Unveiling the Unsung Hero of the '80s: The 1986 GMC Safari Van
When the open road beckons, few vehicles answer the call with as much versatility and understated charm as the 1986 GMC Safari Van. Born in an era of bold designs and automotive innovation, the Safari emerged from General Motors' commitment to providing a multi-purpose vehicle that blended functionality with comfort. Its historical context is rooted in the mid-1980s quest for a family-friendly vehicle that could double as a cargo carrier. A unique fact that might tickle the fancy of enthusiasts is that the Safari, alongside its twin, the Chevrolet Astro, was among the first mid-sized vans to offer all-wheel drive, a feature that now seems commonplace but was a pioneering step back then.
Design and Innovation
The exterior styling of the 1986 GMC Safari Van was a departure from the boxy norms of its time, featuring a slightly more aerodynamic profile that hinted at efficiency and modernity. Inside, passengers were greeted with a no-nonsense cabin, where durability took precedence over luxury. The materials used were built to last, reflecting the van's utilitarian purpose. Technologically, it boasted features like electronic fuel injection and optional rear Dutch doors, which were quite advanced for its time. As for color options, choices ranged from the classic, subdued tones to more vibrant hues, with shades like "Midnight Black" and "Apple Red" often catching buyers' eyes. The most iconic body style was arguably the passenger version, which offered generous space and configurable seating arrangements.
Historical Significance
The Safari's impact on automotive design was subtle yet significant. It demonstrated that a van could be both practical and somewhat stylish, influencing a generation of vehicles that sought to serve families and businesses alike. Its introduction of all-wheel drive in this segment set it apart from contemporaries and paved the way for future models to incorporate this once-exclusive feature.
Performance and Handling
Under the hood, the 1986 GMC Safari Van was no slouch. While it wasn't built for speed, it offered respectable performance metrics for its class, with enough horsepower to handle fully-laden road trips or cargo hauling duties. Handling was what you'd expect from a mid-sized van of the era—solid and reliable rather than sporty. Drivers could expect a smooth ride over bumps and a stable experience on windy roads. Behind the wheel, one would find satisfaction in the van's workhorse-like rumble and the straightforward interaction with its controls.
Ownership Experience
The Safari Van was a chameleon of sorts; it served as a daily driver for families, a dependable work vehicle for tradespeople, and occasionally even found itself decked out for show car status. Its maintenance and reliability were one of its strong suits, with many parts being easy to source and replace by the average owner. This accessibility contributed to its longevity on the road.
In the realm of trivia, the GMC Safari has had its share of spotlight moments—perhaps most notably in film and television where it often played the reliable, if not slightly unglamorous, backdrop character. While it may not have broken speed records, it certainly set benchmarks for endurance and versatility in its class. Criticisms over time have centered on its somewhat thirsty fuel consumption and a design that some felt was too conservative.
Collector's Information
Today, the 1986 GMC Safari Van holds a unique place in collector circles. While not as coveted as some classic cars, its durability and nostalgic appeal have begun to increase its value among enthusiasts. Production numbers were substantial, so rarity isn't a major factor; however, finding one in pristine condition can be challenging. As for value range, well-kept models can fetch anywhere from a few thousand dollars up to perhaps $10,000 or more for exceptionally maintained examples. The market trend seems to show a slow but steady appreciation as these vans become recognized for their historical place in automotive evolution.
The 1986 GMC Safari Van stands as a testament to an era when practicality reigned supreme. It may not have been the flashiest vehicle on the road, but its contribution to the multi-purpose vehicle segment is undeniable. For those who owned one, it likely holds a special place in their memories—as solid and reliable as the day they drove it off the lot. The Safari Van remains an endearing piece of automotive history that continues to charm collectors and enthusiasts alike.

