This Salina restaurant still coming up a smash hit on national best burger lists

big 7 travel best burgers

It's another week in Salina and The Cozy Inn has been named to even more lists of the best burgers in the country.

This time, the honors come from Reader's Digest, which named Cozys the best burger in Kansas for 2023 , and the website Big 7 Travel, which included it in the 2023 edition of its Top 50 Burgers in the United States list.

A little over a year since the Salina staple celebrated a century in business, current owner Steve Howard said he's still surprised by the accolades the world famous restaurant gets, but he points to that history, and the simplicity of the food he serves, as the reason people keep talking about Cozy Inn.

"(For) 101 years in business (we've done) one thing well," Howard said.

That one thing is making a quality, onion-laden, slider-style burger.

"Truly, people seek us out, they travel hundreds ... sometimes thousands of miles," Howard said. "They're excited ... they're finally here."

Cozy Inn takes pride in serving quality product

Howard said he thinks the product he serves at Cozys is the biggest reason people keep coming back, and why word of mouth has brought the restaurant so much attention over the years.

"It all starts with my beef. It's not hamburger. It's ground round," Howard said. "Inside round is my trim and I want 90% or leaner."

While having such a lean cut can sometimes lead to a drier burger, Howard said the onions, which staff cuts and grinds 20 to 40 pounds at a time, makes up the moisture that might be lost.

"(We cut that many onions) so that we don't have to do them everyday, because everybody cries," Howard said.

Another plaque added to the Cozy Inn's wall

Howard said he had a customer come in earlier this week who mentioned the restaurant had received another honor, but the owner said he wasn't aware at the time which one it was.

"This guy called me and I've got ... another plaque coming," Howard said.

More: Local candidates taking part in Speed Dating forum with Salina League of Women Voters

This one will be placed on the wall next to the restaurant's entrance, adding the already half dozen or so that are displayed there now.

The attention things like these awards, and the word-of-mouth marketing, brings to the restaurant is good for Howard and his employees.

"You just want to feed off of that enthusiasm and excitement," Howard said. "Everybody wants five-star (ratings). Well, I want six (stars)."

Chili cheeseburger from Latonia burger joint named best in Kentucky by Big 7 Travel

big 7 travel best burgers

A Northern Kentucky burger joint has claimed the title of the best burger in the state, according to Big 7 Travel.

Bard’s Burgers & Chili in the Latonia area of Covington snagged the Kentucky spot on Big 7 Travel's list of Best Burgers in United States 2021.

"We’ve been checking out suggestions from our audience on their (favorite) burgers year-round, as well as contributions from the Big 7 Travel editorial team," Big 7 Travel said.

Across the river: Zip's Cafe ranked best burger in Ohio by Food & Wine

Rankings are based on editorial opinions and experiences; online customer reviews; consistency' online presence; value for money and presentation.

"This popular fast food joint in Covington is famous for its Cincinnati-style chili and hefty burgers. While you could stick to a classic cheeseburger here, it would be a sin not to try the delicious Chili-Cheese burger. The tender, perfectly seared beef patties are smothered with melted cheese and (flavorsome) chili in a soft toasted bun," Big 7 Travel said.

Nano Brew in Cleveland and Fat Dan’s Chicago-Style Deli in Indianapolis took home the gold in their respective states.

Bard’s Burgers & Chilli is located at 3620 Decoursey Avenue in Latonia.

If you’re yet to experience the crisp perfection of a smash burger, opt for The Smash Hit: two 3oz smashed Angus patties ironed together, topped with juicy fried onions, yellow mustard, American cheese and chunky pickle burger sauce, between a gorgeously toasted garlic butter brioche bun. The vegetarian, made with black beans and chickpeas, is well worth a try, even if you do usually eat meat. We’re not the only ones raving about these burgers either; Flipside won the National Burger Awards in 2021.

Sligo

19.  The Frying Pan — Vancouver, Canada

OK, so The Frying Pan isn’t  technically  a burger joint, but it does serve up the best chicken burgers in town. The popular Korean street food chain started as a food truck between Pender Street and Burrard Street, but this year they’ve moved into their first bricks and mortar premises. Order the Double Decker, you won’t regret it.

