Los Angeles Cruise Guide

Due to its location along the Pacific Coast, many cruise itineraries to Mexico, the Panama Canal, South America, the Transpacific and Hawaii depart from the city of Los Angeles. This is the best port to find affordable getaways to the Mexican Riviera.

The port itself is actually located in Long Beach, which is a short drive away from the big-city L.A., but also has its fair share of attractions. You can stay overnight at the Queen Mary, a retired vintage luxury ocean liner that is rumored to be haunted and offers ghost tours. Take a dip in the calm waters at the beach, or take a whale watching tour along the Pacific Ocean. Once you’ve seen it all at the port, a short ride by car, Uber or the L.A. Metro brings you to the star-studded city of Los Angeles, where you can easily spend a week exploring all that it has to offer.

The city of Los Angeles is home to the biggest names in arts and culture, so it comes as no surprise that there’s a large variety of cultural attractions and museums. There are must-see art galleries like The Getty, which features classical exhibitions and artifacts, and the popular new museum, The Broad, which is free to enter, and features more modern exhibits. Music lovers can check out the GRAMMY Museum, or catch a concert at the beautifully designed Walt Disney Concert Hall. Los Angeles is the birthplace of American Cinema, so there’s also a variety of studio backlot tours that you can take, like Universal Studios, Warner Brothers, NBC and more. If you catch yourself walking along the historical streets of Hollywood, be sure to look down and spot some of your favorite celebrities names on their Stars at the Walk of Fame.

There are many ways to snap a picture of the infamous Hollywood sign, depending on the angle you’d like. If you have a car you can make a pit stop along Deronda Drive, and take a quick walk over to the sign. If you’re looking for more of a challenge, take the 6-mile hike along the Brush Canyon Trail, where you’ll eventually get that picture-perfect shot. You can also see the sign from outside of the Griffith Observatory, where for a small fee you can go up to the top of the observatory and take in the best panoramic views of the city of Los Angeles.

Los Angeles is also known for its diverse range of shops. For high-end designer trends, be sure to explore Rodeo Drive, where you might even run into a celebrity or two. For hip vintage and thrift shops, walk along Melrose, and for the ultimate cheap finds, check out the Los Angeles Fashion District. There’s also no shortage of food, with delicious restaurants and popular chains on every block. Los Angeles is home to In-N-Out Burger, a popular West Coast fast food chain, as well as many other restaurants owned by celebrity chefs and popular Instagram-worthy cafés.

The 930-passenger Viking Sky – which debuted in February 2017 – receives rave reviews from past cruisers for its port-heavy itineraries (fares include one complimentary excursion per port) and luxurious, comfortable staterooms. Cabins offer between 270 and 1,448 square feet of space and include balconies, complimentary Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs and bathrooms with heated floors, among other amenities. Those who opt for an upgraded stateroom or suite are treated to additional perks, like priority reservations at the spa and specialty restaurants.

Viking Sky's activities include classes at the fitness center, treatments at the spa and destination-focused lectures. The ship also offers two pools and two whirlpools, including an infinity pool on the stern of the ship. In the evenings, passengers can enjoy live performances in the theater or watch destination-related movies in one of two cinemas.

Guests also have their choice of cuisine, from alfresco dining on the Aquavit Terrace to Manfredi's Italian Restaurant. With 550 crew members on board, the ship maintains a nearly 2-to-1 guest-to-crew ratio.

Viking Sky sails to the Mediterranean, Europe, Central America and more. The ship also offers world voyages.

Debuted in May 2023, Oceania Cruises' first new ship in more than a decade can hold up to 1,200 passengers and 800 crew members. Vista is the inaugural ship in Oceania's Allura Class, featuring top-of-the-line amenities like a culinary center, an artist loft and an extensive library, along with facilities like a pool, a casino, a spa and a fitness center. Additionally, Vista offers enrichment opportunities like destination-focused seminars led by guest speakers and dynamic musical performances.

One of the highlights of Oceania Vista is its wide array of dining venues, from specialty restaurants like Ember (American fare) and Toscana (Italian cuisine) to the poolside Waves Grill and daily afternoon tea service. In the evening, guests can grab a drink at their choice of several bars and lounges; Vista's immersive mixology program utilizes innovative techniques and trends to create an elevated cocktail experience.

Vista's well-appointed staterooms – which range from 240 to 2,400 square feet – boast balconies, queen-size beds, rainforest showers, flat-screen TVs and 24-hour room service, among other amenities. If you splurge for a suite, you'll enjoy added benefits like iPads, cashmere blankets, complimentary laundry and shoeshine services, access to the Executive Lounge and butler service.

Oceania Vista explores an array of popular destinations in the U.S., the Caribbean, Mexico, the Mediterranean and more.

U.S. News Insider Tip:  The design of the Vista creates more expansive and contemporary public areas than other ships in Oceania's fleet, so even when the ship is at full capacity, it never feels crowded. Also, since it is an all-veranda ship, all guests have the same great ocean view. – Julie L. Kessler, Contributor

Silver Moon

Cruisers seeking an intimate experience should consider booking a trip aboard Silversea's Silver Moon, one of the line's newest ships. Debuted in June 2021, Silver Moon accommodates just 596 passengers. And with 411 crew members, travelers can expect an attentive experience.

One standout amenity is the Sea And Land Taste (S.A.L.T.) program. The dining experience aims to introduce passengers to their destinations through food. On board, the S.A.L.T. Lab offers travelers the chance to participate in tastings and workshops, while the S.A.L.T. Kitchen provides a unique dining experience. On shore, foodies can book special cuisine-focused excursions through the program. Not an adventurous eater? Not to worry. Silver Moon boasts seven additional eateries serving everything from pizza to tapas to grilled meat and fish.

Following a delicious meal, travelers will have access to a wealth of amenities, including the spa, a pool, several whirlpools, lounges and a fitness center. When evening rolls around, cruisers can press their luck at the casino or catch a live show.

A member of Carnival Cruise Line's Vista class, the Carnival Panorama debuted in December 2019 as the first new Carnival ship homeported on the West Coast in 20 years. With a capacity of 4,008 guests and 1,450 crew, Panorama is one of Carnival's largest ships.

Seabourn Quest

Seabourn Quest, which launched in June 2011, is one of the smallest ships in Seabourn's fleet. It can fit up to 458 passengers and about one crew member for every cruiser. It is virtually identical to the Seabourn Sojourn and Seabourn Odyssey .

Seabourn Quest differs from the line's newer ships in terms of accommodations, as it offers some Ocean View Suites with porthole windows instead of verandas. However, all cabins still come equipped with amenities like flat-screen TVs, designer toiletries, personalized stationery, Egyptian cotton linens and in-suite bars stocked with your preferred refreshments.