Motor swap From 86 Safari to 2000 Jimmy
- Add to quote
Hey. I'm trying to swap the motor out of a 1986 Safari Van into a 2000 Jimmy. I know there's no crank sensor on the 86. Does anyone know what I will have to do to make the Safari engine work in the Jimmy? Any tips or ideas appreciated.
there's folks here who have the know-how you're looking for, and some may chime in. but since you're really about your jimmy, and happen to be using a safari engine, i'll venture a guess you'll get your best answers in a jimmy environment. https://www.gmtruckclub.com/forums/chevy-blazer-forum-gmc-jimmy.17567/
Thanks for the tip. For the record, the Safari is already dead. It's been sitting up in my friends yard after an accident from 6yrs ago. The motor and trans are A1 tho. My motor in the Jimmy started giving me hell after dying while driving down the interstate. When I tried to recrank it, all it would do is grind on the flexplate. I replaced the starter and flexplate a couple times before I realized my friend that was helping me didn't have the torque converter set right before stabbing the trans in the back of the flexplate. Broke the pump in the trans as well. Once I got a new pump and got it running, it had a sound like someone dropped a bolt off in the motor or something. Then it died due to a fuel pump issue and the timing was off. Replaced the plug on the fuel pump and the cap and rotor on the dizzy. Cranked right up after I realized on that 4.3, the button on the distributor has to be pointing at #6 when #1 is TDC. Not pointing at #1 like most motors. But even tho it cranked it sounded horrible with that squeak/ knock sound it was making. So, I got a bunch of new parts on the Jimmy and hate for them to go to waste. I can salvage most of my $ spent off it but basically need a 4.3 block and heads. Or a 4.3 off another vehicle closer in age to mine. Anyways , thanks for the link.
location? I have a 2004 S-10 engine is good trans is so so. I am in NH
I'm jus south of Memphis.
oh ok too far I have the truck and also an 88 safari the truck is parts only but thr safari needs stuff to fix. we could have made some trades but oh well
the target vehicle is already 23 years old. The right motor will not be more than a few hundred dollars and will be plug and play. Putting a motor that is that much older in a 2000 will end up with endless electrical and sensor issues to resolve that is pretty avoidable. In short, it will very likely cost more money and time to get the 86 engine to work in the 2000 without endless lights on the dash, than to just buy a 2000 engine for a Jimmy. If the goal is to save money, spending it on the front end on something that will match exactly will save a boatload

5 Best & Worst GMC Safari Years (We Checked)
The GMC Safari has had its ups and downs over the years, with various models providing standout features and performance.
Table of Contents
While some years of the Safari delivered reliable service, others faced challenges and attracted some criticism from drivers and experts alike.
This article aims to discuss the best and worst years of the GMC Safari, helping potential buyers make an informed decision when looking to purchase this versatile minivan.
The Best Year for GMC Safari
One of the standout years for the GMC Safari was 2003.
This model received positive reviews for its reliability and durability. Many owners reported putting well over 200,000 miles on the vehicle with minimal maintenance required.
The 2003 GMC Safari was available in both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations, catering to different needs and preferences.
The 2003 Safari came with a 4.3L V6 engine, offering a good balance of power and fuel efficiency, which was especially impressive for its time. This engine was paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission that provided a smooth driving experience and responsive handling.
In terms of interior features, the 2003 GMC Safari provided ample space for passengers and cargo, as well as various seating configurations to suit different requirements. These features, along with the overall comfortable design, made it suitable for families and businesses alike.
Safety features were also a strong focus in the 2003 model year, with standard equipment such as 4-wheel disc brakes with ABS, driver and passenger airbags, and daytime running lights. These safety enhancements provided added peace of mind for drivers and passengers on their journeys.

The 2nd Best Year
The 2001 GMC Safari deserves recognition as the second-best model year for this classic van. While it didn’t receive quite as many accolades as later years, this model still offers reliability and solid performance.
Shoppers can expect to find features such as:
- A potent 4.3L V6 engine delivering 190 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque
- A smooth-shifting 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive
- A maximum tow rating of 5,800 pounds, allowing for versatile hauling capabilities
Despite a few minor drawbacks, the 2001 GMC Safari excelled in a number of areas. With more than respectable fuel economy, owners could expect to achieve up to 16 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway—a notable perk for those prioritizing efficiency.
Safety-wise, this model year showcased improvements over previous years. Although not considered exceptional, it scored better in crash tests compared to earlier models. Standard safety features included antilock brakes, and GM’s Passlock theft-deterrent system provided an added layer of protection.
One thing the 2001 Safari truly excelled in was cargo space. With a cavernous interior, owners could easily accommodate up to 170.4 cubic feet of luggage, making the van a top choice for families or those embarking on long road trips.
While not as highly praised as newer models, this particular year remains a noteworthy option and good value for used car shoppers looking for reliability and performance to boot.

