1927: Next Generation at the Palms

1927 tour cancelled

16 June 2023 – Crown Casino, Melbourne – review by Harry Leithhead – photo by Nino Lo Giudice *

Classic Aussie rockers ‘1927’ brought their ‘Next Generation’ tour to Palms at Crown in Melbourne last night. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances not publicly known, the remainder of the tour has been cancelled, with Palms and one other show being the only gigs they’ve continued with. Luckily, for my Dad (a huge fan of their debut album ‘…ish’) and I, we got to catch an energetic show by an 80’s rock band that still sound excellent live.

Jason Singh, former Taxiride frontman, opened with an acoustic set. A great singer, and a great entertainer, he warmed the crowd up and finished on a high with signature Taxiride song ‘Creepin Up Slowly’.

1927 came out in great form. They’re best known for their 1988 debut ‘…ish’, and this show played out as a bit of a greatest hits gig, with most songs of the setlist coming from this album. However, there were also a few songs from their 2013 album ‘Generation-i’ that fit nicely with the big hits and are performed with real passion. They have a classic 80’s pub rock sound, although with a touch more keys/synth than other classic Aussies like Cold Chisel, Midnight Oil or The Angels. Original frontman Eric Weideman (and only original member) leads the show. His voice is in strong shape, and he doesn’t spend much time chatting inbetween, acknowledging that we aren’t here to listen to him talk. He is also quite a humble performer with a good sense of humour, as when somebody in the audience calls out ‘you’re the best Eric!’ he simply replies with ‘thanks, but nah… I know someone better’.

The rest of the band all play tightly together. The drums had a classic 80’s sound; tight, sharp punchy tom fills and plenty of dramatic, cymbal-wash finales. The lead guitar sounded incredible – razor-sharp with plenty of wild solos from the era of excess in rock. It also sounded the best in the live mix (perhaps because we were seated directly in-line with the amp), taking the cake for both Dad and I.

The biggest hits were saved for the end of the night, with ‘Compulsory Hero’ and ‘That’s When I Think of You’ getting the loudest cheers and forcing everyone to their feet, before finishing with ‘If I Could’, which had all of us singing along together – a timeless ballad that tops off the night.

My Dad is a huge fan of ‘…ish’, so it was a great opportunity to take him to this show. He inspired a large part of my music taste, raising me on classic Aussie rock staples, along with the essentials such as Elvis, Springsteen & Bon Jovi. It’s always been the two of us going to the stadium shows together (most recently Guns ‘N’ Roses at the MCG), so to add another classic band to the list was amazing, even if I was the youngest one in the crowd by a decent go!

Live reviews.

I have always been a fan of 1927 so when their concert was announced at Palms in Crown Casino Melbourne ( which we frequent) we decided to attend. They were excellent and to hear the Ish album in its entirety was amazing. Loved the show but..

They didn't sell out so there were a number of empty seats. Support needs to be better and their show only went 70 minutes. This was a huge let down. Better support and a longer show would have been great.

If you see them advertised with a good support band I highly recommend seeing them. Music and vocals were spot on.

First time I saw 1927 was way back in 1990 when they came to my hometown, Ararat.

This time around we are all a wee bit older but like a fine wine 1927 have only become better with time. I had a great night. My husband who had never seen them live before, had a fantastic time also.

Hope that they come to Melbourne again real soon. Keep rocking guys!!!

Brilliant show. Eric Weideman's voice hasn't changed. 1927 put on a terrific show which took me back 25 years. Would definitely see them again - hopefully with Pseudo Echo on the same ticket as this occasion.

Second round of Invited Celebrity Classic canceled due to inclement weather

Change Text Size

The second round of the Invited Celebrity Classic has been canceled due to inclement weather around Las Colinas Country Club in Irving, Texas.

"Due to the current weather conditions and forecast throughout the greater Dallas-Forth Worth area, competition at the Invited Celebrity Classic presented by Choctaw Casinos & Resorts will be canceled for Saturday, April 20," a statement released by PGA TOUR Champions announced. "Round 2 will be played on Sunday, April 21 and will utilize the same tee times. As a result of today's cancellation, this event will now be contested as a 36-hole competition. There will be no formal cut."

This marks the second time this season that a PGA TOUR Champions event will be official after 36 holes of competition. Stephen Ames was declared the winner of the The Chubb Classic presented by SERVPRO after 36 holes of competition earlier this season as weather caused Sunday's final round to be canceled.

Thomas Bjørn holds the 18-hole lead at 7-under with a pack of four golfers one stroke behind him at 6-under. Bjørn, who has never won on PGA TOUR Champions, finished runner-up at the Trophy Hassan II in February, his only other start this season.

Ellen DeGeneres Returns to Stand-Up, Talks Being Canceled in First L.A. Show

Ellen DeGeneres is back on tour with her stand-up comedy routine!

The former talk show host is getting back to her roots, years after closing out her run on television.

Ellen performed to a sold-out crowd at the Largo at the Coronet Theater in Los Angeles on Wednesday night (April 24), the first of seven shows at the venue across the next six weeks.

During the show, Ellen addressed how she was canceled at the end of her talk show run and got “kicked out of show business.”

Keep reading to find out more…

“I used to say that I didn’t care what other people thought of me and I realized…I said that at the height of my popularity,” Ellen said (via Rolling Stone ). “It is such a waste of time to worry about what other people think…Right now I’m hoping you’re thinking, ‘This is marvelous, I’m so happy to be here.’ But you could be thinking, ‘Let’s see how this goes.’”

Ellen told the crowd, “What else can I tell you?… Oh yeah, I got kicked out of show business. There’s no mean people in show business.”

“The ‘be kind’ girl wasn’t kind,” she added. “I became this one-dimensional character who gave stuff away and danced up steps. Do you know how hard it is to dance up steps? Would a mean person dance up steps? Had I ended my show by saying, ‘Go f–k yourself,’ people would’ve been pleasantly surprised.”

Check out Ellen ‘s tour dates on her website !

Kid Cudi Cancels Tour After Breaking Foot at Coachella: ‘Injury Is Much More Serious Than I Thought’

  • By Althea Legaspi

Althea Legaspi

Kid Cudi has been forced to cancel his tour after breaking his foot at Coachella over the weekend. During the fest’s Weekend Two on Sunday night, the rapper went to the hospital with a broken foot after jumping off the stage at the Sahara Tent.

But it seems the injury was more serious than he initially thought, and on Wednesday, the rapper announced that he must now undergo surgery. “I have a broken calcaneus,” the rapper posted on social media . “I’m headed to surgery now and there’s gonna be a long recovery time. We have to cancel the tour so I can focus on getting better to be out there in top shape to rage with you all.”

He added that he would not be able to give 100 percent during his performance due to the recovery time. “The injury is much more serious than I thought.” Ticketholders will get refunded, per his post.

Kid Cudi has officially canceled his upcoming Insano world tour after breaking his ankle during his Coachella set on Sunday (April 21).

The rapper revealed the news of the tour cancelation on X (formerly Twitter) today, stating that the injury requires a recovery period that interferes with the tour dates. All tickets will be refunded and the tour will be rescheduled for a later time.

Cudi last appeared at Coachella in 2019, when he performed cuts from “Kids See Ghosts” alongside his collaborative album partner Kanye West. The 43-date Insano world tour was scheduled to kick off on July 28 in Austin, Texas, and featured support from Pusha T, Jaden and Earthgang.
