This blog is a complete and comprehensive travel guide for planning an Andaman trip. This Andaman Travel Guide has tips for best places to visit in Andaman, best things to do and other important travel information. Read on to know more.

Andaman is a wonder of nature. This archipelago provides a lot of attractions for tourists and backpackers alike. Andaman has some of the best beaches, most virgin natural trails and mesmerising sunsets. The place also has an interesting history and all these reasons were enough for us to plan an Andaman trip.

Radhanagar Beach_Havelock Island

We had always been keener on visiting the mountains. So Andaman, the sea and beaches were quite fresh and lovely for us.

About Andaman & Nicobar Island

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands comprises 572 islands that lie at the juncture of the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea. Out of these 572 islands, only about 38 are inhabited. The Andaman group is separated from the Nicobar group by a 150 km wide channel known as the Ten Degree Channel.

The Andaman group has 325 islands while the Nicobar group has only 24 islands. North, middle and South Andaman are collectively known as the Great Andaman. The islands include Landfall Island, Interview Island, the Sentinel Islands, Ritchie’s Archipelago, Rutland Island and Little Andaman in the south, which is separated from the Nicobar group of islands by the Ten Degree Channel.

The main islands of the Nicobar group are Car Nicobar in the North, Camorta, Katchall and Nancowry in the centre and Great Nicobar in the south.

Aerial view of Andaman from flight

Interestingly, Andaman Island is closer to Myanmar (190 km) and Sumatra (150 km) in Indonesia than it is to mainland India (almost 1200 km).

The islands are quite unexplored mainly due to the distance and accessibility from the mainland. And that is where the beauty of the place lies.

History of Andaman

Usually, before visiting any place, we look at the history of the place. It helps us to understand the place and people better. Andaman trip was no exception. While delving into the history of the place, I did find out some interesting facts.

That Andaman was a British penal settlement in the colonial era is known to all, but the place seems to have historic evidence older than that period.

  • It is not actually known when the first inhabitants came to this group of islands. It is believed that Andaman had a population over 30,000 years ago. The earliest archaeological evidence dates back to 2,200 years ago.
  • In between 1014 to 1042 AD, King Rajendra Chola I of the Chola Dynasty was the first one to colonize these islands and formed a naval base to launch expeditions against the Sriwijaya Empire of Indonesia.
  • Later the islands came under Danish East India Company and were under them till 1868. Finally, these islands were purchased by the British East India Company in 1869 and they later formed a penal settlement in these islands.

Top Places to visit in Andaman Trip

The island had markets, bakery, stores, workshop, water distillation plant, church, tennis court, printing press, secretariat, hospital, cemetery, open air theatre and others. Today, everything has disappeared except some old dilapidated buildings, which housed some of these landmarks.

Usually, North Bay Island and Ross Island tour is done together in a day .

3. Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep)

Radhanagar Beach_Havelock Island

Havelock Island is the most popular island and also receives the highest footfall of tourists and will be a highlight of your Andaman trip. Havelock boasts of beautiful and pristine beaches, turquoise sea and some of the best diving sites in South Asia.

Radhanagar Beach is considered one of the most beautiful beaches of Asia. You can rent a motorbike or scooty like we did and explore the island. We recommend you to spend at least 2 nights at Havelock Island. Havelock Island is also a backpackers’ delight.

Things to do in Havelock Island

  • Visit and enjoy a great time on the beautiful beaches of Havelock Island. Visit the Radhanagar Beach during the sunset and Kalapathar beach during the sunrise. Other beaches are Vijaynagar beach and Govindnagar Beach.
  • Go for scuba diving. As already mentioned Havelock has some of the best diving sites in South Asia. It is better to take a dive from the diving schools that are near Beach no 3 & 4.
  • Laze around the Elephant Beach. Elephant Beach is about 20 minutes boat ride from Havelock Island. With white sand and beautiful coral reefs, the place is an absolute winner. Also, you can indulge in water sports like snorkelling, sea walk and glass-bottom boat ride here.
  • You can also trek to the Elephant Beach from Radhanagar village.

Planning to visit Havelock Island? Here is a complete Guide to Havelock Island with all the details.

4. Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep)

Natural Bridge_Neil Island_Shaheed Dweep

This beautiful island is a backpacker’s paradise. The turquoise blue sea waters and golden sandy beaches are a treat to the eyes. Apart from the pristine beaches, there is also a natural bridge at Neil Island. Shaheed Dweep or Neil Island is a small island and you can explore the entire island in a day on a two-wheeler. Like in Havelock, you can hire a motorbike or scooty here too and explore the island.

A visit to Neil Island or Shaheed Dweep can be done in a day trip, but staying for a night is highly recommended. Neil Island was our favourite place in the entire Andaman trip.

Places to visit in Neil Island

Visit the beautiful beaches of Neil – Bharatpur Beach, Sitapur Beach, Laxmanpur Beach and the natural Beach.

At Bharatpur Beach, you will find a diving centre. You can go scuba diving, glass bottom boat ride and snorkeling here as well.

