VIVA Cruises' 2024 program features 3rd newbuild riverboat Viva Enjoy

CruiseMapper logo

VIVA Cruises/fleet , a specialist in European river cruises , has unveiled its 2024 brochure featuring an impressive selection of 280+ voyages along renowned inland waterways such as the Rhine, Main, Danube, Moselle, Rhone, and Seine. Notably, the launch of their third purpose-built ship - VIVA Enjoy , stands as a major highlight.

VIVA's entire array of 2024 itineraries is now available for online booking.

Building upon the success of VIVA One ship 's introduction in 2022 and the subsequent launch of VIVA Two earlier this year, the company (subsidiary of Scylla AG ) is set to introduce VIVA Enjoy in September 2024. This unveiling adds to the allure of the 2024 catalog, where VIVA ENJOY showcases an aesthetic akin to VIVA's second newbuild riverboat . The Enjoy boasts 4 decks and 95 passenger staterooms (including 8 suites), and 3 onboard dining venues.

Throughout 2024, the Dusseldorf -based company is set to offer a diverse collection of 85 different itineraries, encompassing a remarkable tally of more than 280 voyages across its fleet of 8 boats. These itineraries cater to an array of preferences, spanning from concise four-night urban getaways and festive Christmas and New Year's cruises to the perennially popular themed sailings. Notably, the maiden voyage of VIVA ENJOY is a notable highlight in the upcoming year's offerings.

The 2024 catalog reveals an assortment of captivating land tours and excursions that align with the diverse range of trips available. Andrea Kruse, the Chief Operating Officer of VIVA Cruises, emphasized the introduction of both fresh itineraries and immersive experiences for the year ahead. The highly anticipated debut of VIVA ENJOY further bolsters VIVA Cruises' fleet, which includes three ships that operate year-round, even during the traditionally quieter months of January, February, and March.

In 2024, VIVA maintains its commitment to offering flexibility to its global clientele. Travelers can select from a wide spectrum of voyages and departure ports, each tailored to create distinctive experiences. For instance, VIVA ONE will predominantly traverse the Rhine between Dusseldorf and destinations in the Netherlands and Belgium. On the other hand, VIVA TIARA will offer an array of inner-German journeys starting and concluding in Frankfurt and Koblenz , incorporating sought-after four-night urban escapades.

VIVA TWO, the second vessel in the fleet, will embark on Danube cruises departing from or arriving at Passau and Vienna . Meanwhile, VIVA VOYAGE and VIVA GLORIA will explore a diverse range of itineraries in France. Notably, the 2024 program introduces new 8-day routes from Dusseldorf to Antwerp , offered aboard VIVA MOMENTS .

A prominent highlight of the 2024 agenda is VIVA ENJOY's maiden voyage - a 12-night voyage leaving from Frankfurt on September 22nd. The itinerary visits popular port cities in Germany (Wertheim , Wurzburg , Nuremberg , Passau ) and in Austria - Linz , and Vienna (debarkation). Following her inaugural journey, VIVA ENJOY will continue her explorations with 8-day Danube voyages ("Charming Danube" itinerary roundtrip from Vienna), with subsequent "Advent Magic" (between Nuremberg and Vianna) and Christmas-themed voyages in October and November.

All of VIVA Cruises' meticulously crafted itineraries come complete with the renowned VIVA All-Inclusive package, which encompasses a range of amenities including snacks, full board, premium alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, a well-stocked minibar, luxury beauty products by Rituals, Wi-Fi access, and all gratuities and tips.

5 Ways VIVA Cruises Differs from River Cruising as You Know It

The river cruise ship VIVA Two on the Danube River

Travel Market Report recently returned from a week onboard VIVA Cruises' brand-new vessel VIVA Two, sailing on the Danube River. Joining us onboard were the company's COO Andrea Kruse and vice president of sales and marketing for North America, John Dennis.

If you haven't heard of VIVA Cruises, it's because the German-based cruise line launched in 2018 but due to the pandemic, the introduction to the North American market was delayed until now.

Headquartered in Dusseldorf, Germany, VIVA has a fleet of eight ships: VIVA Moments, VIVA Tiara, VIVA Voyage, VIVA Gloria, Swiss Diamond, Swiss Ruby, VIVA One, and VIVA Two. A new vessel (which will be identical to VIVA Two) will launch in 2024. Its parent company is Scylla AG, a builder of luxury river vessels.

Undeterred by the number of river cruise lines already in the market, VIVA Cruises' executives told TMR its mission is to deliver a distinctive cruise experience coupled with outstanding value.

Here are five ways VIVA Cruises differs from the competition.

