5 broadway shows to see this winter in nyc.

broadway tour 2024

There’s truly nothing quite like the holiday season in New York City. As the weather gets colder, the city somehow manages to get cozier and brighter, filled with lights, music and plenty of holiday magic. The giant tree at Rockefeller Center presides over legions of bundled-up shoppers searching for the perfect gift, and skaters fill the iconic ice rink with peals of laughter and joy.

Entertainment options in the Big Apple feel nearly endless during Christmastime, too: the sounds of Mariah Carey fill the air, the Rockettes take over Radio City Music Hall with their annual high-kicking extravaganza, and Broadway lights up with the best live theater the country has to offer.

Below, we’ve rounded up seven of the best NYC Broadway shows for the whole family to enjoy during the holidays — and beyond — from long-running Disney favorites to the hilarious return of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table. Scroll through the discovery guide and check out our picks for this season’s can’t-miss shows.

Spamalot is back! The new revival of the uproariously funny musical based on the comedy classic Monty Python and the Holy Grail is one of the hottest tickets in town after transferring from its sold-out run at Washington D.C.’s Kennedy Center. Starring Saturday Night Live alum Taran Killam as Lancelot and James Monroe Iglehart as King Arthur, the show also features Broadway stars Christopher Fitzgerald (Patsy), Leslie Rodriguez Kritzer (The Lady of the Lake), Ethan Slater (Historian/Herbert), and more. Come for the running gags like “He Is Not Dead Yet” and “The Song That Goes Like This,” but stay for The Lady of the Lake’s Act 2 showstopper “Diva’s Lament (What Ever Happened To My Part?).”

Get Broadway tickets to Spamalot here .

There’s a party going on in Agrabah, and it’s happening eight times a week at the New Amsterdam Theatre. The Broadway re-telling of the 1992 animated Disney classic brings the story of Aladdin, Princess Jasmine, the Genie and more to vivid life with favorite songs like “A Friend Like Me,” “Prince Ali,” and “A Whole New World,” plus multiple musical numbers written by the late Howard Ashman and Tim Rice that were cut from the original film like sentimental tearjerker “Proud of Your Boy.”

The Lion King

Hakuna matata! Now the highest-grossing Broadway production of all time, The Lion King has enchanted generations of kids since it first debuted on the Great White Way in 1997. The lavish production incorporates giant puppets and mind-boggling costuming as the actors on stage transform into Simba, Nala, Rafiki, Scar, Timon, Pumbaa, Mufasa and more. It’s a perfect show to introduce kids to the magic of Broadway, and the whole family will recognize songs like “Can You Feel The Love Tonight,” “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King” and “Circle of Life.” When it comes to Broadway shows in New York, you can’t do better than this classic.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical

It’s been more than two years since Moulin Rouge! The Musical dominated the 74th Tony Awards, taking home 10 trophies including Best Musical. Since then, the show has been transporting audiences back to the Belle Époque, when a dashing young composer named Christian falls for Satine, the star of the famous Parisian cabaret Moulin Rouge. Taking cues from the 2001 movie musical of the same name, the jukebox musical provides a feast for the senses as the star-crossed pair fall in love to the sounds of “Lady Marmalade,” “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend,” the famous “Elephant Love Medley” and more. Plus, in February 2024, Boy George will join the proceedings for a limited run as Moulin Rouge owner Harold Zidler!

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

Return to the Wizarding World as the next generation of Harry Potter stars make their mark at Hogwarts… and the very history of magic. Albus Severus Potter may be the younger son of the Boy Who Lived, but his experience at school is far from his famous father’s glory days. Not only does Albus get sorted into Slytherin, his only friend is Scorpius Malfoy — son of Harry’s old rival Draco — and the pair find themselves relentlessly bullied at the very bottom of Hogwarts’ social hierarchy. Getting their hands on a powerful prototype of a Time-Turner, Albus and Scorpius are determined to rewrite the past and travel back to a time filled with familiar faces like Cedric Diggory, Dumbledore, Snape and even the return of He Who Must Not Be Named.

“A jaw-dropping funhouse!” - The New York Times

Broadway's “SCREAMINGLY GOOD FUN!” ( Variety ) musical comedy is now haunting houses all across the country! Based on Tim Burton’s dearly beloved film, BEETLEJUICE tells the story of Lydia Deetz, a strange and unusual teenager whose whole life changes when she meets a recently deceased couple and a demon with a thing for stripes. With an irreverent book, an astonishing set, and a score that’s out of this Netherworld, BEETLEJUICE is “A FEAST FOR THE EYES AND SOUL!” ( Entertainment Weekly ). And under its uproarious surface (six feet under, to be exact), it’s a remarkably touching show about family, love, and making the most of every Day-O!

‘the wiz’ broadway review: we’re off to see the cheap national tour.

broadway tour 2024

My apologies to Evilene, the wicked witch in “The Wiz,” who famously demands in song that her henchmen bring her “no bad news.”

Two hours and 30 minutes, with one intermission. At the Marquis Theatre, 210 W. 46th Street.

Because I must unfortunately report that the new revival of that musical, which opened Wednesday night at the Marquis Theatre, is not the dazzler that fans have waited so long for. Quite the contrary.

And that’s bad news, indeed.

Despite the cozy feeling of being reunited with beloved material 40 years after it was last on Broadway, director Schele Williams’ production is deflatingly flimsy and lackluster. Clumsily staged, it’s a Wiz-sper of what it should be.

Still, the Emerald City offers occasional shimmers of hope.

The all-black riff on L. Frank Baum’s “The Wizard of Oz,” which was made into a 1978 movie starring Michael Jackson and Diana Ross, is chockablock with infectious tunes, such as “Ease On Down The Road” and “Home,” and is sometimes rescued here by the voices of its talented cast.