5. Baratang Island

Baratang Island_Andaman

Baratang Island is situated between South and Middle Island. It has beautiful beaches, mangrove creeks, limestone caves and mud volcanoes. Baratang Island is about 100 km from Port Blair and it takes almost 5 hours to reach and the conditions of the road are quite poor. We are not discouraging, but visit this place only if you like to explore the unknown and are not intimidated by long hours and poor conditions of the journey.

Please note that you will need a permit to visit the limestone caves.

6. Diglipur and North Andaman

Ross and Smith Island

This is perhaps the best-kept secret of Andaman trip. North Andaman is yet an unexplored region of the island. It takes almost 12 hours to reach Diglipur by road from Port Blair. But once you are there, you will be mesmerised by the virgin beauty of the place.

Places to visit in Diglipur

Ross and Smith Island

Ross & Smith islands are actually two islands – Ross & Smith joined together by a sand bar to make a single group of islands. The water is crystal clear and the sand bar appears during low tide. During the high tide, the sand bar disappears leaving a trail of water between the two islands.

Lamiya Bay Beach: Lamiya Bay beach marks the foothill of the Saddle Peak, the highest peak in North Andaman.

Mud Volcano at Shyamnagar & Limestone cave at Diglipur: Like in Baratang, you will see mud volcanoes in Shyamnagar in North Andaman. Limestone caves in Diglipur are also known as Alfred caves and located near Ramnagar Beach.

How to reach andaman.

Port Blair is the gateway to Andaman. You can reach Port Blair either by flight or ship.

By Air: You will get flights to Andaman from all the major cities of India.

By Ship: If you wish to experience the life at the seas, then you can reach Port Blair by ships that are available from Kolkata, Chennai and Vishakapatnam. It usually takes 4 days to reach Port Blair.

Flights are thus the easiest and convenient option of getting to Andaman.

Government Ferry at Andaman

Island Hopping: How to get around on an Andaman Trip?

Once you are at Andaman, you cannot escape island hopping. There are two types of trips.

Islands for Day Trips

These islands are nearer to Port Blair and you can make a day trip to these islands. Simply head towards the Aberdeen Jetty and pick up an Andaman tour packages operator to make your bookings instantly for  Andaman Honeymoon Packages  as well. Your hotels can also do the bookings for you. Ross Island, North Bay Island, Jolly Buoy Islands are some of these islands where you can make a day trip.

Islands for Night Stay

If you want to visit the Havelock and Neil Island, then you have to go to the Phoenix Bay Jetty . There are Government boats as well as private operators. You cannot pre-book in a government boat. You have to stand in a queue in the morning to book your tickets. Among the private operators, Makruzz is the best.

We had travelled in both the government ships and Makruzz. Very obviously, Makruzz is faster than the government counterparts, but what I liked in the government ferry is that you can simply roam about everywhere in the ferry and can enjoy on the deck watching the endless blue seas.

Makruzz cruise_Andaman Island Hopping

How to get around within the islands?

You can hire 2 wheelers at both Havelock and Neil Island to explore the places. Also, you can get cabs if you travelling greater distances. We had hired a scooty at both Havelock and Neil Island to move around.

Some amazing things to do in Andaman

Water sports in andaman.

Water sports at Andaman_Things to do in Andaman

Andaman is heaven for water sports. Bestowed with beautiful coral reefs and clear waters, the archipelago boasts of the best underwater activities. You can go scuba diving, snorkelling and sea walking. For water sports like jet ski ride, banana boat etc, North Bay Island is a good place. You can also do scuba diving and snorkelling here. But we would recommend you to scuba dive either in Havelock Island or Neil Island.

Scuba Diving in Andaman

scuba diving experience in Andaman

Andaman has some of the best diving sites in the country and this we have been reiterating for long. Well, it is not without reason, because the beautiful coral reefs and marine life is simply amazing. For Scuba Diving in Andaman , we will recommend Havelock and Neil Island.

If you are doing scuba at Havelock, don’t do it at Elephant Beach, but do it at the diving sites near Beach No. 3 & 4. There are a number of operators and you can take a pick. We had done with Barefoot Scuba in Andaman. For Scuba diving, don’t forget to take the guidance of certified PADI instructors.

Where to stay in Andaman?

Places to stay in Havelock_Andaman

Andaman has plenty of options for hotels and in all possible budgets. For your trip to Andaman, we would recommend you to stop for the night at Port Blair and Havelock Island. If time permits, spend one night at Neil Island too. Both Port Blair and Havelock has a lot of options. Diglipur and North Andaman have relatively lesser options. Sio it would not be a bad idea to book beforehand.

Camping at the beaches is not allowed at Andaman unless the resorts arrange it with permission.

What to eat in Andaman?

While at Andaman, it will be a sin not to try the seafood. At Havelock, you will find some great food at Barefoot Bar and Restaurant, Full Moon Café, Black Beard’s Bistro, Red Snapper and Anju-Coco Resto. Neil Island has very limited options in regards to food.

Things to eat at Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep)

Is any permit required for Andaman Trip?

Indian nationals do not require a permit for visit to Andaman.