1. VIVA Cruises offers an International Cruise Experience Although based in Germany, VIVA markets itself as an international brand. Roughly 50% of its guests are from German-speaking countries (Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, and Luxembourg), and the rest are primarily from the Scandinavian countries, Israel, and a smattering of others. At this point, the line has only had a smattering of North American cruisers, but Kruse and Dennis told us the line aims to grow its North American customer base to 10%.

Guests are mainly couples, age 60+, and retired.

German and English are the official languages spoken onboard. Announcements, lectures, and printed materials are in both languages. Guests are congenial and social, and we observed many European guests speaking English as well as their mother tongue, with German being most prominent.

With a large European clientele, your clients might wonder about the smoking situation onboard VIVA Cruises. Smoking is only permitted in designated outdoor areas. On VIVA Two, these were located at the bow and stern of the ship. All interiors (including staterooms) and all other outdoor areas including the top viewing deck are smoke-free.

So, who are the perfect clients for VIVA Cruises?

We'd recommend advisors target clients who are well-traveled, open to meeting travelers from other parts of the world, and are comfortable cruising with people who speak different languages. VIVA Cruises is not for clients who prefer to be around others just like them.

2. VIVA Cruises Sails Year-Round VIVA Cruises is the only cruise line that operates year-round in Europe. All others generally shut down between January and March. As such, VIVA offers its guests a chance to see the rivers and cities from a different perspective – away from the busy season, large crowds, and heat.

Clients also benefit from lower pricing during the winter months.

3. VIVA Cruises Offers Unique Itineraries VIVA's Winter program offers four-night wellness cruises on the Rhine that include a massage treatment, and wholesome menus featuring low-carb meals, healthy bowls, freshly-squeezed juices, detox waters, and organic teas. Other winter cruises include four-night “City Trips” that sail through Belgium or The Netherlands.

VIVA is currently working on cruise-tour packages that combine short sailings with city stays in places such as Munich, Passau, and Dusseldorf.

In the spring, summer, and fall, VIVA sails on the Rhine, the Rhône, the Main, the Moselle, the Seine, and the Danube. Its itineraries range from three- and four-night "highlight" sailings, as well as standard week-long cruises to longer Danube sailings of up to 15 nights.

VIVA also operates unique seven- and nine-night sailings along Germany's Baltic Coast, which is a rare offer. Sailing roundtrip from Stralsund in north-eastern Germany, the cruise visits quaint coastal villages and into Poland via the Szczecin Lagoon. It's a great option for clients with German and Polish heritage or those who have done a lot of European river cruising and want to try a different destination.

4. VIVA Cruises Offers Outstanding Value For the North American market, VIVA Cruises operates on an all-inclusive basis. VIVA's fares include all meals, all-day beverages (including a stocked mini-bar), Wi-Fi, crew gratuities, and one excursion at every port.

Breakfasts and lunches are served buffet-style, accompanied by cooked-to-order eggs at breakfast and a selection of hot entrees at lunch. Dinner is table service. Restaurants operate open-seating style, meaning guests can dine any time during the posted hours and sit wherever they like.

A secondary restaurant – VIVA's Bistro – specializes in seafood and offers table-service lunch and dinner.

Debuting on VIVA Two is the Moments restaurant, which is open for breakfast and lunch, and serves a special five-course wine-pairing dinner. Other than reservations being required for dinner at VIVA's Bistro and Moments, there is no extra charge to dine in either restaurant. VIVA's menus feature local specialties as well as international cuisine, and every meal we sampled was beautifully prepared and delicious.

The beverage menu is quite extensive, but there is one difference wine-loving clients will want to know about. Local wines are only featured on occasion or by request. The house wine on our sailing was from South Africa, but if you wanted something different, the staff was happy to fetch it.

Standard in river cruising, the excursion included at every port is a port-highlight walking tour. Special interest excursions are available for purchase. All excursions operate in English and German, with separate buses and guides for each language.

5. VIVA Cruises is Green VIVA Two has received the gold certificate from the Green Award Foundation, given only to vessels with the highest environmental standards. Sustainable practices onboard VIVA's fleet include using virtually sulfur-free fuel that reduces emissions, and using shore power where available. Guests receive reusable water bottles, which can be filled with sparking or still mineral water at centrally-located dispensers. There are also 76 solar panels built into the top deck on VIVA Two to help offset some of the ship's energy usage.

