western queensland tours

While Queensland is famous for its gorgeous coastline and stunning beaches , there are numerous Outback Queensland towns that everyone should have on their bucket list.  Outback Queensland is not only all about wide open spaces and red dirt, but the Queensland Outback is also full of amazing natural attractions, fascinating museums, quirky events and a range of experiences which you will never forget.

The best way to explore these remote towns in Australia is by taking a road trip.  But be warned, the Queensland Outback is a massive place and is not something that can be explored over a few weeks.  Your best to pick a region such as North West, Far West, Central West, East West or South West and choose a few of the outback towns to visit.

If you’re considering an Outback Queensland road trip, but have no idea where to begin, then reading this guide on the very best regional Queensland towns is a great place to start.  With the help of a few travel bloggers, I’ve compiled a list of the best small towns in Queensland to visit with kids.

Below I’ve broken the towns to visit between the five regions – North West, Far West, Central West, East West or South West.

North West Region

Four hours west of Townsville you’ll find the north west region of the outback.  Here you can take an underground mine tour, see dinosaur fossils, and explore amazing National Parks.

Below we’ve listed some of the best outback towns to visit in the North West Region of Queensland.

Andy from Queensland Camping

While Mt Isa is primarily known as a mining town, the area surrounding the town has some great rugged terrain for 4WDing, man made lakes perfect for fishing and jaw dropping gorgeous national parks.  In fact Mt Isa is known as the “oasis of the outback”.

Of course Mt Isa is one of the Australian outback towns well known for its mining, so one of the best things to do in Mt Isa is to take an underground tour of a mine shaft.  The kids will love putting on their orange overalls, gumboots and hard hats as they go underground.  During the tour, you’ll get a close up view of all the mining equipment and hear first hand stories from your guide.

Also be sure to visit the world heritage Australian Fossil Mammal Sites at Riversleigh and Naracoorte.  Here you will find some of the world’s oldest fossils dating back to some 25 million years ago.  The site is 277km from Mt Isa, so if you’re short on time, you can get a glimpse of what’s on offer at the Fossil Centre in town.

Other outback Queensland attractions to visit in Mt Isa include a trip out to the old Mary Kathleen Mine, the underground hospital and museum, the Isa Experience Gallery, the City Lookout for views across the city (best at night) and the Lake Lookout to watch the sunset over Lake Moondarra.  Also if you happen to be in town while the rodeo is on, make sure you check it out – this is the southern hemisphere’s largest rodeo.

Like most rural Queensland towns, the best time to visit Mt Isa is during the early Spring or late autumn, when the weather isn’t too hot.  Avoid January and February when the weather is at its hottest.

For families doing a Queensland camping road trip, there are a few caravan parks in town which is helpful particularly if you have a caravan.  All the parks also have cabins too.  Click here for full details of accommodation in town.

Julia Creek

western queensland tours

Emma from MY RIG Adventures

As you head west on your Outback Queensland adventures, be sure to stop in at Julia Creek.  Even though it’s only a tiny little town (with a population of 400), it is honestly one of the friendliest communities you’ll visit as a traveller.

Without a doubt, Julia Creek’s claim to fame is their unique Artesian Bath experience, located in the town’s Caravan Park . Lined up, with the most perfect views of the Australian Outback are four private Bath Houses, with two free-standing tubs in each one.  For your 45-minute time slot, the whole family can enjoy the steaming hot (or warm) mineral water, drawn straight from the Great Artesian Basin below.  You can choose to go for the all-natural experience or wear your swimsuits, as each bath is disinfected between sessions.

Another family highlight worth adding to your itinerary while you’re in town is the Dunnart Feeding at the Information Centre.  The feeding shows run 7 days per week with a minimal cost of $5 per adult and $2 per child.  All proceeds go directly towards ‘Donald’ and ‘Duncan’s’ special dietary requirements, maintenance, enclosures and health checks.  So, you’ll be directly supporting the ‘Save the Dunnart’ cause!

The kids will also love the Water Park.  Yep, this teeny town in the middle of Outback Queensland has its very own Water Park – which is pretty darn cool!  There are two water slides, water cannons & fountains, plus a 25m lap pool and a splash pool for the little ones.  If you stay at the local Caravan Park you can gain entry into the pool and water park for free, otherwise it’s $2 per adult and $1 per child.

The best time of the year to head out to Julia Creek is between May and August where the average daytime temperatures range from 27℃ – 32℃. These are also the drier months, meaning you won’t have to deal with seasonal rain or potential flooding. Be aware that the nights will still get cold, as the temperatures can drop to around 7℃ after the sun goes down.

Mt Surprise

western queensland tours

Natalie and Steve from Curious Campers

Mount Surprise is 600 km east of Normanton or 380 km south west of Cairns in Queensland Savanah Country. It is one of the small outback towns in Australia but is nevertheless a fantastic place to take the kids.

Most families head here, lured by the promise of finding a colourful gem and so fossicking at Mount Surprise is often the main attraction. The Gem Den will happily supply you with all the equipment and directions to the O’Brien’s Creek gem fields where you can dig and sieve for hours.  With any luck, you’ll find a few small crystals, but even if you don’t, you can enjoy the great display of gems and minerals at the BP Roadhouse.

The Undara Lava Tubes 30 minutes from Mount Surprise are the other feature in the area. The kids will love exploring the lava tubes on a tour and hearing about the volcanic history of the area.

For families on a road trip, the Bedrock Village Caravan Park is a great place to stay.  There are some excellent facilities for the kids here, including a swimming pool and minigolf. The place has a relaxed vibe, it is super neat and tidy and you won’t find friendlier, hands-on owners.

