved bassinet! If you’re considering traveling with SNOO, know that, when packed and reboxed , your SNOO will take up about 8 cubic feet in your trunk. At the same time, SNOO can likely be checked as oversized luggage on your flight. (Call ahead!) But if packing and traveling with SNOO is impossible, don’t worry! Babies tend to sleep okay on trips without their SNOO…as long as:

Your stay is under one week.

Your baby has slept well in SNOO for one to two months.

You continue to swaddle your baby .

You use a strong white noise machine while away.

What do i look for in a travel crib.

Aside from being multi-functional, the biggest benefit of owning a portable crib is that it provides a safe, familiar sleep environment for your little one no matter where they are. So look for the same things you would for their everyday sleep environment. Opt for a travel crib that provides optimal breathability and comfort. And, look for a mattress that is completely washable. This will allow you to provide your child with a cleaner, more hypoallergenic environment for sleep and play.

What is the right size travel crib for my baby?

Like any crib, you’ll want to make sure your new travel crib is the correct size for your little one’s age and weight. Some are designed only with infants in mind, which means your baby can outgrow them relatively quickly. The Newton Travel Crib & Play Yard is designed for newborns all the way through the toddler years. And with a surface area that is roughly 2x larger than the competition, it allows for an extended lifetime of use and tons of room for better sleep and play.

Why opt for a multi-purpose travel crib?

If you’re investing in a travel crib, it’s a good idea to choose an option that can also be used as a play area (and potentially for other purposes too). The key is to make sure the crib is spacious enough for your little one to play in when they’re not sleeping. You may also want to opt for a play yard that offers a bassinet insert. This option provides added versatility during baby’s first months, and can be used either as your baby’s primary bassinet or as a safe sleep environment when traveling.

Tumi – oxford compact carry-on, samsonite – underseat carry-on spinner, delsey – chatelet soft underseat bag, travelpro – platinum elite underseat bag, frequently asked questions about underseat carry-on bags.

As an avid traveler, choosing the right luggage is one of the most important decisions you’ll make. The perfect luggage allows you to pack all your travel essentials efficiently while complying with airline regulations. This is especially true when it comes to under-seat luggage.

Under-seat bags offer unparalleled accessibility to your in-flight necessities. But to enjoy their benefits, you need a bag that fits under the seat and adheres to the dimensions specified by airlines. With tight spaces in aircraft cabins, every inch matters.

This comprehensive guide will teach you everything you need to know about mastering under-seat luggage dimensions. You’ll learn how to:

  • Differentiate under-seat bags from other carry-on luggage
  • Understand size restrictions set by different airlines
  • Pick the ideal dimensions for your travel needs
  • Shop for a feature-rich under-seat bag
  • Utilize packing tips to maximize your under-seat luggage

Follow these tips to choose a perfectly sized under-seat bag for stress-free travels. Let’s get started!

under seat luggage

Under-seat luggage refers to small bags that can fit in the space under the seat in front of you on an airplane. They are designed to be compact and easy to store during flights.

The main purpose of under-seat luggage is to allow easy in-flight access to essentials like snacks, medications, electronics, travel documents, and other things you may need during the journey. You won’t have to disturb fellow passengers by frequently accessing the overhead cabins.

Under-seat bags come in different styles including:

  • Backpacks – Hands-free and mobile
  • Tote bags – Roomy with multiple pockets
  • Rolling under seat – Smooth maneuverability

Calpak Backpack

Before packing your underseat bag, it helps to understand the size restrictions. The specific dimensions can vary slightly by airline, but most underseat bags should adhere to these general guidelines:

  • Width: no wider than 18 inches/45 cm
  • Depth: no deeper than 14 inches/35 cm
  • Height: no taller than 9 inches/22 cm

Some airlines specify the underseat bag must fit completely under the seat in front of you, not obstructing legroom or the aisle. Be sure to check your airline’s website for their specific underseat luggage dimensions.

Tip : Look for underseat bags around 16 x 14 x 12 inches (40 x 35 x 30 cm). This leaves a bit of wiggle room if dimensions are enforced.

To visualize standard underseat carry-on size, it’s roughly equivalent to a women’s purse, laptop bag, or small backpack. With some careful packing techniques, you can fit all your essentials!

Choosing the Best Underseat Bag for Your Needs

With underseat luggage dimensions in mind, let’s explore how to pick an ideal underseat carry-on bag for your trip:

Underseat bags come in both hardside and softside designs:

  • Hardside: Rigid shells like plastic or polycarbonate. Fixed structure with little flexibility.
  • Softside: Panels of fabric sewn into expandable compartments. Allows adjustments to contents.

calpak under seater hardshell

For underseat stowage, softside bags often work better to compress contents and maximize capacity. However, hardsides provide rigid protection and can force you to pack sparingly. Pick the style aligned with your packing personality!