18. Bamba Marha Burger Bar/ The Goofy Cow Burger – Budapest, Hungary (and Dubai UAE)

Ranked as the No. 1 burger in Hungary , this classic Budapest burger bar boasts some of the best burgers in the business. The secret to their success here lies in the ingredients: high-quality beef and locally sourced toppings. There’s something for every taste on the menu too, from the classic cheeseburger to the Big Kahuna, made with cheddar cheese, grilled bacon, grilled pineapple and teriyaki sauce.  What you end up with is an absolute taste sensation that tantalises and impresses every single time you visit. This roaring success has opened up a second location in Dubai under the name The Goofy Cow Burger .

Bamba

17. 4505 Burgers & BBQ – San Francisco

This barbecue joint serves up top-tier burgers in the heart of the city. The grass-fed beef patties are plump and juicy, the lettuce is crisp and the gruyère cheese is a winning touch. We heartily recommend going the whole hog with a fried egg on top too.

16. Community Tavern – Chicago, Illinois

If you’re up to speed with our annual burger roundups, Community Tavern will already be a familiar face. It has featured in most of our roundups for good reason. The husband and wife team who own the tavern put a lot of love and care into all of their dishes, but it’s the burger that really stands out. This colossal double cheeseburger comprises two juicy patties, draped in cheese and topped with caramelized onions and a zingy sauce.

15. Bread Meats Bread – Glasgow & Edinburgh, Scotland

Bread Meats Bread boasts one of the mightiest menus we’ve ever seen, with more than 15 mouthwatering burgers to choose from. You could play it safe with one of the classics, but we recommend going all out and opting for the Wolf Burger. It’s a bacon cheeseburger loaded with pulled pork in tangy BBQ sauce, crispy fried onions and gochujang mayo. Patties are made of three different cuts of dry-aged grass-fed Scotch beef from small Perthshire farms too. A word to the wise: come hungry, the portions are huge.

Bread

14. Jack Brown’s Beer & Burger Joint – Birmingham, Alabama

Founded by childhood friends in 2014, there’s a wide range of brilliant burgers on the menu at Jack Brown’s but we recommend trying one of the ‘speciality burgers. These bad boy burgers are made with 100% all-natural Wagyu beef. Local favourites include the Elvis (wagyu topped with peanut butter, mayo, applewood smoked bacon and American cheese) and the Dr Gonzo (with sautéed mushrooms, Guinness onions, Swiss cheese applewood smoked bacon).

13. Gasoline Grill – Copenhagen, Denmark

Set in a former gas station near Kgs. Nytorv, Gasoline Grill has won countless local and international awards for its epic burgers and thick, crinkly fries. There are just four delicious burgers to choose from, which makes it nice and easy for indecisive eaters. Patties are made from 100% organic beef and topped with a secret “gasoline sauce”. Juicy perfection.

12. Smokin’ Joes – Durban, South Africa

Smokin’ Joe’s serves knockout burgers made of prime beef ground in-house daily. Standard patties weigh 65 grams but if you’re feeling peckish, treat yourself to a “heavyweight” made with a whopping 180 grams of juicy chargrilled and basted beef. And, if you’re feeling flush you can upgrade to a wagyu patty. Fries are loaded with truffle and thyme, chilli cheese or smoked macon and chilli cheese for some added decadence.

Smokin Joes

11. Bub’s NOLA – New Orleans, Louisiana

Bub’s, which started life in 2020 as a pop-up, is named in memory of the late Rand Owens. Their burgers became so popular that it quickly became evident that the tight-knit group of friends would need a permanent home (now on Banks Street). If it’s your first time here, opt for their namesake burger, made with two juicy patties formed on hot griddles, American cheese, pickles, onions and ‘Bub sauce’, stacked onto a brioche bun.