The best time to visit the region is between April and October. This might not be the place for young children, but if your kids are old enough to shovel dirt and like the idea of finding some hidden treasure then give Mount Surprise a try.

western queensland tours

Hughenden is another one of the great small towns in Australia, which is a brilliant place to visit with kids.  Here you will find with four different national parks to explore as well as rich fossils and dinosaur areas.

Hughenden is located in “dinosaur country”, making it one of the best towns in Queensland to visit if you’re interested in dinosaurs.  The town is on the edge of a large prehistoric inland sea, which was once home to dinosaurs and marine reptiles.   You can’t miss the giant fibreglass replica of a Muttaburrasaurus Dinosaur which is in the middle of town and the kids will love searching for dinosaur fossils, stop at the Flinders Discovery Centre for a map.

One of the highlights of Hughenden is the Porcupine Gorge National Park, known as Australia’s “Little Grand Canyon”.  This area is just stunning with towering sandstone cliffs, a clear flowing creek and dense vegetation.  At the park, you can check out a range of lookouts and walking tracks to really appreciate the gorge.  There are also a few waterholes where you can go swimming.

Other things to do Hughenden include exploring the regions other three national parks, a visit to the historical Coolabah Tree and the Surveyor’s Peg.

Like most Queensland outback towns, Hughenden is best avoided in the peak of summer, but generally, any other time of the year is ideal.

For families on a road trip, there is a caravan park in town which also has cabin accommodation.  There is also a free campground.

Far West Region

In the farthest corner of Queensland, on the border of the Northern Territory and South Australia, the Far West Region is well worth the journey.  Here you will find stunning red sand dunes, swimming holes and a range of Queensland Outback tours and experiences you’ll remember for a lifetime.

Below we’ve listed some of the best outback towns to visit in the Far West Region of Queensland.

western queensland tours

Birdsville is way out west, not too far from the South Australia border and has a tiny population of just 115.  Despite its small population and remote location, Birdsville is home to one of the most popular Outback Queensland events – the Birdsville Races, which are said to be the Melbourne Cup of the Outback!

Apart from the famous Birdsville Races, the main attraction in town is it’s proximity to the dunes of the Simpson Desert.  The must do thing here is to watch a sunset from the top of Big Red, which at 40 metres high is the tallest sand dune in the Simpson Desert.

Other things to do in Birdsville include having a drink at the Birdsville Hotel, Deon’s Lockout for spectacular views, the Birdsville Billabong for swimming, kayaking and wildlife spotting,  a visit to the Burke and Wills Tree and a stroll around town admiring the heritage buildings.

As to when to visit Birdsville, just keep in mind that this is one of the hottest places in Australia during the Summer.  With that in mind, the best time to visit is pretty much any time between May to September.

Families can stay at the Birdsville Caravan Park where you can pitch a tent, park your van or stay in a cabin.  There are also a couple of hotels in town too.

Gosh if you thought Birdsville’s population of 115 was small, how about 80!  Windorah is a tiny outback town located in the heart of Channel Country near Cooper’s Creek.

The term Channel Country refers to the network of waterways that expand up to 80kms across the region during a flood.  This in turn produces the perfect pastures for feeding cattle.  Plus it creates some fantastic waterholes which are ideal for campers and those who enjoy fishing.

Perhaps the biggest highlight of Windorah is the stunning Windorah Sand Hills.  Located near the Ourdel Station, here you will enjoy some amazing views of some of the reddest sands in Australia – just gorgeous!  Watch the sunset and enjoy a glass of wine.

Other things to do in Windorah include a visit to the Whitula Gate Museum where you can see what life was like for families in the area back in the 1800s, see the Native Wells, visit the Windorah Solar Farm and take the self guided history tour around town – pick up a guide at the Visitor Information Centre.

Families can book in a stay at the Windorah Caravan Park, or there is the Cooper Cabins and Western Star Motel.  There is also a free camp too.

Central West Region

The Central West Region is a must for anyone’s Outback Queensland itinerary.  There is a stack of attractions out here as well as being the birthplace to Qantas, Waltzing Matilda and the Australian Labor Party.  It also a popular destination for families thanks to being home to the world’s most extensive collection of Australian dinosaur fossils.

Below we’ve listed some of the best outback towns to visit in the Central West Region of Queensland.

western queensland tours

Located between Longreach and Mt Isa, most families visiting Winton are here for one thing – dinosaurs!  Hunting for dinosaurs is one of the most popular things to do in Outback Queensland among families.  However Winton is so much more than just being the dinosaur capital of Australia it is also where Banjo Patterson wrote Australia’s unofficial anthem “Waltzing Matilda” and there are a few other attractions worth checking out too.

For the dinosaur seekers, head to Lark Quarry Conservation Park where you can view thousands of footprints from dinosaurs that roamed the land some 95 million years ago.  Also don’t miss the Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum which is home to the worlds most extensive Australian dinosaur fossil collection.

Other things to do in Winton include a visit to the Musical Fence, watch a movie at the Royal Open Theatre, visit the Waltzing Matilda Centre, see Arno’s Wall and stroll down the main street spotting the quirky signs and monuments.

For those visiting in a caravan, there is the Matilda Country Tourist Park, North Gregory Hotel as well as a free campsite too.  There is also a range of cabins and a few motels in town too.

If you love dinosaurs – check out our guide to Eromanga where you can find Australia’s largest dinosaur fossils!

Matt from More Dirt Less Bitumen

No trip to Outback Queensland is complete without a visit to Longreach. Longreach is the ‘Gateway to the Outback’ and has so much to offer the travelling public, especially if you’ve got a couple of kids in tow!

There are so many things to do in Longreach, that the biggest problem you’re going to have is working out what to do first, and how on earth are you going to fit it all in. As an absolute minimum, I would recommend a three day stay.