Another choice is wheeled vs. non-wheeled underseat bags:

  • Wheeled : Built-in wheels and retractable handle like a carry-on suitcase. Easy to transport between airport and gate.
  • Non-wheeled : No wheels or handle. Must be carried by hand or shoulder strap. Lighter weight but less convenient transport.

Wheeled bags allow you to quickly move through terminals without lugging weight on your shoulders. However, they take up legroom once stowed underseat.

If you don’t mind carrying your bag, a non-wheeled underseat bag optimizes in-flight space. But it’s a trade-off for airport convenience.

Look for an underseat bag with thoughtful organization to keep your items secure and readily accessible in-flight:

  • Dedicated pockets: For electronics , toiletries, medications, documents
  • Interior dividers: To separate clothes, shoes , accessories
  • Expansion zippers: Adds depth when needed
  • Exterior pockets/clips : For quick-grab items like phones, tickets, water

Multiple compartments make it easy to stay organized when frantically grabbing items on a plane. Well-designed underseat bags act like your personal in-flight closet!

Some other features to consider when selecting an underseat carry-on bag:

  • Trolley sleeve: Slides over luggage handle for easy transport
  • USB port: Built-in USB charger to power devices
  • TSA lock : Special integrated lock that airport security can inspect
  • Identification: Underseat bags can look very similar – add a tag or ribbon for easy identification

Under-seat luggage is a versatile and accessible storage option that plays a crucial role in keeping travel essentials at your fingertips during various travel adventures. Whether you’re flying, taking a train, or embarking on a road trip, having quick access to items like:

  • Travel documents : Passport , boarding pass, ID, travel itinerary, and any necessary visas.
  • Electronics : Laptop , tablet, smartphone, chargers, and headphones.
  • Valuables : Wallet, cash, credit cards, jewelry, and other important items.
  • Medications : Any prescription medications or over-the-counter remedies you may need during the flight.
  • Personal care items : Hand sanitizer, lip balm, facial tissues, and wet wipes.
  • Reading materials : Books, magazines, or e-readers for entertainment during the flight.
  • Snacks : Non-perishable snacks to keep you nourished during the journey.
  • Water bottle : An empty refillable water bottle to fill up after passing through security.
  • Sweater or scarf : A light layer in case the cabin gets chilly.
  • Eye mask and earplugs : For a more comfortable rest during the flight.
  • Change of clothing : A fresh set of clothes in case of luggage delays or other unexpected situations.
  • Comfort Items : Travel pillow, blanket, or any other personal comfort items to ensure a more relaxed and cozy journey.

To enjoy the perks of under-seat luggage, you need a bag that actually fits under an airline seat.

Different airlines have specific size restrictions for this space:

  • American Airlines – 18 x 14 x 8 inches
  • Jet Blue – 17 x 13 x 8 inches
  • United – 17 x 10 x 9 inches

As you can see, the dimensions tend to be around 18 x 14 x 8 inches but do vary slightly.

You want a bag that maximizes storage without exceeding space constraints. Oversized bags will need to be checked in, defeating the purpose of under-seat luggage.

Equally important is meeting TSA guidelines – bags over a certain size need screening before boarding. Outsized bags slow down security checks.

That’s why properly measuring your under-seat luggage is crucial for easy airport navigation and hassle-free packing.

Personal Items vs. Under Seat vs. Carry-Ons

When traveling, most airline passengers are typically allowed to bring both a carry-on bag and a personal item on board. The personal item is usually required to fit under the seat in front of you. It provides additional space for items that you may need during your trip or want to keep nearby.

On the other hand, a carry-on bag is generally larger and is stored in the overhead compartment. It provides additional space and must adhere to the airline’s specified size restrictions.

Before boarding, it’s essential to be aware of the specific size and weight restrictions for both the carry-on bag and personal item, as they may vary between airlines. By following these guidelines, travelers can ensure a smooth and efficient boarding process and enjoy a comfortable flight experience.

Personal Items :

  • Small bags like purses and laptop bags, around 16 x 12 x 6 inches.
  • Can be considered an under-seat bag.
  • Need to be stored under the seat or in overhead bins during flight.

mosiso purse

Under Seat Luggage :

  • Slightly larger than personal items, meant to be stowed under the seat.
  • Sometimes considered a personal item.
  • The average dimensions are around 18 x 14 x 8 inches.

under seat luggage with wheels

Carry-On Bags :

  • Larger bags like rollers and duffels are stored in overhead bins.
  • Typical size limits are 21-24 x 13-15 x 9-10 inches.

carry-on luggage

While personal items offer easy access to absolute essentials, they lack sufficient storage. Carry-ons provide ample space but are cumbersome in-flight.

