Lomopedia: Olympus Trip AF 50/51

A simple point-and-shoot camera from the 2000s, the Olympus Trip AF 50 follows the “Trip” tradition of providing travelers with a fuss-free shooting experience for documenting their adventures. Find out more about this modern Olympus Trip camera in this installment of Lomopedia!

trip af 50

One of the last few models in the long-running Trip Series of autofocus point-and-shoot cameras by Olympus, the Trip AF 50 was introduced in the 2000s as a more modern offering for holiday snapshooters who wanted "auto-focus everything" for fuss-free travel photography. Its 28 mm wide-angle lens made this model a fun and reliable travel companion for beautiful landscape, group, and party photos. That's definitely the case as we see in many of the photos taken by our fellow Lomographers with it so far! A self-timer was eventually added to the camera and was subsequently named Trip AF 51 .

Olympus Trip AF 50

  • Brand: Olympus
  • Name: Olympus Trip AF 50
  • Type: Snapshot camera
  • Type of Film: 35mm
  • Focal length: 28 mm
  • Maximum aperture: f/6.7
  • Focus: Autofocus
  • Shutter speeds: 1/100 s
  • Flash / Flash connection: Built-in flash
  • Release date: 2002
  • Age: Up to 22 years

The Olympus Trip AF 50, a snapshot camera from Olympus in 35 mm format, offers uncomplicated handling. Similar variants such as the Olympus Trip 600 and Olympus Trip 500 complete the range. Production took place in a Chinese factory.

The fixed lens with 28 mm focal length and maximum aperture of f/6.7 is ideal for snapshots, landscape and group shots. The focus does not allow manual distance adjustment, and a minimum distance of 100 cm to the subject is required for sharp images. Macro shots cannot be realised optimally.

Exposure settings are controlled by the built-in light meter for films with ISO 100 to ISO 400. The automatic exposure function does not allow manual selection of exposure time and aperture, with the shutter speed set to 1/100 second.

The built-in flash is useful in low light conditions with a range of up to 1.9 metres. A tripod thread facilitates group shots, while a self-timer is missing. The camera requires two AA batteries ( eBay / Amazon * ), although rechargeable batteries are a sustainable option.

Films for the Olympus Trip AF 50

What types of film are suitable for the Olympus Trip AF 50? Despite the digital photography boom, the camera shows a nostalgic affection for analogue film and uses 35 mm film.

For colour shots, Kodak Ultramax 400 * is recommended. Black and white shots are possible with the Ilford XP2 Super * . Both films show solid performance according to various test reports.

The C-41 development process is suitable for processing colour films and is offered by most photo labs. In Germany it is possible to have colour films developed in large drugstore chains.

The Olympus Trip AF 50 has an exposure area of 24 mm x 36 mm and the film transport is automatic. A counter on the top shows the number of photos taken, while a window on the back shows the film loaded.

Olympus Trip AF 50 Quartz Date

In addition to the normal model, there was also a Quartz Date version. This version of the Trip AF 50 offered the option of imprinting the recording time and date on the images. This function was very popular as it made it easy to reconstruct the dates of the photos taken. The disadvantage is, of course, the visual impression that a date gives in the pictures. Thanks to Exif data, this no longer plays a major role in digital photography.

It was launched with 3 other models a similar but higher specified Trip AF 51 and 2 fixed focus cameras (Trip 500 & Trip 505) which were all intended for emerging markets in the developing world. It is part of the Trip AF series introduced in 1984.

The camera features a 28mm f/5.6 auto focus glass lens with a focus range of 0.8m to infinity. The camera is protected with a lens barrier that also acts as the power switch when uncovering the lens. The film counter is additive and automatically resets when reloading film. It uses DX coded film of 100, 200 and 400 ISO with non coded films set at 100 ISO. Film is automatically motor advanced to the first frame, and stops at the last. The rewind switch is on the bottom base of the camera next to the tripod mount. Power is with two AA batteries which last approx 20 rolls of film. The Trip 50 QD model can imprint in multiple formats including day-month-year, day-hour-minute, month-day-year, year-month-day and off.

Olympus Trip 51AF

Flash-drastic – The Olympus Trip AF51 Review

Sunny day with a wide 21 st century AF camera,  some subtle street shooting might be on the cards ? Not if you’re using the Olympus Trip AF51. This has the lowest trigger for its autoflash I’ve ever seen. Shame as there’s some other things that make this quite likeable.

If you’re thinking you’ve seen this camera before on this site, you’d not be far off. The AF51 was released as a quartet of cheap, wide angled compacts bearing the Trip moniker in 2002 . I’ve already reviewed the lomo-esque fixed-focus Trip 500 , the entry-level of the four. This on paper is much improved and we’re not just talking the AF.