Kick it off with a visit to the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame. You can easily spend the day wandering through each of the five galleries taking in the eclectic mix of artefacts, AV presentations and interactive exhibits.  While you’re at the Hall of Fame, don’t miss out on the Outback Stockman’s Show. This live show tells the story of the stockmen and women who work the land and features horses, sheep and working dogs.

Next up is the QANTAS Founders Museum where you can take a step back in time and learn about the founding of one of the world’s great airlines – QANTAS. Take a tour and sit in the cockpit, or perhaps you’d like to go for a walk out the wing of a Boeing 747?

Also don’t miss an outback sunset with a Thomson River Sunset Cruise. Enjoy cold drinks and nibblies as you glide down the river as the sun dips below the horizon.

Other highlights in the area include a visit to Camden Park Station, a trip on a Cobb & Co Coach or a drive out to Captain Starlight’s Lookout.

western queensland tours

For those with an interest in the trade union movement, Barcaldine is an outback town you must visit.  This small rural town played a significant role in the Australian Labor movement

The first stop should be to the Tree of Knowledge which was the central meeting place during the Great Shearers Strike in 1891.  A result of this strike was the birth of the Australian Labor Party.  Although the tree stood for more than 180 years, sadly in 2006, it was poisoned, but the tree has been preserved and is best viewed at night when it’s lit up.

Also visit the Australian Workers Heritage Centre which is a museum dedicated to the lives of everyday working people.  Here you will learn about the lives of railways workers, blacksmiths, farmers and more – all the working people that helped shaped our country into what it is today.

Other things to do in Barcaldine include the Aramac Tramway Museum, the Barcaldine and District Folk Museum, take a tour of the Dunraven Sheep Station and take in a sunset at the Lara Wetlands.

Barcaldine has a couple of tourist parks in town for those needing somewhere to park their van as well as a few motels.

Sapphire, Rubyvale and Emerald

western queensland tours

Sinead from Best in York Guide

The outback towns of Sapphire, Rubyvale and Emerald are a great place to visit with kids as there are diverse attractions that you will not find elsewhere in Australia. These small Australian towns and the surrounding rural area are best explored using your own vehicle in early Spring or late Autumn to avoid searing temperatures.

Take a trip to Emerald to see the world’s largest copy of the painting ‘Sunflowers’ by Van Gogh, set 25 metres off the ground on an enormous easel. Try a new water sport on Lake Maraboon or visit the emerald’s beautiful Botanic Gardens.

In Sapphire, which is one of the world’s richest sapphire bearing regions, kids can join a fossicking trip into the bush with an experienced gem hunter. Kids will love digging and sorting through the arid earth to find hidden treasure. Hard, hot work can bring great rewards – our daughter found $300 worth of sapphires!

Follow the Gemfields Treasure Trail in the centre of Sapphire, a self-guided trail which portrays the history and stories of the gem industry in this area.

I would recommend staying at Sapphire Caravan Park, which offers fully equipped holiday cottages in addition to camping and motorhome pitches. It is a beautiful 4-acre park with large pitches and secluded plots that are visited at dawn and dusk by kangaroos, parrots and kookaburras.

East West Region

The East West Region is full of stunning natural attractions such as national parks with spectacular gorges, rivers and lakes.  The region is popular among fisherman and watersport enthusiasts as well as having several historical villages and museums to explore.

Below we’ve listed some of the best outback towns to visit in the East West Region of Queensland.

western queensland tours

Located in the Sandstone Wonders region, just west of the Queensland Capricorn Coast,  Biloela is a busy little commercial and tourist hub with a population of almost 6000 people. “Bilo” as it’s referred to by locals, has a rich pioneering, mining and indigenous history.

Stop by the Queensland Heritage Park which has various displays of rural life.  Here you will find heritage buildings, farming equipment and other old machinery artefacts.  Another great place to visit is the Greycliffe Homestead which houses the Biloela Historical Society.  This is a brilliant old homestead built in the 1870s from the materials found on the property.

If you want to get outdoors head to the Kroombit Tops National Park which features towering ridges, deep gorges and panoramic views or go to Callide Dam for some fishing.  On the way to the dam, be sure to stop at the Mine Lookout for great views across the dam.

Other places to visit in Biloela include the large scale Spirit of the Land Mural which pays homage to the early pioneers and Indigenous people and is now an iconic landmark in the town.

Biloela has a wide range of accommodation options including caravan parks, cabins and motel rooms.  Discovery Parks is a great place for families.  Click here for a full list of accommodation options.

South West Region

The South West Region has some diverse landscapes, from red sands to wetlands and gorgeous national parks.  Experiences here range from wildlife encounters, soaking in mud baths and hot springs, dinosaur attractions as well as the chance to view the amazing night sky.

Below we’ve listed some of the best outback towns to visit in the South West Region of Queensland.

Charleville

western queensland tours

Tracy from Tracy’s Travels in Time

Charleville is in the Shire of Murweh approximately 750 km by road from Brisbane. With a population of around 3,500 it is the largest town in Queensland’s south west.  There are several attractions which make Charleville a great place to stop off for families on a road trip around outback Queensland.

First off is the excellent Cosmos Centre and Observatory. The informative talks given at the observatory are an excellent way for both adults and kids to learn about the night sky. The highlight of the evening is the ability to look through one of the four telescopes at the centre and really appreciate the stars, planets and milky way. Due to the dark skies around Charleville, it is incredible what you can see with the naked eye even without a telescope! At certain times of the year, through the telescope, you can also see the rings of Saturn in amazing clarity. It is a really special experience that the kids will really love.

Another absolute must visit in Charleville is the Bilby Centre. Bilbys are an endangered species and in an attempt to protect them there is a captive breeding program based in Charleville. Learn all about Bilbys – where they live, what they eat and how we can help to prevent this native Australian animal from extinction at the centre. There is also an opportunity to see some of the centre’s Bilbys after the talk. With their huge ears and long noses, there is something Harry Potterseque about these cute little animals.