How to Present VIVA Cruises to your clients With the plethora of river cruise lines in the market, it is important to differentiate between the brands and present the right one to your clients. Here are VIVA Cruises' top-selling features:

  • VIVA's all-inclusive pricing offers one of the best values in the marketplace. The lead-in rate for a seven-day sailing is just under $2,000. Other than VIVA, all-inclusive river cruises are only offered onboard luxury brands, and those are at a much higher price.
  • Short river cruise sailings are uncommon, so VIVA's three- to five-night voyages make great add-ons to a land-based vacation or as sampler cruises for those wanting to try river cruising for the first time.
  • VIVA's variety of embarkation/debarkation ports – such as Passau, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, and Strasbourg – gives clients lots of options of where to begin and end their cruise, and are great for pre- or post-cruise stays. (Other river lines typically start and end their sailings in Amsterdam, Budapest, and Basel.)
  • While VIVA's international guest mix is an excellent way to meet people from all over the world and engage in cultures different from our own, not all clients are comfortable with the concept. It's important to qualify properly and to ensure they are open to sailing onboard a line with an international clientele and atmosphere.

Selling VIVA Cruises With a goal of expanding its North American clientele to 10% of its total, VIVA Cruises' Kruse and Dennis told TMR they are eager to help travel advisors with product and sales training. Advisors can email [email protected] to register themselves to earn commission and receive notices on upcoming training opportunities such as webinars and FAM trips. Once registered, advisors can make bookings online. VIVA offers  15% commission with no NCFs. The VIVA Cruises North American office is located in Ft Lauderdale, and its U.S. website has company and ship information, itineraries, and pricing. VIVA's call center can be reached at 1-833-YES-VIVA (9am to 9pm ET) or by email at [email protected]

Norwegian cancels more than a dozen cruises on 7 ships in 2025

viva cruises

Norwegian Cruise Line canceled more than a dozen cruises on seven ships.

The sailings were scheduled to take place in 2025. The changes “are a result of varied events including the ongoing situation in the Red Sea and Israel, modified dry dock schedules for ship enhancements, a full ship charter, and lastly, to accommodate the demand for shorter close-to-home voyages to the Bahamas,” according to a spokesperson for the line.

The following itineraries were canceled:

  • Norwegian Spirit: Jan. 21, 2025
  • Norwegian Jade: Feb. 20 through and including March 24, 2025
  • Norwegian Sky: April 19 through and including June 5, 2025
  • Norwegian Star: May 17 through and including June 9, 2025
  • Norwegian Viva: May 18 and 27, and Sep. 20 and 29, 2025
  • Norwegian Pearl: Oct. 15, 2025
  • Norwegian Epic: Nov. 1 and 11, 2025

“We are committed to providing exceptional vacation experiences, both aboard our ships and by taking our guests to some of the most sought-out destinations around the world,” the spokesperson said in an emailed statement. “While we try to maintain original itineraries as much as possible, at times modifications are made to optimize the itinerary, enhance the guest experience or accommodate certain circumstances.”

Your cruise was canceled: Now what?

Guests whose cruises were impacted were given full refunds of their fare and a 10% discount in the form of a future cruise credit. The credit can be used on any of Norwegian’s published itineraries through Dec. 31, 2025.

Subscriber only, travel | 8 new ships coming to norwegian cruise line, sister brands plus dock at great stirrup cay.

viva cruises

The parent company to Norwegian Cruise Line announced Monday a major order for eight new ships among its three brands as well as the construction of a pier to allow its cruise ships to dock instead of tender to its private Bahamas island for the first time.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings said it was planning to bring on four new ships for NCL, two new ships for upper premium brand Oceania Cruises and two ships for luxury brand Regent Seven Seas, all to be built at Fincantieri shipyard in Italy and debut during a 10-year run from 2026-2036.

The NCL ships would be the largest ever built for the line at around 200,000 gross tons and capacity of about 5,000 guests. They won’t arrive until after the final delivery of its Prima-Plus class ships expected between 2025-2028, the larger sister ships to the Norwegian Prima and Viva that debuted in the last couple of years. The four ships from the unnamed class of vessel would arrive in 2030, 2032, 2034 and 2036.

The new class for Oceania Cruises, which in 2023 debuted its first new ship in more than a decade — the Oceania Allura — will also be the largest ever built for the line at 86,000 gross tons and a capacity of 1,450 guests. They’re expected in 2027 and 2029.

And the Regent Seven Seas fleet’s new vessels will also be larger coming in at 77,000 gross tons with a capacity of 850 guests. They’re expected in 2026 and 2029. Regent just debuted the third of its Explorer class ships in December 2023.

“This strategic new-ship order across all three of our award-winning brands provides for the steady introduction of cutting-edge vessels into our fleet and solidifies our long-term growth,” said NCLH president and CEO Harry Sommer in a press release. “It also allows us to significantly leverage our operating scale, strengthen our commitment to innovation and enhance our ability to offer our guests new products and experiences, all while providing opportunities to enhance the efficiency of our fleet.”