Outside your suite, you can enjoy a range of pursuits, such as spa and salon treatments, free fitness classes, a nine-hole putting green and two swimming pools. Additionally, Seabourn Quest offers complimentary water sports equipment rentals at its Watersports Marina in select destinations.

Once you've worked up an appetite, sit for a meal at one of the ship's four restaurants, including the main dining room and The Grill, a steakhouse helmed by Michelin-starred chef Thomas Keller. And for evening entertainment, you'll have access to a variety of bars, plus a casino, a dance club and the Grand Salon, where cabaret performances, comedy shows and more are hosted nightly.

Quest sails to and from destinations around the Caribbean, Mediterranean, Northern Europe and more.

As part of Oceania's fleetwide revamp, Regatta was completely redesigned in September 2019. Passengers in Veranda Staterooms and Suites will enjoy verandas and spaces ranging from 216 to 1,000 square feet, while Inside and Ocean View cabins are smaller. The ship now offers solo staterooms for those who are traveling alone. No matter which you choose, all staterooms are equipped with minibars, flat-screen TVs and 24-hour room service, plus all-new furnishings and marble bathrooms.

The 670 passengers will receive Oceania's signature service, with 400 crew members catering to guests' needs. Recent cruisers noted they rarely encountered crowds in the ship's public areas. The atmosphere aboard Regatta is decidedly adult, as the ship caters to older, affluent cruisers.

Entertainment varies from nightly musical performances to table games at the casino. Dining is also diverse: Regatta offers five venues ranging from the formal dining room to a casual grill. All-new plant-based menu items are also available.

Regatta sails to destinations in Mexico, Asia, Australia and more.

Seabourn Sojourn

The 458-passenger Seabourn Sojourn debuted in June 2010 and features all-suite accommodations. About 90% of the suites offer verandas, and all accommodations provide 24-hour room service, flat-screen TVs, bathrooms with dual sinks and a separate living area and bedroom. What's more, cruisers are welcomed with complimentary Champagne upon arrival and can enjoy a fruit basket that's refreshed daily. A suite stewardess is assigned to each cabin to assist with requests as well. Sojourn is virtually identical to its sister ships, Seabourn Odyssey  and Seabourn Quest .

Outside the rooms, travelers can gamble at the casino, work up a sweat in the fitness center or relax at the spa. Those interested in soaking up the sun can snag a spot by one of two swimming pools or enjoy one of five hot tubs. Cruisers can also fuel their competitive juices with a round of shuffleboard or golf on the nine-hole putting green. When anchored, vacationers in select destinations can take advantage of the ship's water sports equipment, such as kayaks and paddle boats.

There are four dining venues to choose from on the Seabourn Sojourn, including casual and fine dining options. In the evening, cruisers can enjoy cocktails at one of the bars or dance under the stars. The ship's nearly 1-to-1 crew-to-passenger ratio means cruisers should expect exceptional service.

Sojourn sails to destinations in the Caribbean, the Panama Canal and the Mediterranean, as well as some trans-Atlantic sailings.

11 of the Best Cruises from Los Angeles

Aerial View Of Cruise Ship Sailing On Sea

During the 1970s and 1980s, a fun, indulgent cruise from Los Angeles meant one thing: "The Love Boat," the original ABC Television show. (Let's just say I'm among the baby boomers who fondly recall those original episodes.) Aired in living rooms across North America, the show put "cruising" on the map as a vacation choice.

This year, more than 30 million travelers are expected to cruise, up 6% from last year. And for West Coast travelers who find Florida departures inconvenient, or for people across North America eager for an Alaska, Mexican Riviera or Hawaii cruise, many companies are bolstering their California line-up at both the Port of Los Angeles (San Pedro) and nearby Port of Long Beach.

From the Golden State, travelers can sail north to the glacier-filled waters surrounding Alaska, or navigate the Pacific to the Hawaiian Islands. There are also cruises leaving the Los Angeles area that will carry you south, to Mexico, and beyond — including those that squeeze through the Panama Canal.

Just remember, redeeming points for cruises at a good value can be tricky, so consider using one of the best credit cards for cruises and watch out for bonus categories and bonus offers.

Mexican Riviera Cruises

Seeking sun, tequila tasting and great Mexican food south of the border? Who better to take guests to the Mexican Riviera than Princess Cruises , which in 1965 became the first major cruise line to operate those voyages from Los Angeles at San Pedro? I'd opt for a week-long round-trip Mexican Riviera sailing on Royal Princess, available this spring and again this fall. Ports of call include Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlán and Puerto Vallarta. Princess operates multiple ships at Los Angeles, but let's just say it's all about that "new car feel" here, as this 3,560-passenger ship is currently undergoing a $16 million revitalization. So, when Royal Princess resumes cruising in March from Los Angeles, travelers onboard will be some of the first to experience the refreshed vessel. All staterooms and suites will have new Princess Luxury Beds, and Royal Princess will also offer the stand-out production show, "The Secret Silk," developed in partnership with Stephen Schwartz (composer of "Wicked," "Godspell" and "Pippin").

Norwegian Cruise Line's new amenity-laden, 4,004-passenger Norwegian Bliss was an instant star when it recently began cruising from Los Angeles (San Pedro) to the Mexican Riviera. Based on consumer demand, Norwegian also will bring a nearly new sister, the 3,802-passenger Norwegian Joy , back from China. After a $50 million revitalization, the ship will sail seven-night "Jewels of the Mexican Riviera" itineraries roundtrip from Los Angeles to Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlán and Puerto Vallarta. What's special about Norwegian Joy? Tech fans undoubtedly will flock to the ship's innovative Galaxy Pavilion, a virtual reality world with simulators (just imagine riding a roller coaster in the dark), interactive video walls and more. Additionally, the Lotus Spa & Fitness Center will receive new equipment and fitness machines.

As Carnival Cruise Line's first new ship dedicated to West Coast cruising in two decades, the new, 4,008-passenger Carnival Panorama will begin seven-night Mexican Riviera cruises from the Port of Long Beach in December. This Vista - class ship will sail to Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlán and Puerto Vallarta, with plenty of shore time. Back onboard, guests can happily chow down at the BlueIguana Cantina for burritos and tacos — just one of multiple dining options. Fun features for guests include a WaterWorks aqua park with corkscrew slides and a tipping bucket, a bicycle-in-the-sky SkyRide for bird's eye views from atop the ship, and the new Sky Zone, the cruise industry's first trampoline park at sea. For those seeking serious pampering, opt for a spa stateroom with exclusive privileges at the Cloud 9 Spa; an extra-roomy stateroom in Family Harbor; or a Havana stateroom or suite with exclusive daytime access to a Cuban-themed bar and aft outdoor pool.