Under-seat bags strike the perfect balance of size and storage for short trips. They also pair well with a personal item and a carry-on for longer journeys.

The first step to choosing the perfect under-seat bag is measuring correctly:

  • Use a soft measuring tape for accuracy
  • Measure at the bag’s widest points
  • Round UP to the nearest inch
  • Check all sides (height, width, length)

This gives you the true maximum dimensions and accounts for any bulges when packed.

soft measuring tape

When shopping, look for bags with the following popular under-seat sizes:

  • 17 x 13 x 7 inches – Very compact but limited storage
  • 18 x 14 x 8 inches – Meets most airline requirements
  • 18 x 14 x 9 inches – Extra depth for more packing
  • 18 x 15 x 8 inches – Wider than typical under-seat bags

Bags sized 18 x 14 x 8 or 9 inches offer the best bet for fitting under most airline seats.

tote under seat luggage

Consider your needs when picking dimensions:

  • Short flights – Compact 17 x 13 x 7 inch bag
  • Long-haul – Deeper 18 x 14 x 9 inches for extras
  • Group travel – Wider 18 x 15 x 8 inches bag

Make sure to check the under-seat luggage dimensions for any airlines you’re traveling with.

Some major airline size dimension restrictions include:

Tips for adhering to airline under-seat luggage rules:

  • Check airline website for size charts
  • Call airline if dimensions are unclear
  • Measure bag and compare to rules
  • Avoid overstuffing if close to limits
  • Be ready to check-in if unsure of compliance

It can be tricky when flying with multiple airlines to keep up with varying luggage regulations. Do your homework before packing so you can adjust your under-seat bag if needed.

What are the standard dimensions for underseat luggage?

How many bags can you bring on a plane?

Most airlines allow 1 underseat bag, plus 1 personal item like a purse or laptop bag. You can also bring 1 carry-on bag to store in the overhead bin. Check your airline’s specific baggage allowances.

Can I use a backpack as an underseat personal item?

Yes, backpacks make excellent underseat personal items if they meet the size requirements. Just be sure no straps are sticking out into the legroom area.

What if my bag doesn’t fit under the seat?

If your underseat bag ends up being too large, you will need to place it in an overhead bin. Try to board early to secure overhead space. Removing bulky items may also help contents fit underseat.

What essentials should I keep in my underseat bag vs. overhead?

Keep anything you need access to in flight in the underseat bag – electronics, medications, documents, some snacks, etc. Overhead can hold less-needed items like extra clothes.

Perfectly sized under-seat luggage ensures you can make the most of this convenient storage space on flights. Follow the tips in this guide to find an under-seat bag that meets airline regulations and your packing needs.

The right dimensions coupled with smart packing give you optimal in-flight access to your essentials. No more wondering what’s in the overhead bin or waiting impatiently to retrieve items.

  • Breathable mesh sides

What Our Experts Say

It’s no surprise that Graco, a long time leader in the playard space, knocks it out of the park with the ultra-versatile Day2Dream Pack ‘n Play. This playard is a minimalist’s dream; it’s an infant sleep space, a fold-flat travel bassinet , a changing station and a spacious Pack ‘n Play all rolled into one. We especially love the ultra-breathable mesh sides that promote airflow and make it really easy to see your little one. This playard comes with two carry bags (one for the bassinet and one for the playard) and an integrated storage organizer to keep essentials close.

What’s Worth Considering

The Day2Dream is heavy, weighing in at almost 40 pounds. It’s also on the pricier side, but since it takes the place of so many separate items of baby gear, we think it’s actually a pretty great deal.

Guava Family Lotus Travel Crib & Play Yard

  • Folds into backpack
  • Ultra light
  • Zippered side door

You have enough to lug around when you’re traveling with your baby—a heavy playard shouldn’t be on your packing list. This ultra-light playard folds up into a backpack, making it easy to tote around when you’re on the go so you can also hold your little one, a diaper bag and everything else you need. And that’s not the only standout feature. Parents love the zippered side door that allows you to lie down with your baby to nurse or cuddle, and toddlers love that it gives them a bit of independence. (Not too much, though, don’t worry—you can clip the zipper closed so they can’t escape!)

The playard can be converted into a bassinet, but this requires an additional kit . Some parents also find the mattress to be quite thin.

Best Lightweight Playard

Babybjörn Travel Crib & Organic Sheet Bundle - Dark Green - $279.99.

Babybjörn Travel Crib & Organic Sheet Bundle - Dark Green

  • Ultra-light- Easy set up and break down
  • Bundle includes crib + organic sheet
  • Also great for travel

Babybjörn’s travel crib is our all-time favorite lightweight playard. It weighs in at just about 13 pounds, a solid 10 pounds lighter than most competitors, and is compact and easy to carry when it’s broken down. It’s designed to be set up in one motion and break down just as easily. The sides are made entirely of mesh and both the mattress itself and the fabric frame can be tossed right into your washing machine. This bundle includes the travel crib and a fitted sheet made from 100% organic cotton.

