GENEVA (AP) — Unseeded Nicolás Jarry raced past Grigor Dimitrov to win the Geneva Open final 7-6 (1), 6-1 on Saturday and is poised to rise to his best ranking in a career that was stalled by a doping case.

The former No. 3-ranked Dimitrov was seeking his first title since the 2017 ATP Tour Finals, which lifted him to that career-best ranking.

Instead, the 54th-ranked Jarry eased to his second title this season, converting his first match point when Dimitrov could not return a powerful serve to his backhand.

Jarry celebrated by crossing the court to where his family was watching and passed his racket up to his infant son.

In Jarry’s standout week in Geneva, he beat current or former top-10 players on three straight days — two-time defending champion Casper Ruud, Alexander Zverev and Dimitrov.

It was the 27-year-old Chilean’s third career title, all of them coming at clay-court events in the lowest 250-level.

Jarry is now set to rise above the career-high No. 38-ranking he reached in 2019 before a failed doping test interrupted his career.

He completed serving an 11-month ban in 2020 that was imposed after he tested positive for two banned substances, including an anabolic steroid, at the Davis Cup finals. The International Tennis Federation accepted that Jarry was not at significant fault for ingesting a tainted vitamin supplement made in Brazil.

Meirav Eilon Shahr, Ambassador of the Permanent Representative Mission of the Israel to the UN, observes the vote on a resolution regarding the Israeli military campaign in Gaza, during the 55th session of the Human Rights Council, at the European headquarters of the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, Friday, April 5, 2024. The U.N.’s top human rights body called on countries to stop selling or shipping weapons to Israel in a resolution passed Friday that aims to help prevent rights violations against Palestinians amid Israel’s blistering military campaign in Gaza. The 47-member-country Human Rights Council voted 28-6 in favor of the resolution, with 13 abstentions. (Salvatore Di Nolfi/Keystone via AP)

“It’s been a great year after a very tough couple of years. I’m very happy for that,” Jarry said in a courtside interview. He returned to the top 100 only in February.

Dimitrov was playing in his first final since February 2018 when he lost to Roger Federer at Rotterdam.

“It’s been a while since I’ve done one of those,” the 33rd-ranked Dimitrov said when collecting his runner-up trophy. “It’s been a bumpy road but I’m very grateful to be back here and to be part of the final.”

Jarry earned an early 2-1 lead Saturday with a backhand passing winner down the line to convert the only break point he had in the first set.

Dimitrov broke back in the eighth game when Jarry double-faulted.

Jarry dominated the tiebreaker and clinched the set when he charged the net and pressed Dimitrov into netting a backhand half-volley.

Dimitrov dropped his first two service games in the second set, first when he forced a forehand wide then when he put a low, backhand sliced volley into the net.

The Geneva Open is the last warmup event on clay before the French Open starts Sunday.

At Roland Garros, Jarry will face 160th-ranked Hugo Dellien of Bolivia in the first round. The winner could then face 16th-seeded American Tommy Paul.

Dimitrov is seeded No. 28 in Paris and will first play 147th-ranked Timofey Skatov of Kazakhstan.

Grigor Dimitrov to face Nicolas Jarry in Geneva Open final

  • Associated Press

GENEVA -- Grigor Dimitrov advanced to his first final on the ATP Tour in more than five years Friday by beating Taylor Fritz 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (2) at the Geneva Open.

Dimitrov trailed by a set and 4-2 before rallying to win a semifinal for the first time since February 2018, when opponent David Goffin retired in their match at Rotterdam.

The Bulgarian player created his match-point chance against Fritz in a stunning rally, with powerful forehands and angled drop shots from both sides of the net. Fritz was left slipping and seated on the clay outside the tramlines to watch Dimitrov hit a winner into the open court.

The win was sealed when the second-seeded Fritz sent a looping lob long as the fourth-seeded Dimitrov advanced to the net.

"It was a crazy match," Dimitrov said. "Honestly, very pleased with the way I fought."

He is ranked No. 33 and arrived in Geneva with a 12-9 record this season.

"I came this week with a purpose and I intend to finish it up to the end," he said. He has only one clay-court title in his eight career tournament wins. His last title was the ATP Tour Finals in 2017.

Dimitrov will play the final on Saturday against unseeded Nicolas Jarry , who beat third-seeded Alexander Zverev 7-6 (3), 6-3 in a rematch of their 2019 final in Geneva.