For Foreign Nationals

All foreign nationals required a RAP (Restricted Area Permit) to visit the Andaman Nicobar Islands, which is easily available on arrival at Port Blair by flight or ship from the Immigration Authorities for 30 days subject to availability of valid visa. This is extendable for another 15 days in certain cases with permission and the delegated authority to extend permission is the Superintendent of Police, FRO/CID, Port Blair.

The Restricted Area Permit can also be obtained from the Indian Missions overseas and also from the Foreigners Registration Offices at New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata and from the Immigration Authorities at the Airport of New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata.

Recently, to promote tourism in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, foreign tourists will not require RAP for visiting the following 30 Islands in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands:

(1) East Island (2) North Andaman (3) Smith Island (4) Curfew Island (5) Stewart Island (6) Landfall Island (7) Aves Island (8) Middle Andaman (9) Long Island (10) Strait Island (11) North Passage (12) Baratang (13) South Andaman (14) Havelock Island or Swaraj Dweep (15) Neil Island or Shaheed Dweep (16) Flat Bay (17) North Sentinel Island (18) Little Andaman (19) Chowra (20) Tillang Chong Island (21) Teressa (22) Katchal (23)Nancowry (24) Kamorta (25) Pulomilo (26) Great Nicobar (27) Little Nicobar(28) Narcondum Island (29) Interview Island and (30) Viper Island (Day visit only).

Visiting the tribal areas is strictly forbidden for both Indians and foreigners. So if anyone is trying to sell such Andaman trip, refuse.

Andaman and Nicobar Island

What is the best time to visit Andaman?

Andaman can be visited throughout the year. However, the best season of the island is from mid-November to early March. This is considered to be the best season to visit Andaman.

Network and wifi

Although you will get mobile services, the data connection at Andaman is very poor. Internet and wifi services are quite bad here. Both Neil and Havelock Islands had very poor mobile network connection also. So enjoy the place without internet and wifi. We were quite happy to spend a few days without these so-called “essentials”.

ATMs in Andaman

You will find a number of ATMs in Port Blair. Havelock too has a few ATMs near Beach No 1 or the Jetty. There are a couple of ATMs in both Neil Island and Diglipur. It is better to carry cash with you while travelling to Neil and Diglipur.

Beaches in Andaman

Is it safe to travel in Andaman?

Yes, Andaman is quite safe to travel. The island is quite a peaceful place with not many instances of problems of safety. Of late, the news of the death Christian missionary in North Sentinel Island has been going around. Be aware that a few aboriginal tribes have their home in the remote islands of Andaman & Nicobar and they have kept themselves distant from the civilization. They do not take intrusion in their land and life lightly. So as travellers, we would request you not to visit the tribal areas without a guide. Also, most of the tribal areas are strictly forbidden for both Indians and foreigners.

Secondly, do keep in mind about the safety measures at the sea. Do not go out to swim all alone even if you are a great swimmer. Also please adhere to your instructor or trainer while scuba diving and snorkeling. Stay safe and have a great trip.

I wonder if it’s necessary to book flights from Chennai to Port Blair in advance (December/January) or are there always some seats left?

Hey Alex, thanks for reading our blog. We usually book our flight tickets 1 to 2 weeks in advance (not months!). But usually and hopefully, you will get tickets from Chennai at shorter notice as well. However, prices can be steeper at short notice. Hope this helps. Travel guide: top things to do & see, hotel & resorts, restaurants & cafes and more, table of content, travel guide to the andaman and nicobar islands.

Andaman is not just one breathtaking island destination, but a group of 572 gorgeous islands in the Bay of Bengal. With around 37 inhabited islands, each island has something unique to offer. What these islands do have in common though are miles and miles of stunning beaches, endless greenery, amazing hidden treasures and plenty of mouth-watering seafood.

Simply put, the Andamans is a tropical paradise that’s straight out of a postcard. Relaxing beach strolls, the best scuba-diving spots in all of India, lovely historical sites and exotic marine life are all yours to enjoy (responsibly, of course)!

Our handy guide here is going to help you understand the Andaman islands in-depth before you travel here and take-in the Andaman beauty first-hand.

How to Reach the Top Spots in the Andamans?

andaman and nicobar travel brochure

1 . Port Blair

Being the capital of Andaman, Port Blair is connected to all the other islands via a ferry network. This means you can take a ferry from Port Blair and visit other islands like Havelock, Neil Island, Long Island and Little Andaman. Besides being your first destination on Andaman Island, Port Blair also has some really fascinating things-to-do like Corbyn’s Cove Beach, Cellular Jail, Ross Island and Samudrika Marine Museum.

The best way to reach Port Blair is either by flight (daily flights are available from all major cities) or by ship (passenger ships can be taken from Kolkata or  Chennai).

Check out our detailed guide to Port Blair .

2 . Havelock Island

Havelock is by far the most sought-after island on the Andaman Islands. Wrapped in corals, blue waters, and white powdery sand, Havelock is famous for its unending greenery, stunning beaches, cute cafes and water activities like scuba diving, snorkeling, jet-skiing, and the likes of these.

Private and government ferries operate daily between Port Blair and Havelock as well as Neil and Havelock. The air-conditioned private ferries take about 1.5 hours from Port Blair and an hour from Neil Island.