Bubs

10.  Burgermeister – Berlin, Germany

This iconic burger joint is so popular, it’s practically a local institution. Located in a vintage (former) public toilet under the Schlesisches Tor subway, it’s easy to spot thanks to the nearly-permanent queue of burger enthusiasts trailing out the door. Pop in for the classic cheeseburger or the Meister Allen Klarson, made with a double patty, double cheese, bacon, jalapenos, barbecue sauce lettuce, tomato and dill pickles. Yum.

Burgermeister

9. Mamo Burger Bar – Ontario, Canada

It’s not the first time Mamo Burger Bar has slipped into our top 10, and we’re certain it won’t be the last. These blockbuster burgers are piled high with some seriously creative toppings, from macaroni cheese to peanut butter and siracha strawberry jelly. There’s even a turkey burger, made with soy-glazed pineapple and roasted garlic aioli. A stroke of creative genius.

Mamo Burger Bar

8. Smash Tag – Rome, Italy

One of Rome’s newest burger joints has fast become a favourite with locals. Smash Tag is the best place in the city for a truly American-Italian burger. Riccardo Di Salvo Salvo, Ivan Leone, and Giorgio Rajani set up shop in April 2021 and they’ve been doing a roaring trade ever since. Their best-selling Smash Burger is crispy and juicy, selected from different cuts of meat every day. There’s a whole string of secret sauces too, making for a truly unique bite.

Rome

7. Mother Flipper – London, UK

There’s stiff competition when it comes to the best burger in the city – London is home to some of the best burger joints on the continent. But when it comes to quality burgers without gimmicks, it’s hard to beat Mother Flipper. Made with 35-day aged steak and cooked medium rare, we’d go as far as to say these are the juiciest burgers in the city. The ‘Candy Bacon Flipper’, made with red onion, pickle, American cheese and bacon fried in maple syrup is a real crowd-pleaser. Beware, it’s a weekend treat only. You’ll need to hotfoot to Brockley Market on Saturdays from 10-2 pm to sink your teeth into these bunds. You can also find them at Kerb Food Markets around London.

Mother Flipper

6. The Nook – St. Paul, Minnesota

The Nook describes itself as a small place with big burgers, and boy are they right about that. It’s the best place in town to try a ‘Jucy Lucy’ – a stuffed burger with cheese melted inside the meat instead of on top for an extra gooey bite. You can also choose a pretzel or wheat bun too.

burgers united states

5. La Birra Bar – Buenos Aires, Argentina (now also Miami & Madrid)

This family-run business has long been one of Argentina’s favourite burger joints. Then, in 2021 it became the first ever Argentine hamburger chain to reach the U.S, opening its doors on Biscayne Boulevard in North Miami Beach. The family has a self-described obsession with creating the burger, which we can easily believe. Everything is made from scratch, from the hand-chopped beef to the pickles, for the perfect mouthful.

Argenitin

4. BAP– Burgers and Pastrami – Stockholm, Sweden

Opened in 2017, Burgers and Pastrami has quickly become one of Stockholm’s favourite burger joints. In the past year or so, this busy burger joint has elevated itself to new heights, with imaginative creations like the “Truffle Trouble” and the “BBQ Swey”. Burgers are tender, and juicy and served with a generous side of crispy fries.

BAP

3. Burger Geek – Auckland, New Zealand

For one of the most beautiful burgers in the world, you’ll need to hotfoot to Auckland. Think  tender, juicy beef topped with oozing cheese and stuffed in a pillowy soft and buttery brioche bun. The team here don’t take any shortcuts either: they source bread from local bakeries, cure bacon for seven days and smoke it using applewood in-store and make patties from their own special  blend of Wagyu and Angus cuts, freshly ground on-site every day.

Burger

2. Midcity Smashedburger, – Portland, Oregon

These burger boys are, quite literally, smashing it. The New Orleans-born business boasts Portland’s best – and newest – smash burger. On the surface, it’s just meat, cheese and sauce in a bun but the reality is so much more. Two thin and crispy beef patties are smashed together beneath a cast iron press, slathered with American cheese slices and the chef’s own special smash sauce, and then served between two fluffy buns. All for just $6. The nostalgic food cart has been such a hit that there are now 4 locations to choose from, Level Beer, Cartside Food Pod, Uptown Brewing and Boneyard Beer.

