Canada will be on the UK’s green list effective Aug. 30

LONDON — Canada will be added to the UK’s green list effective Monday, Aug. 30.

With the updated policy Canadians will be able to enter the UK without a mandatory quarantine, regardless of whether or not they are fully vaccinated.  

Canadian travellers will still need to take a pre-departure test and a COVID-19 test on or before day 2 of arrival. Quarantine is only necessary if the test is positive. Travellers can find test providers in England by visiting the test provider site .

Travellers must also fill out the passenger locator form , up to 48 hours before arriving in the UK.

VisitBritain reminds Canadian travellers that each country within the UK may have different rules in place, and encourages visitors and travel advisors to find out the requirements before arriving in Scotland , Wales or Northern Ireland .

Gauger adds: “Tourism is an extremely competitive global industry and we had already forecast a slow recovery, with overseas visitor spending in the UK this year of £6.2 billion compared to £28.4 billion in 2019, so being able to welcome more international visitors back by safely reducing barriers to travel is a crucial step on the industry’s road to rebuilding.”  

Fully vaccinated visitors from the U.S. and Europe have been able to travel to the UK quarantine-free since Aug. 2, however Canada was still relegated to the amber list.  

In 2019 some 874,000 Canadian visits to the UK marked the second highest on record, plus Canadians spent £724.36 million in the UK in 2019, another record.

According to VisitBritain’s research, 64% percent of Canadians keen to travel had not yet booked or decided where to go. It’s an opportunity to influence decision-making, destination-choice and bookings, says VisitBritain.

The UK’s upcoming events include the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, COP26, Coventry City of Culture, The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and Festival UK 2022.  

On July 19 Britain moved to its fourth and final stage of reopening. More than 50,000 businesses have signed up for the ‘We’re Good To Go’ mark, launched last year by VisitEngland in partnership with the tourism boards of Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The industry standard means businesses can demonstrate that they are adhering to the respective government and public health guidance, have carried out a COVID-19 risk assessment and checked that they have the processes in place to welcome visitors back with confidence. The ‘We’re Good to Go’ mark is recognized by the WTTC as meeting its international global standardized health and hygiene protocols and for its role in supporting the recovery of the UK tourism sector.

Canada travel restrictions: The rules for travelling from the UK

Since Friday 1 April 2022, fully vaccinated foreign travellers have no longer been required to do pre-entry tests before entering Canada. The rules were then updated for October to reflect the country's relaxed attitude to the pandemic. This is what we know about the rules for travelling to the country for UK tourists.

Are Brits allowed to visit Canada?

The rules changed again as of Saturday 1 October 2022, when the Canadian government relaxed previously enforced covid regulations.

Travellers are no longer required to submit public health information through the ArriveCAN mobile application or website, provide proof of vaccination, undergo any covid tests pre- or post-journey, or carry out covid quarantine stays.

While in the country, as of 1 October, travellers do not need to monitor or report covid symptoms upon arrival, undergo health checks for air and rail travel. The mask requirement for flights and intercity trains has also been lifted. 

As with many other countries, although the last of Canada's covid regulations have been lifted, the government still requests that you do not travel if you have symptoms of the virus. Masks are still recommended for travel, but are not compulsory.

Travellers heading to Canada are now required to present an electronic travel authorisation (eTA) to enter the country. This documentation is required to board flights to the country, unless you have British-Canadian dual nationality and plan on travelling on a Canadian passport.

Can I travel from Canada to the UK now?

Yes, since 18 March 2022, all Covid travel rules have been dropped in the UK. This means that, regardless of vaccination status, those entering the country from Canada no longer need to fill out a passenger locator form, take any tests or quarantine. There are also no countries on any UK red list for travel.

Canadian citizens traveling to the United Kingdom (UK) will be required to obtain a UK Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) in 2024.

ETA is a new digital travel permit that is mandatory for citizens of countries that can visit England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland without a visa for short trips. This includes Canadian citizens.

It will simplify travel to the UK for visiting family and friends of over 75,000 Canadians residing in the UK. The ETA also benefits nearly 900,000 Canadians who visit the UK for leisure, business, or study.