Tired Seeker

Specs-savers ?

It boast a glass 3 element 28mm 1:6.3 lens  and  a programmed shutter of 1/40-1/140. Like the 500 it auto sets film speed using DX coding but with just 2 pins that essentially means just 2 settings (100/200 ISO and 400 ISO). It rewinds itself although it still has the switch on the base to allow you to rewind mid roll. It also has a timer button.  A data back version exists and there is the more simpler AF50 which has the same lens as the AF51 but the same mechanics as the 500.

Flash – Arg Ha !!!

Poetic cut

But it’s the flash that annoyed me. I suspect my camera was a bit duff although it came in immaculate condition and on review has performed well enough in terms of exposure. I’m use to cheap autoflash cameras kicking the flash when things get overcast even with 400 ISO, but here the flash kicked in with anything but full sunlight.  My 500 was never as bad as this.  This made worse as  like the 500, there is no way to turn the flash on or off.

The flash is slightly more powerful than the 500. However not by much with a range of just 0.8-2.3m with 100/200 ISO films (doubles up to 4.6m with 400ISO).  It has at least 2 saving graces. Firstly a red-eye mode triggered by half depressing the shutter button. And secondly, the whole camera including flash is powered by two cheap AA . Olympus suggest with 50% (oh I’d love for that level) of flash usage you can get through about 20 rolls of 24exp film on one set but I reckon that’s quite ambitious.

Shape appeal

Body-wise this is the same chassis as the 500. It is compact and nicely styled for what it is. Like the 500 there are few controls really just the shutter button, self timer and lens cover switch. A tripod mount makes more sense here with the timer. It also has a quiet motor driver. In use you’re mean to wait until the flash ready button lights up before using (the camera will precharge whether needed or not)

That the only indicator light – there’s no real feedback you’ve focused okay or that the flash will fire.

20 to the sky

Performance

Much as I’ve griped about the flash the 2 rolls I shot with this were actually reasonably exposed for a basic camera and all 76 shots I got scanned back from the lab were okay exposure wise. Actually the flash acted quite well as fill in giving rise to a few shots that were better than they should have been. The relatively slow shutter range means this isn’t the greatest for action shots.

The lens is much better than the plastic lens of the 500.  When AF was on the mark sharpness was pretty consistent across the frame only mildly softening at the edges. It as wide and has the same Lomo vignetting tendency as the 500.  There’s also a mild case of barrel distortion but not all that bad. This is not gonna challenge the  mju-1 or 2, Olympus’s flagship compacts but actually not that bad when focus is on.

The AF is okay a median distances 1.5-5m a bit soft but I’ve seen worse. I found it not so good closer  to the alleged 0.8m close point. Beyond 5m things increasingly are less consistent and like many a AF compact this worsens as you head to the horizon.

CAFE

As you can guess the flash irritated me although oddly it has its pluses. This rules the camera out as anything to consider seriously and if you want a street AF compact look away to the likes of the mju-1 or 2 or the better models in the Pentax Espio series. It can’t do distances that well. It has pretty limited shutter range and few features

But it is compact, quiet and stylish (for what it is) with a wide lens. Load with 400 ISO and it makes a reasonable night out shooter that does okay with some quirks that unlike your Contax T3 you don’t have to worry about someone spilling their pint on or leaving on the bus home. It’ll do alright at median distances but there’s much better out there if you either pay more than the £1-10 the AF51 sells at or are bulkier ( ricoh FF-9s et al). Like the 500, it does have the Lomo style vignetting that might suit some combined with that pretty wide lens.

I had a Trip 500 for a while; it shared this camera’s body. But it obviously had a much lesser lens, given the reasonably good results this AF51 returned compared to the terrible ones that 500 returned.

What really gets interesting Jim is the Trip 505, basically the AF51 without AF. This whole series seems pretty lomo-esque but I’m wondering if fixed focus with glass lens and the better exposure will be the best of the bunch ?

Just to see I like your blog. Given you seem to have a sense of humour and liking for 80s/90s Olympus cameras, I have an Olympus AZ 300 you can have for the cost of postage. Not sure if it works and it smells of cigarettes but just say the word. Email to let me know.

I forgot to say that I’ll take the risk- if it don’t work then no charge!

Thanks for the offer Martin but I’ll pass for the mo as I’ve already got a iS series camera. The AZ 300 is actually well regarded and you may well get enough to make it worth selling on eBay. My other half is grumbling about the camera numbers at the mo !
