Back in the day, your vehicle’s throttle body had a wire that connected to the pedal. When you pushed the pedal, you opened the throttle body, and you increased the amount of air that enters your engine. But as technologies have advanced, physical linkages have been replaced with sensors and actuators.

While this system allows for better air to fuel ratios for better fuel economy and engine performance, the tradeoff is that if a sensor or actuator breaks, you lose control of your throttle. That’s why vehicle manufacturers packed their vehicles full of sensors and an entire system to monitor your electronic throttle control.

But what does it mean when your throttle control light comes on, and what should you do? More importantly, is it safe to drive your vehicle, or do you need to take it straight to a repair shop? We’ll answer all those questions and more here.

What Does The Electronic Throttle Control Light (ETC) Mean?

The electronic throttle control (ETC) light indicates that there is an issue with the throttle system. The throttle system includes the throttle body, accelerator pedal, and wirings. The electronic throttle control system controls and monitors the position of the throttle.

While older vehicles use a cable that’s linked directly to the throttle body , most modern cars accomplish this feat through sensors and your vehicle’s ECM.

While there are plenty of advantages to this, if everything isn’t working the way it should, then you’re not going to accelerate the way you should.

The only other time you should see the electronic throttle control light is when you turn on your vehicle. At this point, your vehicle is completing a system check, and when everything checks out, the light should turn off. However, if the light stays on, you have an underlying problem that you need to address.

The easiest way to narrow down where you need to look is to hook up an OBD2 reader. While these tools can’t tell you with 100 percent certainty what the problem is, they can give you a good place to start your search.

What Causes An Electronic Throttle Control Light To Come On?

The most common causes of an electronic throttle control light are a faulty throttle control sensor or a faulty throttle accelerator pedal position sensor. But while those are the most common causes of an electronic throttle light, they aren’t the only things that could be going on.

We’ve taken a deep dive into the three most common problems below.

1. Faulty Throttle Control Sensor

Just because your vehicle’s ECM tells the throttle to open a specific amount doesn’t mean that the ECM trusts that it will. It actually relies on the throttle control sensor to tell it how far the throttle has actually opened and makes fuel-to-air ratio adjustments based on that.

As every good mechanic knows, you need to trust but verify. This is exactly what your ECM is doing by listening to the throttle control sensor. So, when everything doesn’t come back the way it expects, it throws an electronic throttle control light so you can check out what’s going on.

In some throttle bodies, the sensor is not replaceable and you may have to replace the whole throttle body, which can be quite costly.

2. Faulty Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor

There are a few different parts to your electronic throttle control system, and an integral one is the accelerator pedal position sensor . This sensor communicates with your vehicle’s ECM to let it know how fast you want to go.

From there, the ECM tells the throttle how much to open or close. But if the ECM can’t get an accurate reading from the pedal due to a faulty sensor, you’ll never get the acceleration you want. If the computer recognizes that something is wrong with the sensor, you’ll get an electronic throttle control light.

3. Stuck Throttle Body

It doesn’t matter if everything on the electric side of the house is working correctly if the physical throttle body is stuck. There are plenty of reasons that the throttle body can get stuck, but a common one is carbon build-up.

Take a look at your throttle body and ensure that it can easily open and close. If it can’t, see if you can remove any obstructions and try cleaning it with a high-quality carb cleaner. If that still doesn’t work, you might need to replace the throttle body.

Is It Safe To Drive With an Electronic Throttle Control Light?

It is not safe to drive with an electronic throttle control light. While you might be lucky and only have a drop in fuel efficiency or a slight drop in acceleration, the problem can quickly get worse if the sensor readings continue to go awry.

The throttle body controls how much air enters the engine, and if your vehicle’s ECM can’t keep accurate tabs on this, then it can quickly lead to an out-of-control engine. If you have an electronic throttle light that’s on, you can quickly damage your engine, which can lead to even more expensive repairs when you get it to a repair shop.

The accelerator pedal, commonly called the ‘gas pedal’, controls the throttle. In turn, this sits in the aptly-named electronic throttle body (ETB).

The throttle – so named because it controls the airflow – is a butterfly valve . In very basic terms, it’s a disc-shaped piece of metal hinged across its central line.

The more it rotates, the more air passes it. As more oxygen enters the engine, the ECM sends more fuel to the cylinders. The result is more powerful combustion, increasing your car’s output.

You’ll know (well, you should!) that pressing the accelerator pedal means you speed up. Lifting off means you slow down.