This guide offers all the information on the UK ETA for Canadian citizens, including eligibility, requirements, the application process, and travel implications.

Why is the UK ETA being introduced for Canadian citizens?

The UK ETA aims to improve the security of the UK border and allow the government more control and oversight over individuals entering the country.

The system seeks to help prevent illegal immigration, thwart organized crime syndicates, and identify potential threats to national security before they even arrive on UK soil.

The ETA is also designed to improve border control and streamline the immigration process for pre-verified, low-risk travelers.

Benefits of the UK ETA for Canadian Citizens

The ETA is an electronic document that grants pre-screened non-visa nationals permission to travel to the UK. It is not a visa, so applicants can skip the complex and lengthy acquisition process.

For Canadian citizens, the UK ETA presents benefits that include the following:

Quick and easy process

Applying for a UK ETA is entirely online and paperless. Canadian applicants can complete the application in less than 20 minutes. They also do not need to visit consulates or visa offices for an in-person interview or to submit documents.

It generally takes three days to process an ETA application. Travelers will receive the decision, whether approved or rejected, via the email address they provided.

If granted, the ETA will be linked to the passport they used to apply, so there is no need to print it out.

Affordable fee

A UK ETA application costs £10 each. The price is comparable to similar digital travel permits imposed by other countries.

For instance, the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) of the United States (US) costs US$21 (£17).

Australia’s electronic travel authorization (ETA) costs AU$20 (£10), while Canada’s electronic travel authorization (eTA) costs CA$7 (£4).

Once operational, the European Union’s upcoming European Travel Information Authorization System (ETIAS) will cost €7 (£6).

Long validity period

Most digital travel permits are valid for a year to five years or when the passport it is linked to expires.

The UK ETA will be valid for multiple short visits over two years. Travelers only need to apply for an ETA every two years or when their passport expires, whichever comes sooner, not every time they visit the UK.

How the UK ETA system will affect Canadian travelers

Currently, Canadians do not need an ETA to travel to the UK.

However, once the system opens for Canadian citizens in 2024, they must apply and obtain an approved UK ETA before traveling to the UK.

It is required regardless of the mode of transport used, whether arriving on a flight, on a ship (e.g., as part of a cruise), or over land, such as through the rail tunnel connecting Britain and France.

A UK ETA is valid for the following travel purposes:

• Short-term stay for less than six months (180 days) for tourism, short-course study, visiting friends and family, and permitted business activities and medical treatments.
• Short-term stay for up to three months (90 days) on the Creative Worker visa concession
• Transiting through the UK (i.e., changing planes), whether or not passing through UK border control

ETA Eligibility Guidelines for Canadian Citizens

To be eligible for an ETA, Canadians must meet the following conditions:

• Be a national of a country that has a visa-waiver status with the UK. Canada is included in the list of countries whose citizens need an ETA to travel to the UK.
• Have a biometric passport valid for at least six months beyond the intended departure date from the UK.
• No intent to stay, work, or study in the UK for longer than six months.
• No criminal record and past immigration breaches in the UK or elsewhere.

All travelers, including children and babies , will need an ETA before traveling to the UK. Parents and guardians can apply for an ETA on their behalf.

Individuals with a history of immigration breaches, criminal convictions, or incarcerations of more than 12 months in the UK or elsewhere may be denied an ETA. These travelers should consider getting a UK visa instead.

Canadian citizens planning to stay in the UK for more than six months or to work will still need an appropriate UK visa. The new ETA system does not affect these travelers.

UK ETA Application Requirements for Canadian Citizens

Canadian citizens eligible for a UK ETA must prepare the following application requirements:

• A valid biometric passport issued by Canada, whose citizens do not need a visa to travel to the UK for short trips.
• A recent digital passport photo
• A valid email address
• A working electronic payment method, such as credit or debit card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay

How to Apply for a UK ETA

Canadian citizens can apply for a UK ETA through the official UK government website or app.