1. Royal Stacks – Melbourne, Australia

This cult-classic burger joint is no stranger to our burger roundups, but this is the first time it’s nabbed first place. What swung the vote? A funky new location at the Emporium. Choose from 13 delicious pattys loaded up with ooey-gooey cheese and served alongside potato in almost every form, from french fries to cheesy potato gems. It’s as good as it sounds.

Bunsen has ranked very highly in the ‘Best Burgers In Europe’ list for 2020

James Fenton

big 7 travel best burgers

Big 7 Travel has released its 50 Best Burgers In Europe 2020 list and for the second year running, Dublin’s very own Bunsen has been ranked in seventh position.

The popular chain maintains its spot largely because us locals are ‘obsessed’ with it, according to Big 7. In the blurb written on Bunsen, there is a nod to the restaurant’s famous tiny menu, handed out on a small card, ‘where you can choose exactly how you want your beef burger to be cooked.’

The Bunsen team are also commended for making their own buns while their creamy shakes also get a mention, being described as ‘an added bonus’.

https://www.instagram.com/p/ByC69Ksgh9x/

Impressively, Bunsen isn’t the only Irish representation in Big 7’s list, with Handsome Burger in Galway also ranking highly in 20th position. Referred to as a ‘rising star in the west of Ireland’, if you haven’t made the trip as of yet, you really have no excuse any more. You can read more about Handsome Burger’s inclusion here .

As for the burger joints that kept Bunsen from finishing higher? Sixth position was given to Bamba Marha Burger Bar in Budapest, Flippin’ Burgers in Stockholm came fifth and VLND Burger was selected in fourth.

The top three was made up of Goiko Grill in Valencia in third, Burger and Beyond in London in second and the top spot went to the hopefully not aptly-named Sad Man’s Tongue Bar & Bistro in Prague .

Bunsen currently has six locations in Dublin, namely South Anne Street, Ranelagh, Temple Bar, Wexford Street, Dame Street and the recently-opened branch on Baggot Street. As well as that, they also have spots in Cork, Belfast and even Barcelona.

You can view Big 7’s full 50 Best Burgers In Europe 2020 list here but be warned, make sure to have a tissue nearby. You will be salivating.

Big 7 Travel names 11:11 Burgers & Beignets no. 1 burger in state, Fat Joe's no. 23

big 7 travel best burgers

FOND DU LAC – It appears Fond du Lac is home to the best burger in Wisconsin.

Big 7 Travel , a website which gives travelers information on what they deem the best places to eat, stay and visit from all around the world, named 11:11 Burgers & Beignets the number one burger in the state on its “The 25 Best Burger in Wisconsin” list.

The website rates items on various criteria, including: editorial opinions and experiences; critic and online customer reviews; accessibility and location; atmosphere; service; presentation; value; and online presence, according to the site .

11:11 Burgers & Beignets Owner Ryonen Faris said he had no knowledge of the list until someone tagged him in a social media post earlier this week. At first, his reaction was disbelief — and laughter.

“I was like ‘what are you talking about?’” Faris said. “I’m just trying to have a good local restaurant and make it grow. I never really had aspirations to be the biggest, best burger chain in America.”

With its variety of unique sandwiches, such as “the PB & J Burger” and “Breakfast Buffet Burger,” the article dubbed 11:11 as “easily one of the best places in the state for a juicy burger.”

“The burgers here are generally thicker than normal beef patties so know that before ordering a double patty — it’s a beast. Plus, with two locations you’ve no excuse not to stop in,” the review tells foodies.

Fat Joe’s earned Fond du Lac its second claim to burger fame, as it landed on the list at no. 23. Co-Owner Tad Wallender said Fat Joe’s, too, is honored to be included on the list, which features “some outstanding establishments.” Of the variety of “droolworthy” and “super original” burgers offered at Fat Joe’s, Big 7 Travel lists the French Onion burger as one of the “must-eats.”

“This list is a testament to the hard work from our creative kitchen staff so we can continuously serve the best and most creative products we can,” he said.