Check out our detailed guide to Havelock Island .

3 . Neil Island

Often known as the sister island to Havelock, Neil island is home to coconut palms, turquoise waters, tropical forests, beautiful corals and exquisite beaches. This little paradise is perfect for those who want to take it easy and unwind all the way. It has a dreamy island-village vibe to it and is great to explore on a bicycle.

The easiest way to reach Neil Island is by hopping on a government or a private ferry. It is about 1.5 hours from Port Blair and about 1 hour from Havelock.

Check out our detailed guide to Neil Island .

4 . Ross Island

It is a tiny island that is full of history, old ruins, amazing wildlife and mesmerizing visuals. This island is a popular tourist spot that is not only rich in natural beauty but it also holds a lot of intriguing stories from the colonial era. It has a stunning light and sound show (with a voice-over by Amitabh Bachhan) that will take you through the British Colonial era and its impact on the Andaman Islands.

Ross Island is 2km away from Port Blair and can be easily reached by a short boat ride from Aberdeen Jetty which takes around 15 minutes. In fact, you can see Ross Island from Port Blair.

Check out our detailed guide to Ross Island .

5 . North Andaman

North Andaman is known for its untouched beauty, lush forests, pristine beaches and turtle nesting sites. Top places to visit in North Andaman include Rangat , Baratang , Diglipur , Mayabunder and the Ross & Smith Islands .

Ferries sail to these spots and the most updated information can be obtained from the government ferry ticketing office. The most common travel option is road. Private and government buses, as well as rental car services, are available for the same.

Language And Demography Of Andamans

Most people on the Andaman speak Hindi or Bengali, but Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam are also common. English is also understood and spoken by the vast majority.

Roughly 24 of the 300 Andaman Islands support human settlements, while only 12 of the Nicobar Islands are populated.

More than two-thirds of the people of the Andaman Islands are Hindu; Christians make up about one-fifth of the population and Muslims less than one-tenth.

What’s The History of the Andamans?

A major chunk of the known history dates back to the post-colonial period beginning with the Danish settlers of the Danish East India Company, followed by the British using the islands as a penal colony in the 19th century.

With the end of British rule, the islands broke free from their shackles and are now part of the union territories of India.

Some Useful Information for Tourists Before Traveling

  • For Indian Tourists, traveling to the Andamans is very similar to traveling to any other state in the country. There is no requirement for a passport, visa, or any other permission. You can stay in permitted areas as long as you wish.
  • For Foreign Tourists, a passport is required along with the Indian visa. The Restricted Area Permit (RAP) is not required anymore for most foreign nationals. For citizens of Afghanistan, Myanmar, China, and Pakistan the RAP is still required.
  • You will find a few ATMs in Port Blair and very less in Havelock, Neil Island and Diglipur so it is essential to also carry cash with you to be well prepared.
  • Andamans is also home to the aboriginal tribes of the islands, who do not want intrusion in their land and life. So, it is advised not to mingle with them in order to respect their space and unintentionally, transmit any kind of disease to them that they’re not immune to.
  • Corals are a huge part of the islands, and for their upkeep & growth, it is highly essential to not damage or unknowingly hurt them while snorkeling and diving. There might also be a lot of poisonous fish and corals in the water so avoid touching them.
  • Be an early riser and make the most of the morning glow. Andamans has some of the nicest sunrises!

All of India has standard 220 Volts with sockets mixed between 3 round pins. While some sockets also take the two round pin plugs, to avoid confusion or disappointment, we suggest guests bring at least one travel adapter.

The whole of India falls under the same time zone so the local time is GMT + 5½ hours throughout the country, all year round. The Andamans are much closer to Thailand than India which means life in the Andamans happens a little bit earlier in the day, to make use of the day light hours.