Jarry sealed the win with a delicate, low backhand volley at the net, one day after ousting top-seeded Casper Ruud , the two-time defending champion.

Zverev and Ruud combined to win the past three editions of the French Open warmup event and neither had lost at the lakeside park venue until running into the tall 54th-ranked Chilean.

Jarry is chasing his second title this year after also winning on clay at his hometown Santiago event in March.

Daniil Medvedev set for ATP Tour return at the Geneva Open

Daniil Medvedev gestures during a match

Daniil Medvedev will return to the ATP Tour as a main draw entrant at the Geneva Open.

Medvedev will face the winner of the first round clash between French journeyman Richard Gasquet and Australia’s John Millman.

Also lurking in the World No 2’s quarter of the draw is Dominic Thiem who continues to improve as he gets more time on the court.

Thiem could pose a serious obstacle for Medvedev who is yet to feature in the clay court swing after picking up an injury of his own.

Medvedev returns to ATP Tour action for the first time since March having endured a layoff due to a hernia procedure.

He can achieve a number of important firsts in Geneva as he hunts a maiden title for 2022 and a first career trophy on clay.

Also enjoying a first round bye are fellow top seeds Casper Ruud, Denis Shapovalov and Reilly Opelka.

Defending champion Ruud enjoyed a run to the semi-finals in Rome after an underwhelming start to his clay swing.

The second-seeded Norwegian will meet either French veteran Benoit Paire or Finnish prospect Emil Ruusuvuori in the Round of 16.

If seeding holds sway in results, Ruud will face seventh-seeded Argentine Federico Delbonis in the quarter-finals.

Ruud shares his half of the draw with two seeded Americans in Opelka and Tommy Paul.

Opelka and Paul could meet in the last eight but the latter will need to get past a tough assignment in Dutch up-and-comer Tallon Griekspoor in the opening round.

With Roger Federer not in action, Swiss hopes will rest either with qualifiers or wildcard Leandro Riedi.

Riedi could meet Paul in the second round in Geneva if he can get past a qualifier.

Meanwhile, Opelka’s opening match will be against either Spain’s Albert Ramos-Vinolas or another qualifier.

Fresh off a huge win over Rafael Nadal, 2021 Geneva Open finalist Shapovalov enjoys a first round bye before facing either Ilya Ivashka or American Marcos Giron in the Round of 16.

Georgian talent Nikoloz Basilashvili is on a quarter-final collision course with Shapovalov but will need to get past a qualifier in the opening round.

Shapovalov could face Medvedev in the Geneva Open semi-final if both men are able to gain the last four.

Atp bucharest final prediction: mariano navone vs marton fucsovics.

  • April 20, 2024
  • Damian Kust

Marton Fucsovics in action ahead of the ATP Bucharest Open.

The Tiriac Open in Bucharest returned to the tour after eight years, and while the rain had some rough moments, it should all come down to a brilliant final on Sunday. Will Mariano Navone claim his maiden title, or can Marton Fucsovics return to the winners’ circle after six years? Who do you think will come out on top?

ATP Bucharest Final Prediction

Mariano navone vs marton fucsovics.

Head-to-head: First meeting

Mariano Navone was dominating clay Challengers in the latter half of last year , and while at first there were some moments of doubt in terms of his ability to translate it to the main tour, the Argentinian is now playing the sort of tennis he was back then. A final in Rio de Janeiro, a semifinal in Marrakech, and the final here are just his last three events. The 23-year-old is such an expert in clay-court rallying, and it’s all based on being a phenomenal ball-striker as well.

Marton Fucsovics hadn’t made a final in three years, but the Hungarian is always there as a part of the tour and hasn’t finished outside the Top 100 since 2017. His run at ATP Bucharest started with a wild 0-6 tie-break comeback against Valentin Vacherot, but he picked it up not long after and defeated some of the title favorites like 2nd seed Tallon Griekspoor or 4th seed Alejandro Tabilo to earn himself a shot at a 2nd ATP Tour title (Geneva 2018).

Navone was a little disappointing in his previous final effort in Rio, but that, in general, felt like a run in which he was a little fortunate. It’s now that he’s feeling like the player who looked unstoppable last year, and while Fucsovics has that experience and plenty of tennis IQ, the peak game of the Argentinian is more dangerous on clay. Whether it’s by pressuring his opponent or by turning points around against his forehand, Navone seems to have the cards in his own hands here a bit more than the Hungarian does.