No other details about the ships were released. Financing is already in place to fund 80% of the cost for the four ships among the Oceania and Regent orders, but financing for the four NCL ships is not finalized.

The eight ships expects to add 25,000 more to the three cruise lines’ passenger capacity.

In addition, the line is set to construct a multi-ship pier at Great Stirrup Cay, the popular Bahamas private destination visited by all three brands. The move follows the introduction of a dock that can support two Oasis-class vessels at neighboring Perfect Day at Coco Cay for Royal Caribbean while other private Bahamas destinations including Disney’s Castaway Cay and its new Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point feature tenderless docks for easy access.

“We are likewise excited with the addition of a new pier at Great Stirrup Cay to support our increased capacity in the Caribbean and multiple ships to call on the island, enhancing our guest experience and bringing seamless and reliable access to our private island year-round,” Sommer said.

Why a major Miami cruise company has canceled over a dozen international trips for 2025

M iami-based Norwegian Cruise Line has canceled at least 14 cruises on 7 ships in 2025 as a booming industry confronts global conflict and other issues.

The cancellations include trips in May and September on Norwegian Viva, the company’s newest ship, and ones in April through June on Norwegian Sky, which frequently sails from PortMiami.

Norwegian said customers who are affected will get a full refund and a 10% discount on future sailings through Dec. 31, 2025.

In a statement, the company said that the cancellations “are a result of varied events, including the ongoing situation in the Red Sea and Israel, modified dry dock schedules for ship enhancements, a full ship charter, and lastly, to accommodate the demand for shorter close-to-home voyages to the Bahamas.”

Suspended trips include the Norwegian Jade from Feb. 20 through March 24, 2025. That ship often departs from Port Canaveral.

Norwegian remains optimistic about cruising. This week, the company ordered eight new ships, its largest ever single purchase, a milestone celebrated at Seatrade Cruise Global, a four-day annual industry conference at the Miami Beach Convention Center. They will be delivered between 2026 and 2036.

Since the terror group Hamas attacked Israel and the Gaza war started in October, cruise companies have been canceling trips to the Middle East.

Next year’s cruise cancellations affect passengers of the Norwegian Epic, Norwegian Sky, and Norwegian Viva.

A March 28 letter to passengers said: “We have been monitoring the situation in Israel, and despite our best hopes that it would de-escalate, we have made the decision to alter published itineraries that transit through and around the region.”

For Epic, the decision was made “in order to reroute her and accommodate the early start to her Caribbean cruise season.”

The Sky will be rerouted around Africa and deployed to Eastern, Western, and Southern Africa, a letter to those passengers said.

Viva is being sent to the Mediterranean, passengers were told in a letter.

Despite any security risks, major airlines including United and Delta have said they will resume flights to Israel. Next week, El Al resumes non-stop service between Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Tel Aviv twice a week. The Israeli airline continues to offer five flights a week from Miami International Airport.

Norwegian in its statement said the cruise company remains committed to taking its guests to “some of the most sought-out destinations around the world.” But sometimes, itineraries need to be modified to “accommodate certain circumstances.”

Other reasons for the cruise changes

But security in the Middle East isn’t the only reason for the changes.

The Norwegian Star canceled because of a “full ship charter.” That means a private organization offered to rent out the whole ship for an entire trip.

The Norwegian Spirit underwent a planned renovation in less time than anticipated, and so now wants to use that time for a longer trip. “As the renovation period will be complete prior to schedule, we now have the opportunity to enhance the originally scheduled January 21, 2025 itinerary, and offer a longer and more immersive experience,” it told guests in a letter.

Meanwhile the canceled sailings on the Norwegian Jade from Feb. 20 through March 25 is “part of a fleet redeployment to accommodate strong demand for cruises through the Panama Canal and to the Bahamas,” the company wrote in a letter to passengers.

Cuba Cruise Guide

Travel advisory: on june 4, 2019, the us government announced new travel restrictions to cuba, effective immediately. as a result, all cruise lines will no longer be permitted to sail to the caribbean island of cuba.  .

Celebrated for its colonial architecture, immaculate white sand beaches, and some of the liveliest people you’ll ever meet, there is plenty to discover on a cruise through the largest island in the Caribbean.

In recent years, more operators have been offering cruises to Cuba, allowing travelers to immerse themselves in the signature architecture, fascinating history, and pulsating rhythms of this Caribbean island. Though known primarily for their scenic stretches of powder-soft beaches and startlingly blue oceans, there’s more to Cuba than just sand and surf. Beyond the beautiful beaches lies a land of lush forests, rugged mountains and remarkable architecture that harken back to more opulent times.