  • Andaman Islands is an Indian territory. So do I use Indian Currency? Yes. Indian Rupee is used in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. You can exchange currency at the airport, from the banks or currency dealers. Also, you can withdraw Indian Rupees from the ATMs there.
  • Are there any dangerous animals in the Andamans? As such there are no dangerous predatory animals in the forests of the Andamans. So do not come here expecting to see tigers or lions. The forests here are inhabited by animals like wild boar, spotted deer, civet cat as well as numerous species of birds and butterflies. The vast forest canopy provides home to many different species of reptiles as well. Snakes both poisonous and harmless can be seen in the Andamans. Monitor lizards too inhabit these islands and the mangrove creeks provide shelter to ‘salties’ or salt water crocodiles. Tourists are advised to pay attention to sign boards posted on beaches as well as watch their step if walking through dense jungle or mangrove areas.
  • Can I make international calls and access the internet while in Andaman Islands? International dialing is available from most major hotels and ISTD booths in the markets. To make an international call, dial 00 followed by the Country Code followed by the Area Code followed by the Phone Number. Services tend to be reliable. Internet is available, though not as widely as in many other tourist areas and the connection is reputed to be very slow, but there is hope that things will improve in the next season. Roaming mobile signal is available in Port Blair but may be erratic on other islands. If you are planning to buy a new SIM card, we suggest you opt for BSNL as it has the best connectivity on the Andaman & Nicobar islands.
  • Helicopter services are available around Andaman. But tickets are not available for tourists.  Click here for details
  • Can I take sea-planes around Andaman? Sea-planes are not functional in Andamans as of now. These were extremely popular in the past but for the last 3 years, their services were stopped. We do not know when sea-planes will be operational in the future.
  • For Indians:  No passport/visa/permission is required. They can stay in permitted areas for as long as they want.
  • For Foreigners:  A passport is required with an Indian Visa to enter India. This is also applicable to foreigners entering Andaman and Nicobar Islands directly from a charter/private yachts. Additionally, a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) is also required which can be availed on arrival to  Port Blair  from the Immigration counter at the airport or, embarkation of ships at the sea-port. RAP is issued for a 30 day visit to the islands, and is extendable up to 15 more days. Tickets can be rescheduled in Port Blair itself from the respective airline offices.
  • How do I extend my visa in Andaman ? Most foreigners arriving at Port Blair are given a 30 day permit. Closer to the time of expiry (about 3 days ahead) this permit can be extended by another 15 days. This extension can be done either at the police station on  Havelock  or at the Immigration Office in Port Blair, and you will need to show a confirmed return ticket (for the journey within the next 15 days) in order to get this extension. Please note that it may not always be possible to get this extension in a few hours and you may need to stay overnight to obtain the extension if you are applying in Port Blair. It is rare that tourists are given less than 30 days on the permit. However it does happen to a few and it is recommended that you check the expiry of the RAP when the official hands it to you just in case it has been given only for a few days.Diplomats are usually not given the full 30 days and usually get between a week and 15 days.

  • How do I obtain a visa to Andaman? Andaman is a part of India. Thus, a visa for India is valid for the Andaman and Nicobar islands as well and is required for most foreign nationals. The visas are obtainable at the Indian missions, consulates and high commissions overseas. They are valid for the period issued and range from a 15 day period to up to a six month period for tourists. They are valid from the date of issue and it is wise to start travel as soon as the visa is obtained to take advantage of the entire period of visa validity. Once obtained, visas can be extended in India.
  • How expensive are meals in Andaman? The price of a meal depends entirely on where you eat and what you order. A nice quaint restaurant will cost you between Rs.300 to Rs.500 per person depending on what is ordered. Eating at the local village market will be much cheaper and most Andaman islands have a number of small eateries run by locals that work out easy on the pocket. Sea food is more expensive in the Andamans compared to the mainland due to heavy demand and less supply.
  • How long does it take to reach Andamans? A flight from Kolkata/Chennai takes two hours, while the one from Delhi takes about five hours. Ships take as long as 50 hours (3-4 days roughly).
  • Is imported alcohol available on the Andaman Islands? Although alcohol is available in Andaman & Nicobar islands, availability of imported alcohol is extremely limited. Except for a few IMFL (Indian Made Foreign Liquor) bottles, the alcohol availability is restricted to mostly Indian brands. Black Label, Black & White, Bacardi, Smirnoff and Kingfisher beer are some of the brands that are available easily.
  • Is is safe/secure to travel to the Andamans? The quantum of tourist inflow to the Andaman & Nicobar islands is a testimony of how safe tourists feel in the islands. These islands are one of the safest places to live/travel in the country.
  • Is there any nightlife in Andamans? Although many hotels in Port Blair and other developed islands have hotels and resorts that offer a bar, the night life concept has not really caught on in these islands. You will not encounter loud music, disco lights or parties here on a regular basis. Nights are usually quiet and most people get to bed soon to wake early and make maximum use of the day light hours. An exception however is during Christmas and New Year on popular tourist islands like Havelock and Neil where you will find parties going late into the night, loud music and a lot of dancing.
  • What festivals do the local population celebrate in the Andamans? Given the fact that the Andamans has a mix of different religions, almost all festivals celebrated in mainland India including but not limited to Christmas, New Year, Diwali, Eid and Easter are celebrated here. However, the biggest festival here is the ‘Durga Pooja’ due to the number of Bengalis on the Andaman & Nicobar islands.
  • What is the religious stance in the Andamans? India has a very mixed religious history and a reputation for religious tolerance. Hinduism is by far the most popular religion in the Andaman & Nicobar islands followed by Christianity and then Islam. Other religions that make up the total include Sikhism and Buddhism. Even in the Andaman Islands, there is quite a large mix, and while the Hindu festivals are the most celebrated ones, around Christmas time you will see small processions with Santa Claus’ and followers.
  • What is the position regarding use of drugs in the Andamans? Drugs are absolutely illegal in Andaman & Nicobar islands with severe penalties if caught in possession of even minute quantities.
  • What type of behaviour & etiquette can I expect from the locals on the main Andaman Islands? The Andamans are a very relaxed place so the rules are simple as well. Act with respect and decorum, dress appropriately (especially away from the beach), and as anywhere, always ask permission before taking photographs of the local population. A beach destination does not mean that the locals are used to seeing women in revealing A beach destination does not mean that the locals are used to seeing women in revealing swimwear. Please be sensitive to the traditions of the locals and cover up when in areas where locals are present like jetty areas and village markets. Having said that, we would like to stress that the Andamans is a remote place and although the people are casual, one should not expect the kind of comfort or the level of service that is expected of a hotel/resort in mainland India.
  • Will I find vegetarian food in Andaman? Andaman is not known for its vegetarian cuisine but with the inflow of tourists, vegetarian food has become easily available. So YES, if you are a vegetarian travelling to the Andamans, you need not worry. In fact, there are a few vegetarian restaurants we recommend. You can see one of the most famous vegetarian restaurants in Port Blair  here .
  • How safe is travelling to Great Nicobar? Travelling to Great Nicobar by ship or helicopter is very safe. These are both routes that are often traversed by government officials as well as researchers coming to the island for research.