This travel crib is expensive. The included travel bag has handles but doesn’t have backpack straps, so you’ll need to carry it over your shoulder.

Best More Affordable Lightweight Playard

Chicco Alfa Lite Lightweight Travel Playard - Dove - $169.99.

Chicco Alfa Lite Lightweight Travel Playard - Dove

  • More affordable lightweight choice
  • Includes zippered carry bag

If a lightweight playard is a priority but you don’t want to spend upwards of $250 (or more), Chicco’s Alfa Lite is an excellent choice. This playard offers many of the same features you’ll find in much more expensive playards and travel cribs: an ultra light weight (13 pounds, to be exact); 360-degree mesh sides, an easy, compact fold and fast setup and zip-off, washable fabrics. There’s even a zip-down side, just like in the Guava Lotus. The Alfa comes with a zippered carry bag and accommodates toddlers up to 30 pounds.

Users rave about this well-priced travel crib, especially when comparing it to other pricier models. The one complaint seems to be the mattress, which is on the thinner side.

Best Budget Playard

Graco Pack 'n Play Portable Playard - Reign

  • Great value
  • More compact fold than most other Pack ‘n Plays

The push-button fold makes it easy to break down and there’s a carry bag included for when you need to take it away from home.

You won’t get too many fancy features with this playard, but we don’t think you need them—this Pack ‘n Play is a real workhorse for the price and more than gets the job done.

If you like the idea of an easy-open, easy-close playard but want to spend a little less, check out the Breeze Go . It doesn’t feature the bassinet or the changing station, but will save you some money.

Best Playard for Older Babies and Toddlers

Newton Baby Travel Crib and Play Yard - Grey - $299.99.

Newton Baby Travel Crib and Play Yard - Grey

  • Larger mattress than most playards
  • No weight limit
  • 100% breathable mattress

Playards are helpful during the baby days, but can be just as useful as your little one grows into toddlerhood—especially if you need a safe place to contain them once they’re mobile. But many toddlers hit the height and weight maximums of some playards long before you feel comfortable letting them roam free. The Newton Baby Travel Crib and Playard solves this dilemma. The mattress is about two times larger than many playards, making it ideal for larger babies and toddlers who may be sized out of a smaller option. The mattress also rests directly on the ground, meaning there’s no weight limit to worry about.

The other huge selling point of this playard is the mattress. It’s not only ultra-comfy; it’s also 100 percent breathable and washable, made with the same Wovenaire technology used in the brand’s much-loved crib mattress . And it’s GREENGUARD Gold Certified.

This playard weighs in at about 17 pounds. If you’re using it at home, it’s not a huge deal, but if you’re planning to travel with it frequently, it’s something to keep in mind and you may want to consider a lighter option instead. It’s also on the expensive side, especially if you add on the bassinet insert .

Best All-in-One Playard

UPPAbaby REMI Travel Crib & Playard - Jake - $299.99.

UPPAbaby REMI Travel Crib & Playard - Jake

  • Quick, one-hand fold
  • Greenguard Gold Certified
  • Lots of accessories

UPPAbaby, makers of some of our favorite strollers of all time, has branched out into the playard space with the release of the Remi—and it doesn’t disappoint. All-in-one functionality meets beautiful design in this playard and travel crib combo that goes the distance. There are thoughtful features throughout like breathable sides, a zip-down side panel and a quick, one-handed fold. The Remi is Greenguard Gold Certified and comes with a removable bassinet insert and a travel bag. There are also tons of accessories like an organizer , organic mattress cover and waterproof mattress cover .

The Remi is expensive. It’s also heavy, weighing in at 20 pounds, so keep that in mind if you plan to use it for travel.

Best Playard for Outdoors

Safety 1st Instapop Dome Play Yard - High Street - $119.99.

Safety 1st Instapop Dome Play Yard - High Street

  • Sets up in seconds
  • Great for outdoor use, beach, camping etc.
  • Weighs just 7 lbs

Getting outside with your little one is fun, but it’s also a bit nerve-wracking if they’re a little too free to roam. Taking along a playard can help. While you can certainly use this playard indoors (rainy day fort party, anyone?), it really shines for outdoor and on-the-go use. The setup is incredibly easy and incredibly fast: simply pull it up, pop it into place and you’re set. It weighs under eight pounds so it’s easy to carry and stow in the included travel bag. There are breathable mesh sides, waterproof fabrics and a top cover for sun protection that also features a peekaboo window, and the playard comes with stakes and sand bags if you need to secure it on a windy day. And there’s a zip-down side panel for easy access to your little one.