The Haven Sundeck on Norwegian Bliss

Panama Canal Cruises

Some voyages along Mexico's Pacific coastline continue southward on an iconic Panama Canal transit. For guests with an active bent and sense of adventure, one appealing option is Royal Caribbean International's 15-night voyage on the 2,050-passenger Vision of the Seas, departing Dec. 1, 2019 from Los Angeles (San Pedro) to San Juan, Puerto Rico. Port calls include Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala; and Puntarenas, Costa Rica on the Pacific Coast, as well as Cartagena, Colombia and Oranjestad, Aruba in the Caribbean. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy rainforest hiking, kayaking and snorkeling. Back on the ship, there's a 40-foot-high rock climbing wall. Vision of the Seas , which also offers roundtrip Mexican Riviera cruises from San Pedro, has robust children's and teen clubs; Centrum aerial performances; plus, specialty dining at Chops Grille, Izumi, Giovanni's Table and others.

For a different vibe, try a refined Panama Canal voyage that goes coast-to-coast with touches reflecting the "Golden Age of Cruising." On July 5, Cunard Line's 2,092-passenger Queen Elizabeth departs on a 19-night voyage south from Los Angeles (San Pedro) to New York; the route is along the Mexican coastline, through the Panama Canal and the Caribbean to Port Everglades, Florida, and then to New York. On this ship, the entertainment is far more traditional: ballroom dancing to live orchestra music in the elegant Queens Room. But Cunard's ships can be "down home," too. For a sea day lunch, one of our favorite spots is the Golden Lion Pub for fish and chips or bangers and mash.

If travelers seek ultra-luxury (and we do mean ultra ), Regent Seven Seas Cruises offers a 15-night Panama Canal sailing from Los Angeles to Miami on Sept. 30; it's operated by the 700-passenger Seven Seas Mariner , revitalized bow-to-stern in 2018. Or, for a longer Panama Canal and Caribbean cruise, Seabourn's 450-passenger Seabourn Sojourn cruises for 31 nights from Los Angeles to Miami on Oct. 16. A highlight of this sailing is that the ship calls at three different Cuban ports, including two days in Havana, where you can take a ride in a colorful, 1950s automobile.

California Cruises

Of course, one of the best itineraries you can take from Los Angeles is a coastal California voyage. Check out upscale Oceania Cruises' seven-night "Stars of the Vine" voyage on the 684-passenger Sirena. This lovely, boutique-style ship will emerge in May from a $100 million "re-inspiration" and every surface of every stateroom and suite will be updated (think: gleaming marble bathrooms). Public spaces will get a makeover, too, with a new, brighter color palette and more contemporary furniture. Sirena's coastal voyage departs roundtrip from Los Angeles on Dec. 7, 2019 and Dec. 14, 2019. First up is a day at Catalina Island, followed by a day in Ensenada, Mexico, where guests can taste wines from Baja California's Guadalupe Valley. Guests can then relax for a sea day before venturing ashore at San Francisco, Monterey and Santa Barbara, all offering prolific vino-tasting opportunities. Back onboard Sirena, cruisers can enjoy such creature comforts as wine-and-culinary activities and the full-service Canyon Ranch Spa.

Alaska Cruises

For those seeking a vacation to "America's Last Frontier," it's possible to sail roundtrip from Los Angeles at San Pedro to Alaska. I'd check out Princess Cruises' 2020 departures on multiple dates with four different ships. Port calls include Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan, in Alaska, plus Victoria, British Columbia. Depending on the itinerary, your sailing will also stop at either Icy Point Strait and the Hubbard Glacier, or the ultimate Alaska "bucket list" destination: Glacier Bay. It's a two-week voyage typically (12 to 14 nights) with many days at sea, so expect to spend a lot of time onboard.

Hawaii and Tahiti Cruises

Given that Honolulu, Hawaii is 3,000 or so nautical miles from Los Angeles, it's hardly a quick jaunt. But travelers who don't mind a leisurely, longer voyage (typically nine sea days and four back-to-back days exploring Hawaii) have several good choices. On Oct. 27, premium Celebrity Cruises' offers a pampering, 15-night voyage roundtrip from Los Angeles at San Pedro on the 2,850-passenger Celebrity Eclipse, one of its popular Solstice-class vessels. During the four days in Hawaii, Celebrity's guests might visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, attend a luau or cultural presentation, visit Pearl Harbor, or take a coffee-and-chocolate or helicopter tour. Cruisers can also book a zip lining experience in Hilo that soars over waterfalls and through a rainforest. This cruise also spends a day at Ensenada, Mexico.

And next year, on Jan. 5, 2020, Azamara Club Cruises' 694-passenger Azamara Journey will sail an 18-night "Hawaii and Tahiti" cruise from Los Angeles to Papeete, Tahiti. Cruisers have five relaxing days at sea before reaching Hawaii and plenty of time to enjoy this boutique-style luxury ship's Sun Deck, multiple dining venues, spa, enrichment lectures and entertainment. Calls will include Hilo, Hawaii; Lahaina, Maui; Honolulu, Oahu; and Nawiliwili, Kauai. After many more days at sea, the ship reaches French Polynesia for time ashore at Bora Bora, Moorea and, finally, Papeete, where the ship overnights. Guests might go snorkeling or hike through a tropical valley, and then in the evening, sample culinary specialties from the city's famous "roulettes" (food trucks called caravans).

Cruise from Los Angeles, California

When it comes to the Los Angeles cruise port, there is no shortage of cruise options. Residents of LA can cruise on some of today's most popular cruise lines such as Cunard, Crystal Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises, Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean, Silversea and many others. Cruise destinations include the Caribbean, Hawaii, Mexico, Panama Canal and even South America.

LA Cruise Port

San Pedro is the home of the Port of Los Angeles World Cruise Center, the busiest passenger port of call on the United States West Coast. The two closest airports to the pier are Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Long Beach Airport (LGB).

The port is approximately 20.1 miles south of the Los Angeles International Airport. Travel time from the airport to the pier is approximately 35-45 minutes. Shuttle service (approx $18 for a shared ride) and taxis (approx $80) are readily available.

If you are flying into Long Beach Airport the port is 19.1 miles from the pier.  Travel time is approximately 20 -30 minutes from here to the pier. Shuttle service (approx $17 for a shared ride) and taxis (approx $50) are readily available.

If you are driving to the pier, parking is available for $12 per day and may be paid by cash, major credit card or traveler’s checks. All parking rates are based on per space only. If you occupy more than one space, you will be charged for all occupied spaces. A courtesy shuttle bus is provided to and from the parking lot to the cruise terminal on scheduled ship days. Please note that the shuttle buses are not wheelchair accessible.

