This 'Sopranos' Tour Takes Fans to Iconic Sites From the Series and New Film — Complete With Tony's Favorite NJ Eats

The four-hour tour includes stops at Father Phil's Parish, Searchlight Diner, and Holsten's ice cream shop.

on location tours sopranos

Now that The Sopranos is back with the release of prequel "The Many Saints of Newark," the sites from the original series have taken on more meaning — and On Location Tours is taking fans from New York City to all the most crucial spots in New Jersey, ending in the most spectacular fashion.

Although the tour has been running for 20 years, it's constantly being updated, and now new stops from the prequel are being added in Newark.

The tour starts in Manhattan near 7th Avenue and 39th Street. It follows Tony Soprano's familiar drive in the opening credits out of the city, where he heads out of the Lincoln Tunnel, the view of the Manhattan skyline behind him. Other iconic sites along the way are The Muffler Man, Pizza Land, and the Valley Landscape silo. Also along the drive is the Pulaski Skyway ramp that's seen at the end of each episode.

Then there are stops at some of the most recognizable locations, like Tony's business at Barone Sanitation, the Skyway Diner (where you can sit on the steps where Christopher was shot), Big Pussy's auto body shop, and Satin Dolls (also called Bada Bing). Also on the itinerary are visits to Father Phil's Parish, Satriale's Pork Store, Party Box, Searchlight Diner, and St. Cecilia's Church.

The highlight is a stop at Holsten's , the ice cream shop in Bloomfield, where guests can sit in booth B-3 , just like Tony did with his family in the very last scene of the series — and enjoy the onion rings he called the "best in the state."

The tours are led by local actors — including Marc, the lead guide on this tour who has appeared as a stand-in and extra on the series — who reveal behind-the-scenes secrets and challenge the guests to trivia along the way.

The Sopranos Tour is offered either as a public tour starting at $72 per person, or as a private tour with a three-person minimum for $160 per person. A limo buyout option is also available for up to five people for $740 total. On Location Tours offers the excursion daily and guests must be at least 18 years old.

For those looking to rub shoulders with the fictional mobsters, Joseph Gannascoli, who played Vito, has been known to surprise visitors at the start of the tour.

Film series

Full description, from manhattan to “sopranoland”.

The Sopranos Sites Tour is based on the popular television show created by David Chase for HBO. The Sopranos stars James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano , a New Jersey mafia boss. The television show’s many successful seasons revolve around Tony Sopranos difficulties as he tries to balance his family life and running his criminal organization.

The show gave a bird’s eye view into mob life and allowed viewers to see the inner workings of this New Jersey crime family. Season 1 and half of Season 2 were focused on Tony’s relationship with his mother Livia , played by Nancy Marchand .

Ms. Marchand passed away halfway through Season 2’s filming, which was eventually written into the story line. From that point on, Tony’s wife, Carmella (played by Edie Falco), his daughter Meadow (played by Jamie Lynn Siegler), along with his son AJ (played by Robert Iler) vie for Tony’s attention in between the dirty deals and beat downs that take place on a daily basis in this mob boss’ life.

The tour begins in New York and starts out with sites from the opening credits, including the exit of the Lincoln Tunnel and the famous Manhattan skyline . As you arrive in Jersey, you’ll see more sites from the credits like The Muffler Man, Pizza Land, the Valley Landscape silo, a featured Tudor house, a building in the center of the Meadowlands that Tony often passes, and the ramp to the Pulaski Skyway seen at the end of every episode.

Skyway Diner

The tour then hits some of the most recognizable places from The Sopranos: Barone Sanitation (Tony’s business), the Skyway Diner (where Christopher gets shot), Big Pussy’s auto body shop , and Satin Dolls , also known as the Bada Bing.

The tour visits major sites that were used in filming the show such as Cozzarelli’s, Party Box (now unoccupied) and Car Wash, Searchlight Diner and St. Cecila’s Church, all of which were locations for majors scenes in the show.

Get off the bus for a fun stop at Holsten’s (where the final scene of the last episode was shot) and enjoy complimentary onion rings just as you see Tony and his family indulging in in that final scene. Sit in “Tony’s” booth with your family for a nostalgic photo to share with friends.