A third place to add to your Charleville to-visit list is the Royal Flying Doctor Service which is based at in the town. Take a look inside the working RFDS hangar at the planes before popping into the visitor centre and learning all about the work of the Flying Doctor Service and the vital role it plays in outback Queensland.

If history is an interest, then don’t miss a visit to the Historic House Museum which is filled with all sorts of treasures from the 19th century and 20th centuries. The museum building itself dates back to 1887 and was formerly the town’s bank!

These are just three of the things to do in Charleville, making it a highlight on any outback road trip in Australia.

Click here for accommodation options in Charleville or find our full guide on things to do with kids in Charleville here .

Daneen from Queensland Camping

Many people add a stop in Mitchel during their road trips to relax at the Great Artesian Spa.  At the Great Artesian Spa, you’ll find naturally heated mineralised waters.

But the spas aren’t all there is to see in town.  Take a step back in time and stop at the Booringa Heritage museum or explore the Yumbas indigenous “bush tukka trail” which starts at the Mitchell Caravan Park and has several totems on display of the “Gungarri” people.

The favourite attraction in town for our kids was the Old Kenniff Courthouse where they learnt about the notorious Bushrangers, Patrick and James Kenniff.  They also quite enjoyed the yummy treats on offer at the Mitchell Bakery.

In Mitchell, I’d recommend staying at the Major Mitchell Park and Cabins which has great family accommodation.  The caravan park is located on the banks of the Maranoa River and offers a variety of accommodation where you can stay in a cabin, set up your van or pitch a tent. It also just happens to be right across the road from the Great Artesian Spa.

The best but busiest time to visit Mitchel is in the dry season from April to October.

Matt from Exercises.com.au

Roma, Qld is a great place in outback Queensland to visit with kids as they’ll love the feel of being in the countryside and discovering a taste of country living.

To keep them entertained, one of the best things to do in Roma for kids is checking out the Big Rig Show where they’ll learn about the rigs and machinery that helped shape Roma’s contribution to Australia’s oil and gas industry. The museum offers both guided and self-guide tours.

Another unique activity is to take them to the Roma Saleyards, where the sale of cattle takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It’s the largest saleyard in the southern hemisphere. Visitor tours begin from 8:30 am.

Also don’t leave town with checking out the Bottle Trees, with one in particular in Edwardes Street having a circumference of 9.5 metres!

The best time of year to visit Roma is anytime outside of the middle of summer or winter unless you don’t mind very hot or very cold weather. And the easiest way to get there is by car (road trip!), mainly so that you can get around town while you’re visiting.

There’s several affordable motels and inns to choose from for accommodation, all centrally located with some featuring an outdoor pool.  Click here for a full list of accommodation options.   You can read our complete guide to Roma with kids here.

Bryony from Coasting Australia

Definitely one for the bucket list is a visit to the small town of Eulo, located in the Shire of Paroo in South West Queensland, just over 60kms west of Cunnamulla and almost 900kms west of Brisbane.

The highlight in Eulo is experiencing an outdoor Artesian Mud Bath.  Here they add grey mud from local ancient springs to warm bathwater.  You’ll also be served a glass of wine and a snack platter, as you relax and rejuvenate looking up at the trees and sky. They have family friendly areas with more than one bathtub and even dogs are welcome to come and watch!

Also Eulo is an opal mining town, but if you’re looking for family fossicking in Queensland , you’ll need to head out to Yowah which is 90kms west.   Here you can search for the famous ‘Yowah Nut’ opal and take a dip in the natural hot artesian pools – perfect after a day in the dust of the desert!

Other things to do in the town include the WW2 air raid shelter, checking out the incredible rock and gem collections at the local shops and exploring the history of the town.

A great place for families to stay is at the camping area at the “Eulo Queen’ pub, named after Isabel Grey, the colourful opal-loving matriarch who lived in the town over a century ago. Just opposite the pub is a life-size Diprotodon statue (which looks like a giant wombat!), celebrating the recent Megafauna discoveries in the town.

What a fantastic article on Outback Queensland. I’ve ticked quite a few of these destinations off my list, but I’ve still got a couple to go. I can’t wait to get back out there.

Amazing 4 weeks in Oz! The organization of the hostel check-ins and the Greyhound rides were very good. Shannon was the most lovely tour leader and always ready to help with everything, which made the trip even better. Also the time we spent in each place felt just right. Only thing I would change about the itinerary are a bit more activities and less full free days. But overall it was a great experience!

What people love about Queensland Tours

The trip was great. However, I didn’t like the hostel in Airlie Beach. It was the worst one in this trip. Overall was great
Really good trip with value for your money. We saw a lot of Australia in such a short time, given how massive Australia really is. Our guide, Tamar, was an absolute sweetheart, knowledgeable, well travelled and very professional. This tour has the right balance of group activities and independent activities if you choose to do so. My only complaint is that some of the accommodations were subpar, which was disappointing given the high cost of this trip.
Had such a great time on the 3 week tour and Hannah was the best tour guide we could ask for! She was so knowledgeable and always so keen to help (and would go and research the answers to any weird questions she didn’t know the answers to). She even made the weather hold out for us for most of the tour! ;)

Thank you Ross for helping us to achieve reaching the tip of Australia, the helicopter ride over the tip. With out your help we would not had the best holiday. We will talk about this trip and what we achieved for years to come. Looking forward to our next adventure with you Peter & Sandra 10 out 10 from us

Madigan Line

This was a magical tour, with two competent guides, who always made us feel safe in their hands. We didn't just have a holiday or an adventure in the desert but we also learned how to be better drivers. This was such a different experience than any other, I recommend it and I would totally do it again. The landscape was breathtaking, the sunsets astonishing, the wildlife magistic , the wildflowers stunning, but it was the friendships we made that will make the lasting memories. The tour guides made everyone feel like part of their family, welcoming and relaxed and genuine. Ross now knows how to make damper in the camp oven, so be sure to ask him for his world famous desert damper.