Unlike traditional playards with mattress-like bottoms, this one doesn’t offer any padding, making it more of a play space rather than a sleep space.

Best Playard for Small Spaces

Bugaboo stardust playard - black (2023).

  • Lightweight and compact to store
  • One second to unfold, three seconds to fold
  • Includes bassinet insert

Leave it to luxe stroller brand Bugaboo to come up with a playard that’s just as stylish as it is functional. The Stardust is sleek, simple and seamless. It opens and closes in seconds and is great for use both at home or for travel thanks to its light weight. Unlike most playards, it folds in on itself like an accordion rather than downward, which means you can store it upright just about anywhere and pop it open whenever you need a spot for your little one to play or chill.

It’s pricey, and there aren’t a ton of add-ons other than the bassinet. There are no wheels on the base legs, but since this playard is pretty light we don’t think that’s too big of a deal.

Best Playard for Multiples

Joovy room2 portable playard - black.

  • 50% more space than traditional playards
  • Great for multiples
  • Large footprint

RSVPing for two (or more)? The Room2 is the “big daddy” of playards with nearly 50 percent more space, totaling ten square feet of place space. It’s a good choice for multiples or if you’re simply looking for a playard with a little more room. There are edge-to-edge mesh windows for maximum visibility and a simple, modern design that parents love. A fitted cotton sheet is included.

You won’t get compact here. It’s also on the heavier side, but considering its size, being just short of 30 pounds isn’t so bad. Some parents also note it’s a bit tricky to set up and take down so it may be a better choice if you’re looking for more of a permanent play or sleep space.

Honorable Mention

  • Maxi-Cosi’s Swift Playard is stylish and functional. This oversized playard can be used as a bassinet, a toddler sleep space and a playard, and it sets up and breaks down in seconds.
  • The Baby Trend Retreat Nursery Center is a Babylist parent favorite and a well-priced playard packed with features. It includes a bassinet that converts into a standalone rocker, hanging toys, sounds and vibration, a larger removable bassinet and of course a roomy play space.
  • Know for their beloved one-handed fold line of strollers, Baby Jogger’s City Suite Multi-Level Playard delivers both looks and functionality. This multi-level playard is lightweight (a little over 13 pounds), includes a bassinet and folds compactly so it works for either at home or on the go.
  • The Fisher-Price On-the-Go Baby Dome is a great affordable option for an outdoor or on-the-go playard, but it works just as well for indoors too. It includes a canopy and a few hanging toys.
  • We analyzed results from Babylist’s Best Baby Products survey, which polled 6,000 Babylist users and asked them to share the baby products they love the most and why.

Do You Need a Playard?

Playards aren’t the only way to create a safe play zone for your baby or toddler. Playmats , jumpers , activity centers and baby gates are great for keeping little ones contained for a short time.

However, playards have a few distinct advantages, and many parents choose to add one to their registries. Playards provide babies with a safe space where they can move around. Many are easy to move from room to room and are useful for travel. They can also do double duty as:

  • Changing stations
  • Portable cribs

Most playards can be used from the newborn stage up until about three years old. Always check the height and weight requirements of your particular playard, as they vary by manufacturer. (Playards where the mattress is elevated off the ground usually have weight maximums of around 30-35 pounds, for example, while playards where the mattress rests on the ground often have no weight maxes.)

Note: If you get a hand-me-down or purchase a used playard, be sure it folds and unfolds properly and the mattress is snug. Check for holes or tears on the sides. And make sure it was manufactured in 2013 or after as that’s when new federal safety standards were enacted.

When you’re shopping or registering for a playard, the most important thing to think through is how you’ll primarily be using it (at home, for travel, etc.). But there are other features you should consider, too.

  • Use. Is travel the primary reason you’re interested in a playard? You’ll want to prioritize a travel-friendly option with features like a compact fold, a carry bag or backpack and a light weight. Are you planning to mostly use a playard in your home? Then those features may be less important, but details that should rise to the top of your list may be things like a built-in bassinet or changing station. Thinking through how you’re going to use a playard can help you narrow down your options.
  • Size and weight. No playard would be considered light, but some models weigh much less than others. Think through how often you’ll be moving your playard around and if you need it for travel. Also pay attention to the height and weight maximums, as that will help inform how long you’ll be able to use your playard.
  • Ease of use and extra features. Research how easy the playard is to fold and unfold and whether or not it has wheels for easier portability. Also think through features like if there’s a bassinet attachment or a changer, if a fitted sheet is included and how easy the playard and mattress are to clean.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

travel itinerary for one week in Moscow

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

I know very little about Moscow or Russia for the\at matter. I do know I would have to see the Red Square and all of its exquisite architectural masterpieces. Also the CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR. Thanks for shedding some light on visiting Moscow.