Passengers disembarking from a Cuba cruise will set foot in a country that seems to be from another moment in time. Still reeling from the effects of an economic embargo that has lasted for more than half a century, Cuba isn’t nearly as developed as the other Caribbean islands. However, it’s Cuba’s timeworn yet dignified atmosphere that make this country such a fascinating place to travel to, especially by cruise. A Cuba cruise vacation is an ideal way to see this colorful Caribbean country, as it allows you the opportunity to venture out to far-flung islands, and you have the opportunity to visit a handful of ports in several days, which would be an impossible feat to accomplish by car.

When it comes to Cuba cruises, there are three main itineraries to choose from. Cuba cruises of shorter duration do a port stop in Havana either for a full day, or overnight. This allows passengers to partake in at least one full-day shore excursion. A partial Cuba circumnavigation cruise allows passengers to spend more than one night in Cuba. Typically, these cruises make ports of call in Santiago de Cuba and Cienfuegos. Lastly, a full Cuba circumnavigation cruise sets sail around the entire island, making stops at more untouched ports of call, such as La Isla de Juventud, which is home to some of the most beautiful, untouched beaches in Cuba.

It’s easy for Cuba cruise passengers to get swept up in the charms of Havana. Apart from a walking tour of the architectural gem of Old Havana, a typical port stop in Havana could include a classic car tour of the city, an in-depth look into one of the many cigar factories and rum distilleries, or a night out at the famous Buena Vista Social Club. Santiago de Cuba is the cradle of the Cuban Revolution, and the landscape of this exhilarating city is peppered with monuments of the country’s revolutionary leaders. Son -- Cuba’s popular national music -- originated here, and there are many venues where passengers can develop an appreciation for this rhythmic music. Cienfuegos and Trinidad are two UNESCO World Heritage Sites that are within driving distance of each other. Trinidad is famed for their cobble stone streets lined with pastel-colored houses, while Cienfuegos is known for having a large number of beautifully preserved neo-classical buildings.

December through March is the best time to embark on a Cuba cruise, when the weather isn’t nearly as humid. Although the island’s tropical climate makes cruising to Cuba ideal year-round, from May to October the temperature and humidity reach their peak levels. If you’re able to bear the high temperature and humidity, July would be a good time for a Cuba cruise vacation as you can partake in the lively Carnival festival that takes place in Santiago de Cuba.

Norwegian Cruise Line is canceling over a dozen cruises 2025.  The cruise line is nixing multiple voyages throughout next year, Norwegian confirmed to Travel + Leisure on Friday. "The recent 2025 itinerary cancelations are a result of varied events including the ongoing situation in the Red Sea and Israel, modified dry dock schedules for ship enhancements, a full ship charter, and lastly, to accommodate the demand for shorter close-to-home voyages to the Bahamas," a spokesperson for the cruise line told T+L.

The affected itineraries are as follows:

  • Norwegian Epic - , Feb. 20, 2025, Nov. 1, 2025, Nov. 11, 2025
  • Norwegian Jade - Mar. 4, 2025, Mar. 13, 2025, Mar. 24, 2025
  • Norwegian Pearl - Apr. 19, 2025, May 5, 2025, May 16, 2025, Oct. 15, 2025
  • Norwegian Sky - May 27, 2025, Jun. 5, 2025
  • Norwegian Spirit - Jan. 1, 2025, May 17, 2025
  • Norwegian Star - May 18, 2025, May 29, 2025, Jun. 9, 2025,
  • Norwegian Viva - May 27, 2025, Sep. 20, 2025, Sep. 29, 2025

The spokesperson also shared with T+L that guests impacted by the cancellations will receive a full refund and a 10% percent discount in the form of a Future Cruise Credit towards any sailing through Dec. 31, 2025. "In addition, we understand the inconvenience and frustration this disruption may cause affected guests, so we have shared alternative sailings similar to their original booking," the spokesperson added, encouraging impacted guests to head to contact the company at 1-800-327-7030 for more information.

In February 2024, NCL also announced it would no longer dock in Venice, Italy, due to restrictions of the waterways.  “While we have made every effort possible to maintain these calls to Venice, the tender operation and overall experience this provides our guests has fallen short of the standard we aim to deliver,” a spokesperson from NCL told T+L at the time.  Despite the cancellations, the cruise industry continues to rebound since COVID-19 closures. The industry is expected to grow to 130 million global passengers in 2026, which is up from 73 million global passengers in 2022, according to a 2023 report from the Cruise Lines International Association.

Flusskreuzfahrten All-Inclusive