Pre and Post Cruise Options from Los Angeles, California

The sprawling metropolis of Los Angeles with its subtropical climate, palm trees, and expanse of powdery white sand beaches makes it a perfect city for a pre or post cruise stay.  This is a city of glitz and glamour, beautiful people, and the movers and shakers of the movie industry.  It’s also a child friendly town filled with theme parks, movie studios and museums.  All this makes a cruise from Los Angeles, California a perfect land/sea vacation that the entire family will enjoy.  Whether you have one day or several days to in the area, your options of things to do is endless.  Here are a few of my favorites:

Los Angeles Harbor

Universal Studios Hollywood:  This theme park has thrilling rides and live shows and is also a real working movie studio.  Go behind the scenes on the legendary Studio Tour to explore where Hollywood movies are made and experience the largest movie set street in Hollywood history.  In the evening head to Universal Studios City Walk for great dining, shopping, and shows.

LA

Disneyland:  Drop by California’s version of the “Happiest Place on Earth” and say hello to Mickey and friends. Celebrate the worlds of yesterday, fantasy and tomorrow with timeless attractions, exciting entertainment and magical moments that last a lifetime! Right next-door is Disney’s California Adventure, a theme park that is a tribute to different regions of the Golden State.

TV Tapings : This is a great way to see Hollywood at work, to find out how your favorite sitcom or talk show is made, and to catch a glimpse of your favorite TV personalities. Request tickets online as early as possible.  Tickets are sometimes given away to the public outside popular tourist sites like Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood and Universal Studios in the Valley.  The L.A.’s visitor information centers in Downtown and Hollywood often have tickets as well.

Bonus tips: plan your itinerary in advance, but leave room for the unexpected. Be ready and open to adapting your plans, and be OK with missing things if necessary!

Day 1 – Venice & Santa Monica

1- visit the venice canals.

5 day cruise los angeles

Your first day in Los Angeles begins with the buzzing neighbourhood of Venice Beach and one of its hidden gems: the Venice canals.

Created in 1905 by developer Abbot Kinney as part of his Venice of America, the canals are today a quiet sanctuary and community of Los Angeles composed of six waterways surrounded by modern homes.

Minutes away from the crowded boardwalk, it is a quaint and peaceful area to start your day and an easy place to explore on foot.  Stroll along the canals, walk across arching wooden bridges and take in the beautiful views along the journey  – before heading to the beach.

Personal note – I absolutely loved wandering around the Venice Canals! The houses were gorgeous, and I even thought that if I lived in LA one day, I would live in this area (although I can not imagine how expensive these houses are).

2- Take photos from the Venice Pier

5 day cruise los angeles

Your walk continues with the Venice Fishing Pier, a long dock extending into the Pacific Ocean and a  perfect spot for panoramic views  of Venice Beach and its Ocean Front Walk. It is a simple thing to do, but it will give you another perspective on the city – something I recommend.

3- Wander along the Venice Beach Boardwalk

5 day cruise los angeles

It is time to discover the famous promenade, one of the top attractions in Los Angeles!

Stretching about a mile and a half along the Pacific Ocean, the boardwalk is a fascinating area to discover, from hundreds of street vendors and performers to street art and eclectic restaurants and bars. There is most definitely something for everyone and fun for the entire family.

Whether you want to hit the beach, strengthen your body at Muscle Beach, admire street art and murals or skate at the Venice Skate Park, there are  plenty of things to do and see on the Venice Broadwalk . Here are some of them:

  • Enjoy a street performance
  • Explore on a bike
  • Buy handmade arts and crafts
  • Skate the park
  • Get a henna tattoo
  • Listen to live music
  • Take plenty of photos
  • Find the iconic suspended Venice sign
  • Uncover unique art walls

4- Stroll on the Santa Monica Pier

5 day cruise los angeles

After experiencing the lively atmosphere of Venice Beach and its renowned ocean walkway, it is time to head to Santa Monica, a coastal city west of downtown Los Angeles.

Your first stop will be its Pier, home to the Pacific Park amusement park, the Looff Hippodrome Carousel and Santa Monica Pier Aquarium. Whether or not you want to hop on an attraction, it is still a lovely place to  ramble, shop for souvenirs and take in breathtaking views  – perfect for a romantic stroll, especially at sunset.

And if you want more sensation,  go on the rides  such as the West Coaster and the Pacific Wheel – very touristy, but I loved it! They are also great family-friendly activities to do with children.

You guessed it – you will not run out of ideas for things to do and see in this scenic seaside area.

A few minutes from the Pier, you will find the Third Street Promenade, an open-air pedestrian esplanade in the downtown area of Santa Monica, consisting of more than 80 retailers.

This vibrant urban neighbourhood is a  shopper haven  where you will find everything you need (and want), from markets with fresh produce to designer fashions. It is the perfect place to  grab souvenirs  for family and friends or to treat yourself.

Along your walk, you will also encounter street performers and  delicious restaurants  offering local ingredients and craft cocktails. Do not hesitate to stop and appreciate a well-deserved break.

End your day in Santa Monica with a  magical sunset over the Pacific Ocean . Walk the waterfront or sit on a bench and watch the sun slowly setting and disappearing over the horizon (a perfect moment for couples!).

I promise you, a sunset in Los Angeles is something else and a must-do activity. You will not regret taking the time to slow down and pause for a moment.

Day 2 – Griffith, Hollywood & Beverly Hills

The second day of your 5-day vacation in Los Angeles begins in Griffith Park, a large urban oasis spanning over 4,107 acres of natural terrain, full of beauty and historical landmarks.

From the Giffith Observatory to the Greek Theatre and the Los Angeles Zoo, this area has something for everyone and offers many activities such as hiking, biking or horse riding.

1- Explore Griffith Observatory

5 day cruise los angeles

One thing not to miss on your journey through Griffith Park is the Griffith Observatory, a building perched on the southern slopes of Mount Hollywood, offering  scenic views of Los Angeles and fascinating science and technology exhibits .

As a perfect family-friendly activity in the heart of Los Angeles,  here are some of the best things to do in the observatory :

  • Take in the breathtaking views of LA and Hollywood Hills
  • Visit the Samuel Oschin Planetarium
  • Look through the 12-inch Zeiss telescope
  • Discover exhibitions on captivating topics

Personal note – the Giffith Obersavtory was one of my favourite things to do! I enjoyed walking around the building and discovering different viewpoints of the city. I also loved wandering inside and learning more about space and science. It was such a peaceful place!

2- Hike to Hollywood Sign

los angeles itinerary 5 days

It is impossible not to mention the famous Hollywood Sign on this 5-day itinerary. Created in 1923 as a giant advertisement for the Hollywoodland real estate industry, it is today a renowned landmark and cultural icon overlooking Hollywood on Mount Lee.

You can  hike to the sign from several trails , including the following ones starting from Sunset Ranch, Bronson Canyon or the Observatory parking lot.

I started mine from Sunset Ranch, and it was great. However, come prepared and bring a hat, sunscreen and a water bottle. There is not much shade on the way up, and it is (very) hot.

Once you reach the summit, you will find yourself behind the impressive letters and have a stunning view of the city (which must be incredible at sunset).