Another major location for the television show, Satriale’s Pork Store , was a fictional establishment that was housed in an empty warehouse next to the Irish American Club in Kearny. The set was dismantled after the filming of the series concluded, and the building was torn down to make way for condominiums, which never happened!

More Sopranos filming locations include the back of Big Pussy’s house, the batting cages used by Pussy, AJ and Kevin, the Gold Driving Range where Tony takes his first Prozac, the marina where the Season 5 poster was photographed, Harrison High School where AJ vandalizes the pool, Seabra’s Rodizo, used as the Searchlight Diner where Pussy turns FBI informant, the statue of Christopher Columbus where the Sopranos get into a fight with the Native Americans, St. Cecilia’s (Carmela’s church), the funeral home used for Carmine’s wake, the Nuovo Vesuvio; and many, many more.

You Gotta Eat

Holsten’s Diner

During the tour, you’ll get the chance to eat at Holsten’s Diner . If you’d rather venture on your own after the tour, why not grab a bite to eat in the great Manhattan neighborhood of Little Italy, where the Soprano family often spent time on the show.

Just follow the red, white, and green parking meters along Mulberry Street (between Grand and Canal streets) and you will find more Italian eateries than you could ever hope to visit in a single trip, like Amici II, CafĂ© Roma, Casa Bella, Lombardi’s, Fratelli, Caffe Sorrento, Il Palazzo  and more.

In the late 1800’s an influx of Italian immigrants created a Little Italy that wasn’t so little. Now, it is a bit smaller, with only a few thousand Italian-Americans calling Little Italy their home. However, the neighborhood has never lost its charm.

Stop by Umberto’s Clam House , or Il Cortile to have a delicious lunch or dinner. Try La Mela for family style Italian or Grotta Azzura for upscale Italian. Skip dessert and grab some great cannoli over at Ferrara Bakery and CafĂ© . Or enjoy a glass of wine and tiramisu at one of the many outdoor cafĂ©s.

* In an effort to stay current, we are constantly updating our tours with new locations and cannot guarantee the presence of locations mentioned on our site. If you have a particular interest in locations from a specific TV show or movie, please let your tour guide know and we will do our best to accommodate your request.

Frequently Asked Questions about Sopranos Sites

Where does the tour meet.

The Sopranos Sites Tour meets in front of the Buttons Statue on 7th Avenue near 39th Street.

Where does the tour end?

The tour ends at 6th Avenue & West 42nd Street. You will be dropped off at the HBO Shop at 1100 6th Ave, New York, NY 10036.

Are we on the bus the whole tour?

No. You will get off the bus at a few locations along the way, giving you the opportunity to experience the locations and take pictures. Whenever you leave the bus, it is with the tour guide. The tour includes a mix of on-the-bus viewings of locations and stops to get off the bus to explore, all woven into the Sopranos story.

Is there an age limit on this tour?

Children under 18 years old, including babies, are unfortunately not allowed on the tour, as the content of the tour and several of its stops are not suitable for young children. Please also keep in mind that a couple of the stops on the tour – such as the Bada Bing – do have their own age minimums, and it is up to the discretion of these establishments whom to allow in.

What exact locations do we visit?

The exact itinerary and route of the tour varies somewhat from tour to tour, so we can't say ahead of time exactly which locations will be visited on a specific tour. There are usually 3-4 scheduled stops on each tour, but due to weather, traffic conditions, etc, tour routes may differ from tour to tour. The Bada Bing is a location that is almost always stops on the tour. **Please note that Tony's house on the TV show is not an included stop on the tour because: the house is located an hour away from the tour route. The house is located in a private residential neighborhood that does not allow buses.

Is there ever a circumstance when a location is omitted from the tour?

In extremely rare cases, certain locations may be skipped or modified that usually are part of the tour. Since the tour is visiting real-life locations around New Jersey, the tour's itinerary can sometimes be impacted by traffic conditions, store hours, etc. On Location Tours assumes no liability or responsibility for: traffic conditions, access to sites, or other conditions beyond its control.

Are food and drink included on the tour? Can I bring my own?

