Catalina Island Vineyard: Rusack Vineyards

Written by dena roché, wines and spirits | california | destinations | eat & drink | north america | travel | united states.

Rusack Vineyards is a Catalina Island vineyard with roots going back to the Wrigley family. Here is the best of exploring Catalina wines.

William Wrigley Jr. made his fortune in gum. Today, his great-granddaughter Alison Wrigley Rusack is making hers in grapes. She works to keep the family’s legacy on Catalina Island firmly in place in the 21st century. Wrigley Rusack and her husband Geoff are the owners of California’s only island wine growing enterprise, Rusack Vineyards , located in the Catalina Island interior on land that used to be her family’s horse ranch. This Catalina Island vineyard, filled with history, yields the grapes to make great wines.

What's in This Article:

Wrigley Family History in Catalina

The Wrigley family’s history has been intertwined with Catalina Island since William Wrigley Jr. purchased a controlling interest in the island through the Santa Catalina Island Company in 1919. He invested millions, turning Catalina into the “it” place to party for the Hollywood elite. It also became the unlikely spring training home for Wrigley’s Chicago Cubs.

In 1975, Philip Knight Wrigley deeded 88% of Catalina to the Catalina Island Conservancy , ensuring the island will forever have a natural, pristine environment. In 2021, Wrigley Rusack was promoted to Executive Chairman of the Board of the Santa Catalina Island Company , continuing her family’s legacy on Catalina.

Beginning of Rusack Vineyards

Wrigley Rusack, who worked for Disney, and her husband Geoff, a lawyer, first dreamed together about owning a winery on their second date. Wrigley Rusack’s father was a wine collector and his passion rubbed off on her. Geoff was also a collector. They unexpectedly got the chance to start their own vineyard in 1995 when they were trying to find a bigger home for their growing family.

“We were in the Santa Ynez Valley and were tasting at the Curtis Winery. Geoff asked if anything was for sale nearby to make conversation and Kate Firestone told us of a bankrupt winery,” explained Wrigley Rusack. “We weren’t looking to be in the wine business at that point. It was something we said we’d maybe do when we retired, but we thought if we didn’t take this unexpected opportunity we’d always wonder what if.”

After several years of renovations, Rusack Vineyards was born in Santa Ynez. The Rusacks learned the ins and outs of winemaking through trial by fire.

“At the time there were only about 15 wineries in the area and the other vintners taught us as we went along,” said Wrigley Rusack.

Rusack Vineyards Finds a Home in Catalina

As they gained knowledge and experience as winemakers, the idea of a Catalina winery sat in the back of their minds, but the timing wasn’t right until 2007.

“We were inspired that Santa Cruz Island, another of California’s Channel Islands, had a winery on it in the 1800s,” said Wrigley Rusack.

The winery had been successful until its vineyards were uprooted to make way for a sheep and cattle ranch in the 1930s.

Before committing to a winery on Catalina, the Rusacks commissioned a climate study that analyzed the climate, soil, and weather patterns on the island. They found out that Catalina wasn’t just an okay place to try and grow grapes; it was a great place with a climate and soil profile similar to that of Burgundy, France.

This unexpected news was perfect for the Rusack Vineyard expansion. In the hot Santa Ynez climate, wines like Syrah flourish, and with the cool, maritime climate of Catalina, the world of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay would open up.

Rusack Vineyard Gives a Nod to the Past

In a nod to the Channel Island’s first vineyard, the Rusack family went to Santa Cruz Island and actually located a vine that was still there from the old vineyard. It turned out it was a Zinfandel vine. Despite the fact that Zinfandel normally needs a hot climate to thrive, the Rusacks wanted to plant it on Catalina because they liked the historical link.

“Surprisingly, it’s done beautifully,” said Wrigley Rusack. “It has a totally different taste profile than a typical Zin. It’s more earthy and has more minerality and a lot less fruit.”

Today Rusack Vineyards still has two locations and produces a variety of wines under the Rusack label, including those designated as Santa Catalina, Icon, and Boundless. While the Catalina property does not have a tasting room yet, the wines can be found on the wine lists of the Descanso Beach Club Restaurant and Steve’s Steakhouse on the island.

The Rusacks are continuing the family history in Catalina. All three of their sons are passionate about Catalina, and their middle son is learning the wine business to carry on Rusack Vineyards.

Stay at the Wrigley’s Mt Ada Mansion

Experience Catalina as William Wrigley Jr. did by staying at his former home, Mt Ada. Located high in the hills with a stunning view of Avalon Bay and the harbor, you’ll feel like you’re in the South of France or Italy’s Amalfi Coast.

The mansion boasts just six suites, including Wrigley’s former bedroom. Another, the Duke of Windsor suite, is named for the Duke who stayed at the mansion for several months in the 1920s. Many of the furnishings in Mt Ada are original.

Enjoying Island Flavors on a Catalina Island Tasting Tour

When in Southern California, locals and visitors can sail over to Catalina Island in one hour on a modern Catalina Express boat. Upgrade your ticket to the Commodore Lounge for special privileges that include early boarding, larger seats, a complimentary drink and snack.

Once you arrive at the island take a stroll through the Mediterranean-looking town of Avalon to savor the flavors of six restaurants. The Catalina Food Tour is a three-hour culinary experience that offers enlightening cultural, architectural and historical insight about the island, while offering tastes of a variety of flavors by the bay.

We met our tour guide Paula from Catalina Food Tours on Crescent Avenue at noon. After introducing herself and telling us a little bit about the tour, she gave us an Avalon Tasting & Cultural Walking Tour booklet. The four pages included a tour map, some fun cultural insights and exclusive guest coupons to use while on the island.