And if you have more time,  here are some other great things to do and see in Griffith Park :

  • Visit the Autry Museum of the American West
  • Horse ride with the Sunset Ranch
  • Watch a show at The Greek Theatre

3- Walk the Hollywood Boulevard

los angeles itinerary 5 days

Here we are, Hollywood Boulevard or the Walk of Fame! After finishing your exploration of Griffith Park, head to one of the most well-known streets in the world, filled with attractions celebrating the rich film and entertainment heritage of Los Angeles.

From the TCL Chinese Theatre to the Hollywood Wax Museum and the iconic stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, here are the  best things to do and see on Hollywood Boulevard :

  • Stroll down the Walk of Fame
  • Stop at the TCL Chinese Theatre
  • Watch a movie at the Dolby Theatre
  • Visit the Hollywood Wax Museum
  • Shop at the Ovation Hollywood

4- Stop at the Beverly Hills Sign

los angeles itinerary 5 days

Your final stop on your second day in Los Angeles will be the luxurious city of Beverly Hills, home to many Hollywood stars and upscale shopping streets. To get there, continue your walk (or drive) from Hollywood Boulevard to Sunset Boulevard (another great area to explore).

You will then come across the Beverly Hills Sign, sitting atop a lily pad pond, surrounded by Beverly Gardens Park. It is a lovely place to  walk around and take a break to recharge your batteries  (and relax your legs if you have been walking). In the same park, you will also find the Electric Fountain, an art sculpture and evening lighting with decorative mosaics.

los angeles itinerary 5 days

After a well-deserved break, stroll down Rodeo Drive, a two-mile-long street featuring more than a hundred major international brands.  Admire the tall palm trees and upscale boutiques, and wander the Rodeo Drive Walk of Style , a public walkway adorned with bronze plaques honouring people in the fashion and design industry.

And if you still have energy,  here are a few other things you can do in Beverly Hills :

  • Spot celebrity houses
  • Visit Greystone Mansion
  • Explore Franklin Canyon Park
  • Uncover the Spadena House

Day 3 – Marina del Rey & Malibu

Your third day in Los Angeles will be about relaxation and unwinding, starting in Marina del Rey, a lovely coastal city with yachts, beaches and plenty of walking and biking trails.

1- Relax in Marina del Rey

los angeles itinerary 5 days

You will start your day at this charming harbour, Marina del Rey, a peaceful oasis in the heart of Los Angeles, offering many family-friendly activities on and by the water.

Have fun on a paddleboard, embark on a sailboat cruise or stroll along the waterfront  – there are plenty of things to do for a morning in the area, away from the noise and hectic city life.

Here are some  more ideas of what you can do in Marina del Rey :

  • Walk along the coast
  • Join a wildlife-watching trip
  • Try paddleboard yoga
  • Go kayaking
  • Hit the beach
  • Eat in a local restaurant

2- Drive the Pacific Coast Highway

Your second part of the day will lead you to Malibu, a beachfront town and surfer paradise located west of Los Angeles.

To reach the sunny city, you will have the chance to drive on one of the most scenic Californian roads: the Pacific Coast Highway. This state route spans over 600 miles from the north of San Fransisco to the south of Los Angeles and takes you through incredible and unforgettable landscapes – a favourite for road trips in the USA!

Even though you will travel on the highway for a short time, you will be able to  enjoy beautiful ocean scenery along the journey , so do not hesitate to stop and take in the views.

los angeles itinerary 5 days

Stretching for more than 30 miles along the Pacific, Malibu is a peaceful beach town famous for its celebrity homes, surfers and pristine beaches – and where you will spend the other half of your third day.

If many parts of the town are private and exclusive, there is still plenty of Malibu charm for visitors to access and enjoy. And if surfing is your thing, you have definitely come to the right place!

For the most thrilling waves, you will find  Surfrider Beach  next to the Malibu Pier. And if you prefer to sunbathe and relax, head to  Zuma Beach,  attracting locals and families year-round.

Finally, if you prefer spending time in nature and spotting wildlife, discover the  Point Dume  at the north end of Malibu, providing an ideal perch for watching birds and migrating grey whales in winter.

Here are a few more fun and unique things to do in Malibu :

  • Explore El Matador rock formations
  • Join a Malibu wine tour
  • Hike through Malibu Creek Park
  • Taste delicious seafood
  • Uncover the Escondido Falls
  • Visit Getty Villa
  • Enjoy a sunset on the beach

Day 4 – Downtown LA

1- explore the arts district.

Your 5-day Los Angeles itinerary continues with the Art Districts, a neighbourhood on the east end of Downtown LA, home to many creatives in green tech, architecture and entertainment.

Once an industrial zone and residence of an urban artist community in the 1970s, the Art Districts has recently re-emerged as a hip hub for creatives of all types. It is today a  fascinating place for locals and visitors alike to explore , from the most exciting places to dine to numerous galleries and plenty of daytime attractions for adults and children.

Start your day with a street art tour, admire the work of up-and-coming artists at the creative hub, taste street food at a food truck restaurant and immerse yourself in a burgeoning urban atmosphere.

2- Eat at the Grand Central Market

We can not mention the Grand Central Market for your next stop and place to eat in Downtown LA! As a paradise for food lovers, the market has been a landmark since 1917, bringing together the  cuisines and cultures of Los Angeles through fantastic vendors and events .

Whether you are a meat eater, seafood enthusiast or vegan at heart – there is something for everyone. Take the time to explore and enjoy 🙂

3- Ramble through Echo Park

Continue your itinerary through Downtown Los Angeles with Echo Park, a district bordered by Silver Lake to the west and Chinatown to the east, home to many burgeoning artists, writers and musicians. This area is  excellent to ramble through and is fully accessible on foot.

Whether you want to spend a relaxing time at Echo Park Lake or a fun afternoon at Dodger Stadium,  there is plenty to do in this historic and diverse neighbourhood . Here are some ideas:

  • See the local art
  • Explore Echo Park Lake with a pedal boat
  • Hike in Elysian Park
  • See a Dodgers game

The next and final stop on your fourth day in Los Angeles is Silver Lake, a hipster district teeming with street arts, artisanal coffee shops, indie music venues, and trendy bars and shops. The area also includes illustrations of modernist architecture and a reservoir enveloped by a popular walking path with a dog park and a lush field.

Although you will not find many famous sights or attractions, Silver Lake is still an  incredible place to explore, with plenty of exciting things for families, couples and friends . Climb the secret stairs through hillside houses, relax by Silver Lake Reservoir or shop along Sunset Junction – you will not run out of ideas for what to do.  Here are a few more activities :

  • Relax by the Silver Lake Reservoir
  • Shop around Sunset Junction
  • Stroll through the farmers’ market
  • Walk up the Silver Lake stairs

Day 5 – Theme parks

5 day cruise los angeles

Your last day in Los Angeles! On this fifth day, you will have some fun and end your LA itinerary with one or more theme parks.