No food or drinks are served on the tour besides maybe a light snack, but you can feel free to bring something of your own if it is neat and you're sure to remove all garbage from the bus at the end of the tour. Alcohol is completely prohibited on the bus.

Can I bring beer, wine, etc on the bus?

No, it is against New York State law and New Jersey State law to consume alcohol on a bus.

Can I buy Sopranos merchandise on the tour?

Yes. You have the opportunity to purchase Sopranos merchandise at one of the scheduled stops on the tour.

I heard I get to meet one of the actors from the show on the tour. Is this true?

While the actor who plays Vito often makes appearances on the tour, this is subject to his availability. Due to his hectic and often unpredictable filming schedule, we never know until the day of the tour whether he will be able to make it. Cross your fingers!

Are the tours conducted in English only?

Yes, the Sopranos Tour is only conducted in English at this time. Since so much of the tour is visual, however, visitors from countries such as Japan, Germany, France, Spain and many others have enjoyed the tour just the same!

What type of bus is used?

The tour is conducted on a closed coach bus. It is heated in the winter and air conditioned in the summer.

Is there assigned seating on the bus?

Seating is first come, first serve. If you have a number of people in your party that want to sit together, you should make sure to arrive 15-20 minutes early. Guests that arrive late or right at the starting time are much more likely to have to split up their group.

Are the buses wheelchair accessible?

Yes, however you must contact On Location Tours directly at the number on your e-ticket at least 24 hours in advance of the tour to request a wheelchair-accessible vehicle. The wheelchair lifts can accommodate up to approximately 600lbs total; manual wheelchairs are recommended for this reason. Most buses are equipped with on-board restrooms. Buses are not equipped with lap or shoulder belts or harnesses. However, If you will be using a fold-up wheelchair and will be traveling with someone who can provide assistance on and off the bus, you do not need to inform them ahead of time as all of our buses have room in the luggage compartment to store it.

Are cameras allowed on the tour?

Yes. While photography and filming are not allowed on the bus portion of the tour, there are some great spots for taking photos and video at our numerous stops along the way.

Can I take luggage on the tour?

The Sopranos Tour is conducted on a coach bus, so limited storage space is available. Please keep in mind that there will be several stops of up to 15-20 minutes each where you will be leaving the bus. If you are not comfortable leaving your belongings on the bus during this time, you might want to reconsider bringing them.

Do we meet anyone famous at the tour?

At times, but very rarely, “Vito” (played by Joe Gannascoli) will make an appearance at the tour. He is normally not present at the tour because he is either doing acting work or autograph shows.

7 ‘Sopranos’ Locations to Visit in Honor of the 20th Anniversary (PHOTOS)

sopranos locations finale

Centanni’s Meat Market

Elizabeth, New Jersey

So it may not be the real Satriale’s — the filming location was knocked down in Kearny, New Jersey — but this real butcher shop served as the inspiration behind Tony’s (James Gandolfini) legitimate business. The sign is nearly identical to Satriale’s and serves up some prime cuts that would make any gangster giddy.

sopranos locations 2 finale

Holsten’s Ice Cream, Chocolate & Restaurant

Bloomfield, New Jersey

The iconic location of the show’s final moments, this little mom-and-pop operation actually exists in reality offering fans the opportunity to live the Soprano family’s (final?) moments. Even better? You can sit in Tony’s booth while you enjoy some creamy confections and a burger to boot.

sopranos locations 5 bada bing

Satin Dolls

Lido, New Jersey

If your wish is to party like Tony and the gang, Bada-Bing style, you can visit this New Jersey haunt which served as the filming location for the strip club. It may not have the same zip to its name but it likely offers the same thrills…

sopranos locations 3 averna club

Mulberry Street Bar

New York, New York

Serving as the interior for the Lupertazzi family headquarters — the Averna Social Club — the Mulberry Street Bar is located in the Little Italy neighborhood of Manhattan. The location was used multiple times throughout the series’ run and is open for business and fans today.

sopranos locations 4 silver cup

Silvercup Studios

Long Island City, New York

Most of the interior filming that took place on The Sorpanos was shot at the studio in Long Island City. In the Season 4 premiere, Johnny Sack’s (Vincent Curatola) call to Paulie (Tony Sirico) is actually filmed on the rooftop of the studio, which can be seen from the Queensboro bridge crossing from Manhattan into Queens.