A high point in a year of change

At 11:11, Faris posted the list to the restaurant’s Facebook page, and the post “blew up,” he said. Since Tuesday, it has garnered 200 shares and nearly 300 likes. Comments included “honestly, your burgers on the best on the planet! But congrats on the top spot,” and “So proud of you guys, you deserve it!”

The award is not the first the restaurant has received. Since opening at 417 S.  Main St. in 2015, 11:11, has been crowned the best burger in Fond du Lac in the Readers’ Choice/Best of Fond du Lac Awards, and in 2018 took home top honors in 10 out of 30 categories, including “Best All Around Restaurant.”

However, the a “best of” for the state added another level of pride to staff, many of whom have worked with restaurant for many years, growing as 11:11 did, Faris said.

When Faris’ nephew, who works as a manager at the restaurant, came in to the restaurant this week, he said “So what do you think of your nephew making the best burgers in the state now?”

“Any award (we) can get, we’ll take,” Faris said. “The more I can show off, the more customers have really had a good time and experience at the restaurant.”

The past year has been one of growth and loss for 11:11. Only a couple weeks after the restaurant opened its second location at 718 W. Johnson St., Faris’ father, Tom Faris, who opened 11:11 with him in 2015 and was called “11:11’s dad,” died due to complications from numerous health issues.

While people flooded to the Johnson Street location to check it out, business on Main Street “dropped off significantly." Now it the restaurant is running “well,” again as Faris believes people who live in the area of Main Street are returning to their local restaurant, rather than driving across town, he said.

In another new addition, 11:11 on Johnson Street introduced breakfast meals to the menu in the past month. “A unique breakfast,” offerings include build-your-own omelets and skillets, biscuits and gravy, stuffed French toast and “their signature line of flapjacks,” Faris said.

Flapjacks come in a variety of flavors like, caramel apple cinnamon, pumpkin, s'mores and pineapple upside down. With the help of applesauce and a special mix, almost all can be made gluten-free and vegan, except red velvet and pumpkin, Faris said.

The breakfast options have increased in popularity over the past month, with this week having its largest Thursday Breakfast to date, Faris said. This just sweetens a week which already was seeing a spike in traffic due to its no. 1 accolade.

“It’s an unexpected honor. I know my dad would be ecstatic,” Faris said. “My dad loves winning and being the best, and I love it too … I know he would be super proud of it and I know he’s looking down and is excited and guiding the restaurant to success.”

big 7 travel best burgers

(Fargo, ND) -- Global travel site Big 7 Travel has officially released its annual list of 'The 50 Best Burgers In The United States,' and one Fargo restaurant stood out above the rest in the state.

JL Beers in Fargo got the honor, and number 47 overall in the study.

"We’ve been checking out suggestions from our audience on their favorite burgers year-round, as well as contributions from the Big 7 Travel editorial team," said the travel group. "And, just like the ever-changing hospitality industry itself, this year’s list features some new and creative burgers."

This is what the web site lists for the Fargo Burger and Beer joint:

Burgers, burgers, and beer. The perfect trifecta. The restaurant offers great taste in its burgers and has a great beer collection. If you’re ever in Fago, you have to try their 22nd Avenue Burger their Mt. Mushmore. The beef is super tender and juicy here, with the signature JL Burger a must-order. It’s with grilled onions piled high, cheese, special sauce and two hamburger patties.

Ontario & Quebec Are Dominating When It Comes To The Best Burgers In Canada

Ontario & Quebec Are Dominating When It Comes To The Best Burgers In Canada

When you think of great food in our country your mind might immediately go to poutine and that's cool. However, there are so many other amazing eats here in the north especially when it comes to a delicious patty with all the fixings. The best burgers in Canada were ranked and most are in Ontario and Quebec.

Our country has a lot to offer when it comes to unique and interesting food but sometimes you just want a good old fashioned hamburger.

Big 7 Travel released a ranking of the 50 best burgers in Canada and the list is seriously mouthwatering.

To figure out just where the best of the best are in the country, Big 7 Travel looked at suggestions from its readers and its 2 million strong social audience.

"The burgers here are massive and flavourful, often featuring the country’s highest quality beef then piled high with toppings and tasty sauces," the recommendations site stated in the rankings.