Other Good Years
As we dive into the GMC Safari’s history, let’s take a look at some other good years for this popular van.
Here’s a list of additional standout years, with brief explanations as to what made them great:
- 2004 GMC Safari : This model year continued to offer the reliable 4.3-liter V6 engine, and it maintained a strong reputation for durability and dependability. Additionally, the 2004 Safari featured comfortable seating and ample cargo space, providing a versatile option for both families and businesses.
- 2005 GMC Safari : As the final production year for the Safari, the 2005 model continued to deliver on the strengths of its predecessors. With its trusty V6 engine and spacious interior, this model remained a practical choice for those in search of a reliable van.
These GMC Safari model years were known for their solid performance and dependability, ensuring that they remain an excellent choice for anyone considering a robust and versatile vehicle.
Problematic Year for GMC Safari
The 1996 GMC Safari, while generally a reliable vehicle, has been associated with certain common issues that potential owners or current owners should be aware of.
One of the most reported problems for this model year revolves around the fuel system. Some owners have experienced fuel pump failure, which can lead to the vehicle stalling or not starting at all. The issue typically emerges after a significant mileage, and the only solution is to replace the fuel pump, which can be a relatively expensive repair.
Engine problems are another area of concern for the 1996 GMC Safari.
These include issues like the “Check Engine” light frequently coming on, misfiring, or engine stalling. In several cases, these problems were traced back to issues with the ignition system, such as a faulty ignition coil or a worn-out distributor cap and rotor. Fixing these problems typically involves replacing the faulty components, which, while not overly expensive, can add to maintenance costs over time.
Transmission failures have also been reported with this model, some occurring at relatively low mileages for a transmission issue.
Transmission replacement or rebuild is a significant expense and can be quite a headache for the vehicle’s owner. Symptoms of a failing transmission can include difficulty shifting gears, the transmission slipping out of gear, or a whining or humming noise. If these symptoms are experienced, it is crucial to get the vehicle to a mechanic as soon as possible to prevent further damage.
The 1996 GMC Safari has also had issues with the power door locks not working correctly, which, while less serious than engine or transmission issues, is still a significant inconvenience for owners. The cause is usually a faulty door lock actuator that needs to be replaced.
Lastly, some owners have reported issues with the van’s exterior lighting.
These problems range from the headlights going out intermittently to the brake lights not functioning correctly, posing a potential safety risk.
It’s important to note that while these issues have been reported, they do not affect every 1996 GMC Safari.
Many owners have had minimal problems and have found the van to be reliable. However, if you’re considering purchasing a used 1996 GMC Safari, or if you’re a current owner experiencing unexplained issues, these are areas you might want to investigate.
Remember, regular maintenance and prompt attention to any problems that arise can go a long way toward extending the life of any vehicle.

Your spark plug wires or ignition cables carry power from your vehicle's distributor or coil to the spark plugs. Spark plug wires feature a boot at each end that connects to the coil, distributor, or spark plug, and has an insulated conductive core to safely carry the current without arcing. Spark plug wires are typically routed using looms or brackets to prevent them from contacting any metal surfaces, as this can cause wear and lead to grounding that can prevent ignition. Over time, spark plug wires and boots may be damaged by heat or with regular use, and this may cause poor conductivity or a complete lack of power reaching the spark plugs. If you're not getting spark to one or more cylinders, this could lead to misfires and rough engine operation that may point to a problem with one or more spark plug wires. When this occurs, the first step is often to perform a spark test to determine if the spark plug wire is to blame, or if the spark plug is damaged or no longer working as it should. It's usually recommended that you change your spark plug wires when you replace your spark plugs to ensure a complete tune-up and the best possible ignition system performance. Signs that you may need spark plugs and wires include an active Check Engine light , erratic idle, engine misfires , poor acceleration, reduced fuel efficiency, and increased emissions. Replacing your spark plugs and wires may not only restore your vehicle's performance but can also improve your fuel economy. O'Reilly Auto Parts carries replacement ignition wire sets, performance spark plug sets, new spark plugs, and other ignition system parts to help you make a complete repair.