This doesn’t happen by magic! Inside the throttle body, the butterfly valve pivots. The more you push the pedal, the wider open it turns, allowing more air into the cylinders.

But how is your gas pedal linked to the throttle body? That’s where the electronic throttle control comes in.

What Is The Electronic Throttle Control?

The electronic throttle control connects your gas pedal to the butterfly valve in the throttle body .

In the past, cars, trucks, motorcycles, and anything with an internal combustion engine, had a throttle cable or linkage (a physical component ‘linking’ the two). All cars before the late 1980s come with these setups.

This direct mechanical connection means the butterfly valve responds directly to your foot.

You can still see the mechanical throttle cables or linkages on old vehicles and many two-stroke engines, such as those on motorcycles, mopeds, ATVs, etc.

However, these days, mechanical components are being phased out in favor of sensors and electrical circuitry.

The electronic throttle control is a network of sensors and computers connecting your gas pedal to the throttle body.

A sensor measures the position of the pedal. This information is relayed through the ETC system in the ECU. In turn, the car’s computer sends information to the electronic motor powering the butterfly valve.

When it was first introduced in the late 80s, the electronic throttle control had its own module.  These days, the ETC is usually integrated as part of the overall ECM (Engine Control Module) .

Sensors Contributing To The Electronic Throttle Control

The ETC system compiles data from several sensors. In its simplest form, it requires just the following two:

  • Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) , measuring the position of the butterfly valve.
  • Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor (APS) , reading the position of the gas pedal.

However, contemporary cars are much more intricate than this. For instance, the pace at which the butterfly valve responds to the modifications in pedal position can be modified. This is utilized in diverse drive modes, such as Eco or Snow.

Many other systems are hugely dependent on the ETC and its processes. These include cruise control, stability control, traction control, idle air control, links with the Transmission Control Module , and so on.

Thus, there are technically hundreds of sensors playing a part in how the ETC reacts.

What Does The ETC Light Mean?

At a fundamental level, the ETC warning light means the system has a problem.

Something has gone wrong. Taking your car to a shop and having them read the OBD II codes should reveal the root cause.

The butterfly valve can clog up over time. This blocks off the air that should be flowing past it. It may even be so severely jammed that the motor can’t open it at all!

The butterfly throttle valve is still part of the ETC system. That’s why you might be seeing the electronic throttle control warning light.

Remove the throttle body from the car. (If you don’t know what a throttle body is, get some reliable help!)

Use brake cleaner (or a similar substance) to spray the plate, removing any dirt, debris, or soot.

Put it back on the car, don’t forget to connect all the bolts and plug it in again.

Has that fixed your problem? I encountered this situation myself a few years ago, and it worked for me.

A bottle of brake cleaner should be less than $10. You can get it from any hardware store.

The valve inside the electronic throttle body is powered by a motor.

Obviously, if this motor fails, it can’t rotate and will remain in an almost-closed position.

Because the throttle position sensor (TPS) data doesn’t correspond to the accelerator pedal position sensor readings, the ETC light comes on.

When faced with this issue, it’s time for a new electronic throttle body.

The part might cost about $250, with another $80 for labor.

The TPS is a sort of verification device. It checks that the butterfly valve behaves as the ECM tells it to.

If it stops working, the ETC will detect a discrepancy between it and the rest of the system. As a result, the warning light illuminates.

Let’s hope it doesn’t come down to this. It’s rare but possible.

The ECU is a broad term for your car’s electrical ‘brain’. It comprises tens (if not hundreds) of individual modules, each comparing data from many more sensors.

The ETC typically forms a portion of the ECM, the Engine Control Module. It is in charge of examining the data received from different sensors and transforming it into directions for the butterfly valve engine.

On occasion, things can go wrong with these computers. These are usually down to either damage or tampering. Manufacturer error (in which case there should be a recall) is also a possibility.

You either need reprogramming or a new module. Either way, you’ll need expert help from auto electricians.

Reprogramming or a replacement module will be in excess of $600 – possibly over $1,000.

Can You Drive When The ETC Light Is On?

You shouldn’t – it’s a bad idea.

If your car completely loses its connection between the pedal and the throttle, you’ll suddenly have no control over the engine.

This makes it a perilous situation, as improbable as it is.

On top of this, the air-fuel ratio won’t function as it should. This often leads to internal dirt and damage, causing further (expensive) issues.