The list has spots to get a good patty from all over the country but Ontario and Quebec are dominating the burger game in the true north.

The honour of having the best burger goes to Mamo Burger Bar in Windsor, Ontario for its use of local beef as a base and the huge piles of tasty toppings.

See on Instagram

Uniburger in Montreal , OMG Resto in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Rudy in Toronto and Le Chic Shack in Quebec City round out the top five with thanks to the quality of the patty, how good the burgers taste and the sometimes outrageous toppings.

At OMG Resto, there's actually a burger with two peppers sticking out of the bun that looks like devil horns.

The only spots in the top 10 that aren't from Ontario or Quebec are 2 Doors Down in Halifax, L'abbatoir in Vancouver and Harvest Eatery in Shaunavon, Saskatchewan.

Of the entire list, 32 spots are from Ontario and Quebec. These two provinces are totally dominating.

There are four places in Nova Scotia, four in Alberta, four in B.C., three in Manitoba, two in New Brunswick and one in Saskatchewan included in the rankings.

Despite the prominence of the two provinces, there are still places to get great burgers no matter where you are in Canada.

Even for the 50th place on the list, Apollo Grill in Peterborough, Ontario, Big 7 Travel still calls their eats "some of the world's most mouthwatering hand-crafted burgers."

If you weren't craving a burger before, you probably are now.

For the complete ranking, go to Big 7 Travel's website .

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

You’ll flip for these burgers — and more.

A trusted travel guide brand has named the best fast food restaurants in America — and the list contains some delicious surprises.

Fodor’s writer Geena Truman compiled the list , reportedly based on a year of extensive travel.

“Visions of golden-fried cheese curds, succulent smash burgers, and cheese-topped fries distracted me from the rolling scenery of America’s backroads,” confessed Truman, an unabashed fast food lover.

And while many of us might just pull into the nearest familiar-looking chain, the intrepid eater said she sought out regional and less obvious options, from New England to the Pacific Northwest.

Here are her picks — do you agree?

1. Culver’s

Calling the Wisconsin-based butter burger and frozen custard chain “the most delicious fast food pit stop in America,” the author couldn’t speak highly enough of the homespun Midwest favorite that’s now located in 26 states (and hopefully more to come). Truman gives a nod to the restaurant’s famed side of fried cheese curds, noting that Culver’s “gives the outer appearance of fast-food but outperforms all others in taste.”

2. Shake Shack

Admitting that maybe she’s a little biased towards frozen custard purveyors — honestly, can we blame her — Truman talks up Danny Meyer’s still growing burger and sweet treat chain, which, incidentally, was modeled after the Midwestern stands of Meyer’s St. Louis childhood.

A whopping 25 states now have their own Shack, with more to come.

“The perfect meal? A coffee custard shake, a simple all-American Angus Beef hot dog with cheese dipping sauce, and a smash burger,” Truman writes, giving her appreciation to the “real food with real ingredients” that’s worth the extra money you pay.

3. In-N-Out

“If you want a *cheap* fast-food burger with fresh toppings, a classic Americana malted milkshake, and cheesy fries with just a dash of salt, this is the place for you,” Truman said.

She notes that the food feels fresher than at other fast food chains, saying that she “can eat a Double-Double Burger animal-style with a heaping pile of fresh onions, cheese fries, and a chocolate malt shake” and still walk out feeling good. Millions of West Coasters would agree.

The Southern California institution has been expanding in recent years, to Oregon, Colorado, Texas and soon, Tennessee and perhaps elsewhere in the Southeast.

4. Whataburger

What In-N-Out is to Calfifornia, the home of one of fast food’s biggest burgers (at least measured across) is to Texas. Truman calls out the chain’s “spicy ketchup, taquitos, honey-butter chicken biscuit, well-battered onion rings, Green Chile Burger, and oozing patty melt.”

However, she says that eating here is more about the size of the food than the quality, saying that it’s “not a mind-blowing eating event.”