As the centre of the film and television industry, you can imagine that Los Angeles contains many  iconic studios such as Paramount Pictures, Universal and Warner Brothers  – all of which offer behind-the-scenes tours. And it is the perfect activity for families and cinema addicts!

I did the Warner Bros. Studio Tour, and it was incredible. It was great to see locations and sets of well-known films and series, such as Spider-man, Batman or Friends!

  • Paramount Pictures  – 2-hour tour
  • Warner Bros. Studios  – 1-hour guided + 2-hour unguided
  • Universal Studios : 1-hour tour

Universal Studios is also a theme park, and you can do the Studio Tour with your park admission – unlike Paramount or Warner Bros.

I did the Universal Studios theme park during Halloween – it was so fun! But as we had special night tickets, we could not do the Studio Tour.

If you are looking for a more thrilling activity, head to  6 Flags Magic Mountain , an amusement park home to the most exciting (and craziest) roller coasters I have ever encountered! It is a bit outside Los Angeles (35 miles – 35 minutes without traffic) but easy to get to by car or taxi. And it will be a great day of fun before leaving LA.

Unforgettable experiences I recommend

How to get to los angeles.

The best way to get to Los Angeles will depend on where you come from and your budget, but there are many options to reach the Californian city.

One of the quickest ways to get to Los Angeles is by plane . If you are travelling from a distant city or another country, you will likely arrive at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), one of the busiest airports in the world, which serves as a major gateway. You will find many domestic and international flights.

If you are flying domestically, you may also consider other airports in the area, such as Burbank Bob Hope Airport (BUR) or Long Beach Airport (LGB).

Another way to get to Los Angeles faster is by car.  The city is accessible via several major highways, including Interstate 5 (I-5) from the north, Interstate 10 (I-10) from the east and Interstate 15 (I-15) from the northeast.

Depending on your starting point, you can also use local roads and highways to reach Los Angeles. Keep in mind that traffic can be heavy, so plan accordingly.

One of the most eco-friendly ways to get to Los Angeles is by train . Amtrak offers train services to Los Angeles from various locations, including the Pacific Surfliner, Southwest Chief and Coast Starlight routes. You will find the main train station, Union Station, in downtown LA.

Finally,  the most affordable option for getting to Los Angeles is by coach . It is a great way to reach the city if you are exploring the USA on a budget, but it may take longer. Long-distance bus services, such as Greyhound and Megabus, operate routes to Los Angeles from various cities.

How to get around Los Angeles

Travel by car .

The best way to get around Los Angeles is  by car , as the city is vast and not easily accessible on foot. You can easily rent one at the airport but try to book it ahead of time.

I recommend using  rentalcar.com  to search and compare which car is best for you. From affordable to luxury, they make it easy to choose and have a great selection of rental agents.

Renting a car will allow you to move freely around the city. However, be aware of the terrible traffic! To make the most of your time, spend each day in a specific area to minimise travel distance – as outlined in this article. In addition, use a GPS to help you save time when navigating the city.

USE PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Using  public transport  is another way to explore Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Metro is easy to use and consists of buses, trains, and subways. And for a better experience, buy a reusable TAP Card, available at vending machines in bus or subway stations.

Even though LA public transit system is not the best, it can still get you around faster than walking. And if you travel between distant neighbourhoods, the Metro Rail will help you avoid congested highways and get directly to your destination.

HOP ON A TAXI OR RIDE-SHARE

Finally, getting around  by taxi or ride-share  is another ideal way to explore Los Angeles. To schedule a pick-up, download the Curb app or use popular ride-sharing services such as Uber or Lyft, which are easily accessible and relatively inexpensive.

However, do not forget that LA traffic gets jammed up quickly during rush hour, so give yourself extra time when travelling and reaching attractions at peak times.

Personal note – My brother had a car when I joined him in LA, which made it easy to move around and helped us maximise our time. Plus, since there were three of us, we could use the carpool lane on the freeways, which made commuting even faster. However, when my brother was busy, my friend and I were using Uber – I did not speak English at the time and could not understand how to use public transport. Therefore, the Uber app was the easiest way to get to our destination.

  • Downtown LA : the best place to stay in Los Angeles for visitors  on a budget or short trips . As a commercial epicentre, it is well-connected and contains everything you need for quick transit.
  • Silver Lake : a popular area  for experiencing local vibes , offering a mix of trendy restaurants, dynamic nightlife, quirky boutiques and independent cafés – perfect for soaking in the local culture.
  • Beverly Hills : for those looking for elegant hotels, high-end boutiques and world-class restaurants, Beverly Hills is the place for you. It is the best area  for a luxurious stay .

  • Venice Beach : if  beach life and bohemian vibes  are what you love, look no further than Venice Beach. With pristine beaches, street performers and art shops, the area is ideal for a peaceful stay.

I suggest using  Booking.com  to search, compare and reserve your accommodation, and if possible, select a place with flexible cancellation – in case of emergency or if things do not go as planned.

And if you can, prioritise an eco-friendly hotel or guesthouse! Use  Bookdifferent  or  Ecobnb  to help you decide.

MY EXPERIENCE

My friend and I booked an Airbnb in advance in the Palms area, which was perfect! A young couple, Kylie and Andrew, welcomed us and were so kind. They gave us lots of advice and made us feel at home. The apartment was also conveniently located near Venice Beach and Santa Monica, which made getting around easy. (Unfortunately, Kylie & Andrew’s Airbnb is no longer available).

Best time to visit Los Angeles

The best times to visit Los Angeles are from  March to May  and  September to November when the temperatures are mild, the air is more breathable, and there are fewer crowds.

Rest assured, Los Angeles enjoys sunny and warm weather all year round! So do not worry too much. The season you choose will mainly depend on the activity you want to do and what you want to experience.

Personal note – I visited Los Angeles at the end of October during Halloween – it was so much fun! However, the weather was still incredibly sunny and warm, which surprised me (I even struggled to hike to Hollywood Sign and nearly collapsed). Regarding the crowds, I did not find them excessive, even in popular places.

Sustainable travel in Los Angeles

Sustainable travel  means exploring the world whilst being aware of your surroundings and having a positive social, environmental and economic impact on the places you visit.