Try cleaning the throttle body plate, as I mentioned above. In some cases, this might fix the issue.

Otherwise, you could either go to a mechanic (which I recommend!) or order the parts to your home. If you know your way around cars, you can probably replace them yourself.

Always take extra care when working with electronics. Remember to disconnect the car’s 12-Volt battery!

Failing that, you could always ask a knowledgeable friend for some help!

Stay safe out there, and if your ETC light comes on while driving, it’s best to pull over and get help!

I purchased my 2013 Dodge Journey in July of 2013. Since then I have had check engine lights coming on 6 times. First time was only a couple months after I purchased it and less than 1500 miles and then 2-3 other times during the next months. Dealership that i purchased the vehicle from has replaced sensors, replaced main computer board that the errors are sent to.

After speaking with other dodge owners decided to take to another dealership. Very friendly and said that the problem is the computer needed an update and that was why I was getting the check engine light messages. Since I have been taking it to them have not had anymore problems until yesterday 10/21/14. When I leave work and start car the check engine light, electronic throttle control and electronic stability control off lights come on. Car is not running right. Try to drive and it is hesitate when i press the gas petal. After shutting car off and back on several times car starts running better and only the check engine light is on. Stop several places before I head home and when I start the car on the way home the check engine light is off and was still off when I come to work this morning.

One thing I have noticed when all 3 lights come....It has been cold on the morning 7-8 am drive to work 30-40 degrees, I don't drive again until on my way home which is 5 pm and temperature has warmed up to around 75 degrees.

I am once again calling dealership to take car in to get looked at but I am very frustrated.

My 2013 Journey SE Plus has started experiencing this exact same problem. It started over the last few weeks as a small power loss for a second or so while accelerating every once in a while. It has been good for the last week or so and starting last night things got worse.

Now most of the time while accelerating once the engine RPMs are between 2K and 3K the RPMs will suddenly drop to around 2K, the engine will start surging, the ETC and Trac lights will come on and Trac light won't turn off until I shut the vehicle off. The ETC light will go away once the RPMs come back up.

I have read online about others having a similar issue and the Electronic Thottle body needed to be replaced. Right now I have 92K on it and does anyone know if this were to be the issue would it be covered under the powertrain warranty? I haven't called the dealership yet because it is Sunday and they are not open.

The other thing I forgot to mention is that over the last few weeks during the really cold mornings when I use the engine block heater the engine will idle very low (around 500K) and very rough for about 30 seconds, then the RPMs will come up and everything will smooth out.

Is the check engine light on?

Unfortunately no, it never did come on and my scanner didn't bring up any error codes either.

Just an update... I took the Journey to the dealership and there were codes stored in the computer indicating that the computer was limiting engine RPM's because the Electronic Throttle Body was sticking.

They replaced the Throttle Body and the problem has been resolved.

Just an update... I took the Journey to the dealership and there were codes stored in the computer indicating that the computer was limiting engine RPM's because the Electronic Throttle Body was sticking. They replaced the Throttle Body and the problem has been resolved.

It has been a while since I was on this forum.  Unfortunately I don't recall exactly how much it was.  I remember at that time the part was under $500 and the dealership covered the labour under their "Good Will" warranty.  I am not sure exactly how that works so it may not apply to everyone.

I purchased my 2014 Dodge Journey 3 yrs ago, this October, with 90,000 miles on it. I had to have the electronic throttle control replaced and computer reprogram, which was covered under warranty in January of 2019. This failed again in June 2020 and the dealership graciously replaced it, stating a "PART" issue. There was approx 20,000 miles on it since initial repair. they replaced the part and reprogrammed computer (supposedly) again. Now, on July 26, 2021 it has happened AGAIN!! same indicator lights same sluggish vehicle. I took it to dealership and they stated same thing again was wrong - Electronic Throttle Control. There was only 11,000 miles from a year ago when they replaced it. They stated they can replace it and reprogram but I MUST FOOT THE BILL...is this not an issue they should take care of or a recall be done on? How can 3 of these go bad within 141,000 miles on a car?  Any advice or direction I can go? They have reset the codes but now car barely runs until they can "fix" it and I pay??

i have always been told when a part is installed at the dealership 12 months /12 k warranty, but if it has yo be replaced again the warranty stays from when the first part was installed,,,, might want to go directly to corporate use the Ph # back of your manual or get it from the dealership.be nice and keep all your info organised and safe, good luck

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church.