The UK ETA application process is entirely online and paperless, so visiting consulates or visa offices is unnecessary. It only takes a few minutes to complete once all the necessary documents and information are ready.

Below is a step-by-step guide on how Canadians can apply for an ETA.

1. Upload or take a photo of the passport you will use to travel to the UK.

Ensure you include the picture and the two lines of numbers and letters at the bottom.

2. Upload a recent passport photo or take a picture using your device’s camera.

Images should be saved as a jpeg file or with the file extension .jpg. Children aged nine and under will not need to upload a passport photo.

3. Fill in all the required information.

These include personal information (i.e., name, birth date), passport details, employment details, home address, and contact information.

4. Answer questions on security and eligibility. 

Like any other UK visitor, Canadian ETA applicants must truthfully disclose criminal records, past immigration offenses, and any associations with or membership in any unlawful or illegal groups or organizations.

5. Pay for the UK ETA application online.

A UK ETA application costs £10 each. To submit the application, you must pay the fee online using a credit or debit card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay.

After completing the UK ETA online application, travelers will receive a confirmation through the email they provided.

Tips on for Applying for a UK ETA

Applying for an ETA is simple, but there is still room for errors. To avoid common mistakes, follow these guidelines for a swift and efficient UK ETA online application.

• Provide or capture clear, high-quality photos of your passport and yourself. Ensure the images comply with passport photo specifications and are in full color without filters or effects.
• Make sure you provide the correct data and are as accurate as possible. Giving false or incorrect information and even withholding information could result in delays or your application being refused.
• Check beforehand if your online payment method works and if you have enough funds to pay for the application online.
• Be sure to review and double-check the data you provided in your ETA application before you submit.

After submitting the UK ETA application, travelers can no longer amend or withdraw it. Should Canadian travelers need to correct simple mistakes in their ETA application , they can quickly do this by re-submitting the application and paying the fee again.

Processing and Receiving the ETA for Canadian Nationals

Upon receipt of a UK ETA online application, the system will cross-verify the details submitted against several security databases in the UK and worldwide to check if the applicant is qualified for an ETA.

It typically takes three days (72 hours) for applicants to receive a decision on their ETA application via the email address provided.

Many travelers receive a decision within hours of submitting their application. Still, some applications may take more than three days to receive a decision.

Canadian citizens are recommended to apply for a UK ETA before booking their travel to the UK to prevent delays or other issues.

If an ETA application is denied, the applicant can choose to complete a new ETA application form and pay the fee again. However, this is only recommended if they can establish the reason for the initial rejection and address it before doing so.

Being denied an ETA does not mean the applicant is banned from traveling to the UK. The alternative to a UK ETA is an appropriate UK visa: a Standard Visitor visa, Temporary Work visa, or Transit visa.

However, getting a visa is a more complicated and longer procedure, so adjust travel plans accordingly.

Traveling with a UK ETA

A UK ETA is digitally linked to an individual’s passport. It is valid for two years, allowing multiple short visits lasting up to six months per visit.

Canadian travelers must apply for a new ETA after two years or when their passport expires, whichever comes first, to continue being allowed to travel to the UK.

Departure to the UK

Since it is an electronic document, Canadian travelers don’t need to bring a physical copy of their ETA. 

Still, they can print it and carry the paper copy with them or be prepared to show the ETA decision email in their inbox in case of unprecedented circumstances.

For travelers with multiple passports, make sure to travel to the UK with the passport used in the application.

Before boarding a plane, ship, or train, carriers will check if travelers have the appropriate permission-to-travel document by scanning their passports. 

Carriers will only allow boarding to Canadian travelers who can present a valid UK ETA or visa.

Those still waiting on the decision on their ETA applications will also not be permitted to board.

Arriving in the UK

An ETA does not guarantee entry into the UK. Upon arrival, Canadian citizens with an approved UK ETA must still submit their identity documents to the UK Border Force or go through an electronic passport gate (eGate), if available.

Be prepared to provide proof of onward travel upon request. This typically means presenting a ticket to leave the UK within six months of arrival.