sopranos locations 7 church

St. Patrick’s Church

Jersey City, New Jersey

The church was used on quite a few occasions throughout the series. In Season 4, Tony brought his son AJ for a little ride, parked outside the church, and proceeded to tell the young Soprano how his ancestors helped build the house of worship.

sopranos locations 6 marina

Nichols Great Kills Marina

Staten Island, New York

Tony’s yacht had to live somewhere, it just so happened that the location was Nichols Great Kills Marina. While no exact parking location is known, it is true that the mob boss’s boat was there somewhere, just be careful when visiting — you don’t want to swim with the fishes.

New Jersey Filming Locations from 'The Sopranos': A Driving Tour

Fans of the iconic HBO series can visit these real-life North Jersey haunts of Tony Soprano and crew.

By Zac Thompson

Updated January 29, 2024

The Sopranos debuted on HBO in January 1999. Six seasons, 21 Emmys, two and a half decades, one prequel movie, and one golden age of television later, David Chase's pioneering mob drama remains a leading contender for the title of TV's GOAT.

One measure of the show's GOATness: New generations continue to discover the series , finding fresh cultural and artistic relevance in the travails of mafia boss Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini), his family, and his other family—the fictional DiMeo criminal organization.

It's hard to think of another TV show from the class of '99 that has had anywhere near the same kind of impact, with the possible exception of SpongeBob SquarePants .

Whether you've recently begun streaming The Sopranos on Max or you watched the original run ending (and boy, what an ending) in 2007, you might be interested to know that many of the North Jersey locations that appeared onscreen can still be visited in real life (most interior scenes were shot at Silvercup Studios in New York City's Queens borough—sorry, that facility is not open for tours).

The Sopranos Location Guide online lists more than 500 spots in New Jersey , New York, and elsewhere that were featured on the show; go to that site if you need an exhaustive list.

Otherwise, hop in the car and follow along on this driving tour of iconic filming locations from The Sopranos in North Jersey. A map of featured destinations is embedded at the bottom of this post.

Warning: mild spoilers ahead

First,  here's an Apple Music playlist for the ride, compiled by HBO. Yes, of course the first track is Alabama 3's "Woke Up This Morning."

If you really want to set the right mood, redo Tony's drive from Manhattan to his house via the New Jersey Turnpike in the show's opening credits.

The Sopranos Location Guide has detailed driving directions  starting from the Lincoln Tunnel in New York , with screenshots of crucial sights to watch out for, such as Jersey City's carpet-clutching Paul Bunyanesque statue ( at  220 Broadway, now home to a marijuana dispensary ) and the Pizza Land restaurant in North Arlington ( 260 Belleville Turnpike ).

You'll wind up at the Soprano family's house, 14 Aspen Drive in North Caldwell .

on location tours sopranos

The front of the 5,600-square-foot home used as the residence for Tony, wife Carmella (Edie Falco), and their kids Meadow (Jamie-Lynn Sigler) and A.J. (Robert Iler) can easily be spotted from the road. There really is a pool out back, too; we can't confirm the presence of ducks. Although indoor scenes were filmed on a set, the design was a meticulous re-creation of the home's real-life interiors.

Because the place is privately owned, you can't go inside and poke around—unless, of course, you buy the house, which went on the market in 2019 for $3.4 million. (As of December 2023, it was still "unclear whether a sale went through," according to NorthJersey.com ).

Since this is a private neighborhood, be respectful when visiting—though current owners Patti and Victor Recchia are pretty good sports.

Describing photo-seeking tourists for the New York Times , Victor said, “They’ll pull up in like a limo or something, get out in a robe, and pick up a newspaper."

About a 15-minute drive southwest to Bloomfield will take you from the show's opening credits to its unforgettable final moments.

on location tours sopranos

Opened in 1939, Holsten's ( 1063 Broad St. ) is an old-fashioned ice cream parlor that served as setting for the last scene of the series, in which the Soprano family munches onion rings before an abrupt cut to black that made us all think our TVs had gone on the fritz. The establishment also appears in the prequel film, The Many Saints of Newark .