Simpson & Beyond

Review written as a passenger on the July/August 2023 Simpson and Beyond 16-day tour. Firstly, thanks Ross and Kenny for running this tour as 4 vehicles had to pull out and it left a group of 6 people to attempt the Simpson. Hopefully the small number travelling and faster drive times with less tows made up for the jinx amongst us who caused 3 tyre issues. There were other issues with the Lead vehicles and both Kenny and Ross displayed the skills to repair the vehicles enough to get to a mechanic. I hope that this trial run ironed out any problems likely on the 2 Madigan Line tours that followed. K & R say that it takes about 6 sand dunes before the tagalongs feel confident to tackle the dunes on their own. But at all times the guys are giving advice as to the direction the dunes turn once on the top. Safety is a big issue and they call the tagalongs through once the lead vehicle is on the flat over the dunes. Interesting to understand the protocol of calling through to any vehicles in the area once going through marker points in the Simpson. We were offered an alternative pick-up point which was appreciated as the town had more flights and more to see while waiting for the tour to start. As we were such a small group and were ready, we left a day earlier so got a 17-day tour which was handy with a 2 night stop at Mt Dare to do repairs and rest before going on to Alice Springs. As passengers, most meals are included bar a few pub meals at own cost. Ross and I did a ‘fast’ shop getting food items specifically that my husband and I wanted to eat. Choose wisely as lunch stops are short and on the go which enabled early arrivals into camp most days. Evening meals were of a meat and 3 vegetable style with a sauce accompanying it, healthy and filling. Suggest taking along a thermal mug or small thermos as the kettle is usually only boiled in the morning. The stretcher with swag on top was comfortable to get into and out of, if not much room to do anything, like reading, once inside it. Suggest taking along a device to play music or podcasts. The provided toilet tent for out in the desert was appreciated and with only 6 people there was never much of a wait time. We were lucky enough to see about 50 camels (in 3 groups) and 30 emus (in one group) plus the wildflowers in fields of colours were wonderful. We also appreciated that the tour went on many different roads/lines in the area so had the opportunity to visit many lookouts and sites. Ross and Kenny both were very obliging to any needs we had as far as stopping to take photographs or logistics once we were on foot in towns. Highly recommend Kookaburra Tagalong Tours as an option for a passenger and look forward to possibly doing another tour in 2025. V (and B)

This trip has it all. If you love getting off the blacktop and getting back to nature, this trip is for you. There are hidden gems, spectacular scenery, towns that ooze country charm, mountains, rolling hills, valleys, rivers and creeks, and good old Aussie country pubs. History for the history buffs, and flora and fauna for nature lovers all mixed in with endless photo opportunities as you travel along roads and tracks few get to see. All at a leisurely pace and to top it off, your guide is the best you will ever get to travel with; what Tiny doesn’t know isn’t worth knowing.

Kookaburra Tagalong Tours We have just finished a tagalong tour crossing of the Simpson Desert Munga Thirri in Australia. We hired 4WD vehicles and joined Koolaburra Tagalong Tours. We crossed Birdsville to Mt Dare then up to Old Andado then back across via the Madigan line to Birdsville. Kookaburra Tagalong were absolutely fantastic, highly recommend. We had a great group. What a blast! We undertook the Kookaburra Tours tag-a-long tour of the Simpson desert in August '23. The guides were incredibly warm, capable and trustworthy of getting us out of any strife in the dunes should it have occurred. The breathtakung sun rises and sunsets, the fond memories of sitting by night camp fires beneath glowing stars telling yarns to each other, the long lasting friendships made with other members in tbe group, the beautiful and varied wildflowers, the excitement we all experienced with seeing dingoes and other wildlife, and the endearing stories told through the eyes of our dear mascots kooka and emu.... a must do for anyone seeking adventure in the vast Australian outback. We will carry those fond memories with us forever and extend many thanks to Ross and Kenny for their amazing organisation and leadership. We'll be back! Tania & Elaine

Simpson 2023

It's the great friendship between Ross and Ken that sets the relaxed casual mood for a wonderful crossing of the Simpson Desert, which we have just completed, with these principals of Kookaburra Tagalong Tours. Having no experience in desert driving, nor sand dune crossing, we appreciated Ross and Ken's pre-trip advice and assurances in the preparation of our vehicle. During the actual crossing, knowing that Ross and Ken had prepared all official passes, identified campsites, had emergency equipment and contact capability available, combined with their wealth of practical knowledge and experience, allowed us to relax and enjoy the excitement and scenic beauty of this rarely seen part of Australia. Thankyou to both of you and all the best in your future tours, Gail and Noel

Anzac & Pub Tour 2023

We had the pleasure recently of travelling with Kookaburra Outback Tours on their Pub and Anzac Tour and visited a variety of different places including Cunnamulla, Tibooburra , Broken Hill and others. The experience was great and we learned of the history of the towns at the stopovers, learned a lot about the opal mines and the resilience of the miners and had fun with the rest of the team over the campfires at night and also learned some of their stories which were also very interesting. We were impressed by the caring nature of the guides towards the travellers especially when there was a need (and there were a couple). Everyone should see more of Australia! Gary & Cheryl

Could not asked for more

We travelled across the Simpson Desert to Mount Dare & back to Birdsville via the Madigan Line. We were expertly guided by Kookaburra tours under the guidance of Kenny & Ross. We could not have asked for more from them. We left Birdsville on the 11 Aug, returning Saturday 20. with a total of 11 cars chasing each other. It was enjoyable to have the company of others as we endured what the desert had to offer. Thanks Ross