If asked, Canadian travelers must also show evidence that they have enough funds to support themselves during their entire stay in the UK and their journey home.

Travelers with a valid ETA may still be refused entry into the UK if they fail a border check or meet other entry conditions.

Once past border security, Canadian citizens with an approved ETA can freely travel between the UK’s four constituent countries: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

Canadian visitors can use all modes of transportation within the UK, such as trains, ferries, and local flights. Before boarding a ferry or an internal flight within the UK, they only need to present an ID, usually a passport or driving license.

Important Note: A UK ETA is not valid in Ireland or other European countries.

A UK ETA does not allow entry to the Republic of Ireland and other European countries. The UK is not a member of the European Union or the Schengen Common Travel Zone.

Canadians visiting Ireland or other European countries must inquire about the country’s entry requirements before booking their travel.

Planning travel to the U.K. from Canada anytime soon? Those heading to London or other tourist spots in Great Britain will want to take note of a new fee being introduced this year.

The U.K. government is implementing a new travel authorization system that will charge travellers from certain countries a fee to enter, and it's set to include those from Canada.

The U.K.'s Electronic Travel Authorization will require visa-exempt travellers to apply for digital travel authorization before entering the country.

According to reports , the change is being regarded as "the biggest shake-up" of the U.K.'s border rules in decades.

The government says that similar to other international travel authorizations, the ETA will help to strengthen the U.K.'s border by "ensuring robust security checks are conducted on every visitor pre-travel."

This will help the country prevent "dangerous individuals," from entering.

While the system will be in effect for some countries starting in 2023, it will be fully rolled out by the end of 2024, the government says .

While the full list of countries the ETA will apply to will be announced later, it's expected that Canada will be affected, as Canadians currently don't need a visa to visit the U.K.

Who needs a U.K. ETA? 

The ETA is a requirement for people who do not need a visa to travel to the U.K., or England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Therefore, you won't need the ETA if you possess a British or Irish passport, have permission to live, work or study in the U.K., or require a visa to enter.

The ETA is meant to cover a stay of six months or less and will cover tourism, visiting family or friends, transiting through the country, business and short-term studying.

It will be valid for two years, during which time travellers can make multiple visits to the U.K.

How do I apply for a U.K. ETA? 

According to the government , travellers will need to apply via the U.K. ETA App, or online at gov.uk.

You'll need to provide some biometric details (which could include an image of your face, for example) and answer a set of questions to determine your suitability.

The application process is meant to be quick and entirely digital — travellers will usually get a decision on their application within three business days, or sooner.

However, the government notes that it may take longer than three days if further checks are required.

How much is an ETA for Canadians travelling to the U.K.? 

The exact cost of the ETA has yet to be confirmed. However, the U.K. government says the cost of the ETA will be in line with "similar international schemes."

One such system is the European Travel Information and Authorization System , or ETIAS, which is set to cost 7 euros (or around $10) for each application.

The U.K.'s ETA may also be similar to the U.S. government's Electronic System for Travel Authorization , or ESTA, which costs $21.

As the system isn't expected to be rolled out in Canada in the coming months, there may still be time to work in a U.K. vacation and avoid paying it.

Canadians who have plans to visit Big Ben or the Scottish Highlands in the UK will need to pay a fee starting next year. The UK government recently announced that it would be implementing its new visa waiver system called the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) worldwide in 2024. It was created to strengthen security at the UK border by "ensuring robust security checks are conducted on every visitor pre-travel." "ETAs will enhance our border security by increasing our knowledge about those seeking to come to the UK and preventing the arrival of those who pose a threat," Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick stated in a news release . Before you plan your ultimate UK trip next year, here's what you need to know about the ETA.

Who will need an ETA?

According to the British government, anyone coming from a country that does not need a visa to enter the UK will be required to get an ETA. This includes Canadians and Americans. Though it hasn't been finalized, you can view the list of eligible countries here . You will also need it for specific travel situations. The government says you’ll need an ETA to do the following:

• Come to the UK for up to six months for tourism, visiting family and friends, business or study
• Come to the UK for up to three months on the Creative Worker visa concession
• Transit through the UK – including if you're not going through UK border control

You don't need an ETA if you have either:

• A British or Irish passport
• Permission to live, work or study in the UK
• A visa to enter the UK

How much will it cost?