Thanks for swinging by! The Red Square is a great starting point, but there way too many places and things to discover aside from it!

4 Reasons to Offer a Travel Baby Play Yard for Your Hotel Guests

October 16, 2023

travel yard

Traveling with infants or toddlers can be both exciting and challenging, and finding suitable accommodations that cater to the needs of the little ones is crucial. Hotels that embrace family-friendly amenities attract a broader customer base, including families with young children, which leads to a more diverse clientele and increased bookings.

When hoteliers are planning for family travelers there are a couple staple amenities that come to mind – cribs and highchairs. However, there is another offering that could be critical in building brand loyalty with families – travel yards. Family trips often involve an abundance of luggage, but hotels that provide baby travel yards can make traveling a breeze. By offering baby travel yards, hotels help families minimize packing and eliminate the need to bring their own play yards, providing much-needed space for other essentials.

Providing travel yards results in a variety of benefits that keep your customers happy and safe.

  • Dedicated Play Space: Not only is it important to offer a safe sleeping environment for young travelers, but they also need a s ecure space during downtime. Play yards offer a dedicated area for children to play without getting into anything that may be around the room , provid ing parents with peace of mind during their entire stay.
  • Familiar Sleeping Environment: Children thrive on routine, and providing a familiar sleeping environment, even while traveling, promotes better sleep quality for the little ones during their st ay.
  • Enhanced Guest Experience: Hotels that prioritize family-friendly amenities, like baby travel yards, contribute to an overall enhanced guest experience. Happy children make for happy parents, leading to positive reviews and increased guest satisfaction.
  • Competitive Edge: In a competitive hospitality industry, offering baby play yards sets a hotel apart from its competitors. Family travelers appreciate accommodations that cater to their specific needs, making this amenity a strong selling point.

There are a few specific features to keep in mind when choosing the best play yards for your establishment.

travel yard

  • Ease of Cleaning: Finding travel yards that are easy to clean is crucial for your staff, while travel yards that are visibly clean is cr itica l for your travelers. The SnugFresh System by Foundations is compatible with the SnugFresh Elite and Celebrity and is specifically designed to do both . Cleaning will be easy for your staff thanks to the ultra-soft, wrinkle resistant SnugFresh C overs that are engineered to with stand the repeated washings of your pre-existing linen protocol . SnugFresh R ibbons can be added to the travel yard to remind parents that their baby’s safety and comfort is your top priority .
  • Safety Standards: Safety is always top priority when providing any amenity for both children and adults. When choosing a travel yard, it is critical to find ones that meet or exceed all CPSC and ASTM standards.
  • Diversified Uses: Select travel yards, like the Sleep ‘n Store , are available with an optional bassinet to accommodate young er infants. By providing play yards that can be used for both infants and toddlers, you are opening the possibility of bookings by a larger group of family travelers.
  • Storage Solutions : Play yards can often fold to a very condensed size, making it easy to find storage space. A small footprint is not the only factor however , you need to ensure that your selected travel yard has an included carry bag for convenient storage and transport. Finding a travel yard that has replacement storage bags is an added bonus , as these bags can get worn out after continued use.

Providing a range of family-friendly amenities such as wood and steel cribs, highchairs , and travel yards will help you compete for bookings by family travelers. Satisfied families are more likely to return to a hotel that provided a seamless and comfortable stay for their children and will often share their positive experiences with others. Word-of-mouth recommendations, both in person and online, can significantly boost a hotel's reputation, attracting more families seeking family-friendly accommodations.

How to make a front yard more inviting – 6 real life examples from landscape designers

If you've worked hard on improving your backyard, your eye may now be fixed on how to make a front yard more inviting.

And it's not just about getting a perfect lawn. In urban and suburban areas, homeowners are redesigning their front plots to create privacy with low walls or native plants; as sunny spots to grow herbs, flowers and vegetables; and to gain extra living space by building patios or decks.

Originally, the curb-appeal concept entailed painting your house, making repairs, and landscaping your front yard to attract possible homebuyers and to hopefully make your neighbors happy.

Now, a truly inviting front yard should not only reflect the architectural design of a house, it should also be a reflection of those who live inside.

We have profiled the work of six landscape designers to showcase their real life projects and demonstrate how front yards have evolved beyond cookie-cutter turfed lawns, to well-planned, stylish layouts.

Creating a useable and inviting space in your front yard

If you think it’s time to rethink your front yard, the possibilities are vast. Reconfiguring your space to grow fresh food, promote wildlife, or for a better environment are great reasons to renovate your front yard. Or perhaps you just want to turn that dull space into a low maintenance front yard and boost its curb appeal.