Ross Island is ideally a two part trip, the morning to evening portion includes going around the island looking at the ruins from the era of the British and Japanese rule. the late evening portion includes a spectacular sound, light & video show (yes you read it correctly!!) which has been created specially for Ross island by Revathi (the actress)

This is a over hyped, and not worth the time and money spent to reach here. It used to be called the “Paris of the East” when the British settled here. But everything is destroyed now.

The only good place here is a beach that is on the other side. You will need to climb down and up a lot of steps to get there.

It was a perfect location for family fun, the erstwhile Ross Island has all the history of a mini Paris, albeit at the cost of all Indian labour and is an example of the British opulence over poverty stricken India. Perfect for taking pics and the picturesque light house was delightful. We took the buggy as we were a large family with kids. There are deer and peacocks too.

I booked a tour package for Andamans for 3 people. Our tour operator was Eternal Andamans. We booked a 4 day Luxury package covering Port Blair, Havelock and Neil island. On every point it has not only met with our expectations but also exceeded it. ‍ Cost : Reasonable cost without compromising on Quality at all. ‍ Transport : A spacious car for just the 3 of us was arranged by the tour operator. Xylo XUV, Ford Figo were deployed solely for our transportation. It felt really nice! Cruise tickets (hefty fees) were covered under the package. ‍ Accomodation : Eternal Andamans provided best in class luxurious hotels.
I have traveled Andaman with family in Sep 2019. Eternal Andaman is a wonderful tour operator with friendly people, they take limited tourists in a week. We made a customized package with the information we gathered online, made sure every hour is well spent in Andaman, all thanks to Sandip and his team. Surprisingly I got some money returned from Eternal Andaman guys as they couldn't get promised cruise tickets mentioned in the quotation (I got different cruise which is also good). ‍ I have traveled earlier also but never seen any operator returning money due to booking different hotel/transport than promised one, this is rare. Overall we had a memorable trip :) :)

Andaman and Nicobar Islands Tourism And Travel Guide

If you’re craving for some sun, sand and some much needed relaxation, tourism in Andaman and Nicobar is exactly what you need. For those craving some action, there are numerous water sports at the islands which offer licensed courses in snorkeling and deep sea diving. The archipelago consists of close to 600 islands lying at the juncture of the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea. Out of these only 38 are inhabited and only 9 among them are accessible to tourists. Do keep in mind that foreign nationals would require a Restricted Area permit to visit these islands. The same can be attained on arrival if travelling via air and has to be done beforehand if arriving by sea.

Apart from its beautiful beaches and water sports, Andaman and Nicobar Islands have a history of colonial occupation by the Danish, Austrians and the British. The islands became well known as the most stringent cellular jail during the British Raj, called Kaala Pani; a prisoner sentenced to the Andaman cellular jail was as good as dead. Today, the cellular jail is a docile tourist destination. Find about that and much more in this travel guide of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

How to Reach Andaman & Nicobar

How to Reach Andaman & Nicobar: Andaman and Nicobar Islands Tourism And Travel Guide

Despite its geography and location, Andaman and Nicobar is well connected with the rest of India as well as neighbouring countries of Indonesia, Malaysia , Sri Lanka , and others.

Veer Savarkar airport at Port Blair has direct flights to all major metropolitan cities of India. Though it does not have any direct international flights, the isles can be easily accessed from any of India's metropolises - Delhi , Mumbai , Chennai , Kolkata , Bengaluru , etc.

While the journey to Andaman and Nicobar will be a long one via maritime routes, it is still an experience that some travellers would want to check off their bucket lists. While a ship from Kolkata would take around 66 hours to reach the islands, ships from Chennai would take about 60 hours while from Vizag (Vishakhapatnam) would take up to 56 hours. This route though longer is more suited for the adventurous and those on a shoestring budget.

Things to do in Andaman & Nicobar

Things to do in Andaman & Nicobar: Andaman and Nicobar Islands Tourism And Travel Guide

Cellular Jail:

Today a National Memorial monument, the central jail was used during the British Raj to exile political prisoners. Made in a way that there was no way for a cell inmate to see any other human, the sentence to Kaala pani was equivalent to a death sentence, albeit, a slower and more torturous one. The museum today has photographs of inmates and will take you through a journey of our freedom struggle.

Havelock Island:

The largest island of Ritchie’s archipelago and arguably the most beautiful of them all, Havelock has been promoting eco-tourism since a while now. With its pristine beaches and beautiful coral reefs, the island is a hot-spot for water sports.