Fortunately, it won't cost you an arm and a leg to apply. The government says an ETA will cost £10 (about C$16) per applicant.

How do you apply?

Canadians can apply for themselves, or on behalf of others on the UK ETA app, or online on gov.uk . Each traveller needs their own ETA, including children and babies. The government says you should get a decision within three working days, but it may take longer if they need to make further checks. You'll get an email confirmation when your application has been approved. The ETA will then be linked electronically to the passport you applied with, so make sure you use the same passport to travel. The £10 will go a long way since the ETA lasts for two years. However, if your passport expires in less than two years, you’ll need to get a new ETA. The UK isn't the only country that has implemented an entry requirement for visa-exempt foreigners. The European Union has moved the implementation of its European Travel Information Authorization System (ETIAS) several times now. Canada has had a similar system in place for years called an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) that only costs $7. The United States also has a similar setup called the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA).

Terrorism in Canada

Terrorists are likely to try and carry out attacks in Canada. 

Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreigners. You should remain aware of your surroundings, keep up to date with local media reports and follow the advice of local authorities.

• in 2023, one person stabbed and injured in Surrey, British Columbia
• in 2021, 4 people killed and one injured by a vehicle in London, Ontario
• in 2020, one person killed with a hammer in Scarborough, Ontario
• in 2020, one person killed and 2 wounded in a machete attack in Toronto, Ontario

Take precautions to protect yourself from petty crime, including:

• not leaving your bag or luggage unattended
• keeping luggage out of sight in cars
• keeping valuables and passport in a safe location
• leaving copies of important documents with family and friends in the UK
• carrying a copy of your passport for ID

Laws and cultural differences

Recreational cannabis is legally available in Canada. Laws vary depending on the province or territory you are visiting . It is illegal to take cannabis across the Canadian border without a permit or exemption authorised by Health Canada. Those who attempt to take cannabis out of Canada without the relevant permit face arrest.

If you are hiking or camping, be considerate and cautious of local wildlife. You should:

• take all rubbish with you including food items to avoid attracting animals to your site
• be careful around animals with nearby young or nests – they may be aggressive when protecting their territory
• research the region to learn about the local wildlife
• take particular care if you’re in an area where bears have been sighted
• keep a safe distance from any wildlife including marine animals and birds
• follow park regulations

Driving in winter

Thunderstorms

Summer thunderstorms are frequent in most parts of Canada, particularly between April and September. They can damage property and threaten lives.

Winter storms

Winter storms, including freezing rain, blizzards and hail, are frequent in many parts of Canada, particularly from November to April. They can make driving conditions dangerous, damage property and threaten lives. Follow local warnings or news for details.

Tornadoes can happen anywhere in Canada from May to September, but June to July is the peak season in:

• southern Ontario
• south-eastern Quebec
• southern Saskatchewan and Manitoba through to Thunder Bay
• the interior of British Columbia and western New Brunswick

Forest fires

Princess Anne will jet off on a royal tour just days before Prince Harry is set to return to the UK.

The Princess Royal will travel to Canada from May 3 to 5 on an official visit to the Commonwealth country.

Prince Harry is also expected to return to the UK only a few days after his aunt returns from her tour for an Invictus Games event.

The Invictus Games 10th Anniversary Service was listed on St. Paul’s website for May 8, and on the official running order, the prince is set to speak at the service.

Harry’s wife, Meghan, is “rethinking” the trip as she doesn’t feel safe returning to the UK after Harry lost a court case over his police protection in Britain, according to a source.

Anne last visited Canada in 2023 when she visited the country twice within one month.

Apart from the date and country, the Palace has not released any further details of the princess’s visit.

In May 2023 the princess travelled to Canada to mark the 175th anniversary of the 8th Canadian Hussars.