Then — I’ll get you my pretty! — we spot the villain that’s lurking behind them: ugly CGI backdrops that look like Windows XP screensavers. Surely, the creative team can do better than that.

A scene from The Aiz

If they only had more than practicality on the brain! This “Wiz” arrives in New York via a months-long national tour. It’s obviously been built to easily fit into a wide array of venues around the country.

But Hannah Beachler’s sets are so cheap and unremarkable, and Daniel Brodie’s artificial-intelligence-style projections so prominent, that the overwhelming vibe is that we and the tour are actually still stuck in Kansas. We’re certainly not on Broadway.

Such cut corners are hard to stomach in a tale of a lush, magical land over a rainbow, especially when another take on “Oz” — “Wicked” — remains a visual wow, 20 years later and only four blocks away.

Yes, “The Wiz” should ease on down the road — but with boundless creativity and awe.

Nichelle Lewis and Melody A . Betts on a porch

For the two of you who don’t know, it’s the old story of Dorothy (Nichelle Lewis), a Kansas farmgirl who’s whisked by a tornado to the Land of Oz, with a new — or, rather, 49-year-old — twist.

In the 1970s, composer Charlie Smalls brought Motown-style music — the sort you don’t just hear, but feel from head to toe — to Munchkinland.

En route to get help from the Wizard (Wayne Brady), Dorothy meets the Scarecrow (Avery Wilson), Tinman (Phillip Johnson Richardson) and Lion (Kyle Ramar Freeman), who all have unique struggles of their own.

Their songs are fabulous. The quartet doesn’t follow the Yellow Brick Road, they “Ease On Down” it. The Tinman’s “If I Only Had A Heart” becomes “Slide Some Oil To Me.” And “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” gets an altogether differently poignant counterpart in “Home.”

Phillip Johnson Richardson plays the Tinman

Richardson, as that poor rusty bucket of bolts, does best with writer Amber Ruffin’s newly added, funny jokes. And his number is the most energizing of the three supportive Ozians, likable though the others are.

They’re tormented by the powerful Evilene, sung with vigor by Melody A. Betts, who gets this “Wiz”’s closest thing to a showstopper in “Don’t Nobody Bring Me No Bad News.”

Brady, cameo-style, plays the Wizard with a Center Square personality. And Deborah Cox croons a lovely, maternal rendition of “Believe in Yourself” as Glinda.

Then, in a wildly rushed ending that gives zero closure, Lewis nicely sings “Home.”

It’s too bad that elsewhere in the musical, her Dorothy tends to let the wackier, flashier roles take over, whenever she’s not belting downstage center. This staging’s biggest flaw, actually, is forgetting that the show is more than just a bopping playlist — it’s the story of a scared girl who’s lost and discovering what matters most in her life.

But a lot has fallen to the wayside here. Not much is distinctive about this “Wiz” besides a memorable start of Act 2, during an extended dance called “Emerald City.”

Ensemble of The Wiz on Broaddway.

It’s a modern nightclub sequence that’s a lively breath of fresh air. Finally, the show has been given a contemporary context beyond 3D images ripped from our scariest nightmares.

Before and after that, though, Jaquel Knight’s choreography is underwhelming and lacks theatricality and crispness. It doesn’t fill the stage, so much as clutter it.

For example, Ozian guards flank the four friends during “Ease On Down The Road,” marching and awkwardly moving their staffs not quite in unison. Their cumbersome decoration makes the spirited trip down the road bumpier than need be.

Like so much of this hit-and-miss production.

“The Wiz” ideally should have audiences proclaiming, “There’s no place like Broadway!” at the end.

Alas, back on W. 46th St. at 10:30 p.m., I headed to the train thinking, “There’s no place like home.”

Broadway, 'Pitch Perfect' star Ben Platt to perform at Mershon Auditorium on July 2

broadway tour 2024

Ben Platt is often recognized from the first two “Pitch Perfect” movies, but the 30-year-old performer is almost an EGOT. The winner of Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony awards for his work in television, music and theater. Platt is scheduled to perform at Mershon Auditorium on July 2.

Presale tickets for the show, a stop on “The Honeymind Tour,” are to be available at 10 a.m. Tuesday, and general sales are to start at 10 a.m. April 18 at ticketmaster.com .

Uncommon season: Columbus Commons to offer carousel rides, concerts, food and more in 2024 season

Sales also should include a limited number of VIP packages offering reserved-seat tickets, custom merchandise, a meet-and-greet with Platt and more. Visit benplattmusic.com for more details, as well as to sign up for first access to tickets.

The summer show marks a return to Columbus for Platt, who performed at the Schottenstein Center in 2021.

The native Californian won the Tony for Best Actor in a Musical for his portrayal of Evan in “Dear Evan Hansen,” which also earned a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album.

Along with his castmates, he won an Emmy for Outstanding Musical Performance in a Daytime Program for his appearance on the "Today" show. He went on to reprise the role of Evan in the 2021 film adaptation with Julianne Moore and Amy Adams.

Rocking for a cause: Battle of the bands to benefit The Childhood League Center

Platt’s North-American tour comes after his concert residency at Broadway’s Palace Theatre. He also recently dropped a new single, “Cherry on Top,” which follows last month’s release of “Andrew.” Both tracks are to be on his new album, “Honeymind,” due out May 31.

Brandy Clark, who won the 2024 Grammy for Best Americana Performance, is to support Platt on this tour. Clark also co-wrote the music and lyrics for the Broadway musical “Shucked,” earning a Tony nomination for Best Original Score.