Scuba Diving and Snorkeling:

One of the most attractive features of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, tourists can enjoy the underwater world of marine flora, corals and fish. Some of the islands famous for scuba, snorkeling, deep sea walking, etc. are Neil Island , Long Island, Baratang Island (also known for its limestone caves), Ross Island , etc.

With its ever growing colourful coral reefs, pristine blue waters and white sands, the untouched beaches here will leave you craving for more as you depart. Or, just like us, you might even want to get your travel permit extended for another fortnight! Do remember to check out the schedule for fairs and festivals on the island through their official website ( http://www.andamans.gov.in/html/festivals.html ) before making your itinerary.

A full proof Andaman and Nicobar travel guide is very essential to understand these splendid islands that have been inhabited for several thousand years now. The great Andamanese people have maintained their separate existence through the vast majority of this time, diversifying into distinct linguistic, cultural and territorial groups. However, the islands welcome tourists every year who visit it from across the globe.   The islands have a tropical climate. The months of December to March are warm, sunny days with optimal diving conditions and turtle nesting, while the months of October to December and March to mid-May have a mixed bag of weather with very few tourists and lower costs. And the months from February to August have the ultimate pumping waves on Little Andaman for experienced surfers.

The capital of the Union Territory of Andaman & Nicobar Islands is Port Blair which is the gateway to the pristine islands. This island town offers many water-based activities like snorkeling, scuba diving, and sea-cruises.

Andaman and Nicobar Travel Guide

History of the Andaman Islands

Ptolemy’s geographical treatises from the second century AD contain the earliest mention of the Andaman and Nicobar Travel Guide. Other accounts from the Chinese Buddhist monk I’Tsing and Arabian traders passing through in the ninth century portray the population as vicious and cannibalistic. However, cannibalism among the Andamanese is unlikely, Malay pirates, who controlled the surrounding seas and sought to keep looters away from commerce ships passing between India, China, and the Far East, spread the most vivid accounts of their cruelty.

European missionaries and trading corporations shifted their attention to the islands in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries with a view to colonization. A string of unsuccessful attempts to convert the Nicobaris to Christianity was made by the French, Dutch and Danish, all of whom were forced to abandon their plans in the face of hideous diseases and a severe lack of food and water. Though the missionaries themselves seldom met with any hostility, several fleets of trading ships that tried to dock on the islands were captured, and their crews murdered, by Nicobari people.

In 1777, the British Lieutenant Archibald Blair chose the South Andaman harbour now known as Port Blair as the site for a penal colony, although it was not successfully established until 1858, when political activists who had fuelled the Mutiny in 1857 were made to clear land and build their own prison. Out of 773 prisoners, 292 died, escaped or were hanged in the first two months. Many also lost their lives in attacks by Andamanese tribes who objected to forest clearance, but by 1864 the number of convicts had grown to three thousand. The prison continued to confine political prisoners until 1945 and still stands as Port Blair’s prime “tourist attraction”.

During World War II the islands were occupied by the Japanese, who tortured and murdered hundreds of indigenous islanders suspected of collaborating with the British, and bombed the homes of the Jarawa tribe. British forces moved back in 1945, and at last abolished the penal settlement. After Partition, refugees – mostly low-caste Hindus from Bengal – were given land in Port Blair and North Andaman, where the forest was clear-felled to make room for rice paddy, cocoa plantations and new industries.

Since 1951, the population has increased more than tenfold, further swollen by repatriated Tamils from Sri Lanka, ex-servicemen given land grants, economic migrants from poorer Indian states including thousands of Bihari labourers, and the legions of government employees packed off here on two-year “punishment postings”. This replanted population greatly outnumbers the Andaman and Nicobar Travel Guide’ indigenous people, who currently comprise around 0.5 percent of the total.

There is a lot of rain from May to September and they also catch the northeast monsoon in the autumn, with occasionally violent cyclones prone to hit during either period, so the ideal months to visit from a climatic perspective are December to April. Increased tourism, however, means that Diwali and the Christmas/New Year periods are busy, with prices at their peak. Not all accommodation in the more remote parts such as Little Andaman opens outside peak season.

Places to Visit Andaman Islands

  • Port Blair: A multicultural town offering a glimpse of various local traditions, Port Blair is a scenic escape from the hustle and bustle city life. Steeped in colonial history, Port Blair is perfect as a basecamp for your stay in the Andamans.
  • Havelock Island: Clear blue waters and white sand beaches lined with mahua trees give Havelock Island a picture-perfect look. With long treks and fascinating backwaters, Havelock promises to be an escape into adventure and scenic beauty.
  • Neil Island: This serene island welcomes you to coral reefs, calm beaches and rich wildlife. Needless to say, snorkelling is perfect here since, unlike other islands in the Andamans, Neil Island offers an escape from the crowd. There are still a few virgin beaches around for an evening date with your lover, or better, with nature itself.
  • Limestone Caves, Northern Andamans: The Limestone caves are located in Northern Andaman and Nicobar Travel Guide and are a treat that shouldn’t be missed. Your journey will be mesmerizing, taking you through tribal reserves. You can also catch a glimpse of sun-bathing crocodiles camouflaged perfectly in the mangrove forests of the area.