The chain has expanded to states like Arizona and now, Nevada, where a sparkling, giant-sized branch that would make Texans jealous recently opened at the foot of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel on the Las Vegas Strip. (Talk about an interesting pairing.)

5. Raising Cane’s

Raising Cane's

Georgia has Chick-Fil-A. Louisiana has Raising Cane’s. Truman appears to prefer the latter, ranking them ahead of the Polynesian Sauce purveyor.

Here, however, the menu is even simpler — chicken fingers from fresh-never-frozen birds, served with crinkle-cut fries, creamy coleslaw, thick, buttery Texas Toast and sides of remoulade-style Cane’s sauce. “Raising Cane’s perfected the recipe,” Truman says of the chicken fingers.

The chain has spread across the country, even making inroads right at the heart of NYC, with locations in Times Square, Harlem and the East Village.

6. Five Guys

“While the burgers are tasty and completely customizable…it’s really the fries that shine,” Truman opines of the popular and pricey chain that’s located all over the country and increasingly, the world. (Five Guys Barcelona, anyone?)

“Hefty bags of Idaho potatoes are literally stacked for all to see in the hallways of their restaurants. Freshly cut daily into “boardwalk-style” slivers and fried up in peanut oil (nut-allergists beware) Five Guys also offers them “Cajun-style” for travelers who want a little spice in their life,” Truman says.

7. Chick-Fil-A

Chick-Fil-A products

Appreciating their “juicy deluxe chicken sandwich and tasty breaded nuggets,” Truman has less to say about the wildly-popular (and fast-growing) chain, referencing the “hype” and the long lines at newly-opened franchises.

8. Dave’s Hot Chicken

This celeb-backed chain — he fastest-growing fast food concept in America, the author writes — takes a concept that’s still typically found at trendy one-off spots and markets it to the masses, quite successfully.

So maybe it’s not Nashville-level great, but Truman calls a Dave’s meal the “perfect road trip snack.”

Choose from the “chicken tender slider (topped with smoky cheese and very California kale slaw) or a couple of the extra large-sized chicken tenders,” Truman suggests — urging diners to pair whatever they order with the restaurant’s creamy mac and cheese.

9. Kelly’s Roast Beef

Noting that this Boston-area institution inspired Arby’s, Truman raves about the “their “25-day aged beef knuckle roast, cooked in-house to the perfect medium rare, sliced to order, and placed delicately on a bun with a rich BBQ sauce and melty white cheese.”

The pride of Revere Beach is harder to find than most of the brands on this list, but it’s growing — and it could definitely beat Arby’s if it grew enough.

10. White Castle

Reminding readers that the spiritual home of the slider predates McDonald’s — true fact — Truman says that she didn’t tap the classic chain because of 1920s nostalgia or the restaurant’s place in the American pantheon.

“It’s the sliders,” she says, noting that there are now 12 differnet kindsto choose from, including fish, chicken and waffles and plant-based meats.

11. Dick’s

Dick’s is easily the In-N-Out of the Puget Sound, and though we’d have chosen the quirky and delicious Taco Time NW to represent that region, a trip to this basic and delicious burger drive-in is something akin to a cultural experience, essential to any road trip that includes the Seattle area.

Touting their “delicious beef burgers, salty fries, and thick old-school shakes served from walk-up windows,” Truman also gives them cred for treating their employees well and their community spirit, too.

The Seattle native also shouts out another regional chain, Zips, for their “huge tubs of crinkle-cut fries, behemoth burgers with three sizzling meat patties and sliced ham, country-style chicken strips, and freshly fried and battered fish filets pad the monster-sized menu.”

12. Jollibee

Group of people, including Chan Heng Chee, Yan Zibei, and Albert Tsai, standing outside the first New York location of Jollibee, a popular Filipino fast food chain

The top fast food chain in The Philippines — with a cheerful bee as its mascot — is increasingly showing up all over America, and Truman is definitely into the idea, saying there’s “no other fast food chain quite like it in America.”

Go for “crispy fried chicken, beef patty steaks with gravy, spicy tuna pies, and their trademark sweet-sauce-topped spaghetti meals,” she says, calling the chicken — when executed correctly — “better than KFC.”