Bucket List

My recent Kookaburra Tagalong tour of Arnhem Land and Kakadu was a bucket list trip which was made completely enjoyable by Ross and Kenny. Ross was able to be flexible and adaptable when dealing with issues that were encountered on the trip such as rain that was unexpected during the dry season. He was vey adept at reorganising and rescheduling to suit changing conditions. Kenny is a most capable right hand man and together with Ross make a formidable team. I would not hesitate to recommend Kookaburra Tagalong tours for those wishing to experience the outback in a safe and friendly environment. Ron

Highly Recommended

Highly recommended I just completed the 11 day Madigan line tagalong tour. the tour leaders Ross and Ken were excellent and highly knowledgeable about this area. It's a great way to travel remotely as there's and instant group of friends and help if there's any glitches. I'll put my name down for one of there tours for next year.'

Go as a Passenger

Go as a passenger. If you would like to enjoy the outback without the cost or hassle of owning your own 4WD vehicle, check out Kookaburratagalongtours options to go as a passenger. I did the 15 daySimpson desert tour and spent my days sitting with Ross as he guided the 5 other vehicles over red sand dunes, gravel and Sandy tracks. I saw places I never thought to see, slept in a swag or a tent most nights. The night sky’s were gobsmacking and the company funny and excited to be out learning and testing their own skills. Ross and Kenny were great guides and everyone seemed to grow in confidence as the days passed. Happy to chat with anyone who might be interested. All I had to take was a sleeping bag. All good and sleeping arrangements taken care of by Ross and Kenny.

Simpson Desert & Beyond 2022

Thank you Ross and Kenny for leading a group of 4wd novices across the desert and back to Birdsville. As the only single driver I have to say that whilst it was tiring it was really exhilarating to know that I had driven across this amazing remote area with its awesome and expansive beauty. I loved the flowers, the colours and the landscapes. The company was just the best. 4 couples old enough to know the best of humour- Monty Python and the rest; great music, historical and geographical references in our afternoon quiz and the hilarity of Kooka News of the day usually round a crackingly good campfire. I really hope we keep in touch - it was such a great time! The Lake Eyre option was just magnificent. So many tour highlights, so much learning and such a huge , exciting and beautiful experience. I can commend this trip to everyone with a 4wd, sense of humour and adventure and love of the great outdoors. Thanks again Ross and Kenny- great job! Thanks

western queensland tours

We completed the 15 day July 22 Simpson Desert and beyond tagalong and had a great time. As novice 4wd people, we were thankful that Ross and Kenny ensured we were able to safely develop our skills while seeing unique and remote areas of central Australia, highlights being the crossing of the Simpson desert with time on all the major tracks and traveling on the Oonadatta track through the painted desert. Ross and Kenny are very flexible and relaxed in their style and are always striving to make sure you gain maximum value and they are always available to assist. This is a safe and hassle free way of visiting remote areas with like minded people and we have no hesitation in recommending Ross and Kenny from Kookaburra tagalong tours. Mark and Julie Gower

Thoroughly enjoyed

We thoroughly enjoyed our “Anzac/Outback Pubs Tour” with Kookaburra Tagalong Tours. The travelling was relaxed with the aim of the tour to enjoy unusual and iconic pubs of the outback. Experiencing Anzac Day in the Opal Fields of Lightning Ridge was a special highlight. When roads were closed due to rain, Ross always ensured we had a safe alternative to our next destination. Nothing was too much trouble, including a request from some of the guests to add in an extra feature not mentioned in the original itinerary. Thankyou Ross and Ken for a most memorable tagalong experience. Sue and Clive Gotlieb”.

A Fantastic Trip

In 2018, I joined Ken & Ross in a convoy of 7 vehicles to explore the Simpson Desert. It was a fantastic trip, and the landscape was spectacular. We travelled from Birdsville across the Simpson Desert and returned via the lesser-known Madigan Line. I felt totally included in the group and the atmosphere of fun and banter around the campfire each night was memorable. This was a trip I’d been wanting to do for years however I just didn’t have the confidence or the CAN DO attitude to tackle it on my own. Travelling tagalong style, I knew that my safety was never in doubt and that certainly changed my attitude and increased my confidence. The trip was well-organised and informative, and the communication was excellent. When we arrived back in Birdsville to find our original route flooded, the team were quick to plan an alternative so that our adventure could continue. Good onya Ross & Kenny!

Cheers, Paul

Would I do another tag-along, yes in a heartbeat

We joined the tag-along tour for a Simpson Desert crossing. At first I thought it was just another added expense, as we usually did our own thing. After a very short time we were bogged in a very difficult situation, which with the combined experience, sharing of equipment, and the company and help of the others in the group, disaster was averted. Puncture repairs and tyre changes are certainly made easier with assistance from your fellow travellers, as they normally happen in the most difficult circumstances. Entry to normally closed areas was accessed with preplanned permits and permission to enjoy sites not normally seen. Advice on carrying petrol and alcohol were advised to avoid hefty fines of up to $30,000, and or jail in some areas. Permits are long drawn out affairs, that are expensive, especially for single tourers, and can be explicit on times of arrival and transitioning some lands that have many hidden treasures not accessible to most. The comfort of having experienced guides and support in times of 4WD'ing difficult terrain is fantastic, along with the fellowship in the evening, and discussing the day gone, and the challenges ahead. Providing your own food and meal requirements was important to me, as I have some special medical and dietary requirements. Safety and backup is important when exploring out of the way places, which was well covered by the tour leaders. Would I do another tag-along, yes in a heartbeat, and we have booked two more trip for this year.