Only a few weeks later in June 2023, Anne returned to attend a conference in Banff, Alberta in her role as President of The Duke of Edinburgh Commonwealth Study Conferences.

Princess Anne, who is widely regarded as the hardest-working royal, will be undertaking royal engagements two days before her royal tour and will get back to work on May 8.

On her trip to Canada last year, the Princess Royal was greeted by hundreds of people lining the streets hoping for a glimpse of the royal.

The princess has already undertaken an overseas tour to Sri Lanka and Dubai this year.

During her visit to the Middle East in February, the royal attended the Seafarers Awareness and Orientation Day in Jebel Ali, a port town in Dubai.

In January, the royal went on a three-day visit to Sri Lanka with her husband , Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence, at the request of the Foreign Office.

On their trip, the couple visited the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Cemetery in Colombo and concluded the trip by making a speech about the relationship between Sri Lanka and the UK.

You may need to complete extra steps when you fill out your application .

If the printed expiry date on your Venezuelan passport has passed

If the printed expiry date has passed and you’re applying for a visitor visa, study permit, work permit or to extend your stay as a temporary resident in Canada, follow these steps:

• Add 5 years to the printed expiry date shown on your passport and enter it in the expiry date field of the application form.
• Include a letter of explanation with your application stating: “I am a Venezuelan national with a Venezuelan passport, which has been extended for 5 years”.

Warning: If your passport is still expired after adding 5 years to the printed expiry date, your passport is considered expired. You’re not eligible to submit an application with that passport.

Complete the form that declares you and your partner are in a common-law relationship. Also provide proof that you and your common-law partner have combined your affairs and set up a household together.

What is a common-law partner?

Proof can include

• joint bank accounts or credit cards
• joint ownership of a home
• joint residential leases
• joint rental receipts
• joint utilities (electricity, gas, telephone)
• joint management of household expenses
• proof of joint purchases, especially for household items
• mail addressed to either person or both people at the same address

Faster visitor visa processing for spousal applicants

If you’re being sponsored for permanent residence (PR) by your spouse or partner, you could benefit from faster processing for a visitor visa.

You may be eligible if you

• submitted an application to be sponsored for permanent residence
• received an acknowledgement of receipt (AOR) that confirms the application is in progress

Applications that need more information, for example custody documents for a child, will take longer to process.

When your sponsor receives the AOR for your permanent residence application, you can apply for a visitor visa. If you’re eligible, your visitor visa application will automatically receive faster processing. You don’t need to request it.

You must still meet all of the requirements to be eligible for a visitor visa .

• a letter from an accountant confirming the child’s or grandchild’s annual income, if they are self-employed.

To apply for a visitor visa to visit Canada on business, you need to qualify as a business visitor.

To qualify, you must show that:

• you plan to stay for less than 6 months
• you don’t plan to enter the Canadian labour market
• your main place of business and source of income and profits is outside Canada

Business visitor activities include business meetings, special events or training for a few days or weeks.

If your meeting, event or conference is registered with us, include the event code in your application. You should get this code from the organizer.

Note: If you plan to stay for more than 6 months, or if you plan to work in Canada, you may be considered a temporary worker and have to  apply for a work permit .

To apply online, you need a scanner or camera to create electronic copies of your documents, and a valid credit or debit card.

Read the instruction guide before you complete your application. As an online applicant, you can ignore steps 3 and 4 of the guide (paying the fees and submitting your application).

If you need a visitor visa to travel to Canada, you must apply online for one. Only online applications will be accepted and processed. However, you can apply on paper if:

• you can’t apply online because of a disability or
• you’re travelling with an identity or travel document that was issued to a refugee, a stateless person or a non-citizen

Read the guide carefully before you complete your application . We will not refund your application fee, so make sure you need a visitor visa before you apply.

Each individual applicant must submit a completed application form. Applicants under the age of 18 must have this form signed by a parent or a guardian.

The card you use doesn’t have to be in your name. The cardholder’s name will appear on the receipt but it does not need to match your application.

• be from a Canadian bank using INTERAC ® Online
• be registered for online banking through your bank’s website