1. Go green to create a lush entry

As one of the oldest neighborhoods in Houston, Texas, the Heights boasts a charming mix of Victorians, bungalows, and brick cottages. The owners of a cottage tasked David Morello Garden Enterprises (DMGE) with a remodel that would make them feel more 'at home'.

In just three months, DMGE transformed the outdoor spaces, making the inviting front yard walkway lush and green with plants that soften the entrance.

The team found it a challenge to design a year-round garden with low-maintenance front-yard plants that would be able to withstand Houston’s summers, which are hot, humid, and can be oppressive.

Meeting the requirements were redbud trees like the Cercis occidentalis var. texensis ; Japanese yew ( Taxus cuspidata ); Japanese boxwood hedges ( Buxus microphylla ); Sunshine ligustrum ( Ligustrum sinense 'Sunshine’) with year-round golden foliage; and cardamom-leaf ginger ( Alpinia nutans ). The vivid green lawn is St. Augustine ( Stenotaphrum secundatum ).

Other Houston-tolerant choices include wood ferns and foxtail ferns, lilyturf ( Liriope muscari ), irises, and dwarf yaupon holly ( Ilex vomitoria 'Nana’). Three terracotta pots changed-out with annuals provide seasonal color.

Working with a budget, DMGE used fieldstone set in mortar for the front landing, while blackstar gravel (basalt) was used on the concrete driveway and service areas. Planting beds are delineated with brown steel garden edging, which help to contain the soil, mulching, and plants.

2. Add striking containers to a front porch garden

Gravel garden ideas can be a smart choice if you prefer the idea of a low maintenance front yard. The landscaping of this house in Tacoma, Washington, designed by Gardendigs, includes rainbow rock with inset rectangular concrete pavers.

Architectural tall black planters provide a nice contrast to the white porch and are filled with shade-loving Mahonia ( Mahonia 'Soft Caress') and the evergreen Japanese aralia ( Fatsia japonica ) try Jiarui - Green Fatsia Japonica at Walmart.

Broad-leafed plants like the aralia paired with architectural planters help to increase their visual impact from the curb or street. Anything smaller or more delicate would get lost.

It's important to pay attention to the location of your container gardening ideas and work out whether they are more suited to shade, sun, or a combination of both. For curb appeal, use the same or similar planters to avoid a mismatched look. Continuity is also a good rule for the plants that go in the containers.

3. Plant between pavers

This Los Angeles front garden is bursting with colorful succulents and flowers, with pockets of planting added throughout the space to soften the effect of the hardscaping.

A welcoming pathway leading from the street to the front door is made of flagstone with tough ground cover plants, in this case silver carpet ( Dymondia margaretae ), between the pavers to soften the look.

Bosler Earth Design planted with future growth in mind. 'I always design for 80 per cent of the plant’s full growth and space accordingly,' says Catherine Bosler.

Her main goal was to turn a thirsty green lawn into a colorful cohesive landscape that would save on water usage. The palette consists of mauve, yellow, greens, burgundy, and hints of orange and blue.

Primarily a mix of Australian and South African plants (which grow well in Southern California), the garden includes purple fernleaf acacia ( Acacia baileyana ‘Purpurea’), pincushions ( Leucospermum ), kangaroo paws, euphorbias, and blue fescue. A clever mix of succulents finishes the overall scheme to great effect.

4. Add a front deck

The backyard of this one-story ranch-style house located in California’s Central Valley lacked any workable outdoor living spaces, so the homeowners asked the Sacramento-based firm of Luciole Design to incorporate some deck ideas on the front porch instead.

With a fresh start and amended clay soil, Luciole used a mix of gray fescue; shrubby, dark green germander ( Teucrium chamaedrys ); strappy New Zealand flax ( Phormium tenax ); and two kinds of flax lilies: Dianella tasmanica 'Variegata' and D. revoluta ‘Coolvista’. Underneath is soft brown bark mulch. A patch of turf was planted for the kids to play on.

Concrete paths were poured to flow logically from the street and driveway to the front door, while leaving room for outdoor seating on the front deck. A wood bench and horizontal-slat fences at various heights create privacy for the deck along with consistency in hardscape materials.

5. Create a tropical oasis

After an island vacation, everyone wants to recreate that feeling of paradise in their own yards with some eye-catching tropical garden ideas. Unfortunately, most of those exotic plants will only grow indoors, if you’re lucky. That is, unless you live in South Florida, which is home to a tropical climate.

For the front yard landscaping ideas in this Miami plot, landscape architect Matthew Giampietro designed pathways lined with colorful tropicals that lead to a private front patio. Horizontal wood-slat fencing and gates provide some necessary front yard privacy.