You can sit in Tony's booth, but please spare the waitstaff another rendition of "Don't Stop Believin'."

From Bloomfield, take the Garden State Parkway northeast to meet Route 17, then go south to where that road meets Interstate 80 near Lodi to find Satin Dolls ( 230 Route 17 South ), the strip club that stood in for the Bada Bing! on The Sopranos .

DiMeo associates are frequently depicted conducting business at the club throughout the show, usually with topless extras gratuitously writhing in the background. Interior scenes were actually filmed here rather than on a set, but if you'd prefer to keep the mature content on your TV and not in your real life, you can settle for a photo of the Bada Bing! sign out in the parking lot.

on location tours sopranos

Satin Dolls is about a half-hour drive north of the eastern Newark suburbs (via I-95). A vacant storefront in one of them, Kearny, was turned by HBO into the set for Satriale's Pork Store ( 101 Kearny Ave. ), another frequent spot for Tony and company's deal- and threat-making as well as "gabagool" consumption. The set was later demolished and turned into a parking lot.

on location tours sopranos

For The Many Saints of Newark , an earlier version of Satriale's was imagined using a building on Market Street in nearby Paterson. (The Satriale's sign there was only temporary, though.)

To visit a Sopranos -related butcher shop that's actually open, head to Centanni's Meat Market , located at 815 2nd Ave. in Elizabeth, about a 30-minute drive south of Kearny via I-95. Centanni's appears in the pilot of The Sopranos in the role that Satriale's would take over for the rest of the run.

To extend your tour into South Jersey, continue on I-95 to reach the Pine Barrens , the ostensible setting for everybody's favorite episode of The Sopranos , a season three outing in which Tony's protégé, Christopher Moltisanti (Michael Imperioli), and henchman Paulie Walnuts (Tony Sirico) get hopelessly lost in snowy woods while trying to handle a Russian mobster.

on location tours sopranos

As the New York Post points out , the episode was actually shot more than a hundred miles to the north of the Pine Barrens, in New York's Harriman State Park.

But we figure you could use some woodsy scenery in Jersey after all that time on the highway. The 1.1 million acres of forest in the Pine Barrens certainly fit the bill.

Don't worry—hiking trails are well marked.

Check out this list of iconic Sopranos filming locations that you can visit in New Jersey

About 15 years after the finale of "The Sopranos," the show continues to captivate old and new fans alike.

As said by The New York Times for the show's 20th anniversary, "On Jan. 10, 1999, a mobster walked into a psychiatrist's office. What happened next - over the course of eight years - was a television revolution."

As many fans and New Jersey residents know, there are a ton of locations all over the state where "The Sopranos" filmed iconic scenes on site.

So, if you are looking for the ultimate Sopranos-themed day out in Jersey, here is the guide for you!

The opening credit drive

If you are really serious about the Tony Soprano thing, you can start with a drive from New York through the Lincoln Tunnel to the Jersey Turnpike. Grab a turnpike ticket like the old days and prepare to drive all over the place because, as it turns out, the drive is not one continuous route.

According to Marc Baron, who runs the Soprano Site Tour , "When they filmed the pilot episode - with a small budget - they shot the opening credits randomly."

If you do want to plan a route, here are a few locations of the iconic shots in the opening credits:

  • The old Hydo-Pruf factory can be seen near exit 15E on the Turnpike.
  • Wilson's Carpet and Furniture, the location with the big Paul Bunyon-like statue, is located in Jersey City at 220 Broadway.
  • The view of the Statue of Liberty would be en route from the Holland Tunnel near exit 14 Turnpike Newark Bay Extension.
  • The "Drive Safely" storage tank is the Bayway Refinery in Linden near exit 12.
  • Pizza Land is located at 260 Belleville Turnpike in North Arlington.

Finally, after all that driving, you might end up at 14 Aspen Drive in North Caldwell, also known as Tony Soprano's house , where people commonly go to take photos at the end of the iconic driveway.

Hungry? Try a food tour tasty enough for Tony Soprano

The first place you might think of when considering a Tony Soprano food tour is Holsten's Ice Cream, Chocolate, and Restaurant located at 1063 Broad St. in Bloomfield where the controversial final scene took place.