Very organised and a great leader

To whom it may concern I have known Ross for several years and have accompanied him on a couple of his trips. He was very organised and a great leader, taking me to very interesting places. He has a huge interest in our country and I think him sharing that with everyone would be a fantastic thing for him to do. He is a great person, has a wonderful sense of humour and is heaps of fun to be around. I wish him all the best in his business venture.

Frequently asked questions, how do i book this tour.

You can book online in your own time by locating your desired tour, and following the booking prompts. However, if you do not feel confident, or do not want to book this way, please simply call our office on – 03 5941 8800 – and we will happily take your booking for our tours for seniors and other extended Australia tours.

Do you pick me up from home?

Yes! If you are travelling with us on a tour of 3 nights or more, and live within the Melbourne Metro, Mornington Peninsula, or Gippsland regions, then your holiday starts from your front door – as we come and pick you up!

We will be in touch about 2 weeks prior to our tour departure to let you know of your pickup time.

See above for who is eligible…

Not to worry – this happens quite a bit, and there are still plenty of ways to get you on board. Sometimes, we ask that you pay a little extra, and we are therefore able to come pick you up from home (like a Taxi service). Sometimes, we will ask you to meet us at a central location (hotel, airport, train station). Or, you are of course welcome to drive to our depot and leave your car in our secure lot and depart with us from there. We will discuss these options with you, to find one that best suits you!

Do you cater for dietary requirements?

We do our best to cater for all dietary requirements – please let us know of these at the time of booking.

How fit do I need to be for your tours?

The great thing about our tours is that there is something for everyone! Our days are engaging and interactive, without being overbearing and tiresome. We understand that you want to get your moneys worth, but at the same time, also want some time for yourself and to be able to put your feet up and simply relax.

All we ask is that you are able to safely board and disembark our coach (4 steps) without need of assistance. If you can do that, you are fit enough for our tours!

I am a single traveller wanting to share a room?

This is fine – and happens quite often! When booking online (or with us over the phone) simply select “Single looking to share”, and that way we can keep an eye out for a like-minded travelling companion for you in the same situation. We will always OK this with both parties before we finaslise this, and normally suggest that you catch up for a phone call/coffee first.

Please be aware, until a sharing partner is found, you will be booked on at the Single Travellers price – as no guarantee is made by us that we will find you a sharing partner.

Do you do seat rotations on board the bus?

More or less yes. We believe that every seat on board is a comfy one, offering you amazing views as we cruise past. In saying that though, we do not allow anyone to “reserve” a seat for the duration of the entire tour – and where needed/wanted, we will ensure that everyone gets a chance to sit in the more desired seats.

What is my luggage limit?

What if the tour is cancelled due to covid .

Naturally, we have all had to adjust to life under Covid, and the one  main thing we’ve all learned from it is to be flexible. It’s hard to give a straight answer in terms of lockdowns, quarantines, boarder restrictions etc. just know that our number one priority is your safety – and regardless of what happens, we won’t leave you standard, and we’ll do whatever we can to ensure you get the holiday you deserve!

Do I need Travel Insurance to tour with you?

No – for our domestic Australia tours, this is not needed. However, WE HIGHLY RECOMEND IT! We recommend that from the moment you book and pay your deposit, you take our travel insurance, as this covers you in case of early cancellation. If you are looking for a good person to speak to in regards to travel insurance, a local company that we have used both professionally and personally is Triple T Insurance. You can call Daniel there on – 0403 352 314 – to obtain a quote.

Are the Atherton Tablelands in Queensland, Australia worth visiting?

James Boettcher, founder of FNQ Nature Tours, gives you the best tips to enjoy your Atherton Tablelands trip. Photo / FNQ Nature Tours 1

FNQ Nature Tours offers small group tours across the Daintree National Park, Atherton Tablelands and beyond. Here James Boettcher, the company’s founder, shares his top tips for making the most of Atherton Tablelands.

Inspired by the rich natural beauty of Australia , I began guiding multi-day safari tours when I was 21 years old. More recently, I established FNQ Nature Tours in 2016. It was the beginning of a dream, creating unforgettable and life-changing connections with the natural world and inspiring the preservation and support of native flora and fauna through responsible eco-tourism.

Read more: Australia’s ultimate travel guide: Unmissable spots in every Australian state

I now manage a team of three incredible naturist guides , who use their local knowledge to tailor some of the most exciting wildlife encounters available in our region. As a young company with a motivated team, we are highly focused on influencing how people travel. Along with our partners in the Australian Wildlife Journeys Collective, I am confident our range of touring products will continue to benefit the region’s ecology.

Why visit the Atherton Tablelands

The Atherton Tablelands is a rainforest hinterland that blankets the mountains west of Cairns, a region encompassing a stark contrast of experiences. The Tablelands offer an abundance of wilderness, wildlife and culture, along with locally farmed/grown food and wine.

The Atherton Tablelands are easily my personal favourite region of the Wet Tropics. A convenient 60-minute drive from Cairns, there is something for everyone, from vast crater lakes to incredible forest giants, endemic wildlife around every corner and waterfalls galore. Heading up into the mountains to the west away from the coast, you immediately feel you’ve stumbled onto a secret.

Best things to see and do

You haven’t experienced the Atherton Tablelands until you’ve sat on the lakeside timber deck of the Lake Barrine Tea House enjoying fresh, warm, locally made tea and scones. The nearby Rainforest Walk only serves to complement the Tea House, with ancient rainforest trees up to 1000 years old. Keep an eye out for Victoria’s Riflebird of Paradise, too.

For lunch, I would pop into the Malanda Collective Café, located in the Malanda township. This cute boutique family business offers a beautiful selection of homemade produce, very well catered to those who like to “do it like the locals do”. Customers are often welcomed by owner Lucia, who will go above and beyond to ensure your comfort. The coffee is excellent, and you’ll be surrounded by local knick-knacks. Checkout the wildlife calendars by local wildlife photographer Matt Cornish, a dead giveaway that wild tree kangaroos can be spotted on the nearby walking trails.