We followed her to our first tasting plate at Steve’s Steakhouse & Seafood. Walking up the stairs, we sat at a table set for eight people and sipped a glass of lemonade before servers brought out a plate with Teriyaki hibachi grilled skirt steak, one coconut-crusted shrimp and a small cup of tomato curry soup with small pasta shells.

The owner of the restaurant, Steve Bray, is a fourth generation islander and his restaurant offers some of the best views of Avalon Harbor and the Catalina Casino. It’s known on the island as a special event restaurant for fine dining.

We learned that the Catalina Casino is not a gambling venue, but home to the largest floating ballroom dance pavilion in the world. When the Big Bands performed live in the 1930s and ’40s, the dance floor held the world’s record of 6,200 dancers. It also houses the island’s movie theaer, known as the largest silent and talking movie theater in the West, with painted murals on the sides of the walls and twinkle lights on the ceiling.

Paula told us that when the cruise ships are visiting the island on Mondays and Tuesdays, the town is much more crowded. “When the ships are in, there are more people on the cruise ships than there are residents on the island,” said Paula. She has lived off and on the 1.5-square-mile island for most of her life.

Catalina is the second largest island of the Channel Islands chain and the only one that is inhabited. “The other islands are devoted to science or the military,” said Paula.

Our next dining destination, C. C. Gallagher, is known for their creative menu items. Sitting at a corner table we indulged in sipping elevated ice cream floats. Instead of root beer, they poured Bundaberg Ginger Beer over a generous scoop of salted caramel ice cream and sprinkled chocolate and caramel buttons on top. C.C. Gallagher is an elegant gift shop and wine bar, too. It once was a Security Pacific National Bank and still has the bank vault inside. On the exterior of the corner building is the famous Descanso green Catalina tiles. Paula shared the history of the island, from the Tongva native people to William Wrigley Jr. and his family.

Walking up the street Paula pointed out a residence that is made from two recycled steamboats. It’s located on Third Street. “Avalon doesn’t have a First or Second Street, just a Third Street,” she told us before we enjoyed our third tasting–at Coyote Joe’s,  a locals hot spot for tacos, guacamole and margaritas that was established in 1982. The owners make a John Daly cocktail that is too easy to drink down. It’s made with sweet tea, lemonade and vodka. We enjoyed sipping one while biting into a delicious crispy potato taco.

Strolling to our next destination, we noticed that most of the residents drive around town in a golf cart. Paula pointed to the oldest miniature golf course west of the Rockies as we walked to the Avalon Arcade. “This is the post office; every resident has a post office box inside. It’s the town’s local gathering spot,” Paula said. On the other side of the Arcade (no games, just a local hardware store, gift shop, a real estate office and a coffee cafe), we walked over to Catalina Coffee & Cookie Co. At this location we sipped Sweet & Spicy Good Earth Ice Tea and had a large piece of dark chocolate and nut candy.

catalina island wine tasting tour

Afterwards we walked to the harbor view Bluewater Avalon seafood restaurant for an IPA beer, cup of clam chowder and plate with shrimp ceviche and crunchy tortilla chips. You would think with all this food we would be too full. However the portions were small and the flavors were different and appealing at each location.

Our last restaurant, Maggie’s Blue Rose, is owned by Steve Bray’s wife Maggie. It’s a gourmet Mexican restaurant serving excellent margaritas. We were served Maggie’s Blue Rose margaritas in clear skull glasses that offered true island flavors with Casa Noble Reposado tequila, Cointreau, blue curaçao, Grand Marnier and sweet and sour. Plates arrived with a few pieces of achiote pepper skirt steak, a cole slaw made with apples, jicama and pickled onions and a savory chicken and cheese enchilada.

  • Chevron down FAQ

Do I REALLY have to purchase tickets in advance? Can I pay cash?

Yes! Tours often sell out and due to time-sensitive food & drink orders we need a head count. Remember, if you have a set date you desire, book even further in advance! You’ll be glad you did! You can purchase tickets online with Visa, MasterCard, Discover or American Express. If a tour is sold out on a date you are interested in, look to see if there is another time offered and if there isn’t, please email us . Our friendly support staff will respond as soon as possible. If you want to join the tour (eating, drinking, or not) you need a ticket. Get ready to Taste Catalina!

Simply click the SEE DATES link or call 424-226-9443 to book tickets now.

If a tour is sold out, can I be added to a waitlist?

We do not provide a waiting list. If a date and time is sold out, there is always a good chance that we will add an additional tour on that day. Please email us to let us know what date you are interested in if you do not see availability.

Do I need to purchase a ticket if I’m not eating?

Yes. All guests must purchase a ticket whether they plan to partake in the food tastings or not. Non-paying individuals will not be able to join the tour for any reason(s). The ticket fees help cover the costs of all the food samplings and also pay for your tour guide’s wages. This isn’t just a food tour. Our guides are also offering valuable commentary on historical, cultural, and restaurant information during this experience.

We want the tour guide to ourselves! AKA: Do you do private tours for us fanatical foodies?

Why yes! To set one up or learn more, please visit our Private Tours page and submit a Private Group Tour Request Form. We will respond within 24-72 hours. We love getting a group of like-minded, ready to roll and up-for-anything people together for their own tour! This is also a great option for guests who would like to practice social distancing and only be on tour with their family group.

I want to take the Avalon Tasting & Cultural Walking Tour, but have allergies.

We do our best to work with our vendors to accommodate everyone on this tour. We can provide alternatives for guests with the following allergies & aversions:

  • Gluten Free
  • Pescatarian
  • Shellfish Allergy

If you and/or anyone in your party has an allergy or aversion, please let us know ahead of time by selecting the appropriate check boxes when you make your purchase.

For those of you with food aversions (not medical food requirements) – we will, of course, work with you, however, all of our locations are serving their specialty dishes, so if you are able to check your diet at the door for a few hours that would be great!