"Tony Soprano himself, played by the inimitable late James Gandolfini, sat in one of our classic vinyl booths and ordered a plate of onion rings in the final moments of the hit HBO series," says the Holsten's website . "You can be a part of Sopranos history too. Come in and ask us about the booth where Tony Soprano had his last meal and try the onion rings for yourself."

You can also sift through the jukebox that played "Don't Stop Believin'" and purchase Sopranos merchandise including hats and T-shirts.

Another Sopranos location to grab a bite at is Centanni's Meat Market located at 815 2nd Ave in Elizabeth.

Centanni's is a butcher shop and was the inspiration behind Soprano's go-to gabagool spot, Satriale's Pork Store. Centanni's also served as a filming location in the pilot episode. The real Satriale's filming location in Kearny has been torn down since the end of filming.

A few more iconic Sopranos spots...

If you for some reason are bringing your kids on this excursion, maybe skip this next one.

The Satin Dolls Gentlemen's Club and Sports Bar in Lodi was made famous in "The Sopranos" as the Bada Bing strip club, a key location throughout the series.

The club closed in December of 2017 but reopened in March of 2018 . The name is still Satin Dolls but there is also a sign outside that says, "Home of the original Bada Bing," an attractive piece of signage for Soprano tourists.

Finally, in honor of many people's favorite episode, you can take a hike through the Pine Barrens. Although the Pine Barrens are a bit outside of the boundaries of North Jersey, for Sopranos fans, they are iconic nonetheless. Even though that episode was actually filmed in Harriman State Park, New York. Watch out for any supposed interior designers.

If there are any specific locations you are looking for that were not mentioned here, check out The Sopranos Location Guide .

To entertain you throughout this long drive around Jersey, check out the Sopranos playlist on Spotify that starts with "Woke Up This Morning" by Alabama 3 and ends with 'Don't Stop Believin" by Journey.

Fans or anybody looking to watch the show can stream "The Sopranos" on HBO Max.

You no longer have to be the toughest guy in Essex County.

You don't have to be an interior decorator.

It's OK even if you aren't a made guy.

You can even be a happy wanderer.

Now anyone or any group (even a glorified crew) can visit the same area that your favorite North Jersey mafia family called their own.

The Sopranos Sites Tour, taking place Thursday and Saturday mornings, will take you on a tour of the iconic locations that the HBO series made famous 25 years ago.

The tour takes you through the same stomping grounds and neighborhoods the crew ran for years. You'll also get behind-the-scenes filming secrets and triva along the tour.

You'll want to grab a cigar as you drive the same rode the Skipper took during the opening credits.

You'll see the exact spot Salvatore Bonpensiero, better known as "Big Pus" turned informer when he was arrested.

You'll pay a visit of Barone Sanitation where you can easily made a pool that your coworkers can partake in.

You can stop by the Bada Bing. You'll never forget where you were at that minute! Just don't bring any toys, it's a place of business.

And you'll be able to take a seat at Holsten's Ice Cream, Chocolate and Restaurant the famous booth Tony Soprano was sitting in when he either met his untimely death in the final scene of the last episode, or he had a hamburger and went home with his family. (Don't tell me I'm wrong either way, you have no idea, it's never been proven how it ended!). Don't forget to get onion rings, best in the state as far as I'm concerned.

Sounds like they hit all the key spots, but if ya ask me, they should have stopped at Roy Rogers.

I toured 'The Sopranos'' New Jersey. From the Bada Bing to the parking lot that used to be Satriale's, here's what I saw.

In honor of the hbo series' 25th anniversary, a reporter heads to new jersey to see its memorable filming locations..

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Although The Sopranos is one of my favorite TV shows, I have never had much desire to immerse myself in its New Jersey setting. Yet as someone who recently became more invested thanks to a few enticing TikToks, I knew I had to do something drastic to prove my commitment.

On Jan. 11, one day after the mob drama premiered 25 years ago on HBO , I boarded a bus in Manhattan with On Location Tours to experience the show's setting firsthand along with a few dozen other fans. Our guide peppered us with trivia — most of which I hadn’t heard before. When you watch a show decades after it first aired, you tend to miss out on fun facts about how the series was originally pitched as a movie , or that a certain cast member may or may not have been affiliated with the Colombo crime family.