Meet the country's national animal hanging out on a Lumholtz tree. Photo / FNQ Nature Tours 1

Seeing the region’s endemic wildlife is always a big highlight of any trip to Atherton Tablelands. The one that sticks out the most for me would be spotting a platypus in the wild. If you’re not choosing a guided tour, you should. But if not, visitors can try their luck at Peterson Creek in Yungaburra.

Another “must do” I would highlight for an Atherton Tablelands day out would be the Curtin Fig Tree. Only a five-minute drive from the historic town of Yungaburra, it’s an explosion of nature with an intricate life story. Photographers, bring your wide-angle lens.

If you want to experience the region’s delicious local produce, is a short drive from the infamous Millaa Millaa Falls. The only Biodynamic Farmhouse Cheesery and Café in North Queensland. All the products are made on site and with a backdrop of Queensland’s highest peak, it’s hard to pass up.

Nature photographers should add the Curtain Fig Tree to their dream photo destinations. Photo / TTNQ 2

Where to stay

When it comes to local accommodation, there are plenty of holiday cottages, rainforest lodges and boutique motels to choose from on the Atherton Tablelands.

My wife and I eloped at The Canopy Rainforest Treehouses & Wildlife Sanctuary near the town of Tarzali, just a 10-minute drive from Malanda. You might be greeted by Dan, the warm and humble caretaker. Dan has a customer service standard like no other, and the lodges have both resident cassowaries and tree kangaroos.

I can highly recommend Chambers Wildlife Lodge near Lake Eacham for wildlife enthusiasts. You’ll see catbirds and pademelons from your balcony. See Meg at Eden House Retreat or Gina at Blue Summit Lodge in Yungaburra for super clean and tiny lodges, central to all the Tableland action.

Top tips for visiting

  • Not all walks within the national parks have rubbish collection. Plan to take your rubbish with you on your visit, or take it into one of the nearby towns such as Atherton, Malanda or Yungaburra.
  • Being so close to Cairns, some of the Tablelands’ highlights can be done in half a day, such as Yungaburra and Lake Barrine. This could be combined with a flight in or out of Cairns.
  • The beautiful and well-known Lake Barrine Tea House was once the sight of a convalescent camp during World War II. In 1943 the guesthouse at Lake Barrine was taken over by a detachment of the 2/1 Australian Army Convalescent Depot. Jump on one of the lake cruises operated by Steve Curry, third-generation owner of the Tea House and hear about the family history.
  • Easily the most underrated place to visit on the Atherton Tablelands is the Tolga Bat Hospital. Located 10 minutes from Atherton, this incredible bat hospital is run by Jenny Mclean.
  • The Tablelands area is very family-friendly, with short driving times, engaging nature, huge open playgrounds and kid-friendly restaurants. You can go nocturnal kayaking in Lake Tinaroo with Uncle Brian’s Tours, and explore the European history at Herberton Historic Village or one of many botanical walks. Malanda Falls is another close waterfall for families with nearby food and facilities.

Snapper Rocks returns to World Surf League championship tour in 2025 schedule shake-up

A fter five years in the surfing wilderness, Queensland's famous break Snapper Rocks is back on the World Surf League (WSL) championship tour.

The event will return to Coolangatta from 2025 after the WSL inked a four-year deal with the City of Gold Coast and Tourism and Events Queensland.

Snapper Rocks was the season opener for the elite surfing tour for two decades until the event was axed in a major shake-up to the schedule during the COVID pandemic.

The WSL took a break from competition during the first year of the pandemic and when it returned in 2021, the Gold Coast lost its hosting rights because of a dispute between the Queensland government and WSL over COVID restrictions.

The Queensland leg of the tour was moved to New South Wales.

For the past three years Snapper Rocks has instead hosted the opening event of the WSL's second-tier competition, the Challenger Series, as part of a revamped format for professional surfing.

The championship tour contest was an important part of the social fabric and surf culture of Coolangatta — a region that has produced more world champions than anywhere in the world.

Widespread impact

Three-time world champ and two-time winner at Snapper Rocks, Mick Fanning, said losing the event had been a heartbreaking blow to the community.

"To not have it here was so sad, not only for us surfers who want people [to] surf our waves, but also for the kids growing up seeing what the benchmark is and what is actually possible at their home break," he said.

Fanning welcomed its return.

"It's an event that's obviously close to my heart," he said.

"There is so much history that has gone on even before I was on tour.

"It's not just for Gold Coast kids, it's for everywhere — far north New South Wales, up the Sunny Coast — people would travel from all over."

Major attraction

Tourism and Events Queensland predicted the event's return to the Gold Coast would attract 14,000 fans and inject $2.9 million into the local economy.

The WSL is yet to reveal the 2025 schedule and whether Snapper's addition means another location is on the chopping block.

The 2024 Australian leg includes stops at Bells Beach in March and Margaret River April.

According to Experience Gold Coast, the city's peak tourism body, Snapper Rocks will be the third stop on the tour's 2025 Australian leg after events in Victoria and Western Australia.

It is likely the Gold Coast will the final event before the mid-season cut, or the first event after the cut.

Fanning said the WSL had made the right call.

"You have got to make sure the premier waves, the premier locations are on the world tour because that's where you want to see the best surfing done," he said.

"If that's the last event for the cut then that's incredible.

"It's a lot more predictable than Margaret River.

"You can let your surfing do the talking at Snapper, it's always fairly consistent there are not big changes throughout the day."

The WSL event at Snapper Rocks is one of the biggest event's on the Gold Coast sporting calendar. (Supplied: WSL)