READ MORE: 10 Eco-Friendly Things to Do in Los Angeles

Being a responsible traveller in Los Angeles is possible! Here are some sustainable tips for reducing your carbon footprint:

  • Book direct flights  (which require less fuel than indirect flights)  and  offset your carbon footprint . But, do not use carbon offsetting as a complete solution. Combine it with other sustainable practices, like avoiding single-use plastic on the plane and mindfully packing your suitcase for your green holiday.
  • Select an eco-friendly accommodation . It is not always easy to determine whether a hotel has eco-conscious practices, but try to look on their website for green credentials and ask questions. You can also use  Bookdifferent  or  Ecobnb  to help you decide.
  • Use public transport  as much as possible. Los Angeles transportation network is not the best, but you can easily access the main highlights and attractions with buses, trains or subways. So take advantage of these services to reduce your impact! And if you prefer to rent a car,  choose an electric or hybrid . Not only will you save money on gas, but you will be doing the local air a favour! And if you are staying near the coast, do not hesitate to  rent a bike .
  • Eat at local restaurants  that use produce from the area and emphasise organic and sustainability. It will contribute to the local economy and reduce your carbon footprint by supporting restaurants where food does not come from long distances.
  • Wear reef-safe sunscreen  to protect your skin from the sun, especially during outdoor activities. But be careful about the cream you choose.  Zero-waste and reef-safe sunscreens  are an excellent alternative to chemical creams and are incredibly beneficial for many reasons: they protect the environment by reducing plastic waste and preserve your health by eliminating harmful components.
  • Always respect the local heritage . Treat people and their surroundings with respect. Sustainable travel is not only about the environment but also about the local communities. So, always be respectful, smile and immerse yourself in the local vibe.

5 days in Los Angeles – FAQ

You will find Los Angeles in California, the most populous state in the US and the third most expensive by area. The language is American, and the currency is the dollar.

The answer is, unfortunately, yes! LA is one of the most expensive cities in the world. But, if you are mindful of your expenses and prepare your budget in advance, you will have no problem enjoying this incredible city.

The best times to visit Los Angeles are from March to May and September to November when the temperatures are mild, the air is more breathable, and there are fewer crowds. I went at the end of October during Halloween, which was fun!

I recommend spending 5 to 7 days in Los Angeles to see all the best attractions without rushing. Remember that LA is a vast city, and landmarks are far from each other, so plan accordingly and be OK to adapt your schedule.

The UK is 8 hours ahead of Los Angeles.

Los Angeles Chargers NFL Draft picks 2024: Grades, fits and scouting reports

The Los Angeles Chargers entered the 2024 NFL Draft with nine picks over the three-day draft .

It is a new era for the organization. In February, the Chargers hired Jim Harbaugh as coach and Joe Hortiz as general manager. This draft, starting with the No. 5 pick, will reveal quite a bit about the direction Hortiz and Harbaugh want to take, and that started up front with offensive tackle Joe Alt from Notre Dame.

go-deeper

Final Chargers NFL Draft thoughts: Why the first-round pick will be a telling moment

The roster is pretty close to a blank slate. The Chargers have a quarterback in Justin Herbert . They have a left tackle in Rashawn Slater . They have a trio of edge rusher in Joey Bosa , Khalil Mack and Tuli Tuipulotu . They have safety Derwin James Jr. Beyond that, the Chargers face needs up and down the depth chart . It will be a big lift to get this roster in shape to actually contend. On the flip side, the Chargers are positioned with considerable flexibility in terms of when and how they address needs on both sides of the ball.

Keep coming back here throughout the draft for analysis and grades for each Chargers pick.

No. 5: Joe Alt, OT, Notre Dame

How he fits.

The least surprising move in the draft was Harbaugh and the Chargers going offensive line. Los Angeles could’ve traded the pick, Justin Herbert has nothing at WR — but that offensive line was one of the worst run-blocking outfits in the league last season and protecting Herbert remains a priority. Do not be shocked if Harbaugh and company come back to OL later in this draft — as the Chargers also need a center and are in the middle of a massive culture shift. A terrific starting point for the Harbaugh program. — Nick Baumgardner

Offensive line makes sense

Chargers fans are understandably disappointed that they didn’t draft Malik Nabers or Rome Odunze, but the Chargers have been signaling for a while now that the offensive line would be the pick. Greg Roman has always prioritized the offensive line and devalued receivers. Alt is an absolute freak show with the bend and movement skills of a much smaller lineman. His ability to recover is special, and he’s a physical run blocker at his size. He played left tackle but has the athletic ability and flexibility to switch to the right. He moved around at Notre Dame on some snaps in their unbalanced sets. Trey Pipkins III was average at right tackle but Jim Harbaugh’s goal is to create an elite offensive line with the ability to punish defensive fronts. — Ted Nguyen

Dane Brugler’s analysis

Alt stays light on his feet with the big-man agility, body control and instinctive recovery skills to become a high-level run blocker and above-average pass protector very early in this NFL career. He projects as a first-year, scheme-versatile starter with the pedigree to be a cornerstone player for an NFL franchise (he is Jake Matthews in Nate Solder ’s body).

Jim Harbaugh Responds To Critics On Not Drafting WR: 'Offensive Linemen Are Weapons'

The Los Angeles Chargers really wanted to trade the #5 overall pick in the NFL Draft to move down and collect more assets. Unfortunately for the team and new head coach Jim Harbaugh, they couldn't find the right deal. So, they stayed put and drafted Notre Dame offensive lineman Joe Alt.

That makes a lot of sense for the team. They need to protect franchise quarterback Justin Herbert, who has dealt with myriad injuries over the past two seasons. When healthy, Herbert has one of the most talented right arms in the NFL. But, if he can't stay upright, it doesn't matter.

Still, the Chargers are in salary cap hell and have a lot of holes to fill. They traded wide receiver Keenan Allen to free up some money, but that leaves them with very few offensive playmakers. They lost fellow wide receiver Mike Williams to free agency. Running back Austin Ekeler also left as a free agent.

Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh defended his team taking an offensive lineman, Notre Dame's Joe Alt (pictured), with the #5 overall pick.

(Kirby Lee/USA TODAY Sports)

The Chargers drafted wide receiver Quentin Johnston in the first round last year, but he was mostly terrible in his rookie season. It's fair to say that the team lacks weapons, a major reason they wanted to trade down to acquire more picks. But, as only he can, Jim Harbaugh addressed exactly why they opted for an offensive lineman instead of a skill-position player.

"I know the question is going to come up about weapons," Harbaugh began, "We look at offensive lineman as weapons."

This is the perfect Jim Harbaugh response. Offensive lineman are not "weapons," at least not as people use the term as it relates to football. But, that's what makes the Harbaugh response awesome. He pre-asks himself the question that he knows he's going to get, and then answers it with nonsense.

How is a reporter supposed to follow-up on that!? Answer: they won't. They just let Harbaugh say his thing, and then move on. Perfectly executed deflection and what the Los Angeles media can look forward to for the foreseeable future.

New challenge unlocked: hiking with a newborn. How to keep your baby safe on the trails

• Show more sharing options

Last week, my wife and I embarked on a special outdoor adventure. By the numbers, it wasn’t that impressive — a 2.3-mile, 300-foot “hike” up to the Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook . It took an hour from start to finish. Much of the route was paved. But it was a major milestone for one very important reason: It was our first hike with our newborn daughter, Emma.