We weaved through Manhattan’s garment district, once a hot spot for mob activity until the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act took things down a notch in 1970. After traversing the Lincoln Tunnel, we emerged in industrial New Jersey with views of construction sites, factories and waste dumps.

We first got off the bus outside the Paul Bunyan-esque statue that appears briefly in the opening credits. From there, you can see the facade of the building used as Barone Sanitation, the fictional waste management company that Tony claims as his legitimate job to stay out of trouble. We rarely see him there, though, because he’s got a “family” to run.

There’s something especially desolate about the Garden State in winter. There aren’t any trees to break up steady views of parking lots, barbed wire fences and trucker hot spots. Power lines litter the horizon, and we’re reminded that New Jersey was once infamous for its excess of garbage dumps.

We don’t get to see the stately mansion Tony comes home to at the end of the opening credits. According to the tour guide, it’s in a private community and the homeowners were getting annoyed by fans who would show up in their bathrobes to pretend to pick up a paper at the end of the driveway.

We then head to the suburbs of Kearny, passing a number of overpasses and waterways where various characters were “whacked” or buried. At one stop, we walked to the edge of the Passaic River. To the left we were treated to a view of the Newark skyline so we could see where Tony grew up. To the right, a bridge where a confused Junior Soprano (Dominic Chianese) was picked up by police.

In town, we passed the mob’s favorite “casino,” a room above a spa that has enough space to play cards; the church where Carmela dumps a perfectly good plate of ziti after seeing her priest flirting with another dispirited mob wife and the pizza joint where Anthony Jr. orders a pie unique enough to get him in trouble when it's left at a crime scene.

But where we should encounter Satriale’s pork store — which served as the meeting place for mob members throughout the series — only a parking lot remains.

Knowing that something central to the show's plot is no longer there made me emotional. In every episode, James Gandolfini delivers an unforgettable performance. Knowing that he died only six years after the show ended tugs at my heartstrings. Tony is hardly an anti-hero. He’s a bona fide villain who’s murdered several people with his bare hands, and he frequently cheats on his long-suffering wife. His list of sins grows every hour. But Gandolfini plays him with such tenderness that I feel a strange fondness for him. The show’s over and the actor is gone.

Next we stopped at Holsten’s in Bloomfield, N.J. That’s the diner where the show’s final scene was filmed. I ordered onion rings — Tony says they’re the best — and we took turns sitting in the booth where Tony sat with Carmela and his son when the screen suddenly turned to black, infuriating HBO viewers in that last episode in 2007. The charming eatery pays tribute to the show with photos of the cast and plenty of merchandise for sale.

“I haven’t seen the show, don’t tell me what happens,” a young man eating with his friends in a booth said to our tour group. I technically haven’t seen it in full either, but I don’t defend him when my fellow fans snicker.

In January, HBO announced the official Sopranos TikTok account would be uploading a 25-second clip of every episode of the show in honor of its 25th anniversary. The announcement got immediate backlash — fans urged people to “just watch the f***ing show” and condemned the “extremely short attention spans” of social media users that they assumed prompted this.

It’s clearly a marketing tactic; I know this because I would have fallen for it myself if someone’s compelling fan edit hadn’t tipped me over the edge to viewership months ago.

My tour guide John DeFilippo told me he thought the announcement of an official Sopranos TikTok account was a joke at first. The more he considered it, he realized the show is rife with one-liners and humor that still resonates.

“A lot of humor I see in meme culture is literally Sopranos humor,” he said. “I think a lot of people who are discovering it now are in their mid-20s, realizing that this old show is actually relevant to their humor, but they have to be exposed to it first.”

He said it’s not uncommon for new viewers to cement their fandom with a N.J. visit, but it’s also a pilgrimage for the show’s most die-hard fans.

At least two couples on my excursion traveled from the U.K. specifically to tour Sopranos filming locations. One couple, Paul and Jenny Carter, came from England to celebrate his 50th birthday.

"It’s just brilliant. The dialogue, the acting ... everything,” Paul said. “I don’t know how many times I’ve watched it. I come home from work and it’s just on in the background.”