In addition to assorted palms, which thrive in this environment, Giampietro carefully considered the landscaping around trees, opting for a stunning mix of colorful bromeliads, ornamental grasses, birds of paradise ( Stretlitzia ), crotons ( Codiaeum variegatum ), Chinese fan palms ( Livistona chinensis ), philodendrons, and variegated or shell ginger ( Alpinia zerumbet ), among many others.

The paved patio features modern outdoor chairs surrounded by beds filled with smooth river rocks, small flowering trees, fragrant flowers, and palms, for a secluded tropical home-based getaway.

6. Incorporate a space for socializing

Where space allows, a large front yard can offer the opportunity to create additional entertaining zones. The homeowners of this home in Arcadia, Arizona, hired Lavender Landscape Design Co. of Tempe to design a patio where they could socialize with neighbors.

Many aspects of the original yard remain, including the lawn and some of the brick paving, which became a front garden wall for newly installed silver travertine front yard paving idea. The patio is open but enclosed by a low iron fence and an entry gate.

Outdoor heating in the form of a rectangular brick veneer fire pit take center stage in the new layout, while the existing stone veneer on the home’s exterior was replaced with brick veneer to unify the look. Whilst front yard lighting creates ambience after dark.

A clean and modern planting palette includes waxleaf privet ( Ligustrum japonicum ), dwarf yaupon holly, winter gem boxwood ( Buxus sinica ), Texas mountain laurel ( Sophora secundiflora ), fruitless olive trees ( Oleo europaea ), and several varieties of roses, including Lady Banks, white iceberg, and burgundy iceberg.

What plants look good in the front yard?

Start with foundation plants that are evergreens or at least standing throughout most of the seasons. These might be one of two trees, or passing by in a car or on foot. There are no sure-bet plants that will give you a dazzling yard. However, there are some things to consider when you go plant shopping:

  • Go with natives, which means plants that are indigenous to your region and grow naturally in uninhabited areas. Check with your local university or a gardening club or society for suggestions.
  • Start with foundation plants that are evergreens or at least standing throughout most of the seasons. These might be one or two trees for front yardstrees for front yards, shrubs, or ornamental grasses. Usually, they are planted near the house, walls, fences, paths, or hardscape.
  • Foundation plants enhance and sometimes repeat your home’s architectural style. For example, unfussy plants with simple lines and a sculptural quality – like some succulents or sub-tropicals – complement a modern or mid-century modern home, while roses and delicate flowering perennials would look out of place.
  • Set a goal to have something in bloom throughout the year for season. This might take some research but is worth the time and effort.
  • A lush look can be beautiful, but try breaking up the landscape by incorporating hardscape features, such as an entry path from the street or the door, a small patio, stones and boulders, wood fencing, or stone garden walls.
  • Repeat plants for continuity rather than using your front yard as a test site for a vast mix of seedlings and non-natives. Also strive for continuity in form, texture, and color.
  • Even devout gardeners get busy, so look for low maintenance ornamental grasses, succulents, shrubs, and perennials. You can save the dirty work for the backyard.

If you are lucky enough to start building a new front yard with a clean slate, consider hiring a garden designer or landscape architect to create a plan.

NEW YORK (AP) — The Vessel, a climbable sculpture that drew hordes of tourists to the Hudson Yards megadevelopment on Manhattan’s west side before a string of suicides forced its closure in 2021, will reopen to the public later this year with added safety measures.

The towering honeycomb-like attraction will feature new steel mesh barriers on several of its twisting stairways and platforms, according to a spokesperson for Related Companies, which owns Hudson Yards. The top level of the 150-foot (46-meter) structure will remain off limits.

The spokesperson did not confirm an exact date for the reopening but said the developer looked forward to welcoming visitors back later this year.

Designed by Thomas Heatherwick and fabricated in Venice, the Vessel opened in 2019 as the centerpiece of the glittering new Hudson Yards neighborhood , quickly becoming one of the city’s prime tourist destinations. But after three people took their own lives by jumping off the structure in less than a year, it was closed to the public in early 2021.

The Vessel reopened soon after with new safety features like enhanced security, suicide prevention signs and a ban on hiking up the steps alone — but without the barriers requested by some Manhattan officials and the local community board. Just two months later, it was closed once again, after a 14-year-old visiting the city with his family fatally leapt from the edge.

The structure has remained locked to the public ever since as developers have investigated the feasibility of additional protections, such as netting.

A spokesperson for Related said the new steel mesh would be cut-resistant and able to withstand the outdoor elements without compromising the Vessel’s form or views.

Jessica Chait, the chair of the Manhattan community board, praised the upgrades but said they should have happened sooner.

“While we think it took Related four lives too many to make these physical adjustments, these are the changes we requested, which will allow for prioritizing the safety of everyone who visits the Vessel,” she said.