In the days before this short but important trip, some pressing questions bounced around my head. Would Emma put up a fight as I wrestled her into the BabyBjörn carrier? Would she wail the whole way up the hill? Would she spit up all over me? (It wouldn’t be the first time.)

A man hikes a trail carrying his newborn in a BabyBjörn

You may occasionally receive promotional content from the Los Angeles Times.

I was also skeptical about how enriching a hike could be for a 2-week-old infant. Emma can barely see. After nine months in the womb, just lying in her crib must feel like visiting another planet — would she even notice the difference between indoors and outdoors?

To calm my nerves, I spoke with Dr. Rebecca Dudovitz, a pediatrician with UCLA Health. I was relieved to learn that babies, even those as young as Emma, appreciate time outside just as much as adults do.

“It’s a great way to stimulate their development with new senses and sounds, smells, things to look at,” said Dudovitz.

A man in a baseball cap and sunglasses carries his newborn in a BabyBjörn while hiking

Outdoor time offers a host of benefits for babies. In addition to sensory stimulation, it exposes them to common allergens, which reduces their risk of developing allergies later in life, and it’s actually safer than spending time in crowded indoor places — they’re less likely to catch a virus from another person. Perhaps most importantly, going outside can calm a fussy newborn (and their exhausted parents).

“It can be a useful strategy, especially at the end of the day when everybody’s tired and cranky,” said Dudovitz.

Dudovitz also gave me a few tips to ensure our hike was a success. Rule No. 1 is to keep babies out of the sun, as a newborn’s skin is sensitive and sunscreen isn’t approved for use until they’re 6 months old. (Long sleeves and a sun hat are required equipment.) She recommends staying away from places with mosquitoes; if you can’t avoid bugs, you can pre-treat baby clothes with Permethrin to ward them off. Finally, pay close attention to heat and cold as babies can’t regulate their temperature as well as adults can (feel your child’s torso to gauge their temperature).

A woman poses for a photo as she is hiking a trail

Armed with that info, my wife, Emma and I headed out for our first hike. It was a perfect Southern California day, the kind that makes you wonder why anyone would choose to live elsewhere. Warm sunshine spilled down from a deep blue sky, and a fresh breeze rolled in from the ocean as we trekked up the hill from the parking lot.

All around us, the chaparral was lush and alive with blossoms. Mounds of bush sunflowers glowed in the afternoon light, and here and there I noticed patches of coast morning glories, their delicate white cups streaked with purple. Amid the blooms, sagebrush branches stood out with their wispy pale green leaves. I touched them as we passed and savored their sweet, earthy scent. When we reached the top of the overlook, we could see for miles in all directions — the Santa Monica Mountains rising in the distance, the broad blue plane of the Pacific Ocean, and the skyscrapers of downtown L.A. poking up to the east. It was beautiful.

What did Emma think of it? Hard to say. She slept the entire time, stirring only when I took off her hat to snap photos. I think she opened her eyes for 30 seconds total. Even so, my wife and I enjoyed the excursion, and I’m calling this inaugural family hike a success. Next time, maybe Emma will be awake to hear, smell, see and feel all of it too.

3 things to do

A person holds and points at a plant with a yellow bloom. Folks in the background observe.

1. ID plants and potluck in Topanga Canyon

Go for an all-levels plant identification stroll in the mountains of Topanga with Herb Club LA . The 2.5-mile walk will last about an hour and is open to everyone (even leashed dogs). Afterward, the group will be holding a “late Earth Day celebration” at the dreamy local Topanga shop the Well Refill for a tea meditation and potluck featuring herbal sodas and vegan chocolate. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothes and appropriate shoes for the hike, and — if they plan to take part in the potluck — to bring vegan dishes and reusable plates, cups and utensils to minimize waste. The event is free (with donations accepted) and kicks off Sunday at 11 a.m. For more information visit eventbrite.com .

2. Bike, walk, skate or scoot in SGV

Ditch the car on Sunday and experience what it’s like to roam freely on five miles of streets in Alhambra, San Gabriel and South Pasadena. Active Streets: Mission-to-Mission , presented by Metro Los Angeles and hosted by San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments (SGVCOG), is a car-free celebration packed with live music performances, pop-up booths from local businesses and community organizations, and free games and activities. Walk, bike, skate or scoot through any part of the route — or conquer the whole thing, if you choose. The free event runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. If you’re a San Gabriel Valley resident, you can borrow a classic GoSGV electric bike for $50 by filling out this form . Active Streets was formerly known as 626 Golden Streets — with the Metro “Gold” line becoming the “L” and then the “A,” the name changed.

3. The Earth Day celebrations continue

Though Earth Day happened on Monday, the L.A. celebrations are still going strong. On Saturday, you’ll find guided nature hikes and storytelling at the Chatsworth Nature Preserve , a seed swap at Barnes Park in Monterey Park and the Teen Climate Fest at Long Beach’s Aquarium of the Pacific . You can also get your gloves dirty on Saturday at the Madrona Marsh in Torrance, which is hosting a habitat restoration event . Pre-registration is required and participants should wear closed-toe shoes and bring sunscreen and water.

The must-read

La Loma bridge.

Here’s a fun idea for getting outside and exploring Los Angeles: Go on a walking tour of the city’s bridges. For The Times, writer Adam Markovitz highlights nine spans all around L.A. that are worth checking out, including quaint walkways over the Venice Canals, the historic Shakespeare Bridge in Los Feliz and the new 6th Street Viaduct over the L.A. River. Whether you’re in it for the architecture or looking for some new views of the city, these bridges won’t disappoint.

More From the Los Angeles Times

Stewards check tourists QR code access outside the main train station in Venice, Italy, Thursday, April 25, 2024. The fragile lagoon city of Venice begins a pilot program Thursday to charge daytrippers a 5 euro entry fee that authorities hope will discourage tourists from arriving on peak days. The daytripper tax is being tested on 29 days through July, mostly weekends and holidays starting with Italy's Liberation Day holiday Thursday. Officials expect some 10,000 people will pay the fee to access the city on the first day, downloading a QR code to prove their payment, while another 70,000 will receive exceptions, for example, because they work in Venice or live in the Veneto region. WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO Mexico Cruises Insider

Mexico is ready for you to explore at any time of year. In general, the weather is best between December and April — there's little rain, and the temperatures are very comfortable. The wet season starts in May and ends in October, while hurricane season (affecting mostly the Caribbean side) starts in June and runs until November.

When you travel to Mexico, one of the best ways to enjoy the country is by immersion. Try the local food, shop the local markets, and choose excursions that allow you to spend time getting to know a specific neighborhood, historic site or natural wonder.

Learn a few phrases in Spanish and speak to waiters, vendors, tour guides and everyday people. Ask about places to eat, the history or the music. Get out of your comfort zone and reach out to the people who know the country best — they can let you know where to go for the best price on that souvenir you're seeking or which beachside spot makes the best margarita.