Not everyone loves The Sopranos . When it aired, some said it negatively portrayed both Italian Americans and New Jersey . Before the show’s third season, its crew attempted to get a permit to shoot an episode in the state’s famous Pine Barrens, but it was denied by Essex County Executive James Treffinger, who said The Sopranos “depicts an ethnic group in stereotypical fashion.” That didn’t stop the crew from picking another similar-looking location to film and naming it “Pine Barrens” anyway. It’s considered to be one of the series’ best episodes.

The final stop on the tour — the Bada Bing — didn’t leave much to the imagination. Silvio Dante (Steve Van Zant) owns the fictional strip club that serves as a popular meeting hub. The Bing scenes are filmed at a real-life gentleman’s club, Satin Dolls. It’s still open decades later — including at 1 p.m. on a Thursday.

I wasn’t allowed to take photos inside the club, but it felt familiar, being the first place we visited that appeared regularly on The Sopranos . TVs played different sports-centric stations as several lingerie-clad dancers swayed to a Five Finger Death Punch song. Some of my tour mates ordered drinks, and our tour guide told us that we could get a lap dance as long as we got back to the bus on time. I left my wallet on board, so I spent a lot of time alone with my thoughts, eyeing peeling leather furniture.

Much of The Sopranos’ charm comes from the fact that its setting is rough around the edges. Tony and his companions might have millions to their names, but they had to have their business meetings in a smoky strip club back room. Tony might wake up to a lavish breakfast in a pristine mansion, but he’s got to commit a few crimes to sustain the lifestyle. The show lays bare the complexities of the mob life.

Though I learned more about the best places to dump bodies in New Jersey than the spots to get a fancy pasta dinner, the tour gave me a new appreciation for the series.

I’m now incapable of watching The Sopranos without spouting as much trivia as possible. And to celebrate my new fan status, I spent the entire weekend in mob wife attire baking Camela’s ziti recipe from The Sopranos Family Cookbook for my goombas . It was molto bene.

2024 women's NCAA Tournament Final Four dates, game times, TV, location, teams and more

The stars will be out on Friday night in the women's Final Four.

Iowa's Caitlin Clark , South Carolina's Kamilla Cardoso, UConn's Paige Bueckers and NC State's Aziaha James will all take the court in Cleveland with a trip to the national championship game on the line, and each has their own calling card as they enter the championship rounds.

Clark's story is well-documented at this point , but endlessly impressive nonetheless: She put together a Her-culean effort in Iowa's win over LSU in the Elite Eight, with a 41-point game (and a bit of revenge). Cardoso has been a force in the paint for the Gamecocks, and she'll look to take her game to the next level at the conclusion of the women's tournament.

J ames has exploded in the tournament , capping off brilliant performance after brilliant performance with a 7-for-9 night from 3-point land in the Wolfpack's win over Texas in the Elite Eight. Last, and certainly not least, Bueckers wants to cap off this UConn run with that elusive championship – but she plans to run it back with the Huskies next season should things go south between now and then.

The sprawling, mind-boggling metropolis of Russian Moscow has long been one of the theatrical stages on which the great dramas of Europe and Asia have been played out in grand style. Burned by Napoleon in 1812, immortalised by Tolstoy, utilised by the Bolsheviks and championed as a bastion of heroic defiance by the post-war communists, it’s almost hard to believe just how defining the historical events that found their home on Moscow’s streets have been. Moscow tour guides will easily be able to mark the major must-see landmarks on the map, from the onion-domed orthodox Saint Basil's Cathedral, to the political powerhouse of Red Square just next door, while others will be quick to recommend a ride on Moscow’s famous subterranean metro system, or a visit to the UNESCO-attested Novodevichy Convent on the city’s southern side. But Moscow is a city also in the throes of a cultural wrangling between the old and the new. Creative energies abound here: Boho bars and pumping super clubs now occupy the iconic mega structures of the old USSR; high-fashion outlets, trendy shopping malls and luxurious residential districts stand as testimony to a city that’s now the undisputed playground of the world’s super-rich, while sprawling modern art museums dominate the cultural offering of the downtown districts north of the Moskva River.