  • Snorkelling and Scuba Diving:  If you’ve ever snorkelled, you already know that there’s nothing better than snorkelling in clear turquoise waters to explore vibrant aquatic life. The coral reefs at the Andamans are famous for featuring some of the widest range of aquatic flora and fauna. Scuba diving is also a great way to get up close and personal with the vibrant, colourful corals that these beaches are famous for.
  • Cellular Jail Memorial:  The taboo of k ala  paani still haunts the walls of the Cellular Jail. The prisoners sentenced to exile here were not only traumatized by their journey to the prison, but they also believed they’d lose their varna (caste) if they crossed the kala paani (dark water) of the ocean. The British used this prison to exile many freedom fighters and political prisoners. Located at Port Blair, it’s open to tourists from Tuesday to Sunday. The light and sound show at night is especially recommended.
  • Trek to Madhuban: Considered one of the best trekking routes in the country, the trek from Mount Harriet to Madhuban witnesses a huge tourist turnout. The lush green forests and the exotic fauna in the region is why trekking enthusiasts love the place. You can start your trek with a ferry ride from Chatham Harbour, Port Blair. Three major ferry routes in Port Blair connect Chatham, Bamboo Flat, Junglighat, Dundas Point, Viper Island, Hope Town and Mithakari. Ferries from these towns make 45 trips per day. Just a few minutes on the ferry can take you to any of the trek points nearby.

  • Seafood:  Like other coastal areas, seafood is a specialty of the region. Port Blair is particularly recommended: try the whole lobster at New Lighthouse Restaurant or the seafood platter at Red Snapper. You can also get fresh fried fish from the morning’s catch at almost all of the islands.
  • Local Fare: When you reach Havelock, do check out the delicious samosas. If you’re looking for affordable yet scrumptious meals, many tiny local restaurants serve healthy Indian thalis at reasonable prices. Many local joints also offer Italian, Thai and Continental cuisine, if you’re allergic to,or not fond of, seafood.

When to Go:

andaman quick travel guide

October - May:  Winters in the region aren’t chilly, and weather stays pleasant for the most part. It’s the best time to enjoy water sports and other water activities.

January:  If you want to witness the culture and tradition of locals in the Andamans, visit the place in January. A lot of fairs and festivals will keep you busy on your trip. The Island Tourism Festival is a 14-day long festival showcasing the various traditions followed by the tribals of the region. The Subhash Mela is organized on the Birth Anniversary of Subhash Chandra Bose. The Block Mela captures the diversity in culture and rural life of locals in these islands.

May - October: The Andamans witness heavy rains throughout the monsoon season, but that shouldn’t stop you from visiting. The Andamans have a distinct beauty of its own in the rains!

Getting There:

andaman quick travel guide

By Air:  Most tourists prefer to take flights from either Kolkata or Chennai. Most flights are operated by Go Air and Spicejet.

By Ship:  Passenger ships are available to Port Blair from Vishakhapatnam, Kolkata, and Chennai. Three to four trips from Chennai and Kolkata to Port Blair and vice versa are common every month. One sailing takes place from Vishakhapatnam every month. Each voyage takes about 50-60 hours, with the ship docked at Port Blair for two to three days.

Reaching Havelock:  Located at just 38 Kms from Port Blair, Havelock has a luxurious camping facility near Radha Nagar beach. Two to three ferries operate every day between Port Blair and Havelock.

Getting Around:

andaman quick travel guide

Private Jeeps and Minivans:  A cab in the region usually costs around Rs 500-800 for airport pick and drop, and around Rs.1500 for 1-day sightseeing, covering famous points. For a trip from Port Blair to Diglipur, it might cost you around Rs 10,000. Though it sounds a bit expensive, there will be some fun stopovers on the way. Scooters and motorbikes are easily available for hire from Port Blair. You may have to shell out around Rs 400 per day. However, some restrictions are imposed in tribal regions where tourists are prohibited from driving their own vehicles, particularly in Middle and North Andaman.

Bus: All ferries and roads in the region lead to Port Blair. Middle, North and South Andaman are well connected by road, with bridges and ferry crossings. You can also take a bus from Port Blair to Diglipur, Baratang, Mayabunder and Rangat in the North, and Wandoor in the South.

Boat:  Most trips to the islands require you to travel by boat. A romantic trip on the backwaters will not only give you a tour of some unexplored beaches, but will also save you from the hassles of public transport. Book in advance to save yourself from long queues. Not all islands are open for tourists, and you should check with the Tourist Information Center before planning your trip.

What to Pack:

  • Light cotton clothes for the summer, a light cardigan for winters
  • Dark sunglasses, umbrella, raincoat, and trekking shoes if you’re planning to trek to Madhuban
  • Lots and lots of sunscreen
  • Basic medicines, anti-allergic medications, glucose supplements to prevent dehydration
  • Beach wear, of course. Scuba diving and snorkelling kits are available for hire at the beach

Unexplored beaches, clear blue waters, stunning rainforests and a dash of history—all this can be found right off the coast of India in the Andaman Islands.
